What is a travel wrap?

Simply put, "a travel wrap is a soft, large [piece of] fabric that can be used as a blanket, scarf, head wrap, or shawl when traveling," says Rudolph. It's incredibly versatile and available in a range of sizes and materials, namely cashmere and cotton blends.

What is the best size for a travel wrap?

Ideally, you want the fabric to cover your entire body, or most of it, when using it as a blanket—yet be small enough to function as a shawl and enhance your look without overpowering it, Rudolph notes. She adds that a travel wrap should be about 70 inches long and 30 inches wide.

"Optimum length for a travel wrap would be to your knees," says Sharp. "This way you can wear it long but also have the option to wrap it around your neck without it looking too bulky."

How do I style a travel wrap?

As travel wraps are so simple, yet versatile, you can get really creative with styling. Rudolph suggests pairing yours with cropped ankle pants, a knitted sweater, and your favorite sneakers . "If you plan on going into the office fresh off the plane, try pairing your wrap with wool trousers [and] a turtleneck, and draping it over your body like a shawl," she adds.

During a long travel day, you might consider styling your wrap with leggings , sneakers, and an oversized blazer "for the perfect cool, yet comfy travel look," says Sharp. Another simple tip: Coordinate the color of the wrap with your outfit, Sharp suggests. This keeps your 'fit looking uniform and chic.

When shopping, try to stick to versatile, neutral colors like brown, gray, shades of beige, and black, Sharp advises. "As it is a heavier piece, you want it to feel as elevated as possible."

Love this! Blanket scarves and turkish towels can be used in similar ways – use them as scarves, blankets and even a pillow or lumbar support in a pinch. The turkish towel can obviously be used as a towel as well. Very versatile and help keep packing to a minimum!

A Low-maintenance Cashmere Shawl That Always Looks Good

Growing up in India, I learned to always keep a shawl or light cotton dupatta on hand for unexpected drops in temperature, too-cold settings on air-conditioners, and as a modesty scarf when taking a rickshaw home at night in Delhi. This is a habit I’ve carried with me through life and across the world, especially for this time of year, but it’s always a challenge to find a shawl that fits the bill. I’ve tried dozens, but they tend to either be too coarse or too wispy, or not warm enough, or the size of a narrow scarf, not an actual shawl . I like something I can wear around my neck but also drape around my body.

After plenty of trial and error, I found my shawl of choice : the J.Crew cashmere oversize wrap. I initially ordered it because of its size (it’s large but folds down to an easily portable size that fits in my regular, over-the-shoulder purse ) and because the cashmere looked sturdy. I usually shy away from cashmere because I fear it’s too delicate for my everyday life, but I gambled here — and am glad I did. I currently have the shawl in burnished crimson but plan to buy a few more colors because it’s 50 percent off right now.

The cashmere is soft and light, almost like muslin, but in a way that seems like magic, it’s not flimsy at all. The shawl doesn’t pill easily, even though I’m not very careful with it. I’ve been known to leave it on the sofa at night and drape it over my knees while I read. I also toss it across my children if they’re cold in the stroller — I don’t know the exact dimensions, but it’s big enough to go across them both when they’re sitting side by side – and because it’s the rare cashmere piece that I don’t have to be precious about, I don’t panic if the wheels accidentally roll over it. I have spilled hand sanitizer on it, my kids have touched it with fingers sticky with apple juice, Goldfish crumbs have adorned it — I just wipe things off with an unscented baby wipe and the shawl looks good as new.

Despite all the wear and tear, it’s still the perfect way to look somewhat pulled together for harried morning school drop-offs. On slightly colder mornings, I can wear this scarf over whatever crumpled shirt I have on and get complimented by the other parents in line, and it also looks elegant draped across my shoulders while outdoor-dining later in the day . A lot of nonsynthetic shawls tend to leave behind a layer of fibers on whatever you’re wearing, especially if it’s black or white, which means also toting along a lint roller, but I never have that problem with this wrap.

I have neither an office job nor a very active social life, so I don’t often need to worry about what I’m wearing, but this shawl and a quick swipe of my favorite lipstick lets me make the switch from shabby to chic with my favorite amount of effort, both for what I put on and for maintaining its condition: almost zero.

The only thing I may have to worry about with it now is losing it to my husband. He borrowed it the other night to wear as an oversize scarf and looked as dashing in it as I do.

15 men brought to military enlistment office after mass brawl in Moscow Oblast

Local security forces brought 15 men to a military enlistment office after a mass brawl at a warehouse of the Russian Wildberries company in Elektrostal, Moscow Oblast on Feb. 8, Russian Telegram channel Shot reported .

29 people were also taken to police stations. Among the arrested were citizens of Kyrgyzstan.

A mass brawl involving over 100 employees and security personnel broke out at the Wildberries warehouse in Elektrostal on Dec. 8.

Russia's Nuclear Deterrent Command Center Imperiled by Winter Freeze—Report

A Russian nuclear deterrent command center in Moscow has been imperiled by power outages that have impacted more than one-quarter of the region's cities amid freezing temperatures, a Russian Telegram channel has reported.

The VChK-OGPU outlet, which purports to have inside information from Russian security forces, reported that the 820th Main Center for Missile Attack Warnings—part of the Russian Space Forces, a branch of the country's Aerospace Forces—near Solnechnogorsk in Moscow is without power.

It serves as the space forces early warning network against potential ballistic missile attacks.

The development comes as Russians are reported to be suffering from power outages in their homes in the Moscow region caused by technical issues at plants amid subzero temperatures.

On January 4, a heating main burst at the Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant in the town of Podolsk, which is about 30 miles south of central Moscow. Since then, tens of thousands of Russians are reported to have no heating in their homes.

Affected areas include the cities of Khimki, Balashikha, Lobnya, Lyubertsy, Podolsk, Chekhov and Naro-Fominsk, a map published by a Russian Telegram channel and shared on other social media sites shows.

Other Russian media outlets reported that in Moscow, residents of Balashikha, Elektrostal, Solnechnogorsk, Dmitrov, Domodedovo, Troitsk, Taldom, Orekhovo-Zuyevo, Krasnogorsk, Pushkino, Ramenskoye, Voskresensk, Losino-Petrovsky and Selyatino are also without power.

The Telegram channel said that at the 820th Main Center for Missile Attack Warnings, "the crew...is on duty around the clock."

"It is here that the decision on a retaliatory nuclear strike is executed," the channel said.

Newsweek could not independently verify the report and has reached out to the Russian Defense Ministry by email for comment.

Power outages have also been reported in Russia's second-largest city, St. Petersburg, in the country's western Voronezh region, in the southwest city of Volgograd, and in Rostov, which borders Ukraine, a country that Russia has been at war with since February 24, 2022.

On Sunday, two shopping malls in St. Petersburg were forced to close because of problems with light and heating, reported local news outlet 78.ru. Hundreds of other homes in the city have had no electricity, water or heating for days amid temperatures of -25 C (-13 F).

Russian authorities have also been forced to compensate passengers of a train that ran from Samara to St. Petersburg (a 20-hour journey) without heating during -30 C (-22 F) temperatures. Videos circulating on social media showed carriage windows frozen over. A passenger also said the toilet didn't work during the trip because of frozen pipes.
