MSC Orchestra Cruise Bookings for South Africans

We're taking bookings for the MSC Orchestra for the December 2022 to March 2023 cruise season! In fantastic news for South Africans, the MSC Orchestra will be the first ship back post the Covid pandemic, arriving in Durban on the 19th November 2022, the MSC Sinfonia will arrive in Cape Town on the 16th December 2023. As her name suggests, the MSC Orchestra brings together safety, luxurious comfort and design in seamless harmony. She was the second ship in the MSC fleet in the Musica design (the others are the MSC Musica and MSC Poesia). The ship is 294 metres in length and has a beam of 32 metres. Her gross tonnage is 92,409 and she can carry 2 550 passengers at full capacity.

Entertainment

There is practically non-stop entertainment on the MSC Orchestra, "orchestrated" by the Cruise Director. You will see what's on in the daily program which is placed into your cabin - be sure to take a pen along on the cruise with you, to mark off where you want to be when. Photographs

Be sure to get family photographs taking to remind you forever of this special occasion. Professional photographers on board the ship will be only too happy to do this for you. Otherwise, of coure, it's a lot cheaper to ask fellow passengers to take the photographs for you. Sunset is the perfect time to take pictures from the deck of the Orchestra.

2023-04-23. The Orchestra's last cruise ends in 2022/23 South African season.

2023-03-30. The Orchestra arrives in Cape Town for the first time in its 2022/23 season.

2022-11-19. The MSC Orchestra arrives in Durban, for the start of its South African season.

2020-03-20 The Orchestra left Durban on the 16th March, an early departure due to the Coronavirus crisis (she was due to leave on the 18th of April 2020). On the 18th March government published new regulations banning cruise ships from international waters. The government threatened to quarantine the ship in Durban harbour, on her return from Pomene (which was cancelled as a stop), due to the Coronavirus. Passengers on the MSC Orchestra were all disembarked by lunchtime on the 20th March, leaving the ship 100 at a time to comply with regulations regarding the Coronavirus. With that MSC ended their cruise season in South Africa.

2020-03-18. Remaining cruises on the MSC Orchestra in South Africa until April 2020 are cancelled. Emails are sent to clients via their travel agents, with a voucher which does not have a Rand value; with clients needing to fill in the voucher, and send it to [email protected]

2019-11-17 The Orchestra arrives in Durban for the 2019/2020 cruise season.

2017-11-05 A 21 night repositioning cruises on the Orchestra from Genoa to Buenos Aires stopping at Marseille, Barcelona, Valencia, Cadiz, Lisbon, Las Palmas, Santa Cruz, Recife, Salvador and Rio de Janeiro.

2014-03-13 : The MSC Orchestra becomes the first MSC Cruises ship to arrive in Australia, as it visits Cairns on its way to Fremantle. The vessel sets sail from Dubai on the 21st February 2015 and on the way will stop at inter alia Mumbai and Kochi.

Inside the MSC Orchestra

The MSC Orchestra has 18 decks that host all its exciting facilities. This includes 5 restaurants, serving cuisine of Italian and even Chinese descent. Below are some pictures of the Shanghai Restaurant and the 4-Seasons Restaurant onboard the Orchestra:

This cruise ship has bars and lounges for all tastes, with each having its own theme. You can enjoy the feeling of being anywhere in the world, with the African-themed Savannah Bar, Hollywood-style Zaffiro Bar, the stylish La Cantinella Wine Bar, the Barracuda Bar, Amber Bar, Purple Bar, L'Incontro Bar and The Shaker Lounge.

Alternatively, the lower dining room is the Villa Borghese. Note that water, tea and coffee are not free at dinner time, but drinks are reasonably priced.

Guests can enjoy some rest and relaxation time at the MSC Aurea Spa, which along with a spa also hosts a meditation room and a fitness centre, which has beautiful views from the front of the ship. Entertainment comes in the form of live shows at the Covent Garden Theatre, gambling at the Palm Beach Casino, dancing all night at the disco, watching movies at the open air movie theatre or playing basketball or tennis at the Orchestra's very own courts. There are also two pools on the upper deck of the ship to choose from on those perfect sunny days.

The ship has several swimming pools and jacuzzis.

Cabins and Suites

There are a variety of cabins to choose from on the MSC Orchestra:

Interior Staterooms - These cabins are 14 square metres, have single beds that can be converted into a double bed (on request), as well as a spacious wardrobe,a bathroom with a shower, interactive TV, telephone, availability of internet connection by your own laptop (on payment), mini-bar and safe.

Ocean View Staterooms - These cabins are 17 square metres in size and have all the same features as the interior staterooms plus a window with a view to the outside.

Balcony Staterooms - These cabins have the same amenities as mentioned above, plus they have a balcony. There are two kinds of balcony staterooms, the standard one, which is 18.5 square metres, and the superior balcony stateroom, which is 22 square metres.

Balcony suites - 29.5 Square metres big, these suites are lovely and spacious, have a balcony to the outside, as well as all the amenities of the other cabins.

May 2011 - The Irish Naval Association cruised from Copenhagen and wrote this about the MSC Orchestra : "The ship was stunning and top of the range in luxury" and "Our over-all impressions: the ship was terrific, scenery was amazing, food was great, shows were great".

August 2011 - A passenger on a cruise in the Mediterranean describes his experience of the MSC Orchestra: "The ship itself was magnificent and when we (my wife and I) first saw it in Copenhagen we were impressed".

The ship arrived mid-November 2023 and will leave on the 3rd April 2024. 

The dress code on board is casual. 

• The main dining room is casual, normally long pants and a t-shirt / shirt for the man. No swimwear or shorts.
• The casino has a dress code that prohibits swimwear, tank tops, and shorts.
• No swimwear are allowed at the buffet. Add a sarong on top of your swimwear and all is good.

PORT LOUIS – Port Louis is the capital city of Mauritius, in the Indian Ocean. It’s known for its French colonial architecture and the 19th-century Champ de Mars horse-racing track. The Caudan Waterfront is a lively dining and shopping precinct. Nearby, vendors sell local produce and handicrafts at the huge Central Market. The Blue Penny Museum focuses on the island’s colonial and maritime history, along with its culture.  ― Google

PORTUGUESE ISLAND

“Set between the African coast and the Indian Ocean, Portuguese Island is a small, uninhabited island: one of the enchanting destinations of an MSC cruise to Southern Africa. It is located at the external limit of Maputo Bay, host to the capital of Mozambique, under the cover of Inhaca Island, the chosen location for some of the most luxurious resorts of the entire continent.

During your holiday, take some time between dips in the warm, crystalline ocean waters to stroll around this island. It is six kilometers long, about an hour’s walk on sand that caresses the soles of your feet (during the central hours of the day, it is best to wear open sandals because the sand becomes very hot), with only the blue of the water and the green of the low vegetation for company. The mild effort involved will be repaid in kiosks serving refreshing beverages and local food. If you like rum, try the Tipo Tinto, which is distilled from local sugar cane. There is also no lack of beach activities: in addition to all the services available for those who just want to lay in the sun undisturbed, such as beach umbrellas, deckchairs, and sunbeds, there is equipment for playing beach volleyball and beach tennis. However, a piece of advice for all: don’t stop as soon as you get off the tender t that brings you to the island, look for a more secluded bay; they are just a short, pleasant stroll away. For those who wish it, it is also possible to circumnavigate the island and admire the coast and the bay of Maputo in a traditional dhow: boats with a triangular sail of Middle-Eastern origins that have sailed the waters of the Indian Ocean for centuries. From Portuguese Island, it is possible to reach the nearby main island of Inhaca, where, in addition to fantastic beaches, there are restaurants, bars, a market, and even a Marine Museum and old lighthouse.” – MSC CRUISES SA

MSC Cruise Ships Come To South Africa For 2022/2023 Cruise Season

Msc cruises will be bringing two ships to south africa’s shores for the 2022/2023 cruise season..

• MSC Sinfonia (Cape Town) will join MSC Orchestra (Durban) in South Africa for 2022/2023 cruise season.
• MSC Cruises will be offering cruises for both unvaccinated and vaccinated guests, with vaccinated guests no longer needing to be tested.
• MSC Sinfonia will sail from homeport Cape Town from December 2022 to March 2023 whilst MSC Orchestra will sail from homeport Durban from November 2022 to April 2023.

The 2022/2023 South African cruise season will see two MSC Cruises ships of different classes, the MSC Orchestra – which is part of the Musica class and MSC Sinfonia – which is part of the Lirica class, be deployed in the country simultaneously, for the first time, providing additional cruise capacity to cater for the local demand for cruise holidays.

The 2021/2022 local cruise season saw MSC Cruises carry in excess of 40’000 guests to various destinations with new Health & Safety regulations to ensure the safety of all guests. The 2022/2023 local cruise season, will see both unvaccinated and vaccinated guests able to cruise:

• Vaccinated guests are no longer required to provide a COVID-19 test before departure.
• Un-vaccinated guests 5-years and older are still required to provide a negative COVID-19 PCR test, 48-hours prior to departure in accordance to local government regulations in South Africa.
• Children under the age of 5 are not required to provide a COVID-19 test.

MSC Orchestra, a well-known vessel to local cruisers, will return to South African waters in November 2022, with approximately 40 sailings to Mozambique and to local destinations.

Alongside MSC Orchestra is MSC Sinfonia that will operate approximately 22 sailings out of Cape Town to Namibia and other various local destinations. The itineraries will vary from two to seven-night cruises, offering guests a wider choice of options to book their cruise holiday. The ships will alternate routes, providing South African cruisers with a wider choice of options to suit their holiday needs with more cruise destinations and packages on offer.

MSC Sinfonia will be permanently positioned in Cape Town for the duration of the cruise season and will serve our guests seeking a more cultural experience with our cruises to Namibia. For guests wanting to explore more of our South African destinations we have cruises to Mossel Bay and for guests simply wanting to take time to rest and relax, our “no-destination” cruises at sea provide the perfect getaway to enjoy the Indian and Atlantic Ocean sunrises and sunsets.

MSC Cruises Expands to Year-round Operation in Greece

The cruise division of the MSC Group, on Wednesday revealed details on its 2024 cruise season in Greece , which includes more calls to Greek ports and winter itineraries for the first time. MSC Group’s cruise division is made up of MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys.

According to a company announcement, MSC Cruises will have six different ships calling to Greek shores this year making over 400 calls to nine different island and mainland destinations around the country, including a ship homeporting in Piraeus during the winter.

This is the first time MSC Cruises will homeport a ship in Greece for a whole winter season (2024-25) thus extending the cruise season in line with the country’s wider five-year tourism development plan to extend the core visitor season. The MSC Sinfonia will sail from her home port in Piraeus on seven-night itineraries, including Corfu .

This year, MSC Cruises’ ships will begin calling Greek ports from March 28, marking the start of year-round operation.

The new season also sees increased calls to certain ports including Kefalonia , Katakolon , Zakynthos and Corfu, in an aim to reduce pressure on destinations such as  Santorini and Mykonos .

Meanwhile, Explora Journeys, the luxury lifestyle ocean travel brand of the MSC Group, will call to 21 Greek ports in 2024, with many of EXPLORA I’s journeys offering convenient embarkation and disembarkation in Piraeus. Ports of call for the brand’s first luxury ship, with 461 ocean facing suites and a guest to host ratio of 1:1.25, include Katapola ( Amorgos ), Paros , Patmos and Corfu.

“This traffic will also support wider tourism and economic impact in the region thanks to the ships’ embarkation ports in Greece, which will see a large percentage of guests flying into Greek airports from all over the world, with many extending their holiday at sea with stays pre or post-cruise ashore in Greek resorts and cities,” the management of MSC Group said in an announcement.

MSC Cruises also offers over 40 different shore excursions across all Greek destinations, this way supporting local suppliers, and incorporating tours, tickets and visits to local Greek businesses.

“These excursions not only support local economies, but encourage guests to immerse themselves in Greek culture, taste Greek cuisine and learn about Greek history.”

And its newest ship (for now), Disney Wish , is unquestionably one of the best cruise ships for kids ever made. But Disney isn't the only major player in the family cruising space. 

A host of other cruise lines, including Carnival Cruises , Princess , Norwegian , MSC , and Royal Caribbean , have helped usher in a new era of family vacations on cruise ships with amenities like kids clubs, water parks, stage shows, theatrical dining experiences, reduced fares for young children, and even kids sail free deals . And because the best cruise ships for kids are also great for grownups , you have plenty of options when it comes to the best family cruises.

1. Disney Wish

The sheer volume of onboard entertainment options for families on Disney Cruise Line's newest ship, Disney Wish , takes things to a whole new level. From action-packed dinner-and-a-show experiences like Worlds of Marvel and Arendelle: A Frozen Dining Adventure to the Star Wars: Hyperspace Lounge , and Incredibles-themed inflatable obstacle course , you'll never run out of things to do.

Sailings on the Disney Wish also include a stop at Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay , which is always a highlight of any family cruise. Castaway Cay’s family beach is a great place for swimming, and you can rent bikes, kayaks, and snorkeling gear to see colorful tropical fish and perhaps even a sea turtle munching on seagrass.

2. Disney Magic

While every ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet has a claim to be among the best family cruises, the original DCL family cruise ship deserves a special mention: Disney Magic is the ship that launched Disney Cruise Line in 1998, and with DCL's constant improvements and upkeep, the ship doesn’t feel outdated at all. Making its debut in December 2024, Disney Cruise Line's sixth ship will be called Disney Treasure and it will be the ship for fans of the Disney theme parks. Venues inspired by classic attractions such as the Haunted Mansion, Jungle Cruise, and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea are among the highlights to look forward to when the ship sets sail. The sister ship of Disney Wish will also have a high-tech Worlds of Marvel dinner show and a theater-in-the-round dining experience, this time themed to Pixar’s Coco.

Disney Treasure will also feature a brand-new original Broadway-style production called "Disney The Tale of Moana" in the Walt Disney Theatre. Best of all, Disney Treasure will sail seven-night itineraries to both the Eastern Caribbean and Western Caribbean. 4. Icon of the Seas

A brand-new class of ship is heading to North America in 2024, and it starts with Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas in January. Among the many firsts for Icon of the Seas is the AquaDome, the largest glass and steel structure on any cruise ship, seven pools, six record-breaking waterslides, eight separate neighborhoods, 40 ways to drink and dine, four stages, and a three-level ultimate family townhouse. The innovative AquaDome is a peaceful oasis during the day and a vibrant hotspot at night with a 55-foot-tall water curtain and AquaTheater that debuts performances with divers, skateboarders, and robots.

Thrill-seekers will love Category 6, the largest waterpark at sea with six waterslides. There's also the Crown’s Edge, which is part skywalk, part ropes course, and 100 percent thrill ride where you can dangle 154 feet above the ocean. Those looking to take it easy should head to Chill Island, which features four pools spread over three decks with sweeping ocean views.

Fans of Royal Caribbean will enjoy the Royal Promenade with 15 restaurants, bars, and lounges; Central Park's open-air neighborhood filled with live plants and trees; and Surfside, the first neighborhood designed specifically for young families. The ship's seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean family cruises all stop at Perfect Day at CocoCay , the line’s award-winning private island. Families will find an array of activities on Perfect Day at CocoCay, such as its beaches and freshwater pool (included) and an expansive water park and zip line (available for an extra charge).

Other features that earn the Caribbean Princess a spot on my list of best family cruises include its partnership with Discovery Inc. for "Discovery at SEA" activities, which feature Animal Planet and Discovery Channel programming, the Stanley the Bear experience, and JrChef@Sea cooking classes. In summer 2024, Caribbean Princess heads to Southampton for a series of European cruises before heading back to Florida.

10. MSC Meraviglia

Unless you're a hardcore cruise family, MSC Cruises might be the largest cruise line you’ve never heard of. One of the leading cruise lines in Europe, South America, and other parts of the world, MSC is working hard to get a foothold in North America by offering great deals on family cruises. These include kids ages 18 and under sailing free on select departures , and young children ages two and under always sailing free.

Family-friendly MSC Meraviglia launched in 2017 and it features seven different kids’ clubs for children from babies to age 17. Teens have their own space with a cinema, game room, and live stage. Families can play together in the vast entertainment area that includes an MSC Formula One Racing Simulator, a full-sized bowling alley with two lanes, an interactive XD cinema, a flight simulator, and a video games arcade. Teens have three different themed areas to engage with their peers.
