Tathagata Mukherjee 12 months ago Booked for Netarhat, Betla, Patratu and Ranchi circuit for 4 of us including 2 Senior Citizens and 2 Ladies with knee problem from 20.03.2023 to 24.03.2023 on 20.02.2023. At that time nothing regarding renovation work at Patratu was informed to us. The Kolkata Office was helpful. They also arranged for Cab for the whole circuit. On the first day to Nertarhat there was an accident near Lohardaga. Luckily all of us including driver were in good shape and unhurt. Remarkably within one and half hour replacement of the damaged Cab was arranged. This is really praiseworthy on behalf of Betla Tours and Travels. However at Patratu on 22.03.2023, we were provided rooms on 3rd Floor and the Lift was not working!! Adding to this Renovation work was in full swing on the 3rd Floor resulting in particle pollution as well as continuous sound pollution from carpentry. Regarding non functioning of Lift there was practically no answer apart from technical glitch. At Hotel Birsa Vihar, Ranchi we faced the same problem regarding non working of Lift on 23.03.2023 and 24.03.2023 but we were provided rooms on 1st Floor resulting less painful going upstairs. The ready made answer to non functioning Lift were " Lift is not working from yesterday, we have informed technical person. They will come tomorrow". We stayed two days at Ranchi i.e. one day beyond so called "tomorrow" but the Lift remained static. At Patratu there were 3 elderly couples from Asansol on 22.03.2023 who also expressed their displeasure regarding renovation work going on the floor and non functioning of Lift. We have mailed the appropriate Authority for not letting Rooms under such hostile circumstances where normal habitat and peace can not be maintained. As usual the email was not responded till now. The facilities are nice, primely located but the cons are unanswered. Hope this Government Initiative will swing into action regarding proper maintenance of Lift and not allow Guests in a situation here renovation work is going on full swing. The Kolkata Office may not be aware of these facts but Local Authority in Patratu should have informed Kolkata Office regarding situation so that such Bitter Experiences could easily be avoided. We all appreciate that such reluctant attitude will not result in another "HMT". Hope this review will help Elderly people to be cautious of the issues which they may have to face.

Subir Biswas 18 months ago I had visited this office today for booking of tourist lodges at Ranchi, Netarhat, Betla and Patratu and had a wonderful experience. Two staff-membered office but real efficient and courteous service. Desk executive Mr. Suman Naskar and office manager Mr.Sanjib Sarkar attended to me and got the all jobs done in a pleasant mood. I am very satisfied with their performance. Air-conditioning machine was not functional at the reception counter.

Jharkhand: Untouched, unseen and unbelievable

India’s fourteenth largest state by area, Jharkhand was inhabited much before the rest of India. Ancient cave paintings indicate that this region was occupied during the Mesolithic and Chalcolithic period. Carbon dating of some the iron artifacts found during excavations show that the inhabitants were using iron as early as 1400 BCE, much before the occupants of the north-western parts of India.

Most of Jharkhand is still rural hinterland, and nature has been preserved beautifully, creating the perfect backdrop for an idyllic holiday.  Whether it’s the beautiful waterfalls, majestic hills, verdant plains or the colourful culture of the people, Jharkhand will leave you wanting more.

Highlights of Jharkhand: Things to see and do

Jharkhand is a nature lover’s delight. The wild, untouched land, with its numerous varieties of flora and fauna is the perfect destination for those looking to reconnect with nature. Spend time here with the original inhabitants of the land and learn the ancient ways of the tribal community. Places of worship, quaint towns and friendly people complete the Jharkhand experience

Jharkhand has nearly 72 temples, most of them dedicated to Lord Shiva. While the deities attract countless pilgrims, who come to pay homage to the god, the temples themselves are fine examples of architectural beauty. Many of these ancient structures are from the Mughal era. Some of the temples you must visit when in Jharkhand include:

  • Angrabadi Temple
  • Deoghar Temple
  • Jagannathpur
  • Pahari Mandir

What makes the temples unique is that they are made of terracotta, a kind of red clay. While some of the temples have succumbed to the vagaries of nature, several are still standing. A trip to Jharkhand is a must while the structures are still around.

Jharkhand has stunning wildlife, well cared for in the many natural reserves and forests in the state. For a truly thrilling wildlife experience, do visit any of the famous wildlife sanctuaries in Jharkhand.

  • Dalma WildLife Sanctuary
  • Hazaribagh Wild Life Sanctuary
  • Betla National Park
  • Saranda - The Sal Forest
  • Palamau Tiger Reserve

Places to visit

Jharkhand might be a young state, but it has several attractions hidden within its borders for the curious traveller. When in Jharkhand, you must visit:

Art and Culture

For generations now, craftsmen from Jharkhand have created exquisite handicrafts, using the natural resources that the land has to offer. Bamboo and wood are used to make boxes, doors, windows, spoons and even fishing equipment. The world famous Dokra art comes from the Malhar and Tentri tribes. Besides these, the soil of Jharkhand is used to create elaborate art in clay, such as toys, pots, jugs, etc. Did you know that one of India’s oldest tribal painting styles, the paitkar comes from Jharkhand?

Dance and music are an integral part of the culture, and there are many traditional at forms that are practiced all through the year.

Jharkhand has a rich tribal culture and people here find reasons to celebrate fairs and festivals all through the year. The state celebrates nature, its cattle and its livelihood, and each festival is a reflection of its culture and heritage. Some of the festivals to plan a holiday around include kunda mela and chhatra mela (festivals of cattle), kolhaiya mela, kundri mela, lawalong mela, tutilawa mela, sangharo mela and belqada mela.

Unfortunately, the food of Jharkhand has not achieved national fame. However, the hungry traveller simply has to traverse the length and breadth of the state to come across a range of mouth-watering delicacies just waiting to be discovered. Like all parts of India, Jharkhand too has some staples and some truly divine foods. The cooking medium is mustard oil and that is what gives it the heavenly aroma.

A typical Jharkhandi meal will contain roti, rice, sabzi and achar. It is the other foods, like the litti choka, pittha, rugra, chilka roti, bamboo shoots, dhuska and aloo choka that have given a unique flavor to Jharkhandi cuisine. If you have a sweet tooth, then you must taste the malpua, thekua, mitha khaja and til barfi.

Interesting facts about Jharkhand

Jharkhand, meaning the bushland or land of forests, is a land-locked state and shares its border with Bihar to the north, Uttar Pradesh to the northwest, Chhattisgarh to the west, Odisha to the south and West Bengal to its east.

Most of Jharkhand occupies the Chota Nagpur plateau and the state is drenched with numerous rivers that flow through it. The Damodar, North Koel, South Koel, Brahmani, Sankh and Subarnarekha rivers bring their waters to the land and the forests that cover it.

The abundance of untouched forest land and hills contributes to the incredible flora and fauna of Jharkhand. Palamau Tiger Reserve, under the aegis of Project Tiger, has also played a significant role in protecting this rich diversity.

Timings: When you should visit

Jharkhand has a typical tropical climate and winter offers much solace to the traveler. Here the summers are hot and wet, with temperatures touching 37 degrees. Summer is followed by the monsoon and the state experiences considerable rainfall during this season. As befits a tropical region, winters are mild and pleasant, and the best time to visit.

Plan your trip to Jharkhand between October and February when the weather is pleasant and comfortable. Temperature usually do not go beyond 20 degrees, and the coldest it can get is 10, making it an ideal time to spend outdoors.

How to get to Jharkhand

By flight: Ranchi has Jharkhand’s biggest domestic airport and it offers connectivity to major Indian cities like Delhi , Bangalore , Kolkata, Mumbai and Hyderabad. Other airports in the state include the Bokaro Airport, Jamshedpur Airport and Dhanbad Airport, mostly for private and charter flights.

By rail: Jharkhand has an excellent railway network that connects it to the rest of India as well as to cities within its borders. Ranchi, Bokaro, Dhanbad, Jamshedpur, Chandil and Tatanagar are some main railway stations.

By road: Jharkhand’s network of national highways and state highways is extensive and connects every corner of the state. There are several private and state-owned buses that ply these routes.

History: The oldest and yet the youngest

Jharkhand is one of the earliest civilized regions of India, and yet it is one of the youngest states of India. Excavations have revealed paintings and iron weapons that have been carbon-dated to earlier than 1400 BCE. Over the course of the next many years, the land was ruled by several kingdoms including Magadha, Anga and Samudragupta. It was during the reign of Akbar that Mughal influence made its way to this part of India.

The region was always fragmented, and various parts of the land were ruled by numerous kings and chieftains. It was lack of this unity that enabled the British to capture and colonise the land.

Of course, there were several revolts and rebellions from the tribal people of Jharkhand against the British rule, and it was only after Independence that the many states conceded to becoming part of India, forming Bihar and Orissa. The demand, however, was for an independent state for the tribal people, and it was only in 2000 that Jharkhand was carved out of the southern tip of Bihar.

Centre stays all tourism activities at holy Jain site 'Sammed Shikharji' in Jharkhand

Union environment ministry sent a office memorandum to the state in this regard following directions from prime minister narendra modi.

The Centre on Thursday stayed all tourism activities at the Parasnath Hill where the Jain religious site 'Sammed Shikharji' is located and directed the Jharkhand government to immediately take all steps necessary to protect its sanctity.

The Union Environment Ministry sent an office memorandum to the state in this regard following directions from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, sources said.

The development comes after Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav met representatives of the Jain community over the issue earlier in the day and assured them that the government is "committed to maintain the sanctity of 'Sammed Shikharji Parvat Kshetra' which is a holy place not only for the Jain community but for the entire country".

Sammed Shikharji, located on the Parasnath Hill in Giridih district of Jharkhand, is the biggest pilgrimage centre of the Jain community.

Members of the community had been protesting against the state government's move to promote religious tourism at Parasnath Hill.

In August 2019, the environment ministry had notified an eco-sensitive zone (ESZ) around the Parasnath Wildlife Sanctuary and approved eco-tourism activities in pursuance of the proposal submitted by the state government.

The ministry, in a statement, said it has received several representations from different organizations representing the Jain community about the issues related to "certain activities taking place at Parasnath Wildlife Sanctuary which have adversely affected the sentiments of followers of Jain Dharma".

"The grievances mention the faulty implementation of provisions of the ESZ notification by the Jharkhand government. It has been mentioned that such negligence by state authorities has hurt their sentiments," the ministry said.

ESZs act as "shock absorbers" to protected areas by prohibiting, regulating and promoting activities around them.

"The ESZ notification is not intended to promote uncontrolled tourism, and definitely not to promote all kinds of development activities within a sanctuary boundary. Declaration of ESZ is in fact to restrict or regulate activities surrounding the sanctuary and, therefore, outside its boundary," the ministry clarified.

In the memorandum issued to the additional chief secretary of the Jharkhand government's forest department, the ministry said the "implementation of provisions of clause 3 of the said eco-sensitive zone notification is stayed forthwith, including amongst others all tourism and eco-tourism activities".

The state government is directed to immediately take all steps necessary to ensure the same, it said.

Meanwhile, representatives of different Jain groups held a press conference to thank Prime Minister Modi for the decision which, they said, will ensure that the sanctity of their most sacred pilgrimage site is maintained.

"Our concerns have been addressed and the issue has been resolved to our satisfaction," they said in a statement.

The environment ministry said the Central government recognizes the sanctity of Sammed Shikharji Parvat Kshetra and "significance for the Jain community as well as the nation at large; and reiterates its commitment towards maintaining the same".

"In this regard, the state government is directed to immediately take all steps necessary to strictly enforce the provisions of clause 7.6.1 of the Management Plan of the Parasnath Wildlife Sanctuary which protects the whole Parasnath Hill; categorically prohibiting amongst others, activities such as the selling of liquor, drugs, and other intoxicants," the memo read.

The state government should also strictly enforce the ban on the sale and consumption of liquor and non-vegetarian food items on Parasnath Hill, it said.

The implementation of the management plan will also prevent people from playing loud music or using loudspeakers; defiling sites of religious and cultural significance such as sacred monuments, lakes, rocks, caves, and shrines; damaging flora or fauna; causing environmental pollution; committing injurious acts to forests, water bodies, plants, animals, or disturbing the natural tranquillity of such sites; coming with pet animals; and unauthorised camping and trekking on the Parasnath Hill.

For effective monitoring of the provisions of the ESZ notification, the Centre has also constituted a monitoring committee which will have two members from the Jain community and one from the local tribal community as permanent invitees.
