Melon Journey: Bittersweet Memories is a strange but cozy story-driven game about saving a friend while uncovering political mysteries about melons.

Cozy gaming has a new addition to its ranks with the game Melon Journey: Bittersweet Memories which combines a cute narrative tale about friendship with a mystery of political intrigue that rather surprisingly is centered around melons. This story exploration game which was developed by Froach Club and published by XSEED Games is actually a sequel to an RPG Maker game simply titled Melon Journey . The original game was released in 2012, though players do not need to have played the original before diving into Melon Journey: Bittersweet Memories .

Melon Journey: Bittersweet Memories is a single-player game with retro-style pixelated graphics in a green tint that is a bit reminiscent of melons, though it is likely also a nostalgic nod to the Game Boy. Players control the main character Honeydew, whose name can be changed to whatever the player would like. Throughout the narrative adventure, there are many NPCs to talk to, places to explore, choices to be made, and mysteries to solve, all with no combat.

Honeydew is a simple girl who works in a factory but leaves to visit Hog Town after a mysterious note and the disappearance of her best friend, Cantaloupe. Most of the game takes place in Hog Town, where Honeydew gets caught up with a not-so-threatening gang called the Cavity Crew. There she also finds there is a political upheaval happening with the Kitten King trying to run for mayor to overturn a law that makes melons illegal in Hog Town. Throughout her exploration and adventures, Honeydew can make friends with fun characters and there are many side quests with clever storylines to follow.

Within Melon Journey: Bittersweet Memories there is an ongoing theme of melons being essentially hard street drugs in the city of Hog Town. Simply having some melon seeds can put someone in jail. As more of the story is uncovered, this becomes an even darker theme, which feels a bit off-putting when combined with the cheerful animal characters and cute aesthetic of the game overall if too much thought is given to the implications. Philosophical debates could easily be had simply from this otherwise adorable game.

Besides melons, the other major theme of the game is friendship. Honeydew meets friends, new and old, along the journey, and choices that the player can make have the opportunity to strengthen those relationships. These eccentric animal friends as well as other NPCs in the narrative add a lot of humor to the Melon Journey: Bittersweet Memories and bring the cozy feeling to the surface even while the crime and corruption are taking place behind the scenes.

The soundtrack to Melon Journey: Bittersweet Memories is a surprisingly good lo-fi experience within the game. There are more than 90 different jazz- and electric-inspired songs that were composed by markeryjane and give the adventure a very low-key feeling even during some of the more intense moments. XSEED Games even has a special "Melon-choly Lofi Soundtrack" on YouTube that has some of the tracks on it for people to enjoy.

Fans of cozy gaming will enjoy this narrative adventure mystery, with cute characters and fun retro graphics. It is a short game, although there are at least two different possible endings that can require replaying some of the game in order to see. Many of the choices made in the game will lead to different outcomes, and saving frequently would be recommended for anyone who wants to be able to see all the varieties.

Melon Journey: Bittersweet Memories releases on April 6, 2023, for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch. Screen Rant was provided with a Steam download code for the purpose of this review.

Melon Journey: Bittersweet Memories is a pixelated story game, by developers Froach Club, Poppy Works and publishers XSEED Games/Poppy Works, about secrets and a mysterious company called Eglantine Industries. You play as a worker at the company, and it sells melon soda and other melon-based products. One day, your best friend Cantaloupe goes missing and you travel to the next town in search of him and some answers to all the mysterious questions piling up. The town you travel to, however, has strict laws against anything melon related. Will you uncover the secrets and find your friend, or will you be caught up in some illegal business?

You wake up one day in your room at Eglantine Industries to find your friend Cantaloupe has left you a note and seems to have gone missing. The note tells you to leave work and meet him and some other friends in Hog Town. You leave your room and as you explore it feels like something is off. Some strange things are mentioned by some of your coworkers as you interact with them. Strange things such as melons and melon related products being illegal in Hog Town, as well as anything non melon related not being allowed within the company building. After exploring and talking for a bit you are about to leave the building to try and find your friend but you are stopped and told by someone that the boss wants to see you. As such you follow the guy up to the CEO office to talk with Ramby Rabbit Eglantine. He wants to talk with you about a meeting but sees you have taken the day off and lets you go. When you leave the building you find police outside and a lieutenant that questions you about someone named Karl Melon who apparently died on company property. You have no idea who this is and apparently no one else in the company does either. The prologue of the game ends when you get on the train to make your way to Hog Town. Right off the bat the game sets up mystery and a sense of confusion giving you incentive to get to the bottom of what is going on. The controls are WASD or arrow keys to move, Z for interacting, X to open and close the menu. Another thing I’d like to mention is that you can interact with almost everything in this game, some things give useful information while others can just be fun and whimsical. It gives the game more character and can give a better understanding of the world to those playing. Overall, this is a cutesy pixelated 2D RPG game that reminds me of Undertale and other similar pixelated games. 

The game is very cute and has a lot of charm but there are some issues I had that I will address. For one, there isn’t a way to turn down the music or really adjust any of the settings that I could find. The game opens in a small, bordered window that you can full screen if you want but is still bordered. Overall, that isn’t a big deal and is more a matter of personal preference to have borderless windows and adjustable settings. You can also just turn the game down in your volume mixer because the music starts off rather loud. Another thing I noticed is that some of the visuals can glitch from time to time causing characters or just the screen in general to warp or move momentarily. It’s a little annoying and I’m unsure if it’s intentional or not as some games can use glitches to create a creepy atmosphere. The controls are a little janky sometimes and they can be delayed when you press them causing precise movement to be rather difficult at times. 

Melon Journey: Bittersweet Memories is a cutesy exploration game where you experience a story that seems silly and fun on its service but has secrets lying underneath. There is a lot to interact with and find within this cute world of mystery as you look for your friend. While this game has its charm there is a little something missing to draw me deeper into the story. There are also some issues with graphical glitches and movement controls that can be frustrating. I am giving this game a 7 out of 10 because there are some issues that could be refined but is still a cutesy game that I had fun playing.

A bittersweet Victory Day: Moscow 2014 events guide

In addition to a parade on May 9, a huge number of events, dedicated to Victory Day, are planned in Moscow.

After the parade ends, traditional festivities will be held on the main squares of the capital city. On Red Square, Poklonnaya Hill, in the park near the Bolshoy Theater, on Tverskaya Boulevard and in Gorky Park, people will have a chance to meet with veterans, listen to their war front stories and congratulate them on this holiday.

Gorky Park: 9 Krimskiy Val.

“Immortal Regiment. Moscow” Special Event

At 3:00 p.m. (15:00) on the Walk of Remembrance on Poklonnaya Hill will start the event called “Moscow Remembers”. Participants of the march in honor of the victory in the war are asked to bring along photos and memorabilia, medals and letters from the front, from their relatives who took part in the fighting and those who died for their homeland.

Start of procession 3:00 p.m. (15:00). Walk of Remembrance, Poklonnaya Hill.

Cost of participation: free.

Sokolniki Park. Viewing of military equipment

A grand gala program is being organized in Sokolniki Park. On this day, they will launch an open-air museum of military equipment, a solemn parade of divisions will take place, music of the war years will be played, and lectures on history will be read. The younger guests will be provided with play areas and treated to costumed performances.

“Traditions of Russia”. Come see the horse show

On Poklonnaya Hill at 5:00 p.m. (17:00), people will be able to watch demonstrations of equestrian performances. To the music of the Presidential Orchestra, the audience will be treated to the performances of the Silent Drill Platoon and the Presidential Regiment.

Hermitage Garden. Participate in the “Victory Ball”

For this holiday, they will recreate in the garden the atmosphere of the victorious May of 1945. Visitors will listen to wartime music, watch dances and be treated to meals from the field kitchen. The main avenue of the garden will host an exhibition of vintage cars. At 6:00 p.m. (18:00), the tenth annual Victory Ball will begin on the main square of the Hermitage Garden. This event has been held every year since 2004, involving more than 10,000 representatives of various military educational institutions, students, cadets, and members of Moscow military history clubs.

Muzeon Art Park. Movies about the war

On the wooden terrace of the Muzeon, as soon as the sun sets, visitors will be able to watch old wartime movies. These will be shown in the open air using retro technology – a screen and projector from the war years will be used to lend authenticity to these performances.

Traditional fireworks

The holiday celebrations will end with a big artillery salute and fireworks. This year it will start simultaneously from 16 points in the city. The salute will last 15 minutes. Traditionally, the best places for viewing are the bridges across the Moskva River – Andreyevskiy (Andrew’s) Bridge, Patriarshiy (Patriarchal) Bridge, Bolshoy Kameniy (Great Stone) Bridge, Bolshoy Moskvoretsky and Ustyinskiy Bridges, etc.), and the observation deck on the Sparrow Hills, All-Russia Exhibition Centre and Poklonnaya Hill. Please arrive early – as every year thousands of people come to see these fireworks. Red Square is still the place from which fireworks are launched, but watching them from there is inconvenient –due to the Kremlin’s buildings obstructing the view.

Theodore Mann is Broadway’s director, Patricia Birch is choreographer. Its opening took place in the year of 1992, after 18 pre-views, in the very small theatre carrying the name Circle In The Square. All the performances were held on the small scaffoldings, where even the orchestra was consisting of only seven people. Despite the huge number of primary & secondary actors in voluminous clothes (especially women in wide dresses), this performance has not moved to another theater. Critics embraced musical cool enough, calling it a parody, some awkward comic on the creation of Leo Tolstoy, the fragmentary & incorrect interpretation of the works of this writer. And so this piece of play lived-through only forty six performances, which is a very small number for Broadway (in fact, this figure is considered a complete failure), especially if it is work named Anna Karenina – those classics that hard to mess up. Despite this, the play was awarded with 4 Tony’s nominations (not so much because of production’s quality, but because it was outstanding amongst the most famous classical works). Also, this piece of play was granted with one nomination for Drama Desk Award. Only 15 years later, in 2007, recording was released, with such actors: K. Butler (depicted Kitty), Levin was played by G. Edelman, J. McCarthy (played Karenin), M. Kudisch (were there Oblonsky), B. d'Arcy James (showed Vronsky) & M. Errico (depicted Anna). After the release of the musical in Japanese in 2006, its songs became available on CD & DVD disks (directors were Dan Levine and Peter Kellogg). Release date: 1992 Last Update:December, 02nd 2015
