Norfolk VA cruise port

Region East Coast USA and Canada New England

Local Time 2024-04-10 16:51

Port Norfolk VA cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Norfolk VA, Virginia. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Norfolk VA is a major port city in southeastern Virginia (USA). It borders to the west Elizabeth River and to the north - Chesapeake Bay (Atlantic Ocean). The city has population around 250,000 (metro 1,67 million), ranking it the Virginia state's second-largest - after Virginia Beach (around 450,000 / metro 1,72 million). Four cities (Norfolk, Portsmouth, Newport News, Hampton) form together the Hampton Roads Metro featuring one of the world's largest natural harbours.

As an exclusive CCL-Carnival homeport (since 2002), Norfolk's main competitors are the homeports Baltimore MD and Charleston SC (another CCL-exclusive departure port in the USA). Currently, Norfolk's cruise business generates ~USD 153 million annually (in direct spending by cruise companies and passengers/crew), ~USD 170 million in Virginia state wages, and supports ~2800 local jobs.

Norfolk is an "independent city" (not part of any US county) and borders with two of the state's independent cities - Chesapeake (south) and Virginia Beach (east). Norfolk is considered Hampton Roads region's historic, cultural and financial center. It is also a major US military seaport, having the world's largest shipbuilding and shiprepair yard, Here are based US Marine, US Navy's Atlantic Fleet, USCG (Coast Guard), Armed Forces Staff College, Langley Air Force Base (astronaut training centre).

Popular among tourists neighboring leisure and travel destinations are Virginia Beach. Williamsburg and Jamestown. The city is at less than 2 hours drive distance from Richmond, 3 hours from Northern Virginia and 3 hours from Raleigh. The cruise port benefits greatly from the Norfolk International Airport offering 200 flights daily. The airport is just 15-20 min taxi drive from the cruise terminal. Other popular city attractions are the Chrysler Museum and Mariners Museum (with USA's largest mariner artifacts collection - maps, ship models, watercraft, paintings, scrimshaw/bone or ivory engravings and carvings).

The town was established in 1682 and its early growth was based on West Indies trade and shipping of products from North Carolina's and Virginia's plantations. However, virtually all buildings (except St Paul's Church) were destroyed during the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783). The city was rebuilt after the war and became an important maritime and shipbuilding center. Its military growth started during WW1 (1914-1918).

In 2022 started works on the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel/HRBT Expansion Project, by the contractor Hampton Roads Connector Partners (HRCP). The company contracted Herrenknecht AG (1977-founded German manufacturer of tunnel boring machines). In 14 months, Herrenknecht constructed (in Schwanau Germany) a large TBM/Tunnel Boring Machine which was shipped (via Antwerp Belgium) to Norfolk VA where was reassembled.

  • The TBM has height 46 ft (14 m), length 430 ft (131 m), weight 4500 tons, total power output 8,95 MW (12000 hp).
  • The TBM was launched from the South Island (Norfolk side) and bore at a daily rate of ~50 ft (15 m).
  • The HRBT Expansion Project's completion is scheduled for November 2025.
  • The project (budgeted USD 3,3 billion) was approved in 2017. Works started in October 2020. By the project will be expanded the current 4-lane bridge-tunnel to 6-lanes (in both directions from the interchanges I-664 to I-564), and a new 3-lane bridge-tunnel will be built to carry the eastbound Hampton-Norfolk traffic.

Port Norfolk

As port of call (on transit itineraries), the Port's business expands each year. Among the large cruise shipping companies visiting Norfolk VA are AIDA , TUI , Princess , NCL-Norwegian , plus several luxury lines with smaller vessels (like Silversea , RSSC-Regent , Oceania , ACL-American Cruise Lines ).

Currently, CCL-Carnival Cruise Line is the only company that homeports ships here (since 2002). Among the port's newly added amenities are Wi-Fi (throughout the waterfront area) and new bike lanes (cycle lanes) throughout the city.

Port Norfolk VA (locode USORF) is located in Hampton Roads Harbor (along the rivers Elizabeth and Lafayette) and is managed by Virginia Port Authority. It covers land area approx 2,3 km2 (567 acres/230 hectares), of which 131 acres (0,5 km2) are for container storage.

Norfolk International Terminals is Virginia's largest cargo facility served by Super Post-Panamax gantry cranes (rail-mounted), The terminal has 6 berths and total quay length/berthing of 2020 m (6630 ft) and max draft 15 m (50 ft). This allows docking of large container ships/boxships with max capacity 14000 TEU-containers. Port's current annual capacity is around 1,43 million TEUs. It also offers 719 plugs for reefers (refrigerated containers). Norfolk's container terminal is divided into 3 sections - South (4 berths, area size 272 acres / 1,1 km2), North (2 berths, area 245 acres / 1 km2), and Central (50 acres / 0,2 km2).

The seaport has direct rail access to Heartland Corridor (railway serving freight trains) and is also connected to North Carolina Highway 42. The Port is adjacent to highways 64 and 564, and via Terminal Blvd to Hampton Blvd (Norfolk City), with additional access to roads 17 and 58.

In November 2016, Port Norfolk and Konecranes (Finnish crane manufacturer) signed a USD 217 million contract for building and delivering 86 rail-mounted gantry cranes. The US company TMEIC is the supplier of cranes' drive and control systems.

In July 2018, a heavy-load vessel delivered at Norfolk Terminals the first 6 rail-mounted gantry cranes - part of the USD 375 million port expansion project. Construction works for expanding the NIT (Norfolk International Terminals) started in 2019 and were completed in 2020. By this 3-phases project, the Port's south stack container yard was completely redesigned and fitted with 60 new RMGs (rail-mounted gantry cranes), 10 new shuttle trucks, a total of 30 new RMG TEU stacks. Norfolk Port's annual capacity was increased by 400,000 TEUs (up to 1,83 million).

In August 2019, to the Chesapeake VA-based company Cottrell Contracting (1928-founded) was awarded a USD 10,4 million contract for dredging Norfolk Harbor's Inner Channel. The works started in December with scheduled completion in May 2020, and include pumping of ~840,000 m3 (29,7 million ft3) of sediment from the shipping channel and transporting it to Portsmouth VA's Craney Island. Such dredging works are conducted by the US Army Corps of Engineers (federal agency) and in Norfolk Harbor Channel are required every 12-15 months.

In February 2020, CCL-Carnival signed a 5-year agreement with Norfolk City for seasonal homeporting at Half Moone Cruise Center (2020 through 2025). The deal was signed by Kenneth Alexander (Norfolk City Mayor) and Terry Thornton (CCL's Senior VP of Nautical and Port Operations). As part of the agreement, Norfolk City agreed to upgrade and expand the Half Moone Terminal for handling larger ships and to expedite the traffic by installing a PBB (Passenger Boarding Bridge).

In 2021 started the seasonal homeporting in Norfolk VA of the 4700-passenger liner Carnival Magic - the Port's ever-largest cruise vessel). Season 2021 included a series of 12 roundtrips and seasonal capacity ~50,000 tourists. Carnival Magic's 2023 ex-Norfolk season was CCL's ever-longest - 6 months (May 14th thru October 22nd).

The ship's ex-Norfolk itineraries (roundtrips leaving from Nauticus Half Moone Cruise Center) visit ports in The Bahamas (5-6-day to Bimini Island, Nassau , Freeport , Half Moon Cay ), Eastern Caribbean (8-day to Half Moon Cay, Grand Turk , Amber Cove Dominicana , San Juan Puerto Rico ), Bermuda (6-day to King's Wharf ), Canada and New England (8-day to Portland ME, St John NB, Halifax NS, Sydney NS).

CCL's voyages from Norfolk to the Caribbean include 4 sea days (2 southbound plus 2 northbound).

Norfolk VA cruise terminal

Cruise ships in Port Norfolk VA dock at Nauticus Half Moone Cruise Terminal (officially "Half Moone Cruise and Celebration Center", aka "Decker Half Moone Center"). This modern facility (construction cost USD 36 million) was inaugurated in 2007. It is located in downtown, on the city's Nauticus Waterfront on the Elizabeth River.

The Nauticus terminal is also close to Norfolk Airport (taxi travel time approx 15 min).

The cruise ship terminal has its own parking area (day rates USD 15) and provides shuttle bus service to and from the terminal. The facility is sized 80,000 ft2 (7430 m2 / 1,8 acres). It is adjacent to the Nauticus (maritime-themed museum and science center) and the museum ship USS Wisconsin (Iowa-class battleship launched in 1943). Throughout the year, the waterfront's Town Point Park area hosts popular festivals and various public events.

As the size of homeported here cruise liners constantly grow, the seaport considers a development project to expand the terminal's berth to allow docking of the world's largest passenger ships .

Cruise calls to Norfolk ‘an economic shot-in-the-arm’ for city

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The unexpected changes in cruise ship schedules are an economic shot-in-the-arm for Norfolk.

Sunday, passengers who had to divert from Baltimore because of the bridge collapse said it was smooth sailing.

And now, even more ships are heading to Hampton Roads.

Norfolk’s attitude is whatever we can do to help. So Royal Caribbean will bring in “Vision of the Seas” Thursday morning with 2,500 people getting off, and by 11:30 a.m., 2,500 will start boarding to go on to begin their own cruise.

Stephen Kirkland, executive director of Nauticus, said he had been talking with Royal Carribean since last Tuesday, when the container ship Dali collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

6 presumed dead after cargo ship causes Baltimore bridge to collapse

Thursday, Royal Caribbean and Kirkland decided to divert the cruise ship the Vision of the Seas from Baltimore to here at Nauticus.

“So, there were a lot of logistic issues that they had to work out at their end,,” Kirkland said, “and we had to work out at our end, but we are happy to support them. We are happy to help.”

And make no mistake, you do not just change a port of call, which is defined as “an intermediate port where ships customarily stop for supplies, repairs or transshipment of cargo, and a stop included on an itinerary.”

“It is so much more complicated just opening the terminal doors,” Kirkland said. “You have got to coordinate with Customs and Border Protection, with the maritime community, with the stevedore services, with thousands and thousands and thousands of pieces of luggage.”

What usually takes a month to confirm a port of call in this case took days.

“I cannot impress upon you enough that this is not just a Nauticus effort,” Kirkland said. “This is a maritime community and citywide effort, and we’re proud to support it.

Benefitting the most — Granby Street businesses such as the Hilton Norfolk The Main.

Down the street, we found Jai Brown, general Manager at Jack Brown’s Beer & Burger Joint.

“it’s just an influx of business up and down Granby Street,” Brown said. “So, it is our anniversary day on top of all the cruises coming in,” Brown said. “It’s going to be amazing. It is going to be busy though.”

Said Kirkland: “Well, we will have 2,500 passengers on April 4. We’ll have somewhere around 50 to 55 buses that will take those guests back to their vehicles in Baltimore, and then we will load the vessel again for another cruise that same day this coming Thursday.”

Those new passengers that will be boarding are encouraged to park in the MacArthur Center South parking lot.

“We have pulled the entire community together,” Kirkland said. “I mean, from the passenger and visitor services side to the maritime side, I think we are in great shape. I cannot promise flawless calls just because of the nature of getting these guests back to Baltimore, but we can promise you that we will work as hard as possible to turn these ships as efficiently as possible.”

There is no doubt, Thursday morning Norfolk will be a happening place — getting people off the cruise ship and then getting them back on.

In times of crisis and tragedy the operating word at Nauticus is cooperation.

Carnival Legend cruise ship docks in Norfolk following Baltimore bridge collapse

N ORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Thousands of passengers got off and on the Carnival Legend cruise ship docked in Norfolk on Sunday, March 31.

They were originally supposed to be in Baltimore, but were diverted about four hours away. The change was prompted by the tragic collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore last week.

10 On Your Side spoke to many of the passengers who got off the ship in the morning, including Matt Shagogue from Columbia, Maryland.

Shagogue thought back to the moment he found out they weren’t getting dropped off in their original destination.

“Woke up to it, I guess, Tuesday, and it spread like wildfire on the ship of course,” Shagogue said. “And then it was like in a holding pattern. The captain said, ‘I’ll let you know when I know’ and then it turned into, ‘this is what we’re going to do, we’re going to Norfolk.'”

Shagogue also added he thought cruise staff did a great job of keeping everything under control.

“It was pretty smooth,” Shagogue said. “Carnival did a great job kind of doing everything on the fly.”

About 70 buses took the arriving passengers back up to Maryland, but not everyone chose that mode of transportation like Eddie Conroy from Ashburn, Virginia.

“Instead of spending the seven hours we figured it would just be easier to rent a car go straight back for four hours and then will pick up our other car later in the week or next weekend,” he said.

Some passengers who boarded the ship in the afternoon said the change of the pickup location was welcomed.

“We’re from Norfolk, so it helped us out,” said passenger Ebony Freeman.

However, others called it a challenge, Spouses Jessica and Mathieu Roa said they had to make the long drive down to Baltimore to start their seven-day vacation.

“I thought it was going to get canceled,” Jessica said.

That’s not the last cruise ship Norfolk will see; the Royal Caribbean Vision of the Seas cruise ship is set to dock in Norfolk next Thursday.

Royal Caribbean's Vision of the Seas arrives in Norfolk, diverted after Baltimore Key Bridge collapse

norfolk va day cruise

NORFOLK, Va. — For the second time in five days, a cruise ship diverted from Baltimore because of the March 26 bridge collapse docked in Norfolk Thursday morning.

20240404_055035.jpg

Buses lined up outside Norfolk’s Half Moone Bay cruise terminal, waiting to take thousands of passengers debarking Royal Caribbean's Vision of the Seas back to Baltimore.

Around 8 a.m. Thursday, passengers began to disembark.

Those News 3 spoke to didn't seem to mind arriving in Norfolk instead of Baltimore.

“We just had to make some travel arrangement changes," Donna Bardin said.

“It wasn’t too surprising since we knew we’d get re-routed somewhere," Maria Posey said.

On March 31, Carnival’s Legend docked at the terminal.

Carnival Legend docks in Norfolk after Baltimore bridge collapse forces reroute

Carnival Legend docks in Norfolk after Baltimore bridge collapse forces reroute

It dropped off and picked up thousands of passengers.

Like the Royal Caribbean passengers, those getting off were offered a complimentary coach bus ride back to Baltimore.

“We’re actually getting picked up," Posey said, heading to the car that would take them back to their destination in Burk, Virginia. "Norfolk seemed as good a place as any. It’s actually not too far from home, so it’s quite alright.”

“It took about 48 hours until things were finalized," Bardin's husband, Dennis, said about the ship adjusting to being diverted from Baltimore. "Unfortunately, the way things go there was a lot of speculation and then the rumors start. ‘Well, we’re going to do this, we’re going to do that.’ In the end, everything was great.”

The ship wasn't just dropping off passengers. It was also picking up the next group of cruisers.

Heather Daly is among that group. She lives in West Virginia and drove into Norfolk Wednesday night to stay in a hotel ahead of the cruise.

She said the last-minute changes were stressful, but she never thought about canceling. She is traveling with her son who has autism and says the cruise offers a program that helps people traveling with someone with autism.

“I also used to own a company where I traveled the country working the comic con circuit, so I’m used to booking parking and booking hotels," Daly said. "Before Royal even announced which port they were going to go out of, there was a possibility of Jersey or Norfolk. As soon as the bridge got hit, I booked hotels and parking in both."

Dawn Strickler was another passenger sailing out on the Vision of the Seas Thursday afternoon.

She lives in Maryland. She and her friend she's cruising with planned to drive down to Norfolk on Thursday morning. She also never considered canceling.

"I’m going for my birthday and I’ve had a rough couple years dealing with my daughter and I really need this cruise," Strickler said.

As of Thursday, the Vision of the Seas was scheduled to return on April 12.

The Legend was scheduled to be back again on April 7.

Bringing the ships in on such short notice is easier said than done, especially with preparations underway at the cruise terminal for a major renovation scheduled to start in May.

“This is a community effort," Stephen Kirkland, executive director of Nauticus, said ahead of the Legend's arrival on March 31. "Customs and Border Protection, our stevedore services locally, the entire maritime industry has come together to pull this off."

Nauticus operates the Half Moone cruise terminal.

“For us, it’s just a minor inconvenience," said one passenger after getting off the Legend on March 31. "We’ll get home at some point."

With the new ships diverting to Norfolk temporarily, a lot of people are wondering if and how they can get on one of the cruises if any original passengers cancel due to the port change.

Royal Caribbean cruises rerouted from Baltimore to Norfolk

"There's a lot of misinformation out there," Chesapeake travel advisor Kim Keizer told News 3 in an interview on March 29.

Keizer said people will have to go online and get on a waitlist.

She emphasizes, though, that the ships could return to Baltimore at any time and may only notify you 24 hours in advance if you get a spot.

Port of Baltimore suspends ship traffic after bridge collapse: What it means for travel

Travel is being impacted by Tuesday’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse along Interstate 695 in Baltimore, Maryland.

Drivers were immediately directed to take alternate routes through the city, following the early morning incident. What’s less clear is what the bridge collapse may mean for upcoming cruises in and out of Baltimore.

“Vessel traffic into and out of the Port of Baltimore is suspended until further notice,” the Port of Baltimore posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Live Updates: Baltimore's Key Bridge collapses after ship hits it; construction crew missing

Rep. Kweisi Mfume, D-Md., whose district includes the bridge and the port, called the collapse an “unthinkable horror” and said he had spoken with Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and the White House.

“They are responding with all of the assets at their disposal,” he said in a statement. “Our prayers right now are for the missing individuals and victims of this tragedy. We thank God for the effective service of our first responders.”

Here’s what we know.

Which cruises go to Baltimore?

Several major cruise lines serve Baltimore. According to the Cruise Lines International Association, the industry’s leading trade group, published itineraries in the 2024 calendar year include a dozen ships making 115 stops in Baltimore.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragedy and collapse of the Key Bridge that occurred last night and extend our support and heartfelt prayers to all those impacted,” CLIA spokesperson Anne Madison said in an emailed statement. “We join everyone in extending our thanks and appreciation to the first responders and emergency workers in Baltimore, the U.S. Coast Guard, and other professionals who are working with one goal in mind—to save lives. We are closely following this situation.”

Carnival’s website shows Carnival Pride and Carnival Legend also have sailings into or out of Baltimore set for April.

Carnival Legend will temporarily move operations to Norfolk, Virginia.

The ship's current cruise, which left for a planned round-trip sailing from Baltimore on March 24, will end in Norfolk on Sunday. Passengers will then receive free bus rides to Baltimore. The vessel's next cruise will sail round-trip from Norfolk later that day.

“Our thoughts remain with the impacted families and first responders in Baltimore,” Carnival president Christine Duffy said in a statement. “We appreciate the pledge made by President Biden today to dedicate all available resources to reopen Baltimore Harbor to marine traffic as soon as possible. As those plans are finalized, we will update our future cruise guests on when we will return home to Baltimore, but in the meantime, we appreciate the quick response and support from officials in Norfolk.”

The cruise line has not yet shared plans for Carnival Pride. Carnival's parent company, Carnival Corp., said the temporary change in homeport is estimated to have an impact of up to $10 million on adjusted EBITDA and adjusted net income this year, according to a news release .

Royal Caribbean's Vision of the Seas, which left from Baltimore on March 23 , will return to Norfolk instead on April 4. "Our guests on board will be provided compensation and complimentary shuttle transportation as well as Wi-Fi and phone calls to adjust their travel arrangements," a spokesperson said in an email.

The ship's April 4 and 12 cruises will leave from Norfolk, too. "Our guests booked to sail with us will receive compensation due to the necessary adjustments made to their vacations," the spokesperson added. "After returning from the April 12 cruise, Vision will head to the Bahamas for its previously scheduled maintenance."

Was your cruise itinerary changed?: What to do next

American Cruise Lines has roundtrip sailings from Baltimore scheduled in May, according to its website.

“We will monitor the situation and make adjustments to future cruises if needed, but at the present time our schedules remain unaffected, and our thoughts remain with those affected by the immediate situation and rescue efforts underway,” an American Cruise Lines spokesperson told USA TODAY.

Norwegian Cruise Line doesn’t appear to have any Baltimore sailings until September on Norwegian Sky . The line will stay in contact with the port and share any changes with passengers and travel partners, according to a spokesperson.

"In the meantime, we wish the city of Baltimore strength during this very unfortunate event," they said in an email.

Alternate routes for the Baltimore bridge

Most drivers can take Interstate 95 (Fort McHenry Tunnel) or Interstate 895 (Baltimore Harbor Tunnel) to avoid the collapsed bridge. However Maryland Transportation Authority notes there are some exceptions .

Vehicles carrying hazardous materials, including more than 10 pounds of propane, are not allowed in the tunnels. Additionally, vehicles more than 13-feet and 6-inches high or 8-feet wide may not use the 1-895 Baltimore Harbor Tunnel. Vehicles more than 14-feet and 6-inches high or 11-feet wide may not use the I-95 Fort McHenry Tunnel.

Those vehicles should use the western portion of I-695 instead.
