Couldn't recommend Intro Travel any more! I first used them when I went solo travelling to Oz 2 and a half years ago, and picked the company by pure chance, but it turned out to be the best decision. The daunting element of going away on your own was completely taken away the second we were picked up from the airport. They helped set us all up with absolutely everything we needed (visas, tax codes, bank accounts etc) and all the activities they had planned kept us super busy everyday. It was THE best way to see Sydney before moving onwards, which they also gave us loads of information and support on. I then used Intro Travel for my Bali trip as I loved it that much. Our tour guides were Tom and Colin and they absolutely smashed it!! Thanks for being our parents for the week.

Sydney to Brisbane Experience: Bushwalks & Surfing
As far as tours go, it's great to have others to enjoy with. Wake Up was a nice hostel with a great breakfast included the first day. That day I chose to take the ferry to Manly where our tour guide Georgia showed us shopping, the beach, and this great acai bowl restaurant. From Sydney we took the 9 hour train ride to surf x camp in arrawara. The teepee I slept in was so cool. The surf lesson was great...but we only had less than 1 hour surfing in the water, if we wanted more we had to pay more, in the afternoon we went for a walk along the beach with some local indiginous people to learn about the plants of the area and try some, we stopped at the campground to find kangaroo. The food at surf X was good. surf x still hasn't sent us the link for the surfing photos though. Byron Bay is a great surf town, although I didn't surf Wake Up had free surfboards available...I had purchased the option to kayak with dolphins and didn't feel like surfing after that. the town had lots of little shops and restaurants and a walk to the lighthouse and furthest easterly point in Australia. The next day we went to Brisbane, after a koala bushwalk where we didn't see koala. In Brisbane check out Southbank and Queen street after dark.

Oz Intro + Work
When I came to Australia I’d already done a couple of intro tours in previous years and so had high hopes for the Australia tour. I’m so happy to say it met all my expectations and more! Loved the itinerary with my favourite part being sailing around the harbour on a beautiful catamaran and also spending the day at the beaches in Sydney having a bbq and the amazing coastal walk. I was taken care of from the second I landed and anything I needed the help was always available. Would definitely do it again next time I go to Australia!

The whole tour was amazing! Kayla was awesome, very chatty and helpful! She organised a meal and drinks in Airlie beach for our group and introduced us to other people traveling on the stray tour. Best time to visit australia.
Being such a large place, Australia has a wide range of climates, so all year round, there is somewhere great to visit.
Summer (December to February) can get very hot but is perfect for beach-going and other outdoor activities. In the far north, it is also the wet season, which can get quite humid, and some beaches may be closed due to jellyfish or 'stingers'.
Winter (June to August) is pleasant and dry in the north but can get quite cold in the south, especially in Tasmania and Victoria, where snowfall is common.
Spring and autumn are great times to visit Australia as the weather is milder but still warm enough for swimming in northern areas.
Regardless of daytime temperatures, nights can get very cold in the desert areas of Central and Western Australia, so prepare accordingly.
The main school holiday period is from Christmas to late January and is considered the peak travel time within Australia; expect popular tourist spots to be crowded during this time.

Geography and environment
The continent of Australia is known for being one of the flattest, hottest, and driest places on earth, but despite this, there is an astounding variety of terrains and environments on this island nation. While large areas of Australia are covered in desert, there are also tropical rainforests, alpine snowfields, dense bushland, beaches, gorges, lakes, and rivers to be found.
Australia’s national parks are home to many species of birds and mammals not found in the wild anywhere else in the world, including kangaroos, koalas, wallabies, and wombats.
Boasting many stunning white sand beaches, Australia has a coastline like none other. From busy Bondi to surfing icons like Bell’s Beach and Tasmania’s stunning Wineglass Bay , there are endless places to swim, surf, snorkel and paddle.
Despite Australia’s large landmass, most people tend to live in urban, coastal cities. Faster-paced cities like Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Melbourne hold much of the population, as do regional satellite cities such as Albury, Dubbo, Bunbury, Townsville, Newcastle and Geelong.
Outback towns have a unique flavor and a distinct way of life; things are slower here, and due to smaller populations, space is plentiful, with most locals relying on agriculture for a living. Venturing away from the city to visit the Outback and rural areas of Australia is highly recommended, as it gives travelers the chance to see a different side of Australia. Traverse the northern regions of Australia's iconic outback landscape on a 11 day Darwin to Broome Outback tour.
Culture and customs
With a strong history of immigration, modern Australia is made up of people from many different cultural backgrounds. This mix makes Australia an endlessly fascinating place to visit, as travelers will be exposed to a variety of different customs and cultures during their stay. From the ancient, spiritual ways of the First Nations population to the wide array of faiths, foods, and festivals on display in the big cities, Australia is a cultural melting pot.
Despite the differences, there are many things that unify the people of Australia. Sports, in particular cricket, soccer, and football (Australian Rules), are played and watched by the masses, irrespective of age, race, gender, or income. Large sporting events like the AFL Grand Final, Melbourne Cup Day, and the Boxing Day Cricket Test have universal appeal for Australians.
Australians relish public holidays, with national and state holidays offering locals time to relax with friends and family over a barbecue or picnic. Making use of Australia’s natural environment is also paramount during this time, with outdoor activities like bushwalking, swimming at the beach, or lazing in the park popular with locals.
Eating and drinking
Intrepid believes that one of the best ways of experiencing a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savoring a cheap eat, or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.
Australia is a land that has been built by immigrants, and these multicultural influences are evident in the wide array of food available. In the cities, it’s possible to find world-class Vietnamese, Turkish, Italian, Greek, Chinese, Thai, Japanese, and Indian restaurants, as well as excellent gastro-pub fare. Head to the Outback, and you’ll find authentic ' bush tucker ', simple campfire meals, and sizzling barbecues.

What's the transport like in Australia?
Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are heaps more fun. Depending on which trip you're on while in Australia, you may even find yourself traveling overland.
Overland tours
Australia is a big place – like, huge. Overland tours involve a lot of time on the road covering long distances, and sometimes the landscape can be pretty barren, so bring a book or some tunes to keep you company.
What's the accommodation like in Australia?
Traveling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavor to provide travelers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodation as unique and traditional as possible.
When traveling with us in Australia you may find yourself staying in a:
Our lodge accommodation is located outside major cities, such as near the entrance to a National Park, and has its own amenities such as a restaurant or dining room. Lodges are comfortable places to stay and offer a good night's rest after a day spent exploring the natural beauty of Australia.
Permanent Tented Campsite
There's no need to put up your tent when you spend the night in a Permanent Tented Campsite. You'll have a roof over your head and will bunk down on sleeper mats on the ground or stretcher (camp) beds, with access to a toilet/shower block. Tent sizes can vary depending on the trip you're on and the location you're visiting. Some of our permanent tented campsites are a little bit fancy, others are very simple. Sometimes you'll be sharing a tent with others in your group.
Our bush camping experiences are as diverse as Australia itself. Some offer swag camping under cover or under the twinkling stars. You could be sleeping in a tent with access to simple toilet or shower amenities or you might not have access to a shower at all. However, the scenery at these magical spots makes it worth going without a bath for a day or so. Sometimes a trip has participatory camping where everyone pitches in to help. Other times, a staff member is on hand to look after things like cooking.
We provide accommodation at a wide variety of hotels around Australia. Some are quite upmarket, others less so, but all of them offer a comfortable stay and ensuite facilities.
We use hostels on some trips which means your bed could be in a twin room or a shared dorm room. Some of these rooms come with their own facilities while others have share facilities.

Australia`s seasons are opposite to those in the Northern Hemisphere, with Winter occurring between the months of June through August, Springtime from September to November, Summertime runs between December through February, and Autumn is from March through May. Some of the best months to visit the country are between April and August, which is low season, and traveling prices for accommodations and flights are at their lowest, along with comfortable cooler weather patterns. Temperatures differ from the northern to southern states in Australia, with the north being the driest area, with hotter temperatures and humidity for most of the year, and the southern regions offer warm summers and cool winters. The wintertime in Oz is the peak tourist season throughout most of the country, especially in the warmer northern regions. Peak season tends to run from Christmas time through to the end of January when accommodations are fully booked months in advance, and the locals are enjoying their Christmas break. The northern states experience high season from June until August when the weather is warmer in the north and southern residents travel to escape the colder temperatures. October through March is the hottest time of the year, along with high humidity and frequent rainstorms. The north is intensely hot during this time of year. However, this time of year is considered to be the country`s low season when travel costs are generally lower and less crowded, if you can stand the heat then traveling during the summer low season is perfect. Cyclones can occur sometimes in Australia and are more common on the coast and in Cairns between November and May. In the west, cyclones can be more common in January and February. Australian Travel Packages: Vivid Sydney and Surrounds
Get a local’s view of Sydney, explore the beautiful Blue Mountains, and get a taste of the Hunter Valley wine region. Visiting during Vivid Sydney (May – June) gives you a unique and colorful view of this extraordinary city!
We designed this Australian Travel Packages: Vivid Sydney and Surrounds vacation for a couple from Toronto who wanted to see the highlights of Sydney while also exploring some of Australia’s gorgeous natural attractions. With this custom vacation, they were able to experience cosmopolitan Sydney, the beautiful Blue Mountains, and the renowned Hunter Valley wine region.
They started their Australian Travel Packages: Vivid Sydney and Surrounds vacation at a fabulous apartment-style hotel in Sydney. They arrived during Vivid Sydney, where the entire city comes to life in spectacular artistic displays. They were able to see historic sights—including the Sydney Opera House, Customs House, the Museum of Contemporary Art, and Taronga Zoo—illuminated in brilliant color. During their leisure days, they had plenty to explore with installations around the city, and the nighttime projections on the Sydney Opera House were unforgettable!
They were able to get a unique experience at the iconic Sydney Opera House with an exclusive lunch and a behind-the-scenes tour of the famous building. We also arranged for them to see the city from above with an exciting twilight climb to Sydney Harbour Bridge; from the water with an exclusive luxury cruise on Sydney Harbour; and by bike on a fun and leisurely tour of Sydney’s highlights.
Continuing their Australian Travel Packages: Vivid Sydney and Surrounds vacation, they embarked on a 3-day journey to explore the nearby Blue Mountains and Hunter Valley. Their luxury tour picked them up in Sydney and took them to several scenic lookout points to soak up views of the magnificent escarpments, waterfalls, and wildlife of the Blue Mountains. They even got the chance to meet unique Australian wildlife!
Next, it was on to Hunter Valley for cellar door tastings at renowned wineries, along with some delicious gourmet lunches and cheese and chocolate samplings that gave them a true taste of Australia. After 3 days exploring the diverse sights, sounds, and tastes of the Sydney area, their tour dropped them off back in the city. They enjoyed a final night at leisure to enjoy sunny Sydney and recount the week’s incredible adventures.

Australia Vacations, Tours, Trips & Travel Packages
Before setting off on an Australia vacation, learn something about the country's background and history. Is it an island or a continent? Australia is the sixth-largest landmass in the world, supporting endless diversity across its six states and two territories. One can explore tropical rainforests, red deserts, coral reefs, snow-clad mountains, wetlands, wine regions, national parks, bushland, and so much more. That's not to discount Australia's equally diverse and culture-rich cities.
Why should I travel to Australia?
The list of reasons for visiting Australia is endless, whether you're looking to stretch out on its beaches, see its unique nature and wildlife (think of indigenous animals such as kangaroos, koalas, wallabies, wombats, Tasmanian devils, kookaburras and emus), abundant sports including surfing, scuba diving, and snorkelling, delicious food and wine (including the world's best Shiraz), and cultural attractions.
What are the best places to visit in Australia?
It's difficult to do Australia justice in just one trip, and almost impossible to rank its attractions and cities, but here are some top picks for your shortlist.
Sydney: Your Welcome to Australia
The country’s largest city is known as “The Harbour City” due to it being mainly built around Sydney Harbour. It has been recognized as one of the world’s most beautiful metropolises, dominated by the striking Sydney Harbour Bridge (also known as the “Coat Hanger”) and the Sydney Opera House with its sail-shaped design. Sydney also boasts a number of sandy surf beaches within easy reach of its centre, including Bondi and Manly. A harbour cruise takes in not only the skyline of Sydney but also the attractive nearby suburbs spread out around the harbour. The city boasts several very beautiful and scenic parks including the Royal Botanical Gardens in the shadow of Government House. Nearby, you'll find the Art gallery of New South Wales , the Museum of Sydney, and the Australian Museum. Take a stroll around the historic Rocks neighbourhood with its Art Deco buildings, or Paddington with its grand Victorian homes and lively café and restaurant scene,
What are the best day trips from Sydney?
Two hours west of the city, the Blue Mountains offer remarkable scenery and are a UNESCO World Heritage site. The dramatic scenery encompasses steep cliffs, eucalyptus forests, waterfalls, and small villages. The mountains include the Three Sisters, a trio of awe-inspiring rocky pinnacles. There are 140 kilometres/75 miles of walking trails as well as a cable railway purported to be the steepest anywhere. Katoomba, a small town offering arty boutique shops makes a base for staying overnight. Another region not far from Sydney is the Hunter Valley , a wine-producing region with over 120 wineries. The Hunter Valley Gardens are also popular, with 25 acres of colourful flowers.
Melbourne: Australia's Cultural Capital
Forever Sydney's friendly rival, Melbourne adds a touch of sophistication to your Australia vacation. It is the most European of Australia’s cities and is the country's cultural capital. Its unique character is defined by its trams (streetcars) and its Victorian-era architecture, plus excellent shopping and cultural sites such as art galleries and museums. It offers colourful neighbourhoods such as Fitzroy and St Kilda, the latter a beach resort as well as a trendy suburb. Melbourne is also a great base for day trips, either to Phillip Island to watch the Little Penguin Parade at sunset, or the scenic Great Ocean Road to take in views of the Twelve Apostles.
Adelaide: Australia's Tastiest City
Adelaide is an easy-going, relaxed city in love with gardens and good wine. It's also something of a theatre and cabaret hub, hosting a biannual Arts Festival, and the world's largest cabaret festival. It's also a wonderful centre from which to visit the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale wine districts. Nearby Kangaroo Island offers an abundance of wildlife to see along with some unique landscapes, but can be a rushed day trip, so stay overnight if possible. If you're pressed for time, Cleland Conservation Park offers another way to get up close to many of the country’s native animals.
Canberra: A Custom Built Capital
Canberra , the serene unhurried and purpose-built and planned capital, is located around the attractive artificial Lake Burley Griffin. Some of the major landmarks are its unmistakable Parliament House, the Old Parliament Building, and the Australian War Memorial. Canberra also has several of Australia's top art galleries and museums.
Brisbane: Welcome to the Sunshine State
Brisbane is Australia’s third-largest city and is known as the “City of Sunny Days” due to its sub-tropical climate. The Brisbane River defines the city's charm and character. A major attraction is the nearby Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, the world’s largest, and one of the few places in the world you can legally hold one of these animals.
Not far from Brisbane are two excellent beach destinations. The Gold Coast offers 30 beaches including world-renowned Surfers Paradise. The Sunshine Coast has 70 kilometres/ 44 miles of uncrowded white-sand beaches to enjoy. Both are close to lush hinterland, with scenic national parks, mountains, waterfalls, and rainforests.
Perth: Get Out There to Western Australia
Perth might be out of your way, but it's worth the trip! Australia’s fourth-largest city. It is not only laid-back but also culturally diverse with attractive, uncrowded beaches and gardens. King’s Park is a landmark larger than New York's Central Park and encompasses an excellent botanical garden. From Perth, one can visit the wine country of Western Australia in the Swan Valley, and in the Margaret River region.
Darwin and the Top End
Darwin , in the north of the country, is small yet cosmopolitan, thanks to many different cultures that have come to call it home over the years. Besides its own fascinating history, particularly for World War Two buffs, it's a handy base for visiting both Charles Darwin National Park, one of Australia’s largest wetlands, and Kakadu National Park , the country’s largest national park with crocodiles, unique birdlife and the world's largest collection of Aboriginal rock art. Try a short boat cruise there to see everything.
Cairns: Gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree
Cairns in Northern Queensland is the northern gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and is an essential addition for any Australian first-timer. It is also surrounded by rainforest and the scenic rail trip to the town of Kuranda is another must-do. A little further north, you'll find the world's oldest living rainforest, the beautiful Daintree.
How Do I Take A Great Barrier Reef Tour?
Australia's Great Barrier Reef is located on the east coast. It is 2300 kilometres/1400 miles in length with a colourful underwater kingdom containing 1500 species of tropical fish alone. It is the largest coral reef formation in the world offering a spectacular array of marine life. You can reach many parts of the reef from Cairns or nearby Port Douglas. However, further to the south lie the Whitsundays , a group of islands that includes Hayman, Hamilton and Whitehaven Islands. An excellent, less crowded way to see lesser-known parts of the Great Barrier Reef is to take a short cruise from the Whitsundays.
The Australian Outback
The Australian Outback is a vast area made up of either semi-arid or desert land. A great place to start exploring is in Alice Springs , and it`s the perfect place to explore the “Red Centre." It is also the home of the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Activities here can include camel rides from one of the many camel farms, stargazing under the clear desert skies, and hot air ballooning. One can visit the nearby King’s Canyon and the MacDonnell Ranges. 450 kilometres/270 miles away is Uluru or Ayers Rock , the huge sandstone monolith which rises 348 metres/1142 feet above the surrounding desert. To the local Anangu people, it is a sacred site, and climbing is now forbidden. One of the interesting features of the rock is the change in colour as the day progresses. Nearby, you'll find Kata Tjuta, also known as The Olgas. Said in the Aboriginal legend to be the eggs of the Rainbow Serpent that first created the world, these domes are in fact the eroded remains of another monolith that was once larger than Uluru.
Add a Cheeky Tour of Tasmania
Tasmania is an incredibly scenic destination with many rugged mountains and wilderness areas, It is in fact, the most mountainous state in Australia. Jagged peaks rise above dense forests and misty lakes in areas like Cradle Mountain. Tasmania's capital, Hobart is a pretty, arts-loving city with a vibrant waterfront and harbour built on reclaimed land. It is also associated historically with the convict era, as depicted at the Port Arthur Historic Site, an ex-penal colony. A short ferry ride up the Derwent River lies the cutting-edge Museum of Old and New Art.
There is so much more to enjoy and experience in this magical land. The biggest decision is choosing where to visit in the time available. Our Best Time to Visit Australia page will also help you decide when to travel.
