Whale of Asia: Star Cruises Grows Some Girth
- Travel Intel
By Bill Becken, Senior Cruise Editor
Hong Kong-based Genting HK is certainly an up and coming travel conglomerate. Its Star Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) brands together form the third-largest cruise concern in the world—comprising a fleet of 20 ships cruising to more than 200 destinations. That means they offer nearly 42,000 lower berths to the global cruise market, and mostly in Asia. Star Cruises’ rapid rise leaves little doubt that an Asian firm based in Asia can at least approximate the success of the two global cruise market leaders, Carnival Corp. and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd.
Naturally, then, says William Ng, chief operating officer, during 2014-2015, Star Cruises will continue to upgrade its fleet, expand itineraries and otherwise develop its potential: “identifying opportunities, within our core competencies and capabilities, to drive our cruise business,” he says. Currently, Star Cruises is the Asia giant with luxury cruises that sail to ports in Brunei, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.
Apart from the fleet’s renovation and redeployment, new onboard shopping venues will help the ships stay successful and prosperous. In this and other ways, says Ng, the value the company brings to the table will be based as much on its unrivalled experience and enthusiasm in, as on its deep understanding of, the Asian market.
The company, says Ng, is in the throes of making heavy growth-oriented investments in both refurbishment and strategic deployment, among other things—all in order to maintain its leading position in developing and serving the Asia-Pacific region as an international cruising destination.
Through most of 2013, the SuperStar Gemini homeported in Shanghai, sailing to destinations in North Asia. The drydocks continued unabated. After a four-week drydock that year, Star Cruises’ SuperStar Libra began offering cruises to Yangon with a range of new shore excursions. Finally, in 2013, the cruise line refurbished and launched the vastly smaller Genting World (formerly the MegaStar Aries) in order to wade into the premium-level market (comprising more-elite customers looking for a unique cruise holiday with small groups of family and friends).
Indeed, by the end of 2013, every member of the fleet had been refurbished within the previous few years. As well, Ng notes, by repositioning the SuperStar Aquarius, “we became the very first global cruise line ever to homeport a ship in Kota Kinabalu.” Then, in January, 2014, the SuperStar Virgo underwent its second refurbishment (costing nearly $20 million) in less than two years. Star Cruises remodeled more than 270 balcony cabins and tripled the ship’s retail area to more than 6000 square feet. “This work reflects our ongoing growth in Asia and will reinforce our position as the Asian-Pacific market leader,” says Ng.
As will, no doubt, Star Cruises’ 150,000 GRT newbuild, slated for delivery in 2016, now under construction at Meyer-Werft shipyard, Papenburg, Germany. Costing 707.2 Euro, with more than 1,600 cabins and a capacity of 4,500 passengers and 2000 crew members, it will, says Ng, be the largest ship permanently homeported in Asia and, of course, will easily rate as the largest ship in Star Cruises’ fleet.
Through March 2014, SuperStar Virgo homeported in Singapore and offered itineraries to Penang, Phuket (where the elephant riding shore excursion is highly popular), Malacca and Port Klang. For April through October, The Virgo will homeport in Hong Kong, sailing to Keelung (Taipei), Taichung and Kaohsiung in Taiwan, Sanya in Hainan and Halong Bay in Vietnam; then homeport for the end of the year in Singapore. It would seem the faster-paced renovation and repositioning of the ships will enable Star Cruises, if it wants, to graduate to selling a more all-inclusive product, along with its current products.
How will Star Cruises’ products also reflect elements like new itineraries and onboard innovations? It seems the line’s onboard strategy is geared to “our current customers, who they are and what they like. Certainly we stand out with freestyle cruising—just like NCL. In fact, we are constantly innovating, adding new entertainment, food and beverage choices, shore excursions, and retail variety and wellness options, both to attract new customers and to ensure that our existing customers keep coming back,” says Ng.
In this respect, new shopping options have dominated as much as anything. For example, the latest retail expansion on the Virgo “enabled passengers to buy products from international brands such as Shiseido SK II, Biotherm, Lancome and Shu Uemura. The ship also features our duty-free shop China Duty Free; jewelry and watch specialist Canopus; luxury leather goods retailer Milan Station; and our Ports O’Call souvenir shop,” he says.
Shore excursion development shines, too: “For summer, 2014, we have lined up many new places of interest among our itineraries and activities in terms of shore excursions. For example, in Naha, travelers can snorkel and dive; in Ishigaki, they can have a Segway riding experience; our Taiwan excursions will also cover several new destinations such as Paper Dome and Taiwan Times Villages in Taichung.”
Generally, says Ng, “Star Cruises’ growth trajectory in Asia could be quite rapid, since we will continue our strategic development of products with highly targeted appeal,” he says — requiring more than the firm’s unilateral, if redoubtable, refurbs and newbuilds: “We need investments in infrastructure, terminals, ports and support services, coupled with an easing of visa requirements and more cooperation amongst regional governments to make cruising hassle-free: all are indispensable to making new products possible. It may take some time: considering it took some 30 years for the market to mature in the U.S., cruising is still an infant in Asia,” he says. “That’s why we are in favor of competition. We believe it helps expand the market and the industry to grow at a faster pace.”

History - construction and ownership
Star Cruises is part of Genting Cruise Lines (subsidiary of GHK-Genting Hong Kong Corporation) - the world's 5th-largest cruise shipowner, after Carnival Corporation , RCG-Royal Caribbean Group , MSC and NCLH-Norwegian . The company (listed on Singapore Exchange and Hong Kong Stock Exchange) dominates the Asia-Pacific cruising market. Star Cruises was established as a subsidiary and travel brand of Genting Group of Malaysia (incorporated in Bermuda in 1993), with corporate headquarters in Hong Kong China .
The fleet's first ships were two cruiseferries bought from Rederi AB Slite (1947-founded/1993-bankrupt, see VIKING LINE ). In the following years, Star Cruises purchased several other second-hand ships, then followed two newbuilds - SuperStar Leo/Norwegian Spirit (1998) and the sistership SuperStar Virgo (1999).
The 1750-passenger ship SuperStar Gemini was built in 1992 by the Chantiers de l'Atlantique (shipyard in Saint-Nazaire France ). The first name of the vessel was ms Dreamwar and it was constructed with the idea to sail for Norwegian Cruise Line . In 1998 the cruise ship was upgraded (lengthened), at Lloyd Werft in Bremerhaven, Germany and her name was changed to Norwegian Dream. The ship was added to the fleet of Star Cruises at the end of 2012 as SuperStar Gemini. In the period between 1995 and 2008 SuperStar Gemini was sailing under the name "MS Gemini".
During the lengthening process in March-May 1998, the vessel was cut in half and a new 40-m / 130-ft long midsection was added. The maximum passenger capacity was increased significantly. SuperStar Gemini naming ceremony was held on 5 December 1992 at Port Everglades , the place where the vessel started her first cruise to Bermuda the next day.
Star Cruises ships are recognized by their funnel design. Star Pisces was the first with such design. Later the company based all of its ships on the Star Pisces' funnel design.

Being part of the Asia-Pacific leading cruise line, Star Cruises Gemini ship offers amazing journeys across the high seas. In 2013, the vessel underwent a major USD 50-million refurbishment. Drydock 2013 was the time when SuperStar Gemini was upgraded with a new navigational system, lots of new onboard features, new hull design.
In the period February 7-16 (Chinese New Year), Star Cruises designated SuperStar Gemini as "hotel ship". During this time, the vessel was permanently docked in homeport Sanya China (at Phoenix Island International Port). This way, Star Cruises introduced (for the first-ever) in Asia the "Floating Hotel" cruise vacation concept, providing a unique holiday vacation experience. The "cruise deals" were inclusive of stateroom, onboard dining and entertainment, as well as all onboard holiday-themed events (Valentine's Day dinner, Lunar New Year family dinner, live magic show performances, kids programs). All main onboard venues (including the 11 restaurants and the Theater Lounge) remained open during the nights. There was also an extensive night-life program. "Hotel ship" tickets prices per night / per person started from USD 78 (Inside Cabin fare based on double occupancy).

Top Asia FAQs
When’s the best time to cruise to Asia?
We offer a wide variety of Asia itineraries with our revolutionized Celebrity Solstice ship sailing during the winter and Celebrity Millenium year round. Each region of Asia offers different experiences guests can enjoy.
The winter months, from November to February, are the ideal time to explore South Asia, including India and Sri Lanka, when the climate is less humid, giving you more energy for sightseeing.
Countries like South Korea and Japan are delightful all through the summer months and have perfect weather to lounge by their spectacular beaches.
The Lunar New Year usually falls in February, and this is a fantastic time to be in Asia, with widespread celebrations in Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Vietnam.
Is a cruise a good way to see Asia?
A cruise is the perfect way to see Asia. You’re able to visit multiple places in comfort, with no effort required on your part to get from one to the other. A Celebrity Asian cruise vacation takes you to some of the most exciting destinations in the world, from Japan and Hong Kong, to the island paradise of Bali. As an example, in the space of just 12 nights, you could visit exciting cities like Singapore, to off-the-beaten path destinations in Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia.
A 12-night Japan itinerary takes you to six contrasting destinations in Japan itself, as well as Busan in South Korea. You could also choose a 14-night itinerary from Singapore to Mumbai, which follows the coast of Malaysia, crosses the Indian Ocean, and then explores Sri Lanka and three ports in India.
Many of our itineraries include overnight stops in destinations including Hong Kong, Bangkok, Hanoi, Phuket and more, giving you time to experience local night markets and restaurants.
Where do Asia cruises depart from?
Celebrity offers a wide choice of cruises in Asia. Departure ports include Bali, Hong Kong, Singapore, Mumbai, and Tokyo.
Do I need visas to visit each country?
It is the responsibility of each guest to identify and obtain all required travel documents and have them available at the pier when necessary. Before leaving home, take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the required travel documents you will be asked to provide prior to boarding the ship. You’ll find more information here .
The majority of Asian nations do not require a visa for entry, but some do. To visit India, for example, you will need to get a visa before you leave home.
What are the main ports of call on an Asian cruise?
Any cruise to Asia is packed with exciting ports, from vibrant cities to blissful beach locations on islands including Langkawi, Ko Samui, and Phuket.
To many, the real marquee ports are the cities like Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Mumbai, Tokyo, and Ho Chi Minh City. But often, it’s the places in between that leave just as great an impression, whether you’re exploring an exquisite temple in Kyoto or cruising the serene backwaters of Cochin on a rice barge.
What’s best about an Asia cruise with Celebrity is that our ships stay overnight in many ports, so you can really get to know a destination. In Hanoi, for example, you can enjoy the buzz of the city and spend a day sailing beautiful Halong Bay. In Bangkok, there’s time to see the shimmering Grand Palace as well as take a river cruise and browse colorful floating markets.
Are there any vaccination or health requirements?
There are no compulsory vaccinations to visit Asian countries, but it is recommended to be up to date with all your regular inoculations, including tetanus and hepatitis A. It’s important to consult your physician in advance to plan a vaccination schedule.
Celebrity’s Asian itineraries do not visit ports where malaria is known to be a high risk, so it is unlikely that you will need anti-malarial drugs—but again, check with your physician or travel health clinic in advance as everybody’s situation is different.
How do I handle currency exchange for the different countries visited?
Most places in Southeast Asia and Japan take credit cards, but you will need a small amount of local currency to shop in markets or buy souvenirs from vendors. For India, rural areas still have a cash economy, so you will need some rupees outside of the main urban areas.
While enthusiastic souvenir vendors may offer to take U.S. dollars, you will not get a good exchange rate, and you will be given change in local currency. If you choose to pay this way, make sure you know the exchange rate and what denominations local notes come in.
If you use an ATM on your travels, it’s safer to use one that’s attached to a reputable bank.
What languages are commonly spoken, and will I need a translator or phrasebook?
Dozens of different languages are spoken across Asia; India alone has 22 official languages. While it’s polite to offer a greeting in the local language, and helpful to know a few phrases, it’s not necessary to be fluent.
You will not need a translator on your travels in Asia. All guides on shore excursions speak English. A lot of signage is in English as well as the local language, especially in tourist areas. In many countries, such as Hong Kong, Singapore, and India, English is an official language, and in many others, it is taught in school as a second language.
What cultural and historical sites can I expect to see on excursions?
Our wide range of excursions takes you to all the main cultural sites in the ports we visit. You can explore historic George Town from Penang, and take in the buzz and bustle of Hong Kong’s various night markets on an after-dark tour.
See the temple of the Emerald Buddha in Bangkok and visit the poignant Peace Memorial Museum in Hiroshima. Learn about Buddhism with a monk in Colombo, and explore the dazzling imperial city of Hue from Chan May, Vietnam.
Are there specific cultural norms or etiquette I should be aware of?
It’s a good idea to take a little time to understand the culture of the Asian countries you are visiting. Generally speaking, extreme politeness is important, as is taking the time to greet people, and remaining softly spoken.
Many Asian countries are Buddhist, in which case, always show respect to Buddha statues and temples and do not touch Buddhist monks. Do not point at people and do not be surprised if a local avoids eye contact during a conversation; this is a sign of respect. In Thailand, it is an offense to say anything negative about the royal family.
Try to understand the sense of “face” that is prevalent in Asian countries. Saving face is important; so, for example, a person may tell you what they think you want to hear rather than the reality, to avoid losing face. Shouting at someone causes you to lose face.
Japan in particular is a country with a complex social etiquette. Just a few include not tipping (it’s just not done here); never blowing your nose in public; taking off your shoes before entering a temple; and not blocking busy sidewalks in the densely populated cities.
If you’re visiting somewhere on a tour where specific etiquette is expected, your guide will point out all you need to know.

Complete List: Here’s What Happened to the Star Cruises Fleet
- March 15, 2023
With the sales of the SuperStar Aquarius and the SuperStar Gemini in late 2022, the entire Star Cruises fleet has had its fate sealed.
Here’s what happened to the ships operated by the cruise line before its collapse:
SuperStar Aquarius Year Built: 1993 Capacity: 1,529 guests Location: Alang, India Fate: Scrapped
In November, the SuperStar Aquarius became the latest cruise ship formerly owned by Star Cruises to be sold to a scrapyard.
Renamed Arius, the 1993-built vessel spent several months laid up in Sri Lanka before departing on its final voyage to India – where it’s currently being dismantled .
SuperStar Gemini Year Built: 1992 Capacity: 1,472 guests Location: Alang, India Fate: Scrapped
The former SuperStar Gemini also ended up beached for scrapping in November. Like its sister ship SuperStar Aquarius, the 1992-built vessel spent several months docked in Sri Lanka before heading to India.
Renamed Gem, the former Norwegian Dream is now being recycled at the Alang Shipbreaking Yard , with its building materials and fixtures being sold off or repurposed.
Star Pisces Year Built: 1991 Capacity: 1,384 guests Location: Alang, India Fate: Scrapped
In mid-2022, the Star Pisces became the second cruise ship of the former Star Cruises fleet to be sold to a scrapyard.
One of the company’s original vessels, the cruise ferry ended its 31-year sailing career after being beached at India’s Alang Ship Breaking Yard in July .
The Taipan Year Built: 1989 Capacity: 64 guests Location: Singapore Fate: Sold for further service
In May 2022, the Taipan became the only cruise ship in the former Star Cruises fleet to find a new operator.
Previously being used for charters and incentive cruises in Southeast Asia, the 32-cabin mega yacht was acquired by OM Ships , a German religious organization who plans to transform it into a missionary ship and floating bookshop.
SuperStar Libra Year Built: 1988 Capacity: 1,494 guests Location: Aliaga, Turkey Fate: Scrapped
The SuperStar Libra was also sold for scrapping in 2022. After ending its public operations in 2018, the former Star Cruises vessel arrived at the Aliaga Ship Breaking Yard in May .
Before ending its sailing career, the 1988-built cruise ship spent its last years serving as a floating hotel at the MV Werften – a Genting-owned shipyard in Wismar, Germany.

HONG KONG & MIAMI--( BUSINESS WIRE )--Four of Asia’s most robust cruise destinations, namely Hong Kong, Korea, the Philippines and Xiamen, were showcased to global cruise industry leaders and media at an inclusive luncheon themed “The Rebound of Asia's Destinations” on the opening day of Seatrade Cruise Global 2024. The event highlighted the lucrative opportunities and diverse experiences for enriching Asian cruise itineraries.
Staying true to the Seatrade event’s theme “Charting New Horizons , ” the showcased destinations enthralled guests with comprehensive destination updates and notable developments, inspiring industry leaders to capitalize on the appeal of the four standout cruise destinations, and design novel and enriching programs, offering once-in-a-lifetime cruise journeys in Asia. Whether it is berthing in Hong Kong to experience the vibrant city with its unique East-meets-West characteristics, sailing towards Korea to enjoy a blend of heritage and K-pop culture, exploring the rich history and oriental charm of Xiamen, or venturing to the Philippines for exotic experiences, the possibilities for unforgettable cruise adventures are endless.
Hong Kong Excites with Mega Events and New Developments
Hong Kong is ramping up its mega events strategy, adding depth and breadth to the city’s events and festivities, which, in turn, enrich onboard and onshore programs for cruise passengers.
Cruise passengers can indulge in diverse range of art and culture experiences, culinary and nightlife adventures, iconic neighborhoods, revitalizing outdoor activities and endless shopping options in Hong Kong. Even more exciting opportunities await at the upcoming world-class Kai Tak Sports Park, situated in the neighborhood of the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal. The park boasts a main stadium with a seating capacity of 50,000 people, making it an ideal venue for hosting mega events. Additionally, SKYCITY, located adjacent to the Hong Kong International Airport, offers an extensive array of options for retail, dining, and entertainment, further enhancing the overall experience for cruise passengers.
Mr. Kenneth Wong, General Manager, MICE & Cruise at the Hong Kong Tourism Board, highlighted, “Strategically positioned in the heart of Asia and at the doorstep of mainland China, Hong Kong offers convenient visa-free travel and state-of-the-art air-land-sea transportation network. It serves as an ideal homeport for cruise lines to develop alluring fly-cruise and rail-cruise products that incorporate Asia’s exotic and vibrant destinations, as showcased at the luncheon today. Hong Kong captures enormous market potential for regional cruising.”
Korea Beckons with K-culture and New Ports
Korea is gearing up to welcome the global cruise industry as it hosts the 11 th Asia Cruise Forum Jeju, scheduled for 10-12 July 2024. The event aims to promote cooperation among international and domestic stakeholders, empowering the sustainable growth of the Asian cruise industry.
The country is preparing two new deep-water cruise ports in Pohang and Daesan. The Pohang Yeongilman Port International Passenger Terminal is nestled within a city blessed with unspoiled natural beauty and abundant tourism resources, and actively engaged in the development of a shopping and resort complex, while the Daesan Port in Seosan serves as a brand-new access point on the west coast, allowing visitors to explore the region renowned for its historic holy grounds, temples, and Buddhist relics.
Mr. In Seong Hwang, Deputy Director of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries of Korea , shared, “Korea is an attractive cruise destination and the epicenter of K-culture, including K-POP, K-drama and K-food. Coupled with its rich traditional culture and history, magnificent tourist attractions and a plethora of shopping facilities and accommodations, Korea creates an ideal environment for cruise travellers to enjoy sightseeing, unique experiences, shopping and relaxation.”
The Philippines Plans Port Enhancement and Destinations Uplift
Capitalizing on the recognition as Asia’s Best Cruise Destination by the World Cruise Awards in 2023, the Philippines is developing five new cruise ports in Boracay, Coron, Camiguin, Siargao and Puerto Galera.
The Philippines is renowned for its stunning natural landscapes, coastal attractions, marine biodiversity, heritage sites and colorful history. The archipelagic nation is also exploring new cruise destinations through ongoing inspections of emerging destinations ready for cruise tourism, such as Cebu and Zamboanga.
Dr. Paulo Benito Tugbang, Director IV for Product and Market Development at the Philippine Department of Tourism, said, “We are dedicated to further developing the industry to attract more cruises to the Philippines, with ongoing product enhancement programs for emerging and existing destinations, development of dedicated cruise ports and terminals, and championing favourable cruise-friendly sector-wide policies to support the cruise industry.”
Xiamen Set to Launch New Smart Cruise Terminal
Hailed as the “Garden on the Sea,” Xiamen is a well-connected air and sea port and ranks as one of China’s four major international shipping centers. The Xiamen International Cruise Terminal 2, set to be operational by September of this year, features smart construction and security screening systems, providing cruise passengers with a stunning experience and convenient clearance.
The terminal is seamlessly connected to a three-floor exhibition hall and Xiamen Sea World, a trendy amusement hub that offers upscale dining options and culturally rich art and entertainment experiences.
Mr. Zhong Hailin, Deputy Director of Xiamen Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism, said, “Xiamen is strategically located in the core area of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road and serves as a pivotal hub city for the ‘Belt and Road’ initiative. It boasts breathtaking natural landscapes and an abundance of cultural heritage. Our imposing cruise terminal, along with the Xiamen Airport operating diverse domestic, international, and regional routes, can amply support the development of flexible fly-cruise programs covering domestic and regional destinations.”
The four promising cruise destinations in Asia with their purpose-built cruise infrastructure, exotic cultural appeal, diverse attractions, and welcoming policy support for cruising, offer tremendous potential for global cruise operators seeking new horizons of growth.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).
Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.
Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).
Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).
UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.
Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
