• Directions: From Lihue, head west on Hwy 50 to Port Allen and turn left at McDonald’s (JCT 541 Waialo Rd). Look for Kauai Sea Tours office on the right in the Port Allen Marina Center.

• Please park before you check in. To park, go to the corner, turn right, and park in the Kauai Sea Tours lot on the left.

Overall rating

The captain and crew were outstanding and made the trip very enjoyable. The food portions were on the small side. While the tour was advertised as open bar, it was very limited. It also only opened during the last two ho ... urs of the trip. I found that to be misleading. I would definitely shop around a little more the next time.

Afternoon light is amazing on Na Pali . See rich hues of green, red and black as the setting sun highlights the many sharp ridge lines and valleys that make this coastline unique. After heading North up Na Pali we’ll enjoy a relaxing downwind cruise and sunset at sea. More Hide

The Na Pali Dinner Sunset Sail is our premier "dinner with a view" experience. Sunsets at sea, viewed from the Star are spectacular. Passengers will enjoy a panoramic view of the entire coastline from Haena to Milolii, with the "forbidden" island of Ni'ihau in the distance. Each day is unique, as the light reacts with clouds and landscapes. Rainbows frequently add color to the distant mountains.

The sail starts with a short briefing and introduction as we depart from Port Allen and head West, then North and upwind on the Na Pali (depending on the conditions).

Meanwhile our team of onboard chefs will get busy preparing the fresh meal. Unlike other charter boats, The Star is equipped with a full galley (kitchen) and bar. This means that the meal can be prepared fresh onboard instead of the standard practice of pre-cooking food.

On most days the Hawaiian tradewinds are blowing from the East, which makes for a perfect downwind sail once we reach our turnaround point. The crew's objective on this sail is to position the boat for a calm, downwind sail during dinner service. Once we reach our turnaround, the crew will power down the boat's twin diesels and hoist the massive mainsail and jib. Now you're set up for some sailing, relaxing and yummy food.

We time the sail to pull in at Port Allen near dusk, our goal is to return you to shore safe, happy and full.

Unfortunately, there aren’t many tours that leave from Princeville or Hanalei . Holo Holo Charters used to offer tours from the North Shore, but they recently told us that they sold their vessel to  Hanalei Charters .

Unfortunately, Hanalei Charters does not offer a dinner sunset cruise, but they have a Na Pali Snorkel Adventure if you are interested.

Things to Keep In Mind When Booking a Sunset Cruise in Kauai

• While these tours are sunset cruises, the tour companies cannot guarantee that you will see a perfect sunset due to weather conditions that are out of their control. After all, Mother Nature is unpredictable! We have been on sunset cruises multiple times in Kauai and only had this issue twice. We were still glad to see some dolphins and whales to compensate.
• Be sure to arrive early for check-in. These tours depart on time!
• If you are prone to motion sickness , take the necessary medication prior to departure. Always ask the crew for help if needed. The crew will also tell you the best place to sit if you are prone to motion sickness. Learn from my mistakes; I recently went on a whale-watching tour in Kauai and forgot to take/bring my motion sick medication. Let’s just say the tour started fun, but the last hour was brutal. Don’t be like me! Bring your medication or purchase some when you check in to the tour, as most tour companies will sell some.

The Kaua’i Fire Department has issued a stern warning against swimming or entering the vicinity around Queen’s Bath during the winter months.

This period poses an extremely high risk of danger, including the potential for injuries and even drowning.

Queen’s Bath is scheduled to reopen in the spring when the ocean conditions are considerably safer for visitors.

There is nothing quite like a sunset in Kauai! In this list, I have rounded up the 6 best spots to admire a beautiful sunset in Kauai.

If you’re not familiar with the island, Kauai is an incredibly gorgeous Hawaiian island with a very diverse landscape. From gorgeous beaches to lush forests and roaring waterfalls in Kauai , the island’s beauty never ceases to amaze! We visited at the end of May so this list will be more relevant for Spring and Summer, though I am sure there are some other incredible spots in the Winter.

You can enjoy a sunset in Kauai from pretty much anywhere on the island: you can mix yourself a delicious Hawaiian cocktail , sit outside on your lanai and watch the sky light up in coral and orange tones . But if you’re feeling adventurous, head to one of these amazing spots to watch a Kauai sunset.

Here is our list of the most beautiful spots to watch sunset in Kauai.

8. waimea canyon.

Waimea Canyon, also called the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific”, is a very special spot to watch the sunset on Kauai. As you drive through Waimea Canyon, there are many stops with the most epic viewpoints. While the sun doesn’t actually set over the canyon, the sunset colors bouncing off on the mountains make for some great golden hour photography.

7. Kekaha Beach

West of Kauai

Kekaha Beach is also known as MacArthur Park. It is probably one of the most deserted stretch of sand on the island and a gorgeous spot to watch a Kauai sunset. This beach is wild and untouched, with golden sand and miles of coastline. Keep in mind that the currents are very strong on Kekaha Beach so it is not suitable for swimming.

6. Royal Coconut Coast

East of Kauai

We stumbled onto this sunset spot on our way back to the Lihue airport at the very end of our stay on the island. It was one of those “stop the car and pull over immediately” moments.  At this time of year, the sun actually doesn’t set over the water on the East Coast which created some gorgeous pastel tones in the sky.

5. Polihale Beach

Polihale Beach Park is the furthest you can drive on Kauai before the road ends and the Waimea Canyon begins. Polihale is a wild and remote beach, which can only be accessed after driving on a long dirt road full of rocks and potholes. Very few tourists make it to Polihale so it is the perfect spot for a quiet sunset away from the crowds.

We drove the dirt road to Polihale in our four-wheel-drive rental car. We saw a few people drive it in a regular car but I wouldn’t recommend it if you have a rental. Don’t attempt it if it’s been raining since the road will be very muddy and it might be hard to spot rocks and holes. Bring a picnic and a few beers. Watch the sand turn pink and the last light reflect on the canyon. Teal waves are crashing on the beach as the sun is setting on the horizon. It’s totally magic, and one of the best spots to watch the sunset on Kauai.

4. Poipu Beach Park

South of Kauai

Poipu is one of the most popular spots on Kauai since the beach is usually safe for swimming. Poipu is also one of the best spots to go diving in Hawaii . Located on the south of the island, the cove is surrounded by palm trees which creates a beautiful arch for sunset. The black rocks on the sand and the deep orange colors from this angle make for a very dramatic sunset.

Poipu is a very easily accessible beach, just a few minutes’ walk from the parking lot. It can get pretty busy on weekends but the further you walk towards the end of the beach the quieter it gets. Poipu is an incredible spot to watch a Kauai sunset from the South of the island.

3. Hanalei Bay

North of Kauai

Hanalei is located about a 10-minute drive from Princeville. A huge stretched of beach surrounded by mountains, and the most picture-perfect dock. Hanalei is very close to the restaurants and bars in town and the most popular spot to watch the sunset in Kauai. Expect a bit of a crowd (and some bugs at night so bring bug spray) but it’s really worth it. A true Kauai sunset spot.

2. Ke’e Beach

Ke’e Beach is the furthest spot you can drive on the North Shore of Kauai, all the way to the bottom of the canyon. Ke’e is pretty remote so you will leave most of the crowds behind. The flat black rocks make for some beautiful sunset reflections.

1.Tunnels Beach

Tunnels Beach is by far my favorite sunset spot in Kauai. I am not lying when I say that I left a little piece of my heart on Tunnels Beach. What makes this spot so special is that there is virtually no parking close by for non-locals. To access the beach, you need to park your car on a side street about a mile away from the beach. During sunset time we were pretty much the only people there.

The ocean is a deep teal color thanks to the biggest reef on the island of Kauai. The sky lights up with tones of coral and orange. The waves make the sand sparkle against a backdrop of mountains and waterfalls. It was without a doubt one of the most beautiful sunsets we ever experienced… so if you visit Kauai don’t miss a Kauai sunset on Tunnels Beach.

There are so many reasons to fall in love with Kauai, and one of them is that it is probably the only Hawaiian island that hasn’t been overrun by massive hotels and tons of tourists. "This tour was the ideal experience for exploring the North Shore of Kauai. Captain Steve and his son were so knowledgeable about everything, from the names of the waterfalls to the legends the cliffs and valleys hold. I’ve only done a tour like this once before, and it was on a zodiac boat, which was bumpy and not as enjoyable. This boat was the ideal size to handle the waves, as well as fit into sea caves along the Napoli Coast. Captain Steve was an excellent driver, and we never felt unsafe, even inside caves with big waves. I would highly recommend this family-owned and operated company for your next boat tour."

"My husband and I did the afternoon 4 hour Na Pali coast and snorkel tour. It was the highlight of our time in Kauai! Captain Steve and his co-captain (blanking on her name but she was awesome) were fantastic tour guides. I loved Captain Steve's personal touches to every story he told about the coast as well as his knowledge and understanding of the ocean. He took us through sea caves and gave us a taste of the Na Pali "Rollercoaster Ride." The snorkeling was awesome too! Both of them gave clear instructions about safety and frequently checked on passengers to make sure everyone was feeling OK. In addition to the actual tour, their website explains exactly what you get and gives accurate information about what to expect. We went during a time when Kuhio highway to Hanalei was under construction due to a landslide a few months prior and there was a limited amount of time to get into the area. It was clearly stated on the website along with the time you needed to make the trip. The booking staff did a great job communicating with us about what to expect and was very helpful. I cannot say enough great things about this tour and company! Definitely recommend!!"

Captain Steve and his mate Dave were fantastic, super informative and fun, and they took us into coves and caves that we’d missed before. The lunch was surprisingly good!
