Young red haired woman having her hair curled with modern electric triple barrel curling iron in a h...

A wave iron is one of the simplest ways to get perfectly imperfect tousled beach waves, however, your results can change depending on the style of the hot tool you use. The best hair wavers for beach waves will typically have multiple barrels (or curved, jagged sections) that clamp down onto each other, leaving your tresses looking naturally lived in. They will also have adjustable temperature settings so you can maximize your styling to your hair type.

When shopping for a hair waver, first consider the type of waves you're going for. A triple-barrel iron, which features three equally sized, elongated barrels, will not only let you make your way around your full head of hair faster, but the thicker barrels will give you the most classic, voluminous beachy waves. But if you're a fan of versatility, you can get more bang for your buck with a similar model that has an adjustable plate. That clever feature lets you go as defined or as loose as you want.

For the most laid-back, loosest waves (think old Hollywood style), look for a curvier S-shaped plate. And, of course, if portability matters to you, there are even lightweight, mini versions that work as well as their full-sized counterparts.

The best part about these hot tools? You operate them essentially the same way you do flat iron or an old-school crimper , which means that even the most amateur of at-home stylists can master the technique. Just hold the tool horizontally around a section of your hair and clamp down for about 30 seconds. With each press, your hair will bend in the shape of the plate and then you would simply move down the length of your hair as you go.

Keeping scrolling to shop the best deep wavers to give you the undone look of your dreams.

The Overall Best Hair Waver For Beach Waves

Bed Head A Wave We Go Adjustable Deep Waver

As far as versatility goes, the Bed Head A-Wave-We-Go Waver is the best hair waver of the bunch because you can create multiple styles depending on how it's configured. Simply turn the dial on the top and the center barrel will raise up or down — the lowest level will produce the most defined, mermaid-like waves, and the highest level is for deeper ones.

The hot tool also features tourmaline ceramic plates and adjustable heat settings (from 250 to 400 degrees Fahrenheit). And there's an auto-off function, which is handy if you tend to forget to turn your styling tools off when you're done.

Enthusiastic Amazon review: “I love the speed with which I can do my hair with this waver. Using a traditional curling iron takes me much longer and often gives my hair that overstyled, helmet head look. This gives me loose beach waves that look just messy enough to come across as natural. [...] I highly recommend.”

The Best Classic Triple Barrel Iron For Beach Waves

Alure Three Barrel Curling Iron Wand

The Alure three barrel curling iron comes highly rated by over 1,300 Amazon reviewers because it's "super easy" to use and "makes perfect waves." Hair will be able to weave in and out of the three tourmaline ceramic barrels quickly and effortlessly thanks to its slightly oversized design (each barrel is 4 inches long and 1 inch thick).

It also has an LCD display that lets you choose your temperature, however, keep in mind that several Amazon reviewers report that that the readings only show up in Celsius (the range goes from 80 to 210 degrees, which translates to 176 to 410 degrees Fahrenheit).

Enthusiastic Amazon review: “Love this curler, gives the perfect beach waves. It’s super easy to use and heats up fast. The tips are insulated so no accidentally burning your fingers! I would definitely recommend”

The Best Hair Waver For Loose Beach Waves

Bed Head Makin’ Waves "S" Waver

For the least defined beachy look, reach for the Bed Head Makin’ Waves "S" Waver . Inside the two tourmaline-ceramic clamps you'll notice a curvy "S" shape — those wider set barrels will deliver the softest, most relaxed waves of any of the picks on this list. You can choose from multiple heat settings ( from 284 to 400 degrees Fahrenheit), and when you're done, the barrels lock together for easy storage. Several Amazon reviewers, whose hair types fall into multiple categories — thin, coarse, frizzy, short, long, et cetera — all give this model high praise for how easy it is to use and its ability to create "gorgeous," long-lasting waves.

Enthusiastic Amazon review: “This was the best hair tool I have ever bought, this is so worth the money! It gives the prettiest beach waves and super easy to use!”

A Travel-Friendly Mini Waver For Beach Waves

Conair Mini Waver

There's no need to pack a heavier hot tool when you can throw this mini waver into your bag instead. This cute travel-friendly device only takes 30 seconds to heat up to 375 degrees Fahrenheit, so you won't be waiting around to start your styling session. Though there's only that one temperature setting to choose from, the ceramic barrels will still provide a gentle, even heat. Just note that this is not dual-voltage, so if you plan to take it on vacation abroad you'll need the proper adapter.

Enthusiastic Amazon review: “I love this little waving iron!! It’s small, making it easy to use and handle. Plus it heats up quickly.”

9 Easy Ways To Get The Best Beachy Waves Ever, According To Expert Tutorials

Even if you don’t have a curling iron.

8 Easiest Ways To Wave Your Hair

Meet the expert: Bryce Scarlett is a celebrity hairstylist

“I'm really passionate about all natural hair textures and different ways of creating natural looking hair textures,” says celebrity hairstylist Bryce Scarlett. As the mane man behind Kaia Gerber, Gigi Hadid and Lily Rose Depp, to name a few, he’s aced getting practically every type of beachy wave out there.

One of the best things about beachy waves is there are so many styles that fall in the category, so you can make the look your own. “When people request beach waves, they're usually referring to soft waves with straighter ends created by wrapping hair around a wand iron or bending into the hair with a flat iron,” Scarlett says. His go-to technique and preferred tool is using a flatiron. “I love the Moroccanoil Perfectly Polished Titanium Flat Iron —its beveled edges and pressure set plates make it so easy to gently bend into the hair,” he notes.

Scarlett's top tips for achieving beach waves:

Prep with product. “I use a hydrating serum or leave-in conditioner on the ends of the hair and then a dry texturizing spray throughout,” Scarlett says.

Experiment with what works for your hair type. “If you have very fine hair, a salt spray may be a great approach to try,” Scarlett says. “Don’t be afraid to try layering products either. I often use dry shampoo, dry texture spray, hairspray, and a pomade.”

Aim for im perfection. “When trying to achieve beach waves or any natural looking hair texture, the biggest mistake you can make is being afraid of making mistakes—nothing should be too perfect or symmetrical.”

To help you get beachy waves at home, check out these tutorials that take out all the guesswork.

1. How to Get Curling Wand Beach Waves

The most traditional way to get beachy waves is with a curling iron or wand. If you have curls, you'll have to straighten your hair as a first step. From there, divide your hair into big sections to avoid creating tighter individual curls. Then, opt for a barrel approximately one inch in diameter, like this wand from Bed Head , and apply a heat protectant to your hair before styling. Lift your roots slightly while you style, and avoid wrapping your hair around the barrel too tightly. Shake out your hair or throw on some texture spray (like this one from Oribe ), and you’re ready to go.

2. How to Get Loose Beach Waves

A curling iron, like this SinglePass one from T3 , might be a little more user-friendly compared to the wand method above. This video breaks down getting loose waves into an easy-to-follow, foolproof method.

Start by brushing out your hair and separating it into four sections. Then, gently wrap your strands around the barrel starting at the midpoint of your hair. Depending on your length, you may only need to do one to two loops around the barrel before moving the iron through the curl in a downward motion as you reach your ends. If you have oily hair, finish with a dry shampoo to add texture and volume.

3. How to Get S-Shaped Beach Waves

You can create beautiful, s-shaped beachy bends with a few simple steps—and all you need is a ceramic flat iron and a heat protectant . If you have curls, start by straightening your hair. Feel free to do two passes if needed. Then, part your hair in small sections. You can use the flat iron to create effortless-looking bends by rotating the iron back and forth as you glide it down each section of hair. For final touches, add some hairspray or edge control .

4. How to Get Overnight Beach Waves

Talk about beauty sleep—you can even get beach waves while you snooze. Skip the hot tools and wait until your hair is 90 percent dry before you prep it at bedtime. Start by leaving the front pieces of your hair out. Then, flip your head over like you’re going to make a high ponytail on top of your head, separate into three equal sections, and make a regular braid. Making it too tight will prevent volume, so leave an inch and a half out at the bottom. Finally, secure it with an elastic. In the morning, gently unravel the braid and shake out your hair from the roots.

5. How to Get a Basic Flatiron Wave

It can be tough to imagine using a flatiron for curling your hair when it’s designed to straighten it. However, there’s a reason flatiron waves are a thing, and while it might sound counterintuitive, they’re super easy to do. This quick video from Moroccanoil shows you the basic moves. Just place a small section of your hair between the plates, close the iron, and wrap your hair around the outside of the flatiron. For loose waves, don't hold the hair still for too long. Once you're ready, twist the iron slightly, and begin gliding it downward through the section.

6. How to Get Headband Beach Waves

No heat? No problem! Leave it to Luxy Hair to come up with yet another genius beauty hack for beach waves that don't require heat styling. Using a cotton headband, like one from Kenz Laurenz , twist and wrap your hair around the base of the band to achieve that undone, straight-off-the-sand look. For extra hold, use a blow dryer on the cold or warm to really set it in place. Add a bit of your favorite hair oil or wax for extra shine.

7. How to Do Beach Waves On Short Hair

Although it might take some practice, creating textured waves on even the shortest of hairstyles can be done. All it requires is a one-inch curling iron and a flick of the wrist. Rather than starting at the midpoint of your hair, start closer to the root. The longer you hold the hair in the iron, the more defined it will be. Pro tip: After you finish curling your entire head, generously spritz it with a flexible-hold hairspray before you brush out the curls to ensure they stay.

8. How to Get Beach Waves In Five Minutes

Beachy waves don’t typically start at the root, so it makes total sense to curl from your ponytail (opt for an elastic that won’t create creases ). This hack can also help if you have thick hair that makes it harder to section it off or reach the back pieces. Plus, it’s an amazing time-saver. Start with a heat protector and separate your ponytail into sections. Then, with your iron, curl your strands, starting as close to your hair tie as possible. Follow up with the scrunch method to enhance your curl as each piece cools down. You can leave your hair in a ponytail or touch up the pieces that frame your face. Use a comb or your fingers to add volume or break the curls up.

9. How to Get Beach Waves With Braids

If you’re ready to level up your beach wave game, consider adding a braid—or two. This video demo, from celebrity hairstylist Sarah Potempa ’s Beachwaver brand, shows you how to get a crown braid look, then emphasize it with beach waves. Rather than starting from the top, Potempa begins at the bottom and curls up the hair shaft. The result: tight curls that frame the face for the perfect formal event.

7 Effortless Beach Waves Hairstyles—and How to Do Them Yourself

We asked celebrity hairstylists to share their best tips on bringing the beach to your hair.

travel beach wave

There's lots to love about the beach—the sun on your face, the fresh sea-salt smell, and the soothing white noise of crashing waves. And then there are the beauty benefits—a beach day nourishes your skin with vitamin D and inadvertently sets you up with a beach waves hairstyle: lived-in, textured, and just plain cool.

Alas, most of us can't spend every morning lounging on the beach for the sake of a good hair day, but you can create those beautiful beach waves at home. You'll probably need more product than you're used to and, in some cases, more than one product at a time. Read on to learn from our pros about the right tools, products, and techniques to create the beach-look hairstyle at home.

What Are Beach Waves?

Real beach hair is different from what most hashtag results show, according to Paul Cucinello, celebrity hairstylist and co-founder of Cucinello Beauty . "It's more of that surprise you get when you come out of the saltwater and run your fingers through your hair with leftover suntan lotion," he explains.

"If you have any kind of natural wave to your hair, you'll probably discover that it looks really good when you do less intentional styling to it for a change," Cucinello continues. "The heat from the sun coupled with salty beach air is like letting nature give you a beautiful blowout." It's a style that is the complete opposite of another popular trend—sleek, straight, liquid hair .

Barely-there, Lived-in Beach Waves

These subtle waves make you look like you just came from the ocean.

What You Need:

  • Volumizing hair spray
  • Waving wand

Instructions

To create this look, generously mist damp hair with a thickening volume spray like Cucinello Beauty Arouse Thickening Volume Spray ($48, cucinellobeauty.com ) or Oribe Volumista Mist for Volume ($44, amazon.com ). "Flip your head over and blast hair about 80 percent dry, then flip your head back over and create a U-shaped section from the points of recession to the crown and clip away," says Cucinello.

"Using a large waving wand, take about eight random 1-inch sections and wrap them around the wand in a stretched-out coil," Cucinello explains. "Continue your way around the head alternating directions forward and back. Drop the top section down and create a short center part, about 2 inches."

Continue with your waving wand on about six 1-inch sections, making sure to leave the ends out and letting the top of the section fall straight back to give you some extra-beachy volume. "Finish with a light mist of thickening volume spray all over and gently scrunch hair to break up waves," Cucinello concludes.

Flat-iron Beach Waves Using a Bending Technique

This technique creates a more subtle wave, and you can even use it to create just a slight bend.

  • Flat-iron hair straightener
  • Dry texturizer

Using a flat iron, "Start on dry hair and drop down sections 1 inch at a time," says LA-based celebrity hairstylist Clariss Rubenstein . "Starting at the root, bend the hair in one direction, then the other, dramatically flipping your wrist under and up and moving your way down the hair shaft until you get to the end," Rubenstein explains. Finish by shaking out waves with your fingers and apply a dry texturizer, like Unite Hair Texturiza Spray ($35, amazon.com ).

Beach Waves on Curly or Textured Hair

Recreating believable, beachy waves requires lots of varying textures—some curls, some waves, and a few strategically placed braided pieces. Try using a combination of techniques on top of your natural hair pattern.

  • Curl sculpting cream
  • Curling iron

"Prep dry hair with a quarter-sized amount of curl sculpting cream evenly distributed throughout, like Cucinello Beauty Money $hot Curl & Style Manipulator ($34, cucinellobeauty.com ) or R+Co Turntable Curl Defining Créme ($34, randco.com )," says Cucinello. "Using a waving wand, a curling iron, and a deep waver, take chunks and alternate tools and placement—place some waves high and some curls only at the midshaft."

Add a few smaller braids around the hairline to replicate the tighter wave patterns that usually occur around the nape of the neck, temples, and sideburns. "Give hair a light mist of dry spray at the roots and then undo the braids," suggests Cucinello. "Finish with a dime-sized amount of the same curl sculpting cream scrunched into hair to combine textures."

Beach Waves Using Twirling Technique

No curling iron? No hair dryer? No electricity? No problem. Achieve this natural-looking style with just spray and clips.

  • Dry texturizing spray
  • Small hairclips
  • Misting spray bottle (for water)
  • Diffuser and hair dryer (optional)
  • Styling hairspray (optional)

Starting with day-old, dry hair, spray your roots with a dry texturizing spray . "Beginning at and rotating around your part, lightly mist hair with water to slightly dampen, but not soak," says Cucinello. "Then, take 1-inch chunks and twist them until they look like loose ropes."

Next, use small clips to clip the ends of each twist up to its own base until the next section is revealed. "Continue lightly misting each new section with water, then repeat the twists using larger and smaller sections and clipping them up," Cucinello continues. "Once all your sections are done (and your arms feel like they're going to fall off), spray your entire head with a generous coat of dry spray." Let your hair set until each section feels dry to the touch.

If you prefer, speed things up with a diffuser and hairdryer set to low speed and high heat. "Remove all the clips, dropping sections from the nape of the neck moving up to the part," says Cucinello. "Flip your head over and shake twists out by massaging your scalp with your fingertips and shaking hands through hair stopping mid-shaft." To finish, flip your hair back over and lightly mist it with a workable hair spray like the DesignME Hold.Me Three Way Hair Spray ($19, amazon.com ) or Sachajuan Moulding Spray ($30, amazon.com ).

Flat-iron Beach Waves Using an "S" Technique

Use this technique to create a flatter, less voluminous, imperfect wave.

  • Hair texturizer

Starting with dry hair, place 1-inch sections in a flat iron like Dyson Corrale Hair Straightener ($499, sephora.com ). "Instead of bending it in the way you would usually do a flat iron wave, keep it flat and create an 'S' pattern with the hair, opening and closing the iron on it consistently," suggests Rubenstein. "Continue this pattern down the hair shaft."

After your entire head is done, rake out waves with your hands and add texturizer. "R+Co Badlands Dry Shampoo Paste ($34, amazon.com ) makes hair nice and beachy with a little grit—I love this product," says Rubenstein.

Mermaid Beach Waves

Mermaid waves , one of the most requested versions of beach waves, are easier to create than you might think.

  • Three-barrel curling iron

"3-barrel curling irons are the pro's go-to secret weapon for making realistic ripples on longer hair—I use BondiBoost Wave Wand ($58, bondiboost.com )," says Cucinello.

"The key to using them is to make sure that each wave begins where the last wave ends…and most importantly, leave the ends out," Cucinello insists. The straighter ends keep it looking beachy instead of like you're going to prom.

Beach Waves with Overnight Braids

If you can braid, you can intentionally achieve this unintentional, imperfect-looking style.

  • Lightweight styling cream
  • Two snag-free elastic bands

To create this look, start with dry hair and divide it in half imperfectly, so it looks unintentional. "Rub a quarter-sized amount of lightweight styling cream between your hands and evenly rake it through both sides of your hair—I use Cucinello Beauty Re:Touch Smooth Texture Upgrade ($56, cucinellobeauty.com ) or JVN Complete Hydrating Air Dry Hair Cream ($26, sephora.com )," says Cucinello.

"Roll each side back, starting at the hairline, and create two loose French braids, securing the ends with a snag-free elastic band like Blax Snag-Free Clear Elastic Bands ($7, amazon.com )," Cucinello explains. Allow hair to set until dry and then undo braids by raking fingers through your hair in a downward motion.

8 Easy Ways to Make Perfect Beach Waves Every Time

You can get the style with a straightener, curling iron, wand — or without heat.

Beach waves have only grown in popularity over the years because of their versatility. "They are the perfect balance between curls and straight hair and work for almost every hair length and type of situation, from a presentation at work to a night out," she explains. "Plus, beach waves add volume and movement to your hair, with the front pieces drawing attention up to your eyes and accentuating your cheekbones."

So what tool is ideal for making beach waves? A curling iron, experts say (Potempa recommends her Beachwaver, a Good Housekeeping Beauty Award- winning self-rotating curling iron). The key is in how it's used. First, know that the smaller the curling iron's barrel, the tighter the wave will be, she advises (think 3/4 inch for tight waves, 1 inch for classic beach waves, and 1 1/4 inch for loose, voluminous waves). Here's how to create beach waves with a curling iron, according to Potempa:

  • Prep hair by spritzing a heat protectant spray all over.
  • Se ction off hair into the top and bottom, then separate strands into the left and right side.
  • Hold the curling iron upright with the clamp facing forward, place a one to two inch section of hair into the clamp, leaving an inch or two of the ends out to create a beachy wave, then twist the iron away from your face.
  • Once the iron reaches the crown of your head , hold for three to four seconds, then open the clamp and pull the iron straight down to release.
  • Repeat on the left and right sides. Avoid touching your curls until they are completely cool (touching strands that are still warm can loosen the curl and will cause it to fall flat), she says.
  • Spray a flexible hold hairspray onto a brush , then gently brush out your waves. Apply a finishing cream to the ends of hair if needed to tame any flyaways, Potempa suggests.

This is just one method of many for getting great beach waves, as you can see below: The secret is pairing the right hair products and tools with these genius styling tips from our favorite hair pros and the experts in the Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab. Bonus: Each one of these beach wave tutorials for long , medium and short hair takes less than 10 minutes — some as little as two. Double bonus: Some can be done overnight and naturally without heat, so they don't even require a curling iron, wand or hair straightener !

How to Get Beach Waves Naturally Without Heat

If you're all about that low-maintenance hair routine, you're probably no stranger to the good ol' air dry. And it works to make waves, too: With a few strategically placed buns (two at the nape of your neck!), you can air dry your way to a California girl look without heat. Just twist hair into two knots, secure them in place with pins, then wait it out until they're dry. That's it!

To boost the bends, before you start forming the buns, apply a styling product made to enhance your air-dried strands while hair is damp.

How to Get Beach Waves with a Straightener or Flat Iron

This wave styling trick incorporates a flat iron into the mix rather than a curling iron — a choice that, as YouTube beauty vlogger HeyKali says, makes the waves look extra shiny. If you have thick, long hair , this tutorial might take longer than the others, but your flawless waves will be totally worth it.

The secret: Make sure your flat iron is facing down to the floor rather than horizontally. For even more gloss, mist dry hair with a shine-enhancing finishing spray as a last step.

How to Get Beach Waves on Long Hair

You've probably been told that if you want small, tight curls , you should use a skinnier curling iron, and if you want large, looser waves, you should use a large barrel curler, right? Well, YouTube beauty guru Luxy Hair is about to blow your mind.

As she demonstrates in this video, if you break your hair into large sections and use a small barrel curling iron, you can quickly and efficiently curl all of your long hair into voluminous waves.

How to Get Beach Waves on Short Hair

Getting beach waves on short hair can be trickier than with long hair. Still, this very easy beach waves tutorial is simple to follow and takes less than 10 minutes. Use a 1-inch curling iron on a low heat setting and work from the front in vertical sections, alternating directions as you get toward the undermost layers to keep the style from looking too coiffed.

GH Beauty Lab pros recommend setting your style so it lasts and stays frizz-free by misting a medium- to strong-hold hairspray all over, holding the can about six inches away from your head for a light application.

How to Get Beach Waves Overnight

Ever dreamt of waking up with perfect hair without having to waste time styling (or use potentially damaging hot tools)? This is the hack for you. All you need is a fabric belt (one from a bathrobe works great) and four hair ties.

To perfect waves, section hair in half and in each section, twist hair around the belt piece by piece, securing at the end with a hair tie. Then twist the entire section into a bun. Repeat on the other side. Wake up, unwind, and finish with hair spray. Done!

How to Get Beach Waves on Medium-Length Hair

If you have medium-length hair, YouTuber Allan Davison's pull-through technique is ideal. Section hair and use a 1-inch barrel curling iron to add a bend at the middle of the hair's length and smooth out the ends for a perfectly tousled, undone wave.

Finish with dry shampoo at the roots and texturizing spray through the ends for volume, and a drop of hydrating oil on the ends to keep hair looking healthy .

How to Get Messy Beach Waves

A key feature of beachy waves is that they begin about halfway down your hair, around ear level (this helps give a messy, undone effect). A genius shortcut: Pulling hair into a ponytail and curling just the tied section with a curling wand. This makes it easier to keep track of which pieces you've curled (versus those you haven't) when your strands are gathered in one place. Finish with by spritzing texturizing spray all over hair to encourage a natural, blended style and a flexible hairspray to keep everything in place.

How to Get Beach Waves with a Curling Wand

A curling wand is perfect for creating imperfect, gorgeous waves. The GH Beauty Lab says that's because unlike a curling iron, a wand allows for ends keep their natural texture. The key to this look: Leaving a few inches of the ends of hair unstyled.

Start by misting a heat protectant and then hairspray all over dry hair and brushing through. Then, using a 1-inch barrel curling wand, grab vertical sections of hair and wrap around, leaving two inches of ends out to prevent hair from looking over-styled. Alternate directions as you go and finish with a sea salt wave spray and a light finish hairspray.

It's a look that just screams effortlessly chic. And it suits just about every cut —from short bobs to medium-length locks, and tresses that go right down to your tush. Beach waves work on a multitude of different hair types, too . They breathe volume into limp, thin strands and tame and defrizz thicker, coarser hair.

The problem? If you've ever tried to give yourself beachy waves with a curling wand or flat iron , you know that recreating the style is not exactly a walk in the park. Overdo it, and you'll end up with big, bouncy curls that don't have the same natural vibe you're going for. And—hang on—how in the world do you twist your wrist just so ?

There's a definite science to it, but luckily, with the right products and technique, anyone can get beach waves at home. Here, professional stylist Gina Rivera , founder of Phenix Salons , shows us how to master beautiful beachy waves.

First, prep your strands.

Start by prepping your wet hair with a volumizing mousse. Put a quarter-sized dollop in your hands (a bit less if your hair is short), then use your fingertips to massage the product into the roots of your hair. Allow your hair to air dry.

Then, split hair into sections.

Section hair horizontally, from bottom to top, pinning the rest of your hair up and out of the way as you go. For finer hair, split into three sections total; for thicker hair, split into four sections total.

Now, the hard part: executing those beachy waves...

With the bottom section of hair down and the rest pinned up, use a curling iron or a flatiron to create waves on that first section of hair. No matter which tool you use, it's important to style small one- to two-inch pieces of hair at a time in each section.

If you have thinner hair...

Those with finer hair should use a smaller barrel iron, approximately one inch in diameter, styling smaller one-inch pieces at a time.

If you have thicker hair...

Those with thicker hair should start with at least a 1.5-inch barrel curling iron, styling larger two-inch pieces at a time.

Note: The same rule applies to flat irons—the thicker the hair, the easier it is to use a wider, larger iron.

Place the iron a few inches down the hair shaft.

For perfect beachy waves, avoid starting at the scalp. Instead, start styling the hair a few inches down the hair shaft, depending on the length. For shorter hair, start a bit higher; for longer hair, a bit lower.

Twist the hair.

Twist the hair around the styling tool, leaving an inch or two out at the end of your strands. As you curl each piece, alternate the direction you're twisting. First, style one strand counter-clockwise towards the face, then style one strand clockwise away from the face.

Repeat until every section of hair is curled. This creates that more natural "I woke up like this" look.

Let curls cool.

After a few minutes, once curls are cool to the touch, gently run your fingers through the hair. To create more volume, run your fingers through the hair from underneath, rather than over top—and avoid using a comb or a brush.

Finish things off with setting spray.

To keep curls in place longer, finish the style with a setting spray. A few spritzes throughout the hair should do the trick.

Review: Beachwaver B1

i've never owned a traditional curling iron. Whenever I consider buying one, I'm always reminded of my failed grade school attempts. There weren't enough YouTube tutorials in the world that could help me figure out how to achieve the perfect ringlets. I couldn't comprehend the proper technique—how much hair goes between the clamp? Which way do I twist a strand? How long do I hold it for? I was always left with the same limp, awkward-looking, unfinished result.

For over a decade, I used flat irons to settle for beachy waves, instead of perfect ringlets. Since 2020, I used the Dyson Corralle flat iron (which also doubles as a curling iron), but it unfortunately stopped working last year. I replaced it with the Dyson Airstrait —the company's first wet-to-dry hair straightener—however, the plates were too wide to be used for curling hair. This threw me into a desperate search for a replacement hair tool.

But what I found was even better: a curling iron that gave me both waves and the spiraled strands I've dreamed of since middle school. It's called the Beachwaver B1 and it's a rotating curling iron. Depending on your algorithm, you might've seen the viral videos all over your TikTok's For You page—partly because the company clearly has a massive influencer marketing budget , but also because it actually works. All you have to do is clamp your hair, press a button, watch as your hair automatically wraps around the wand, and then let go to see a beautiful, bouncy curl. It eliminated all the guesswork and frustration that has been curling my hair.

Person holding the Beachwaver B1 curling iron

The Beachwaver B1 comes with a 1-inch ceramic barrel, a short clamp, and an ergonomic handle that's easy to hold. Weighing in at 1 pound, it's lightweight too. This makes it easier to use for long periods, but also convenient to travel with—it doesn't weigh down my duffle bag or backpack when I take it on trips. While it's durable, Beachwaver does offer a storage pouch you can buy separately (it's currently in my cart) to help protect it.

The handle has two buttons. At the top, two left and right arrows are built into the same button for rotational control of the barrel. Then there's the power button at the bottom—long-press it to turn the hair tool on or off and short-press to cycle between the heat settings.

It has a 30-minute automatic shut-off, which is a great feature for those who forget to turn their hair tools off—or obsessively second-guess if they did once they leave the house. You'll also have the choice between three temperatures—low (290 degrees Fahrenheit), medium (350 degrees), and high (410 degrees). You'll know which heat setting you're on, based on whether the first, second, or third LED is illuminated.

On the bottom, right beneath the barrel, is also a built-in stand. That way, you don't have to worry about burning any surfaces when you put the curling iron down while it's hot. It's a feature you don't always find on all curling irons , but it makes a huge difference—especially if you don't have tons of counter space in your bathroom. The stand helps to balance it on even the smallest sliver of space.

At first glance, the B1 seems pretty simple to use. But it does require some patience—something I wasn't prepared for at first. I figured that one random TikTok I watched a few weeks ago would let me get the hang of it. I was very mistaken. My hair looked like a mess. The strands were a mix of crimped, wavy, and straight, and the left side looked way different than the right. I also had multiple crease marks in my hair from where the clamp was, despite the Beachwaver's “no-kink” clamp that's designed to prevent this.

Determined to make it work, I sat down and watched more TikToks under the “Beachwaver Curler” search term. There are plenty of tutorials to pick from, but Beachwaver B1 has a bunch of easy-to-follow videos on its official TikTok account. If you just can't seem to make the hair tool work, I highly suggest sitting down for a bit and scrolling through videos to get familiar with the process.

Once I felt comfortable, I picked the B1 up and tried again. I had to master clamping my hair in the right place, holding the curling iron at the correct angle, and holding my hair to the iron for enough time. After only a few weeks, I felt like I finally understood the mechanics.

Person holding the Beachwaver B1 curling iron

Whenever I'm curling my hair, I typically follow the same routine. I separate my hair into sections, putting the top layer in a bun. I'll grab a narrow strip of hair, clamp it slightly above the ends, and press the arrow while moving the curling iron toward the root as it rotates. For a tight curl, I'll count to about 10 seconds before I open the clamp and slide the iron out downward. For a beachy wave, I'll hold it for three to five seconds. Once the bottom layer is done, I'll repeat the same steps throughout the rest of my hair.

As for that “no-kink” clamp, I realized it was because of how I was clamping my hair. Thanks to yet another TikTok tutorial , I learned that you're supposed to clamp it around the curve of the hair in the direction you're curling your hair. Whenever I'm cognizant of how I'm clamping it, I never experience any creases.

As with any hair tool, it's important to talk about my specific hair type. I have a mix of wavy, naturally curly hair that has a coarse feel to it. It typically requires a lot of heat, not only to reduce frizziness and puffiness but for the curls to hold. If your hair texture is similar to mine, I recommend going over it with a flat iron before curling it. It helps make for smoother curls and keeps the volume at a minimum (I'm not trying to achieve that '80s big hair look).

I've only ever used the B1 on the highest heat setting (410 degrees). It holds the curl super well, but it loosens as time goes on—which I prefer. If you want to keep the tighter curl throughout the day, for a more dramatic look, I suggest using hairspray after curling each strand and then also after you're done. Although 410 degrees is certainly hot, it might not be enough heat, depending on how thick or coarse your hair is. I would prefer the ability to make it slightly hotter for more defined curls.

I'd also recommend applying a heat protectant to your hair before going in with the curling iron. Since I've been using the Dyson Airstrait for almost a year now (which doesn't have heat plates), my hair isn't used to that much direct heat. Sometimes, a burnt-hair smell reminds me that I need a barrier to protect it from heat damage. It's become less strong the more I use the B1 (eight months in, and it's barely noticeable now), however, it's still slightly there. I have yet to find a heat protectant that doesn't leave my hair feeling greasy and sticky, but this has expedited my search.

When I first started using the B1 curling iron last summer, I had just cut several inches off my hair, bringing it to just above my shoulders. The 1-inch barrel size was perfect for that length because I had shorter hair, which took less time to style. But my hair has grown past my boobs since then, and using such a thin barrel takes forever to get through my now longer hair. I'll usually block out 30 minutes to get through all of it.

If your hair is on the longer side, and you simply don't have that much time for curling it each day, I would recommend opting for the bigger barrel , which is the 1.25 version . It likely won't give you those tighter, corkscrew curls that you'd get with the smaller barrel, but you'll be able to curl larger chunks of hair, which will reduce the amount of time it takes to curl your entire head. I've attempted to do this with the 1-inch barrel (multiple times) when I've been in a rush, and it leaves my hair looking messy and uneven.

Person holding the Beachwaver B1 curling iron

The 1.25-inch barrel comes in two versions. The Beachwaver S1.25 ($149 ) has a heat range of 290 to 410 degrees, a digital display for the temperature, and a Home button that resets the clamp after rotating. (If your hair is super short, there's also the Beachwaver S.75 .) The Beachwaver Pro 1.25 ($229) has a heat range of 310 to 450 degrees, a digital display, and the ability to lock the barrel so that it only rotates in one direction.

If you're still a bit wary of the viral Beachwaver B1, the Revamp Progloss Hollywood Automatic ($120) is a great alternative—it's also our favorite easy-to-use curler in our Best Curling Irons guide. Rather than rotating your hair around a barrel, you feed the end of your hair inside the curler's chamber and it automatically wraps your hair around the internal hot rod (it rotates right and left like the Beachwaver too). It works with all types of hair lengths and is capable of both loose waves and tighter curls.

Those who are worried about heat damage, and have plenty of room in their budget, should opt for the Dyson Airwrap ($600) . It uses hot air instead of hot metal, and it automatically wraps your hair around the barrel without having to twist it onto the hair tool manually. That steep price also comes with interchangeable parts, including various hot brushes in addition to two curling barrels. We're also currently testing the T3 Curlwrap ($200) , which has an automatic rotating iron.

I'm content with my Beachwaver B1, specifically because it's been a great introduction to how a curling iron works. After using it for over half a year, I started to grasp how to use it without the rotating feature. I'm not sure I'll ever abandon the automatic rotation for a traditional version, but it's nice to know that I likely can if I'm stuck in a hotel room without my own tool. In the meantime, I'll upgrade to the Beachwaver S1.25 to accommodate my longer locks.

4 Easy Ways to Get Beach Waves, According to a Celebrity Hairstylist

beach waves

"Creating beach waves at home is all about prepping the hair with product and using a diffuser or letting hair air dry before adding texture with an iron or curling wand," he explains. "The more irregular random waves that result from air drying and ironing are what makes the hair look beachy. A few straight ends here and there and casual, wavy pieces throughout."

Not all beach waves are made equal. But Trygstad, who counts celebs like Emma Roberts and Laura Dern as clients, has a simple criteria. "Beach waves would be described as an elongated wave," he adds. "The shape of the wave usually follows a more natural wave pattern with straighter ends. The style should like you’ve dipped in the ocean and dried your hair in the sun."

Ahead, Trygstad breaks down his favorite easy ways to achieve beach waves.

Flat iron braids.

One of the quickest ways to get an easy wave is with a flat iron. Start off by creating two three-strand braids and secure with hair ties. "Using a flat iron on the medium heat setting, press the iron open and closed along the braid, working from the top-bottom," Trygstad advises.

Use a wave iron.

The Beach Waver is a favorite tool to create waves. "Its unique design creates more of an elongated wave versus a curl," Trygstad explains. "Use a lightweight, matte hair spray, like R+Co. Outer Space sprayed throughout before ironing."

Grab your curling iron.

Trygstad's favorite method is using a good ol' curling iron. "I like to diffuse the hair first and then add beach waves with a curling wand. 1 1/4 is my favorite size curling iron— a bigger iron will prevent the hair from getting too curly. I love using Apres Beach by Oribe, Cold-pressed Watermelon Spray by R+Co or Bumble and Bumble Surf." For a quick beachy look, take two-inch, large sections to create loose waves. "This is also a great way to bring dimension in hair color to life," he adds.

Sleep on it.

Get waves with no heat or damage. Before bedtime, divide hair into two braids and secure with hair ties. Sleep and release braids in the morning. "Braiding hair before bed will add texture while you sleep," Trygstad says.

Every chance we get, we take it, just take that trip, no matter how long or how far we go, what matters is- that we take the time and do it. 2 New York City beaches make Travel + Leisure's "25 Best in the USA." See the complete list.

By Dave Carlin

Updated on: April 29, 2024 / 6:47 PM EDT / CBS New York

NEW YORK -- Travel + Leisure magazine's annual list of the 25 best beaches in the U.S. includes a pair of popular ones right here in New York City.

The two beaches are sharing the prestigious space with other sun, sand and surf spots in places like Hawaii, California and Florida.

George Schlereth of Forest Hills said his love for Rockaway Beach predates the hit 1978 song by the Ramones with lyrics that went, "Rock, rock, Rockaway Beach."

"It's a great place to spend the afternoon. It's the best place you could go," Schlereth said.

So what else makes Rockaway Beach such a fan favorite?

Travel + Leisure praised Rockaway Beach's "Five-mile boardwalk, and surf-worthy waves."

"It's definitely very diverse. People come from all over come here," said Kristen Supple of Far Rockaway.

"Rockaway Beach, because I love like the waves and boogie boarding and they have great ice cream and food," said 10-year-old Jordan Cannetti.

"I used to come here as a kid with my parents and family and it's just night and day. The boardwalk, it's just amazing. Now, the restaurant," his father said. "The parks along the boardwalk are just amazing. Ninja Park is great The pickle ball, the basketball."

"They spent so much money fixing up the Rockaways. They brought in more people, more families down there. The place is packed now," Schlereth added.

And let's not forget the amazing Coney Island

Coney Island bubbled up to the Top 25 as well, with the editors of Travel + Leisure writing, "Coney Island is a perfect seaside wonderland of nostalgia and kitschy fun."

Kenya Dethan, who is 7, called it her favorite beach.

"I like the nice water. I like going on the roller coasters," Dethan said.

The thing about Coney Island is there is so much to do -- sand and surf, the boardwalk with the amusements, and the food and drinks -- all of it rain or shine.

"Number one in the world, Coney Island," resident David Dingle said. "Best of both worlds. You're at the beach and the stores all together, all in one place. Once you're here, you don't want to go back home."

Also making the best beaches list is the New Jersey favorite for fun, Asbury Park. It's the hometown of music legend Bruce Springsteen and features clubs like The Stone Pony , which keep the town highly rated and rockin'.

19 Unique And Fabulous Experiences In Moscow

travel beach wave

  • Destinations

Thinking of visiting Russia? When visiting such a famous city, one must, of course, visit the iconic landmarks first. Moscow has plenty of those, most of them in the center of the city, which is very well-planned for tourists. Once you’ve seen the sights that are on most travelers’ lists, it’s time to branch out and visit some of the lesser-known sites, and there are some fascinating places to see and things to do.

I know this list is long, but I just couldn’t help myself. You probably won’t have the time to see them all. But that’s okay. Just scroll through the list and choose what sounds the most interesting to you. Where possible, make sure to book in advance, as things can get crowded, especially during high season.

Saint Basil's Cathedral in Moscow, Russia

1. The Red Square, Kremlin, And Surroundings

Red Square (Krasnya Ploshad) is the heart and soul of Russia, and where much of the country’s history has unfolded. This is the most famous landmark in Moscow and indeed the whole country, it’s an absolute must-do! The square is always full of people and has a rather festive atmosphere!

Saint Basil’s Cathedral

This is the famous church with the rainbow-colored, onion-domed roof. The cathedral was commissioned in the 1500s by Ivan the Terrible and according to legend, the Tsar thought it was so beautiful, that he ordered that the architect’s eyes be cut out afterward, so he could never build anything more beautiful! He wasn’t called Ivan the Terrible for no reason!

Lenin’s Mausoleum

The “love-it-or-hate-it” of tourist attractions in Russia. A glass sarcophagus containing the embalmed body of Russian revolutionary, Vladimir Lenin. It may seem a bit bizarre to display the mummy of a person, but it has been there for almost half a century and the 2.5 million visitors who come each year, clearly feel the queuing and thorough body search are worth it, to be in Lenin’s presence.

Pro Tip: no photos and no loud talking are allowed inside the Mausoleum.

Eternal Flame

There is an Eternal Flame in honor of an unknown soldier on the left side of Red Square. The hourly changing of the guards is worth seeing.

The Kremlin is the official residence of the Russian president. You can see it from the outside, or you can take an excursion to one of the museums located inside. This is the biggest active fortress in Europe, and holds a week’s worth of attractions! Once behind the 7,332-feet of walls, there are five squares, four cathedrals, 20 towers, various museums, and the world’s largest bell and cannon to see. Worth a special mention is the Armory Chamber that houses a collection of the famous Faberge Eggs.

Pro Tip: You can only go inside the Kremlin if you are part of a tourist group.

Interior of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscos

2. Bolshoi Theatre

Bolshoi Theatre translates to “The Big Theatre” in Russian, and the building is home to both the Bolshoi Ballet and Bolshoi Opera — among the oldest and most famous ballet and opera companies in the world.

Pro Tip: It’s hard to get an inexpensive ticket, so if you’re reading well in advance of going to Moscow then try buying tickets on the official website . Last-minute tickets cost around $250 per person. If this is out of your budget, about an hour before a performance, you can try buying a ticket at the entrance from a reseller. Most can speak enough English to negotiate the price.

Tour the Bolshoi Theatre: You can take a group guided tour of the Bolshoi Theatre which focuses on the history and architecture of the theatre and behind the scenes. There’s an English language tour that lasts 2 hours and costs around $300 for a group of up to six.

GUM, a popular department store in Moscow

3. Luxury Shopping At GUM And TSUM

Russia’s main department store, GUM, has a stunning interior that is home to over 100 high-end boutiques, selling a variety of brands: from luxurious Dior to the more affordable Zara. Even if shopping is not on your Moscow to-do list GUM is still worth a visit; the glass-roofed arcade faces Red Square and offers a variety of classy eateries. TSUM, one of the biggest luxury malls in town, is right behind the Bolshoi and GUM. It’s an imposing building with lots of history, and worth a visit just for its design and its glass roof.

Christ the Savior Cathedral in Moscow

4. Christ The Savior Cathedral

This is one of Russia’s most visited cathedrals and is a newer addition to the gorgeous array of Muscovite cathedrals, but don’t let its young age fool you. After perestroika, in the early 90s, the revived Russian Orthodox Church was given permission to build a cathedral on this site. It did the location honors and built the largest temple of the Christian Orthodox Church. The façade is as grand as you’d expect, but it’s the inside that will mesmerize you, with its domes, gold, gorgeous paintings, and decor!

The cathedral is located just a few hundred feet away from the Kremlin and was the site of the infamous Pussy Riot protest against Putin back in 2012.

Pro Tip: Bring a shawl to cover your hair as is the local custom.

Gates at Gorky Park in Moscow

5. Gorky Park

Moscow’s premier green space, Gorky Park (Park Gor’kogo) is the city’s biggest and most famous park. There is entertainment on offer here for every taste, from outdoor dancing sessions to yoga classes, volleyball, ping-pong, rollerblading, and bike and boat rental in summer. In winter, half the park turns into a huge ice skating rink. Gorky Park is also home to an open-air movie theater and the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art. There is also Muzeon Art Park, a dynamic contemporary space with a unique collection of 700 sculptures. It is located right in front of Gorky Park.

6. Sparrow Hills Park

If you take a walk from Gorky Park, along the Moscow River embankment, you’ll end up in the city’s other legendary park, Sparrow Hills. Although the park doesn’t offer as many activities as its hip neighbor, it has a great panoramic view of the city

Pro Tip: You can take a free walking tour to all of the above attractions with an English-speaking guide.

River cruise in Moscow

7. River Cruising

One of the best ways to experience Moscow, and see all the famous landmarks, but from a different angle, is from the Moscow River. Take a river cruise. Avoid the tourist crowds. There are little nameless old boats that do the cruise, but if you are looking for a more luxurious experience take the Radisson Blu cruise and enjoy the sights with some good food and a glass of wine.

Moscow Metro station

8. Metro Hopping

Inaugurated in the 1930s, the Moscow Metro system is one of the oldest and most beautiful in the world. Started in Stalinist times, each station is a work of art in its own right. I’d recommend touring the stations between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. This way, you’ll be able to properly see it without the crowds. Ideally, I’d recommend taking a tour with a knowledgeable guide with GuruWalk, who will tell you stories of forgotten stations and how the history of the country is interconnected with the metro development. If going by yourself, then I definitely recommend checking out: Mayakovskaya, Ploschad Revolutsii, Kievskaya, Kropotkinskaya, Kurskaya, and Novoslobodskaya stations.

Visit the free Moscow Metro Museum: For real train enthusiasts, located in the southern vestibule of Sportivnaya station is a small free museum. Here you can take a peek into the driver’s cabin, see a collection of metro tokens from different cities, and see different models of a turnstile, traffic lights, escalator, and more.

Moscow State University at dusk

9. Moscow State University View

In his effort to create a grander Moscow, Stalin had seven skyscrapers built in different parts of town; they’re called the Seven Sisters. The largest of these buildings and the one with the best view is the main building of the Moscow State University. Although this is a little outside the city center, the view is more than worth it.

Izmailovsky Market in Moscow, Russia

10. Izmailovsky Market

Mostly known for the city’s largest flea market, the district of Izmaylovo is home to a maze of shops where you can get just about anything, from artisan crafts to traditional fur hats, handcrafted jewelry, fascinating Soviet memorabilia, and antiquities. It’s also one of Moscow’s largest green spaces. There are often no price tags, so be prepared to haggle a bit. Head to one of the market cafes for a warming mulled wine before continuing your shopping spree.

The History of Vodka Museum is found here, and the museum’s restaurant is the perfect place to sample various brands of the national drink.

Once you’ve covered the more touristy spots, Moscow still has plenty to offer, and the places below will also be full of locals! So for some local vibes, I would strongly recommend the spots below!

The skyscrapers of Moscow City

11. Moscow City

With a completely different vibe, Moscow City (also referred to as Moscow International Business Center) is like a mini Dubai, with lots of impressive tall glass buildings. Here is where you’ll find the best rooftops in towns, like Ruski Restaurant, the highest restaurant both in Moscow City and in Europe. Moscow City is great for crowd-free shopping and the best panoramic views of the city.

Art in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow

12. Tretyakov Gallery

Tretyakov Gallery started as the private collection of the Tretyakov brothers, who were 19th-century philanthropists. They gave their private collection to the government after their deaths. If there is just one museum you visit in Moscow, I recommend this one!

Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve, former residence of Catherine the Great

13. Tsaritsyno Museum-Reserve

Tsaritsyno was a residence of Catherine the Great more than two centuries ago. It became derelict during the Soviet era but has now been fully renovated. With its opulently decorated buildings, gardens, meadows, and forests, Tsaritsyno Park is the perfect place for a green respite in Moscow.

Kolomenskoye Museum-Reserve in Moscow

14. Kolomenskoye

A 10-minute metro ride from the city center is Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve, where you can get an idea of what Russia looked like 200 years ago. You’ll find ancient churches (one dating back to the 16th century), the oldest garden in Moscow, and the wonderful fairytale wooden palace of Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich, father of Peter the Great.

Ostankino TV Tower in Moscow at night

15. Ostankino TV Tower

Built in 1967, Ostankino TV Tower was the tallest free-standing construction in the world at the time, it’s still the 8th tallest building in the world and the highest in Europe. It’s also the best observation deck, with a glass floor and 360-degree views. The speedy elevators take you 1,105 feet in next to no time.

Pro Tip: You need to book in advance; entrance is based on specific ticket times and the capacity is limited and only a certain number of tourists are allowed per day. Don’t forget your passport, you’ll need it to get through security.

The floating bridge of Zaryadye Park in Moscow

16. Zaryadye Park

Zaryadye is a newly opened, landscaped urban park so new you won’t find it in a lot of tour guides. The park is near Red Square and is divided into four climatic zones: forest, steppe, tundra, and floodplains, depicting the variety of climatic zones in Russia.

These last three suggestions are a little quirky, but all are really worth checking out.

17. Museum Of Soviet Arcade Games

Release your inner child playing on 66 arcade machines from the Soviet era! What a great way to spend a couple of hours when tired of visiting museums and palaces. The staff speaks excellent English and are happy to explain how the games work.

The rooftops of Moscow, Russia

18. Moscow Rooftop Tour

Take a 1-hour private Moscow rooftop tour with an experienced roofer. I can just about guarantee none of your friends will be able to say they’ve done it! For your comfort, I recommend wearing comfortable shoes. Take your camera, there are some amazing photo opportunities out there!

A pool at Sanduny Banya in Moscow

19. Sanduny Banya

This classical Russian bathhouse opened its doors in 1808 and is famous for combining traditional Russian banya services with luxurious interiors and service. If you enjoy spas and saunas, then you should experience a Russian bathhouse at least once in your life! Go with an open mind and hire a specialist to steam you as it’s meant to be done — by being beaten repeatedly with a besom (a leafy branch)! This is said to improve circulation, but is best done by a professional!

So there you have my list of things to do in Moscow. I could have gone on and on and on, but I didn’t want to try your patience! There are so many things to do in this vibrant city that you’ll definitely need to allocate several days for exploring.

Here are some other reasons to visit Moscow and Russia:

When is the best time to visit Moscow? | Weather, budget, events by month

When is the best time to visit Moscow

Discover when is the best time to visit Moscow. In this blog post, I will talk about weather, budget and other things to know to choose the best time when to go to Moscow for you. I cannot account the times when we went in Moscow. Here are the pros and the cons of each month taking all main criteria into account!

I will first describe the main criteria that will help you choose when to go to Moscow:

  • Climate in Moscow: temperatures and weather

Special events in Moscow

  • Budget and visa

Then I will talk about each season (go directly to this party if you already have an idea of the desired departure date):

  • Advantages and disadvantages month by month

The weather cannot be the only criterion to decide when is the best time to visit Moscow for you. Even if the temperatures drop low, Moscow in December is just magical! This is why I advise to take into account several criteria at the same time. Also remember that it takes at least a month to get the Russian visa.

When to go to Moscow: climate and weather

The seasons are well marked. The mid-season months are not necessarily the best for the weather. However, they are not necessarily to be avoided, because, as we will see later, Moscow is a city that changes all the time and the prices can be more attractive. For example, for a lot of people winter is the best time to visit Moscow.

Weather in Moscow. Moscow is inland, making the city “more protected” from changing weather. For example, the weather is much more changeable in St. Petersburg. On the other hand, the weather in Moscow is more and more scorching in summer, we can then easily reach 30 degrees (for the Russians, it’s already the heat wave).

Moscow temperatures

As soon as you think of Russia, you want to do “Brrrr”. Let’s prepare our down jackets! Indeed, the Russian climate is not the mildest on the planet. However, it all depends on the region, because the country is very large. Moscow is almost at the same latitude as Copenhagen. As Moscow is relatively far from the coast, there is a pronounced continental climate. It is hot in summer and cold in winter.

In addition, global warming is there. For several decades, annual average temperatures have always been recorded above the past. I suggest you look at the averages over the past five years to be as close as possible to reality:

Sunshine and precipitation

Sunshine. This is surprising, but there is more sunshine in Moscow than in Paris or even in Berlin: 1,731 hours in Moscow, compared to 1661 in Paris and 1626 in Berlin.

Duration of the day in winter. We had questions about the length of the day in winter. So, here are a few things. As in Europe, the shortest days are in December. In Moscow, at the end of December, the sun rises around 9 a.m. and sets around 4 p.m. Then the day gets bigger until the end of June, when the day is the longest.

Precipitation. There is more precipitation in Moscow than in Paris (705mm against 637mm).

When is the best time to visit Moscow: interesting events

Moscow is a city that moves a lot. It is even said that this city never sleeps. So there are a lot of events, forums, exhibitions, conferences. Here I’m going to talk about the main recurring events that punctuate the year and that may help you decide when to go to Moscow.

End of year celebrations in Moscow

December 31 rather than Christmas. The Russians are eagerly awaiting the holiday season. Here on December 31 is like Christmas with us. Religion, “opium of the people” according to Marx, and, above all, its official absence marked the country during the Soviet years. This then reinforced the celebration of December 31, while Orthodox Christmas is January 7.

Russian calendar. In addition, it should be known that the first week of January is a bank holiday. Many Russians therefore do not work during this period. Europe also greatly influences the habits of Muscovites. Consequently, the Christmas markets start in early December and, for some, continue until early February!

Fairytale atmosphere. If you are wondering when to go to Moscow and you love the holiday mood, then the end of December – early January, and even February, is for you! There are many things to do during this time: for example, Christmas markets, decorations, winter games, skating rinks. In 2016, Moscow opened the largest ice rink in Europe. In short, the city is doing a lot of entertainment during this period and the general atmosphere is at the top! However, everything comes at a cost. You can see more detail below in the article, month by month.

When to go to Moscow

Visit Moscow in May

May 1 and 9 are two big festivals in Russia. Both dates are known worldwide. May 9 in Russia is May 8 with us in France. The signature that marks the end of the Second World War. The shift day is explained by … the difference in time zone.

The May 9 holiday is a very important holiday for the Russians. The Soviet human losses amounted to millions. So there are many families who have been directly affected by the war. The first big parade was organized by Stalin on June 24, 1945 in Red Square in Moscow. Later each year the USSR and then Russia organized a parade on May 9. Here is the video of the first parade dating from 1945 in color, then the last – that of 2016.

A disadvantage of the beginning of May. For the planned events, Red Square will not be completely empty. There are always installations for May 9, but also rehearsals. So, to the question “when is the best time to visit Moscow”, I would not say that May is the best one. You can find out more in the article “Moscow in autumn” below.

Throughout the year, the Moscow City Hall organizes free events (festivals, small markets, concerts, etc.) in the Red Square and in the streets of the city center. For example, there are two major interesting events:

  • Festival of Lights “Around the World”: in 2019, it was from September 28 to October 4.
  • Anniversary of the city of Moscow always celebrated the first weekend of September.

When is the best time to visit Moscow: budget, price seasonality, visa

Most touristy periods. Many travelers come to Moscow from May to October. This is the period when we see the most tourists in Moscow. In addition, many are also those who come at the end of December and at the beginning of January for the New Year. The beginning of May and the first week of January are also strongly requested, in particular by the Russians (school holidays, public holidays).

Accommodation. Hotel rates therefore necessarily increase during these periods of the year. But they do not go so far as to triple. To give an idea, count at least 80 euros in the city center for a double room with breakfast. You can read more about the districts of Moscow in my article: Where to stay in Moscow?

Guides and tours. Also take into account that during these periods it will be more difficult to find a guide at the last moment. It’s best to do it 2-3 months in advance. There will be more waiting or difficulty obtaining tickets during the months of high tourist influx: late December, early January, May, June, July, August.

Visa for Russia. The cost of the visa does not change depending on the month of the year. On the other hand, the deadlines can be longer if you make the request for the high tourist season (from May to October). Allow about a month. Getting the Russian visa is not complicated, there is a procedure to follow.

In Russia, the seasons are divided as follows:

  • Fall: September, October, November.
  • Winter: December, January, February.
  • Spring: March, April, May.
  • Summer: June, July, August.

Discover Moscow in autumn: when is the best time to visit Moscow in autumn?

From the beginning of September, we feel that the temperatures begin to drop gradually, especially at night.

Moscow in September

More and more travelers are choosing the month of September to go to Moscow. Because it is not cold yet and there are fewer tourists than in summer. Prices drop slightly, but remain higher than in the lean months of the year. There is also the city’s birthday on the first weekend in September, but also the “Around the World” festival towards the end of the month.

Moscow in October

You are likely to come across the colors of autumn from the beginning of October. The accommodation prices are starting to drop gradually. There is less waiting in the places to visit. Temperatures are not very low: during the day they are generally around +6 degrees. On the other hand, the only negative point can be the cost of plane tickets, if you leave during the French school holidays.

Moscow in November

It’s one of the least calm! Temperatures drop and can approach zero during the day in mid-November. Hotel rates are low, there are few tourists, and therefore less waiting in museums. It’s easier to get tickets for the Kremlin Palace of Armor, which can be very difficult in the summer. Guides also have more availability. So why not go to Moscow in November?

Discover Moscow in winter: when is the best time to visit Moscow in winter?

Winter is a very nice time to go to Moscow, because the Christmas and New Year decorations are installed from the beginning of December and are not removed until the end of February. To learn more about the different activities in winter, read this article: What to do in Moscow in winter? If winter temperatures scare you, check out Moscow in the spring (see below).

Moscow in december

Normally, negative daytime temperatures set in, although the weather can vary significantly from year to year. In general, from mid-December the snow is durable. It is from December 20 that more and more travelers come to Moscow. December 31st is celebrated like Christmas in France. Accommodation rates are higher from mid-December. It’s also more complicated to find a guide at the last moment. Furthermore, as in Europe, the days of December are the shortest of the year. But if you want to mark New Years Day, you will have lots of memories!

Moscow in january

January is also a very festive month. The first week of January is a public holiday in Russia. Besides, it’s also a week of Russian school holidays. There are more people in the streets, museums and everywhere in the city. To find out more about this time of year (Christmas markets, itineraries, etc.), read: Christmas and New Years in Moscow . Prices remain high during this week, but drop from mid-January.

Moscow in February

It’s the second quietest month of the year. In February, winter clearly takes its ease. The temperatures are the lowest, it’s a real winter! The days are longer in February than in December. So we’re enjoying the day more, and with the snow it’s really nice, because the weather in Moscow in February is pretty sunny. Accommodation rates are at their lowest, and the decorations are still there. So, if you are looking for when to go to Moscow, if the cold does not scare you and you appreciate the snowy landscapes, why not consider the month of February?

Discover Moscow in spring: when is the best time to visit Moscow in spring?

Spring is a contrasting period between March, which is still quite cold, and May, when we really feel the arrival of summer.

Moscow in March

The ice and snow begin to melt around mid-March. Winter is coming in March, but spring is not quite there yet. It’s the third quietest month of the year. It is therefore possible to visit the city more quietly. Accommodation prices are low, guides are available. The weather in Moscow in March is milder than in February. In addition, the days are longer, so you can take many walks.

Moscow in April

It is only from mid-April that we begin to feel the beginnings of sunny days. The weather in Moscow in spring and April in particular is getting milder and colder: we can expect +7 during the day. In addition, there are not many travelers yet and we fear to enjoy the places more quietly, but we feel that the start of the tourist season is approaching. Accommodation rates are lower than in May.

Moscow in May

The early May holidays attract many travelers to Moscow. There are also many Russians who come to the capital on public holidays. It is therefore advisable to plan visits in advance to avoid queuing once there. Red Square can be closed or partially closed for rehearsals for the May 9 parade, the same day and one or two days after. More info in: Moscow in May: events, budget, what to do?

Discover Moscow in summer: when is the best time to visit Moscow in summer?

All summer months are great, if you take temperatures into account. The weather in Moscow in summer is quite pleasant. However, in recent years, there have been great heat peaks or heat waves in July (30 degrees during the day).

Moscow in June

From June, you can take long walks in the city’s parks, very numerous and much appreciated by the locals. Boat trips are more enjoyable from June. On the other hand, the prices of accommodation in Moscow are higher than in the lean months. There are also more tourists. Book your hotel, tours and activities in advance.

Moscow in july

July is the hottest month, but we’re not on +40. Moscow is a city inland and therefore there is little fresh air, if it is very hot. We can do lots of walks to discover the city. We have written several complete itineraries so as not to miss anything of Moscow in our special Moscow travel guide. It also contains tips to save time and enjoy the city off the beaten track, as there are so many tourists during this time of year.

Moscow in August

Temperatures are starting to drop gradually, but there are still so many people. In order to be sure of the choice of accommodation, I advise you to book in advance. The same goes for guided tours or entrance tickets to the Kremlin. It’s also a good time to discover the city differently by going to places that are less touristy and more frequented by locals.

When is the best time to go to Moscow? In summary!

The best time to discover Moscow depends on the criteria you want to favor: the weather, the budget, the tranquility of the visits, the special events to be experienced on site.

In summary:

  • The peak tourist season in Moscow begins in early May and ends in late September.
  • Late December and early January is the best time to experience the holiday mood, but it comes at a cost.
  • End of January, February, March, beginning of April, November are the quietest months of the year, when you can visit the city more calmly and on a reduced budget.
