Iglu cruise and flights

Cool Cruiser

My husband and I are due to sail on the Glory on the 20th September 2020.  We booked a package deal which included flights, transfers and 3 nights in New Orleans before the cruise.  We have been contacted today to discuss  flights.  We would prefer to fly from Manchester rather than London Heathrow but our agent tell us there is a £300 difference each so they’re pushing us to take London Heathrow flights.  My investigations via Skyskanner show there is only around at £60 difference in the flights.  They’re also giving us return flights the day after we disembark they ship which just isn’t convenient due to time off work etc.

Are the agents playing us here?  Is it somehow more beneficial for them to get us to fly from London Heathrow?

The agency is likely dealing with negotiated bulk fares, which are not what you would necessarily find with public search tools.  Thus, any differential in pricing between routings is likely the difference of those negotiated fares - which may or not correlate to publicly available pricing.

Also, when you buy a "package", you get the whole deal as put together by the agency (or which the agency is reselling).  You don't get to buy a package and then say "well, even though we bought this, we'd rather fly through MAN than LHR.  At the price we like.  And we want to come home a different day than what you gave us".

Of course, you did research this all before committing to the purchase.

You're likely comparing apples to oranges....skyscanner may be showing you whatever the airline is selling directly, and your agent is getting info that is restricted to some kind of consolidator or bulk fares that were arranged out of London; by changing to a London departure, or adding a MAN-LHR leg, is thus adding to the cost.

The issue of local flights was discussed when making the initial booking, and)it was agreed with the agent we would discuss further once flights were available.

Also....the flights they are offering are a day later than the disembarkation date on the original booking.

I thought a factual answer would help more than an inaccurate empathetic one.  Sorry about that.

honestly, I didn't read Flyertalker's reply as unhelpful or unempathetic; I thought it was a pretty good summary of the risk of buying a package.  Now it sounds like you were given a price and flights weren't even available yet?   That's a clear indicator of getting a negotiated/consolidator fare, and if that's the case, I'd say you were somewhat lucky that even the original quoted price was still available, even with the departure date and airport that weren't your first choice.

What is the earliest time of day that the cruise line recommends for flights? What airline are they offering your flights on? Does that airline have flights that connect well on a Sunday? 

We fly to Manchester every few years to visit family. Getting connections to line up can be a challenge and judging how long to allow in LHR or ? for potential terminal changes and immigration/customs can be worrisome. 

It is odd to me that the agency is not offering a flight out of a north of England airport --or is the agency not  located near you?

Iglu is always a dependable company just a phone call away.

With the current Covid problems and constant changes in arrangements, the Iglu team have kept their cool and are always there to help, something that Cunard and P&O seem to lack. Well done team.

Don’t book with them, you have to fight to get your refund!

This is the worst experience I have ever had with trying to get my deposit refunded. I booked over the phone on March 20th 2021 for a 5 day British isle cruise, unfortunately I had to cancel an hour later, so my payment wouldn’t have even been processed yet. But they still told me £74 admin fee would be kept from my deposit. Now 110 days later I am still waiting for my refund. I have had multiple holidays cancelled due to COVID and received my money back promptly. This company just want to hold onto your deposit for as long as possible, it’s a disgrace and I will never book anything through them ever again.

Was all ok but when I booked the following day the amount had increased! 🤔🙄 If I’d been told the day before I would have booked it there and then. Amy was ok but think this detail Might have made a difference. 🤷‍♀️

Maddy was excellent and good humoured…

Maddy was excellent and good humoured throughout a very long (93 minute) process. She stayed on well after closing time to make sure we got the booking absolutely the best it could be. That involved sending at least four different summaries as members of our group decided whether to join us. A lovely lady snd we’d be happy to see her on the cruise if she makes it.

Booked cruise over the phone and so glad I did, after getting to the payment screen online my phone was playing up for the payment to go through. I called and after not holding for long at all was greeted with a very friendly lady, her kindness and attitude was over and above and made me look forward to my cruise even more so than I was. She was very knowledgeable about the ship and gave amazing reviews, went through the booking without any rush and took payment.

Would like to have spoken to someone, and not be all online!

We needed to talk to Iglu when booking a cruise! You were able to book online a P&O cruise for us from Birmingham airport, but then pass us straight on P&O and this caused difficulty in filling in the information!

Kelly was superb, very helpful and professional

Kelly was superb and very quickly picked up on our requirements for a cruise. She then gave us several options to choose from and kept looking when we could not decide. She quickly responded with emails and phone calls and quotes. Kelly was extremely helpful and professional. At all times I felt she had our best interests at the core of her doing her job well. Nothing was too much trouble. her help and patience led us us to complete on a booking we could not source ourselves easily. Thank you Kelly.

Iglu Cruise reportedly put up for sale with £100m price tag

Iglu Cruise has reportedly been put up for sale by minority shareholders Lloyds Development Capital (LDC) with a potential price tag of £100 million.

Lloyds Banking Group’s private equity arm LDC – which took a minority shareholding in Wimbledon-based Iglu.com’s cruise business in 2015 – is said to have hired investment bankers from Rothschild to oversee an auction of the cruise brand.

According to  The Sunday Times,  the move comes as demand for its holidays recover from the pandemic after the cruise industry saw an uptick in business in 2023.

Quoting “city sources”, the newspaper said the company’s owner was likely to want to sell the business for a valuation around 10 times forward earnings.

Adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) for the brand’s cruise and ski businesses was £8.9 million last year.

Iglu Cruise ‘focussed on continued growth’ amid speculation

However, a spokesperson for Iglu.com told Cruise Trade News the brand doesn’t “comment on speculation in the press” and the business is “focused on continued growth in this very busy trading period”.

“On the back of a record-breaking Black Friday, preparation is well underway for a strong start to 2024 for the leading cruise and ski travel agency. We are looking forward to continuing to deliver exceptional service to our customers, and to supporting our partners, in 2024 and beyond.”

Earlier this year, senior vice-president for global supply Simone Clark announced she was stepping down after 19 years at the agency.
