Understanding USPS Weekend Delivery

Imagine this – It’s a lazy Sunday afternoon, and you’re expecting a package. You know USPS delivers on weekends, but can you expect your package today? Well, the answer is yes.

USPS does deliver on Sundays, but not all types of mail are eligible for Sunday delivery. It’s limited to specific services.

You might wonder why USPS delivers on Sundays. The rationale is straightforward. With the surge in e-commerce the volume of packages has increased, especially during the holiday season. To prevent backlogs and ensure timely deliveries, USPS has extended its services to include the ability for USPS to deliver a package on Sunday, based on mail volume.

Weekend delivery is pretty much like weekdays, but on Sundays, only certain packages get delivered.

Sunday Services at a Glance: What USPS Delivers

Curious about which services are eligible for Sunday delivery? Here’s the details:

USPS offers Priority Mail Express deliveries on Sundays. Additionally, Amazon packages can also be delivered on Sundays via USPS.

That’s right! While you’re lounging in your pajamas, USPS is out there, ensuring your Amazon parcels and Priority Mail Express packages reach their destination.

But what about standard mail services like First-Class Mail and Retail Ground? Do they make the Sunday delivery cut?

Unfortunately, no.

USPS doesn’t deliver standard mail services like First-Class Mail and Retail Ground on Sundays. Sunday delivery by USPS is exclusive to Priority Mail Express and specific Amazon packages.

The Specifics of USPS Sunday Delivery

Getting down to the nitty-gritty, the Sunday delivery by USPS revolves around two primary services – Priority Mail Express and Amazon Packages.

Wondering what sets these services apart? Here’s the specifics:

  • Priority Mail Express is like the superstar of USPS services. It’s the only one that promises Sunday delivery, but here’s the catch – you have to pay extra for this VIP treatment.
  • Thanks to the guarantee, you can get your money back.
  • This service offers you overnight shipping to most places and even throws in signature confirmation for free if you ask
  • Plus, it gives you insurance and tracking. It’s a quick and trustworthy shipping option for those urgent deliveries, ensuring they deliver packages efficiently.

  • Let’s switch gears now and discuss Amazon packages. Yes, USPS does deliver Amazon packages on Sundays, and the best part is, it doesn’t cost you extra!
  • If you’re an Amazon Prime member, you get your packages delivered on weekends without paying extra, all thanks to the partnership between Amazon and USPS.

Does Standard Mail Reach You on Sundays?

Having demystified Sunday deliveries, you might be asking about your standard mail. Will that reach me on Sundays? The answer is, unfortunately, no.

USPS doesn’t deliver standard services like First-Class Mail and Retail Ground on Sundays. So, if you’re expecting a First-Class Mail on a weekend, you might have to wait until Monday.

Saturday vs. Sunday: Comparing USPS Weekend Services

With all this talk about Sunday deliveries, how does Saturday fare in the USPS delivery schedules? Here’s the lowdown:

  • USPS delivery on Saturday is pretty much like a regular weekday, offering a variety of mailing and shipping options. However, Sunday delivery is exclusive to Priority Mail Express and specific Amazon packages.
  • You can get Priority Mail and Priority Mail Express services on Saturdays without any restrictions or limitations. However, if postal carriers have a ton of mail to deliver, especially bulk mail, they might have to work longer hours on Saturdays.

How to Determine if Your Package Will Be Delivered on Sunday

Armed with knowledge about the USPS weekend delivery system, how can you figure out whether your package will arrive on Sunday? The answer lies in the magic of USPS tracking :

  • If it says the package has arrived at its final destination, the sorting facility, and is scheduled for delivery, it could be coming on Sunday.
  • When checking out, look for Sunday delivery availability in your area on the Amazon website or app.
  • Once USPS has the package, the tracking info will also show if it’s scheduled for Sunday delivery. So, keep checking your tracking info for updates on your weekend deliveries.

Metro Areas and Sunday Delivery – Is There a Difference?

If you’re living in a bustling city, you’re in luck!

  • In metro areas, there’s a better chance of having USPS Sunday delivery services due to more demand and larger populations.
  • The type of mail and the specific metropolitan area determine if USPS delivers on Sundays in big cities.
  • The size of the population affects whether USPS delivers on Sundays, with bigger populations indicating more demand and, therefore, more resources dedicated by the USPS for Sunday deliveries.

Picking Up Parcels on Sundays: Can You Access Your Mail?

What if you have a critical package incoming and you opt to collect it from the post office on Sunday? Bad news:

  • All post office locations will be closed on Sundays. This means that the public won’t have access to them. But fear not, USPS has digital tools like Informed Delivery to track your mail and packages. This way, at least you know your package is safe if it has arrived at your local post office so that it can be retrieved or delivered during regular business hours.

Navigating USPS Holiday Schedules and Sunday Deliveries

  • Holidays! A time for relaxation, family gatherings, and… mail? If you’re wondering how USPS navigates around federal holidays , you’re not alone. USPS observes federal holidays which can affect regular mail delivery.
  • But the Sunday delivery guidelines still stand, so Priority Mail Express and Amazon packages can still be delivered on Sundays, even if it’s a federal holiday.

Cost Implications of USPS Sunday Deliveries

Let’s shift our focus to the financial aspect:.

  • And no matter the starting price, there’s an extra $12.50 fee for Sunday delivery.
  • Amazon packages don’t cost extra for Sunday delivery when sent through USPS.

How to Figure Out When Your Letter Will Arrive

By shaunacy ferro | jan 25, 2023, 11:33 am est.

Consult the USPS's handy service standards map to make sure your loved one's birthday card gets there on time.

When you send a snail mail package or letter, you may not know exactly when it will arrive unless you pay for tracking. If you stick your rent check in the mail on June 27, will it reach your landlord across town before the end of the month?

There’s a handy map to tell you. While they’re not exact predictions, the United States Postal Service has what’s called “service standards,” which dictate the agency’s goals for how long it should take a piece of mail to travel from one zip code to another. The map, which depicts the USPS's service standards as of October 1, 2022, is organized by both the class of mail (first-class mail, marketing mail, etc.) and by the zip code of origin.

By consulting the map, you can figure out your mail’s travel timeline and see a rough portrait of how mail travels throughout the country . For instance, a magazine (periodicals class) originating in Portland, Oregon, should arrive in Seattle in four days, and will take five days to arrive in north-central Montana:

Map showing how long it would take a periodical to travel across the U.S.

Marketing mail sent from Portland might take as long as five days to reach Seattle:

Map showing how long it would take marketing mail to make it across the U.S.

These days, a piece of first-class mail sent from New York City will travel as far as some areas of Wisconsin and Illinois in three days and takes around five to make it all the way across the country to California:

A map showing the travel time of a first-class letter across the United States.

If you want to reach Guam, first-class mail sent from New York City will take six days, though that’s a pretty far cry from the 17 days marketing mail will take via the same route:

A map showing how long it takes a letter send via marketing/standard mail to make its way across the U.S.

Again, all these are standards, meaning they don’t necessarily reflect the reality of every mail delivery, which has gotten slower since late 2021 , when the USPS began dialing back on the use of airplanes to transport mail. But they are a good way to estimate when you can expect that postcard or check to arrive once you stick it in the mail if everything goes right.

A version of this story ran in 2017; it has been updated for 2023.

USPS Weekend Delivery Explained for Ecommerce Businesses

usps weekend delivery

The USPS delivers all Priority Mail® on Saturdays at no extra cost, as well as Priority Mail Express® packages on Sunday for an additional fee.

No matter what you sell online, you know that the pressure is on to provide the best shipping experience possible to your customers. To crush competitors in your field, you need to offer delivery options at checkout that are affordable, convenient and fast. Including an option for weekend delivery whenever you can.

Major players such as Amazon and Walmart make this sound so easy, offering free or inexpensive next-day and two-day delivery like it’s just how things are supposed to be. Even Saturdays or Sundays. And customers have bought into it. Of course, this makes things even more difficult if you’re one of the little guys.

The reality is: most retailers aren’t set-up to have this type of in-house delivery process or team. Nor the resources on hand to set it up. So what’s an ecommerce business to do if they want to over weekend delivery?

Luckily, the United States Postal Service (USPS) has recognized this growing need and offers options for the small business owner who needs to get their product to customers in a hurry without breaking the bank.

When it comes to the USPS small package delivery, you do have options for weekend delivery, even if it means paying more for it on Sundays.

If you’re looking for an economical shipping option that can reach every home and business regardless of whether they’re in a densely populated market, USPS may be a viable solution for your ecommerce business.

Why Should I Use USPS for Weekend Mail Delivery?

On the weekends, the USPS offers Saturday delivery on all Priority Mail® and priority Mail Express® packages at no additional cost. If you require Sunday delivery, this is available through Priority Mail Express for an additional fee.

Additionally, the USPS can reach every single mailing address in the U.S, an important distinction. Carriers like UPS have actually partnered with USPS in order to make the last leg of their deliveries more reliable and economical. USPS also delivers to P.O. boxes, APOs and FPOs, something else that sets them apart from their competitors.

Breakdown of USPS Carrier Services that Offer Weekend Mail Delivery

Priority Mail Express®

Does Priority Mail Express deliver on the weekend? Yes, on Saturdays.

Is Sunday delivery available for Priority Mail Express? Yes, at an additional cost and in select markets.

USPS Priority Mail Express® is the fastest service you can get with the carrier, and it’s available 365 days a year with limited exceptions. For most U.S. addresses and P.O. boxes, overnight delivery is available with a money-back guarantee. Commercial and residential services are both available.

How Much Does USPS Weekend Delivery Cost?

Saturday services are at no additional charge, while Sunday service is an additional $12.50 and is only available for Priority Mail Express®. For a complete list of all rates, check out this price list on USPS.com.

How Do I Offer USPS Weekend Mail Delivery?

In order to guarantee your product is delivered daily to customers, you’ll need to offer Priority Mail Express® to your checkout. This is the only service available that includes both Saturday and Sunday delivery. You may decide to also offer Priority Mail® as an additional option, although delivery is not available on Sundays. However, there is no additional cost for Saturday service. The most important thing is to provide your customer with options without overwhelming them. You want them to be able to quickly be able to decide whether it’s worth it to them to pay more for faster services, then purchase the item before they can be pulled away from something else. Additionally, if your customer becomes overwhelmed at too many options, they may become frustrated and try to seek your product elsewhere.

You can always test out USPS weekend mail delivery to a select group of customers, such as those located near your fulfillment locations. If more and more consumers start choosing this option, then it could be worth it to roll out to everyone. There’s no shame in testing things and iterating your shipping strategy, especially as the ecommerce landscape continues to evolve. For more assistance on custom shipping options during checkout, software like ShipperHQ can help. By providing transparent and simplified shipping options, ecommerce businesses can both drive more sales and be spared the hassle of figuring out the best shipping set-up at checkout.

Your Complete Guide to USPS Mail Delivery on Saturdays

As a home improvement expert who relies on both sending and receiving packages, I‘ve learned a lot about how USPS mail delivery works on Saturdays. Whether you‘re waiting for an important document or shipment of materials, it‘s key to understand the ins and outs of weekend delivery.

This comprehensive guide will cover everything you need to know, from standard delivery times to dealing with late or missing mail.

Overview of Saturday Delivery

While many businesses close on weekends, the United States Postal Service continues to deliver mail six days a week across the country.

According to USPS data, over 34 million mail pieces are processed and delivered by USPS employees nationally on an average Saturday. Their network handles everything from letters and bills to important packages over the weekend.

For businesses like home renovation companies that ship time-sensitive materials, Saturday delivery provides a key opportunity to move packages faster.

Below I‘ll go into more detail on typical delivery times, how Saturdays differ from weekdays, and strategies to keep your mail moving on the weekends.

Typical Saturday Delivery Hours and Times

In my experience remodeling homes in suburban neighborhoods, here are the most common delivery hours I see:

Early morning – Mail delivery starts between 7:00am and 9:00am , often earlier than weekday service.

Daytime – While hours vary, I typically receive a second batch of mail between 11:00am and 3:00pm on Saturdays.

Afternoon cutoff – The last scheduled mail delivery time falls between 3:00pm and 4:00pm in my area.

Retail hours – Local post office branches operate limited hours, usually from 9:00am to 12:00pm on Saturdays.

However, Saturday delivery times can fluctuate across the country based on population, mail volume, and postal resources.

I‘ll break down what factors influence delivery times in more detail later on. But first, let‘s look at how Saturday differs from regular weekday service.

How Saturday Delivery Differs from Weekdays

As a home renovation contractor for over 15 years, I‘ve noticed some key ways Saturday mail delivery varies from the Monday to Friday schedule:

Earlier start times – With most households at home on Saturdays, USPS starts deliveries earlier. Weekday delivery typically begins between 8:30am and 10:00am.

One attempt – If a signature is required and no one is available, the mail carrier will leave a notice and return the package to the post office for pickup. On weekdays, they attempt delivery again the next day.

Fewer deliveries – In lower-density areas, USPS may only deliver mail once per day on Saturdays compared to multiple times during the week.

No collections – While mail is delivered on Saturdays, carriers do not collect outgoing mail from USPS blue boxes as they do on weekdays.

Early office closures – Post offices and distribution centers close earlier on Saturdays, usually by noon or 1pm. Processing mail overnight for next-day delivery is limited.

Priority mail – Express mail with guaranteed delivery continues 7 days a week, though Priority Mail is not guaranteed on Saturdays.

So in summary, the overall service is more limited on weekends, but delivery times are shifted earlier to account for customers being at home.

Why Saturday Delivery Times Vary

From dense urban areas to remote rural locations, I‘ve seen a wide range of delivery schedules for Saturdays across the many USPS districts.

Some key factors that influence Saturday delivery times in local areas include:

Location type – Urban routes average 1-2 deliveries on Saturdays, while rural routes may see only one delivery attempt.

Office size – In remote areas with smaller post offices, delivery starts later and ends earlier.

Transportation – Areas farther from processing facilities see mail later based on transportation needs.

Population – Higher-density areas receive deliveries more frequently to handle larger volumes.

Staffing – Local postmaster staffing decisions drive earlier or later delivery and collection schedules.

Seasonality – Delivery may start earlier in summer when household mail volume is lower. The holidays also bring seasonal spikes in mail.

does post travel on weekends

As you can see, Saturday delivery is not one-size-fits-all across the USPS network. Connecting with your local post office is the best way to learn specifics for your neighborhood.

Utilizing Priority Mail for Saturday Delivery

When I need to ship urgent documents, products, or construction materials to a job site by the weekend, my go-to option is USPS Priority Mail Express.

Priority Mail Express provides guaranteed overnight delivery 365 days a year, including Saturdays. Key benefits include:

  • Available same-day pickup later than regular Priority Mail
  • Delivers by 9:00am for many addresses
  • Higher cost but reliable for time-sensitive documents or items
  • Can schedule next-day deliveries 6-7 days per week

USPS Priority Mail (not Express) also delivers on Saturdays, although without a delivery guarantee. It provides 1-3 day delivery windows.

FedEx Home Delivery and UPS Ground are other common choices for Saturday package deliveries. Overall, Priority Mail Express gives me confidence that rush packages will arrive by Saturday.

Tracking Packages on the Weekend

Given my high parcel volumes as a contractor, tracking shipments is a must to ensure on-time delivery seven days a week.

For USPS packages, I heavily rely on the USPS tracking feature online and through their mobile app. Some key tracking capabilities:

  • Real-time package status updates
  • Email and text alerts for expected delivery or delays
  • Scheduled delivery date adjusted for Saturday
  • Detailed transit timelines and location checks
  • Confirmation when delivered or if issues arise

Third-party sites like TrackItOnline let me track multiple carriers in one place. Proactively monitoring trackers gives me visibility when coordinating time-sensitive jobs.

What To Do If Your Mail is Late

Even with diligent tracking, occasional postal delays mean mail sometimes arrives later than expected on Saturdays.

If a parcel or letter is late, I recommend taking the following steps:

  • Allow extra time for standard delivery delays before worrying.
  • Check the tracking number for any status updates or exceptions.
  • Contact USPS to open an inquiry and see if they can intercept the item.
  • Request redelivery for an attempted signature package. They will try again Saturday.
  • Pick it up in person at your local post office branch if sorting delays are long.
  • File a missing mail search request if the issue persists over multiple days.

While waiting can be frustrating, I‘ve found USPS representatives to be very helpful in locating missing mail when delays arise.

Filing Claims for Reimbursement

If a letter or package ultimately ends up lost or damaged beyond repair, you can file a claim for reimbursement.

Based on my experience navigating USPS claims, I recommend:

  • Filing online for missing mail or damage within 60 days
  • Bringing supporting documents like receipts to your local post office
  • Checking if insurance was purchased through USPS or the shipper
  • Providing as much detail as possible to support claims
  • Following up if issues are unresolved or claims are denied

While certainly inconvenient, USPS has reasonable reimbursement policies for lost or destroyed packages when the situation calls for it.

Helpful Resources and Contacts

As a USPS power user, their online tools help me keep Saturday deliveries on track:

  • USPS Service Updates – Alerts on potential delays nationally or locally
  • USPS Mobile app – Track packages, lookup ZIP codes, store addresses
  • USPS Customer Care Center – Call 1-800-ASK-USPS (800-275-8777)
  • USPS Social media – Quick answers and updates from @USPS
  • USPS PostalPro app – Updates on latest news and resources

Getting to know my local postmaster also provides helpful insight on delivery in my neighborhood.

With the right resources, staying on top of USPS mail on Saturdays ensures smooth deliveries and happy customers every week.

Key Takeaways on Saturday Delivery

After years of hands-on experience receiving mail for remodeling jobs, here are my top tips for understanding USPS Saturday delivery:

  • Expect earlier delivery start times, usually between 7:00am and 9:00am.
  • There is often just one mail attempt versus multiple on weekdays.
  • Hours vary based on location type, population size, and transportation.
  • Priority Mail Express provides guaranteed Saturday delivery by 9am when needed.
  • Use USPS tracking tools constantly to catch delays early.
  • File claims promptly if needed, providing as many supporting details as possible.
  • Lean on great USPS resources like online alerts and their mobile app.

I hope this guide gives you a complete picture of how USPS Saturday delivery operates. Let me know if you have any other questions!

The United States Postal Service or most commonly known as USPS has always been there to provide the best service to every citizen living in America and make their lives convenient and easier. With this, USPS has made plenty of improvements and innovations in their delivery system that benefits most of its clients.

According to Wikipedia , the USPS is also known as Postal Service , U.S. Mail , and Post Office .

USPS is a reputed, independent agency of the U.S. Federal Government. It is responsible for offering postal service throughout the United States, even including its associated states and other insular areas.

You will be fascinated to read the fact that it is one of the few government agencies, which is authorized by the U.S. Constitution explicitly. The USPS dates back to the year 1775 when Benjamin Franklin was chosen as the first postmaster general in the Second Continental Congress.

However, the Post Office Department was formed only in the year 1792 during Franklin’s operation. Later, in 1872, it was elevated to a cabinet-level department.

Based on the Postal Reorganization Act (1970), the USPS (United States Postal Service) was transformed into an independent agency.

When we talk about postal service, one of the perplexing questions that come to mind is — Does USPS deliver on weekends? Most often though, Sunday is usually out of context since it is known to us that it usually serves as a rest day for most.

Yes, USPS delivers on Saturday.

Though USPS delivers on Saturdays, the delivery is subject to the service or mail class in use. Priority Mail & Priority Mail Express items might be delivered on Saturdays.

However, the delivery of first-class mail, media mail products, and standard post aren’t specified.

The USPS mainly delivers Priority Mail & Priority Mail Express items on Saturday.

The items from Priority Mail will be delivered in 1-3 business days for a starting price of $6.65. This facility can be availed both online and at any Post Office location. Like Priority Mail Express, even Priority Mail offers free package pickup at your office or home. It also incorporates a maximum insurance coverage of $50 of insurance for all types of shipments.

For complete details check the table below. If you have a package, and you want it to be delivered, there is no specific USPS delivery time it can reach your area, considering that it depends on the volume of the things they deliver from one place to another.

Once they have a few parcels to be delivered on that day, they can reach you early. However, if the USPS has a lot of things to be delivered, their delivery hours might be prolonged.

One of the things that you need to consider is that USPS delivery hours and USPS delivery time also depend on:

  • The location of the USPS warehouse
  • The place where they store your mail and packages before delivering them to your assigned address.

USPS Saturday delivery hours are also the same.

What are USPS Delivery Hours on Saturday?

The delivery time of USPS during Saturdays depends on multiple factors such as:

  • The volume of the mail
  • The distance between the warehouse and the destination

For letter carriers, there isn’t any difference between Saturday and a normal day. A letter carrier doesn’t leave his or her way unfinished willingly. They have to deliver everything.

If the number of emails to be delivered is less, they might reach you earlier than expected. But if they have bulk mails, then the delivery hours of USPS might be prolonged.

Does USPS Deliver On Sunday?

Yes, USPS delivers on Sunday too. But the thing is that it delivers only Amazon Packages and Priority Mail Packages on this day.

After the 2013’s deal between Amazon and the USPS, Amazon packages are being shipped by the USPS.

According to uspsoig.gov , Postal Regulatory Commission has agreed to a service, e-tailing Amazon.com. They will use the Parcel service to deliver everything even on Sundays. According to the deal, it started delivering Amazon packages to Los Angeles, New York, and other metropolitan areas like Dallas, New Orleans, Houston, and Phoenix.

The postal service already lost $52 billion since 2007 and continued to do so if certain reforms weren’t taken. Two of the proposed ways to prevent USPS from collapsing is to stop USPS Saturday delivery since it just adds up to the cost, as well as closing unneeded post office locations that only have very few clienteles.

However, congress blocked such recommendations, which gives continuing life to USPS delivery days to stay even including their services during weekends. But then again, is it the right move?

Won’t USPS collapse if their finances continue to rise and their income can barely fend for their needs? If that will be the case, one solution that we can highly think of is to privatize USPS or perhaps to open the competition in postal markets.

Though there are still people who are using the services of postal service, we cannot erase the fact that it is becoming obsolete as the internet continues to grow and makes communication easier and faster.

Should the US follow the lead of Germany and the Netherlands who already privatized their national postal services some decades ago?

If yes, then there is a possibility that we can save our postal system. If they do not want to privatize it though, we can still opt to open up some competitions as done by Sweden and New Zealand.

These reformed changes made the postal systems of these countries live more years and there was an improvement seen on services and efficiencies offered by these companies to the postal services which benefited productivity and consumers as well.

What is USPS Delivery Hours on Sunday?

Priority Mail Express comes with a money-back guarantee. It is the quickest domestic service, which is available throughout the year and can reach any address in the United States, even including PO boxes.

So, delivering on Sundays isn’t a new concept. What matters is the cost of the Amazon delivery.

The advantage of it being accessible for an extremely low cost or at least, affordable gives a customer a reason to proceed with it.

The price starts at $23.75 at different Post Office locations as well as online.

When compared to other delivery services, it is far cheaper. Especially with delivery features and promises.

Sunday deliveries are for all Amazon customers. But if a customer happens to be an Amazon Prime member, then he or she can place an order even on Fridays and can receive his or her delivery by Sunday.

On the other hand, if you use Priority Mail Express, then USPS guarantees overnight delivery. It can reach its destination by 10:30 am.

However, keep in mind that the delivery time might vary based on the location and volume of the mail.

So, Does USPS Deliver On Weekends?

Yes, it delivers on weekends. However, USPS delivery days that include the weekend is solely dependent on the mail service that you will be using, as some mail types do not offer weekend delivery.

Can You Pick Up Packages From USPS?

USPS (United States Postal Service) is one of the best mail services in the US, which was established in the 1970s. US Mail , as most would call it, is geared for the establishment of an office that operates in receiving and dispatching letters to receive, send, and deliver the letters and packages at certain prices.

Besides being the third-largest employer for civilians in the United States, it has already made its name in the postal operations for 45 years and counting. However, with regular usage, consumers have many doubts about it. Say for example, can someone pick up packages from USPS?

Yes, you can pick up packages from USPS before the scheduled delivery time but only if the reason for an early pickup (by you) is valid.

Just call USPS customer support to assist you. However, the P.O. will need the tracking number. Also, according to the USPS Package Intercept Program , one can redirect his/her undelivered or unreleased domestic shipment for delivery. It is available for letters, flats, and packages with additional services barcodes or tracking.

Since its USPS’s job to deliver the packages and mails on time to the destined location, there are times when consumers might want them before the scheduled delivery date or time. You can pick up the package from USPS if you have the tracking number ready and the following exceptions:

1. The Need Is Urgent

If you have an urgent situation that cannot be ignored (for example you are leaving the city), and you need the mail or package soon, you can call USPS customer service for help. There are instances where they let customers pick up their packages or mails but only if the reason is valid. Carriers might take days to reach your home. So at such times, it is better to cancel the home delivery and get the package yourself from the post office.

2. Missed USPS

If you have signed up for home delivery, then it is expected that a signature of the receiver is required upon delivery. If the case is not so, you can have someone receive your package when you are not around.

But it is an automatic act that the delivery boy or postman will ask for authorization from the receiver, already signed by you, or maybe a prior authorization from the office in some cases. However, if the situation does not agree with the first two scenarios, the carrier may bring back or leave your package at the nearest post office. By then, they may allow you to pick up the package given that you bring your slip and a valid identification card or ID for security purposes.

3. Hold Upon Request

USPS Package Intercept program offers a feature called Hold Upon Request , which is exclusively designed for people who wish to pick up their package the other way around. This means that this time, you are the sender, and you have your package lost, or you have your item not yet released or delivered, and you want to get it back.

At such times, you should submit a request for this type of amenity with an input of the sender’s address. However, there is a payment required. Take note that this fee will be non-refundable.

Tips On USPS Packages

So, how about preventing some complications with your packages? Well, it could save you from the hassles mentioned above of pickups. Of course, those cannot be avoided, especially on emergency matters. But for toxic customers, here are some tips to keep you from mailing troubles.

  • You can send your mail by either scheduling for a pickup, taking your mail to a Post Office, leaving it in your mailbox at home, or by dropping the mail into a blue collection box.
  • Take your item to the retail counter of the Post Office if it weighs more than 13 ounces. Make sure that you affix your postage stamps.
  • When scheduling a pickup, first, submit your request online and have your items ready before the specific carrier arrives.
  • When putting a hold on your mail, first have yourself fill out a Hold Mail form from the Post Office. Remember that for the postal service to hold your item for 30 days, visit USPS online or call customer services for more information. You can pick up your mail from the Office or have your mail in-home delivered.
  • For people who are always on the move, remember to update your shipping address every time you go out for a home transfer. There is a permanent address change or a shipping address alteration for the temporary address. To save you from hassle, you may go online for a minor fee. Notify your local office of your move a month before. This will assure that your mail service will not be interrupted. In cases of priority mail, priority mail express, and first-class mail, they will be forwarded to you at no cost for a year. For the newspapers and magazines, however, they will be forwarded for a total of 60 days.
  • When printing postage stamps, you can have it in a moment by doing it online so you don’t need to carry yourself to the local office.
  • Your signature is as important as your mail. You acknowledge the received items through your signature. Keep in mind that the postal service ends its liability to you when you do so. Upon receiving, you may confirm the sender’s information such as the name and address for security purposes.

Amazon & USPS: Latest News and Updates

As per the recent news from CNBC , the USPS has proposed to increase their fees between 9% and 12% from what they are charging Amazon.

The Parcel Select Service, which is also used by FedEx & UPS (United Parcel Service), is the most highly-priced program.

The USPS has proposed a 9.3% increase in their service, especially for packages that weigh more than 1 pound, and a 12.3% increase for lighter packages.

This proposal was a few days after President Donald Trump tweeted about Amazon.

In April, Trump issued an order to set up a special task force to inspect the USPS, saying that it was on an “unmaintainable financial path.” He also tweeted saying that USPS is the new Amazon’s “delivery boy” and does not make money from their business.

Donald Trump slammed Amazon by tweeting:

“I have stated my concerns with Amazon long before the Election. Unlike others, they pay little or no taxes to state & local governments, use our Postal System as their Delivery Boy (causing tremendous loss to the U.S.), and are putting many thousands of retailers out of business!”

However, to this, a USPS spokesperson said:

“The price increases reflect the best judgment of the Postal Service Governors, who are seeking to establish new rates that will keep the Postal Service competitive, while also providing the Postal Service with much-needed revenue.”

The USPS proposed a 3.9% increase on priority mail express packages, a 10% increase on the first-class stamps, and a 5.9% increase on priority mail.

According to a business insider , USPS has reported a total loss of $2.7 billion in 2017 on revenue of $69.6 billion. Raising the charges on packages is an effective way to fix this problem. And since Amazon is one of the biggest customers of USPS, this could be a great movie but this would also cost the big e-commerce giant a lot.

Besides Amazon, even companies like UPS & FedEx will be blown from such high costs.

The domestic mail and shipping services offered by the USPS include:

1. Priority Mail

Depending on the package, the source it starts, and the destination it reaches, the shipping time ranges from 1 to 3 days. The option of Priority Mail Flat Rate eliminates the need to weigh packages up to 70 lbs. The price starts from $7.35 and is available both online and at all Post Office locations.

If your package or mail is above 13 ounces , and you need a fast delivery at a reasonable price, then Priority Mail is the best option.

  • Shipping time is 1 – 3 days
  • Package pickup is free
  • Includes USPS Tracking
  • Includes maximum insurance of $50
  • No surcharges on fuel
  • Usual Saturday delivery

Priority Mail: Flat Rates

Restrictions:

  • The maximum weight of the package should be 70 lbs.
  • The maximum combined girth and length should be 108 inches.
  • While sealing a flat rate box or envelope, the flaps of the container should close the usual folds.

2. Priority Mail Express

This is USPS’s one of the fastest domestic services with limited exceptions. It is available 365 days and comes with a money-back guarantee. It delivers to all U.S. addresses, even including PO Boxes. The price begins at $25.5 at both online and all Post Office locations. The option of Flat Rate eliminates the need to weigh packages up to 70 lbs.

If you want your package to be delivered very quickly (overnight) and the price is not an issue, then Priority Mail Express is the ideal option.

  • Free pickup for packages – either at your office or home
  • Includes digital signature for record and USPS tracking
  • Has an insurance coverage of $100
  • Overnight delivery on holidays and Sundays but for an additional fee

Priority Mail Express: Flat Rates

3. First Class Mail

First-Class Mail is one of the most affordable mail services of USPS. It is an affordable and effective way to send lightweight packages and envelopes. On the other hand, the First-Class Mail Forever stamps are currently sold at 1 oz. but do not expire even if their price rise.

If your package or mail is 13 ounces or lesser, and you don’t need overnight delivery, First Class Mail is the ideal option.

It is great for:

  • Single-piece, standard-sized envelopes that weigh up to 3.5 oz.
  • Big envelopes
  • Small packages that weigh up to 13 oz.

It delivers the package in 3 working days. The price starts at $0.55.

  • Rates are not affected due to distance.
  • No home delivery or fuel surcharges.
  • Fast and inexpensive for lightweight packages.
  • Delivers in 1 – 3 working days
  • Covers insurance of $5000 (merchandise only)
  • Maximum 13 oz.
  • Up to 3.5 ounce of package weight is free for cards and letters

Stamp Prices:

  • Rectangular postcard – standard-sized stamps begin at $0.35
  • Oversized postcards require letter stamps. They start at price $0.55
  • Rectangular envelope – standard-sized stamps begin at $0.55
  • Unusual shape, oversized, square envelope stamps begin at $0.70
  • The maximum weight of the first-class mail letters should be 3.5 oz.
  • The maximum weight of big first class mail packages and envelopes should be 13 oz.
  • All envelopes and postcards should be rectangular. Else, an extra charge might apply.

4. Media Mail

This option is only for videos, books, records, and CDs. However, there are a few restrictions in Media Mail. The item can be in a nice, padded envelope but not in an ordinary, plain envelope with extra padding.

Also, you cannot bubble wrap a book in a manila envelope. If you are using a box, there should only be books without additional padding. You cannot send anything that has advertisements on it (e.g. magazines and newspapers). All the packages of Media Mail are subject to inspection.

This means that the USPS has complete rights to open and check them. If you happen to ship magazines or newspapers via Media Mail, it will be returned as a Postage Due.

Media Mail is a cheap option for education materials but can be slow because the USPS works on the “Space Available” approach.

This means that all the other mail types go on the transportation first and only if there is a space, Media Mails are allowed. If there is no space, the package has to wait.

Media Mail is great for sending educational materials like books and DVDs at low shipping rates for not-so-quick deliveries. The price at the post office starts at $2.75.

  • The cheapest option for any item that is over 13 ounces.
  • Maximum weight of the package is 70 lbs.
  • Price is based on the weight and not distance.
  • Delivers in 2 – 8 working days

What can you send with Media Mail?

  • Test materials and printed music
  • Printed educational charts
  • Computer-readable media
  • Video & sound recordings
  • Books (minimum 8 pages)
  • Loose-leaf medical pages & binders

Note: Computer drives, digital drives, and video games don’t qualify for Media Mail.

5. USPS Retail Ground

This is economical and reliable ground shipping for oversized packages. It is good if your package doesn’t need to be delivered that quickly. It is available for shipments that weigh 70 lbs or less.

If the package doesn’t fit the Priority Mail requirements and is “oversized,” then consider the Retail Ground mail class.

  • Packages can be a maximum of 70 lbs and 130 inches in both length & girth
  • Free USPS tracking
  • Delivers in 2-8 business days
  • Available only at USPS post offices
  • Great fir packages that are considered big for Priority Mail delivery and Priority Mail Express.
  • It is available only for shipments that weigh a maximum of 70 lbs and 130 inches (length & girth combined).
  • Lightweight, large packages are subject to oversized pricing.

Does USPS Deliver On Saturday and Sunday? The USPS and Amazon Deal Explained

Does USPS Deliver On Saturday and Sunday? And weekends

Shipment can either positively or adversely impact your Amazon business and your customers’ experience. One of the most important factors for 73.6% of shoppers when it comes to their overall shopping experience is shipping. A poor shipping experience can make 83.5% of shoppers unlikely to shop with a brand again. For Amazon sellers, late shipments can spell negative consequences, such as losing customers and getting negative feedback or low ratings, which affect your seller account metrics. Late shipments can also affect the seller’s reputation and may even lead to penalties or account suspension.

Whether you’re using Amazon FBA or doing the shipping yourself, the United States Postal Service (USPS) can help you deliver your parcels on time. So, does the USPS deliver on the weekends, specifically on Saturday and Sunday? This article takes a closer look at USPS delivery schedules for the weekends and how you can make the most out of its services.

What Is the USPS?

what is the usps

A Brief History of the USPS

The United States Postal Office is the only delivery service in the US that’s known to reach every address in the country. That’s 160 million addresses (residential and business) and Post Office Boxes. Founded in 1775, the US Postal Office became the Post Office Department through The Post Office Act of 1792. Here’s a fun fact: Benjamin Franklin was appointed the first Postmaster General in 1775. The Congress replaced The Post Office Department with the United States Postal Service (USPS) in 1971.

The USPS Today

As a non-military government institution, the USPS has the country’s largest physical and logistical infrastructure, allowing it to continue providing support and services for communication and digital commerce throughout the United States. The USPS is a self-funding agency that receives no tax dollars for its operations. Instead, it relies on selling its products, services, and postage to generate funding for postal operations. With more than 33,000 offices nationwide, it’s also considered to be the nation’s largest retail network , even outnumbering Dollar General, Starbucks, and McDonalds.

Some of you might be wondering if the United States Postal Service, also known as the Postal Service or Post Office, is a business or a public service. It’s actually both.

While it started as a public service , back when it was still the Post Office Department, the USPS became a business at the start of the 1970s. This was around the time when the USPS started relying on the sale of various products and services to fund its operations because it stopped receiving taxpayer money. As an entity that combines elements of a business and a public service, the USPS delivers to remote places that private carriers don’t deliver to because of the lack of profitability.

Other USPS Delivery Services

domestic mail and shipping services

The USPS offers several options for its domestic mail and shipping services. These options allow you to choose a service based on factors like delivery speed, price, and online shipping vs. shipping to a Post Office location. These services include:

  • Priority Mail Express: Ideal for sending urgent packages with a delivery speed that ranges from next-day to two days. PME services start from $28.75.
  • Priority Mail: Ideal for sending packages that need to arrive within 1-3 business days. Prices vary depending the size and type of the envelope or box you’re sending.
  • USPS Ground Advantage: An affordable shipping option for packages weighing up to 70 lbs. within 2-5 business days, including hazardous materials (HAZMAT) that can’t be shipped by air. Prices start at $4.75.
  • Media Mail: This is another affordable option for sending books, media, and educational materials. Note that only certain types of media qualify for this service. Otherwise, you or the recipient may be required to pay higher postage rates. Pricing starts at $3.92. Want to know if what you’re about to send is eligible for Media Mail? You can check out the complete list of eligible media types here .
  • First-Class Mail: This option is suitable for standard-sized, single-piece envelopes and has a delivery speed of 1-5 business days. As of writing, First-Class Mail pricing starts at $0.66.

The USPS also offers international mail and shipping services. Keep in mind that several factors can affect delivery speeds and costs. These include:

  • Package weight and size
  • Distance traveled (sender to recipient)
  • Type of USPS mail and shipping service used
  • Weather conditions
  • USPS holidays , such as Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve
  • Staffing fluctuations
  • Carrier route changes

The USPS has a Retail Postage Price Calculator that you can use to estimate delivery prices. You can also track your package via the USPS Tracking page using the tracking number found on your mailing label or receipt.

Does USPS Deliver Packages on Saturday?

The USPS’ Saturday and Sunday deliveries, particularly Priority Mail and Priority Mail Express, incorporate insurance coverage ranging from $50 to $100. In case you need extra insurance, you can purchase additional coverage at a per-pound rate from the USPS.

other usps delivery services

The USPS does deliver on Saturday, as it counts as a normal delivery day.

However, it follows limited hours on Saturdays and deliveries should be completed by 5 p.m. (local time). Furthermore, local delivery times will depend on your location. USPS delivers the following types of mail or packages on Saturdays:

  • USPS First Class Mail
  • USPS Retail Ground
  • First-Class Package
  • Priority Mail Express

Note that of these types, Priority Mail and Priority Mail Express are mainly delivered on Saturdays. Meanwhile, the rest of the services don’t have a specified delivery time on Saturdays. There are also several factors that could affect delivery times on Saturdays. These may include the volume of mail that needs to be delivered, the distance between a USPS warehouse and the recipient’s location, and the USPS service you’re using. If you want your items delivered within 1-3 business days, including Saturdays, you must choose either Priority Mail or Priority Mail Express.

Delivery times on Saturdays will also largely depend on your chosen USPS mail service. If you want your customers to receive their packages even on a Saturday, then you still need to choose either Priority Mail or Priority Mail Express.

Does USPS Deliver on Sunday?

Because of the growing demand for regular deliveries, the USPS offers mail delivery services on weekends.

While the USPS does deliveries on Sunday, it only delivers Priority Mail Express items and certain Amazon parcels. For Sunday deliveries, recipients can expect to receive the following types of packages:

  • Priority Mail packages
  • First-Class packages (applicable to Sunday Holidays )
  • Packages serviced by Amazon Sunday deliveries

Sunday deliveries will depend on the volume levels of packages. The USPS doesn’t charge extra for packages delivered on Sunday unless customers opt for an expedited service.

USPS Sunday Delivery Hours

As an Amazon seller, if you use Priority Mail Express for your packages, you can expect them to arrive at the recipient’s address by 10:30 a.m. The latest delivery time for Sunday deliveries Is around 6:30 p.m. In case the recipient doesn’t get their package by 6:30 p.m. on a Sunday, then they’re eligible for a full refund.

Delivery times for Amazon shipments can still vary and run anywhere from 8:00 p.m. up to 10:00 p.m. Note that delivery times can still be affected by factors like the recipient’s location and mail volume.

Picking Up Packages from the USPS

Customers can also opt to get their packages directly from the USPS, but they will need to pick up their items before their intended delivery times. They must also have a valid reason for doing so. Below, we’re sharing some of the reasons why customers may choose to pick up their packages instead of having them delivered:

  • An urgent need for the item. The customer has to cancel the home delivery schedule and go to their local post office to pick up their item. To do so, the recipient must prepare their package’s tracking number and contact USPS customer support.
  • The customer missed the delivery schedule or didn’t have anyone else to receive the package on their behalf. If someone else receives your mail, it’s best to prepare a signed authorization letter. In some cases, the carrier may leave the package at your local post office.
  • The recipient used the USPS Hold Mail request service . With this service, the USPS will hold all mail, including letters and packages, for individuals at an eligible address or their authorized representative. The recipient can place their mail on hold for up to 30 days, with a minimum holding period of three days.

Leaving Packages at the Post Office

Depending on your Post Office station, sellers can leave their packages before 5:00 p.m. or 6:00 p.m. You can also choose to have your package picked up to ensure that it’s dispatched immediately, especially for mail or packages using the overnight service.

Amazon and USPS’ Negotiated Service Agreement (NSA)

Due to its partnership with Amazon in 2013, the USPS started shipping Amazon packages even on Sundays. This has made it more convenient for both Amazon sellers and shoppers to send and receive their parcels even on weekends.

USPS carriers use the Postal Service’s Dynamic Routing Tool (DRT) to create efficient routes and deliver Amazon Sunday parcels to multiple ZIP codes. At the end of April 2014, the USPS Office of Inspector General, reports that the Sunday service was operating at more than 400 Postal Service hubs in 22 districts, delivering over 2.7 million parcels on Sundays from January to April 2014.

A few months ago, it was announced on the Amazon Seller Central seller forum that Amazon is working to bring the USPS Ground Advantage shipping service to sellers through the Amazon Buy Shipping program. USPS Ground Advantage consolidates several current shipping methods, including:

  • First-Class package service
  • Parcel Select ground shipping method
  • Parcel Select Cubic shipping method

Once this service is enabled, sellers can choose from the following shipping methods:

USPS Ground Advantage Light

Ideal for packages that weigh less than 1 lb.

USPS Ground Advantage Heavy

Recommended for packages that weigh between 1 lb. and 70 lbs.

USPS Ground Advantage Cubic

Pricing for this option will depend on factors such as package size and distance instead of package weight. Once these new shipping methods are launched, sellers can purchase labels through Amazon Buy Shipping. Furthermore, existing shipping methods for Amazon sellers will be automatically updated to their equivalent USPS Ground Advantage shipping method. While these services aren’t live yet, sellers can continue using the USPS shipping services that are currently available.

Additionally, Amazon introduced a new workflow called Send to Amazon in 2022. This new shipment creation workflow is intended to help FBA selling partners save time when it comes to creating shipments and replenishing their FBA inventories. Other benefits of using this new workflow include being able to save and reuse shipment details (case pack templates), FBA sellers having the ability to pack single-SKU and mixed-SKU boxes prior to creating shipments, and being able to select the best option to ship their products .

How to Access USPS Weekend Delivery Services

The USPS weekend mail delivery services are capable of serving every mailing address in the country. To access the USPS weekend delivery services, you first need to create a USPS account.

Once your account is live, you need to fill out a form to specify shipment details and check shipping costs and dates. Then, you need to select the type of service you’ll be using, which should either be Priority Mail or Priority Mail Express, for the package to be delivered on Saturday or Sunday.

Once done, pay for postage, schedule the package pickup from your home or business address, and place the shipping labels on your packages. For sellers with no printer for shipping labels, the USPS offers a Label Broker service. Through this, sellers can get their shipping labels delivered to their address for a fee or have them printed out at their local Post Office station.

Shipping Best Practices for Amazon Sellers

As we’ve previously mentioned, there are many factors that affect delivery times. We’re sharing some actionable tips below to help facilitate more seamless deliveries for Amazon packages with USPS.

  • Choose an eCommerce fulfillment model that matches your business’ unique needs. Amazon sellers have several fulfillment options, including in-house fulfillment, third-party fulfillment, and Fulfillment by Amazon. You can also opt for multi-channel fulfillment if you’re using other eCommerce channels aside from Amazon, such as your own website or social media accounts. Additionally, Amazon allows dropshipping, provided that you meet Amazon’s dropshipping policy.
  • Stay on top of common fulfillment issues like putting the wrong label on packages or using improper packaging for your items by using an eCommerce fulfillment service like Amazon FBA .
  • Prioritize Amazon Prime orders, especially if you’re under the Seller-Fulfilled Prime (SFP) program due to its narrow turnaround times.
  • Personalize your service by including product recommendations in your customer communications or packing slips.
  • For packages that are under 1 lb., you may want to go with the USPS First-Class package service, which is a more cost-effective option.
  • Ensure that each box has the correct shipping label. Additionally, place your shipping labels on easily visible and scannable locations.
  • To protect your items, you can use various forms of dunnage accepted by Amazon, which include foam, air pillows, bubble wrap, and full sheets of paper. Note that Amazon doesn’t allow the use of packing materials like Styrofoam peanuts (including their biodegradable and cornstarch-derived counterparts), crinkle wrap, and shredded paper.
  • Make sure to schedule your delivery appointments early, ideally no less than 24 hours before the intended delivery date.
  • Refrain from attaching shipment labels to the seams of boxes as they can get damaged, making them unscannable.
  • Include proper warning labels, which should be placed in easily visible locations, for packages that are heavier than 15 kg.
  • Avoid combining items from different shipments in one package. Amazon recommends that the shipment quantities reflected in your Shipping Queue must match item quantities.

Amazon offers guaranteed delivery for eligible products and for certain delivery speeds. In the event that a package isn’t delivered by the guaranteed delivery date, Amazon will refund the shipping fees associated with that particular order.

Additional Package Fees:

Dimensional (DIM) weight rates apply to large, lightweight packages. If your package is larger than 1 cubic foot (1,728 cubic inches):

  • Multiply Length x Width x Height and divide by 166 to get the DIM weight in pounds.
  • If the DIM weight is greater than the actual package weight, you’ll need to pay the DIM weight price.

Example: You have a package that is 16” x 12” x 10” and weighs 5 lbs.

  • Multiply length x width x height to get the volume of 1,920 cubic inches. That’s larger than 1 cubic foot (1,728 cubic inches), so you must divide by 166 to find its DIM weight: 1,920 divided by 166 equals 11.56, which rounds up to 12 lbs.
  • The DIM weight of 12 lbs is greater than the actual package weight of 5 lbs. You must pay the postage as if the package actually weighs 12 lbs.

If you omit or give inaccurate dimensions and/or don’t pay the DIM weight rate (when it applies), you’ll pay a dimension-noncompliance fee of $1.50.

  • For ground shipping via USPS Ground Advantage, you’ll pay more if your package measures:
  • Between 22 and 30 inches long: add $4.00
  • More than 30 inches long: add $8.40
  • More than 2 cubic feet (3,456 cubic inches): add $18.00
  • For expedited shipping (via Priority Mail Express or Priority Mail), you’ll pay more if your package measures:
  • More than 30 inches long: add $18.00
  • More than 2 cubic feet (3,456 cubic inches): add $30.00

For business shippers using Parcel Select® service, learn more about how to measure your package and what fees may apply .

TIP: Use the USPS ® Price Calculator tool to calculate your domestic postage costs. You'll need to know your package’s weight, shape, and size measurements.

Is the Post Office Open on Saturday?

Yes, many USPS post offices are open on Saturdays, though not all locations offer weekend services. It’s essential to check first, as Saturday hours are often shorter and can vary by location. • Limited service hours: Post office Saturday hours are often reduced, meaning they may open later and close earlier compared to regular weekday hours.
  • Location-specific schedules: Saturday operations can vary significantly between locations. Some smaller post offices may remain closed.
How To Find Your Local Post Office’s Saturday Hours To determine the Saturday operating hours of your local post office branch, you can do the following: Use the USPS Locator: The USPS website offers a Locator tool where you can input your ZIP code to find nearby post offices and their hours of operation. Check local listings: Often, local listings or a quick phone call to your nearest post office can provide accurate Saturday hour information.

Post Office Weekend Hours

  • Sundays are generally closed: The majority of post offices are closed on Sundays, with few exceptions in high-demand areas.

Whether you’re sending a last-minute package or need postal services for other reasons, understanding post office hours, particularly on Saturdays, is crucial. Always consider checking the specific hours of your local post office for Saturday operations to ensure a successful and timely visit. Remember, while many post offices do open on Saturdays, their hours are often abbreviated and can differ from location to location.

This blog answers several questions: does mail run on Sunday, can you receive Amazon deliveries, etc.? Thus, you can schedule your mailings accordingly without problems!

Let us dive into it!

Does USPS Deliver on Sundays?

Getting a mail item on Sundays is like hitting a goal in the dark. It depends on several factors, like the destination, mailing time, USPS service, etc.

So, the answer to does mail come on Sunday is: yes and no!

The Post Office treats all mailpieces differently, causing a change in delivery times. Hence, if you wonder why your neighbors get their mailpieces over the weekend and you don’t, here is how it works.

You cannot receive regular mail items via USPS deliver on Sunday. Regular mail includes First-Class Mail , Marketing Mail , Library Mail , etc. Thus, you cannot expect to get magazines, marketing postcards, or First-Class envelopes on this day!

Businesses must plan their marketing and transactional mailings accordingly to avoid issues. They should know things, like—does the mail run Sunday in their locality? Otherwise, they could end up with delivery delays, resulting in financial losses.

Also, not considering these factors may lead to a tarnished reputation and unsatisfied customers. Thus, try calling the Post Office in advance and asking- does mail come on Sundays to confirm if your customers can get their items on time.

If not, ask them- is USPS open on Sunday for picking up mailpieces? Probably, you can find a solution or inform your customers about the mailing schedule.

However, you must follow a drop-off time frame if you need USPS to deliver your items on time. For example, you cannot lodge a mailpiece late on Friday and ask the Post Office to complete delivery the next day . There are specific cut-off times you should know for each mailing class.

So, try mailing early during the week if you want to deal with the question- does mail deliver on Sunday? It lets you commit weekend deliveries to your customers and process time-sensitive orders.

Also, consider the origin and destination of your mailpieces! Sometimes, Priority Mail deliveries to rural areas take longer than you anticipate. Factors like weather conditions, traffic, and road accidents, may also block delivery routes and stop the postal workers from offering mail delivery on Sunday.

It is always better to ask USPS- does the mail come on Sunday to rural neighborhoods? Sometimes, postal workers can help you ship more systematically to ensure your items reach the destination on a specific date.

Try selecting the Priority Mail Express option at all times to get a sure-shot answer to “does mail come on Sunday.” Often, Priority Mail deliveries take a little longer and arrive on Monday mornings instead of the weekend. But, take care of lodging items latest by Friday morning, irrespective of whether you select Priority Mail or the express option to increase your odds.

The Priority Mail Express rates start at $26.95 when you purchase it offline at the Post Office. Commercial Base and Plus users get a discount of $3.45 at the price of $23.50.

Other options include Priority Mail Express Flat Rate Envelope , Priority Mail Regional Rate Boxes, etc. Thus, all you need to do is learn- is the USPS open on Sundays, to unlock a ton of mailing services?

Table of Contents

Does USPS Deliver Mail and Packages on Sunday?

USPS is always working towards improving its offering to U.S citizens. As such, they’ve recognized the need for regular deliveries and end deliveries. However, not all types of Mail are delivered on weekends; you’ll usually find USPS delivering Priority Mail Express, also known as the USPS Overnight, and some Amazon packages.

Even though USPS might deliver some of your items on Sundays, do not expect your local post office to deliver ordinary first-class Mail on weekends. Typically, you must wait till Monday before receiving that type of Mail. However, if you’re residing in an area with a high number of Mail, the post office might decide to offer regular mail delivery on Sundays. It would help if you understood that USPS is always trying their best to ensure Mail is flowing and there’s as limited a backlog as possible – that’s why local post offices made decisions on whether to deliver Mail on Sundays or not. Therefore, whether you’ll receive your Mail on a Sunday depends on the type of Mail, location, and the Mail flow in your local post office.

Does USPS Priority Mail Express Deliver on Sunday?

As stated above, USPS Priority Mail Express is one of the types of Mail delivered on Sundays on the condition that you shipped it overnight. Wondering why Priority Mail Express got delivered on Sundays? That’s because they’re sent through Amazon!

Priority Mail Express is undoubtedly the fastest way to ship your packages via USPS. However, you should note that it starts at $26 and charges added fee for weekend deliveries.

A Quick reminder – Priority Mail Express isn’t the same as Priority Mail; the latter isn’t delivered on Weekends. The main difference between the two is their cost and shipping time. The former is an overnight delivery, while the latter ships within 1-3 days. Therefore, we can say that Priority Mail Express was designed to offer a faster mail delivery option to customers.

Unlike Priority Mail, USPS Overnight (Priority Mail Express) includes insurance and tracking. Also, there’s a money-back guarantee if you don’t receive your Mail after 6:30 pm on the expected delivery date. This service is offered to commercial and residential customers, and Priority Mail Express International offers fast shipping within 3-5 business days to over 190 countries across the globe.

Does USPS Deliver First Class Packages on Sunday?

Unfortunately, USPS doesn’t deliver First Class mail and Packages on Sunday. The first class mail includes regular Mail like letters, bills, and other stamped mail that don’t need to be treated as an emergency.

Generally, USPS designed the first class mail category for items that aren’t to be delivered in a rush. That’s why it’s a non-economy option that delivers within 3 business days. For this reason, First Class mail isn’t considered a priority to be delivered on Sundays.

Does USPS Deliver Retail Ground Mail on Sunday?

No. USPS doesn’t deliver Retail Ground Mail on Sunday.  This type of Mail is typically used for single-piece Mail and can be any mailing material that doesn’t have to be mailed as priority or first class mail; as such, it is mainly used for shipping merchandise and gifts.  The retail ground is the most economical mailing option with USPS, with prices starting from $8.50 and a delivery period between 2-5 business days.

Does USPS Deliver Amazon Packages on Sunday?

Amazon signed a deal with USPS in 2013, and in 2021, the retail giant decided to extend delivery to its customers to 7 days a week. To enjoy weekend deliveries, you don’t need to pay $79 to be an Amazon Prime member. Today, all Amazon customers within the U.S can get Sunday deliveries. This is nothing short of good news to Amazon avid shoppers!

The latest time that USPS guarantees is by 6:30 pm ; if you didn’t receive your Mail by then, you could file for a full refund.

However, if you’re expecting a package from Amazon, it can be delivered as late as 8, 9, or even 10 pm. However, USPS tries to deliver these Mail as early as possible, and you will likely receive your Mail by noon. If you’re an Amazon Prime Member, you can order products on Friday and get your packages delivered on Saturday or Sunday.

What kind of Packages can I Expect to Receive on Sundays?

Decisions to deliver on Sunday take place at the local level- it’s totally up to your local post office to decide whether they’ll deliver on Sunday and the types of packages to be delivered. However, when there’s a high volume of Mail and the post office fears a backlog, they can decide to deliver all types of packages during weekends, especially during holidays and peak seasons.  Otherwise, the only packages you can receive on Sundays are Priority Mail Express and Amazon Packages.

But what if you’re shipping an Amazon Package through USPS? Luckily, the retail giant allows its millions of shoppers to pay the standard delivery price even on Sundays.

What time does USPS start delivering on Sundays?

USPS starts delivering Priority Mail Express on Sunday at 10:30 in the morning. As said earlier, Priority Mail are the fastest and most guaranteed USPS delivery option. You can even request a full refund if the package doesn’t arrive by 6:30 pm on the expected date.

Amazon Packages, on the other hand, are usually delivered at noon; during peak seasons or when there are a lot of Mail flowing, the delivery might be delayed up to 10 pm.

Since local post offices decide to deliver on Sundays at the low level, you can’t say if USPS Sunday package delivery is taking place in your location. However, if you’re residing in a busy city where a lot of Mail comes in and goes out, your local post office will likely offer the service. Also, you’re likely to receive those packages on Sundays during peak seasons or holidays. Other than these, you can contact your post office to clarify whether they offer Sunday delivery or not.

Why does USPS not deliver on Sunday(special cases)?

Sundays are generally off days for all workers in the United States, and USPS staff aren’t an exception. However, USPS isn’t completely off on Sundays; what they don’t deliver standard mail like letters, magazines, newspapers, bills, and other mail that aren’t needed urgently. That isn’t bad at all! Let the mailman have some rest too.

How much does USPS Sunday delivery cost?

The USPS delivery cost on Sunday depends on your package. The typical cost of shipping a Priority Mail Express starts at $26.75 without including the Sunday Delivery fees. If your package is delivered on a Sunday, you’ll have to pay an extra $12.50 fee. You’ll be charged around $40 to deliver your Priority Mail Express on a Sunday. However, you’ll pay the standard shipping fee if it’s an Amazon package.

Does USPS deliver on Saturday?

Saturday is a typical day for USPS, just like Monday to Friday. This means that almost all types of USPS delivery options, including – first-class Mail, retail ground Mail, Priority Mail, Priority Mail Express, First Class Package, and others offer Saturday deliveries. Mail carriers generally deliver packages between 9 am – 5 am on Saturdays,s, regardless of the type of delivery service used. However, most packages are delivered around 2 pm except during peak seasons when deliveries can be as late as 6:30 pm.

Priority Mail Express is the only delivery service that allows you to choose Saturday as your expected delivery date. And like in Sunday deliveries, if you didn’t receive your overnight packages by 6:30 pm on Saturday, USPS will offer you a full refund.

If you use other delivery services, some factors will determine whether your packages get delivered on Saturday or not. They include – estimated delivery time and the distance between the last warehouse your packages were placed in.

How much does USPS Saturday delivery cost?

The USPS overnight delivery cost heavily depends on the service you’re using. Generally, USPS doesn’t charge extra fees for Saturday deliveries as it is regular delivery date for mail carriers.

Generally, First Class Mail and Package delivery start at $4 , the cost of retail ground mail starts at $7.70 , while the cost of Priority Mail Express starts at $26.75. However, the total you’ll be charged for a package delivery depends on the weight of the package and the destination.

Are tracking and insurance included in USPS weekend services?

USPS offers package tracking to all weekend delivery services. However, the case is different with insurance—an automatic $50 – $100 for all weekend deliveries. However, you can purchase additional insurance at a per-pound rate from USPS.

Are post office stations open on Sunday?

USPS offers limited delivery services on Sunday, but their post offices are closed that Day. That’s the only Day full-time USPS workers don’t work.

USPS regards Mondays to Saturdays as regular business days and Sundays as rest days. You can’t send anything to the post office on Sunday. However, some online services are available on Sundays, including scheduling pick-up.

If you’re still wondering whether your post office is open on Sundays, Please check the USPS post office locator . It provides all you need to know about your post office’s operating hours and services. You can find out whether the post office is open on Saturday and Sunday and even get a driving location if that’s your first visit. If the post office close to you isn’t operating on Weekends, you can check for other nearby stations that might be open if you need to send a mail urgently.

Can I Pick Up My Mail At The Post Office On the Weekend?

If it is a Saturday, you can pick up your Mail or package as most post offices are open on Saturdays, though they offer services for a short time.

In most cases, local post offices open by 9 am on Saturdays and close by 1 pm, which is far shorter than their standard operating hours on other business days.

You can still enter the post office and get your Mail or package from your PO box or parcel locker even if no one is at the desk – but this depends on your post office and how they work.

On the other hand, you can’t pick up Mail from a post office on Sundays since it’s closed. Though some post offices offer mail deliveries on Sundays to make mail flow more efficient, you still can’t find the post office station open. So you either wait for it to be delivered or wait till a Monday.

Is My Mailman the One to Deliver on Weekends

You’ve gotten so used to receiving mail from your mail carrier that you can’t even think of someone else delivering your Mail. We’re sorry to say, if you opt for weekend delivery, your package is unlikely to get paid for by your regular mailman.

Though in some cases, your mail carrier will be the one to deliver some instances, most post offices have mail carriers working for 5 business days. Another handles deliveries on Saturdays – if that new mailman takes a different route, then your mail delivery timing will also be affected.

Your regular mailman might be handling Mail from Mondays to Fridays; another one will be responsible for Saturday and Sunday Mail deliveries. On the flip side, you might have your mail carrier in charge of mail from Tuesdays to Saturdays, while the other handle Monday deliveries – all this depends on how your post office operates.

What Are the Days USPS Does Not Deliver?

USPS doesn’t deliver Mail on Sundays and federal holidays. Here’s a list of the 10 major federal holidays that you won’t see USPS mail carriers delivering mail:

  • New Year’s Day (January 1st)
  • Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (3rd Monday of January)
  • President’s Day (3rd Monday of February)
  • Memorial Day (4th Monday of May)
  • Independence Day (July 4th)
  • Labor Day (1st Monday of September)
  • Columbus Day (2nd Monday of October)
  • Veterans Day (November 11th)
  • Thanksgiving Day (4th Thursday of November)
  • Christmas Day (December 25th)

What should I do if I need an urgent mail or package on the weekend?

If you’re a Mail that needs to be delivered urgently and falls under weekend or outside normal business hours, you can consider contacting USPS to see if they can schedule a special delivery or pick up for you.

At times, they’ll help by helping you track the Mail or package as it journeys through the delivery infrastructure, either expediting it or keeping it in the post office when it arrives rather than sending it out for delivery.

If it’s a Priority Mail Express or Amazon package that’s expected to be delivered on the weekend but doesn’t show up, you can contact USPS customer care too.

However, you’ll be charged additional fees for special deliveries on weekends. Why spend more when you can sign up for a virtual mailbox and view your Mail any time, anywhere, using any internet-enabled device?

11 Ways to Beat Your Post-Travel Depression

does post travel on weekends

It's the moment practically everyone dreads: the end of an amazing trip. Returning home, whether from a two-week-long vacation or a multi-year round-the-world trip, can hit you hard, and this post-travel depression can affect everyone. Sometimes it can even begin in the days running up to the end—you always end up feeling a little sad in the days before heading home. As well as a sense of depression, other symptoms you may experience include lethargy, loss of appetite, a lack of motivation, feelings of nostalgia, and—a great way to cope —immediately researching your next trip.

In all seriousness, though, post-travel depression can seriously affect your mental well-being and last for as long as weeks or months. One huge reason why this is the case is that travel is transformative . After you've explored the world, you'll feel like a different person, but everyone you return to can be the same.

So, what can you do to prepare yourself for post-travel depression, and how can you minimize its effects? These helpful tips will help you get back on track and prepare for another journey.

Keep Busy During the Final Days of Your Travels

© Marco Bottigelli / Getty Images

The last thing you want is for the end of your trip to be overshadowed by a sense of sadness about it coming to an end. To overcome this, make the final few days of your vacation the busiest of the entire trip. This means booking yourself in for classes, taking tours, going shopping for souvenirs, and taking long walks. It helps to keep your mind off the fact that you'll be returning home soon and keeps you enjoying the place you're currently in.

If Possible, Don't Return to Working or Studying Immediately

Klaus Vedfelt / Getty Images

Nothing makes you feel like you've returned to reality with a bang than returning home and immediately throwing yourself back into your old routine. This won't be possible for everyone, but if you're one of the lucky ones, aim to give yourself a few days to transition back into everyday life when you return. If you can't take extra time off, it might be worth arranging to end your trip on a Friday so that you can have the weekend to yourself.

This time will allow you to overcome your jet lag , unpack and do your washing, catch up with friends, or even sort through your memories. Take your time decompressing and the depression won't hit you as hard.

Catch Up With Friends

SolStock / Getty Images

Let's face it: listening to other peoples' vacation stories can be pretty boring, so talking to friends about your trip for any real length of time can be a challenge. When you're battling the post-travel blues, though, this can be a blessing in disguise. Meet up with a friend and chat about what you've been up to in your time apart. Sure, you'll get to share stories from your travels, but you'll also hear about the fun things they've been up to while you've been gone. This will help keep you distracted and lessen your attention on how you wish you were still abroad.

Attempt to Maintain the Mindset of a Traveller

Hinterhaus Productions / Getty Images

When you travel, you'll often find yourself with a different mindset. On the road, you may be all about trying new things, signing up for fun experiences, and eating as much good food as possible. But when you live somewhere, you tend to eat at home, fall into a routine, and rarely sign up to try anything new. This lifestyle definitely doesn't help to boost one's mood.

Keep the buzz of excitement that comes with travel alive by maintaining the mindset of a traveler. Take a cooking class in your hometown, continue with surf lessons, take a dance class or two, and treat yourself to a nice meal every couple of weeks or so.

Travel in Your Backyard

Who says that travel has to end when you return home? After returning home, plan to explore where you live as if you were a tourist. Take a walking tour, jump on a tour bus, take a cooking class, visit the most famous monuments, and take tons of photos. You could even plan a museum-hopping day to learn more about the history of your hometown.

After traveling and returning home with this mindset, you might find that your hometown is a fascinating place to visit.

Share Your Photos With Friends

Teera Konakan / Getty Images

Relive your vacation by sharing your photos with friends on Facebook and Instagram. It'll make you feel as though you're being productive and cheer you up as you look back on your happy memories. Be careful with your privacy settings if you're not comfortable with sharing your vacation with the entire world, though.

Re-Read Your Travel Diary or Travel Blog

Westend61 / Getty Images

Many love to keep a record of those life-changing moments during their travels. If you decided to keep a travel diary or blog throughout your trip, spend some time reliving the best experiences and looking back on what you learned when you return home.

If you didn't want your writing to take away from your trip, now could be a good time to start a blog. You can reminisce about the best parts of your journey, share your thoughts and feelings about coming home with your friends or anyone else who stumbles upon it and use it as an opportunity to go through and edit your photos.

Find a Place for Your Souvenirs

David Cleveland / Getty Images

If you purchased souvenirs on your trip, spend time organizing them and working out where to place them. It'll help fill your home with happy memories and inspire you to keep seeing the world.

Start Planning Your Next Trip

JGI/Jamie Grill / Getty Images

One of the best ways to take your mind off the post-vacation blues is by planning your next trip. Start by sitting down and coming up with a list of everywhere you dream of visiting. Next, start coming up with a plan for how you can make it become a reality. With a new focus in your life, you'll have something to keep your mind off of your previous trip.

Start Taking Care of Yourself

Luis Alvarez / Getty Images

When we travel, it can be hard to take proper care of ourselves. Maybe you ate out for every meal and are feeling unsettled from all that rich food; maybe you spent two weeks lying by the pool while letting your exercise routine fall apart, or maybe you spent every night drinking and dancing and are desperately craving a good night's sleep.

Travel isn't always great for us, so take your return home as an opportunity to start caring for yourself. Decide to eat healthily for a while, join a gym, run, head to a spa, or get an early night. Taking good care of yourself should help reduce your post-travel blues.

Help Out Other Travelers

Tony Anderson / Getty Images

While traveling, you likely ended up relying on the kindness of strangers at multiple points throughout your trip. Whether it was a friendly local who helped send you in the right direction when you were lost or someone at the hostel reception who gave you a fantastic restaurant recommendation, you were probably grateful multiple times for the help others gave you.

Aim to pay it forward after you return home by helping out tourists who are lost in the place you live. If you see someone staring at a map on their phone and looking confused, ask if you can help them. Suppose somebody makes eye contact with you—smile and ask how they're doing. If someone looks obviously like a tourist, ask if you can do anything to help. You could even spend some time browsing some forums online to see if you can answer any strangers' queries about places you know well.

It'll keep you busy, help you get back into the routine of chatting to other travelers, and make you feel good about how you're helping others in their times of need.

The number of confirmed tornadoes from a weekend outbreak has jumped to more than 100 as recovery efforts continue across America’s heartland.

A severe weather outbreak barreled across America’s heartland over the weekend, producing dozens of tornadoes that tore through communities from Texas to Iowa and left at least five people dead as thousands of residents are now in the process of sifting through the debris of destroyed homes and businesses trying to recover whatever belongings remain.

Since the event began Thursday, there have been more than 100 confirmed tornadoes ranging from EF-0 to EF-4 , and that number could continue to rise as survey teams from the National Weather Service are still out in full force looking at the damage left behind.

Friday was the most active tornado day of 2024 , with the NWS saying it received 88 tornado reports – the most in a single day since March 31, 2023, when 161 were reported.

In addition to the dozens of Tornado Warnings that were issued in Iowa and Nebraska on Friday, two rare Tornado Emergencies were issued.

Those tornadoes produced catastrophic damage in cities such as Elkhorn in Nebraska and Minden in Iowa, and specialized response teams have been brought in to help survey the destruction.

Funerals delayed for two tornado victims as flooding rains soaked the community in mourning

FOX Weather's Katie Byrne reports from Holdenville, Oklahoma, a community reeling after a tornado struck Saturday killing a baby and a man. Flooding rains following the twister left the ground soaked and will delay burying the victims.

FOX Weather Correspondent Katie Byrne was in Holdenville and spoke with the family of one of the victims, Jimmy Johnson. They told her that he was able to protect his niece and nephew, who were at the home with him when the tornado destroyed it.

One funeral home is taking care of both funerals for grieving families but said recent rain has made the ground too saturated to hold those funerals right now.

"We just came out here to get a lay of the land and see what we have to do as far as interment for the ones that passed away," Anthony Wood said. "It looks like somebody set a bomb off."

"Definitely the most damage since I've been governor that I've seen," Stitt said during a news conference Sunday in Sulphur. "I've seen a lot of damage. I've been around the state for, this is my sixth year, but what I saw in downtown Sulphur is unbelievable."

The tornado that hit Sulphur tore through the downtown area, destroying nearly every business on West Muskogee Avenue. FOX Weather Correspondent Brandy Campbell was in the devastated community on Monday and said buildings are continuing to crumble as the wind blows, and the area has been closed off to the public for safety reasons.

OMAHA, Neb. — A tornado plowed through suburban Omaha, Nebraska, on Friday afternoon, damaging hundreds of homes and other structures as the twister tore for miles along farmland and into subdivisions. Injuries were reported but it wasn't yet clear if anyone was killed in the storm.

Multiple tornadoes were reported in Nebraska but the most destructive storm moved from a largely rural area into suburbs northwest of Omaha, a city of 485,000 people.

Photos on social media showed heavily damaged homes and shredded trees. Video showed homes with roofs stripped of shingles, in a rural area near Omaha. Law enforcement were blocking off roads in the area.

Hundreds of houses sustained damage in Omaha, mostly in the Elkhorn area in the western part of the city, police Lt. Neal Bonacci said.

Police and firefighters are now going door-to-door helping people who are trapped.

Omaha Fire Chief Kathy Bossman said crews had gone to the "hardest hit area" and had a plan to search anywhere someone could be trapped.

"They're going to be putting together a strategic plan for a detailed search of the area, starting with the properties with most damage," Bossman said. "We'll be looking throughout properties in debris piles, we'll be looking in basements, trying to find any victims and make sure everybody is rescued who needs assistance."

Damaged houses are seen after a tornado passed through the area near Omaha, Neb., on Friday.

Omaha police Lt. Neal Bonacci said many homes were destroyed or severely damaged.

"You definitely see the path of the tornado," Bonacci said.

In one area of Elkhorn, dozens of newly built, large homes were damaged. At least six were destroyed, including one that was leveled, while others had the top half ripped off.

There were dozens of emergency vehicles in the area.

"We watched it touch down like 200 yards over there and then we took shelter," said Pat Woods, who lives in Elkhorn. "We could hear it coming through. When we came up our fence was gone and we looked to the northwest and the whole neighborhood's gone."

His wife, Kim Woods added, "The whole neighborhood just to the north of us is pretty flattened."

Dhaval Naik, who said he works with the man whose house was demolished, said three people, including a child, were in the basement when the tornado hit. They got out safely.

KETV-TV video showed one woman being removed from a demolished home on a stretcher in Blair, a city just north of Omaha.

Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said there appeared to be few serious injuries, in part because people had plenty of warning that storms were likely.

The exact link between tornadoes and climate change is hard to draw. Here's why

"We not upon by a sudden storm," Schmaderer said. "People had warnings of this and that saved lives."

The tornado warning was issued in the Omaha area on Friday afternoon just as children were due to be released from school. Many schools had students shelter in place until the storm passed. Hours later, buses were still transporting students home.

Another tornado hit an area on the eastern edge of Omaha, passing directly through parts of Eppley Airfield, the city's airport. Officials closed the airport to aircraft operations to access damage but then reopened the facility, Omaha Airport Authority Chief Strategy Officer Steve McCoy said.

The passenger terminal wasn't hit by the tornado but people rushed to storm shelters until the twister passed, McCoy said.

Flight delays are expected Friday evening.

After passing through the airport, the tornado crossed the Missouri River and into Iowa, north of Council Bluffs.

Nebraska Emergency Management Agency spokesperson Katrina Sperl said damage is just now being reported. Taylor Wilson, a spokesperson for the University of Nebraska Medical Center, said they hadn't seen any injuries yet.

Before the tornado hit the Omaha area, three workers in an industrial plant were injured Friday afternoon when a tornado struck an industrial plant in Lancaster County, sheriff's officials said in an update on the damage.

The building just northeast of the state capital of Lincoln had collapsed with about 70 employees inside and several people trapped, sheriff's officials said. Everyone was evacuated, and three people had injuries that were considered not life-threatening, authorities said.

Sheriff's officials say they also had reports of a tipped-over train near Waverly, also in Lancaster County.

Two people who were injured when the tornado passed through Lancaster County were being treated at the trauma center at Bryan Medical Center West Campus in Lincoln, the facility said in a news release. It said the patients were in triage and no details were released on their condition.

The Omaha Public Power District reported that nearly 10,000 customers were without power in the Omaha area.

Daniel Fienhold, manager of the Pink Poodle Steakhouse in Crescent, Iowa, said he was outside watching the weather with his daughter and restaurant employees. He said "it looked like a pretty big tornado was forming" northeast of town.

"It started raining, and then it started hailing, and then all the clouds started to kind of swirl and come together, and as soon as the wind started to pick up, that's when I headed for the basement, but we never saw it," Fienhold said.

The Weather Service also issued tornado watches across parts of Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas. And forecasters warned that large hail and damaging wind gusts were possible.

Crackdowns at 4 College Protests Lead to More Than 200 Arrests

The police made arrests at Washington University in St. Louis, Northeastern in Boston, Arizona State and Indiana, as more schools move in on encampments.

More than 200 protesters were arrested on Saturday at Northeastern University, Arizona State University, Indiana University and Washington University in St. Louis, according to officials, as colleges across the country struggle to quell growing pro-Palestinian demonstrations and encampments on campus.

There have been more than 800 arrests of protesters on U.S. campuses since April 18, when Columbia University had the New York Police Department clear a protest encampment there. In several cases, most of those who were arrested have been released.

At Washington University in St. Louis, 100 arrests were made and the campus was locked down on Saturday evening, the university said in a statement. Jill Stein, the Green Party candidate for the 2024 presidential election, was among those arrested, along with her campaign manager and another staff member, a spokesman for the campaign said.

Earlier in the day, at Northeastern in Boston, protesters had set up an encampment on the campus’s Centennial Common this week that drew more than 100 supporters. The administration had asked the protesters to leave, but many students did not.

Around dawn on Saturday, Massachusetts State Police officers arrived at the encampment and began to arrest protesters, putting them in zip-tie handcuffs and taking several tents down. They said they had arrested 102 protesters. It was unclear how many of those arrested were students, but the university said students who showed their university IDs were being released.

A Northeastern spokeswoman, Renata Nyul, said the demonstration had been “infiltrated by professional organizers” and that the “use of virulent antisemitic slurs, including ‘Kill the Jews,’ crossed the line.”

Protesters denied both claims, and a video appeared to show that it was a pro-Israel counterprotester who used the phrase, as part of his criticism of the pro-Palestinian protesters’ chants. In response to that video, Ms. Nyul stood by her initial comments, adding that “any suggestion that repulsive, antisemitic comments are sometimes acceptable depending on the context is reprehensible.”

After protesters had been removed from the encampment by the police and then handcuffed and brought into a nearby building, they moved to block a nearby alley where police vehicles were parked. They cheered in support when one of the arrested protesters — wearing a Northeastern sweatshirt — waved through the building’s windows with zip-tied hands.

Alina Caudle, a sophomore at Northeastern University, reiterated the protesters’ demands that the university disclose its investments and divest from companies that protesters view as supporting Israel's war in Gaza.

“We want them to divest our money that we’re paying for our tuition,” Ms. Caudle said. “Our administration is not listening to us.”

Ms. Caudle said she believed the vast majority of students in the encampment were Northeastern students, along with a large amount of Jewish students and faculty supporting the protest.

By 11 a.m. on Saturday, the majority of the encampment was cleared. A moving company had been brought in to load up the tents, snacks and other items that had been scattered throughout the grounds.

The mass arrest at Northeastern was the second early-morning crackdown on protesters at a Boston campus in less than a week. Early on Thursday morning, Boston Police officers arrested 118 people at Emerson College after protesters refused to move and formed a barricade.

More than 2,500 miles away, at Arizona State University, the school police arrested 69 people early Saturday morning after they set up an unauthorized encampment, which was in violation of university policy, school officials said.

The school said that the protesters had created an encampment and that the group was instructed multiple times to disperse.

“While the university will continue to be an environment that embraces freedom of speech, ASU’s first priority is to create a safe and secure environment that supports teaching and learning,” school officials said in a statement.

Three people were also arrested at the school in relation to a protest on Friday, officials said .

At Indiana University Bloomington, where the university police had arrested 33 people at an encampment earlier this week, campus and state police arrested 23 more protesters on Saturday. Officials said that a group had “erected numerous tents and canopies on Friday night with the stated intention to occupy the university space indefinitely.”

Schools across the country have used differing strategies over the past week to tamp down protests. Some have backed off and sought to de-escalate tensions, while at other colleges, like the University of Southern California and Emory University, the police have rushed in to break up encampments and arrest students and faculty members, among others.

At some demonstrations, there were some reports of injuries, but in many cases, the arrests have been peaceful, and protesters have often willingly given themselves up when officers moved in.

On Saturday, there appeared to be increased police presence in several campuses, though not all of them have made arrests. At the University of Pennsylvania, more than a dozen campus police officers were stationed along barricades, with over 100 protesters in an encampment and about a dozen pro-Israel counterprotesters across the campus walk.

Across the country at the California State Polytechnic University, Humboldt, officers were stationed all over the now-closed campus after protesters occupied two buildings earlier this week. About three dozen protesters were inside an encampment.

Beyond arrests, schools are using other measures to apply pressure. At Harvard, access to its historic Harvard Yard was restricted, allowing in only those who showed a university ID. The university also suspended a pro-Palestinian group, but the group and its supporters set up an encampment in the yard nonetheless.

On Saturday, Harvard’s dean of students sent an email to the student body warning that anyone participating in the encampment faced discipline. But there was no sign of any impending police operation.

At Cornell University, the student newspaper, The Cornell Daily Sun , reported on Friday that four students connected with the pro-Palestinian encampment on campus had been suspended from the school. Cornell officials confirmed the suspensions were issued but declined to provide a number.

In a statement on Saturday afternoon, the university’s vice president for university relations, Joel M. Malina, said that the school had asked the protesters to move to an area “where noise would not disturb classes” and where people could easily avoid the encampment, but he said that offer was rejected.

Mr. Malina also said the university was prepared to issue additional suspensions, “as well as referrals to HR for employee participants.”

Nick Wilson, a student who said he was among those suspended, said in an opinion article for The Cornell Daily Sun that he and others had been withdrawn from their current courses and that they were not allowed on campus. Still, he wrote, the suspension “in an odd way” gave him hope. By his reasoning, institutions like Cornell would not have suspended him and others “unless they truly fear our movement may succeed.”

Our Coverage of the U.S. Campus Protests

News and Analysis

The nation’s most entrenched protest is at California State Polytechnic University, Humboldt, where pro-Palestinian protesters have occupied  the administration building and forced a campus closure until May 10.

Some colleges that initiated police crackdowns  on pro-Palestinian protests have since taken a different tack . Others have defended the move.

Representative Ilhan Omar of Minnesota has plunged into Democrats’ political storm  over the war in Gaza, further polarizing an already tense debate, after she suggested  that some Jewish students are “pro-genocide.”

Denied a Second Chance: After Covid ruined high school graduation for the class of 2020, the response to campus protests might upend their college commencements .

Deepening Democratic Rifts: Scenes of chaos unfolding on campuses across the country  are stoking internal divisions within the Democratic Party and carry political risk as a major election year unfolds.

What Makes a Protest Antisemitic?: Pro-Palestinian student activists say their movement  is anti-Zionist but not antisemitic. It is not a distinction  that everyone accepts.
