Pune to Tarkarli beach distance: 392 km

The unexplored beaches in Malvan

Devbagh beach.

Devbagh beach is quite close to Tarkarli beach. This is the place where the Karli river meets the Arabian sea. The locals call this – Devbagh Sangam , which means the Devbagh confluence. When you stand here the great Arabian Sea is on one side and the Karli river bank is on another side. This scenic spot is often used for photoshoots. Several migratory sea birds arrive here in the winter and this beach is a beautiful sight for the birders and bird watchers.

Tsunami island

A unique island called the Tsunami island is located very close to the Devbagh beach. You can take a ferry to this island from a small jetty near Devbagh beach. This island is named so because it was created due to the tsunami. This island is now slowly growing popular. The beautiful nature at this place might have you wondering whether this is Maharashtra or Mauritius?

Chivala beach

best beaches in Malvan - chivla beach malvan

This tiny C-shaped beach is quite beautiful with its white sands and clear waters. It is located just 1.5 km from Malvan bus depot. It’s another great place for water sports like snorkelling, scuba diving, jetski rides, parasailing and more. Even a quick swim in these crystal clear blue waters will be very refreshing.

Kolamb beach

Kolamb beach is famous for Malvani cuisine and Alphanso mangoes. Sometimes dolphins can be spotted playing and dancing in the waters. It is rather non-touristy and it’s located just ahead of the Chivala beach. This beach is very peaceful and away from the tourist crowd. You can have a nice peaceful stay at one of the homestays around here. The Kolamb creek flows inland from near this beach. And the Kolamb bridge that goes over this creek is beautiful.

The Unseen beaches in Malvan

Wayari beach.

beaches in Malvan - Wayari beach malvan

This golden sands beach is most frequented by the local fishermen. It is stashed in between the popular beaches of Tarkarli and Dandi, which is why it is still quite unexplored. There are several hotels and homestays here, where you can have a peaceful stay with your family. The sunset from this beach is perfect. A few restaurants nearby serve amazing Malvani cuisine and seafood. You can even buy freshly caught fish and other seafood and get them cooked at one of the hotels here. The northern part of this beach, called Wayari Bhutnath beach is also very scenic and peaceful.

Wairy Ubhatwadi beach

This beach towards the south of Malvan has silver sands and sparkling clear blue waters. You can find several different types of seashells along the shore, to take home as your souvenirs. Many dolphins come closer to this beach early in the morning when the first rays of the sun touch the sea. It is also a beautiful place to watch the sunset. It has a steep shore which is why swimming is not recommended here. But you can relax or play along the shoreline.

The road to this beach is a bit confusing to find as there is only one signboard. You can ask the locals or figure it out from google maps. Not many tourists visit here, which is why it is a clean and peaceful beach in Malvan.

Tondavali beach

Tondavali beach is located to the north of Malvan. It is less commercialized and quite unexplored. It is located in the northernmost part of Malvan and it’s closely connected to the Talashil peninsula. This beach is ideal for a night stay to enjoy the amazing night sky. Several stars are visible quite clearly. And on full moon days, the moonlit sea is the most amazing sight. This is an unforgettable moment or a once in a lifetime experience. Tondavali beach is the best spot to find dolphins dancing in the water early in the morning.

Malvan to Tondavali beach distance: 18 km

Talashil peninsula

malvan tourist places - hotels near tarkarli beach malvan

This is a very unique and interesting location in Malvan. The Tondavali beach extends southward to form the Talashil peninsula. The Gad river flows just behind the peninsula. And the vast expanse of the Arabian sea lies to its west. So, this peninsula is surrounded by sea on one side and the river on another, making it a beautiful out-of-the-world place. At the end tip of the Talashil peninsula, the Gad river meets the Arabian sea. The easiest way to reach the end tip of this peninsula is to take a ferry from the Sarjekot jetty.

And you can also check the Shimpala point close to the Sarjekot jetty. It is a small island approachable by a ferry only. There are several seashells scattered all across this little rocky island. You will be amazed by the variety of colours and patterns of the seashells found here.

Moreover, you can go boating in the waters and even watch the fishermen making a catch.

This is a hidden beach near Malvan, and very few tourists know about it yet. A popular attraction near this beach is the 18th-century Nivati fort. It was built by the Marathas. If you go to this fort, you will get a complete panoramic view of the surrounding area. Moreover, the clear water and white sands that stretch for a mile on this beach are definitely worth visiting.

This is one of the most beautiful beaches with white sand. At Devbagh beach’s Sangam point, the Karli river meets the Arabian sea. There is no delta formation here and Karli river slowly fades into the Arabian sea.

Rock Garden

This garden is walking distance from Chiwla beach and located next to the Police station. This is a good place for people traveling with kids. There is a garden with swings and play area. The washrooms here can be used for changing clothes if in case you took a dip in the sea.

There are restaurants and stalls in this area which provide different food options. Jai Ganesh Mandir is another popular place near Rock garden Malvan.

Go for Scuba diving in Malvan

Malvan region is most popular for scuba diving in Maharashtra. The clear underwater of Malvan offers excellent visibility for scuba diving. The best scuba diving spots are near Sindhudurg fort and Tsunami Island near Tarkarli.

If you have not done scuba diving anywhere then it is a great experience to watch beautiful aquatic life and colorful corals. If you don’t know diving or swimming then there is no problem because the instructor’s hand hold you underwater.

Only trained and certified divers are allowed for deep sea diving and untrained people like us are taken only a few meters under the water. Unlike places like Andaman where oxygen tank is attached on the back of diver, here they keep the tank in the boat and a pipe attached to it goes to the diver.

There are some companies in Goa and they provide one day package to Malvan from Goa for scuba diving and snorkeling. Scuba diving costs approximately 1500 INR per person for a dive.

Snorkeling in Tarkali

If you feel claustrophobic underwater and not sure about diving then snorkeling is the next best thing for you. If you don’t know swimming then they provide a life jacket and an inflated tube for snorkeling. Mostly a guide does the hand holding and takes you to the best places where you can see some corals and colorful fishes.

Snorkeling cost 300 INR for a trip of 20 to 25 minutes, cost of snorkeling gear is usually extra.

Take a trip to Tsunami Island

As the name suggests, this island appeared after the Tsunami of 2004. Earlier it was underwater even during the low tide but after the Tsunami, the island surface during the low tide. There are few shacks on the island, these shacks are constructed on raised platforms of thick bamboo poles.

During high tide water covers the island and it goes up 2 to 3 feet. Walking on the island at that time or just sitting on a chair with feet in the water is so much fun experience.

The area around Tsunami island is best for watching aquatic life and Dolphin spotting. Boat ride to Tsunami island in the backwater is available from Devbagh beach and it cost 300 INR.

Visit Sindhudurg Fort in the Arabian sea

This fort is one of the excellent examples of the architect and workmanship. The fort was built by Shivaji to counter the European colonizers and Siddis of Murud Janjira in Alibaug .

Sindhudurg fort was built on a small island known as the Khurte bet/island. More than 4000 pounds of lead was used for the casting and foundation stones of the fort. It is spread in over 48 acres, its walls are 30 feet high and 12 feet thick.

Sindhudurg fort was completed in 1667 after 3 years of construction. The main entrance to the fort is concealed in such a way that it is not possible to detect from some distance in the sea.

There is a temple devoted to Shivaji which houses his sword, his fingerprints, and footprints. There are 3 fresh water wells, a Bhavani Devi temple and several other structures in the fort complex. It is believed that there is an underground escape tunnel which opens in a village 6 km away from the coast.

Try Malvani cuisine

The Malvani cuisine is also known as Konkani cuisine as it belongs to the southern region of Konkan coast. Almost all Malvani dishes are seasoned with a unique powder masala which is known as Malvani masala. This masala is prepared with 15-16 different dried spices. Coconut is another important ingredient of Malvani cuisine and it is used fresh grated, dry roasted, mixed in curry masala and as coconut milk. The Kokam and tamarind are important flavoring agents used to make the dishes tangy.

Seafood and fish dishes along with different vegetarian dishes dominate the Malvani cuisine. In this region, fish is coated with dry semolina and masala before frying. Bhakari, which is a type of roti (Flatbread) made with rice flour is a most popular form of roti and available everywhere.

Thanks for the info, good narration. Just want to know if we have to pre book the scuba diving activity or we can get it available at the time of visit ??

You can pre book it. Infact it’s a better option so you know the morning reporting time of the day for which you have booked the scuba. Generally, if you do scuba early morning, you get to see a lot of marine life because as the day progresses the water is disturbed and so is the marine life. However you can also book the scuba diving on the spot. But the scuba activities, on most of the beaches are available at the maximum till 1 p.m.

Malvan Beach

This is one of the most commercially active beaches in the Konkan. It is buzzing with life at the jetty where most of the fishermen anchor their boats of various dimensions and colors. There are a few bars and restaurants on the beach unlike most other seashores on the Sindhudurg coast. It is one of the friendliest atmospheres alive with banter among the locals.

This beach is not a place for relaxation, however, it is close to the city centre and perhaps the most accessible beach in the area. Another promising forthcoming attraction here is a one of its kind marine park in Asia. The government has proposed the marine park since 2000, but there has not been any action on it yet. The area of Malvan is a fortified island on the coastal reef. Coral patches have been recorded in the interstitial regions around the Sindhudurg fort. Most of these marine flora and fauna from the inter-tidal area is exposed during any low tide. So keep an eye out for a great opportunity for scuba diving. However, for now the best attraction on this beach remains to be the Sindhudurga fort.
