What are the most important bicycle rules we should be aware of in Copenhagen?
Always keep to your right and make way for other cyclists wanting to overtake you. When you need to make left hand turns in intersections then you cannot turn diagonally with the cars. You will have to go straight across and then wait for the green light signal to go over again. For a more visual explanation then please see: http://cycleguide.dk/2010/05/how-to-do-a-hook-turn/
Using your phones while e-biking is also prohibited and you can get a fine should the police catch you. If you need to take pictures then make a full stop and do so.
Wearing safety helmets are not a requirement but at your own discretion, personal need for comfort safety. We do recommend it especially if you are not used to biking. We will always be advocates of putting your safety first and therefore helmets are included in all tours and rentals.

What Makes Copenhagen a Great Tourist Destination
Copenhagen is the capital city of Denmark, and its name has a Danish origin meaning a merchant’s harbor. This great tourist destination is the happiest city in the world. It is known to have the most friendliest people and great culture. You will love mouthwatering dishes in Copenhagen. The city also has several churches and museums that you can visit. It has an oceanic climate, but if you want to enjoy summer in Copenhagen, visit between June and July when the sun is out.
Since the weather in this city is unpredictable, it’s advisable to carry warm and light clothes to avoid inconveniences. However, Copenhagen is also a great place to visit during winter when it has beautiful Christmas markets with souvenirs and gifts. Copenhagen has a reliable public transport system you can use to move to different places. The busses, metros, s-train, and bicycles are available any time. All these are safe and affordable modes of transport for both locals and tourists. But you need to select the right modes of transport depending on the weather.
Where To Visit Copenhagen By Electric Bike
If you’re in Copenhagen, look for our bike tours for quality bikes to help you move to different tourist attraction sites around. You can visit the following places when in this city for example:
- The Citadel – This is one of the historical sites you can visit while in Copenhagen. It is one of the most maintained fortresses in northern Europe and was founded in 1626 by Danish king Christian 4. It has a unique pentagon shape with bastions on the corners, which is good for taking great pictures. It also houses a church windmill, some of the most beautiful places to relax in Copenhagen. The buildings in this area are currently used as military barracks and offices. However, it’s open to the public who would wish to jog or run. So, you can exercise to keep fit after spending some days cycling around this city.
- The Gefion Fountain – While in Copenhagen you can also spend some time in Gefion fountain, the largest fountain in Osterbro. It is in Langelinie Park. This large monument is believed to be a goddess of wishing well. This fountain has a large-scale group of oxen pulling a plow and is driven by the Norse goddess. According to history, the goddess ploughed the island of Zealand out of Sweden with the help of four oxen. With the assistance of her four powerful oxen sons, they managed to get deep into the ground, raising the land and pulling it into the sea, resulting in the island of Zealand.
- The Little Mermaid – Another outstanding tourist attraction in Copenhagen is this little mermaid statue. It was founded in 1938 by Danish brewer Carl Jacobsen. But the bronze and granite sculptures were inspired by Christian Andersen based on a fairy tale theme. It was unveiled/created by Edvard Eriksen in 1913. According to Andersen’s fairy tales, a mermaid came out of the sea because she had fallen in love with a prince. Since the prince didn’t love her, she had to go back to the sea. You can use a boat tour to see the mermaid from a closer view. However, since it’s perched on a rock, it’s better to see it while on an e-bike on the land, which offers a great viewpoint.
Why Explore Copenhagen By E-Bike?
Copenhagen is the world’s leading city for cycling which saw it win the title of the European green capital in 2014. The road network in this city encourages the use of bikes and that’s why it has less cars than bikes. The innovative bridges and superhighways make it a safe place to cycle on an e-bike to any destination in Copenhagen. The routes and cycling paths offer scenic views you’ll enjoy watching while on the go. You can take the shorter or longer routes leading out of town depending on your plans for the day and enjoy. Some popular routes to consider cycling are the circle bridge-Cirkelbroen, the Amager strand beach park, or the harbor circle route. However, you must abide by the rules like cycling on the right lane and using signals to prevent accidents.
Touring Copenhagen by bike is also a good choice as it allows you to interact with different people as it’s the common means of transport. You will get to feel the friendliness and how happy the people in this region are. Moving around with an e-bike in Copenhagen also enables you to understand the road rules and culture. You will avoid fines and unnecessary confrontations with the authorities. Opt for a Copenhagen electric bike if you want to discover the city’s historical sites and culture. You will connect to different destinations through a bike, saving you some cash that you’d have used to hire a taxi.
Further Advantages Of Using An E-Bike
Currently, people are working towards reducing their carbon footprint globally. So, if you are in this course, consider using an e-bike for your Copenhagen tours. This bike will enable you to reach different corners without straining. It will also allow you to cover longer distances encountering no challenges. You will also not get stuck in traffic when using an electric bike in Copenhagen, which means you’ll be saving time. The most outstanding reason to choose this bike is that it’s safer and faster. This will let you reach your destination faster, which is a plus for a tourist who wants to visit more attractions in a day. The electric bike will also keep you fit as pedaling helps burn calories and improve muscle endurance. So, if you’re looking to rent a bike in Copenhagen, check out our bike tours and enjoy going to different places within the city with ease.

Cargo e-bike rentals, see what our guests are saying, claudine o, feb 2020 | tripadvisor.
Our tour already happened in June 2018, but we still speak about all the interesting things and facts we learned. Andreas took a lot of time to answer all the questions and get into a discussion about all the different topics he mentioned. Driving with the bikes was a bit scary but we got used to it very quickly. Sitting and driving through this lovely city was wonderful. The whole tour was a blast! Don’t hesitate to book a tour with Andreas!
Melykee, Feb 2020 | TripAdvisor
I thought it would be hard but the bike was so comfy and the electric engine was so good that I barely felt the effort…so I kept peddling for the rest of the tour lol. On top of all that, Andreas is one of the kindest, patient and personable guys I ever met. We had such a great chat throughout and it felt more than a service being delivered. It was a human encounter and a great cultural lesson.
Ramirez, Jan 2020 | TripAdvisor
Andreas was a great communicator throughout our planning process and was very flexible with our plans revolving around the winter weather. Though it was cold out we were comfortable bundled up and with the blankets, mittens, and tea that he provided. We highly recommend this beautiful tour of Copenhagen. This was a highlight of our European winter trip.
Steve, Feb 2020 | Airbnb
The knowledge and insight were great and we learned far more about Copenhagen, past and present than we could have any other way. The bikes are brilliant, well worth it if you are considering doing the trip!
Louise, Jan 2020 | Airbnb
This was the best Tour ever! Magical experience for 3 hours feeling like a local. Saw many secret places and loved the wind blowing in my ears as we moved along the bike lanes. Andreas was so interesting and sensitive to everyone’s needs. The electric bike was easy to handle and the rugs and waterproofs kept us warm and dry. We left in a real high, keen to do it all again!! Brilliant stuff!!

Rent a bike in City center
Copenhagen’s city centre, a.k.a. Indre By is easy to mark out on a map because it’s surrounded by water – be that canals, the lakes or the sea, all beautiful to ride your rental bike along. Naturally, you’ll want to include popular attractions on your bike route, such as Nyhavn, the Little Mermaid (Tiny Mermaid would be more accurate, though) or Rosenborg Castle. But there are also lots of parks and green areas (Kongens Have, Ørstedsparken and Kastellet come to mind), as well as countless mazy streets with cosy cafés, tiny design shops or lavish department stores to get lost in. Worth mentioning are Paludan Café for a relaxing break and a bite, and the Hay store for the coolest Danish design shopping session.
Rent a bike in Nørrebro
This hood is poetic chaos. It’s vibrant, colourful and multicultural, with virtually no wall left untouched by urban art and social discourse. If you fancy a street art treasure hunt, you’ll want to read about our street art bike tour first. Rent a bike in Nørrebro and take your time to explore the area. Don’t miss The Red Square (Den Røde Plads), where the Green Path bike-only route passes. If you keep riding on Nørrebrogade, you’ll reach the lakes and the beautiful Dronning Louises Bro – a popular hangout for locals and travellers alike. Another must is riding through Assistens Cemetery – trust us, it’s not your regular graveyard.
Rent a bike in Frederiksberg
Frederiksberg is Nørrebro’s neighbour, as well as its antonym, which is why it’s particularly nice to cycle between them back to back to feel how the air changes from one area to the other. Frederiksberg is so neat and peaceful, with beautiful façades and fancy cafés (including delicious cheesecake), flower shops and lots of baby strollers. There are some particularly nice streets you can ride your Donkey bike by, such as Falkoner Alle, Gammel Kongevej (when it’s not peak hour) or Frederiksberg Alle. Also, you have one of the biggest green areas in Copenhagen nearby, made up of Frederiksberg Have, Søndermarken (check out the Cisternerne art gallery here!) and Solbjerg Kirkegård – with the Frederiksberg Palace right in the middle of all that.
Rent a bike in Christianhavn
Christianshavn is technically part of Indre By – so lots of canals to ride along here as well. However, this neighbourhood has its very own charm to be explored by bicycle with a fresh breeze in your hair. You’ll find the famous Freetown Christiania here, with so many bohemian spots in and around it to discover. It’s actually a good idea to save some time for a dedicated Christiania bike tour, and see if you can discover this hidden beach – it’s really a special spot you won’t regret searching high and low for. If you happen to get hungry while you’re in Christianshavn, make sure you stop by Papirøen, or Copenhagen Street Food. Other attractions and cool sights in the area are: the Church of Our Saviour, the Royal Danish Opera House, the very new and cool Copenhagen Contemporary art centre.
Rent a bike in Østebro
The district of Østerbro is located north of Copenhagen’s city centre. On the map, it starts where The Lakes (Søerne) end and extends all the way to Hellerup in the suburbs. Østerbro is currently very attractive as a residential area, so you could spend an entire day just cycling across its streets, staring at the posh façades, peaking into green backyard oases or going full gourmet in some fashionable delicatessen. Alternatively, you can take your rental bike through Østerbro’s natural riches – on a ride in Fælledparken or to the beach, at Svanemøllen. Here are a few places worth stopping by fancy Original Coffee at Trianglen, low-key Café Bopa, high-brow Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art, and hippie Candy Factory.
Rent a bike in Vesterbro
This is an all-time darling of Copenhagen’s neighbourhoods. There are lots of spots to explore on your rental bike in Vesterbro. There’s the very popular Meatpacking district, a.k.a. Kødbyen, which has evolved from trading livestock to trading beers for cigarettes in some hip bar’s entrance cue. There is also the Carlsberg Brewery to visit, which feels like going to the museum, but with lots of alcohol. And then there are quirky flea markets on Sønder Boulevard, unconventional art galleries and Instagram-heaven bistros (Mikkeller Bar, WarPigs and Bakken, to name a few), as well as beautiful murals you can suddenly discover on side streets as you cycle around.
Rent a bike in Amager
What’s on the other side of the bridge? Amager, once known as “boring island” is an island south of downtown Copenhagen, whose reputation is slowly starting to change. Until the 2000s, the district was not connected to the metro network, and to the city center was only reachable by car or by renting a bike on Amager – which in reality is only 10 minutes ride! Between the largest street food court in Northern Europe (Reffen), the beautiful beach of Amager strand where you can practice water sports, the ocean museum Den Blå Planet or the nature reserve that hosts hundreds of bird species, Amager is the perfect playground for lovers of cycling and authentic experiences.
Rent a bike in Nordvest
Nordvest is surely a neighborhood you’ve never heard of… until you step foot in it! Fashionistas should definitely stop by the YouHeShe boutique and browse through its collection of clothing and accessories. Another local favorite is the Bispebjerg Cemetery. This huge park is great for biking, running and relaxing. In the spring, when the Japanese cherry trees bloom, they become a top destination for Instagrammers. Stop by Sirius café, TribecaNV New York restaurant or the excellent Zorro Pizza to get a taste of life in Nordvest.
What to do in Copenhagen

Stroll at Tivoli Gardens
Whether you prefer rides, music or just want to enjoy the gardens, Tivoli is the perfect place for a fun adventure. It even inspired Hans Christian Andersen and Walt Disney. Founded in 1843, Tivoli Gardens has become a national treasure and an international attraction. Part of its secret is that there is something for everyone. The scenery is filled with exotic architecture, historic buildings, and thousands of colored lights at night. The fairytale atmosphere is unique.
Put colors into your life at Nyhavn
Originally a commercial port where ships from the whole world would dock, Nyhavn is now renovated and dominated by colorful restaurants. As you walk beside the canal, you will enjoy a relaxed atmosphere, music and great food. Try some smørrebrød, the local speciality which consists in an open sandwich with fresh topping (shrimps, beef, vegetables) and make sure to take the perfect picture in front of the number 17. When biking in Nyhavn, pay extra attention to the crowd though!
Enjoy incredible food at Reffen food court
In this organic street food market, all of the stalls have to follow the sustainable dogmas "Reduce and Reuse". Use compostable food service, reduce food waste, use organic, free-range and local ingredients if possible. The goal is to create a melting pot with not only food but the overall cultural experience that attracts and inspires both locals and tourists. The hardest part will be to choose your meal between dozens of different stands celebrating food from all around the world.
Enjoy a city castles bike tour
In the heart of Copenhagen, Amalienborg Palace has the seat of one of the world's oldest monarchies and is a real royal palace. When visiting, don't miss the opportunity to watch the changing of the guards. Another beautiful castle, set in the King's Garden, is within a few minutes by bike. Rosenborg Castle was built by Danish king Christian IV, in the 17th century. It features 400 years of royal treasures, and the Crown Jewels. Lastly, make sure to finish the castle tour in Christiansborg Palace. Once home to kings and queens, now houses the Danish Parliament, the Supreme Court, and the Ministry of State.

Copenhagen by bike – touring denmark’s capital on two wheels.
This article may contain compensated links. See our full disclosure here
Nothing says Copenhagen quite like the breezy way its citizens glide through her streets on their bikes. The city embodies bike culture and is frequently named the best city for cycling in the world.
So why not join in the fun and tour Copenhagen on two wheels. You can ride the city, see the sights and experience Danish culture all at the same time. Fantastisk! “That’s Danish for fantastic” – as my Copenhagener friend Erin would say. All you need to do is rent a bike.
Bike culture in Copenhagen
Denmark always appears at the top of the world’s happiest countries lists as well as among the leaders in cycling culture . This is probably not a coincidence if you ask me. I find driving stress pretty intolerable.
The people of Copenhagen love to cycle with over 50% of the population commuting to work, school or university by bike. Everyone does it, even the Crown Princess!
In Copenhagen, there are over 450 kilometres of bike paths, many of which are slightly raised and clearly marked. This ensures a feeling of safety as you pedal the city’s roads.
Last but not least, the terrain is flat making the conditions ideal for a leisurely cycle for all types of riders including families.
Highlights of Copenhagen: A self-guided bike tour
I’ve created a little tour to show you the highlights of Copenhagen. At 10.5km and on flat terrain I rate this tour as easy as it could also be done on foot. We hired bikes and rode around Copenhagen as a family, and it was such an enjoyable ride.
Here is a map of my suggested tour of Copenhagen stopping at most of the highlights. Clicking on the map will take you straight to Google Maps where you can add to your smartphone or print if you are old school – including all the streets and turns. The details of the stops are below.
You could start at any point along the map as it is a circuit. I think beginning at Nørreport station is a good idea as you can easily pick up bikes there and have a coffee and breakfast at Torvehallerne market before heading on your way.
We liked the porridge with extras at Grød which is open from 7.30am on weekdays and 9.00am on weekends.
From Nørrebro station, head northeast along Øster Voldgade past the Botanic Gardens and Rosenborg Castle and follow the route until you reach Langelinie, home to Copenhagen’s most famous citizen – The Little Mermaid.
The Little Mermaid
The statue of the Little Mermaid was inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale of the same name written in 1837. She is a tiny little thing who looks shyly at the water as hundreds of tourists try to snap a selfie. Many people are disappointed with how small the statue is but she is an iconic symbol of the city and one you would regret missing.
Nearby: Kastellet – a 17th-century star-shaped fortress with lovely grounds and a windmill
It’s a very short ride past Kastellet and its moat to your next stop.
Gefionspringvandet and St Albans Church
You can’t miss the magnificent Gefionspringvandet fountain featuring the Norse goddess Gefjon designed by Danish artist Anders Bundgaard. The fountain sits next to St Albans Church, also known as the English Church as it was built to serve the English population of the city.
Nearby: peaceful Churchill Park renamed in 1965 to commemorate Winston Churchill and British assistance in the liberation of Denmark during World War II.
Back on your bike again for another short ride down Amaliegade to Amalienborg Palace
Amalienborg Palace
Home of Queen Margrethe II, Amalienborg Slot or Palace was built around a central square where you can see magnificent views of the harbour and nearby Frederiks Kirke with its distinctive domed roof.
I love that the palace, just by virtue of its design, is so accessible to the people of Copenhagen. You can tour the palace and if you time your tour right, you can see the daily changing of the guard that happens at 12:00 noon in the square. You’ll need to be there a little earlier to get a good spot for viewing.
Nearby: Amalienhaven park and fountain where you can get close to the water for views across to the modern Opera House or relax in the peaceful gardens
Next ride towards Frederiks Kirke and around it to reach Store Kongensgade towards Kongens Nytorv and Nyhavn.
Built in the 17th century Copenhagen’s colourful harbour is simply a great place to wander, relax and watch the people and boats leave and enter the harbour.
If you wanted to take a break from riding, you could join a boat tour of Copenhagen from here. Tours leave every 15 minutes in summer, and you get another perspective of the city from the water. It’s touristy but fun and if you’re lucky you could see one of the bridges being raised to let the tall ships through.
Nearby: Take a walk to the harbourfront where you will see the impressive modern building that houses the Royal Danish Theatre
Hungry yet? Head across the newly opened Inderhavnsbroen and visit Papiroen or Paper Island for lunch
Paper Island
Paper Island is where you find Copenhagen Street Food. This hugely popular venue houses a huge number of street food vendors in a converted warehouse. On my second visit to Copenhagen, I went back there just to taste Duck It’s pulled duck burger I’ve been thinking about since my first visit. The food stalls open from 12.00 noon each day and you will not leave hungry.
Now head off Paper Island and onto Prinsessegade where you will find your next stop
Freetown Christiania
Freetown Christiania is an alternative car free and green community in the heart of Copenhagen. The neighbourhood of around 850 residents is found in the grounds of a former military barracks and has been self-governing since its foundation since its foundation by hippies in 1971.
A visit to Christiana is an interesting insight into a unique society. You can wander the streets and visit cosy cafes and craft shops. We took a walk around the beautiful lake and enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere.
The area is notorious for its “Green Light District” and Pusher Street where drugs are freely bought and sold despite being illegal in Denmark. You are advised not to take photos in this area and should take that advice seriously. Read more about Freetown Christiania .
Nearby: Baroque Vor Frelsers Kirke with its famous helix spire that can be seen throughout Copenhagen
Time to head north-west down Torvegade and across the canal to Slotsholmen
Christiansborg Palace and Slotsholmen
As the seat of Danish government, Christiansborg is a complete contrast to Freetown Christiania. Home to the Folketinget or Danish Parliament, it is a former royal palace and as grand as that description implies.
You can visit the state rooms and royal kitchens as well as the ruins of the original medieval castle beneath its foundations or take in views of the city from the tower
Christiansborg is on the small island of Slotsholmen where there are several other museums and attractions such as the Danish Stock Exchange. Visiting hours are from 10:00am.
Tip – you can park your bike in the Rigsdag Courtyard
Now ride into Indre By, Copenhagen’s true centre, and down Nikolaj Plads and Kristen Bernikows Gade to your next stop
Rundetaarn – the Round Tower
If you’re interested in astronomy, you won’t want to miss the Rundetaarn, the oldest working observatory in Europe. There are wonderful views of the city from the viewing platform accessed by a spiral staircase to the top of the tower. Rundetaarn is open from 10:00am – more information .
Head down Landemærket for the last stop on your bike tour – the beautiful King’s Gardens and Rosenborg Slot. You will need to park your bike at the entrance and walk through the gardens.
Rosenborg Castle
One my favourite castles in the world, Rosenborg Castle has fairy-tale qualities. Originally a royal summer house, the castle lies in the Renaissance style King’s Gardens and is surrounded by a small moat.
Rosenborg Slot was built in the Dutch Renaissance style by King Christian IV and has several turrets and an impressive hall. You can visit the castle and view a collection of the Danish Crown Jewels as well as many of the state rooms.
More information about visiting Rosenborg Slot
And that’s the end of your tour! Head back to Nørreport station by riding along Gothersgarde and turning left at Nørre Voldgade
Explore Copenhagen’s neighbourhoods by bike
Now you’ve explored the highlights why not venture beyond the city centre and discover Copenhagen’s laid back neighbourhoods.
Take a ride out to Nørrebro through Assistens cemetery and browse the boutiques and cafes along Jægersborggade. You can get a great coffee at the Coffee Collective, try new Nordic cuisine at Manfreds and indulge in some special ice cream at Istid. Assistens Cemetry is worth a stop to visit the grave of Hans Christian Anderson too.
If you’re travelling with kids, I recommend a trip to Østerbro where you can explore Fælledparken. This huge park has playgrounds and activities for children of all ages. Our kids loved learning about the rules of the road in a traffic school playground and jumping on trampolines and the huge swings close by.
I was most impressed with the coffee tuk tuk keeping the parents of Copenhagen caffeinated as they watched their kids play.
Copenhagen bike rental
We rented bikes with Donkey Republic who have around 700 bicycles in convenient locations around the city. All you need to do is download their app and locate one of their bicycles close by. This is easy, even among a throng of Danish bikes, as they all sport vibrant orange stickers.
You then book your bike for however long you need it and use the app to unlock it. Once you’ve adjusted your seat and had a little test ride you are ready to go!
Tip: Look for one of the newer bikes with a holder for your phone, so you can navigate your route safely and with ease
No doubt you will want to stop and get off your bike and take a look around. With your Donkey bike, you just use the app to lock it up safely and unlock it again when required.
When it is time to return your bike, you simply take it back to where you found it. The bike is then registered as returned.
You can rent a bike in Copenhagen with Donkey Republic starting from DKK 100 per day – around £10. There is a small optional charge if you want to insure the bike against theft.
Family bike hire
We travelled to Copenhagen as a family and had some special requirements for bike hire. At the time of writing our kids were not yet 4 years old. I really wanted to try out the famous 3 wheeled Christiana cargo bikes .
Donkey Republic were able to help with this by engaging one of their local partners. Do give them a call if you want to hire a family bike in Copenhagen and I am sure they’ll do their best to assist.
Road rules and tips for riding in Copenhagen
Familiarise yourself with road rules and etiquette before embarking your tour or hiring a bike in Copenhagen.
Here are the main points:
✪ Danes ride and drive on the right-hand side of the road. Keep to the right at all times unless overtaking
✪ Helmets are not required to be worn by law
✪ Bike lanes must be used when present. You may not ride on footpaths
✪ You must use hand signals to indicate if you are turning or stopping
✪ When turning left, cross to the opposing right corner and wait for the traffic light to change before proceeding
✪ Headlights must be used at and after dusk
✪ Helmets are not required to be worn by law but you can hire helmets , and it’s a good idea
I found this sheet of bike riding rules helpful and this site of Danish road signs
You can take your bike on public transport in Copenhagen with some common sense restrictions such as not bringing bikes on trains during peak hour. Family cargo bikes are not allowed on public transport.

Our friend Erin who lives in and writes about Copenhagen served as our guide however if you are new to the city, are a bit nervous about riding and don’t have local connections; I recommend joining a bike tour.

An E-Bike Ride In South LA And How You Can Rent One For Free
- An e-bike tour of South L.A.
Turning points for justice in South L.A.
Without infrastructure, too soon for e-bikes.
On a recent spring Saturday, about 20 people gathered in a parking lot of a building off of Florence Avenue in South L.A. They each stood by a brand new, bright orange electric bike.
“How often do we get to experience electric bikes in South L.A.?” said Adé Neff, founder of Ride On Bike Shop in Leimert Park. “Electric bikes are all over the city. But they're not within South L.A.”
Until now. Neff is part of a coalition of community-based groups that helped launch a new e-bike rental program called South Central Power Up .
The program brings 250 e-bikes to South L.A., where, after a safety training, residents will be able to get an e-bike to take home for at least a month, and then they will be able to renew the bike for free, for the first six months of the program. After that, they’ll be able to rent them for a small fee that will be determined later.
Learn more about South Central Power Up here and how to take check out an e-bike .
It’s part of a growing trend to make e-bikes more widely accessible — e-bikes run at least a few hundred bucks, and more often are more than $1,000. And, most car trips we take are relatively short , so e-bikes can help replace those miles and have a significant impact on climate pollution as well as help folks save money on gas. The South L.A. program is modeled after similar programs in Pacoima and Wilmington .
Many of these programs are still in their pilot phases.
- San Pedro, Wilmington and Harbor City
- San Gabriel Valley
The goal is to bring a climate friendly and money-saving mode of transportation to an area that lacks dependable public transportation, has disproportionate levels of air and climate pollution, and where high gas prices are particularly burdensome.
“We're offering opportunities to folks that will allow them to have more autonomy and agency over their travel and commute,” said Lena Williams, program director for People for Mobility Justice, one of the community-based groups spearheading the program.
We're offering opportunities to folks that will allow them to have more autonomy and agency over their travel and commute.
Williams said they aim to serve street vendors and other entrepreneurs such as delivery drivers, and people who frequently use public transportation or walk or bike to get around, as well as folks who want to save on gas money, or just have some fun on a bike without the physical exertion of a traditional bike.
The South Central Power Up program is funded by California Climate Investments, which uses money from Cap-and-Trade auctions to fund programs that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve public health. Learn more here .
“There’s a place for e-bikes within our society and our communities,” said Neff. “I was on a bike for 10 years in L.A. — I didn't have an electric bike. And I was going from South L.A. to Santa Monica to Long Beach to Pasadena, downtown and by the time I got to my destination, I'm winded, I'm sweaty. Whereas, I can get on the e-bike and get to my destination and I'm not exerting that much energy.”

But on this particular Saturday, the group is going for a ride on the new e-bikes to have some fun and learn about South L.A. and the long fight for environmental and social justice.
South L.A. resident Patrena Shankling, 62, came out to try the bikes with her 32-year-old son Lonnie, who joined from Bellflower.
“I want to get out of my car and get some exercise in,” said Shankling. “It's good for the environment, good for me, health-wise.”
She said she also wants to save money on gas.
South L.A. resident and community advocate Blanca Lucio said she’s long used regular bikes to get around but this is her first time on an electric one.
“Tengo muchos años este usando bicicleta,” she said. “En mi comunidad, la gente siempre anda caminando, anda en el bus, entonces cuando yo llegué a vivir en sur centro, yo era la mamá que siempre llevaba a los hijos en la bicicleta, la dejarlos a la escuela.”
“I have for many years used a bicycle,” she said. “In my community, people are always walking, taking the bus, so when I came to South Central I was the mother who always took the children on the bicycle to drop them off at school."
She said e-bikes are one way to get around more easily and address air pollution, an issue that’s particularly important to her.
Zaakiyah Brisker grew up in South L.A. and only uses a bike to get around. She got rid of her car because of the financial stress of paying the car off, the registration, and maintaining the vehicle, but also because it’s better for the environment.
“When I started riding my bike, it was easier because I used to live in mid-city and all of the shopping that I would do would be in Culver City, which is a totally walkable neighborhood,” Brisker said. “Since moving back to South Central, it's been a challenge because this is not a walkable area. But I love riding my bike so much and I believe in the values of not harming the planet and not adding to climate change as much as possible, especially as it relates to hood areas like South Central.”
It’s one reason why Brisker is a communications associate at Strategic Concepts in Organizing and Policy Education , or SCOPE for short, a long-time civil rights organization in South L.A. and another partner on the project, and the launching point for our ride today.
After a safety briefing and getting comfortable on the bikes in the parking lot, it’s time to head out on our ride.
We get off to a rough start. As soon as we tried to cross Florence Avenue, an aggressive driver tried to nose through our line of bikes crossing the street — evidence of the dangers bikers face every day on L.A. roads, especially here in South L.A., which has some of the least infrastructure for bikes.
But we safely make it to our first stop — the corner of Florence and Normandie, the very spot where the 1992 unrest began.
Once we got off Florence and onto quieter neighborhood streets, everyone started to relax and have some fun. Soon, the party grew.
Juan Brown, 21, and his buddy decided to join us on their own bikes. They popped wheelies and did other tricks, riding alongside us as we and people watching from outside their homes cheered.
“I ride my bike every day,” Brown said. “For fun, to get around, everything. It's bike life all day.”
But he said dangerous drivers and the lack of infrastructure for bikes is a major, and sometimes deadly, challenge. He says he’s lost friends who have been hit by cars. But it hasn’t stopped him. He said that’s because of the community that biking provides.
Our next stop is Exposition Park, where we talk about how gentrification and housing costs around USC are impacting the community. Next, we head to a former oil drilling site that, after a decade of organizing, the community successfully got shut down.
We end our ride at Village Market Place off Vermont, which sells fresh, locally grown produce and other goods at an affordable price. And, by the way, it’s powered by solar panels.
The ride was 12 miles altogether, but all of us barely broke a sweat.
Each stop we made on our ride showed how the climate problem is really a justice problem, like how the racism and disinvestment that sparked the L.A. uprising is the very same disinvestment that makes south L.A. worse off when it comes to climate impacts such as extreme heat. And how the climate crisis intersects with food insecurity, and housing costs driving displacement and exacerbating financial stress.
But each stop also revealed the opportunity to turn that around — such as the former oil drilling site, which has been bought by a community trust that has the goal of turning it into a park with permanent affordable housing. Or how growing food locally is a way to boost health and resilience. And the effort to get e-bikes here and get more people out of cars and spur deeper investment in bike infrastructure and public transportation.
The threads tying it all together were the folks who have long pushed for these changes in south L.A.

Throughout the ride, the lack of safe street infrastructure was glaringly obvious. It’s a problem across L.A., but more so in South L.A, where potholes are rampant, bike lanes are few and far between, and protected bike lanes are nonexistent.
So is it too soon to be pushing e-bikes?
“The streets of South Central are notoriously dangerous, whether you're walking, biking, driving,” Williams said. “But I think there is something super, super important about actually just taking up space — people being seen in this way that says, ‘This is what we're doing. The streets are intended to be multi-modal and we want to show the ways that we can coexist.’”
The slow progress on improving bike infrastructure has been a challenge that the e-bike lending program in Pacoima, Electro-Bici , which has now run for nearly three years, has also faced, said Miguel Miguel, policy director with Pacoima Beautiful, the grassroots group that is heading the project there.
“We're creating a program in a community where a program like this, the infrastructure for it, wasn't ever really thought of,” Miguel said. “It's almost like we're trying to paint the wall right before we fix the drywall. So some of the challenges have been like, we're offering this service, but how do community members now utilize the actual transportation network to be able to go from point A to point B.”
The huge lack of even the simplest infrastructure such as bike racks to lock bikes at destinations like grocery stores is also a major barrier, Miguel said. But that hasn’t made the program a failure — far from it actually. Miguel said one big lesson learned has been that the “need” doesn’t always have to come before the “want.”
“This is an activity that community members have been asking for, for a while, but unfortunately there's some true income inequality issues that don't allow folks to have access even just to a regular mechanical bike,” Miguel said. “If we come into this first thinking we want to repair people's relationship with their inner child, we want to repair people's relationship with what it is to have a bike – I think that's what these programs are.”
If we come into this first thinking we want to repair people's relationship with their inner child, we want to repair people's relationship with what it is to have a bike — I think that's what these programs are.
Miguel said many of the folks who regularly use the e-bikes through Pacoima’s program are either on the older side or the younger side, and rather than only using it to get to and from work or run errands, they’re often using the bikes for exercise, or to go to the park, or just ride around with friends.
“This is an opportunity to have community members step aside from the day to day of working, of living in a city, and into just being a child for a while and just enjoy playing and healing through playing.”
Williams would agree.
Biking is medicine. If we allow the fears to keep us from getting there, it's such a detriment to our experience.
“Biking is medicine. If we allow the fears to keep us from getting there, it's such a detriment to our experience,” Williams said.
So e-bikes may be great for saving money on gas and getting around sustainably (they can truly help lower climate pollution ), but they’re also just plain fun. And having fun — experiencing joy — well, that’s an important piece of building resilience too.
