The Cotswolds & Beyond with Pam Ayres — air date, destinations, interview and what happens in season 2

Series 2 of The Cotswolds & Beyond with Pam Ayres on Channel 5 sees the famous poet meet Prince Charles and visit Stonehenge.

The Cotswolds & Beyond with Pam Ayres on Channel 5 sees the famous West Country poet exploring some beautiful areas.

The Cotswolds & Beyond with Pam Ayres returns to Channel 5 for 2022 with the famous comedy poet Pam travelling around the West of England again, but this time venturing a little bit further into neighbouring counties, hence the renaming of her second series to add '& Beyond'.

"I’m so pleased the first series was so well-received," says Pam. "This time we’ve gone over the borders, visiting beautiful places like Wells Cathedral and the caves in Cheddar. It’s such a novelty as I lead a fairly solitary existence normally. But it’s nice to be nosey!"

The six-part series also sees Pam chatting to famous locals, from Olympic rowing legend Sir Steve Redgrave to being greeted by Prince Charles at his Highgrove home. She begins by popping in on singer and actor Toyah Willcox, who lives in the village of Pershore in nearby Worcestershire.

So here's everything you need to know about Channel 5 travel series The Cotswolds & Beyond with Pam Ayres...

"It's nice to be nosey!" Pam Ayres told us.

The Cotswolds & Beyond with Pam Ayres air date

You can watch The Cotswolds & Beyond with Pam Ayres on Channel 5 from Friday September 2 at 8pm. It's a six-part series and Pam's show will also be available on My5 and we can update here if there's a US or international release date.

The Cotswolds and Beyond with Pam Ayres — destinations and episode guide

Here's our episode guide to The Cotswolds and Beyond with Pam Ayres so do keep checking back for updates each week...

Episode 1: Friday September 2 Pam begins with a trip to Stonehenge at sunrise. "It was particularly special to visit Stonehenge, because I first went in the 1960s, when you could just wander around and chalk your initials on the stones – it wasn't accorded any respect," says Pam. "Now it's revered as a mysterious monument, which I’m glad about." Later, Pam visits Letcombe Brook in Oxfordshire, where she hears about conservation efforts to protect the water vole. "I looked very stylish in my pink cashmere jumper with my waders," she laughs. "You don’t see water voles anymore, it's such a loss. They were commonplace when I was a child. You'd just see them in all the brooks and wouldn't think twice about it, but now it's a novelty. I’d like to go back and see how they’re getting on." Singer and actor Toyah Willcox lives in the village of Pershore in Worcestershire so joins Pam for a chinwag in this episode too.

Episode 2: Friday September 9 The main place of interest for Pam this week is Highclere Castle which of course doubles as Downton Abbey in the hit series and movies! "I had been there once before when I was a guest at my friend Des O' Connor's wedding, so I had already seen some of it," reveals Pam. "It's a very beautiful building with marvellous old rooms, it’s fascinating. But you do expect Carson to come in at any moment with a tray of coffee and a silver service!"

Pam remembers her childhood when you could freely wander around Stonehenge.

Episode 3: Friday September 16 Pam has a right royal special time visiting Prince Charles at his Highgrove stately home in Gloucestershire. "The build-up to meeting Prince Charles was tremendous because there's such a lot security around him, but we had a great chat," reveals Pam. "We got on very well because we're both very interested in conservation and wild flowers. We walked along the famous topiary Thyme Walk, looked at all the orchids and talked about the demise of insects. It was great to meet a range of people from all walks of life. I don't think I could have done it 20 years ago, I wouldn’t have had the confidence to go bowling into Highgrove and chat away, but I'm older now and comfortable in my own skin. I'm perfectly happy talking to anybody and I treat everybody the same."

Episodes 4 to 6 We'll update with the remaining episodes right here as soon as we can!

More from Pam Ayres on her amazing career

Do you think we’re starting to appreciate the beauty of the UK more, with the rise of staycations? Pam says: Yes I do, air travel has become so unpredictable that people are looking closer to home and quite right too, because there are such wonderful places in our own country. I think people are tired of the terrible way you get treated in airports, like cattle. I've got no inclination to go abroad now. It sounds a bit defeatist but I've been very fortunate to travel lots in my life for work, I've done 12 tours of Australia and New Zealand and I've been to so many countries. But I love my home and I’m so fortunate to live in this beautiful area. I feel unhappy in cities, I don't like those concrete buildings that make you feel dwarfed. I’m incredibly blessed to live in the Cotswolds and I’ve got a much better overview of the area since making this programme."

Has this series given you a taste for more presenting? Pam reveals: "We’ll see, it’s a lovely job but I’m 75. I'm not apologising for my age, and I’m lucky to be very fit, I just haven’t quite got the stamina I had when I was 30. I was ready for a break at the end of the shoot – it was 10 and a half weeks of full on work and long days, which I enjoyed, but it was nice to come home. Still, there was no time to put my feet up with a glass of rose, I had to crack on with everything else. I’ve got a book coming out in September, ‘Who Are You Calling Vermin?’ and I've written the lyrics for a children's version of Peter Pan, which is being staged in October. So there has been a lot of tweaking to do, and I’ve got theatre shows coming up as well. It’s ever so busy – I’m much busier than I thought I would be at this age.

Do you ever think about retiring? Pam says: "I've got no wish to sit and look at the wall. Sometimes it's too much — sometimes I'm at my wit's end and wondering why on earth I have taken all this stuff on. But then I look at other friends of a similar age and they've sort of given up. Well, I haven't given up, I'm still going strong!

Pam Ayres reveals that she doesn't plan to retire anytime soon!

Is there a trailer for The Cotswolds and Beyond with Pam Ayres?

‘My childhood was crowded and noisy and loving’: Pam Ayres.

Pam Ayres: ‘I inherited a love of English from my mother’

The poet, 76, talks about deference, dialect and her dreams of becoming a ballerina, and reveals the secret of a happy marriage

It’s important to be yourself in life. Don’t think you have to adapt according to the people or situation you’re in. It’s perfectly all right to be exactly who you are, to like what you like. That’s a lesson it took me a long time to learn.

I grew up in a very feudal village [Stanford in the Vale, Oxfordshire] where a lot of forelock tugging went on. My dad, who worked for the electricity board, would touch his cap to the local landowners, and often apologised for speaking in dialect, as if it was something to be ashamed of. I felt I wasn’t as good as other people – like I was on a lower tier.

I am the youngest of six children. My childhood was crowded and noisy and loving. My siblings and I were a gang, which I loved – everywhere I looked I could see a brother or sister.

My parents’ marriage was troubled, because my dad had awful experiences in the Second World War. He was in the thick of the fighting for four years. There were explosive rows, which frightened us, and he used to have terrible rages. But he was lovely most of the time. He was never strict with me, until I became interested in boys. Then he was very strict indeed.

My mother went into domestic service at 14 and hated it. It was the only option open to her. She had been offered a scholarship to a good school. But her own mother was widowed, with five children, and couldn’t afford to equip my mum to go. It was sad for her. She was capable of a lot more, in my opinion.

I inherited a love of English and writing from my mother. I loved writing from the time I could do it. Mum encouraged me and I got lots of praise. My writing usually finished up on the wall of the classroom, which made me want to do it even more.

I really wanted a pony when I was a child. Of course, there was no hope. I also wanted a dog, but Mum felt she had enough to look after. Instead I had rabbits, chickens, Bantams, a tortoise and various injured birds I didn’t know how to look after properly. My mum used to call it my menagerie. I always loved animals.

I dreamed of becoming a ballerina. As I turned out to be a 5ft 9in Amazonian, it didn’t work out.

I started learning to play the piano at 75 and I recommend it to everyone. I practise every day on a baby grand. I find it so distracting. I can’t think about problems or anything I’m worried about – or frightened of – because I’ve got to think about how these little black dots relate to my fingers. It’s very good for me.

The thing I’m most scared of is losing my capabilities. I have one arthritic finger but I can write, draw, paint, play the piano, read music, sew, knit and garden. I’m afraid of succumbing to the diseases of old age, losing the ability to do those lovely things.

I’m grateful I lived in the era I did. When I was a child, I would hear the cuckoo in the spring, I’d see swifts and swallows migrate and frogspawn in ponds, water voles in streams. And it’s all gone.

If I’m proud of anything I’ve done in my life, it is that I have overcome terrible fear to perform things I’ve written in front of big audiences. Because I won a TV talent show in the 70s, I went from performing my poems and songs to small, friendly audiences in pubs to braving paying audiences of thousands in huge theatres. It was a terrifying transition. My advice for any poet is that you’ve got to be brave and perform your work. The more you do it, the more you can do it.

I’ve been married to my husband for 40 years. The secret to a happy marriage? A good sense of humour.

I’ve never broken the law. I got told off by copper for letting go of the handlebars while riding my bike when I was about nine. Since then, I haven’t even had a speeding ticket.

I’d like to be young and lustrous. I’d rather not look like such a craggy old bird. But there’s not much you can do about getting older.

For the first time Rosatom Fuel Division supplied fresh nuclear fuel to the world’s only floating nuclear cogeneration plant in the Arctic

The fuel was supplied to the northernmost town of Russia along the Northern Sea Route.

pam ayres tour 2023

The first in the history of the power plant refueling, that is, the replacement of spent nuclear fuel with fresh one, is planned to begin before 2024. The manufacturer of nuclear fuel for all Russian nuclear icebreakers, as well as the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, is Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC), a company of Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL that is based in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactors of the icebreaking type. Unlike convenient ground-based large reactors (that require partial replacement of fuel rods once every 12-18 months), in the case of these reactors, the refueling takes place once every few years and includes unloading of the entire reactor core and loading of fresh fuel into the reactor.

The cores of KLT-40 reactors of the Akademik Lomonosov floating power unit have a number of advantages compared to the reference ones: a cassette core was used for the first time in the history of the unit, which made it possible to increase the fuel energy resource to 3-3.5 years between refuelings, and also reduce the fuel component of the electricity cost by one and a half times. The FNPP operating experience formed the basis for the designs of reactors for nuclear icebreakers of the newest series 22220. Three such icebreakers have been launched by now.

For the first time the power units of the Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear power plant were connected to the grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020. The supply of nuclear fuel from Elektrostal to Pevek and its loading into the second reactor is planned for 2024. The total power of the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, supplied to the coastal grid of Pevek without thermal energy consumption on shore, is about 76 MW, being about 44 MW in the maximum thermal power supply mode. The FNPP generated 194 million kWh according to the results of 2023. The population of Pevek is just a little more than 4 thousand, while the FNPP has a potential for supplying electricity to a city with a population of up to 100 thousand people. After the FNPP commissioning two goals were achieved. These include first of all the replacement of the retiring capacities of the Bilibino NPP, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya TPP, which has already been operating for more than 70 years. Secondly, energy is supplied to the main mining companies in western Chukotka in the Chaun-Bilibino energy hub a large ore and metal cluster, including gold mining companies and projects related to the development of the Baimsk ore zone. In September 2023, a 110 kilovolt power transmission line with a length of 490 kilometers was put into operation, connecting the towns of Pevek and Bilibino. The line increased the reliability of energy supply from the FNPP to both Bilibino consumers and mining companies, the largest of which is the Baimsky GOK. The comprehensive development of the Russian Arctic is a national strategic priority. To increase the NSR traffic is of paramount importance for accomplishment of the tasks set in the field of cargo shipping. This logistics corridor is being developed due regular freight voyages, construction of new nuclear-powered icebreakers and modernization of the relevant infrastructure. Rosatom companies are actively involved in this work. Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL (Rosatom Fuel Division) includes companies fabricating nuclear fuel, converting and enriching uranium, manufacturing gas centrifuges, conducting researches and producing designs. As the only nuclear fuel supplier to Russian NPPs, TVEL supplies fuel for a total of 75 power reactors in 15 countries, for research reactors in nine countries, as well as for propulsion reactors of the Russian nuclear fleet. Every sixth power reactor in the world runs on TVEL fuel. Rosatom Fuel Division is the world’s largest producer of enriched uranium and the leader on the global stable isotope market. The Fuel Division is actively developing new businesses in chemistry, metallurgy, energy storage technologies, 3D printing, digital products, and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. TVEL also includes Rosatom integrators for additive technologies and electricity storage systems. Rosenergoatom, Joint-Stock Company is part of Rosatom Electric Power Division and one of the largest companies in the industry acting as an operator of nuclear power plants. It includes, as its branches, 11 operating NPPs, including the FNPP, the Scientific and Technical Center for Emergency Operations at NPPs, Design and Engineering as well as Technological companies. In total, 37 power units with a total installed capacity of over 29.5 GW are in operation at 11 nuclear power plants in Russia. Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC, Elektrostal) is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of fuel for nuclear power plants. The company produces fuel assemblies for VVER-440, VVER-1000, RBMK-1000, BN-600,800, VK-50, EGP-6; powders and fuel pellets intended for supply to foreign customers. It also produces nuclear fuel for research reactors. The plant belongs to the TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom.

However, up to now, the main carriers of catalytic additives have been mineral sorbents: silica gels, alumogels. This is obviously due to the fact that they consist of pure homogeneous components SiO2 and Al2O3, respectively. It is generally known that impurities, especially the ash elements, are catalytic poisons that reduce the effectiveness of the catalyst. Therefore, carbon sorbents with 5-15% by weight of ash elements in their composition are not used in the above mentioned technologies. However, in such an important field as a gas-mask technique, carbon sorbents (active carbons) are carriers of catalytic additives, providing effective protection of a person against any types of potent poisonous substances (PPS). In ESPE “JSC "Neorganika" there has been developed the technology of unique ashless spherical carbon carrier-catalysts by the method of liquid forming of furfural copolymers with subsequent gas-vapor activation, brand PAC. Active carbons PAC have 100% qualitative characteristics of the three main properties of carbon sorbents: strength - 100%, the proportion of sorbing pores in the pore space – 100%, purity - 100% (ash content is close to zero). A particularly outstanding feature of active PAC carbons is their uniquely high mechanical compressive strength of 740 ± 40 MPa, which is 3-7 times larger than that of  such materials as granite, quartzite, electric coal, and is comparable to the value for cast iron - 400-1000 MPa. This allows the PAC to operate under severe conditions in moving and fluidized beds.  Obviously, it is time to actively develop catalysts based on PAC sorbents for oil refining, petrochemicals, gas processing and various technologies of organic synthesis.

Victor M. Mukhin was born in 1946 in the town of Orsk, Russia. In 1970 he graduated the Technological Institute in Leningrad. Victor M. Mukhin was directed to work to the scientific-industrial organization "Neorganika" (Elektrostal, Moscow region) where he is working during 47 years, at present as the head of the laboratory of carbon sorbents.     Victor M. Mukhin defended a Ph. D. thesis and a doctoral thesis at the Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia (in 1979 and 1997 accordingly). Professor of Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia. Scientific interests: production, investigation and application of active carbons, technological and ecological carbon-adsorptive processes, environmental protection, production of ecologically clean food.

PAM AYRES VERMIN FINAL COVER JUNE 2022

Who Are You Calling Vermin?

illustrated by Joel Stewart

Published by Ebury Spotlight on 8th September 2021 in Hardback

Hidden beyond the bluebell woods and babbling brooks, there is great unrest in our countryside. In this lyrical satire, Pam Ayres, a country dweller all her life, highlights the undercurrents simmering beyond the patchwork of fields. We meet the angry fishermen who can’t afford to live in their own villages, the indignant farmers who get the blame for everything and the old man grieving for the unspoilt village of his youth. The animals have their say too, from the persecuted grey squirrel who didn’t want to leave America anyway, the barn owl mourning his now-converted ancient barn, and the humble maligned mole, all of whom come together and demand to know: Who Are You Calling Vermin?

The last hedgehog

To mark and celebrate National Hedgehog Awareness Week, Pam Ayres has written a less-than-fond farewell from the perspective of the ‘last hedgehog left on earth’ – a delightful, hilarious and thought-provoking elegy to that most beloved inhabitant of the British countryside, the common hedgehog.

You Made Me Late Again! : My New Collection

You Made Me Late Again!

With over fifty new poems from Britain’s favourite poet, You Made Me Late Again! is an essential addition to Pam Ayres’ incomparable collection of works. Pam’s poems are observant, witty and poignant in equal measure.

Delightfully illustrated, most of the poems in You Made Me Late Again! are brand new, yet it also features several firm favourites from her stage shows, published for the first time, such as `The Make-up Lady’ and `Tippy Tappy Feet’.

Pam Ayres: The Necessary Aptitude: A Memoir

The Necessary Aptitude: A Memoir

Pam Ayres’ early childhood in Stanford in the Vale was idyllic in many ways, and typical of that experienced by a great swathe of children born in rural areas in the immediate post-war years. Though her parents’ generation was harrowed by war, better times were coming. Everything the family needed was within walking distance in the village, and life with four older brothers and a sister in their crowded council house was exceedingly lively.

In her late teens, Pam grew dissatisfied with her life as a Civil Service clerk with only the local ‘hop’ for scintillating excitement. Having seen three of her brothers called up for National Service and sent off to exciting destinations, Pam felt desperate for travel and adventure. She joined the WRAF and soon found herself in the Far East. There she began to write in earnest, and develop the unique talent that would make her one of Britain’s favourite comics…
