Brazil Tours & Vacations

Woman dancing in colourful red and yellow costumes, with headdresses at the Rio carnival in Brazil

Everything in Brazil is bigger, brighter and bolder – from the waterfalls and jungles to the street parties and beaches. It’s no wonder there’s always a festival.

Brazilians are famous for their zest for life. The country is loaded with incredible natural attractions – the Amazon, roaring Iguazu Falls and jungle-clad mountains where you feel on top of the world (much like Christ the Redeemer). And let’s not forget Brazil’s infectious music – from samba and bossa nova to Afro-Brazilian beats – and a party to be had around every corner. And of course the pumping beaches, where you can play football until the sun dips low behind Corcovado.   Brazil   is your cue to pick up a caipirinha and join the fun.

Best time to visit brazil.

In most parts of Brazil, temperatures range from 20 to 30 degrees Celsius, regardless of the season. The summer months between December and February can be hot and humid, bringing temperatures to the high 30s – perfect weather to enjoy Brazil’s famous beaches. It’s also festival season, so it’s well worth visiting during this time.

Rainfall varies greatly around Brazil so depending on where you’re traveling, you could experience some rain. Around the Pantanal, Manaus and the Amazon basin, expect patches of rain all year round. Rio and the areas around Foz de Iguacu don’t have distinct rainy seasons and are typically drier than some other areas of Brazil.

The south of Brazil experiences extreme seasonal changes, so pack accordingly.

Culture and customs

Brazilians are universally known for their infectious enthusiasm and lust for life. The wild celebratory atmosphere of Carnaval isn’t a one-off —impromptu street parties, heaving nightclubs and busy dance halls all display the same vibrant energy and passion all year round. Travelers will find that music, dance and good times are all passionately pursued by most Brazilians, regardless of income, gender or age. But it doesn’t stop there. Fun is not limited to the dynamic bars and clubs of the big cities - the natural world is also enjoyed by most Brazilians. With so many spectacular beaches, national parks, mountains and forests, there are plenty of places for Brazilians to enjoy their favorite past times – football, surfing, swimming, hiking, volleyball and capoeira (a Brazilian blend of martial arts and dance). Brazilians are also known for being one of the most open, friendly and affectionate nationalities – personal space isn’t regarded as highly in Brazil as in most other countries, so expect to be hugged and kissed by new and old friends when traveling here.

In contrast to the exuberant, modern life that Brazil's city dwellers live, are the humble, traditional ways of the indigenous tribes that live in the Amazon and surrounds. Despite modern advances, many still live off the land – hunting for wild animals and gathering fruit and berries - although sadly this is rapidly changing due to deforestation and urbanization. In the face of this, many tribes still cling to their ancient culture through traditional clothing, dance and song.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savoring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Brazil’s major cities feature a wide range of international cuisine, so it’s possible to eat a western-style breakfast, Mexican for lunch and Italian for dinner, with a few traditional Brazilian snacks in between. For an in-depth look at what you can eat in Brazil, visit our   South American food guide .

Things to try in Brazil

1. Churrasco

This traditional Brazilian barbecue is a true pleasure for meat eaters. Beef, pork, chicken, duck, lamb and fish are all skewered and cooked to perfection over hot coals, creating a smoky flavor and tender texture.

Brazil’s coastline is home to a bounty of marine life so when on the coast, be sure to eat seafood while it’s at its freshest. Fried baby octopus, king prawns and fragrant, seafood stew are great options.

3. Feijoada

This stew of beans and beef is Brazil’s national dish, and reflects its rich immigrant history. The flavors and style are a mix of African, Indian and Portuguese food traditions, making it a direct culinary link to Brazil’s past.

4. Caipirinha

This refreshing cocktail made from cachaca (a spirit derived from sugar cane), sugar, crushed ice and lime is the Brazilian national drink, and the perfect accompaniment to a beachside sunset.

Brazil has plenty of tropical fruits and berries – so for a quick snack, head to the markets and buy fresh bananas, limes, oranges, guava, jackfruit and acai berries.

Geography and environment

Being the fifth largest country in the world, Brazil shares land borders with many other countries including   Venezuela , Guyana,   Colombia ,   Peru ,   Bolivia , Paraguay,   Argentina , Uruguay, Suriname and French Guiana. Home to many different landscapes and ecosystems, Brazil’s natural environment is one of the most famous in the world. From the steamy tropical rainforest that surrounds the Amazon River and the swirling torrents of white water at Iguazu Falls, to the stunning beaches, reefs and islands of the coast, Brazil is certainly blessed with the very best of Mother Nature. Home to many of the world's most rare and endangered species, travelers will be able to see the full spectrum of colorful bird life, curious mammals, gigantic snakes and unique marine life.

With such a large population, Brazil’s major cities are busy, crowded and chaotic. It can take some getting used to, but once you’re working with the flow of the Brazilian way of life, you’ll begin to enjoy the pace. With a widening gap between the rich and the poor, housing can vary from large mansions in upscale neighborhoods and modern apartments right in the heart of the city, to humble tin sheds in the sprawling favelas. In some ways, Brazil’s major cities are full of contrasts but the universal appeal of partying, dancing and drinking seems to cross all cultural and social barriers.

History and government

Early history.

Indigenous tribes inhabited Brazil for centuries before the arrival of the first European settlers from Portugal in the 1500s. Colonization brought agriculture and crop growing to Brazil, resulting in extensive land clearing which dispossessed much of the indigenous population. The growing of sugar cane resulted in an influx of new residents, mainly slaves who brought rich African traditions with them. Remnants of this can still be seen in much of today’s music, dance and food. By the 19th century, coffee had taken the place of sugar as Brazil’s most valuable crop. The increase in coffee production brought a new wave of migrants to Brazil, mainly from Europe, and Brazil’s economy continued to flourish until the military coup of 1889.

Recent history

Brazil’s more recently history has also been characterized by wide spread immigration – especially during and after World War II - with large numbers of Jewish people choosing to flee persecution to live in Brazil, as well as significant numbers of people from the Middle East and other European countries.

In 1989, Brazil held its first democratic election in almost 30 years after decades of military rule. More recently, a stable government has resulted in increased economic prosperity, although many of Brazil’s residents are still impoverished, living well below the poverty line.

Top 10 beach spots of Brazil

1. praia do rosa.

The big surf and relaxed vibe of this hip holiday haven in Southern Brazil makes it a firm favorite with visitors and locals alike. Praia do Rosa manages to balance development with tradition - elegant small-scale hotels and eco-lodges provide the perfect place to rest after hiking, whale watching or surfing.

The cosmopolitan charms of this world-famous beach make it popular with people from all walks of life. Expect to see enthusiastic travelers, smug millionaires, bohemian artists and indifferent locals all enjoying Ipanema’s magnetic magic.

3. Jericoacoara

Far away from the showy extravagance of Rio lies this secluded spot only accessible by 4x4. Strictly protected from overdevelopment, the slow pace suits the windsurfers and kite surfers who prefer to get their thrills from the ocean's wild tides.

4. Lopes Mendes

This beach, located on the island of Ilha Grande, is considered one of Brazil’s best. The killer combination of fine white sand, great waves and clear, blue water guarantee perfect conditions for swimming, surfing and sun-worshipping.

5. Canoa Quebrada

This mellow hippie haven boasts stunning sand dunes and a deep blue-green sea. Horse riding on the dunes at sunset or cruising the coast on an old fishing boat are great ways to make the most of this picture perfect piece of Brazil.

Put on the world map by Bridget Bardot back in the 1960s, Buzios is the epitome of Brazilian sophistication. The designer boutiques, glam hotels and cool bars attract the celebrity jet set – but it’s the beautiful bays and beaches that are the true superstars of Buzios.

7. Copacabana

One of the world’s most famous urban beaches, Copacabana, is a top spot to indulge in a bit of people watching. Watch an eclectic mix of people play football, work on their tans and strut their stuff on this busy meeting spot that attracts all walks of life.

8. Praia da Mole

Soft white sand for lazing in the sun and a year-round supply of waves for surfing make this beach in Florianopolis a top pick. Paragliding, wakeboarding and other water sports provide more thrills, while the nearby bars and clubs ensure good times when the sun goes down.

9. Maragogi

Found on the Coral Coast of Brazil, Maragogi’s calm waters offer some respite from the big breaks found on many other Brazilian beaches. Colorful offshore reefs make snorkeling or scuba diving a must for visitors looking for aquatic adventures.

10. Tambaba

One for the free spirits of the world, Brazil’s only official nudist beach is flanked by steep, dramatic cliffs and dotted with swaying coconut palms. Choose to get cheeky and take advantage of lying on Brazil’s only sanctioned nudist beach in all your glory, or keep your kit on and stick to the “non-naturist” side.

Brazil’s two largest cities – Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo – offer a wide range of shopping opportunities, from high-end designer shops to independent boutiques and everything in between. Every mid-sized city will have at least one ‘shopping’ (what Brazilians call their shopping malls), but as you move to more rural and remote areas, your best bet is the local market.

Shopping tips in Rio

Peddlers roam Rio’s beaches offering an enormous range of items including footballs, bathing suits and jewelry. Be aware that the price might be good but the quality likely isn’t. For better quality bikinis and swim trunks, consider heading to Blue Man, Brazil’s most successful beachwear label. Or visit Barra Shopping, one of the largest malls in South America, which boasts more than 570 stores, a movie theatre, a bowling alley and a range of restaurants and bars. Rio also hosts a number of popular markets including the Hippie Fair in Ipanema, where more than 700 vendors sell one-of-a-kind jewelry, clothing, leather shoes, paintings and gourmet goods each Sunday. Like many markets, bargaining is accepted.

Responsible travel tip

You may come across goods made from the skins of protected species (such as reptiles or wild cats). Keeping with Intrepid’s commitment to responsible travel, please refrain from supporting any business that exploit or abuse endangered animals.

Festivals and events in Brazil

Rio carnival.

Colorful, raucous and hedonistic, there’s a reason Rio’s Carnival is one of the best-known parties in the world. The parade of elaborate floats and colorful, bejeweled dancers in barely-there costumes dancing to samba may be the main event, but the revelry begins a whole month before. Each February in the lead up to Lent, the caipirinhas are free-flowing as clubs hold glitzy parties and bandas (street parties also called blocos) take over the streets.

Parintins Folklore Festival (Bumba-mei-boi)

An annual spectacle that commemorates a legend about a pregnant woman’s craving for bull tongue, the murder of a bull to satisfy said craving, and the bull’s magical resurrection. Two teams retell the myth and attempt to outdo each other using flamboyant song and dance routines, colorful costumes and giant floats. Spectators cheer and moo to performances at this three-day June celebration.

Festa Junina

This nationwide festival held each June celebrates saints John the Baptist, Anthony and Peter, but celebrations in the north-east take on a distinctly country flair. People flock to rural fairs wearing straw hats and plaid shirts to feast on corn and sweet treats, play games and dance the quadrilha (similar to a square dance).

Rio New Year’s Eve

Join two million revelers decked in white at Copacabana beach for a unique New Year’s celebration. Before the concerts and massive fireworks display begins, Candomble worshippers (an Afro-Brazilian religion) push boats filled with flowers and other offerings into the sea in exchange for safe sailing in the upcoming year.

What travelers say about their trips to Brazil

Travel tips for trips to brazil.

As the largest country in all of  Latin America , Brazil offers something to satisfy nearly every interest. Here are a few experiences to consider when browsing our trips to Brazil.

  • Experience Carnival in Rio de Janeiro.  In late-February and early March each year, visitors and cariocas (residents of Rio) alike take to the streets of Rio de Janeiro for colorful, over-the-top carnival. The celebrations bring together the Catholic tradition and African-influenced samba music and dance. Around 5 million people celebrate carnival in Rio, making it one of the largest carnival celebrations in the world.
  • Explore modern architecture.  Modern architecture is an important part of Brazil’s cultural heritage. Oscar Niemeyer, a native of Brazil, is the country’s most famous and prolific Modernist architect. During your free time on tour in Rio, check out the Niemeyer-designed Niterói Contemporary Art Museum. (Headed to São Paulo on an independent pre- or post-tour stay or on a  Customized Tour of Brazil? Niemeyer standouts in that city include the wave-shaped Copan residential building, and the Ibirapuera Auditorium.) Another Modernist marvel in Rio is the Edgar Fonseca-designed Metropolitana Cathedral.
  • Visit a samba school.  Fast-moving, foot-shuffling, and highly rhythmic, samba—a style of both music and dance—is wildly popular throughout Brazil. Samba draws locals and travelers alike to nightclubs and live music venues, and it’s performed atop larger-than-life floats and in city streets during carnival. When you travel to Brazil with us on tour, you can visit a samba school for a demonstration and lesson.
  • Take in a soccer match.  Soccer, or futebol, as it’s known locally, is by far one of the most popular sports in Brazil. (The country is the birthplace of Pele, one of the most legendary athletes to ever play the game.) Take in a televised match—and cheer alongside local fans—at a sports bar.
  • Explore the Pantanal.  At 42 million acres, the Pantanal, which lies north of Iguazú Falls, is the world’s largest tropical wetland. Visits to the Pantanal aren’t included on itineraries for our Brazil trips, but travelers who want to see the area’s wildlife in person can ask our staff for help planning a pre- or post-tour stay in the area, or a Customized Tour of Brazil.

Happily, there’s a case to be made for planning trips to Brazil any time of year thanks to the country’s year-round warmth and its tropical climate. Here are some general weather and climate tips by region in case you’re thinking of booking one of our Brazil tour packages but aren’t sure when to go.

  • In general, the warmest months in Brazil are from November through March .
  • June and July can bring afternoon showers to the country’s northeastern coast.
  • If you’re heading to the Pantanal on an independent pre- or post-tour stay or on a Customized Tour, consider trips to Brazil that run between the drier months of April and October , or during rainier, more humid months for unique wildlife-viewing opportunities.
  • If your goal is to see Iguazú Falls at their fullest, consider guided tours of Brazil that run between November and March , as these months see the most rainfall. (If you’d rather experience the falls with fewer people around, consider Brazil tours during drier off-season months.)

It would take multiple trips to Brazil to see all the country’s worthy attractions. Here are a few highlights not to miss:

  • Christ the Redeemer.  Standing 98 feet tall and perched atop a 26-foot-high base, this iconic statue of Jesus Christ is the largest Art Deco sculpture in the world. Find it, plus stunning views of the city and Guanabara Bay, at the summit of Mount Corcovado in Rio de Janeiro’s Tijuca National Park.
  • Sugarloaf Mountain.  For the best bird’s-eye views of Rio, ride a cable car to the top of this steep mountain, which lies at the mouth of Guanabara Bay in Rio de Janeiro and soars nearly 1,300 feet in height.
  • Copacabana Beach.  Head to this famous beach in Rio, and the neighborhood that surrounds it, for swimming, sunning, music, beach volleyball and soccer, people-watching, bar hopping, and plenty more extrovert-friendly activity.
  • Ipanema Beach.  Just south of Copacabana, the trendy Ipanema district and its jaw-droppingly beautiful beach are also popular among travelers, but the atmosphere here tends to be quieter and more laid-back. Beaches like Ipanema and Copacabana are among the reasons Brazil is one of our top tropical destinations to visit on tour .
  • Iguazú  Falls: Nature lovers booking trips to Brazil won’t want to miss a visit to this natural wonder, which straddles the border between Argentina and southwestern Brazil. It comprises more than 275 breathtaking cascades.
  • The Amazon:  This vast and vital rainforest blankets more than half of Brazil and is a dream destination for travelers who want to spot wildlife on their tours of Brazil.

Whichever one of our Brazil tours you’re looking to book, be sure to add these items to your packing list.

  • Comfortable and secure walking shoes . Our Brazil tours include time in both urban and natural environments. Cushioned, comfortable shoes will come in handy for walking tours of Rio. For wetter areas, like Iguazú Falls, skip the slides and flip-flops. Instead, choose shoes that are sure to stay on your feet.
  • Sun protection . The sun can be strong in Brazil year-round, so protect your skin with a brimmed hat, sunglasses, loose, lightweight pants, long-sleeve shirts, and waterproof SPF.
  • Insect repellent . Brazil’s climate is tropical, which means you’re likely to encounter a few pesky mosquitos and other bugs when you’re on tour. Bring a bottle of bug spray to keep them at bay.
  • Your favorite camera . From Iguazú’s rushing waterfalls to Rio’s breathtaking, beach-meets-city landscape, our Brazil tours offer plenty of jaw-dropping photo ops.
  • Light layers . Days in Brazil can be hot and sunny, and nights along the coast can be breezy and cool. Having layers handy will give you just-right options for all scenarios.
  • A minimalist mindset . Our advice to travelers on trips to Brazil: Leave valuable jewelry at home. Rio is a big, busy city, and conditions at Iguazú can be very wet. Eliminate the risk of losing precious pieces by leaving them at home.

Brazilian cuisine is influenced by both European and African cultures and varies from region to region. Here are a few tasty dishes to try:

  • Pão de queijo . We bet you won’t be able to have just one of these bite-size, cheesy rolls. Made with tapioca flour, they’re popular for snacking and for breakfast—and they’re downright addictive.
  • Fresh fruit.  Thanks to its tropical climate, Brazil grows some of the most delicious and colorful fruit—including several types you probably haven’t seen before—on earth. A few to look for: açaí, umbu, guava, cerrado pear, mapati, and sweetsop.
  • Barbecued meat.  In Brazil, barbecue is a way of life. At churrascarias, or barbecue restaurants, throughout the country, roving servers drop pieces of perfectly cooked meats straight from skewers onto patrons’ plates.
  • Moqueca.  This beloved fish stew, whose name is pronounced moo-KEK-a*,* is served from a hot clay pot and can include ingredients such as coconut milk, rice, farofa (toasted manioc flour), and other types of seafood.
  • Feijoada.  Widely considered Brazil’s national dish, this slow-cooking bean-and-meat stew is typically served over rice. To enjoy it like a local, order yours along with a Caipirinha, or another cocktail made with cachaça.
  • Caipirinha . It’s not a dish, we know, but no trip to Brazil would be complete without trying the country’s national cocktail. The refreshing sipper is made with sugar, fresh lime juice, and cachaça—a rum-like Brazilian spirit made from sugar cane juice.

Of course, there are exceptions, but Brazilians tend to be vivacious and outgoing. Don’t be afraid to embrace that energy. If there’s any place on Earth to step out of your shell, this is it.

Although Brazilians are also hospitable, English isn’t spoken as widely or readily as it is in some other countries, so come prepared with a key Portuguese phrase or two. To say “hello” takes a simple “olá.” If you’re a traveler who identifies as male, say “Obrigado” when you want to thank someone. If you identify as female, say “Obrigada.”  Those rules apply regardless of the gender of the person you’re talking to.

In Brazil, the gap between rich and poor is vast. While visiting Rio on one of our Brazil trips, your Tour Director or local guide will show you around, and explain the history and significance of, one of the favelas, or slums, that lie at the edges of Rio and other major cities, such as São Paulo. Favela communities may lack resources and wealth, but not spirit, as traveler Rick learned while visiting Rio on our  Grand Tour of South America . “I witnessed extremely resourceful and proud locals making a life,” he said of visiting a favela. “The favela we visited, Rocinha, is the largest in Brazil and contained bustling shops, restaurants, and bars, as well as its own network and radio stations.”

We Focus on Sustainability

Good tourism is responsible and adapts to the country and its conditions. Therefore, we decided to champion sustainability as Brazil travel experts and support the project " Salve Floripa " in our home town of Florianópolis. The project promotes awareness for the local environment and seeks to preserve the Atlantic Rainforest and its biodiversity . We support various projects within this initiative, for example the creation of the first ecological map of Florianópolis. For you as a traveler in Brazil, this social commitment has an added value, as the ecological map also provides you with information about hikes or places for water sports. The preservation of nature in Ilha de Santa Catarina is particularly close to our hearts. Therefore, on World Environment Day on June 5th, we actively support beach maintenance in Barra da Lagoa. If you want to experience the project up close, we have attractive travel packages in and around Florianópolis for you!

Personal Recommendation From Our Team

We have grown particularly fond of the small and rather unknown state of Santa Catarina in the South of Brazil, which we have made our new home. Santa Catarina, with its capital city of Florianópolis, offers beautiful landscapes, fantastic beaches and an unimaginable variety of activities for your vacation. Small romantic fishing villages, secluded bays, white dream beaches, the Atlantic Rainforest and untouched canyons offer the best conditions for varied tours in Brazil. Discover with us the wondrous South of Brazil, hardly known outside of the country until now, and enchant your senses with its beauty and warm people!

About Brazil

Brazil is the largest country in South and Central America and the fifth largest in the world. Because of its size, it is a very diverse country in many aspects. The terrain includes mountains, hills, plains, rainforests and scrublands. The population of Brazil is a melting pot of races, including indigenous people, African and European, with the official language spoken being Portuguese. This variety is reflected in the food , architecture, music and culture of the country.

It is this diversity of places, people and traditions that make Brazil such an unforgettable place to visit. It is certainly known for its music and its fanatic interest in soccer. Musically, it has produced the Samba, the Bossa Nova, the Forro (both the music and dance) and the Capoeira (which involves dancing and martial arts). Brazil’s soccer team has won the World Cup five times and plays in the world’s largest soccer stadium located in Rio .

What are the top cities to visit on a Brazil vacation?

  • Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro is known for its breathtaking and stunning landscapes as well as its excellent and popular beaches. It is Brazil’s second-largest city, the inhabitants of which are known as Cariocas. It has a laid-back beach culture which can be experienced at Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon and Sao Conrado, all well known beaches. But beaches are not all that Rio has to offer. The most amazing sights can be seen from the top of the large hill known as Corcovado, dominated by the statue of Christ the Redeemer and provides spectacular panoramic views. Sugarloaf Mountain, closer to the city, also provides beautiful views of the landscape; the view at sunset being exceptional. There are many other aspects to get excited about here on Brazil tours. One is the annual Carnival where the Cariocas display not only their enthusiasm for life but also their colourful costumes and rhythmic music.

Brazil's capital city, Brasília, was carved out of the jungles and completed in less than three years in 1960 when it became a showpiece of city planning and avant-garde architecture. Without the usual mix of residential and business districts, the entire government section of Brasilia is composed of major architectural highlights. These include the presidential palace, the Supreme Court and the two sharply contrasting congress buildings, plus the Historical Museum of Brasília and the Pantheon of Freedom designed by Oscar Niemeyer. The Brasilia TV Tower is a good place to get an interesting view of the city with its observation deck.

The upper town of Salvador , Brazil's former colonial capital and principal port for slaves arriving from Africa, is a UNESCO World Heritage site due to its exceptional collection of 17th and 18th Century colonial buildings, the finest in South America . Called the Pelourinho, this old quarter is where you will find Salvador's most beautiful churches and monasteries built at a time when Brazil was the source of Portugal's riches and gold was lavished on the colony's religious buildings. The finest and most opulent of the city's churches is Sao Francisco built in the early 1700s and filled with intricate carvings covered in gold. The upper and lower towns are linked by steep streets and a number of elevators and a funicular which has become a landmark in Salvador..

Manaus is a sprawling city in the heart of the Amazon region with a population of around 2 million. It is a busy port with an exciting nightlife. The ornate renaissance style Opera House built in 1896 is an interesting landmark. It is from Manaus that one can take a short cruise down the Amazon to see the “Meeting of the Waters” where two important tributaries of the Amazon collide. Not something to be missed on a Brazil tour.

For more information on Manaus, click here

Recife and Fortaleza

Recife , located in the very north of the country, is known as “the Brazilian Venice” due to the many waterways that meander through the heart of the city. It boasts one of the world’s best urban beaches. It is also a city of interesting churches and has an abundance of museums and art galleries. Fortaleza , the fifth largest city in Brazil is also blessed with attractive beaches.

For more information on Recife and Fortaleza , click here

Ouro Preto is the capital of the state of Minas Gerais. It had its heyday during the colonial period which is evident from the interiors of the churches in Ouro Preto. The entire walls are awash in gold along with diamonds from the mines surrounding the city in the 17th and 18th centuries. Ouro Preto has steep narrow streets lined by gracious colonial mansions, white churches and a mountain backdrop setting. The entire town is so rich in colonial architecture that Ouro Preto has been named a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Top things to do on a trip to Brazil

  • Iguassu Falls

Iguassu Falls is located in the very south of Brazil. Being taller than Niagara Falls and twice as wide, it is an amazing spectacle to visit while on a Brazil vacation. The view from the Brazilian side is the most panoramic. There are walkways along the canyon that offer beautiful views, as well as helicopter rides over the falls. The light is at its best in the morning.

For more information on Iguassu Falls, click here

The Amazon River, Jungle, and Rainforest

The Amazon Rainforest accounts for more than half of the world’s remaining forests and 20 percent of the world’s oxygen. One in 10 known species in the world can be found in the Amazon r egion, home to around 2.5 million insect species, tens of thousands of plants, and thousands of birds and mammals. Many areas in the jungle are difficult to get to and some are still unexplored. The villages along the river or in the jungle are mostly untouched by modern lifestyles. The people stick to traditional ways of living. In these villages, you will find medicine men, healers, shaman, and witch doctors. On Brazil vacations, you can take a cruise starting from Manaus . Situated in the heart of the rainforest, Manaus is the largest city in the Brazilian Amazon and is located on the Rio Negro a few miles before it meets the Rio Solimoes to form the Amazon River, properly called the “Meeting of the Waters.” This will be one of the highlights on your cruise.

Wildlife and Nature

The Pantanal is the world’s largest wetland consisting of forests, lakes, and grasslands. It also spreads over into Paraguay and Bolivia. The flooded marshlands teem with everything from piranhas to jaguars and crocodiles. This is a place for nature lovers. The region’s protected areas include the Pantanal Matogrossense National Park and three private nature reserves where you can have the opportunity to view wildlife go on safari, go swimming and take canoe trips. The Pantanal is home to approximately 3500 known plant species, with more being discovered on a regular basis.

Individual Brazil vacations shaped around your passions

The vivacious dancers and floats of Rio de Janeiro’s Carnival seem to embody Brazil’s verve and swagger. At the other extreme, there are the unspoiled waterworlds of the Amazon basin and the Pantanal , where all kinds of wildlife flourish in quiet, barely inhabited pockets. Our specialists have a great affection for this cavernous, contradictory country. They’re enthusiastic about showing you its many incarnations on a Brazil vacation, perhaps taking you from the undeveloped beaches of the Northeast Coast to the bookish colonial town of Paraty in the south.

We can point you toward experiences that only a vacation to Brazil can offer: you might not expect to find an opera house on the edge of the rainforest, but it exists in Manaus . And, where else can you see capoeiristas refining their dexterous dance-come-martial-art on beaches at sunset — or catch spontaneous bursts of samba drumming in the middle of a busy street?

Useful information for planning your vacation in Brazil

The official language of Brazil is Portuguese, but there are many Indigenous languages spoken across the country. English is spoken in larger cities and the main visitor destinations.

The currency of Brazil is the real (R$ or BRL). ATMs are widely available, and most machines take all credit cards, as well as Cirrus and Plus cards. Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted, as are bank debit cards.

In Brazil, you should try the traditional feijoada (meat stew with garlic and black beans), moqueca (fish stew made in a clay pot), and pão de queijo (cheesy bread rolls). Meat lovers should seek out Brazil’s churrascarias, steakhouses where the adoration of barbecued meats reaches feast-like proportions.

As you travel, you’ll find lots of regional variations in the food served, as well as plenty of tropical fruits such as cupuacu (a large, chocolatey fruit), açaí (hard, purple berries), and jaboticaba (tree grapes). Other sweet treats to look out for include brigadeiros (Brazilian chocolate truffles) and quindim (coconut egg custard).

To drink, try cachaça, a sugar-cane rum best enjoyed in a caipirinha, a cocktail with lime, sugar, and ice.

A 10% service charge is added to the total in most Brazilian restaurants so no additional tip is necessary unless you feel the service was exceptional. If no service charge has been added, a tip of 10% will be appreciated. Drivers and guides will also appreciate a tip. Your specialist can advise on appropriate amounts closer to your travel dates.

For the latest travel advice for Brazil, including entry requirements, health information, and the safety and security situation, please refer to the State Department website .

From sun-drenched beaches to historic cities, thundering waterfalls, and the glories of the Amazon Rainforest, Brazil offers history, culture, wildlife, and relaxation in equal measure. In Rio, you can see the towering statue of Christ the Redeemer, take a cycling tour of Copacabana and Ipanema beaches , visit the favelas, or join the exuberant Carnaval celebrations.

You could stay in a stylish Amazon jungle lodge  while monkeys hoot and whoop, explore the wildlife-filled wetlands of the Pantanal by canoe, take a buggy ride across the towering sand dunes  near Natal, or stand in the mist of the cascading Iguaçu Falls .

The legacy of the Portuguese is everywhere, and a walking tour of one of Brazil’s historic cities  brings this period of history to life. Alternatively, you could tour the Maracanã football stadium (which opened in 1950 to host the FIFA world cup), or explore architect Oscar Neimeyer’s crowing glory, the modernist city of Brasília .

Brazil has a wealth of places to stay from luxury hotels to beach resorts, family-run guesthouses, and historic boutique hotels. In the cities, you’ll find chic and stylish urban retreats , historic homes  turned into charming small hotels, and boutique hotels  set in grand mansions.

Brazil’s pousadas (guesthouses) are often set in historic buildings, but can vary greatly in size and character from sleek and stylish small hotels  to waterfront escapes  set in lush gardens.

Along the coast, you can stay in a private beachfront villa  or an eco-resort  offering water sports, riding, and rowing, while in the Amazon or Pantanal, you could stay in a simple floating hotel  or opt for an exclusive lodge  with just four rooms and individual attention.

For more ideas and to start planning your trip, take a look at our collection of places to stay in Brazil .

Rio, Iguaçu Falls, the Pantanal, Salvador, and the Green Coast are some of Brazil’s key destinations. Brazil, however, is larger than the contiguous United States and you’ll spend a lot of time flying if you’re hoping to see them all in one trip.

Most visitors arrive in Rio de Janeiro  and enjoy a few days exploring before heading inland to Iguaçu Falls , the Pantanal , or the Amazon Rainforest , before relaxing on the white-sand beaches and exploring the tropical forests of the Green Coast  where you can visit the historic town of Paraty and the sun-kissed shores of Ilha Grande.

To the north, you can explore the wonderfully historic city of Salvador  or the Amazonian capital Manaus  before discovering the towering sand dunes at Lençóis Maranhenses National Park , relaxing on the beach in Olinda, or snorkelling in crystalline waters in Fernando de Noronha .

The Pantanal is the best place to see wildlife in Brazil. An area of seasonally flooded wetlands, the Pantanal  is home to wildlife similar to that of the Amazon basin but it’s much easier to spot than in the dense jungle. Here, you can see capybaras and caimans relaxing in the sun, large jabiru storks surveying the grasslands, and anacondas lurking in the shadows.

Although jaguars are always elusive, there are some specialist lodges here that give you a good chance of spotting these graceful big cats. Meanwhile, monkeys and marmosets swing through the trees, giant anteaters snuffle in the leaves, armadillos amble along, and river otters glide through the water, while brightly hued toucans, macaws, and parrots flit overhead.

It takes around ten hours to fly from the East Coast of the US to Brazil, and around 12 hours from the West Coast.

Brazil has four different time zones ranging from UTC-2 hours to UTC-5 hours. Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Brasilia are all at UTC-3 hours. Daylight Savings Time isn’t observed in Brazil.

The best way to get around in Brazil is by road and by air. The country’s vast size means that distances between sights can be great, and it may be best to try and concentrate on just one part of the country such as the south or northeast, combining road travel with a private driver-guide and one or two internal flights.

If you’re hoping to see as much as possible in one trip and take in highlights such as Rio, Iguaçu, the Amazon, and Salvador, you’ll need to fly between destinations.

US citizens don’t need a visa to visit Brazil for stays of up to 90 days.  Citizens of other countries should check entry requirements as a visa may be required.

Speak to your doctor about vaccine advice for Brazil and ensure you’re up to date with routine vaccinations at home. You can also check the suggested vaccinations for Brazil on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website .

Your passport should be valid for six months beyond your date of departure from Brazil and have at least one blank page.

Visitors may find one of several distinct climates in Brazil, depending on where they travel. Along Brazil’s northeastern coast, temperatures are mild year-round, rarely dipping below 75F. The summer rains, usually lasting three to four months, arrive as early as April here, consisting mostly of quick showers. Rio de Janeiro is pleasant year-round with slightly cooler winters than summers. Rio’s rainy season begins as late as October though rains can occur anytime of the year. Further down the coast, temperatures are more variable. Visitors will experience the most temperature variation between seasons in the south, with hot humid summers December to March and cooler temperatures in the evenings and during winter from June to August. In the country’s interior, the hottest, wettest weather occurs from December to March. So vast is the Amazon Rainforest that its climate varies by sub-region. The north is rainy most of the time with a little less rain from June to December. In Amazon areas further south, especially around the largest population centers where there are fewer trees, temperatures are more variable with distinctly drier months between August and October.

*Year Round Temperatures in °F, Rainfall in Inches **The summer high season in Rio is December to March. Off-season (May-October) is also a good option since Rio’s winter temperatures stay around the 70sº F/20sº C, dipping occasionally below 60ºF/15ºC. Rainy days are unpredictable andcan happen even in the high season.

*Year Round Temperatures in °F, Rainfall in Inches **For the central Amazon region (Manaus) the average daytime temperature in the rainy season is in the mid-80º F (30º C), with a fall of 10 to 20º F (7 to 12º C) at night. In the dry season the average temperatures are 5º F (2-3º C) higher. Although recipitation varies significantly within the Amazon due to various factors (e.g. altitude) it is usual to consider two distinct periods: the rainy season, and the dry season. In the central zone (Manaus) the rainy season begins in December and lasts until mid-May.

*Year Round Temperatures in °F, Rainfall in Inches **The rainy season lasts from December to March. The intermediary seasons are April-June and October-November. During the rainy season rain storms can be intense, the temperature is high and the Pantanal is subject to flooding. This isn’t the best period to visit Pantanal, particularly January and February. It’s much better to visit the Pantanal in the dry and intermediary seasons.

*Year Round Temperatures in °F, Rainfall in Inches **Salvador, Fortaleza, Recife and nearby resorts (Praia do Forte, Porto Galinhas, Natal, etc.) have agreeable temperatures all year round, rarely dipping below 25ºC (77ºF) and there are very few days hotter than 32 or 33ºC (90ºF). Winter temperatures are just 3-4ºC degrees below the summer averages. In Salvador and Recife the rainy season begins around the beginning of April and lasts three months. At Fortaleza the rain begins a little later. Rain showers usually don’t last enough to spoil your visit to these year-round beach resorts.

*Year Round Temperatures in °F, Rainfall in Inches **March-November could be considered the best time to visit Iguazu Falls but there really isn’t a 'best time'. The high season is in January and February, when most Brazilians and Argentineans are on vacation. It’s a good period to visit Iguazu Falls. But there are downsides, the humidity and the heat are also at their peaks and this is also a crowded period which you might prefer to avoid. If you want to avoid busy periods then avoid Easter time also. May and July are rainy months, though the rain is rarely a problem and the volume of the falls is at its highest.

*Year Round Temperatures in °F, Rainfall in Inches **The coastal city of Florianópolis enjoys a semi-tropical climate, without extreme variations in climate so any time of year is a good time to visit. It just depends upon your preferences. Winters are mild and summers hot with an average of 80% humidity. Rains should be expected from September through March. Mid-winter (June to August) is drier than summer, but anticipate cooler temperatures then as well. That said, even the coldest temperatures brought in by southerly wind will rarely drop below 50 Fahrenheit. The windiest days are most likely during the spring months of September and October for those interested in trying their hand at kiteboarding. The busiest time on the Island is in the summer months from December through mid-March, so those looking for a more peaceful trip should travel during the winter months.

I'm really happy with this trip, Tour Radar pulled through big on my behalf and made it worth it every step of the way. My original plans were canceled because the operator in Brazil flaked right at the 11th hour. Paula from TourRadar.com came up with a plan to save my trip and hooked me up with a way to get day trips done. I still got to do the major tourist spots in Rio and spent New Year's in Paraty which was amazing at minimal cost. The only negative is that I wasn't in a group but honestly I had the time to do things at my place and I did what I wanted...perfection. More than likely I'll be back in Brazil via Tourradar.com

More information about Brazil

The giant of South America and the fifth-largest country in the world, Brazil endures as one of the worlds most lusted-after and popular travel destinations. Brazil holidays open up a world of luscious beaches, tropical Amazon rainforests, and upbeat Samba rhythms.

Culture-filled, melting-pot urban centers, such as the capital, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo offer the traveler an insight into modern life in Brazil , with all the usual hustle and bustle you’d imagine alongside hearty nightlife and eclectic architecture.

On the other hand, a Brazil tour is incomplete without contemplating the natural wonders of the country, such as the incredible Iguazu Falls and the immense Amazon basin, filled with exotic wildlife. Brazil has a vast Atlantic coastline and shares borders with all other South American countries except for Ecuador and Chile.

This close proximity to its neighbors has created the vibrant culture that Brazil is so famed for. The only Portuguese-speaking nation in the Americas , Brazil is unique in every way, and so diverse that you might struggle to fit all the sights into a single trip! A package tour of Brazil is the best way to make the most of your travel time and gain a good overview of the country’s sights and attractions. So grab your dancing shoes and head to the land of Carnival , where the rhythm of Samba music is sure to lift your mood and bring you closer to the warm hospitality of the locals.

History of Brazil

Prior to the arrival of Portuguese explorer, Pedro Alvares Cabral in 1500 , who claimed the territory of modern-day Brazil for the Portuguese Empire , Brazil was home to a number of diverse indigenous peoples, estimated to be composed of around 200 different tribes and nations. Colonization followed, along with 200 years of conflict and near-constant wars between the colonists and indigenous groups.

Unlike the ruins found in countries such as Peru and Bolivia, the ancient culture of the indigenous groups are instead preserved in the isolated communities of the Amazon ; witnessing the practices of these unique communities is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity during a trip to Brazil .

Sugar plantations and gold mining were the most popular and profitable industries during the age of Portuguese rule, and the discovery of gold attracted many new settlers from Portugal and its colonies around the world, perpetuating the age-old legend of ‘El Dorado’. The hunt for more natural resources, preferably shiny ones, expanded the borders of Brazil to its modern-day size.

Brazil declared independence in 1822 , under Prince Pedro , who was famed for his military might as three international wars, resulting in victories for Brazil, were won during his reign. In 1889 , Brazil transformed into an independent republic following a military coup. It was not until more than 100 years later in 1985 that a democratic system was established, following an oppressive century of military dictatorship. Visitors who choose Brazil holiday packages today visit a country that is considered a major global power and is known for its rich history and natural beauty, preserved in its plentiful UNESCO sites.

Nature in Brazil

Natural attractions are at the heart of all Brazil vacations. A geographically diverse country with landscapes ranging from tropical palm-fringed beaches to mountainous highlands and the mysterious, wildlife-rich Amazon , Brazil is the perfect adventure travel destination. Perhaps the most iconic sight is the magical Iguazu Falls , an immense border-spanning waterfall system, shared with Argentina.

Visitors to the Brazilian side of the Iguazu Falls can get up close to the thundering waters on well-placed walk-ways and really gauge the scale of this bucket-list favorite.

Over 40% of the total land area of Brazil is in the Amazon rainforest, the most biodiverse place on earth. Eco-lodges give visitors, on a trip to the Amazon , the chance to spend the night surrounded by an orchestra of animals sounds and to get close to the diverse wildlife and black, mystical waters of the Amazon River , home to animals as unique as the pink Amazon dolphin ! Pumas and jaguars are the most iconic inhabitants of the Amazon.

An altogether different kind of environment, the dreamy archipelago of Fernando de Noronha , 200 miles off the coast of Brazil is filled with paradise beaches and crystalline waters, perfect for dolphin watching, snorkeling, and diving. These idyllic islands are a must-visit stop for beach-lovers on a tour of Brazil. Another natural paradise, the Pantanal wetlands of west Brazil is the largest wetland in the world and home to diverse bird and animal life.

Culture in Brazil

Although a predominantly western-style culture, Brazil has preserved many of its more ancient traditions and culture. As a Portuguese colony for more than three centuries, the legacy of this period is evident in many parts of everyday life such as the language, national cuisine and also in the architecture, particularly in the quaint city of Salvador de Bahia and the gorgeous historic town of Paratay , close to Rio.

Brazil is famed for its love of a good fiesta , the most famous of which, the Rio Carnaval , attracts worldwide attention, although Carnaval is celebrated throughout the country in the 46 days leading up to Easter every year.

Music is at the heart of Brazilian culture, and the country has been the birthplace of many different popular genres and styles, such as the sultry Samba , Choro and Forro . If you spend an evening out in the streets of Rio , or any other major city, during a tour of Brazil, you’re sure to see the prevalence and popularity of these musical delights, often accompanied by cheerful dancing.

Of course, football is another national treasure, with Brazil having produced countless prestigious football players, such as Pele, Ronaldinho, Kaka,  and Neymar, and the national team is one of the best in the world. On a trip to Brazil, you’re sure to see youngsters having a kick-about almost everywhere!

Succumb to the rhythm of Samba music and set off on an adventure to Brazil , the giant of South America . From the devastating beauty of the Iguazu Falls to the tropical treasures of the Amazon , a vacation in Brazil is the bucket-list adventure you’ve always dreamed of!

Experiences of a lifetime

From the eastern coast of Brazil to Argentina and the western coast of Chile, explore the essence of each destination with unique travel experiences that bring you to the best each country has to offer.

Buenos aires' teatro colón, behind-the-scenes at the teatro colón opera house.

Acoustically considered among the five best concert venues in the world (alongside concert halls in Vienna, Berlin, Amsterdam and Boston's Symphony Hall), Buenos Aires' current, seven-tiered Teatro Colón opera house opened in 1908 with a production of Verdi's "Aida" – replacing a previous incarnation that was in operation in Argentina's capital from 1857 until 1888. You'll enjoy a privately guided, behind-the-scenes tour of this Argentine gem – which emerged in 2010 from a three-year, $100 million renovation – including its magnificent central chandelier, exquisite stained glass, allegorical ceiling frescoes, marble staircases and opulent Gold Room.

Iguazú Falls from both sides of the border

Experience the "great waters" of iguazú.

Sixty-five feet taller than Niagara Falls and twice as wide, Iguazú Falls – a UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site – was also named one of the "New Seven Wonders of Nature" by the New Seven Wonders of the World Foundation. In fact, you have to visit two countries to get a complete look at this natural wonder; its 275 cascades are spread in a horseshoe shape over nearly two miles of the Iguazú River, straddling the borders of Argentina and Brazil.

Belmond Copacabana Palace

Art deco elegance on rio's iconic copacabana beach.

Rio de Janeiro's Art Deco-inspired Belmond Copacabana Palace overlooks the Brazilian city's world-famous Copacabana Beach. Having first opened its doors to a celebrity clientele in 1923, the hotel continues to welcome guests with an impeccable reputation for graciousness and service... offering a host of amenities to ensure a most comfortable stay, including guest rooms featuring original works of art.

The pace of the trip was wonderful and the organization of the logistics of moving between locations was exceptional.

Tauck Travel Protection Product

Effective for plans purchased as of July 1, 2021:

Tauck's Guest Protection

Tauck's Guest Protection provides you with cancellation protection before your journey begins as well as insurance benefits while you are traveling. Guest Protection includes the following:

Cancellation Waiver – Provided by Tauck:

Under Tauck's Cancellation Fee Waiver you can cancel your tour for ANY REASON up to the day before departure and receive a money-back refund (except in Extreme Circumstances*) on the land tour cost, based on your original method of payment.

*Extreme Circumstances:  In the event of an act of God, war (whether declared or undeclared), terrorism, accident, natural disaster, outbreak of disease, or other event or circumstance beyond our control that contributes to or results in cancellation rates above our historical cancellation rates in the absence of such event or occurrence, Tauck reserves the right to issue a credit to you in lieu of a money-back refund, applicable to a future Tauck journey.

Travel Insurance Benefits – Underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company.

  • Trip Cancellation –  If you must cancel your tour due to a covered reason, the plan provides coverage for the amount you paid for your travel arrangements. Since the non-insurance cancellation waiver takes care of the land package cancellation fees already, this benefit reimburses the airfare cancellation charges up to the value of your original airfare purchase.
  • Trip Interruption –  If you have to interrupt your tour for covered reasons, the plan provides reimbursement to catch up to your tour or return home.
  • Travel Delay –  Provides reimbursement for missed, prepaid travel arrangements if you are delayed by a common carrier, natural disaster, unannounced strike, or other reasons as cited in the plan.
  • Medical Expense –  Reimburses covered medical expenses incurred in the event you become injured or sick during your trip.
  • Baggage / Personal Effects Protection –  Provides reimbursement in the event your luggage or personal effects are, lost, stolen, damaged or delayed during your trip.
  • Worldwide Emergency Assistance Services –  Provided by Carefree Travel Assistance; 24-hour emergency telephone assistance hotline for medical and travel related problems.

The cost of Tauck's Guest Protection is: $699  per person

This protection provides insurance coverage that applies only during the covered trip. You may have coverage from other sources that provides you with similar benefits but may be subject to different restrictions depending upon your other coverages. You may wish to compare the terms of this policy with your existing life, health, home and automobile policies. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.

This optional Guest Protection must be requested at time of booking and fee must be included with initial payment. Fees are based on costs as of July 2021, and are subject to change. Details will be provided with written confirmation of your tour reservation. Guest Protection does not protect travel agent commissions. Reimbursements will be made according to original method of payment. The amount of any refund shall be reduced by any recoveries obtained by you from any third parties.

The Guest Protection plan waives cancellation fees outlined below, provided we are notified of cancellation before your tour departs. Tour cancellation fees are waived regardless of reason, without written notice, and Tauck will refund land tour cost.

If You Have to Cancel

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally , you will need a valid passport to enter Chile, Argentina and Brazil, and that passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the completion of travel.  (Please note that although adult passports are valid for a full ten years, children's passports require renewal every five years.)  If you are a United States citizen and do not have a valid passport, please contact the closest U.S. passport agency or consult the U.S. State Department website for detailed information on how to obtain or renew your passport at: www.travel.state.gov .

All non-U.S. citizens should check with the Chilean, Argentinean and Brazilian Embassies or Consulates to determine necessary travel documents.

It is a good idea to carry a photocopy of the photo page of your passport in a place other than with the original, and to leave a copy of all your travel documents with a friend or relative at home.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Besides the checked luggage limitations noted above, you are allowed to bring one piece of carry-on luggage aboard your intra-tour flights, weighing no more than 17 pounds (8 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 43 inches (115 cm).

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Some of the countries visited on this itinerary may require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against certain diseases in order to enter the country. These requirements are subject to frequent change as outbreaks occur and subside in different areas, and it is therefore crucial that you obtain the very latest information on entry requirements as you prepare for your journey.

For the most current information, please consult the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) by clicking here and the World Health Organization (WHO) by clicking here . You may also wish to visit the web sites for the embassies of the countries you will be visiting. Besides providing details on vaccination requirements, these sites can also provide information on vaccinations that may be recommended (but aren't required) and other potential health issues for which no vaccines are available.

Any decisions relating to your health, of course, should not be based solely on information provided by a web site. It is critically important that you consult with your personal physician prior to your journey to obtain any required vaccinations and to review any optional recommendations offered by the CDC or other sources.

Please be sure to discuss your journey with your physician at least four to six weeks in advance of your departure, as certain vaccinations take time to become fully effective. Also, be certain to ask your physician for proof of any vaccinations you receive, and to pack this proof along with your other travel documents in your carry-on luggage (not in your checked luggage).

Researching and complying with vaccination entry requirements for the countries visited on this itinerary is the responsibility of the traveler and not Tauck. Tauck is therefore not responsible for any expenses incurred or disruptions to travel caused by improper or incomplete vaccinations, or by the failure to provide proof of required vaccinations .

If you do not obtain the necessary vaccinations and proper documentation, you may be denied entry into one or more countries, or temporarily quarantined until the necessary vaccinations are administered, or until proper documentation is provided.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot gua

To enjoy this tour's itinerary, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. There is a significant amount of walking on Day 6 during our excursion to Iguazu National Park. The walking is all on metal grated walkways or sidewalks, and there are many steps. You may choose to enjoy all three of the scheduled walks or just take one or two. The first walk, Superior Circuit, is very flat and is approximately 1¼ mi (2 km). The second walk, Devil's Throat, is mostly flat and is approximately ½ mi (.8 km). The final walk, Lower Circuit, has many steps, is very challenging, and is approximately ¾ mi (1.2 km). Total walking is approximately 2½ mi (4 km). Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. The amount of walking you do, however, is at your discretion.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE ON SUPPLEMENTAL OXYGEN AND MOBILITY ISSUES: This Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate oxygen tanks, wheelchairs or motorized scooters. Oxygen tanks are strictly prohibited in many foreign countries on regional flights aboard small aircraft, such as those intra-tour flights featured on this Tauck journey. Likewise, the very limited cargo capacity on such flights prohibits the transport of wheelchairs or motorized scooters.

Guests should also bear in mind that the infrastructure in many foreign countries, particularly in developing countries, often presents severe and even insurmountable challenges for those with walking difficulties or other mobility issues. The responsibility of the Tauck Director is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest. Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it. While drinking water is generally safe at all our hotels, bottled water will be available on motor coaches and boats.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

South America has a wide variety of climates. The principal cities we visit receive very light to moderate rainfall and are warm year-round.

Rio de Janeiro has a tropical climate with hot, humid summers (December to March) and temperate, pleasant winters (June to September). Rain tends to be short intense showers in the summer and long drizzly showers in the winter.

Buenos Aires has a temperate climate (considered as "humid subtropical") with average temperatures in the afternoon ranging from 83 ºF (28 ºC) in January to 57 ºF (14 ºC) in July. Rain can be expected at any time of year.

Santiago has a mild Mediterranean climate: relatively hot dry summers (November to March) with temperatures reaching up to 86 ºF (30 ºC) on the hottest days; winters (June to August) are more humid with cold mornings and with typical maximum daily temperatures of 60 ºF (16 ºC).

To determine current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website, noaa.gov.us, by clicking here .

What To Pack

Your journey through South America is casual. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. During the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations in the Andes and at nights along the shore will require warmer, layered clothing. For the welcome and farewell receptions, casual resort wear is appropriate. It will be cold in the lakes region during October and November, so guests traveling during these months should bring layers including a sweater and a fleece or a warm jacket.

Please leave all expensive or flashy jewelry at home.

Valet laundry service is available at all the hotels on this itinerary.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

We suggest that you pack the following items your journey to South America:

  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks and short-sleeve shirts
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
  • Binoculars (7x50 preferably)
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Lightweight, comfortable yet sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Reusable zipper lock bags/other waterproof bags or daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room or stateroom while traveling

Please refer to the Necessary Gear website at www.necessarygear.com as one option available to you for renting and purchasing apparel, PPEs, and other items appropriate for your journey.

Brazil explored: immersive trips, diamond trails and long-lost tales.

There’s never been more interest in actual, genuine off-the-beaten-path travel than now. More and more tourists are searching out escape from the everyday—trips with fewer people, less (or preferably no) technology, and an opportunity to recalibrate and experience something authentic and life-affirming.

Stepping into the market with an offering that undoubtedly fits that definition is Gift of Go , who have launched an inaugural series of explorations into Brazil’s most remote and extraordinary regions for 2024.

Disappear into one of the planet's most biodiverse and least visited places.

Kicking things off is An Exploration of the Highlands of Brazil . A 14-day, 125-mile journey into the majestic Serra do Espinhaço departing on May 6th, a maximum of eight travelers and 10 expedition crew will trek, horseback ride, boat, bike, bushwack and overland their way across a labyrinth of lost historic trails and backroads in one of the planet’s most ecologically diverse places.

The trip promises Seussian landscapes, colonial villages and quilombos (former slave settlements), white sand beach fringed waterfalls, cola-colored rivers, bubbling hot springs and barely-visited UNESCO World Heritage sites. It will culminate at a famed Vesperata celebration in Diamantina, the UNESCO “city of diamonds.”

Journeys will lead to places of tranquility and solitude and beauty.

Samsung Is Giving Away A Free Galaxy S24 In A New Promotion

Google makes a new sale offer to pixel 8 buyers, the best reading glasses plus expert tips from an ophthalmologist.

The Serra do Espinhaço was once the epicenter of the world’s diamond trade but has been abandoned and largely forgotten about by the outside world for close to 200 years. It’s home to three UNESCO destinations and two globally-renowned biodiversity hotspots in the Brazilian Savanna and Atlantic Rainforest. Yet despite this, its largest conservation unit at the Sempre Vivas National Park receives only a handful of visitors each year, and most of those are from the scientific community. What that effectively means is that, from a tourist perspective, you’ll have the place to yourself.

Experiences are broken up into four chapters. The Serra take visitors on an epic trek through the mountains. The Garden navigates Brazil’s hinterland of big cats and sharp plants, disappearing trails, forsaken ranches and disputed lands by pack-mule and jon-boat. The Sertão brings travelers to the lowlands along miles of open road to festive cow towns and legendary hospitality. Lastly, The Berço is the cradle, dramatic landscapes that lead to tales of hardship and glory and at its end, the slave-built highway that cascades into Diamantina.

Experienced local guides lead the way along often invisible trails.

Gift of Go will lead a collection of curated trips over the year. At 14, 21 and 28 days in length, they are meticulously researched and curated; designed to create deeply immersive, enriching experiences that are as demanding as they are rewarding and that have the power to change how we see the world.

In this sense, Gift of Go is pitching the trips less as vacations and more as immersive stories—more purposeful than recreational, more exhilarating than relaxing. Expect to be challenged by a diverse landscape of cultures, geographies and historic realities through constant immersion and candid, uncurated conversations and interactions with local people.

From highland to lowland, mountain to cradle, guests will hike, ride, bike and bushwack to their ... [+] destination.

In the press release for their first experience, cofounder Eddie Lott notes that, “We are living in the Golden Age of picture-perfect places, carefully-crafted ‘authenticity’, and readily-collectible ‘once-in-a-lifetime' experiences. GOGO trips are different—in our minds, there is simply nothing more compelling, profound, or enriching than experiencing real life in a world far from our own."

Gift of Go slow travel experiences kick off in 2024 on May 6th and run across several months throughout the year. For details, check the 21-day A Diamantine Tale and epic 28-day Diamond/Wild Tales + Lost Trails . A limited number of bespoke itineraries are also available.

Coming off a tie for 21st at the Bupa Championship at Tulum and a tie for third at the Totalplay Championship at Atlas Country Club, the first two PGA TOUR Americas events played in Mexico, Anderson landed in Rio ranked eight on Tour. With his season total improving to 650 after his first win as a pro, he now holds a 98-point lead over José de Jesús Rodríguez of Irapuato, Mexico, who slipped down to second with a tie for 27th in Rio.

“It’s a nice position to be in through three events, but no matter what my standing is, I’m not going to change anything. I’m still going to go about my routine (and) my process the exact same way. Hopefully, I end up in a good position at the right time,” said Anderson of his new stature as the PGA TOUR Americas No. 1 player.

Across 11 rounds played in three starts, the University of San Francisco alum leads PGA TOUR Americas with the most rounds in the 60s (7), most sub-par rounds (8), total eagles (5), and par-3 performance. In addition to those stats, his scoring average of 69.09 is the best among players with at least two starts.

Had Anderson missed his 10-footer for birdie at the last, he would have been involved in a playoff for the title with Ollie Osborne and Conner Godsey of the U.S. As a consolation, each of the runners-up earned 245 Fortinet Cup points to move inside the top 10 in the season-long standings.

A solid driver of the ball on a regular basis, Osborne found additional strength in his putting, which led to an impressive bogey-free week in Rio. “I’ve never done that before, so that was nice. I didn’t drop a single shot, so that was a good feeling,” said the 24-year-old SMU alum who had a very unusual break of 40 hours and 14 minutes between the end of his first round, Thursday, and the beginning of his second, Saturday, because of a weather delay.

Rising to No. 6 through three events in the Fortinet Cup standings, Osborne was especially pleased to realize that he has locked up his position inside the Latin Swing top 60. As such, he is among several players who have already secured exempt status for the 10-event North America swing to be played from May through September.

“It means a lot because I didn’t have any job security after these Latin events," said Osborne. "Now I can play pretty freely and try to get as many points as possible."

With no points after back-to-back missed cuts in Mexico, Godsey bounced back in Rio to put together three rounds of 67-65-66. The 32-year-old closed the final round going birdie-birdie-birdie to charge into an eventual two-way tie for second.

“This was huge,” said Godsey, a native of Alabama trying to make a return to the Korn Ferry Tour, where he last played a full season in 2022. “After missing the cut in the first two tournaments, I got in some really good work the last couple weeks off. I’m happy to have played well this (past) week.”

Godsey makes his 2024 Fortinet Cup Points List debut as number seven, only 20 points behind Osborne.

After its first stop in South America, the PGA TOUR Americas’ Latin Swing continues this week with the 2024 Diners Club Peru Open. The fourth event of the season will be played at Los Inkas Golf Club in Lima, Peru, starting on Thursday.

ASIA Announces 'The Heat Of The Moment' July 2024 U.S. Tour

ASIA has announced "The Heat of The Moment Tour" , headlined by ASIA and also featuring FOCUS , Martin Turner (ex- WISHBONE ASH ) and CURVED AIR and MC'd by artist Roger Dean .

The trek will commence on July 3, 2024 and will incorporate 21 dates across the USA and Canada.

The tour has been masterminded by rock music keyboard legend and original ASIA member Geoff Downes ( BUGGLES , YES ).

"Asia" was the biggest selling album of 1982, No. 1 on Billboard for nine weeks and pioneers of the MTV era. Downes 's brand new iteration of ASIA first began to evolve last summer at the concert held in memory of late lead singer, songwriter and bassist John Wetton ( KING CRIMSON , ROXY MUSIC , URIAH HEEP , WISHBONE ASH , UK , ASIA , JOHN WETTON BAND , ICON ). Downes invited old friend John Mitchell ( IT BITES , FROST, LONELY ROBOT , KINO , JOHN WETTON BAND , ICON ) and newcomer Harry Whitley to join him on stage to celebrate Wetton 's life by performing some of the classic ASIA hits. Such was the uproarious reception to their set, that Downes wondered if something magical was beginning to take shape.

"And so it was that the John Wetton tribute last August really reminded me how much ASIA 's music belongs on the stage," Geoff said. "The response to it all was literally…spine-tingling."

Downes 's new-look ASIA will once again feature Mitchell on guitars and Whitley on lead vocal and bass. The quartet will be made complete by the addition of Virgil Donati ( UK , SOUTHERN SONS , STEVE VAI , ALLAN HOLDSWORTH ) on drums.

Downes continues: "With the addition of Virgil Donati and John Mitchell , two of the finest musicians in the world in their respective classes, this is almost going full circle bearing in mind their previous close collaborations with John W . Completing this circle is also the amazing Harry Whitley who absolutely floored the audience with his incredible vocal interpretation of the ASIA songs that John W and I so lovingly wrote over the years."

The tour will also feature sets from other classic acts FOCUS , Turner and CURVED AIR . All three support acts boast their founder bandleaders and have deservedly attained the status of legend.

FOCUS will release a brand new studio album later in 2024. Led by the indomitable Sir Thijs Van Leer , it features original 1970s drummer Pierre Van Der Linden , plus the virtuoso talents of Menno Gootjes on guitar and Udo Pannekeet on bass.

Martin Turner was lead vocalist, bassist, founding member and creative force behind 1970s rock music behemoth WISHBONE ASH , best known for such classic albums as "Argus" and "Pilgrimage" .

Formed in 1970, CURVED AIR are one of the founders of progressive rock and a retrospective collection of their most influential and ground-breaking material is currently in the planning stages. Sonja Kristina (vocals) and Kirby Gregory (guitar) will treat audiences to an acoustic set featuring some of the band's most memorable musical moments. They will be joined by violinist Grzegorz Gadziomski .

Each performance on the tour will be MC'd by legendary artist Roger Dean . For so many, Dean 's artwork is synonymous with the music of the time and stands to represent the very best of British rock music.

The final word goes to Geoff Downes : "I am convinced that John 's [ Wetton ] spirit is with us as we set out on this new adventure. After all, it is the Year Of The Dragon — just as it was in 1982, when we released our first ASIA album. It's as though it was meant to be. Looking forward to seeing you there, my friends — bring it on!”

Portugal needs to ‘pay the costs’ of slavery and colonialism, says president

Critics of Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa say behind remarks is lack of national recognition that slavery should be discussed in schools

Portugal needs to “pay the costs” of slavery and other colonial-era crimes, the country’s president has said, in a rare instance of a European leader seemingly backing the need for reparations.

Portugal has long grappled with calls by campaigners to address its legacy as the European country with the longest historical involvement in the slave trade. During the span of four centuries, nearly 6 million Africans were kidnapped and forcibly transported across the Atlantic by Portuguese vessels.

Those who managed to survive the voyage were enslaved and forced to toil on plantations in the Americas , mostly in Brazil, while Portugal and its institutions profited from their labour.

The country’s president, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, said at an event with foreign journalists on Tuesday that Portugal “takes full responsibility” for the wrongs of the past and that those crimes, including colonial massacres, had “costs”.

“We have to pay the costs,” he said. “Are there actions that were not punished and those responsible were not arrested? Are there goods that were looted and not returned? Let’s see how we can repair this.”

The remarks came one year after Rebelo de Sousa said Portugal should apologise and “assume responsibility” for its role in the transatlantic slave trade, though he stopped short of providing any concrete details or a full apology.

Headshot of Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa looking down with his eyes closed

In both instances, the president’s remarks were made primarily to international audiences, said Paula Cardoso, the founder of the Afrolink online platform for Black professionals in Portugal.

“Behind this international strategy is the lack of national recognition that this topic should be discussed,” Cardoso said in an email. “Kids are still learning at schools that Portugal was an excellent coloniser, that the country ‘discovered’ other countries, and that Portuguese people are so unique that they mixed with different cultures as if no violations occurred.”

She agreed on the need for reparations, arguing that Portugal must pay the costs of “being the creator of the transatlantic slave trade , of a culture of dehumanisation of Black bodies”.

She said practical actions to fight the systemic and structural racism that arose from this and that continued to colour the country today were also needed.

“We don’t even collect data on ethnicity to start with,” said Cardoso. “We are not even discussing the past, accepting that we must confront different historical narratives to consider the negative impact of the so-called Discoveries Age. So, how is Portugal taking full responsibility?”

The Portuguese president’s remarks come after the United Nations human rights chief added his voice to the African and Caribbean countries calling for amends to be made over slavery and colonisation.

after newsletter promotion

“On reparations, we must finally enter a new era,” the high commissioner for human rights, Volker Türk, said last week at a UN forum on people of African descent. “Governments must step up to show true leadership with genuine commitments to move swiftly from words to action that will adequately address the wrongs of the past.”

Between the 15th and 19th centuries, at least 12.5 million Africans were kidnapped into slavery and forcibly transported long distances by mainly European ships and merchants.

European leaders for the most part have sought to steer clear of meaningfully addressing the call for reparations. When the government of the Netherlands apologised for its role in the transatlantic slave trade in 2022, it said a €200m (£172m) fund to address this past would not be used to compensate descendants but instead spent on initiatives such as education and addressing the present-day impacts of slavery. Germany has been chastised for excluding the ethnic minorities who were murdered by the tens of thousands from talks over reparations. Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Rebelo de Sousa said he believed that acknowledging the past and taking responsibility for it was more important than apologising. “Apologising is the easy part,” he said.
