The tour was absolutely perfect and exceeded our expectations. Our guide was so knowledgeable and was interested in getting to know us. The chef (Chandolo) was brilliant - his food was amazing and he was also a really warm, welcoming person. The whole team worked great together and I would 100% recommend!

8 Days Safari tour itinerary for Makgadikgadi Pan, Maun & Nxai Pan National Park: Unite With The Wild Side Of Botswana

We had a wonderful time! Rocky, Jimmy, and Simba were excellent as drivers, guides, cooks, and problem solvers. We ate very well indeed. I will comment that the tour we took was quite different from the stated description of it. For example, we did not go to the salt pan. It seems that Rocky, the boss of the crew, received a different itinerary than what we thought we would be doing. How did that happen? The places we did go were terrific, and it was not until the second last day of the trip, that we realised the discrepancy. Rocky offered us a way to go to the salt pan, but for a couple of reasons, we declined that offer. Please note that I am not complaining about Rocky, Jimmy, and Simba. They followed the information they had received. I will also say that while we were accepting of the situation, some people could have reacted differently, and that would not have been fair to our crew. To summarise, we loved the trip! Credit to Rocky, Jimmy, and Simba for looking after us so well and sharing their beautiful country with us. Sincerely, Arthur George Busch

Excellent tour with Ben and Taffy! The only thing I would change is that I wish G Adventures would consider ending the Joburg-Botswana-Vic Falls segment of the tour in Zambia rather than Zimbabwe as there are no visa requirements for most travellers to Zambia and rather expensive visa required for Zimbabwe - and also a 2 hour process. This is worthwhile for those continuing down to Zimbabwe to Kruger - but for those of us ending in Vic Falls - it would be much smoother to end on the Zambian side of Vic Falls instead.

The safari to Moremi shoiuld start earlier as by the time we got there, most of the predators were under the tree/bushes sleeping and are impossible to find. Our driver did try very hard to find them. Also for us old people, it is necessary to get back By 4.00pm.

Wild Untamed Waiting

Botswana awaits with an amazing South African experience that you’ll be talking about for a lifetime. Inhabited by around two million people and just smaller than the state of Texas in the US, Botswana may be considered small in size but it certainly makes up for it with plenty of big adventures. Being able to witness the diversity of the wildlife that inhabit Botswana’s deserts, grasslands and savannas is an amazing gift you can receive if you visit any one of the many national parks and game reserves and sanctuaries. The sky is also filled with over 300 different species of birds and if you happen to be watching for any of them around sunrise, you are bound to be awestruck by the picture the sun paints across the horizon as it greets the day ahead.

Destination Must-See's

Botswana ms1

Chobe National Park:

Home to a wide diversity of wildlife, Chobe National Park is a true must see. The Chobe River is the most beautiful in the country. It is most famous for its large herds of elephants and Cape buffalo. In just one game drive you may see up to 15 different species and over 460 bird species. It has floodplains, swamps, and woodland making it the perfect home for these big game animals.

Botswana ms2

Most bird sightings occur between September and March when the delta is flush with water. You can still see many of the birds during the dry season too. The national bird of Botswana is the Lilac-breasted Roller but you can also see: Sacred ibis, Egyptian Geese, the ubiquitous cormorants and darters, Spur-winged Geese, pel’s Fishing Owl, carmine Bee-eaters, most members of the kingfisher family, all the rollers, the unmistakable Fish Eagle, the Martial Eagle, and many members of the stork family.

Botswana ms3

Savuti Marsh:

The Savuti Marsh in Chobe National Park has some of the highest concentrations of wildlife in Africa, no matter what time of year it is. It has lots of elephants (about 120,000!) and they are a favorite among tourists who like to admire them from the water on a sundown safari cruise.

Botswana ms4

Bushbuck, or African antelope, rely on forest coverage for shelter and food. Watch for these majestic and powerful creatures who are threatened by habitat loss and hunting. They’re native to 40 African countries and can be found in abundance at Chobe National Park.

Destination Must-Do's

Botswana md1

Chobe Safari:

Chobe National Park is the most visited African safari park. It is famous for all of its big game, and birds that you can encounter during your adventure. This location is a strict no hunting zone and officials continue to add to the reserved land. At this park, you can see animals you are unable to see anywhere else in the world, making it a truly wonderful experience.

Botswana md2

Chobe River Cruise:

The Chobe River is an important part of a Botswana safari experience since it provides you with the opportunity to see things that you cannot access by land. The Chobe is bordered by forests, open woodlands and floodplains where you have an excellent chance at seeing wildlife.

Botswana md3

Take photos:

You will most certainly want to take lots of photos in Botswana! Between the scenery and the wildlife viewing opportunities, you’ll see many sights and creatures great and small that you’ll want to share with friends and family back home.

Botswana md4

Braai Dinner:

The word Braai is Afrikaner for meat, roast or barbecue. It is similar to a potluck where everyone brings their own food and they sit at a picnic spot and eat. The most important part of a Braai is the meat itself and that it is rarely cooked by women.

Expert Advice

As you prepare to explore South Africa, Victoria Falls and Botswana, enjoy a casual dress style and be sure to pack comfortable walking shoes. Lightweight cottons are suggested for shorts, slacks, tee shirts, as well as hats and one warm jacket and/or sweatshirt. It is recommended to bring clothing that may be worn in layers which may be added or removed as the temperature changes.

Botswana e2

The cuisine is sometimes called "rainbow cuisine," as it enjoys a variety of multicultural sources. Eating and drinking in South Africa is a culinary experience not to be missed. Seafood is popular here – particularly red roman, hake, cod, sole, pilchards oysters, mussels, calamari, shrimp and spiny rock lobster – which is called crayfish by locals. Ostrich – a popular meat found on local tables – is cooked with a variety of methods from stewing and filleting to grilling as well.

Botswana e3

In this region, you’ll find a plethora of cultural products like carvings of animals made of soap stone, ebony, or other woods; wooden masks, bowls, jewelry and chess sets; jewelry made of precious stones like diamonds and semi-precious stones such as malachite, tanzanite, lapis and topaz; native art paintings, murals and sculptures; safari clothing; and tie-dyed prints of animals.

Botswana Tours and Trips 2024/2025

The beautiful African country of Botswana is one of the world’s best locations for wildlife safari tours. The nation’s Chobe National Park is home to a large population of lions, or you can plan a trip to the Okavango Delta to see hippos, elephants and crocodiles. Many tours depart from the town of Maun , where you’ll also find a museum on local culture and crafts.

Botswana Tour Reviews

Botswana - tour highlights and travel tips.

A trip to Botswana guarantees wildlife sighting!

Small on population and big on wildlife, that’s Botswana! Most parts of the Great Kalahari Desert lie within the borders of this exotic country and it is also home to the ancient bushman tribe, San. Wildlife ranks among the biggest attractions of Botswana. Those savannahs are scattered with all kinds of game lodges and the country is famous for hosting some of the best African safaris. Two of the best destinations for checking out Botswana’s wildlife are the Okavango River Delta and the Northern Tuli Game Reserve. Botswana is truly one of the most extraordinary places in the world, making a holiday in Botswana truly unforgettable. It ranks among the top travel destinations in Africa and always promises a memorable experience.

Tour Highlights

  • Ride in a mokoro (a traditional Botswanan canoe) through the grasslands of the Okavango Delta
  • See all the wildlife your heart desires at Chobe National Park
  • Take in natural beauty and rich history at the same time with a visit to the Tsodilo Hills
  • Learn about the country’s culture and tradition with a visit to the Bahurutshe Cultural Lodge
  • Get lost in the labyrinth of the Gcwihaba Caves, an underground UNESCO World Heritage site
  • Experience Botswana’s warm hospitality and ancient culture in the city of Maun

Travel Tips

  • Don’t expect your visit to Botswana to be a cheap one. This is one of Africa’s most affluent countries, with prices to match!
  • ‘Pula’ is not just the name of Botswana’s currency - it is a term of pure delight! ‘Pula’ is literally translated into ‘rain’, and chants of ‘pula’ in this often-dry country mean something good has happened.
  • Botswana has a unique musical culture, best experienced at the Maitisong Festival. This annual festival occurs at the end of March and features some of the country’s top choirs, marimba bands, and theatre performances.
  • Looking for tranquility? A tour to Botswana is for you! Botswana is one of the world’s least densely populated countries, and 40% of its land is dedicated to wildlife parks.
  • To make the most of your time in Botswana, consider skipping Gaborone, the capital city. The city is continuing to develop and there isn’t much to offer in terms of sightseeing.

Botswana has seasonal weather so please do check up on the best time to visit Botswana before planning your tour.

Highlights of Botswana safari tours

A bloat of hippos swimming in Chobe River, Botswana

Chobe National Park

Chobe National Park is probably what you picture when someone says 'safari in Africa'. Located near the  Okavango Delta , the park sits alongside the Chobe River and is home to what is thought to be the largest concentration of African elephants in the world. The majestic mammals often come to drink and bathe in the waters alongside other wildlife friends (and foes) including the cape buffalo, impala, hippos, lions, leopards and cheetahs. There are so many ways to spend your time here. Go on a 4x4 game drive, hop on a sunset cruise along Chobe River or simply sit back and listen to the noises of the great outdoors.

A mob of meerkats seen on safari in Africa

Makgadikgadi Pans

Get a first-hand glance at one of the largest salt pans in the world in what used to be Lake Makgadikgadi. The Makgadikgadi Pans are a beautiful mixture of baobab trees, salt flats and grassy plains, best explored in a 4x4. However, if the scenery alone doesn't tempt you, then hopefully you’re more swayed by its residents. Arguably the cutest animal on safari, the meerkat is native to the Ntwetwe salt pan and is often found huddling in mobs by the sand dunes. You'll also be among some of the world's largest animals such as the elephants and giraffes as well as some of its pinkest as the area is home to a flamboyance of flamingoes.

A zebra among the grass in Botswana

Boteti River

The Boteti River is a must for die-hard zebra lovers as over 25,000 zebras are known to migrate here from the neighboring game park. Due to the numbers and their stripey coats, it’s likely you’ll see them if you’re there in the migrating season. Since the Boteti River is the only permanent water source in the area, there’s always likely to be a number of animals perusing its shores. And it doesn’t matter whether you’re more interested in the prey or the predators, you’ll likely see them all. Find leafy-green eaters such as giraffes, springboks and oryx enjoying the lush vegetation and the toothy species, namely the lions, cheetahs and wild dogs, lurking hungrily nearby.

An Rhino adult and calf in the Khama Rhino Sanctuary, Botswana

Khama Rhino Sanctuary

While not quite as fanciful as their mythical cousins the unicorn, rhinoceros sightings are almost as rare these days due to their near-extinct status. Luckily, places like the  Khama Rhino Sanctuary  have homed and rehabilitated rhinos since 1992 and are now home to both black and white rhino residents. The sanctuary has a successful breeding program and is protected with anti-poaching patrols. The continuing goal for the KRS is to reintroduce as many rhinos as possible back into their natural wild habitats, so visiting this amazing place is definitely worth the animal sightings, not to mention supporting their mission.

When is the best time to visit Botswana?

Winter (April through August) is a good time to visit Botswana. The days are usually mild and wildlife is generally quite easy to spot. The summer can bring frequent rain, which can make it difficult to travel around some of the national parks. Wildlife also tends to disperse during the summer rains, making animals a little harder to spot.

There Are Important Differences in Botswana Safaris

  • You Won't Find a Smaller Group—Just 7 or 8 Guests! The best African safari can't happen in crowded conditions. We take a maximum of just seven guests on regular departures—and eight guests on photo departures—divided into two vehicles for game drives, on photo departures. An exceptionally small group ensures a highly personalized safari experience, allowing us to stay at very small camps that offer truly intimate wildlife encounters.
  • A "Window" Seat for Every Guest Our private safari vehicles have open sides, with no glass to impede your view. Though vehicles have 10 cushioned passenger seats—one in front next to the driver, followed by three rows of three seats each—we limit our capacity to just seven travelers on wildlife drives ( and only four travelers per vehicle on photo departures ), ensuring clear viewing—no one stuck in a middle seat—maximum comfort, easy photography access and plenty of room for your gear.
  • The Optimal Botswana Safari Itinerary Our itineraries have been meticulously designed in conjunction with World Wildlife Fund to provide a secluded experience of Botswana's prolific wildlife, where animal numbers are highest and tourist crowds non-existent. We have years of experience running the best safaris in Botswana, and we continually tweak our itineraries to ensure that the experience we offer is second to none.
  • Stay in Seclusion on Private Reserves We stay on exclusive private reserves,  offering an isolated setting and activities off-limits in the national parks, such as night drives and guided walking excursions that allow a rare chance to explore the intricacies of the bush on foot. Our secluded camps in Linyanti and Moremi provide outstanding proximity to wildlife, with close-up photo opportunities and the chance to shoot at sunset when the light is best. In contrast, other groups that stay inside the national parks must be back at camp by sunset due to park regulations.
  • Intimate Camps Facilitate Close-Up Wildlife Encounters Our very small luxury safari camps maximize quiet encounters with Botswana’s prolific wildlife at close range. With just four or five tents each, their discreet presence enhances the likelihood that wildlife will wander through camp. Individual verandas provide guests a private view on the African wild, with photography possibilities right out the door of your tent. And within the privately owned Santawani Concession, Gomoti Tented Camp is for our group alone.
  • Doors-Off Helicopter Flight on Photo Departures Anyone who's had an aerial view on an African safari will tell you there's nothing like photographing wildlife from on high. So we've included an exciting helicopter flight on our photo departures. Capture wildlife on the move as you soar over the Gomoti River, a year-round lifeline for animals, and the Okavango Delta—one of the richest wildlife enclaves in all of Africa. With the doors off, there's nothing to impede your view!
  • Explore from Our New Electric Safari Vehicle From our private Gomoti Camp in the southern Okavango Delta, experience quiet game drives in our new fully electric safari vehicle. Operating from our off-grid camp and powered by the sun, this retrofitted Toyota Land Cruiser marks a new era in more sustainable safari transportation.
  • Air Transfers Maximize Your Time on Safari Light aircraft flights between safari locations, rather than long, dusty drives over rough dirt roads, allow us to spend more time scouting for wildlife on safari, instead of enduring uncomfortable conditions in transit.
  • The World's Finest Naturalist Guides  Our guests enjoy the personalized service of some of the Africa's top naturalist guides—a Nat Hab hallmark. Your NHA Safari Expedition Leader accompanies your group from start to finish, ensuring a seamless experience. Rather than using less-qualified local camp guides at each location, you benefit from our Expedition Leaders' expertise—they are the most highly trained guides in Africa, averaging 15 years' experience, with additional resources provided by WWF’s top scientists. Our philosophy on this is simple: an African safari is only as good as the guide, so we must provide the very best! See Expedition Leader bios and traveler comments regarding the quality of our leaders.
  • Our Quality-Value Guarantee Ensures Your Superior Botswana Safari With Natural Habitat Adventures, you receive our exclusive guarantee, which clearly states that we will meet the lofty expectations we set in our promotional materials. To our knowledge, this is the most ambitious guarantee made by any adventure travel company. Read our important promise.
  • Feel Good About Your Carbon-Neutral Journey We care deeply about our planet, as we know you do. When you travel with us, the carbon emissions from your trip are 100% offset—including your round-trip flights from home. Natural Habitat Adventures has been the world’s first carbon-neutral travel company since 2007.

Botswana Safari

Travel packages & tours.

Choosing a Botswana safari will expose you to a true African Eden. The country’s distinctive nature is reflected in its various forest reserves, ancient wildlife corridors, private concessions and wild waterways. From the islands of the Okavango Delta to the elephants of Chobe National Park , the biodiversity of the Khwai River and the white vastness of the Makgadikgadi Pans – Botswana offers a range of African safari experiences.

The most popular Botswana safari destinations are the Okavango, Chobe and Moremi National Parks, which all offer astonishing wildlife viewing in Botswana all year round. The Big Five are found in high numbers throughout the country, and Botswana boasts the biggest elephant population anywhere in the world, an estimated 130 000. Around 550 different birds roam the skies, including the enigmatic African fish eagle and the Cape Vulture, an endangered species that is fully protected in Botswana. With its exclusive and remote African safari options, Botswana is one of the continent’s premier wilderness and safari locations. No wonder it continuously ranks as one of the must-visit destinations for travellers across the world for their Botswana holiday package.

Highlights of a Safari to Botswana

A Botswana safari package offers travellers the opportunity to experience a magical African adventure on a grand scale as this landlocked country is home to a variety of natural wonders, endless landscapes and iconic species. From the vast expanse of the Kalahari and the magnitude of the Okavango Delta to the wildlife wonders of Chobe, Moremi, and Khwai River, this wonderful part of the world is inviting discovery.

The Okavango Delta in Botswana is an ecological wonder of meandering waterways surrounded by the Kalahari. Both of these distinct ecosystems in Botswana support a diverse array of plant and animal life. Quilted with wetlands, forests, floodplains and open grassland, Moremi Game Reserve is one of Africa’s most beautiful conservation areas and a perfect stop on your Botswana safari.

Chobe National Park is known as ‘the Land of Giants’ due to its large elephant population. In between these two wildlife havens, lies the Khwai River, a scenic pearl teaming with an abundance of species.

Dotting the rest of the landscape, are breathtaking spots like Mashatu Game Reserve with its impressive baobabs, the Tuli Block where the rare black-maned lions are a key attraction, Linyanti Game Reserve which is one of the best places to see wild dogs, and the Caprivi that overflows with the life-affirming waters of the Linyanti, Chobe, Cuando and Zambezi Rivers.

Public transport in Botswana is geared towards the needs of the local populace and is confined to main roads between major population centres. Although cheap and reliable, it is of little use to the traveller as most of Botswana’s tourist attractions lie off the beaten track.

Driving off the main roads in Botswana is only recommended to expects in 4×4 vehicles, that are equipped correctly. Most lodges offer transfers or they can be arranged.

There are major airports in Maun, Kasane and Gaborone, while smaller charter flights are used to get to the other top attractions and camps.

Botswana’s currency is Pula (which means ‘rain’ in Setswana). It is divided into 100 thebe (which means ‘shield’ in Setswana). Travellers’ cheques and foreign currency may be changed at banks, bureaux de change and authorised hotels.

USD, Euros, British Pound and the South African Rand are the most easily convertible currencies (and accepted by some establishments – but, generally, then an inflated rate of exchange will be applied).

Seven main commercial banks, as well as a number of foreign exchange bureaux, operate in Botswana. Operating hours are Monday to Friday 08h30 to 15h30 and Saturday 08h30 to 10h45.

Full banking services are available in major towns, although ATMs are sprouting up all over the country. Most credit cards are accepted at hotels and restaurants. Cultural sites and community art and craft outlets usually only accept cash.

Safari lodges and camps serve international-style cuisine, generally of an extremely high standard, along with local beer and imported wine and spirits. Good restaurants and bars can be found in main towns, often within hotels. Elsewhere, food is more basic: millet and sorghum porridge are the local staples.

Tap water is considered safe to drink, although outside main cities and towns, visitors are advised to check first and sterilise water if in any doubt. Bottled water is available in most lodges. Milk is pasteurised, and dairy products, local meat, poultry, seafood, fruit and vegetables are generally safe.

According to our Botswana travel advice in 2022, a discretionary ten percent tip is typical for restaurant bills. In many places, a service charge is automatically added. It is customary to tip the game guide and lodge staff while on safari.

Botswana’s climatic pattern is typical of southern Africa, although its rainfall is less than countries further east. The rains in Botswana come mostly between December and March when average minimum temperatures are in the low 20°s. Some days will be bright and sunny, some will have afternoon thunderstorms, and some will just be grey.

April and May in Botswana are generally lovely, with the sky clear and the landscape green. Night temperatures start to drop during these months, especially in the Kalahari. Note that places in and around the Okavango tend to have less extreme, more moderate temperatures than the drier areas of the Kalahari.

From June to August the night-time temperatures in drier areas can be close to freezing, but it warms up rapidly during the day when the sky is usually clear and blue. It’s now very much ‘peak season’ for most safari areas: the land is dry in most areas so the animals congregate around the few available water sources.

This continues into September and October, when temperatures climb again, drying the landscapes and concentrating the game even more. This is the best time for big game safaris – although October can feel very hot, with maximum temperatures sometimes approaching 40°C.

November is difficult to predict, as it can sometimes be a continuation of October’s heat, whilst sometimes it’s cooled by the first rains; it’s always an interesting month.

In summer, lightweight, light-coloured cotton is preferable. Avoid synthetic materials and black clothing, as they increase perspiration and discomfort. In winter, wear trousers, long sleeve shirts/blouses and jerseys. From May-August, night temperatures can fall below zero degrees celsius, so warm jerseys and jackets are vital, especially on morning and evening game drives. Garments of neutral colours that blend with the bush and forest are advisable for safaris and game viewing. Bring a light jacket and/or jersey for unexpected temperature changes or rain. Closed, comfortable walking shoes are a must in all seasons. Special attention should be given to protection from the sun. Bring a sunhat, good quality sunscreen, sun lotion and polarised sunglasses. Wide-brimmed sun hats are essential.

Some hotels, lodges and guest houses offer internet access or WiFi (free or paid), and there are internet cafes in Gaborone and Maun. Internet access in more remote rural areas is often hard to come by.

Power plugs and electrical sockets (outlets) in Botswana are type D, G, and M.If your appliance’s plug doesn’t match the shape of these sockets, you will need a travel plug adapter in order to plug in. Travel plug adapters simply change the shape of your appliance’s plug to match whatever type of socket you need to plug into.

Electrical sockets (outlets) in Botswana usually supply electricity at between 220 and 240 volts AC. If you’re plugging in an appliance that was built for 220-240 volt electrical input, or an appliance that is compatible with multiple voltages, then an adapter is all you need. But travel plug adapters do not change the voltage, so the electricity coming through the adapter will still be the same 220-240 volts the socket is supplying. If you need to use appliances that are not compatible with 220-240 volt electrical input, you will need a voltage converter.

The best time for your Botswana safari will depend on your preferred activities or special interests. The country is regarded as a destination that can be visited throughout the year, with three main seasons characterised by distinct weather patterns.

Green Season: November to March Shoulder Season: April to May Dry Season (Peak): June to October

Green Season in Botswana

The green safari season in Botswana, which is the summer season, stretches from November to March, with hot and humid weather as well as countless thunderstorms at the order of the day. These thunderstorms are not just a spectacular Botswana experience but are life-giving and transform the dry landscape into a green oasis, teeming with new life. For avid birders, there is no better time to travel than during the Botswana green season. Birders will delight in the myriad of breeding pairs and migratory species seeking these greener pastures. If you have always wanted to glide through the Botswana delta waterways in a Mokoro, the best time to book your Botswana safari is during the green season in Botswana.

Shoulder Season in Botswana

Opt for a mid-season break to Botswana between April and May if you prefer milder daytime and cooler nighttime temperatures. During autumn, the rains have largely dissipated, driving the wildlife to other water sources and making game viewing an adventurous affair.

Dry Season in Botswana

For the ultimate wildlife experience, schedule your Botswana holiday safari for the dry season between June and October. The Botswana bush has thinned out extensively, making for exceptional game viewing and easy spotting of iconic species like elephants, buffalo and also predators like lions and wild dogs. The impressive Okavango River is in full flood and animals congregate in great numbers, a photographers dream on a Botswana safari holiday of a lifetime

Botswana Safari and Victoria Falls Packages

Botswana and Victoria Falls are two of southern Africa’s most remarkable destinations. Together they represent the perfect combination of wildlife and landscapes and showcase everything that’s good about southern Africa’s diverse charm. Victoria Falls is a relatively compact destination where the most difficult choices are likely to be deciding which activities to enjoy. Botswana will require a little more planning, with an incredible range of safari possibilities within the country, from the watery wonder that is the Okavango Delta to the arid dunes and grasslands of the Kalahari, with so many different experiences to be enjoyed in between.

7 Questions About Botswana Safaris With Victoria Falls Add-on

Anthony Ham

Answered by

Anthony ham.

botswana tours

Can I easily add a visit to Victoria Falls to a Botswana safari?

“It should be very easy to add a visit to Victoria Falls to a Botswana safari. Geographically, they are quite close, and because Victoria Falls is one of Africa’s most popular destinations, most safari tour operators have considerable experience in attaching an excursion to Victoria Falls to safaris elsewhere. From Kasane, and even more so from Maun, regular flights connect Victoria Falls with Botswana’s main safari airports. The only thing you really need to consider is which order you wish to visit them in. Do you want to begin your holiday at the drama and awe-inspiring power of the falls? Or would you rather begin by heading out in search of animals? These are the pleasurable decisions that await you as you choose between packages for your Botswana and Victoria Falls safari.”

What can I expect from a trip to Botswana with a Victoria Falls add-on?

“There are lots of variations as to what you can do and what your safari will look like. A lot will depend on the choices you make. For a start, you’ll need to determine how much time you have to spend on safari, then divide it up between Botswana and Victoria Falls. When deciding how long to spend at Victoria Falls, remember that this is one of southern Africa’s adventure capitals: there’s everything from bungee jumping and zip-lining to kayaking and hiking. Take a careful look at the activities you think you might want to do and plan accordingly. Botswana will also require careful planning. You need to decide where you’d like to go in the country. Popular choices include the Okavango Delta (which has numerous places you can visit, including the Moremi Game Reserve), Chobe National Park (which could mean wild Savuti or the more accessible Chobe riverfront) and the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. They’re all excellent choices and how many of these you can visit will depend on how much time you have available.”

How much does a Botswana safari with a Victoria Falls add-on cost?

“There are lots of variables to consider when calculating the cost of your Botswana and Victoria Falls safari. One of the most important factors for determining the cost of your trip is the season when you travel. Both destinations can be visited year-round, but the prices can vary greatly from one season to the next. High season, which in most of Botswana runs from July to October, is much more expensive than low season. Just to confuse matters, the Central Kalahari Game Reserve is often in low season when the Okavango Delta and the rest of the country are at their busiest and most expensive. Seasons in Victoria Falls tend to have smaller price variations than Botswana. And wherever you are, prices peak around Christmas and New Year. Also important when it comes to the cost of your tour is the type of safari you want. Private safaris are more expensive than group safaris, with self-drive safaris somewhere in between. Another thing to think about is the level of luxury you need. There is great variation between budget and luxury safari prices, especially when it comes to accommodation. As a general rule, prices start at US$150 per person per day for a budget camping safari and go up to US$500 per person per day and beyond for a top-end luxury tour. To this, you’ll probably need to add on a flight between Maun or Kasane to Victoria Falls: this will add at least US$150 to US$200 per person to the overall cost of your trip.”

What is the ideal holiday length for a trip to Botswana and Victoria Falls?

“The more time you can dedicate to a Botswana and Victoria Falls safari, the better. A week to two weeks would be ideal. Part of the decision about how long you go on safari will depend on how much time you have to spare for your holidays, and how much you can afford to pay. Having decided this, you can start to fit in places you want to go in the time you have available. In Botswana, you should ideally try and spend at least five to seven days in the Okavango Delta, three to four days in Chobe National Park, and perhaps another three or four days in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. If you don’t have two weeks to spare for Botswana, pick just one or two of these destinations: a week really is a minimum. For Victoria Falls, you could see the falls in just a day, but plan to spend a minimum of three days, especially if you want to do some of the many activities on offer.”

What is the best time to visit Botswana and Victoria Falls?

“The best time to visit Botswana and Victoria Falls varies a little between the two destinations. For Victoria Falls you can expect the best weather from June or July through to October, and the best months for seeing them in all their glory is from June to September. The greatest volume of water passes along the Zambezi River and over the falls from February to May, thanks to the rains that begin in November and really take hold in December, January and February, but the spray during these months can block the view. Botswana can be a little more complicated. The best months in terms of weather are usually from June to September, which fall during the Dry season (May to October) and coincide roughly with the high season (July to October). This applies to the Okavango Delta, Moremi Game Reserve and Chobe National Park. The exception is the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, when the months of June and July can be extremely cold, making for some chilly early morning game drives. The best months for the Central Kalahari usually run from December to March.”

Which parks should I visit on a Botswana tour with a Victoria Falls add-on?

“Which parks you visit all depend on what you want to see. In Botswana, Chobe National Park has two world-class wildlife areas: Savuti and the Chobe riverfront. These are filled with elephants and big cats, as well as other impressive animal species and birdlife. Apart from Moremi Game Reserve, much of the Okavango Delta is not actually a national park or game reserve, although it does have a number of private concessions. Either way, the Delta is one of the best places in Africa to see the continent’s charismatic wildlife. Away from the watery north, Botswana has some exceptional arid-zone national parks. The Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pans National Parks form part of the largest network of salt pans on the planet, and host a zebra migration that’s one of Africa’s largest. Away to the south, the marvelous Central Kalahari Game Reserve is one of the largest protected areas in Africa, and is wonderful for oryx, big cats and more. While you’re at Victoria Falls, you could visit Lower Zambezi National Park, which has four of the Big Five (no rhinos) and lots of lovely river frontage.”

How do I get to Victoria Falls from Botswana?

“The easiest and quickest way to get from Botswana to Victoria Falls is by plane. Regular flights (as well as smaller charter flights) connect Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe with airports in northern Botswana, such as Maun and Kasane. Victoria Falls is such a popular drawcard for international tourists that you should have plenty of choice when it comes to flights. And while flights seem more expensive than driving, you’ll save time if you fly, which might mean that it works out cheaper to travel this way. If you’re driving, it will take more time to get between Botswana and Victoria Falls, so make sure you allocate an extra day or two for your overall safari. But you will get a closer look at the worlds you’re passing through along the way. Remember also that you’ll need to cross at least one border (into Zimbabwe or Zambia) when you travel by road.”

Experiences of a lifetime

Go where the wild things are... and you will find yourself in Southern Africa... specifically the national parks of Botswana and Zambia, which together hold the largest concentrations of unspoiled wilderness and wildlife on the planet... and if you want to get closer... then you've come to the right place.

The okavango delta by helicopter and canoe, one of the world's great wildlife habitats....

Listen to the gentle, rhythmic splash as you are poled along and then attune your ears to other sounds. Long reed frogs will be out enjoying the sun: tiny as your fingertip, they emit extraordinarily loud croaks that resemble Oriental wind chimes. Spiders spin glistening webs above the water; luminous dragonflies hover with whirring wings; game such as red lechwe antelope, reed bucks and giraffes come to drink. But for many, it is the birds of this ornithological paradise that dazzle. Stately egrets, storks, cormorants and even fishing eagles swoop overhead... but for pure drama, the magnificent malachite kingfisher steals the show.

Spend two nights in the Makgadikgadi Pans

Days 7 and 8

Makgadikgadi Pans National Park, largest salt flats in the world

Watching the sun set in the heart of one of the most remote regions of the Kalahari Desert is one of those life-changing experiences – the silence is golden, the spectacle of the panoramic sky nothing short of inspirational. A fitting finale to the day is a sundowner, of course, and dinner.

Belmond Eagle Island Lodge

Nights 5 and 6

A modern, sophisticated sanctuary on a private island at the heart of the Okavango Delta...

Belmond Eagle Island Lodge brings timeless luxury to the Botswana wetlands. High-ceilinged tented rooms flood with light; each has a plunge pool and oversized bed with views of the Delta...

This trip was so special, it was all wonderful... sleeping under the stars at the salt pans was amazing.

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally , you will need a valid passport to enter the countries on this itinerary.

Zambia no longer requires a visa for entry for U.S. citizens.

It is required that your passport be valid for at least six months beyond the completion of the tour. New rules at South Africa's airports also require travelers to have two consecutive blank visa pages in their passport which lie side-by-side when the passport is open (i.e. a left and a right-hand page). Travelers also need a third page blank labeled "visa" at the top in order to enter Zambia. (This third blank page need not be consecutive with the blank two-page spread noted above that is required for entry into South Africa.) These must be pages marked "visa" at the top. U.S. citizens who need to add extra pages to their passport should go to the following website and click on the passport link or you could call your nearest U.S. passport agency for information on this process.

Passengers traveling to South Africa with passports that do not comply with these requirements will either be prevented from boarding their flight to South Africa or risk deportation upon arrival.

The countries of South Africa and Botswana do not require a visa for U.S. citizens.

Please Note: Guests under the age of 18 are required to provide an unabridged birth certificate during their time in Botswana. Failure to do so will result in their inability to enter the country.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally, you should contact a consulate or embassy of each of the countries visited on this itinerary to determine what travel documentation is required.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Travel Protection Plan

Effective for plans purchased as of July 1, 2021:

Tauck's Guest Protection

Tauck's Guest Protection provides you with cancellation protection before your journey begins as well as insurance benefits while you are traveling. Guest Protection includes the following:

Cancellation Waiver – Provided by Tauck:

Under Tauck's Cancellation Fee Waiver you can cancel your tour for ANY REASON up to the day before departure and receive a money-back refund (except in Extreme Circumstances*) on the land tour cost, based on your original method of payment.

*Extreme Circumstances:  In the event of an act of God, war (whether declared or undeclared), terrorism, accident, natural disaster, outbreak of disease, or other event or circumstance beyond our control that contributes to or results in cancellation rates above our historical cancellation rates in the absence of such event or occurrence, Tauck reserves the right to issue a credit to you in lieu of a money-back refund, applicable to a future Tauck journey.

Travel Insurance Benefits – Underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company.

  • Trip Cancellation –  If you must cancel your tour due to a covered reason, the plan provides coverage for the amount you paid for your travel arrangements. Since the non-insurance cancellation waiver takes care of the land package cancellation fees already, this benefit reimburses the airfare cancellation charges up to the value of your original airfare purchase.
  • Trip Interruption –  If you have to interrupt your tour for covered reasons, the plan provides reimbursement to catch up to your tour or return home.
  • Travel Delay –  Provides reimbursement for missed, prepaid travel arrangements if you are delayed by a common carrier, natural disaster, unannounced strike, or other reasons as cited in the plan.
  • Medical Expense –  Reimburses covered medical expenses incurred in the event you become injured or sick during your trip.
  • Baggage / Personal Effects Protection –  Provides reimbursement in the event your luggage or personal effects are, lost, stolen, damaged or delayed during your trip.
  • Worldwide Emergency Assistance Services –  Provided by CareFree Travel Assistance; 24-hour emergency telephone assistance hotline for medical and travel related problems.

The cost of Tauck's Guest Protection is: $769 per person

This protection provides insurance coverage that applies only during the covered trip. You may have coverage from other sources that provides you with similar benefits but may be subject to different restrictions depending upon your other coverages. You may wish to compare the terms of this policy with your existing life, health, home and automobile policies. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.

This optional Guest Protection must be requested at time of booking and fee must be included with initial payment. Fees are based on costs as of July 2021, and are subject to change. Details will be provided with written confirmation of your tour reservation. Guest Protection does not protect travel agent commissions. Reimbursements will be made according to original method of payment. The amount of any refund shall be reduced by any recoveries obtained by you from any third parties.

The Guest Protection plan waives cancellation fees outlined below, provided we are notified of cancellation before your tour departs. Tour cancellation fees are waived regardless of reason, without written notice, and Tauck will refund land tour cost.

To obtain your state-specific Certificate of Insurance that contains the complete terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the certificate, visit  affinitytravelcert.com/docs/TACGPPINTL .

If You Have To Cancel

If you cancel within 10 days of initial deposit Within the first 10 days after you place your initial deposit, you may cancel your reservation for any reason with no cancellation fees. If you cancel more than 10 days after initial deposit Regardless of reason, cancellations result in costly charges from our travel and hotel providers covering penalties and fees incurred by canceling confirmed bookings. These fees vary from tour to tour. Therefore, the following fees apply.

Loss of Guest Protection fee, per person

Cancellation Fees without Tauck's Guest Protection Plan :

90 days or more before departure = $600 per person

89-8 days before departure = $1250 per person

7-1 days before departure = $2000 per person

Time of cancellation will be when notice is received in our Wilton Woods, CT office.

In the event of an unforeseen circumstance beyond our control, Tauck reserves the right to amend the cancellation terms outlined herein.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Special Luggage Restrictions for this Tour:

Due to internal flights with limited storage capacity throughout the tour, a special rolling duffel bag (30x 15 x 14 inches) to be used for the entirety of the tour will be mailed to your home and should arrive approximately two weeks prior to your tour's departure. This duffel bag has been selected to provide you with adequate space for all items needed during your stay.

While larger suitcases are prohibited, each guest is allowed a small carry-on bag, in addition to the duffel bag.  Guests are allowed up to 44 lbs. (20 kg) for the duffel bag and up to 16 lbs. (7 kg) for the carry-on. If you choose to bring extra luggage outside of the rolling duffel and carry-on, you will be charged $230 per piece to have it flown from Kasane (on Day 3) to Maun where you will be reunited with the extra luggage for your flight to Cape Town on Day 9. Additional luggage fees may apply on your flight to Cape Town as well. Please remember that casual attire is acceptable on this tour and there will be various opportunities to utilize laundry services.

Checked luggage aboard the on-tour flights in Botswana are restricted to 44 lbs (20 kg) for checked luggage and 16 lbs (7 kg) for carry on pieces.

Checked Luggage – General

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for safari vehicle travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern safari vehicles offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, valuables, cameras, film, etc.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Immigration authorities in some nations require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against certain diseases in order to enter those countries. These requirements are subject to frequent change as outbreaks occur and subside, and it is therefore crucial that you obtain the very latest information on entry requirements as you prepare for your journey.

For the most current information possible vaccination requirements, please consult the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) by clicking here  and the World Health Organization (WHO) by clicking here . You may also wish to visit the web sites for the embassies of the countries you will be visiting. Besides providing details on vaccination requirements, these sites can also provide information on vaccinations that may be recommended (but aren't required) and other potential health issues for which no vaccines are available.

Any decisions relating to your health, of course, should not be based solely on information provided by a web site. It is critically important that you consult with your personal physician prior to your journey to obtain any required vaccinations and to review any optional recommendations offered by the CDC or other sources.

Please be sure to discuss your journey with your physician at least four to six weeks in advance of your departure, as certain vaccinations take time to become fully effective. Also, be certain to ask your physician for proof of any vaccinations you receive, and to pack this proof along with your other travel documents in your carry-on luggage (not in your checked luggage).

Researching and complying with vaccination entry requirements for the countries visited on this itinerary is the responsibility of the traveler and not Tauck. Tauck is therefore not responsible for any expenses incurred or disruptions to travel caused by improper or incomplete vaccinations, or by the failure to provide proof of required vaccinations.

If you do not obtain the necessary vaccinations and proper documentation, you may be denied entry into one or more countries, or temporarily quarantined until the necessary vaccinations are administered, or until proper documentation is provided.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

Please note that all Tauck guests will dine at Tauck Designated tables for meals. The majority of meals while on safari, are buffet due to the international guests that stay at the lodges.

All travelers to Africa should be in reasonably good health. There is a significant amount of walking on this tour, frequently in warm weather, as well as climbing in and out of safari vehicles and frequent air travel. We strongly advise that guests who require assistance walking or travel with oxygen tanks may not fully enjoy this very active journey.

There are certain rules and regulations that one should be aware of while on  safari. It is important that you listen to your tour director, local guide or  ranger, as they are trained to be aware of the environment around them.

Guests should be aware that while on safari, you will be traveling in smaller  groups and will travel on small bush planes and/or helicopters.

Guests will share smaller safari vehicles, where they will be required to rotate  not only safari guides, rangers and cars, but also seats within the car. Please  note that there are limited medical facilities, and guests will not have  exclusive use to a vehicle should they need special attention or consideration.

The safari vehicles are not air conditioned. The cars have six window seats, and  many are open air cars for animal viewing. Please note that the areas traversed  on game drives are typically unpaved and will often be bumpy and dusty.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE ON SUPPLEMENTAL OXYGEN AND MOBILITY ISSUES: This Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate oxygen tanks, wheelchairs or motorized scooters. Oxygen tanks are strictly prohibited in many foreign countries on regional flights aboard small aircraft, such as those intra-tour flights featured on this Tauck journey. Likewise, the very limited cargo capacity on such flights prohibits the transport of wheelchairs or motorized scooters.

Guests should also bear in mind that the infrastructure in many foreign countries, particularly in developing countries, often presents severe and even insurmountable challenges for those with walking difficulties or other mobility issues. The responsibility of the Tauck Director is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest. Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

South Africa, Zambia, and Botswana are a year-round destination, as frequently the climate features bright, sunny days. Temperatures in the summer (November to February) and autumn (March and April) typically range from the mid-50's to the high-70's degrees Fahrenheit , or 10 to 21 degrees Celsius, in South Africa. Meanwhile, the winter (May to August) and spring (September to October) seasons typically bring temperatures from the mid-40's to the low-70's F, or 4 to 21 C, in South Africa.

South Africa is generally considered to be an arid region, with two-thirds of the country receiving less than 22 inches, or 56 centimeters, of rain per year. The central part of the country typically sees rainfall in the summer. Meanwhile, in Cape Town and its surroundings, it is typically most rainy in the winter months.

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website by clicking here.

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with Necessary Gear who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

Generally, lightweight, cotton, short-sleeved and long-sleeved shirts, shorts and long pants are sufficient. A light jacket, fleece, or windbreaker, as well as layers of clothing, are suggested for cooler temperatures during early morning game drives, especially from June through August, and for evenings. A bandana or cotton scarf will always come in handy.

For the welcome and farewell dinners, and for dining in the larger cities, many guests like to dress up, but by all means be comfortable.

While on safari it is recommended you wear natural earth-colored clothing, such as khakis, tans, browns, and greens, as well as comfortable walking shoes. It is also a good idea to bring a swimsuit, hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, and lip protection.

Game drives can be dusty, so wear something that can be washed while on safari. Valet service is available at all lodges and hotels.A personal kit with medication for possible upset stomach, aspirin, and allergy medicine may also be useful. If you are taking prescription drugs, bring a prescription signed by your doctor in case you need an emergency refill while traveling. Insect repellent with DEET is a very important item to include in your kit. Pre-moistened towelettes, antibacterial lotion, and a flashlight will also be useful on your safari.

Pack your medical kit in your carry-on bag along with an extra pair of prescription glasses or contact lenses and a change of clothes in case of luggage delay.

For viewing wildlife, we recommend you bring a good pair of binoculars and your own photography supplies, such as plenty of film, batteries, a 200mm telephoto lens, lens cap, lens papers, UV filter and, for video-recording, an adequate supply of video cassettes.

We suggest that you pack the following items your journey:

  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • An optional jacket and tie for men
  • Casually elegant evening wear for ladies
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
  • Binoculars (7x50 preferably)
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Reusable zipper-lock bags or other waterproof bags
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling
