Ford Debuts New Taxis As NYC Opens Up The Field
Nissan’s nv200 “taxi of tomorrow” is out..
On your next visit to New York City, your next taxi could be a Ford Fusion or a Ford Transit Connect . Not only has Ford announced it would offer two new taxis for livery service, but the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission reversed an earlier decision forcing yellow cab owners to purchase the Nissan NV200 , according to The New York Times . Now, taxi drivers in the city can choose from an expanded list of over 30 different vehicles. Ford certainly picked the right time to introduce the 2019 Transit Connect Taxi and 2019 Ford Fusion Hybrid Taxi.
More Taxi News:
“Taxi operators want vehicles that are reliable, efficient and comfortable,” said Imran Jalal, brand and communications manager for Ford fleet marketing. “Transit Connect Taxi and Fusion Hybrid Taxi offer all three with special attention to potentially help lower fuel costs. Plus, Fusion Hybrid underscores our commitment to introduce even more efficient and capable hybrids in the future.”
Ford is targeting the Transit Connect directly at the Nissan NV200, offering seating for five – as opposed to Nissan’s four – and featuring more than 60 cubic-feet of cargo space behind the second-row seats. Power for the Transit Taxi comes from a 1.5-liter EcoBlue diesel engine, which should return up to an EPA-estimated highway rating of at least 30 miles per gallon, according to the Dearborn automaker.
The Transit comes with a host of Taxi specific features such as a recessed second-row seat, a taxi upfit wiring harness, first-row side curtain airbags, optional roof access hole for signage, and a reverse sensing system. It’s also available with School Bus Yellow paint, which is a must. The taxi can also be made wheelchair accessible through the Ford Qualified Vehicle Modifier program. The modification features an easy-to-deploy ramp that doubles as a deck for cargo when stowed in the back of the van.
The 2019 Ford Fusion Hybrid Taxi is more than just a Fusion Hybrid with some yellow paint. The taxi will share parts with the Ford Police Responder Hybrid for improved durability. The taxi will receive a police-tuned suspension, increased ride height, high-performance brakes, and steel wheels. Inside, drivers can choose between heavy-duty cloth seatings or opt for vinyl seating and vinyl floors. Again, For will offer School Bus Yellow paint. Standard features include a rearview camera, and a mounting plate on top of the instrument panel to secure taxi meters, and other fleet equipment.
Both go on sale by the end of the year.

FORD INTRODUCES TWO NEW FUEL-EFFICIENT TAXIS; HYBRID AND DIESEL VERSIONS GIVE OPERATORS MORE CHOICE, POTENTIAL SAVINGS
DEARBORN, Mich., June 14, 2018 – Ford, America’s commercial vehicle leader, introduces two new taxis: the new 2019 Transit Connect Taxi and Ford’s most fuel-efficient, purpose-built taxi ever – the 2019 Fusion Hybrid Taxi.
New 2019 Transit Connect Taxi
Transit Connect Taxi, when equipped with available 1.5-liter EcoBlue® diesel engine, is targeted to return an EPA-estimated Highway rating of at least 30 mpg. Actual mileage will vary. Final EPA-estimated ratings available early 2019.
The Transit Connect Taxi offers seating for five with a roomy, flexible interior well-suited for livery service. It features more than 60 cubic-feet cargo volume behind the second row, more than the Nissan NV200 Taxi.
Along with the newly available EcoBlue diesel engine, the new 2019 Transit Connect Taxi comes with a recessed second-row seat, a taxi upfit wiring harness, first-row side curtain airbags, optional roof access hole for signage and a reverse sensing system. It is also available with School Bus Yellow paint.
Standard dual sliding side doors provide riders with a wide entrance and exit. A low vehicle floor ensures easy step-ups and step-downs. The new taxi can be made wheelchair accessible through the Ford Qualified Vehicle Modifier program. The modification features an easy-to-deploy ramp that doubles as a deck for cargo when stowed in the back.
First-ever Fusion Hybrid Taxi
The first-ever Fusion Hybrid Taxi shares parts with the Ford Police Responder Hybrid for improved durability in a livery duty cycle (police vehicles come with many heavy-duty chassis parts, like wheels and suspension).
For Fusion Hybrid Taxi, Ford is projecting EPA-estimated ranges comparable to that of the Ford Police Responder Hybrid (projected EPA-estimated ratings of 40 mpg City/36 mpg Highway/38 mpg Combined). Actual mileage will vary.
The 2019 Fusion Hybrid Taxi includes a police-tuned suspension with increased ride height and calibrated high-performance brakes, plus steel wheels. It features heavy-duty cloth seating or optional vinyl seating, vinyl floors, available School Bus Yellow paint, a standard rearview camera, and a mounting plate on top of the instrument panel to secure taxi meters and other fleet equipment.
The 2019 Transit Connect Taxi and 2019 Fusion Hybrid Taxi can be ordered now. The 1.5-liter EcoBlue® diesel on 2019 Transit Connect will be available to order soon. Both Ford taxi models go on sale by year-end.

The staff at The Henry Ford
Cartoon of a Cabbie Soliciting Trade, 1846
Cartoon (Humorous image)
Horse-drawn carriages for hire appeared on city streets in Europe by the early 1600s. In Great Britain they came to be known as hackney carriages, for the Hackney area of London where many harness horses were sourced. Our modern term “hack” -- slang for a taxi or its driver -- originates from this name.
Joseph Thatcher Torrence's Hansom Cab, 1880-1890
British architect James Hansom patented the two-wheel hansom cab design in 1846. His small, lightweight vehicle was easy to maneuver through crowded urban streets, and the style spread quickly through Europe and North America. Hansom's design is a modification of a two-wheel carriage type known as a cabriolet -- readily shortened to "cab."
1901 Columbia Victoria
Motorized taxis began to replace horse-drawn cabs in the 1890s. Operators initially favored clean, quiet electric cars for taxicab service. Entrepreneurs formed the Electric Vehicle Company in 1897, intent on monopolizing American taxicab manufacture and operation. But their "Lead Cab Trust" scheme failed. Although this particular Columbia Victoria was privately owned, it is similar to Electric Vehicle Company's taxis.
Jones Taximeter, 1903
The term "taxi" comes from "taximetre" – a French word for a meter that measures distance and calculates a fare. Invented in 1891, these meters were widely used in Europe by 1900. They became common in the United States soon after that.
First Ford Taxi in New York City and Ford Factory Branch at Toronto, circa 1910
Photographic print
Some horse-drawn taxis remained in New York City into the 20th century. This article from Ford Times , Ford Motor Company's magazine, profiles Manhattan taxi driver Max Eller. In 1908 he replaced his horse with a Model T. With no animal to stable or feed, Eller's income soared more than 200 percent. Not surprisingly, other horse-driving hacks followed his lead.
1917 Ford Model T Taxicab
Taxi drivers appreciated the same qualities that made the Model T so popular with private owners: its low price and modest operating costs. This Model T cab features a landaulet body. It has a fixed roof for the driver and a convertible roof for the passengers.
Livery and Feed Barn Converted to Taxi and Service Garage, circa 1915
As horse-drawn taxis gave way to motorized cabs, wise livery stable operators changed with the times. This livery and feed barn converted into a taxi operator and automobile service garage. The sign out front advertises "Day & Night Service."
1925 Yellow Cab Taxicab
John D. Hertz founded Chicago's Yellow Cab Manufacturing Company in 1915. While taxi operators could order their cabs in any color, yellow was popular because it so easily caught the attention of potential customers. General Motors bought Yellow Cab in 1925 and discontinued taxicab production in 1929. Hertz went on to form the rental car company that bore his name.
Taxi Driver Assisting Woman out of Model D Checker Cab, 1923
Morris Markin merged his taxi body company with a chassis manufacturer in 1922 and established Checker Motors Corporation in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The city was conveniently located halfway between Chicago, where Markin operated a cab fleet, and Detroit, home to most of America's automotive industry.
Motorcycle Taxis in Newark, New Jersey, 1926
Taxicabs weren't always automobiles. These motorcycle taxis, based in Newark, New Jersey, offered convenient point-to-point transportation in the mid-1920s. Banners advertised the motorcycle cabs' low rate. Typically, customers paid a base fee for use of a cab and then a per-mile rate on top of that. In some cities, fares were based on zone systems rather than mileage.
Toy Taxicab, 1930-1940
Mechanical toy
Taxicabs inspired this toy from Louis Marx & Company. When its clockwork spring was wound with a key, the "Tricky Taxi" scooted around a tabletop or a floor in random directions. The toy car's look mirrored the streamlined designs in vogue for real cars of the 1930s.
Checker Cabs--"Thirty Years of Continuous Taxicab Development," circa 1952
Checker Motors billed itself as the "Builders of America's Finest Taxicabs." This image featured taxi models produced during the company's first 30 years in business. Checker's cabs were spacious, durable, and found everywhere in the United States. At the company's peak, Checker produced some 5,000 taxicabs each year.
Model A-6 Checker Taxicab, 1952
Checker announced its first postwar model, the A-2, in December 1946. The Model A-6, introduced for 1953, featured additional headroom for rear-seat passengers. Checker also offered a longer limousine version, the Model A-7. With the Model A-8, introduced for 1956, Checker arrived at a basic design that would remain in production for 25 years.
"Checker - Now, Better Than Ever," 1959
Trade catalog
This brochure spotlights Checker's Model A-9 taxicab of 1959. The following model year brought bigger news from the company. Checker made a serious play for the consumer market with a passenger car for private owners: the 1960 Checker Superba. Though based on the company's taxicabs, the Superba featured extra trim and a more refined interior. Prices started around $2500.
"Use the Only Real Taxicab, Checker," 1961
Checker stressed the purpose-built nature of its vehicles in this 1961 brochure. Unlike other cabs modified from standard passenger cars, Checker's cars were designed and manufactured specifically for taxi service -- "the only real taxicab."
"Checker, The Only Real Taxicab!," 1967
Checker's cabs were built to last. Frames were heavily reinforced, body panels were easily removed and replaced, and front and rear bumpers were interchangeable. Likewise, the company's styling was conservative and practical. Checker did not implement the annual appearance changes favored by other automakers.
1980 Checker Catalog, "Some Straight Talk About Taxicabs"
Checker acknowledged its cabs' unchanging appearance in this 1980 catalog, stating that "Only Checker looks like a taxicab." But the next year's "straight talk" was disheartening -- for the first time in nearly 50 years, Checker lost money. Two oil crises, increased competition from Detroit automakers, and a growing market for used taxis all cut into Checker's sales.
1981 Checker Marathon Taxicab
Checker ended taxicab production in 1982. The company continued to build parts in Kalamazoo -- primarily as a supplier to General Motors -- until the Great Recession shuttered it permanently in 2009. But Checker's legacy was secure. Its cabs were preserved in popular culture through movies and television series, and "Checker" remained synonymous with "taxi" in the American popular imagination.
Lyft Glowstache, 2014-2015
In the 2010s, the taxi industry faced a serious challenge with the arrival of ridesharing services like Uber and Lyft. These companies use mobile apps to connect passengers with drivers. Generally, the drivers are independent contractors using their own vehicles, and the services are not licensed or regulated as closely as traditional taxicabs.

Beyond the Robo-Taxi: Great Customer Experiences Will Define Self-Driving
Ford is focused on what it will take for customers to embrace the technology, trust us enough to take a ride, and keep coming back.
By Jim Farley, President, New Business, Technology and Strategy, Ford Motor Company
When most people talk about why autonomous vehicles will be successful, they tend to focus on the self-driving software alone. Don’t get me wrong, the self-driving system is incredibly important to develop, but it’s just one part of building a safe and scalable self-driving service that consumers can trust.
As we look to the initial launch of a commercial self-driving service in 2021, Ford is focused on what it will take for customers to embrace the technology, trust us enough to take a ride, and keep coming back.
Focusing on the customer experience is critical because the opportunities for Ford and the self-driving industry are massive. In the years to come, self-driving vehicles could help expand access to transportation, jobs and goods across numerous cities. At Ford, we know all of this is possible if you build a service — on top of the software — that provides an experience centered around the customer and the customer journey every step of the way.
As we ramp up our focus on tackling the customer-facing aspects of our self-driving service, we are excited to welcome Scott Griffith to the team at Ford Autonomous Vehicle LLC. Previously the CEO of Zipcar, Scott is taking on the critical role of leading the development and execution of our go-to-market strategy. His responsibilities will include further developing Ford’s autonomous vehicle brand and marketing, defining the customer experience and product attributes needed to deliver this vision, and building out the company’s fleet management and regional operations.
Scott is no stranger to the challenges of launching a new mobility service with large-scale operations. He spent more than a decade helping Zipcar become the largest car-share service in the U.S. Achieving that meant developing a new brand and a trusted service that drove a fundamental change in consumer behavior — transitioning urban dwellers from car ownership to car-sharing. Driving that kind of transformation is also fundamental to the adoption of self-driving vehicles and it involves many aspects of the business that haven’t been frequently discussed, including the launch and scaling of a self-driving service. This includes working with local municipalities, insurance providers, parking operators, first responders and many others to understand how a new self-driving service can be successfully deployed.
Fleet management is also a critical component to delivering an experience people will value and want to use again and again. Being able to operate a technology-enabled fleet with a high utilization rate and rapid recovery is critical for our self-driving service to become seen as trusted, reliable and efficient. This means developing a fleet management vision that delivers on customer expectations around cleanliness, maintenance, service recovery and durability of our self-driving vehicles. This is all essential to delivering the great customer experience that Scott’s team will be focused on building.
Finally, you have heard me talk about the importance of building a self-driving service that’s scalable — and where and how big you launch is key to this. Having deployed a similar strategy at Zipcar, Scott understands the importance of perfecting the customer experience and achieving scalability city by city before expanding nationally. Operating in a limited number of cities will enable us to nail the business model and customer experience and gain a comprehensive understanding of the collaboration needed to launch an entirely new service. This will make ramping up in the next dozen cities much less difficult.
There are no shortcuts when it comes to launching a self-driving vehicle or service. In fact, it is the hardest thing the auto industry has faced since people made the jump from horses to cars. We need people to trust our technology enough to get in the vehicle, and then to love the experience enough to come back. Alongside an excellent team at Argo AI that’s focused on the self-driving system and Ford engineers who know how to safely integrate advanced technology into vehicles, Scott and his team will keep us laser-focused on building a world-class service people embrace.

battery swap
Ample and eneos are bringing the first-ever ev battery swap stations to japan.
EV battery swap specialist Ample has announced it is bringing the first-ever modular swap stations to Japan with the help of partner ENEOS. The first Japanese swap stations will be erected in Kyoto and used by several local fleets.
Ample is a California-based startup specializing in modular battery stations that are easy to install and move, all while occupying a minimal footprint. The company’s goal is to help enable 1 billion electric vehicles on roads worldwide someday.
That process began win 2021, when Aaple began deploying its first generation of autonomous battery-swapping stations around San Francisco. From there, it gathered valuable data working alongside rideshare companies like Uber and last-mile delivery startup Sally .
By May 2023, Ample had introduced its second-generation swap station, adding accommodations for larger EV models while cutting the entire process from ten to five minutes . This led to new OEM collaborations, including a global partnership with Mitsubishi Fuso and, most recently, an agreement to integrate EV battery swap capabilities into passenger vehicles built by Stellantis .
Now, Ample is taking its technology international, introducing its battery swap stations to Japan.
Ample secures battery swaps in Japan with several fleets
Per news from Ample today, it will begin rolling out its battery swap stations in Kyoto, Japan, with the help of its partner ENEOS, a Japanese oil corporation that also specializes in service stations. The implementation will operate as part of ENEOS’ Japan Protocol, in which the company has vowed to reduce CO 2 emissions across its entire supply chain and invest in decarbonizing Japan as a whole.
To begin, Ample will install two drive-through swapping stations side-by-side in Kyoto, which will be utilized by several new fleet partners, including Kyoto City and Kyoto Prefecture, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, NTT An ode Energy, Nippon Life Insurance Company, Omron Filed Engineering Corporation, Tokyo Century, Nippon Car Solutions, Tokyo R&D, and Asahi ETIC.
Kyoto’s MK Taxi will also take advantage of Japan’s first battery swap stations. The company currently operates the largest taxi fleet in Kyoto and has made efforts to electrify its fleet but has encountered issues with downtimes during charge sessions and insufficient charging infrastructure.
Given its success in the US with Uber, Ample believes it is an excellent fit for MK Taxi and its other new partners to deliver battery swaps in just five minutes – all from compact, modular stalls that can be installed in 3 days.
Japan has laid out admirable decarbonization goals to ban the sale of new combustion vehicles by 2035, creating the inevitable need for more EV chargers and battery swap stations. Ample shared that it is proud to be a part of Japan’s journey to make those goals happen.
