Tour Operator Terminology

On this page we’ll try to clearly define the terms you need to know to run a tour business, and interact in our  Tourpreneur Facebook Group .

General Tour Industry Terms

  • Tour This is a catch-all term that implies a type of travel experience that takes place over time, generally visiting multiple sights. It could last 1 hour or 30 days, and be done as a walk, or in vehicle. It could be a solo traveler or a group of 50 people. Other words might be used to describe the same thing:  tour, experience, journey, excursion , etc. It usually implies something organized, either by the traveler themselves, or a tour operator, who designs and delivers a tour for a traveler or group of travelers.
  • Guest/Customer/Client/Passenger/Participant/Traveler Thanks to Disney,  guest  is what we generally use to refer to our customers. Why the difference? “Customer” implies a financial relationship, whereas  guest  relates more to a personal connection and a sense of welcome and hospitality. But it’s the same as customer, passenger (PAX), traveler, etc., and different companies will prefer different terminology.
  • Guide / Tour Guide / Tourist Guide “tour guide” is used more often in Anglophone countries, especially in the U.S., whereas “Tourist Guide” is used in Europe and elsewhere globally.
  • Tour Leader/Tour Director/Tour Manager/Tour Escort/Trip Leader This role goes by many different names. It refers to a guide who works over multiple days, usually traveling with a group of guests to multiple cities or regions. In addition to delivering commentary about the locations visited, a tour leader also handles the tour logistics, including working with the motor coach driver, staying on schedule, checking into hotels, meals and activities on time.
  • Interpreter A guide working often at National Parks or heritage sights; interpretation theory is a 100-year old body of theoretical work focused on strategies for helping individuals make their audience connect with and care for the site that’s being interpreted.
  • Docent The name sometimes used for a guide usually in a museum or cultural heritage sight.
  • Day Tour A type of experience that begins and ends in the same day. Usually used to distinguish an experience from a multi-day tour.
  • Multi-Day Tour Any type of experience that lasts for more than one day. Often includes hotels, meals, short activities, and a form of transportation.
  • Package Tour A kind of experience (usually multi-day) in which several different components are bundled together: it may or may not include airfare, hotels, guided experiences, meals, etc.
  • Group Tour You’ll see these terms used differently to a kind of experience in which separate individuals or smaller groups come together to share an experience. Group tours can be  public  or  private .
  • Public Tour As the name implies, this is a tour that’s open to the general public to sign up. The tour therefore consists of a variety of people who don’t already know each other. A public tour is usually offered at a set time and day.
  • Private Tour A tour that is sold specifically to an already-organized group of travelers who don’t wish to experience the tour with others. A private tour might be a couple, a small group of friends, or a large church group. Private tours might be at a set time, or organized according to group’s specific needs.
  • Custom Tour A custom tour is usually also a private tour.  Custom  refers to the operator crafting an experience customized to the specific demands of a client. A tour operator might be engaged by a client to design a unique experience, for one person or a large group.
  • Pre-Formed/Affinity Group These are commonly used terms in the multi-day tour space to refer to a group tour not made up of individual solo travelers & couples, but instead of an alread-formed large group of travelers. An “affinity group” shares a common trait—they belong to a church, a retirement community, or a family reunion traveling together, for example. A pre-formed group might also be created by a “Group Leader” who sells a tour  for  a tour operator ,  often in exchange for a free trip or a commission.
  • Escorted Tour Used most often in the multi-day tour space, an escorted tour means you’re traveling with an escort (old fashioned term), more commonly referred to today as a tour manager, tour director, tour leader, or trip leader. The TM’s job is to handle the logistics of keeping the group together, checked into hotels, arranging meals, etc. They work  for  the tour operator.
  • Guided Tour In short, an organized excursion led by an individual or individuals. “Tour Guide” is the generalized term, but a guide could be a museum “docent” or an adventure guide, tour leader, etc.
  • Self-Guided Tour This has two different meanings, one related to technology, one related to nature. When talking about mobile phone apps, a self-guided tour is one usually done in-destination using audio recordings and GPS data to guide an individual along a tour route, sharing recorded stories. In the world of adventure tours, a self-guided tour happens when an individual hires a tour operator to provide guidance in the form of itineraries, maps, possibly technology, all to facilitate an extended journey involving walking, hiking, biking, etc.
  • FAM Tour A “familiarization” tour, focused on helping one set of professionals (travel agents, for example) learn about a destination, or about vendors in an area. A group of tour guides might take a FAM tour to a new attraction that opened in town, to become familiar with it. A group of travel agents might sign up for a FAM to a destination that they’ll then sell to clients.
  • FIT Tour Very confusing term. It’s evolved over time. It once meant “foreign independent travel” but now is more often thought of as “flexible independent travel.” The goal is to distinguish this kind of independent traveler from someone who buys into a packaged group tour. FIT is more associated with a client who engages with a travel agent or operator to design something that suits their specific customized needs.
  • Activity An activity is usually different than a tour in that it is less about guided sightseeing and more about doing something, well, activity based. Examples might be watersports, biking, hiking, etc.
  • Attraction Think amusement parks, museums, and the Eiffel Tower. What do they all have in common? They require tickets, they’re single place-based experiences, and rather than do them in groups, thousands of people pour in at once, with no specific booked time requirements (unless doing so for crowd control or pandemic related reasons).
  • “Tours & Activities Industry” This is just one of many ways to talk about our industry. You’ll also hear Tours, Attractions & Activities,
  • DMO/CVB/Tourism Board A Tourism Board or Destination Marketing Organization (DMO) or Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) are all essentially the same thing. — an organization (public, private, or a mix) whose goal it is to promote a destination, be it a city, region or country. Examples include  NYC & Company  and  Visit Scotland .
  • MICE Pronounced like the animal, stands for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Events. From a tour perspective, this is where an operator might work with a CVB (see above) to organize tours for business customers hosting or attending a conference in a location. Incentive tours are reward experiences that a company offers a group of employees.
  • B2B Tour operators who work with other operators

Types of Tour Operators

  • Tour Operator A business that organizes and sells tours. They sell to a customer, and possibly work with vendors (hotels, restaurants, vehicle companies, etc.) to create an organized tour experience. In short, operators do the grunt work.
  • Travel Agent/Agency In general, an agency works with travelers, and books travel components to relieve the traveler’s burden of figuring it out on their own. An agency might book a tour operator’s tour as part of the services they provide the travel, in exchange for a commission from the operator.
  • [insert word here]  Operator Tour Operator is a general term, but that’s not the only kind of operator out there. You might also be an adventure operator, watersports operator, ATV rental operator, you name it. But in all cases, you’re not an agency booking someone else’s service, you’re providing the service yourself.
  • Day (or Multi-Day) Tour Operator Both are subsets of “tour operators” in general. It might be used in the Tourpreneur community when we’re referring to the specific challenges of a specific kind of operator, since the products and challenges of each type of tour can be very different.
  • Inbound / Receptive Operator /  DMC (destination management company) These are all versions of the same thing, with terminology that is sometimes preferred over the other words for various reasons. This kind of tour operator creates experiences in a certain location (often a specific city or a region or country), working B2B with tour operators or corporate entities needing local knowledge and connections.  Receptive operator  is an older term meaning they “receive” clients who are coming in (or inbound) from somewhere else.
  • Outbound Operator This version of tour operator (usually multi-day) designs experiences that take guests elsewhere. An outbound operator might be based somewhere (Australia, for example) but focus on creating trips that send their Australian customers outbound to other countries.

Sales, Marketing & Software Terms

  • SEO Search Engine Optimization—the art of optimizing your website and online presence to bring your content to the top of search engine results (principally Google).
  • PPC Means “Pay-per-click” and references the kind of digital advertising done by companies like Google: you create an advertisement to appear in search engine results, for example, and you pay for that ad a specific market rate each time someone clicks on your link.
  • OTA Online Travel Agency—this is a catch-all term for a wide variety of online marketplaces servicing the travel industry, selling everything from rental cars to flights to hotels to tours. An OTA in the general industry might refer to big players like Expedia or Booking.com; in the tour industry, it refers to companies like Viator (the largest tour OTA) and GetYourGuide. There is a long tail of “niche OTAs” that serve specific types of tours and activities (like watersports) or a specific region.
  • Online Marketplace / Platform This is a more general term for the kind of website platform (like Viator) that sells a wide variety of tours online. Think Guide Marketplaces like ToursByLocals or Withlocals, companies that curate large amounts of guides, but aren’t traditional OTAs like viator.
  • Restech/Booking Software You’ll hear “restech” (alternately reztech, rez-tech, etc…) as a fast way to refer to the software industry centered around creating helping tour operators accept online bookings, and keep those bookings organized. The largest companies in this space work mainly with day tour operators.
  • Tour Operator Software Different than booking software/restech, TO software offers an extended suite of features meant to help operators across their whole business, from operators to itinerary proposals to budgeting and pricing. This software may include a booking/payment component, but is a much more fully integrated and holistic (and expensive) solution.
  • SaaS Short for “Software as a Service” — this is how the tech industry refers usually subscription-based websites or software that help you do something. Examples of SaaS include booking software and CRMs.
  • Supplier In the language of selling tours to customers on a platform, tour operators are suppliers; you  supply  tours that are then  re-sold  by the platform.
  • Connectivity This is the dark art of how you, the operator (supplier) connect to sales channels.
  • Distributor/Reseller These are sales channels that sell tickets to your tours on behalf of you. They could be everything from an online marketplace like Viator and GetYourGuide, to a personal travel agent or hotel concierge..
  • Channel Manager This is software that helps you manager all your different sales channels in one place.

Who is Ludvig Aberg? Bio and pronunciation of his last name for the 2024 Masters contender

tour out meaning

Ludvig Aberg -- or, more accurately, Åberg -- is quickly making a name for himself in global golf. Owner of one of the most powerful swings in the game, Aberg has moved up into the world top 10 ahead of the 2024 Masters Tournament .

However, for Aberg, his journey to the PGA Tour is a remarkable story.

Aberg was born in Eslov, Sweden. He went to Texas Tech University for school and college golf.

Aberg has a fascinating backstory, becoming the first player in history to earn PGA Tour status right out of college through the PGA Tour University program. Aberg was a dominating player in college at Texas Tech and finished his collegiate career at the top of the PGA Tour U ranking, thus immediately earning status on the PGA Tour. He ultimately used that status to parlay his way into an opportunity to play and win on the DP World Tour, securing his Ryder Cup team spot with a win in the Omega European Masters in Switzerland. He then went on to win his first PGA Tour event at the 2023 RSM Classic .

Aberg is hitting his prime

David Aberg has won at every level, including as an amateur and after he turned pro in 2023. He joined the PGA Tour in 2023, along with the DP World Tour.

Aberg has won on the PGA Tour, taking the 2023 RSM Classic, and on the DP World Tour, winning the 2023 Omega European Masters.

Entering this week, Aberg was ranked 8th in FedEx Cup points and ranked 9th in the Official World Golf Ranking. He earned his way into this event through his status in the top 50 in the Official World Golf Ranking and as a PGA Tour winner.

In his personal life, Aberg is single.

How to pronounce his name

Of course, American golf fans will draw their eyes to his last name. Since Åberg is from Sweden, American fans are curious how to say his last name correctly.

The pronunciation can throw off even English speakers pretty easily. The A with an overring (or circle) on top of it does not carry over very well to English, particularly when it comes to typing. That has thrown off most people's pronunciation of Åberg's last name. However, the pronunciation of his last name isn't that difficult. Phonetically speaking, here's how to pronounce Ludvig Aberg: Lood-vig O-berg. The first name is actually pretty much pronounced how it sounds, but you have to know the A with an overring is pronounced with more bass, closer to an O sound.

What a win at the Masters means

With a win today, Moore would earn the benefits of being a Masters winner , including a five-year PGA Tour exemption. He would also earn a Masters invitation for life and an exemption into to majors for five years. And, according to the 2024 Masters payout , he would win $3.6 million to top it all off.

2024 Masters Tournament money: Purse, winner’s share, updated prize money payout

T he 2024 Masters Tournament prize money payout is from the $20 million purse, with 59 professional players who complete four rounds at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Ga., earning an official-money paycheck this week.

The winner's share of the Masters Tournament prize pool is at $3,600,000, with the second-place finisher taking home $2,160,000. The Masters Tournament prize money payout breakdown shows a payout of 18 percent of the purse to the winner, and how much each Masters player earns is guaranteed down to the 59th-place professional player, who gets $39,600.

The Masters Tournament field is headed by Scottie Scheffler , Max Homa , Collin Morikawa and more.

This tournament started with 89 players, and a cut was made this week after two rounds. Every professional player in the field is paid for completing the event, but how much each player is paid at the 2024 Masters Tournament from the correct 2024 Masters Tournament full-field payout is based on their finish.

The 36-hole cut was made to the top 50 players and ties, and those remaining 60 players have an opportunity to move up the leaderboard in the final round. Neal Shipley is the lone amateur to make the cut, and he will not receive prize money for his finish.

The 2024 Masters Tournament prize money payout is only true after the Masters cut is made, with the Augusta National Golf Club adding money to the purse if more than 50 professionals make the cut to ensure all players are paid. All professionals who miss the cut are paid $10,000.

At the Masters, there is no secondary cut, meaning all players making the 36-hole cut are able to complete all four rounds of the tournament.

What else is on the line

Beyond money, there are important points, perks and benefits on the line for the field -- in particular, the tournament winner.

The winner of this event will get 750 FedEx Cup points, as this is considered an official major championship event on the PGA Tour schedule.

Additionally, there are 100 Official World Golf Ranking points on the line for the winner -- regardless of their current tour.

While this event offers a significant payday, a win comes with the benefits that come with winning on the PGA Tour. Winners of these events get a five-plus season exemption on the PGA Tour, berths into the next five editions of PGA Championship, US Open, British Open and The Players. A winner also gets a lifetime exemption into the Masters.

SNYDE | Racist backlash follows rumors of ‘Mean Girls’ star Avantika playing Rapunzel

Actress Avantika Vandanapu has been at the center of a barrage of misguided and racist social media posts in recent days, reactions to unfounded rumors that she was cast as Rapunzel in a live-action Disney remake “Tangled.”

“Unpopular opinion Rapunzel is a blonde white girl,” wrote one TikTok user, adding, “sorry but a brown girl with long black hair is NOT Rapunzel.”

Another video posted to TikTok showed a white woman crying into the camera , with a caption that reads: “Me pretending the little girl in me isn’t so upset by the live action Repunzel [sic] casting.”

Some even went to the actress’ personal Instagram account , leaving comments on her posts such as, “Ur not meant for Rapunzel I’m sorry, u dont look anything like her.”

Avantika, known professionally by her first name, is a 19-year-old Indian-American actress who most recently starred in the “Mean Girls” musical remake alongside Renee Rapp and Angourie Rice.

Despite being cast in the upcoming Disney+ project “A Crown of Wishes,” there’s been no substantial evidence to show she’s connected to a Disney live-action adaptation of “Tangled.”

According to BuzzFeed News, online rumors of her selection can be traced back to a tweet that claimed, “Sources say Avantika and Milo Manheim have been screen testing as Rapunzel and Flynn Rider for the Tangled Live-Action.”

The X user later deleted the statement and explained in a follow-up post, “I tweeted it for fun but people took it seriously and decided to be racist.”

The reactions to the rumors mirror similar instances where actresses of color were cast in live-action Disney films and then met with backlash online, including Latina actress Rachel Zegler in the lead role of Snow White and Halle Bailey as Ariel in “The Little Mermaid.”

While many seemed to be upset by the idea of Avantika as Rapunzel, a large number of supporters came to her defense and called out the racist messaging.

“No way did yall come to her literal Instagram to spread your hate….” said one commenter.

“MY RAPUNZEL,” wrote another.

2024 Masters leaderboard, winner: Scottie Scheffler's patience begets second green jacket in three years

Scheffler displayed a disciplined approach that, combined with extraordinary ball striking, turned sunday into an epic coronation at augusta national golf club.

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Three straight birdies at the turn made the inevitable reality as Scottie Scheffler pulled away from a packed leaderboard at the 2024 Masters to become the 10th man in history to claim two green jackets in a three-year span. The 27-year-old Scheffler, spending his 82nd straight week as the No. 1 golfer in the world, left no doubt Sunday that what was already known is indeed true: every golf tournament he plays goes through him.

Scheffler finished 11 under -- four strokes clear of the field -- after entering the 88th playing of the Masters as an overwhelming favorite. He did nothing to dissuade his supporters over the first three rounds, either leading or staying within a single stroke after 18, 36 and 54 holes entering Sunday's finale.

Once a two-stroke lead after three holes became a four-way tie entering the turn Sunday, Scheffler flipped a switch and never looked back. He added to that three-birdie stretch from Nos. 8-10 by scoring three more on the 13th, 14th and 16th to keep Ludvig Åberg (-7) -- finishing second while playing in his first career major championship -- at arm's length.

"It's a difficult golf course to close out a win on," Scheffler explained. "You can't play overly defensive. ... You have to play to the correct spot and hit really good golf shots. I did that to the best of my abilities today and was fortunately able to hit some really key shots and make some nice birdies there on the back nine. Really, from hole 8 on, I played really, really nice golf."

Scheffler on Sunday became the 18th man to win two Masters and the first to do so over a three-year span since Bubba Watson (2012, 2014). He is also the fourth-youngest two-time Masters champion and the eighth golfer to win the first two major championships of his career at Augusta National.

With the 2024 tournament being his fifth Masters appearance, Scheffler is the second-fastest to have green jackets take up two hangers in his closet, the quickest to the achievement in 88 years (Horton Smith, third appearance, 1936).

Despite how simple Scheffler can make the game look, this Masters was anything but easy for the top name in the game. His iron play wasn't at his usually excellent level for most of the week, his tenor was tested plenty -- his pregnant wife and best friend not by his side like usual , instead at home days or weeks away from giving labor -- but when the correct shots in the correct moments were called upon, Scheffler answered.

Fighting his swing early on Sunday, Scheffler found himself in a dog fight with Åberg, Collin Morikawa and Max Homa all nipping at his heels. Scrambling saves were required to maintain his lead as he missed greens both short and long.

An uneasy feeling, Scheffler's short game took matters into its own hands. At its best when the tournament is often its tensest, his soft touch produced a stunner on the third from the bunker for his first birdie of the day.

His pursuers purred and had their moments, though. Åberg turned in 33 to touch the lead, Morikawa answered a Scheffler birdie on No. 8 with one of his own, and Homa lashed a mighty approach into 10.

The peloton was formed with 10 holes to play, and the thought of four of the best players in the world jostling through the second nine at Augusta National on Sunday raced through the minds of many. Unfortunately his peers, Scheffler raced away from the three-player pile up.

First, it was Morikawa who couldn't keep up as the two-time major champion needed two from the greenside bunker on No. 9 and ultimately carded a double bogey. Another followed on the 11th when his second found a watery grave.

Åberg had crashed just before them with the same fatal mistake. The Masters rookie battled back, it was too little too late. He ultimately became the third debutant in the last five years to finish runner-up.

Homa stood as Scheffler's last real threat as he sent a prayer into the air on Amen Corner's treacherous par-3 12th. It wasn't answered as Homa's ball traveled a yard too long, took a firm bounce and found a bush. Another double bogey ensued.

From a pack of four, only Scheffler was left standing.

While others took the bait and got greedy, Scheffler displayed discipline. While others tried to tame a brutally difficult Augusta National, Scheffler stayed patient. While others' emotions got the best of them, Scheffler remained calm.

Scheffler's superpower, his mental game, shined through when it mattered most. His ball striking gets praised and his short game is respected, but Scheffler's greatest strength has nothing to do with the club in his hand and everything to do with the mind of the person wielding it. The one now donning a second green jacket in three years.

Youngest two-time Masters champions

2024 masters leaderboard breakdown.

2. Ludvig Åberg (-7): After starting his Masters career with a 73, Åberg fired three straight under-par rounds including the only one in the 60s on Friday. A member of the penultimate pairing on Sunday, the Masters rookie felt it on the greens early. He curled in a ticklish birdie on No. 2 and another on No. 9 to head into the second nine with a share of the lead. Getting too aggressive down the hill into the 11th green, the young Swede's approach found the water and led to a double bogey -- his only dropped shots of the day. Åberg bounced back with two birdies over his next three holes to apply a smidge of pressure on Scheffler, but by then, the damage was done. The major debutant will learn from this mistake and be better for it. For now, he'll have to settle for a solo second.

T3. Max Homa, Collin Morikawa, Tommy Fleetwood (-4): Both Morikawa and Homa looked strong early. The two-time major champion did not miss a single approach shot across his first eight holes but was unable to connect on the greens. He stood square with Scheffler through this stretch of the golf course, but greed got the best of him on No. 9 when he tried to get too much out of his approach ultimately leading to the first of two double bogeys in a three-hole stretch.

Meanwhile, Homa was a surgeron around Augusta National. Picking and choosing his spots with care, the 33-year-old's birdie on the long 10th meant he had jumped into a share of the lead. He may have been too cautious when all is said is done as he erred long on the 12th, which led to his double bogey and refused to hit driver on the par-5 13th electing to play it as a three-shot hole. Still, it represents Homa's best major result and the return of major Morikawa.

"Greed got the best of me," Morikawa said. "Nine, can't miss it over there and can't leave it in the bunker. Eleven, just tried to hit too perfect of a shot. It's not like at that point I was trying to press. I knew where I stood. Yeah, it's just can't do that. In the past, I haven't done it, but kind of where the game's at. You kind of find your little stride. We put a lot of pieces of the puzzle together this week, but after watching Scottie this week, I know what to do if I really want to close this gap on what he's doing and how impressive he's playing."

T6. Cameron Smith, Bryson DeChambeau (-2): After shooting the round of the tournament (65) on Thursday, DeChambeau carded three straight over-par rounds. The former U.S. Open champion fared well in the difficult conditions on Friday, but he lost his touch on the greens over the weekend. Remaining patient for the first half of the tournament, his aggression got the better of him late on Saturday and sunk his Masters chances. He fought back nicely with his hole-out on 18 in Round 3 and a couple birdies in the middle of his first nine on Sunday, but it was all for not. DeChambeau's T6 is his first finish inside the top 20 in his Masters career.

Take it in, Scottie Scheffler!

That is his sixth birdie in his last nine holes. Scheffler tacks one on 16 and his lead is four with two holes to play. The green jacket might as well be his.

3 up 3 to go

Scottie Scheffler makes par on No. 15 to remain at 10 under and three clear of Ludvig Aberg. Three pars should secure him his second Masters title in three years.

Scheffler birdies 14

He is up three with four to go. He taps in his fifth birdie in the last seven holes and now heads to the par-5 15th. Aberg was unable to go for the green in two after a wayward drive and needs to put a wedge close.

Aberg keeps fighting

The young Swede has rattled off two straight birdies to get within two of Scottie Scheffler. The world No. 1 just made birdie on 13 to get to 9 under. It looks like it will come down to these two as Max Homa sits four adrift at 5 under with only four holes to play.

Money latest: Inflation falls to lowest level in nearly three years

The latest official data on inflation has been released - read all the reaction and analysis on what the numbers could mean for interest rates in the Money blog. Listen to the Ian King Business podcast as you scroll.

Prices in March were 3.2% higher than prices at the same time last year, putting pressure on already stretched household budgets.

This figure, the lowest since 2021, is inching closer to the Bank of England's 2% target.

Food prices rising by less than they did last year was the biggest driver of March's overall inflation rate fall. That was partly offset by fuel prices rising this year when they were falling in March 2023.

A fall in inflation doesn't mean prices are coming down, but that they're rising less quickly.

By James Sillars , business reporter

It was a messy day for shares across Europe yesterday, and things only looked marginally better as the latest session got under way.

The FTSE 100 opened fractionally lower at 7,817 after bleeding 1.8% of its value by yesterday evening's close.

Losses then came across the board - largely reflecting growing fears that the United States will not be cutting interest rates for the foreseeable future.

A hot economy there is not giving the Federal Reserve scope to cut borrowing costs across the pond, and that does not bode well for prospects of interest rate cuts on this side of the Atlantic.

That is because interest rate cuts tend to weaken a domestic currency.

A higher dollar versus the pound would raise the cost of importing goods and services priced in dollars, such as oil, meaning they would become more expensive and stoke inflation.

Just weeks ago, sterling was trading at $1.27. Today, a pound gets you just $1.24.

Among the shares doing well on the stock market today were those of ASOS - up by more than 7% - despite publishing first-half losses.

ASOS was more bullish on its prospects over the medium term despite continuing challenges from steep competition, mainly from China, and excess levels of clothing stocks.

On the face of it, the March inflation figures are good news, with the headline Consumer Prices Index measure falling from 3.4% in February to 3.2% and the core measure, which strips out volatile elements such as energy, food, alcohol and tobacco, falling from 4.5% in February to 4.2%.

However, both figures are higher than expected, with the market having looked for CPI of 3.1% in March and core inflation of 4.2%. To that extent, the figures are a disappointment.

It is, though, the third consecutive month during which CPI has fallen, and the good news is that there is almost certain to be a fourth decline when the numbers for the current month, April, are published.

That is because the cap on household energy bills imposed by the energy regulator Ofgem fell at the start of the month and that, all things being equal, should bear down on inflation further.

That caveat is important because there is still inflation in the system.

On the eve of Iran's weekend attack on Israel, the oil price had risen by 17% since the beginning of the year, with Brent crude last Friday hitting $92.18 at one point – a level not seen since 23 October last year.

That is already feeding through to the headline rate of inflation: the Office for National Statistics noted today that the largest upward contribution to March CPI coming from motor fuels – the price of which fell in March last year but which rose in March this year.

In time, this up tick in oil prices will feed into all kinds of other prices in the inflation basket, including food, drink and other manufactured goods.

This effect can also be observed in other parts of the world.

The March CPI figure in the United States came in at 3.5% - up from 3.2% in February and the third consecutive month that inflation had come in ahead of expectations. The American experience is a reminder, should one be needed, that inflation does not come down in a straight line.

The other recent lesson from the US is that inflation is proving stickier than expected – something that the Bank of England governor Andrew Bailey and his colleagues on the Monetary Policy Committee know only too well.

At the beginning of the year, the market was expecting five, maybe even six, interest rate cuts from the US Federal Reserve. Now it is expecting two at best. American consumers have money in their pockets and, judging from the unexpectedly strong retail sales figures published on Monday, they are spending it.

Accordingly, Jay Powell, the Fed's chair, has been busily talking down Wall Street’s expectations of rate cuts, telling a meeting at the IMF and World Bank's spring meeting in Washington on Tuesday that interest rate cuts this year might not be forthcoming unless the economy shows signs of slowing down.

None of this makes life easier for Mr Bailey and his colleagues.

Tuesday's jobs data for March provided a good example of the dilemma faced by the Bank: on the one hand there was evidence of a softening labour market, with the headline rate of unemployment creeping up from 3.9% to 4.2%, but on the other, regular wages rose by 6% during the month, which is significantly stronger than the MPC would want to see before cutting UK interest rates.

The MPC will also watching carefully to see that the recent strength in US inflation does not feed into higher prices of goods imported from the United States to the UK.

The financial; markets are now coming round to the view that the Bank of England may now cut interest rates before the Fed – with the European Central Bank moving before either of them.

As for the UK government, which also faces an election this year, it has to hope that inflation does keep coming down and that consumers will start to feel better about life.

We've been taking a closer look at some of the ONS inflation data...

It shows inflation for food and non-alcoholic drinks dipped to 4% for the month, from 5% in February.

This is its lowest level since November 2021.

The increased slowdown was partly driven by a fall in meat prices and lower rises for bread and cereals, the ONS said.

Furniture and household goods prices also contributed to the fall, with prices in the sector falling by 0.9% in March compared with the same month last year.

Elsewhere in retail, clothing and footwear inflation also slowed to 4% for the month, from 5% in February, after women's clothing stores increased prices by less than normal for this time of year.

The largest upwards pressure came from motor fuels, after the average price of petrol rose by 2.6p per litre between February and March 2024 to stand at 144.8 pence per litre, according to the ONS.

After the lower-than-expected fall in inflation, Coventry Building Society has announced it is increasing all its fixed rate deals.

Although it hasn't said how much the offers will rise by, it has said it will affect new and existing residential and buy-to-let customers.

The higher rates will be introduced at 8am on Friday, it said.

The announcement has been met with disappointment by brokers, who say it is "another major ripple of increases".

"This is disappointing news. Swap rate increases continue to hammer mortgage borrowers, and lenders have no choice but to pass on those higher costs," Justin Moy, the managing director at EHF Mortgages, said.

"The 48-hour notice Coventry Building Society provides is always appreciated by brokers and borrowers, but this is just the start of another major ripple of increases that will only disappoint those coming off cheaper deals and looking to buy," he told Newspage.

Lewis Shaw, owner and mortgage expert at Shaw Financial Services, warned: "There may be more mortgage misery on the cards after the latest CPI print shows the economy is still running hotter than expected."

Michelle Lawson, director at Lawson Financial, said: "No surprises here following this morning's inflation decrease as it wasn't as low as markets expected.

"More than anything we need stability but the mixed messages being sent out to borrowers remain. This appears to be the new norm for now."

Andrew Bailey has signalled the UK is still on course for an interest rate cut as official figures show a further easing in the pace of price growth in the economy.

Our business reporter James Sillars   looks closely at the governor's comments here :

While we have seen inflation fall slightly, the UK's figure still remains one of the highest in the G7.

Our headline rate of 3.2% is nearly 1% more than Germany, which as recorded a 2.3% rate.

The US is still sitting above the UK, with an expected rise from 3.2% in February to 3.5% in March.

Rishi Sunak has celebrated the new inflation data, despite it falling by less than expected.

The prime minister says inflation is now at the lowest it's been for more than two and a half years...

It's important to say that although the figure is moving in the right direction, it is still a way off the government's 2% target.

Our  business presenter Ian King has given his first reaction to the newly released inflation data.

He says "on the face of it" the latest figure is "good news", but the bad news is the market was probably looking for a "slightly bigger fall".

"The forecast had been for the headline rate of inflation had been down to 3.1%, so the number has come in ahead of expectations but nonetheless it does mark a continue decline in inflation," he says.

The important figure, however, will be released next month.

"The number we are looking out for - to be perfectly honest with you - is what happens for the month of April because at the beginning of the month the energy price cap came down and that is expected to feed through," he says.

"On the whole, it's pretty good news, but perhaps not as good as we had expected.

"It just reiterates the fact that inflation does not always come down in the way that people expect it to."

Inflation has eased to 3.2% down from 3.4%, official figures from the Office for National Statistics show, the lowest level since 2021.

Economists had predicted the figure, which covers the month of March, would fall to 3.1%.

While the news will be welcomed by many, it is important to remember that this doesn't mean prices are coming down - they are just rising slower.

All eyes will now turn to decision-makers at the Bank of England as they prepare to consider cutting interests rates next month.

Grant Fitzner, chief economist at the ONS, said: "Inflation eased slightly in March to its lowest annual rate for two and a half years.

"Once again, food prices were the main reason for the fall, with prices rising by less than we saw a year ago.

"Similarly to last month, we saw a partial offset from rising fuel prices."

Some economists have said a cool-down in inflation could influence the Bank to start cutting interest rates from 5.25% in June.

Oxford Economics' Edward Allenby said inflation is expected to hit the Bank's target rate of 2% later this year.

But, he warned, the benefit of falling energy prices could prove temporary and cause inflation to tip higher again.

"Further declines in wholesale gas prices mean the energy component should continue to drag heavily on headline inflation throughout 2024," he said.

"Meanwhile, the food and core categories will benefit from strong base effects and the indirect effects of lower energy costs.

"Therefore, our latest forecast shows inflation dropping well below 2% in the second half of 2024."
