The Best Online Flower Delivery Service

A bouquet of pink, orange, and yellow flowers resting in water in a clear jar.

By Hannah Morrill and Mari Uyehara

Don’t underestimate the ability of flowers to turn someone’s day around.

Whether you’re sending a bouquet to mark a holiday, celebrate a milestone, or make nice after an argument, we recommend The Bouqs Company as the best flower delivery service.

We tested more than a dozen such services, and The Bouqs Company’s stylish arrangements were the most beautiful, the freshest, the best packaged, and the easiest to order.

How we picked and tested

We tested services that offer a nice variety of arrangement sizes and styles, and we docked points for wilting or damaged blooms and too much filler.

We prioritized services with clean, modern websites that were easy to navigate.

We looked for services that delivered on most days of the week and could fulfill same- or next-day shipments.

We preferred flowers that arrived well packaged, whether they were in a vase or a nice box.

The research

Our pick: the bouqs company, budget pick: costco, also great: teleflora, why you should trust us, how to keep flowers fresh, the competition, frequently asked questions.

A bouquet of pink, orange, and yellow flowers resting in water in a clear jar.

The Bouqs Company

The best online flower delivery service.

Of all the services we tried, The Bouqs Company delivered the prettiest and longest-lasting arrangements. It isn’t the cheapest we found, but the reliable and intuitive website allows the most customization of price, delivery speed, and aesthetics.

Buying Options

Every aspect of The Bouqs Company experience was a pleasure, but what cinched our recommendation was the fresh, eye-popping array of lush blooms, which lasted longer than any other bouquet we received. Its arrangements are big and colorful, and they’re loaded with lovely, unique blooms and botanical stems, not common grocery-store stems and artless filler as in many other bouquets we tried.

We ordered the Deluxe size of the Sugar Rush , a midsize arrangement that the website indicated was the most popular, delivered to multiple cities. The resulting 24-stem selection arrived in a single box, snugly split into two generous bouquets. Each individual bundle was so breathtakingly impressive, though, that we actually thought a mistake had been made in shipping and that we’d gotten two bouquets instead of one.

The arrangements are flawless. Usually, a few bruised buds or wilted stems is an unfortunate, if inevitable, part of receiving a flower delivery from a national chain, but our arrangements from The Bouqs Company were flawless and startlingly consistent. When the bouquet arrived at our Long Island City, New York, photo studio, our photo team was unanimous in guessing—without knowing where it had come from—that it was our new top pick.

The flowers lasted the longest. Rather than relying on wispy or nondescript filler like baby’s breath or leatherleaf fern, The Bouqs Company arrangement was finished with long-lasting, textural stems such as green hypericum berries and yellow craspedia baubles. After a full seven days of enjoying our bouquet, we stopped tracking its longevity, removing a passed stem here and there to keep things fresh for even longer.

They’re easy to order. The Bouqs Company’s website is more modern, accurate, and customizable than that of any other service we tested. It offers helpful and intuitive filtering at every step of the process, allowing shoppers to view options by price, flower, occasion, or color combinations at multiple stages. Most of the arrangements from The Bouqs Company are available in three sizes; the smallest and most affordable selections start around $55. It also offers a drop-down menu for delivery speed—no rush, next day, or same day—a significant point of difference from any of our other top contenders.

The service is exceptionally consistent. The bouquet we received looked almost exactly like the pictures on the website, if not even more vibrant and opulent in person. And our West Coast recipient’s arrangement looked nearly identical to the two deliveries we ordered to the East Coast.

The flowers are more special than supermarket varieties. We found that many other sites, even good ones, opted for arrangements centered on widely available staples such as daylilies, sunflowers, and alstroemeria. There’s nothing wrong with any of those flowers, but more of the offerings from The Bouqs Company—with the exception of same-day options—felt special and unique. And even when the service uses ubiquitous flowers, it selects them in rare colors or groups them in unexpected pairings, creating a considered and expensive-feeling appeal.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • The Bouqs Company’s same-day options are fulfilled by local florists, so the composition and quality of those bouquets are by nature inconsistent. The next-day options feature standard arrangements and guaranteed composition.
  • Shipping is tacked on at checkout, so arrangements end up costing more than their sticker price. The quality is exceptional, though.
  • FedEx is the exclusive shipping partner for The Bouqs Company, so any delays that FedEx experiences—be it from weather, holidays, or unforeseen events—affect delivery times. During the week of Thanksgiving, our tester received a lovely arrangement, but one day late and with no notification of such from The Bouqs Company.

The Sunset Bliss floral arrangement from Costco's flower delivery service.

Budget pick

travel flower company

More affordable, not quite as attractive

Costco’s flower arrangements are not quite as stylish as those from other companies we tested, but the blooms were fresh and lasted about a week. The pricing ranks among the most affordable we found, and ordering is straightforward.

The floral arrangements from Costco aren’t as modern or stylish as those of The Bouqs Company, but they’re fresh and pretty, and since delivery is free, they’re about 30% cheaper than most. This service came recommended to us by several Wirecutter staffers who have sent Costco arrangements to their own loved ones. Costco ships its flowers via different carriers, depending on location, and it sometimes offers next-day delivery on certain bouquets.

We ordered the Get Well Wishes and Sunset Bliss floral arrangements, each of which cost about $50 and $55 respectively and included vases, for delivery to different cities.

The bouquets are simple and well done. The arrangements we received were pretty in a traditional way, and the quality of the blooms we received was up to standard, without browning or damaged flowers. Opening the cardboard box revealed the glass vase and bouquet secured in plastic wrap and zip ties, plus instructions on trimming the stems, adding plant food, and watering—perhaps not the festive experience of unwrapping a present, à la our top pick , but still satisfying.

The service is straightforward. The page that lists the available arrangements is about as stylish as the rest of Costco’s website (which is to say, not at all), but it’s easy enough to navigate: From the main Floral page you can click categories such as Roses, Bouquets, Vase Arrangements, and Weddings & Event Flowers. From there you can filter for price, color, flower type, and delivery preference.

They’re affordably priced. Generally, Costco’s pricing for flower arrangements is roughly 30% lower than that of most other services we considered, and in contrast to many competitors, it usually includes shipping. Though you don’t need a membership to order flowers from Costco, nonmembers pay a 5% surcharge, which we consider nominal.

  • Costco doesn’t deliver Saturday through Monday, so it isn’t a great choice for last-minute or weekend flower needs.
  • All the bouquets we received were pleasing, but they didn’t always match the photo on the website.
  • Some arrangements have cheesy details such as garish colored vases or vessels that are laughably out of scale. The flowers themselves, though, are always pretty.

The Citrus Kissed Bouquet arrangement from Teleflora, shown in a glass vase.

For flowers in a hurry

These bouquets are classically pretty, and the site is easy enough to navigate. Unlike our other picks, Teleflora pulls from a network of local florists, so it can deliver excellent flowers same-day.

Teleflora uses local florists to fulfill flower orders. But unlike BloomNation (a service we tested that works exclusively with local shops), it does not allow you to select the supplying florist when ordering, and the photos of the arrangements are supplied by Teleflora, not the individual florist. Still, thanks to that model, Teleflora is able to deliver a large selection of flowers the same day you order them, by hand—something that not many companies can accomplish.

In our first round of testing, the Blush Rush bouquet we ordered for about $50 was beautiful, and all of the flowers and filler smelled and looked great for a week. In 2022, we tried the Citrus Kissed arrangement for about $65 and found the experience similar, if not even more impressive.

It uses a network of local florists. In 2022, the Citrus Kissed bouquet that our Portland, Maine–based staffer received came via the fanciest florist in town and looked downright expensive, swapping the baby’s breath pictured online for drapey fronds and adding in pert tulips and chrysanthemums. It was a vote of confidence in favor of the network of trusted, upscale vendors that Teleflora uses in less-familiar cities.

The website is easy to use. Teleflora’s site isn’t as streamlined or sophisticated as The Bouqs Company’s, but we still found it easy to navigate, as it allows you to search by occasion, color, or flower type. Many of the arrangements are very pretty, though their names may make you laugh while ordering; some favorites of ours include the Hey Gorgeous bouquet of 24 lavender roses and the My Little Chickadee arrangement, which comes in a yellow, chick-themed vase.

The service delivers by hand same-day. As online services go, the ability to sign on in the morning you remember you need to send flowers and have them arrive at your recipient’s address that afternoon is pretty impressive. Using local vendors also means that the flowers have less distance to travel and aren’t getting jostled, bruised, jammed in boxes, or left on the stoop for days.

  • The up-front pricing is somewhat misleading. A $65 bouquet we ordered, for example, ended up costing about $86 after taxes, shipping, and service fees. We were still delighted with the value overall.
  • Hand-delivery is inconvenient for some recipients, such as people who work away from home or live in buildings without door attendants. Ideally, you should ship to an address where your giftee can accept the bouquet easily.
  • Bouquets assembled by local florists range in aesthetics and quality. Our testers across the country were universally pleased with their arrangements, but we can’t vouch for the quality of the results in every city.
  • One bouquet arrived a day late with no notification from Teleflora; customer service was prompt to issue a full refund.

A few members of Wirecutter’s style team pitched in on the arduous task of receiving and reviewing flower arrangements for this guide. We’re a diverse and picky bunch, with editors on both coasts, as well as more than three decades of collective magazine and digital-media experience. Our editors and writers have had stints at Martha Stewart and Architectural Digest, among other publications, and one of us wrote a James Beard Award –winning dining column. Professionally, we’ve seen a lot of pretty flowers, and in our roles, we’ve developed a finely honed sensibility regarding beauty and value.

After combing the internet for flower delivery services, reading dozens of reviews, and polling Wirecutter staffers on the companies they use, we identified 14 of the most popular online services. We then ordered bouquets for delivery to our Long Island City, New York, office from eight vendors, assessing delivery times, ease of using the website, packaging, style, and the freshness, longevity, and beauty of the arrangements.

We noted how fresh the flowers were on arrival, and we watched how they aged over time in bright, indirect light and with the use of any included plant food. In addition, we compared the arrangements against their online photos. After determining our favorites, we then tested them further by ordering bouquets for staffers in three different cities across the country, and we asked those recipients to assess their bouquets using the same criteria. After our original 2020 testing, we reordered our top picks, in addition to retesting other services, two years later.

One caveat: We found that the quality of the individual arrangements tended to vary based on location and season. Although we tested our picks in multiple cities, the process of cutting, arranging, and transporting affects every bouquet differently. Your experience may differ from ours.

A beautiful bouquet of flowers that starts to wither and wilt after only a few days of enjoyment is one of the most disappointing things. For tips on how to save yours from such a tragic fate, we consulted Nicole Cavender, director of The Huntington Botanical Gardens in Los Angeles.

Trim the stems: When you first receive the bouquet, trim all the stems at least 0.5 inch and repeat the trim every two or three days. Doing so “exposes fresh tissue that takes up the water much more efficiently,” said Cavender. Cutting the stems at a diagonal angle creates even more surface area for absorption.

Change the water: To avoid bacterial growth, Cavender said, you should change the bouquet’s water every two or three days—you can do this when you pull the flowers out for their trim—using lukewarm water. (Not only does the growth clog stems and prevent them from adequately absorbing water, but it can also make the whole bouquet smell bad.)

Remember that location is everything: Cut flowers last longer at cool temperatures, so keep them away from direct sunlight and heat. Cavender also warned that you should keep flowers away from ripening fruit, such as apples, as they “can potentially release ethylene gas, which can decrease the longevity of the flowers.”

Feed them: Many bouquets come with flower-food packets, which assist in their longevity and blooming process; most of these packets include a carbohydrate and a bactericide. If your bouquet doesn’t have a packet, you can make your own with this recipe from Cavender: Mix 1 teaspoon sugar, 1 teaspoon bleach, and 2 teaspoons lemon or lime juice into a quart of water. Add it to your vase, and voilà—freshly fed flowers.

For several years UrbanStems was our top pick, delivering reliable and consistent blooms for a fair price. But when we retested the service, we had a different experience, receiving a rose bouquet with brownish edges, flopping petals, and uninspired filler. Plus, the company recently added a shipping fee of $15 to $20, and its quality no longer justifies the total cost.

A beautiful bouquet of pink, blue, and orange flowers in a cylindrical vase filled with water.

Benchmark Bouquets , with fresh blooms and beautiful arrangements, was our previous budget pick. But we can no longer buy from it reliably, as the service has suffered from both shipping and stock issues.

BloomNation is the only company that allows you to pick which local florist you’d like to use and shows you photos supplied by the actual florist creating the arrangement. But the arrangement we received started to wilt and wither at the edges after about four days, and the pricing was not as clear up front in comparison with other services.

An arrangement of flowers from BloomNation.

The Light of My Life bouquet that we received from FTD (which, like Teleflora, partners with local florists to source flowers) was beautiful, but some of the lilies were slightly damaged. The leatherleaf fern filler felt pedestrian.

Everything about the bouquet we tried from 1-800-Flowers.com felt dated and boring. The website was a turnoff. And though our arrangement was pretty enough, it barely resembled the listing online and wasn’t as interesting as those from any of our picks.

For just under $100 (including $25 shipping), Farmgirl Flowers’s Fun Size Burlap Wrapped Bouquet was disappointing. Not only was that price nearly double what we paid for some other flower arrangements we tested and preferred, but many of the blooms also arrived looking tired and brown, and a Friday delivery barely survived the weekend.

What is the longest-lasting flower?

You can take a few steps to extend the life of your bouquet (see our tips ), but some flower types just naturally last longer than others. According to Amy Merrick , a florist and author of On Flowers: Lessons from an Accidental Florist , carnations are a particularly abiding bloom that “can last a month in a vase if the water is kept clean and the stems are trimmed often.”

The botanical experts at The Huntington Botanical Gardens in Los Angeles recommend chrysanthemums, lilies, ranunculus, and zinnias as options that stay in relatively good condition for two to three weeks. After that, you can fashion them into potpourri or a dried display .

Which flowers are safe for pets?

Cats and dogs have a tendency to eat things they’re not supposed to, including flower arrangements. “Many flowers are toxic to both pets and humans, but it is generally quite rare for them to be deadly,” said Merrick. “Mostly they will make an animal sick.” She mentioned foxgloves and lilies as common culprits, and the ASPCA has a longer list of flowers and plants you may want to avoid in the home. Some pets can have a few nibbles without any adverse reaction, but the ASPCA advises that if your pet is experiencing lethargy, weakness, vomiting, diarrhea, drooling, or nausea, you should call your vet immediately.

Though these occurrences are rare, if you are concerned that Fluffy will get to your bouquet even on the highest shelf, you can try many beautiful varieties that are considered nontoxic to pets, including orchids. (See the ASPCA’s full list .) If you want to eliminate the guesswork, UrbanStems has an entire section of pet-friendly flowers and plants . So does The Sill , one of our favorite sites for buying plants.

Remember that any plant material—even if it’s nontoxic—might still make an animal sick, so do your best to minimize their munching.

Which flowers are best for people with allergies?

If you know that your gift recipient has springtime allergies, seek out flowers that are low pollen spreaders. Orchids, azaleas, begonias, cacti, succulents, camellias, hibiscus, hydrangeas, irises, and roses are the best options, according to the botanical staff at The Huntington.

It’s best to avoid high-pollen varieties such as chrysanthemums, daisies, sunflowers, dahlias, and lilies. And steer clear of ornamental grasses and tree branches such as dogwood and oak, which can also be problematic for those with allergies; the pollen they produce is fine, so it’s easily airborne and respirable when agitated by wind (or an ambitious air-conditioning unit).

ReVased

Flowers shipped directly from eco-friendly

Carbon neutral deliveries

Donates and upcycles flowers each month

Affordable bouquets and low delivery fees

Does not ship to Alaska or Hawaii

Cannot guarantee specific delivery dates

Express shipping options are limited and often sold out

Did you ever wonder what happens to all of those stunning floral arrangements you see at weddings and parties? Sadly, many of them are tossed immediately after the event ends. Two sisters decided to change that by starting a company that upcycles flowers from events. When Covid hit, events were canceled and ReVased looked for new ways to reduce waste in the flower industry by donating floral arrangements to non-profit organizations and repurposing florals for textiles. The company is committed to sustainable sourcing, farm-direct shipping, and offsetting emissions to make its shipping carbon-neutral.

When you select a flower arrangement from ReVased, you can choose from three different sizes: classic, lux, and premier. And with many of the premier bouquets (which contain up to 40 stems) costing under $100, we found ReVased to be a rather affordable flower delivery service.

Grace Rose Farm  »

Grace Rose Farm

Offers garden roses in over a dozen colors

Easy to shop by color, event, or favorites

Roses are shipped directly from the farm

Same-day shipping not available

High shipping fees

When it comes to fresh flowers that are as fragrant as they are beautiful, there’s nothing quite like roses. Grace Rose Farm started out as a small, family farm. It’s grown quite a bit and now sources roses from its California farms as well as Colombia, but still pays close attention to detail. Roses are hand-picked and shipped directly from the farm. They’ll arrive as semi-bloomed buds and may take up to four days to fully open, which means you’ll get to enjoy them even longer. Just how long? Several reviewers say their roses lasted three weeks.

There are so many gorgeous roses that choosing a bouquet can feel like a daunting task. Thankfully, there are plenty of ways to narrow down your selection. You can shop for the most fragrant or most popular roses, or shop by color. Still can’t decide? Try the bouquet of the week or bouquet of the month. And if that doesn’t help, leave it up to the professionals and order a grower’s choice bouquet. Rest assured that whatever bouquet shows up at your door will be absolutely gorgeous.

Venus et Fleur  »

Venus et Fleur

Preserved flowers last at least one year

Offers roses and mixed flowers

Custom arrangements available

Hat box or vase included

Non-toxic preservation process

Very expensive

Flowers are fragile and can be easily damaged

From the stunning, full arrangements to the sophisticated hat boxes and elegant porcelain or stone vases, everything about Venus et Fleur whispers luxury. But these aren’t just any flowers. Venus et Fleur’s flowers are fresh flowers that have been hand-picked while in peak bloom, dehydrated, preserved, and dyed before being meticulously arranged in a box or vase. That means your recipient will never have to water them or worry about whether or not they’re getting enough sunlight. In fact, placing these flowers in direct sunlight can damage the structure and color.

There are countless stunning arrangements to choose from. Opt for a single rose or a grandiose display of over 250 preserved roses. And if you really want to make a statement, you can design your own arrangement. If your recipient prefers something other than roses, beautiful arrangements feature hydrangeas, calla lilies, orchids, dahlias, dianthus, and craspedias that your recipient will be thrilled to display. And while these arrangements can set you back hundreds of dollars, they’ll last a year or longer. If you ask us, that makes them a worthwhile purchase.

And speaking of flowers that last, Smith frequently orders from The Bouqs, noting, “Their arrangements are always stunning and last a remarkably long time.”

Flowers arrive neatly packaged in a recyclable Bouqs box and don’t come in a vase unless otherwise noted. However, you may add a vase or mason jar to your order for an additional fee. Your flowers may also arrive in bud form. In that case, the bouquet may not look exactly like the photo online, but don’t worry. They’ll open up within two or three days and are sure to delight your recipient.

Corporate and realtor gifting programs

Tiered discounting program and flat-rate shipping

Sleek, modern designs

Same-day delivery is only available in select cities

Does not ship internationally

When it comes to the best flower delivery services, UrbanStems checks all the boxes. The company offers on-trend designs using a variety of unique blooms that are responsibly sourced. Whether you’re looking to send clients a bold and bright showstopper or a subtle and sophisticated bouquet in muted hues, there are dozens of arrangements to suit every style and occasion.

UrbanStems has a corporate gifting program that offers a tiered discount program, discounted flat-rate shipping, and a dedicated care specialist to make sure everything goes smoothly. It also offers perks through its rewards program, such as free upgrades and add-ons.

UrbanStems is another flower delivery service that Smith relies on for her projects. She lists UrbanStems as one of her go-to flower delivery services due to its aesthetically pleasing designs, reliable delivery, and consistently excellent customer experiences. “The sleek, modern design of their bouquets really resonates with my aesthetic,” she says. “They offer a great selection of unique blooms and reliable same-day delivery in many cities.”

The Bottom Line

Sending a bouquet of fresh flowers is a sure way to brighten someone’s day. When deciding which flower delivery service to choose, consider your overall aesthetic, budget, and delivery options. The best flower delivery service will have flower arrangements that “wow” you and plenty of options within your budget. Bonus points if delivery is free or, at the very least, reasonably priced. You can’t go wrong with Farmgirl Flowers. This expert-recommended company offers unique, farm-fresh arrangements in beautiful color palettes. It even has several arrangements that ship for free.

Things To Consider When Buying Flower Delivery Services

Quality and freshness guarantee for flowers

Flowers are perishable by nature, but that doesn’t mean you should accept tired, wilted, or brown flowers. “Reading about post-purchase policies is important,” says Smith. “Some places offer guarantees if the flowers wilt sooner than expected.”

Indeed, we did come across a handful of flower delivery services that offer a freshness guarantee or 100% satisfaction guarantee. If you are unhappy for any reason, simply contact customer service within the specified timeframe and the company may provide a refund or replacement.

Other companies do not offer guarantees, but if your flowers arrive damaged or in poor condition, they urge you to contact customer service. Be sure to contact customer service within the company’s specified timeframe, and be prepared to send photos as claims are often handled on a case-by-case basis.

Variety of floral arrangements and customization options

According to Smith, design elements like fresh flowers play an important role in elevating your space. “They add a special touch of life and vibrancy,” she says. So finding a flower delivery service offering a variety of arrangements that match your aesthetic is key.

Some flower delivery services specialize in modern and on-trend arrangements while others might focus on a more natural, garden-gathered look. And still, there are other flower delivery services that offer your average, run-of-the-mill bouquets that all start to look the same after a while.

We found that most flower delivery services offer little in the way of customization options. Some allow you to select the size of your bouquet, add a vase, or include a small gift such as chocolates or a candle, but the customization ends there for most. None of the delivery services we researched allow you to incorporate or leave out certain types of flowers. If you want a completely customized bouquet, your best bet is to visit your local florist who will work one-on-one with you.

Discounts, deals, and membership benefits

A beautiful flower arrangement isn’t cheap. To cut costs, many flower delivery services offer some type of membership or rewards program. These programs are free to join and allow you to accumulate points that you can redeem for things like discounts, free upgrades, add-ons, and free delivery. That being said, these programs offer the most benefits to frequent shoppers.

Other flower delivery services have special pages dedicated to flowers on sale, flowers that ship for free, or coupon pages that you can take advantage of.

Delivery options, including same-day and next-day service

“When it comes to delivery, reliability is king,” says Smith. “Opt for a service with a fast, estimated time of arrival, ideally before your event.”

If you’re the kind of person who likes to plan ahead, then you’ll be pleased to know that most flower delivery services allow you to select your preferred delivery date at or just before checkout.

On the other hand, if you’re someone who tends to wait until the last minute, you’re also in luck. Many flower delivery services offer same-day and next-day delivery options. However, be sure to read the details carefully. Some flower delivery services offer same-day or next-day delivery service, though it may be limited to certain cities and not available to all customers.

Pay attention to any additional surcharges that might be added for holiday or Saturday deliveries. Meanwhile, some services charge a fee for expedited shipping while others provide next-day delivery at no additional charge.

Geographic coverage and international delivery capabilities

Unlike your local florist, almost all of the flower delivery services on our list deliver nationwide. However, some companies do not deliver to Alaska or Hawaii.

If you want to send flowers to friends and families overseas, you’ll have to choose a flower delivery service that delivers outside of the U.S. Several of the companies on our list deliver internationally. Companies that partner with local florists overseas can even provide next-day shipping.

How We Chose the Best Flower Delivery Services

At U.S. News 360 Reviews, we know that what you see isn’t always what you get when ordering products and services online. When selecting the best flower delivery service, we relied on our own experiences and looked at myriad customer reviews to determine which companies deliver high-quality flowers that last. We spoke with Keely Smith, Lead Interior Designer for J.D. Elite Interiors , who incorporates fresh flowers into almost all her projects and has over a decade of experience with various flower delivery services. She shared her insight on the quality, sustainability, and reliability of various services. With all of this in mind, we narrowed down our search to the best flower delivery services.

WHY SHOULD YOU TRUST US?

Marisa Hillman, the author of this piece, has been researching and writing stories in the commerce space since 2020. For U.S. News 360 Reviews, she’s covered a range of buyer’s guides including the best places to buy glasses , rugs , and curtains . As a longtime homeowner and mother of four, Hillman understands the importance of spending your money on quality items that make life easier and a little bit brighter.

Smith recommends looking for a flower delivery service that sources flowers directly from sustainable farms. Having flowers cut and shipped straight from the farm cuts out excess handling of the blooms which can cause them to wilt faster. Consider a flower delivery service that delivers flowers in bud form. Buds keep the petals safe and ensure flowers are at peak freshness. And since buds can take several days to fully open, you’ll have even more time to display your bouquet.

When your flowers arrive, trim ½ to 1-inch off the stems at a 45-degree angle. This allows the flowers to take up water. Most delivery services advise changing the water every two to three days to keep flowers hydrated and to prevent the buildup of bacteria. Smith also points out that keeping flowers in ideal conditions at home helps extend their lifespan. “Place them somewhere relatively cool away from direct light and heat sources,” she says.

When shopping for flowers online, you’ll find a number of flower delivery services that ship flowers directly from the farms where they are grown. This ensures your flowers are at their freshest, unlike grocery store bouquets which can sit for days and are often handled by numerous people. Buying flowers online also allows you to ship to friends and family across the country and, in some instances, around the world. Many flower delivery services also allow you to select the exact date you’d like your flowers to be delivered.

Compare the Best Flower Delivery Services

How does flower delivery work.

Most flower delivery services make it easy to order arrangements on their websites so that you never have to speak to a representative. Typically, a service will clearly state whether a vase is included in the order. If not, you sometimes have the option to add one on, along with other items, such as food and candles. If a certain bouquet or plant is unavailable in your recipient’s location, many companies will let you know before you even add it to your cart.

How Much Does Flower Delivery Cost?

Flower delivery prices vary depending on the type and size of bouquet you order, as well as the delivery timeframe you request. The cheapest flower arrangements typically cost around $35, not including shipping fees. Many brands on this list also offer bouquets in the $100 to $120 range, but most arrangements are priced between $50 and $70. Companies that label themselves a "luxury service" may charge over $200 for their most basic designs.

How Long Does Flower Delivery Take?

One of the benefits of ordering flowers online is that you traditionally get to pick your delivery date. For services that don’t offer you a choice, like our best fresh flower delivery option , Poppy Flowers , delivery usually takes between five and seven days. Many services offer same- and next-day delivery, though this may be limited to certain locations and/or products.

Do You Tip for Flower Delivery?

If you’re sending a bouquet as a gift, it's customary to include a tip for the delivery person, assuming that’s an option at checkout. Between $2 and $5 is standard for a normal-sized arrangement. If you receive a bouquet, you’re certainly not obligated to tip on a gift, but if a local florist hand-delivers the arrangement, you may want to consider giving a few dollars. For funeral arrangements or large centerpieces that aren’t delivered to your home, tipping 15% to 20% is appropriate.

To determine the best flower delivery services, we reviewed nearly 30 companies. Each one was evaluated using the following set of criteria:

  • Price per delivery
  • Shipping fees
  • Nationwide availability
  • Flower variety
  • Subscription options
  • Same- and/or next-day delivery capabilities
  • Access to customer service
  • Commitment to sustainability
  • Available discounts

Companies with a wide variety of bouquets or subscription plans were given extra points in the scoring phase. Cost was also a leading factor, as was customer support and delivery timelines. Companies with limited shipping capabilities did not make it past the initial research stage.

Litter-Robot 4 Review: The Best Self-Cleaning Litter Box On The Market

The best folding treadmills, according to fitness experts, how we chose the best flower delivery services.

The staffers on our editorial team can vouch for many of these services firsthand, having received plants for product testing or as gifts from loved ones.

  • In particular, Jennifer Ferrise , our senior special projects editor who oversees gift guides, has enjoyed arrangements from The Bouqs Co , UrbanStems , 1-800-Flowers , From You Flowers and The Sill .
  • Other team members also back bouquets delivered by The Bouqs Co. as well as potted plants from Lively Root and BWH Plant Co .
  • We consulted flower delivery services expert, Kaylyn Hewitt , head of floral design at The Bouqs Co. , for guidance on what to look for in a bouquet when shopping online.
  • We included the flower delivery services with arrangements we would recommend or send to our own friends and family.
  • We focused on customer-favorite brands that offer a wide variety of blooms (and leaves) for every type of recipient.

Why Is It Better To Buy Pre-Arranged Flowers Online?

If you’ve ever tried making your own bouquet, you know that assembling a show-stopping arrangement is harder than it looks. When it comes to special occasions, it’s best to leave it to the pros. But don’t worry—despite enlisting expert help, a hand-picked flower arrangement still makes a heartfelt impression. “If you’re gifting, you’re able to cater your gift to the recipient while also purchasing something that’s been thoughtfully designed,” Kaylyn Hewitt, head of floral design at The Bouqs Co. , points out.

As far as shopping online (as opposed to, you know, picking up the phone or actually walking in to a florist shop), the best flower delivery services make picking and purchasing the perfect bouquet a seamless experience. Browsing online means you have access to thousands of options so you can pinpoint the one that’s right for your budget and your recipient’s style. Further, you can have your choice of well-known, big-box florists (who might offer the best and fastest delivery options) or ones that are, or are supplied by, small businesses that appreciate your support.

How Can I Make Fresh Flowers Last Longer?

Watching a gorgeous bouquet wilt is always a bit depressing, but (to put it poetically) the fleeting nature of its beauty is what makes flower-giving so indulgent and romantic. However, Hewitt says, “While different types of flowers have different vase lives, certain practices can help all flowers last as long as possible.” She shares some tricks of the trade below:

  • Prep your plants from the get-go. “Give your stems a fresh cut upon arrival to allow flowers to drink up as much water as possible,” Hewitt advises.
  • Keep a clean vessel. “You’ll want to use a clean vase to avoid any bacteria or fungi from growing, since that can speed up the death of your flowers,” she says.
  • Find a sweet spot. “Keep your flowers out of direct sunlight because the sun’s rays can shorten a flower’s vase life,” Hewitt instructs, adding that harsh rays can cause wilting.
  • Practice regular maintenance. “Changing the water every other day is extremely important, as well, to stop the build of harmful bacteria,” Hewitt explains, noting that cool water is best. And don’t forget to add flower food when you give your bouquet new water. When your blooms naturally start to wilt, prune dead leaves and petals to keep them looking as fresh as possible.

We Ordered Bouquets From 6 Online Flower-Delivery Services

travel flower company

There are just a few days until Valentine’s Day , and if you’re thinking of buying flowers for a special someone (or just yourself), a number of flower-delivery start-ups are now delivering unique bouquets with just a few clicks, often as quickly as the same day.

To find the best of the new players, we put six of these online florists to the test, ordering a bouquet from each and seeing how the arrangements stood up to shipping and a few days on display. We chose not to include delivery services like Floom and BloomNation , which are essentially marketplaces for local florists because, while their selections are terrific, the options vary widely based on your location. The same goes for big players in the flower-delivery space like 1-800-Flowers and FTD that function as middlemen between customers and local florists. Instead, we focused on services that arrange and deliver standardized flower arrangements, often shipped straight from the farms directly to the consumer. To determine which of the new services to use, we ordered a $50 bouquet (or as close to $50 as we could find) from each service, assessing the flowers delivered and determining which was best for what you’re looking for. Below, the results.

The Bouqs Co.

Ace

Selection: From a $36 bouquet of ten pink and purple Matthiola incana stems (vase not included) to a $78 “grand” bouquet of lilies, eucalyptus, poms, and Queen Anne’s lace, Bouqs offers one of the widest selections of arrangements. You can shop by flower type (if you’re crazy for hydrangeas ), or occasion (if you’re looking for the perfect bright and sunny birthday bouquet ), or even choose from a selection of plants like succulents in ceramic pots or a dramatic climbing ivy .

Our thoughts: Our grown-in-California flowers (the Ace arrangement) arrived two days after ordering (although you can opt for next-day or same-day delivery depending on the type of bouquet). As described on the site, the rainbow freesias (ours were purple, yellow, and white) came in bud form, which, while maybe not the most stunning upon first impression, lasted longer than some of the flowers that arrived already opened up. If you’re buying these as a gift, though, we’d recommend choosing an in-bloom variety — like this chrysanthemum, pink carnation, purple rose, and solomio bouquet , since the buds make for an underwhelming presentation.

TL;DR: These cut-to-order, straight-from-the-farm flowers are among the freshest you’ll find online and will last a while. Plus, if you have a specific type of bloom in mind, chances are it’ll be part of their wide selection.

Flowers that’ll arrive by Valentine’s Day:

Beauty-full

Selection: UrbanStems’ collection is tightly curated so their selection is smaller than some of their competitors. However, because they rotate their offerings frequently you can often find new arrangements for sale — especially if you choose one of their subscription packages. Currently featuring Valentine’s Day–themed bouquets, their options include the Romeo (assorted roses and eucalyptus) and the Pink Champagne (pink scabiosa, dianthus, and spray roses), ranging from $55 to $149, as well as bouquets arranged in collaboration with Vogue editors.

Our thoughts: Our flowers ( the Tinsel ) were delivered within two days of ordering in UrbanStems’ signature packaging that looks like a gift box. The arrangement came in beautiful condition and the thistle, yellow roses, berries, and eucalyptus looked fresh for several days after arrival. The mix of colors in the arrangement gave it a full, textured appeal. This one definitely generated some oohs and aahs upon arrival.

TL;DR: These were our absolute favorite — the ones we would get if we were to order our own based on the reasonable prices and unique arrangements.

The Lovebird

Farmgirl Flowers

How Sweet It Is

Selection: With new, seasonal arrangements offered every day, San Francisco–based Farmgirl Flowers prioritizes quality over quantity and keeps their selection limited to the freshest flowers available. Their options range from a simple $45 bouquet of lilies to a megasized $99 market box with foliage and seasonal blooms like ranunculus, roses, and protea. We also like their offbeat selections, like these ranunculuses in a tiger mug .

Our thoughts: Our bundle of tulips (the How Sweet It Is ) arrived looking lovely and perfectly packaged along with a box of macarons. With added extras like latte-shaped chocolates , Farmgirl’s offerings have a bit more personality — that’s a pro or con depending on the sensibility of your recipient. The vases they come in are a nice touch, though.

TL;DR: Because their bouquets sell out quickly, go with Farmgirl for an environmentally conscious recipient who isn’t necessarily looking for a specific flower. There are nice vase options if you’re looking for something different than standard glass, too.

Secret Gardenia

Selection: Starting at $55 for an “arrange your own” bundle of peach and white flowers with seasonal greens, H.Bloom’s wide-ranging selection includes an array of colors and varieties in display-ready vases, like the $85 Pink Berry (white hydrangea, pink roses, berries), the $125 Sunberry (green dianthus and yellow roses), and goes all the way up to a $375 Red Velvet bouquet of red roses, amaryllis, and orchids. You can also get plants like potted jade or high-end orchids .

Our thoughts: Our flowers arrived the next day (same-day delivery is also available) from a local florist (possibly because we ordered an arrange-your-own bouquet, the Soft and White Bundle ) in great condition. With white roses, white hydrangea, and eucalyptus, it was nearly identical to the arrangement on the site. Even with the DIY caveat, these looked professionally arranged and ready to show off.

TL;DR: If you’re willing to spend a little extra cash, go with one of these to make a big statement. These are what we’d get if money were no object.

Pastel Whispers

Benchmark Bouquets

Benchmark Bouquets Big Blooms With Vase

Selection: Compared to the more carefully selected arrangements found at UrbanStems or H. Bloom, the Benchmark Bouquets arrangements aren’t as visually exciting (in the office we compared them to “bodega flowers”), but the price can’t be beat. With two-day Prime shipping you can get a $36 bundle of multicolor lilies (vase included) or a $57 red rose and white lily arrangement. All the arrangements are under $60.

Our thoughts: Our Big Blooms arrangement arrived two days after ordering in a Benchmark-branded box with a vase and some flower food. With free shipping (for Prime members) the cost and convenience of the Benchmark Bouquets make up for the somewhat lackluster selection. We also like that a vase was included for an all-in-one gift at a price that beats out some of the “nicer” services.

TL;DR: If you’re on a tight budget, and love the convenience of Amazon Prime, these are a solid option — not the best, but serviceable.

Benchmark Bouquets 2-Dozen Blushing Beauty Roses With Vase

Selection: With KaBloom, like Benchmark, you’re going to see some standard-looking bouquets but at great prices and with fast Prime shipping. Go for their single-variety selections like these $47 pink roses or $24 tulips . KaBloom also offers attractive, blooming plants like pink cyclamen or red anthurium .

Our thoughts: Our arrangement arrived ready to display in a glass vase, right on time with two-day shipping. In the Let Them Eat Cake arrangement, the white hydrangeas helped fill out the bouquet of roses and carnations, but overall it did look a bit boring compared to the UrbanStems or H.Bloom bouquets.

TL;DR: Go with these if you want a simpler look (like a dozen red roses in a glass vase) at a relatively low price.

This Colorado Mountain Town Has the Most Beautiful Flower Field in the U.S.

Some of the world's most spectacular flower fields are found in the tiny mountain town of Crested Butte, Colorado.

Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. She now splits her time between Colorado and Paris, ensuring she doesn't have to live without skiing or L'As du Fallafel.

Of all the signs of spring — birdsong, spring training, green grass — none can quite compare to the return of flowers . Be it a bouquet from the farmers market or a field of colorful blooms, flowers usher in the arrival of warm weather, bidding farewell to winter with the bob of their head.

It is perhaps appropriate that the most beautiful flower fields in the U.S. (and the second most beautiful in the world) are located in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, where snow tends to linger. Crested Butte, Colorado, a tiny town nicknamed the “Wildflower Capital of Colorado ,” has long been a shining example of the state’s natural, high-alpine blooms. The annual Crested Butte Wildflower Festival , which runs for 10 days every July, showcases the colorful bounty.

The flower field ranking was facilitated by PremierInn.com and used eye-tracking software to record what images participants’ naturally lingered on. The longer participants looked at an image, the higher the flower field’s ranking. In the end, the Daisy Flower Field in Chile’s Torres del Paine National Park topped the charts, capturing participants’ gaze for an average of 3.89 seconds. Just behind the daisies of Chile was an image of the Crested Butte Wildflower Festival and Monet’s Garden in Giverny , which both had an “average fixation length” of 3.46 seconds and tied for second place.

Unlike Monet’s Garden, which is cultivated, the flowers showcased at the Crested Butte Wildflower Festival are completely wild. The blooms can be found anywhere from just outside town to 11,000 feet above sea level. It doesn’t hurt that the backdrop is dominated by peaks in the Rocky Mountain Range and accented by stands of aspen trees. The flowers range from delicate snow lilies and fairy slipper orchids to dwarf larkspur and Colorado blue columbines, the state flower.

To see the fields of wildflowers of Crested Butte, you have to hike from town and into the alpine — a journey that only adds to the experience (and wonder) of stumbling upon a field of colorful blooms. The Crested Butte Wildflower Festival, which runs July 12-2, 2024, proudly showcases the area's blooms through led hikes and over 200 workshops, including talks on the role of pollination, conservation , flowers as food, and photography and painting classes.

The top 10 most beautiful flower fields, according to the eye-tracking study, include one other U.S. destination, the Bluebonnet Fields in Ennis, Texas which was ranked No. 8 on the list.

1. Torres del Paine National Park Daisy Flower Field, Chile

=2. Monet's Garden at Giverny, France

=2. Crested Butte Wildflower Festival, U.S.

4. The Butchart Gardens, Canada

5. Mainau Island, Germany

A guide to exploring Japan in spring

From seeing the cherry blossom to navigating Golden Week, here's everything you need to know about visiting Japan at this time of year

kyoto, japan springtime at the historic higashiyama distirct

Japan's ever-popular cherry blossom season , when the sakura flowers come into bloom and decorate the country with delicate pink petals, does make springtime an obvious choice for visiting, however, and it wouldn't disappoint for those wanting to partake in hanami (the custom of admiring the beauty of the flowers).

But there's plenty more to spring in Japan than just cherry blossom, as you'll find out in this essential guide. From catching the plum blossom (there's not only cherry!) to colourful street parades, discover why spring is one of the best times to visit Japan . Be wary of busy Golden Week, though, about which we'll explain. Here's everything you need to know about Japan in spring...

The weather gets warmer

As in the UK, late March and April sees temperatures begin to rise, with Tokyo hitting averages of around 12-14 degrees by the afternoon in March and 17-19 degrees in April. Don't be fooled into thinking mornings and evenings will be balmy, however (temperatures can drop by half), so be sure to pack layers. Of course, if you're planning to stay or travel around the northern island of Hokkaido and its mountainous areas, you may still find snow in spring. Ski resorts on the island stay open as late as May.

public park in springtime during cherry blossom season, tokyo, japan

It's cherry blossom season

As we've already mentioned, spring is Japan's famous cherry blossom season . Millions of people in Japan – locals and visitors alike – eagerly wait for the country's cherry blossom flowers ( sakura in Japanese) to bloom, which then signifies that spring has finally sprung.

The sakura emerges in the south of Japan first, around the end of March, and advances north over the proceeding weeks. The pale pink flowers are only in bloom for a few weeks, during which time the Japanese celebrate with public events and picnics.

If seeing this fleeting floral sensation is on your bucket list, you can join Good Housekeeping for a cruise around Japan in March 2025 . On our 17-day trip you'll visit the likes of Tokyo, Kagoshima, Kochi and Aomori.

Other flowers come into bloom, too

It's not only the cherry blossom that flowers in spring in Japan. Avid anthophiles will be excited to know that a variety of Japan's flora comes to life in spring, including the lesser celebrated plum blossom. These sweet-smelling flowering, whose petals range from magenta or bubblegum pink to completely white, are usually in full bloom in February and March.

VISIT JAPAN WITH GH

Painting Japan's fields and parks pale blue is nemophila (commonly known as 'baby blue eyes'), a small flower that blooms from early April to early May. Great places to see swathes of them is at Hitachi Seaside Park in Ibaraki and Tsurumi Ryokuchi Park in Osaka. And from April to early May, it's likely you'll see purple wisteria winding its way up a trellis or around a porch somewhere in Japan, too. Kameido Tenjin Shrine in Tokyo is thought to be one of the best place to lilac-hued wisteria in all its glory.

You can visit Kameido Tenjin Shrine and more of Tokyo's highlights on a Good Housekeeping land tour of Japan in March 2025 . On this 13-day Japan holiday , you'll also visit Mount Fuji and the must-see cities of Osaka and Kyoto.

a short trip to hitachi seaside park on a weekend in april nemophila flowers were in full blossom on a sunny day front and back, left and right, up and down, it's all colored in bluehitachinaka city, ibaraki prefecture, japan

Be aware of Golden Week

Golden Week is a nation-wide holiday period in Japan, which takes place annually from 29 April to 5 May. The seven days encompass numerous public holidays and is one of the busiest holiday times of the year. The public holidays celebrated in Golden Week are Showa Day on 29 April, the birthday of Emperor Showa (the 124th emperor of Japan); Constitution Day on 3 May, a day commemorating the enactment of the 1947 Constitution of Japan; Greenery Day on 4 May, a day dedicated to celebrating the environment; and Children's Day on 5 May, a day when families pray for the health and happiness of their offspring.

Due to many of Japan's residents taking time off work in this period, Golden Week can mean transport hubs are incredibly busy, and hotels, attractions and restaurants can be booked up in advance. Visiting at this time is still possible if you plan ahead, but be wary if you're hoping to be more ad hoc with your itinerary.

There's a frenzy of festivals

As in many countries, spring signifies renewal and rejuvenation in Japan, and with that comes an array of public festivals and events that bring people outside and into burgeoning nature. As a visitor, it's a brilliant time to join the locals in their springtime celebrations.

Kairakuen Garden in Ibaraki Prefecture is one of the most famous gardens in Japan and plays hosts to Mito Plum Blossom Festival every February to March. Marking the end of winter and the arrival of spring, thousands of people visit to see the garden's 3,000 plum trees burst into life, showing off their pink and white petals.

While sakura season is celebrated all over Japan, the Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festival in Hirosaki Park, Aomori (23 April to 5 May) is a hotspot for petal peepers. The park has around 2,600 trees – some of which are over 300 years old – and showcases over 50 different species of cherry.

Moving from flower to floats, the city of Takayama in Gifu Prefecture hosts its annual spring festival on 14 and 15 April. Celebrations see parades of large, colourful floats and lanterns (and even a portable shrine) take to the streets along with musicians and dancers. Takayama Festival is touted as one of the most beautiful in all of Japan.

If you do plan to brave the crowds and holiday in Japan over Golden Week, you'll have the chance to witness Hakata Dontaku, Japan's largest festival. Held in Fukuoka on 3 and 4 May, thousands of people gather to see swathes of dancers and performers parade through the streets in brightly-coloured costumes. Look out for the hana jidosha (meaning flower bus), floats decorated with coloured flowers and lights.

Excited to explore Japan in spring? Whether you fancy a cruise around Japan or a land tour of this incredible country, book a Good Housekeeping holiday for a bucket-list Japan adventure.

Florence 'Rhody Fest': Find flowers and fun at one of Oregon's oldest festivals

travel flower company

Oregon's second-oldest flower festival, "Rhody Fest," is returning for its 117th edition to Florence starting May 16 with the theme "High Tides and Good Vibes."

"It'll be another year of 'good vibes' as we celebrate our local natural beauty and floral superstars," said Bettina Hannigan, Chamber President of the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce. "Thousands come from around the world to celebrate with us every year on the third full weekend in May."

Florence's Rhododendron Festival is the third oldest flower festival on the West Coast behind the Tournament of Roses in Pasadena, California and the Portland Rose Festival.

Rhododendrons are Florence's official flower and the Festival is scheduled in May every year when the wildflower begins to bloom in the city's surrounding hills and fields.

With its carnival, Rhododendron Court, parades, classic car cruise, vendor fair, and flower show, Hannigan reports that the festival is the unofficial kickoff to the summer tourism season, which adds $320 million to the local economy and employs about 2,700 of the roughly 5,000 workers in Florence.

The festival will open Saturday, May 11 with the coronation of Queen Rhododendron, the King of the Coast, and their royal court at the Florence events center, followed by Thursday's opening of the Davis Shows Carnival at the Port of Siuslaw property in Old Town.

Saturday, May 18 will feature the annual 5K Rhody Run and Walk, the junior parade and kids' activities, and the annual Coast Radio Classic Car Cruise through Old Town starting at 9 a.m. at Siuslaw Middle School.

On Sunday, the grand floral parade will make its way down Highway 101 and into Historic Old Town beginning at noon.

During the Festival, there will be a vendor's fair in Old Town down Maple Street, a Florence Regional Arts Festival at Florence Events Center, and live music and other festivities and activities all over town. Three Rivers Casino Resort will be running a shuttle to Old Town every 15 to 20 minutes on May 17 and 18.

"It's a family tradition, an Oregon institution," said Hannigan. "Generations of families have enjoyed the annual Florence Rhododendron Festival by attending, enjoying the Davis Shows carnival, exhibiting their rhododendrons, showing off their classic cars and motorcycles, being in parades, and shopping and dining in Old Town and all around town."

County Road 26 to open Monday for local, critical trips

Limited travel for commuters using the lake city cutoff opens after state and county collaboration as bridge closure continues.

Montrose and Gunnison Counties — This weekend, CDOT and Gunnison County are working together to accelerate improvements to County Road 26 (Lake City Cutoff) so it can open Monday for local commuter travel between Montrose and Gunnison.  At the same time, engineers continue to conduct safety inspections of the US Highway 50 bridge crossing the Blue Mesa Reservoir at Dillon Pinnacles. This bridge, located west of Gunnison at Mile Point 136.3, closed Thursday in the interest of public safety after an inspection revealed a crack in one of the girders. The technical structure name for the bridge is K-07-B.

Recognizing the US 50 closure creates a significant detour for commuters traveling between Montrose and Gunnison, CDOT and Gunnison County officials this weekend prioritized getting a shorter access route in place for local travel between the two communities. That collaboration will continue as officials work to further fortify the road with gravel and manage traffic to a level that the road can safely carry.

“We are starting slow in order to increase the chances we can go faster later. The impact on western Colorado cannot be understated and we are exhausting all opportunities and partnerships to mitigate the impacts of the bridge closure,” said Martin Schmidt, Assistant Gunnison County Manager for Public Works.

On Monday, April 22, pilot cars will lead  passenger vehicles through the access route two times a day in each direction. Because CR 26 is a high-mountain, unpaved road that is not intended to accommodate the traffic volumes of US 50, travel times will be limited and commercial vehicles exceeding a 16,001 gross vehicle weight rating are prohibited. The schedule for piloted travel is:

  • 6 to 6:30 a.m. and 6 to 6:30 p.m. for westbound travel
  • 7 to 7:30 a.m. and 7 to 7:30 p.m. for eastbound travel

The queue for westbound pilot car operations will start near the intersection of CO 149 and CR 26 and the queue for eastbound travel will start near the intersection of US 50 and CR 26. The travel time on the access route is expected to be 30 minutes or more.

County Road 26 will only be open for local, essential travel during these timeframes. The road will remain closed at all other times for the ongoing restoration work needed to ensure the road remains safe for travel.

A hotline and email continue to be in place to assist customers with questions about the closure. Anyone with questions can reach out via 970-648-4423 or [email protected] . Calls will be closely monitored and will receive a prompt reply. Information is also available on the project website at bit.ly/us50bridge . Travelers should refer to COtrip.org or the smartphone COtrip Planner app to plan an alternate route.

“CDOT appreciates Gunnison county’s dedication and hard work as we cooperate to offer more options to help the western slope manage this safety closure.  CDOT will continue to support the county as we focus on the opening of County Road 26 to serve the critical needs of residents,” said CDOT Executive Director Shoshana Lew. “County Road 26 is an important local route that is up to five hours more efficient than detouring via state highways. However, this road currently has a natural roadbed and can only accommodate limited traffic - so it is important that we help Gunnison County focus this capacity on the needs of local communities most impacted by the closure.”

There are two recommended detours for through travel via Interstate 70 to the north or US 160 to the south and these detours add six to eight hours of travel time. CDOT is coordinating with emergency service providers to ensure emergency response is unaffected.

Travel Impacts

  • US 50 is closed between Montrose and Gunnison
  • Recommended alternate routes are I-70 to the north or US 160 to the south
  • A limited, local detour is in place for travel at specific times

For years, a Michigan company has been the top pick to quickly personalize draftees' new NFL jerseys

ST. CLAIR SHORES, Mich. — Employees of the company tasked each year with rapidly personalizing jerseys for each first-round NFL draft pick as they are announced don’t need to travel very far for this year’s player selections in Detroit.

STAHLS’ headquarters in St. Clair Shores, Michigan, sits 17 miles (27 kilometers) from the stage where NFL commissioner Roger Goodell will inform players — and the world — that they have been selected by an NFL franchise.

“The draft coming back to Detroit is extra special for us,” said Brent Kisha, the company’s vice president of strategic sales.

The STAHLS’ team has under two minutes, from the moment each pick is made until Goodell greets him, to personalize the jerseys backstage in the Nike jersey room at the NFL Draft Theater.

The draft gets underway Thursday at Campus Martius Park downtown. It marks the 13th year the apparel decoration technology, software and equipment manufacturer has worked behind the scenes at the draft.

STAHLS’ took on heat-pressing duties in 2012, quickly affixing top pick Andrew Luck’s surname to an Indianapolis Colts jersey in New York. Since then, the company’s team has traveled to drafts held in Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, Nashville, Cleveland, Las Vegas, Kansas City and now its hometown.

“Historically, the jerseys only had a ‘No. 1,’ so putting a person’s name on it was like magic to the fans,” Kisha said Monday. “’Wow, this pick comes in, and we have literally less than two minutes to put the name on the back of the jersey. How do you do it?’

“The heat press is the secret sauce that enables us to be able to react to the actual pick itself,” he said.

That “secret sauce” is a Hotronix Fusion IQ heat press, a machine that features a high-resolution touch screen controller and is used by custom apparel businesses.

STAHLS’ personalizes two jerseys for each draft pick, including one handed to the player onstage and another that is used as part of his rookie playing card pack.

STAHLS’ creates nameplates for every potential in-person first-round draftee in all 32 NFL teams’ fonts and colors. And it will have eight jerseys per team on hand, in case there are day-of trades.

The company was born in the garage of A.C. Stahl and his wife, Ethel, in 1932. Initially known as Commercial Art Products, STAHLS’ now is a licensee and supplier to the NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB. The privately-held company has about 1,000 employees in North America, most of whom are based in Michigan.

Four, including Kisha, will be on name-affixing duty come Thursday.

“It sounds like, ‘Oh, man, that’s cool.’ And it is really cool. I’m very honored that I’ve been able to do it for Nike and the team for many years,” Kisha said. “But every year, in the beginning, until that first jersey goes on the stage, you’ve got butterflies.”
