3 Ways NASA's Artemis Accords want to create a Star Trek utopia

NASA doesn't want our life in space to end up like Star Wars, but instead like Star Trek. Here's what that means.

artemis in star trek

As peace on Earth continues to feel impossibly out of reach, NASA and other international space agencies are hoping for peace in outer space.

With the launch of the Artemis Accords , NASA created a pact that aims to foster global cooperation and non-aggression beyond the boundaries of our planet, specifically as it relates to exploring the Moon. In a statement about the overall goals of the Accords, Mike Gold associate administrator for international relations at NASA, said in May:

"Via the Artemis Accords, we hope that the future will look a lot more like “Star Trek,” and a lot less like “Star Wars” by getting ahead of these issues."

When Inverse reached out to NASA for comment on just how much Trek influenced the Artemis Accords, Mike Gold — NASA Acting Associate Administrator for International and Interagency — wrote back to us personally, just a few days after the historic SpaceX launch.

"Star Trek has always been an inspiration for many of us in the space field," Gold told Inverse . "Although it never flew into space, the first shuttle was named after the Starship Enterprise, and Nichelle Nichols helped recruit NASA’s first African American and female astronauts. It’s also fair to say that the principles described in the Artemis Accords were developed to create the peaceful future filled with awe, wonder, and adventure that is depicted in Star Trek. Star Trek is the dream that the Artemis program and the Artemis Accords can transform into reality.”

But what does that mean? Here are the ways in which the Artemis Accords mirror the future history of Star Trek .

What are the Artemis Accords?

Put simply, the Artemis Accords are a set of principles NASA is establishing ahead of a new push for further exploration of the Moon. The famous moonshot missions of the sixties and seventies were called the Apollo Program, named for the Greek god of prophecy and medicine, among other things. Artemis was his twin sister, goddess of the hunt and protector of young children. In Andy Weir's 2017 science fiction novel Artemis , a major city on the Moon is also named Artemis.

For NASA, there are 10 basic sections of the accords:

  • Peaceful Purposes (don't go to space for war)
  • Transparency (spacefaring nations let each other know what's going on.)
  • Interoperability (international standards for space equipment.)
  • Emergency Assistance (help out other nations when they need help in space)
  • Registration of Space Objects (make it clear where all your space stuff is and what it is)
  • Release of Scientific Data (share discoveries and all other research openly)
  • Protecting Heritage (don't mess up historical sites, leave the Apollo flag alone)
  • Space Resources (share natural resources discovered on the moon)
  • Deconfliction of Activities (seriously, no space war)
  • Orbital Debris and Spacecraft Disposal (let's get rid of space trash)

At a glance, even casual Trek fans may notice a similarity between these guidelines and the goals of the United Federation of Planets. But how does that breakdown specifically? Here are three ways the Artemis Accords imitate the famous sci-fi series.

artemis in star trek

Creator Gene Roddenberry, and the cast of the original 'Star Trek' in 1976 at the unveiling of the Space Shuttle Enterprise.

3. The Artemis Accords are founded in an older treaty — In the future history of Star Trek, the United Federation of Planets — a governing body that fosters cooperation among hundreds, and later, thousands of planets — is actually the result of an older charter. In the prequel series Enterprise , we learn that the Coalition of Planets was founded in 2155. From this, the United Federation of Planets was eventually created in 2161.

The Artemis Accords are founded in the Outer Space Treaty of 1967. Among other things, this treaty bans nations putting nuclear weapons in orbit of Earth. The Artemis Accords can't exist without this treaty coming first.

artemis in star trek

Real-life space shuttles Enterprise and Discovery; the first was named for Star Trek in 1976, the second became a Star Trek ship in 2017.

2. Preventing war in space — In most iterations of Star Trek , the purpose of the Federation is a little different than its space-faring "military branch," Starfleet.

In the 22nd, 23rd, and 24th centuries, the Federation is dedicated to making sure planets don't get into huge fights with each other. In fact, one specific principle for admission into the Federation is that your planet isn't currently at war with itself. Here's an excerpt the Federation charter, as seen in the Voyager episode, "The Void" ( this text is heavily influenced by the United Nations Charter):

"We the lifeforms of the United Federation of Planets determined to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, and to reaffirm faith in the fundamental rights of sentient beings, in the dignity and worth of all lifeforms, in the equal rights of members of planetary systems large and small, and to establish conditions under which justice and respect for the obligations arising from treaties and other sources of interstellar law can be maintained, and to promote social progress and better standards of living on all worlds, and for these ends, to practice toleration and live together in peace with one another, and to unite our strength to maintain interstellar peace and security, and to ensure, by the acceptance of principles and the institutions of methods, that weapons of destruction shall not be used, save in the common interest, and to employ interstellar resources for the promotion [of peace.]

And here is some similar text in the Artemis Accords:

"International cooperation on Artemis is intended not only to bolster space exploration but to enhance peaceful relationships between nations. Therefore, at the core of the Artemis Accords is the requirement that all activities will be conducted for peaceful purposes, per the tenets of the Outer Space Treaty"
"Providing emergency assistance to those in need is a cornerstone of any responsible civil space program. Therefore, the Artemis Accords reaffirm NASA’s and partner nations’ commitments to the Agreement on the Rescue of Astronauts, the Return of Astronauts and the Return of Objects Launched into Outer Space. Additionally, under the Accords, NASA and partner nations commit to taking all reasonable steps possible to render assistance to astronauts in distress."
"Avoiding harmful interference is an important principle of the Outer Space Treaty which is implemented by the Artemis Accords. Specifically, via the Artemis Accords, NASA and partner nations will provide public information regarding the location and general nature of operations which will inform the scale and scope of ‘Safety Zones’. Notification and coordination between partner nations to respect such safety zones will prevent harmful interference, implementing Article IX of the Outer Space Treaty and reinforcing the principle of due regard."

The USS Enterprise-E in 'Star Trek: Nemesis.'

1. Standardization of spaceship tech — One thing we tend to take for granted in Star Trek is that countless different species on various different planets more or less all have the same kind of tech on their starships. Unless the Enterprise or the Discovery of Voyager or the Defiant encounters aliens outside of Federation boundaries, most spacefaring ships all have warp drives, inertial dampeners, artificial gravity, transporters, tractor beams, etc.

This is a handy plot device across all of Star Trek, but if you think about it in practical terms, it's actually an extension of the idea that spacecraft have to have some kind of universal standards. Otherwise, it's much harder to help each other out in times of space-crises. In Star Trek , Geordi and Scotty are generally able to jumpstart or outright fix broken starships, even when they're not part of "Starfleet."

Arguably, this ability is founded in the idea of standardization, suggested by the Artemis Accords, or as NASA puts it, interoperability. From the Artemis Accords:

Interoperability of systems is critical to ensure safe and robust space exploration. Therefore, the Artemis Accords call for partner nations to utilize open international standards, develop new standards when necessary, and strive to support interoperability to the greatest extent practical.

A Klingon ambassador accuses the Federation of bias in 'Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.'

Not everyone is happy — Just like the Federation has its critics within Star Trek (sometimes from its former citizens), there are some concerns about the Artemis Accords. Dmitry Rogozin, the chief of Russia's space agency publicly criticized the Artemis Accords, noting that Russia had been largely excluded from discussions about the guidelines. One academic, Ram Jakhu of McGill University, also noted that: "Safety zones are necessary, but they can also be abused in a way that it may become appropriation."

In the world of Star Trek , the boundaries of the Federation becomes an issue in all iterations of the franchise, most notably in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country and nearly the entirety of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine . In other words, even if the Artemis Accords or the Federation means well, there still may be some problems to iron-out longterm.

artemis in star trek

NASA astronaut Mae Jemison was inspired by 'Star Trek.' (She even had a cameo on 'The Next Generation.')

How Star Trek could show the way forward — It's still unclear how the Artemis Accords will shake out. As of this writing, NASA intends to go back to the moon by 2024. There will probably be at least three different Star Trek shows on TV at that point, and maybe even a new movie.

In 2017, Star Trek: Discovery name-checked Elon Musk. Will one of the future Trek series — Discovery Season 3, Picard Season 2, or Strange New Worlds — reference the Artemis Accords? Only time will tell.

All hands on desk! PCG plays the best Star Trek game you've never heard of: Artemis Spaceship Bridge Simulator

Star Trek Artemis - team pic

This feature originally ran in PC Gamer UK issue 232. Check out our Video Blog about the photoshoot for behind the scenes footage.

Artemis isn't an official Star Trek game, but it is the Star Trek game you've always dreamed of. It's a bridge simulator, in which multiple players take on the roles of starship crew. There are six slots in a bridge crew: a captain, a helmsman, a weapons master, an engineer, a science officer and comms. The captain hosts a server. Everyone else logs into the server to play their role. Everyone but the captain gets their own screen and their own jobs. To succeed, crew members must communicate and work together. Science officers need to provide bearings and scan readings to helmsmen and weapons officers. Engineers need to divert power between the warp drive and weapons. Everyone needs to listen to the captain's orders.

Artemis is an exciting new take on asymmetric cooperative multiplayer.

Whisper it, but it's basically liveaction roleplaying with viewscreens. Without pausing to read any instructions or forum posts, the PC Gamer team flung itself into a randomly generated mission. What could possibly go... oh.

Episode One - The Kobayashi Maru

Stardate: Wednesday. Lunchtime. About a quarter past one.

Our rookie crew has embarked upon a randomly generated combat mission without looking at the manual, Wiki or readme. We quickly choose our roles and launch the game. No one has any idea how to play, or what the buttons do. All we know is that there are enemy cruisers out there, and we have to kill them.

Captain Tim Edwards: I've made my first decision of the day. I'll command the Starship Artemis with my feet on the desk, eating a sandwich. This will be known as 'The Edwards manoeuvre'. As I do this, my T-shirt rides slightly up. I pull it back down. No no no. Straightening my T-shirt will be called 'The Edwards manoeuvre'. My first order to the crew: “What the hell is going on?”

Science Officer Graham Smith: As our ship's Science Officer, I assume I'll be standing off to Tim's right, looking stern and raising a single, curious eyebrow at confusing human 'feelings'. Which sounds like a regular Thursday. Instead, my screen is a muddle of numbers and graphs. The first screen has a triangle in the middle, with three lines poking out and a circle around it. The second screen has an empty grid with space in it. The third screen shows a poorly rendered 3D spaceship.

I check the computer's databanks (the Artemis Wiki, bit.ly/artemiswiki) to find out what the hell I'm supposed to be doing. While being the sexy voice of reason, I can also use the ship's long-range scanners to bring up tiny numbers about enemy ships. Like that enemy ship half a dozen sectors away.

Tim orders us to attack – or rather, “Attaaaaaaaack!” I relay their position to our Helmsman, Tom Senior, so he can plot a course, and then let Weapons Officer Tom Hatfield know their shield frequency so he can program the torpedoes. Our course is set and we… go nowhere.

artemis in star trek

Owen 'Welshy' Hill: I'm the engineer, which means I control the power to everything on the ship. Except, as soon as I load the game up, I'm confronted with a giant screen covered with blue blobs. The rest of the team seem to know what they're doing and are gleefully making jokes and shouting out instructions. I think back to the two episodes of Star Trek I've seen. What do the engineers do? What is warp? What is impulse? I vaguely remember something about lithium crystals. Ah, it'll come to me. I tell Tim that I've got impulse engines, shields and warp power. And repair crews. He asks if I know what I'm doing. I nod sagely.

“Then why aren't we moving?”

“I'm sure the helmsman will know.”

Phew. Dodged that one.

Senior Ensign Tom Senior: Finally, I get to pilot a starship. It's my job to get from point A to point B via either sluggish impulse propulsion, or warp speed – which is so powerful it reduces your ship to a smear that streaks across the galaxy. As I jump into the game I half expect to see a bank of complex course-plotting software. The reality is, thankfully, much simpler. A small green icon in the centre represents the ship. It's surrounded by a ring, labelled with bearing degrees.

But where's the 'go fast' button? Oh, there it is, a pair of small sliders at the bottom left of the screen. What happens if I set warp to maximum? Absolutely nothing. There's no power. I'm not in charge of that.

Welshy: Oh no. Everyone's looking at me again. Apparently I'm in charge of power. I'm starting to figure this out. I can use sliders to distribute power across different systems. I should put all of our power to impuuuuuuuuuuuuullllse... That works. We're no longer docked.

Uhurich McCormick: I'm working the communications rig and am supposed to use the ship's arrays to chat directly with the things hanging in space around us: to secure docking permissions, check the status of allied ships, things like that. I'd previously been wittering away happily with the station's manufacturing teams to get some more photon torpedoes, but out in the inky blackness of the void, there's no one to talk to. Aww. Wait, we've just scooted past something!

Some red dots on the ship's scanner. I call over to Graham and ask for his expert analysis on what they are. “Red dot things, over there!” he squeaks. Thanks, Graham. Are they hostile? Let's find out.

I bring up my communicator and find their designations. They're marked under 'enemies'. Time for a chat. I have four gambits with which to begin my fledgling diplomatic career, three of which are insults. I think today I'll start with their mothers.

Captain Tim: Red dots. Awesome. We're going to have a scrap. I put down my sandwich, stand up and shout at the crew. “Engineering, shields up. Helmsman, impulse power. Weapons, load torpedoes.”

Ooh, weapons. I forgot to check what guns we're carrying.

Science Officer Smith: I scan the ships, which brings up little numbers next to their names. “There's a Torgoth Cruiser and it has RS200 and FS150! Does anyone know what that means? Also, (M74) BRG, DMG and 2K! Guys, I think we're fighting a motorway.”

Was a Rocket Launched into Space Carrying Remains of 330 People, Including George Washington?

"imagine telling george washington way back that one day in the future we'd be shooting his ashes up into space," one reddit user commented., aleksandra wrona, published jan. 9, 2024.

True

About this rating

On Jan. 8, 2024, a rocket was launched as a part of Astrobotic’s Peregrine Mission One carrying 62 titanium capsules filled with human DNA and cremated remains to be deposited on the moon. Another 268 capsules were sent into deep space. The payload included hair samples of former presidents George Washington, John F. Kennedy, and Dwight D. Eisenhower contributed by an anonymous donor. After the launch, the spacecraft experienced a leak in its propulsion system, raising doubts that it would be able to reach its lunar destination.

On Jan. 7, 2024, a post was shared on Reddit claiming that a rocket was set to "release remains of 330 people, including George Washington, JFK and ‘Star Trek’ cast into space." The same claim was also spread on other social media platforms such as X (formerly Twitter) and TikTok .

Rocket set to release remains of 330 people, including George Washington, JFK and ‘Star Trek’ cast into space: ‘Permanent memorial’ by u/SFC-Scanlater in startrek

The posts referred to an article by The New York Post published on Jan. 6, 2024, with the title "Rocket set to release remains of 330 people, including George Washington, JFK and ‘Star Trek’ cast into space: ‘Permanent memorial.’" It read:

It’s their final frontier. After an eight-month delay, a rocket will finally release into deep space the remains of 330 people from all walks of life — including George Washington and “Star Trek” creator Gene Roddenberry. Texas-based company Celestis Inc.’s inaugural Enterprise Flight is scheduled to launch at 2:18 a.m. Monday from Cape Canaveral in Florida, marking the first time human remains will be released on the moon and beyond by a commercial company. The two-stage Vulcan Centaur rocket will first drop 62 of the 1/4- and 1/2-inch-long titanium capsules filled with DNA or cremated remains on the moon, in a 6-foot-tall, 8-foot-wide device called the Peregrine Lunar Lander. It will become a “permanent memorial.”

The article continued, informing that "an anonymous donor contributed hair samples from former Presidents Washington, John F. Kennedy and Dwight D. Eisenhower."

The spaceship will then take the remaining 268 capsules over 185 million miles into deep space, where they will “orbit the sun forever,” said Celestis CEO and co-founder Charles Chafer. “I’ve had a lot of firsts in my career, but this will be the first commercial deep space mission ever done — and hopefully it will be the first of many, many more over the next few centuries,” Chafer said. The celestial payload will be filled with luminaries.

To verify the claim, we first searched for the Celestis company and found that on its official website it described itself as "the pioneer and iconic global leader in providing memorial spaceflights."

Through 17 missions since 1997, Celestis has helped families the world over commemorate the lives of their departed loved ones. Our experienced team – co founded and led by globally recognized entrepreneur Charles M. Chafer — includes aerospace professionals, dedicated client services and customer support staff, and space launch event management experts. Our directors and advisors include a retired Director of the NASA Kennedy Space Center who directed more than 50 Space Shuttle launches, retired NASA astronauts, and pioneers of the commercial space age.

What's more, the website stated that "sending the Celestis spacecraft carrying cremated remains or DNA on a permanent celestial journey" would cost around $13,000.

artemis in star trek

We also found reports by The Associated Press (AP) confirming that on Jan. 8, 2024, a rocket was set to be launched into space carrying the ashes and DNA of "Star Trek" cast members.

AP published a video on the topic and its description read (emphasis ours):

“Star Trek” stars and fans are gathering in Cape Canaveral, Florida, for the overnight launch of a new rocket. The rocket will carry the ashes and DNA from 70 people, including “Star Trek” creator Gene Roddenberry and science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke, into space. It’s also carrying ashes from “Star Trek” cast members James Doohan, DeForest Kelley and Nichelle Nichols, and strands of hair from three U.S. presidents: Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy and George Washington.

The project, Peregrine Mission One , was spearheaded by Astrobotic Technology , being the first commercial American lunar lander mission. NASA's involvement was notable, with the agency sending its scientific payloads as part of the mission. Importantly, the mission was not without controversy. Indigenous groups, including the Navajo Nation and Maori leaders , have expressed strong objections to the mission. Their concerns primarily focused on the use of the moon for human burials, as the moon holds a revered place in their traditions.

Despite these objections, the Peregrine mission proceeded, albeit with a technical setback soon after launch. The spacecraft experienced a propulsion issue following its separation from the launch vehicle, a Vulcan Centaur rocket. This anomaly raised concerns about the mission's success and the fate of the payloads aboard. As of this writing, the spacecraft's ability to carry out a moon landing was in doubt .

All in all, on Jan. 8, 2024, a rocket was indeed launched destined to drop 62 titanium capsules filled with DNA or cremated remains on the moon. The remaining 268 capsules were to be sent into deep space. However, the mission's moon landing was in doubt due to a technical problem soon after launch.

Greetings Tactical, This guide is centred around the spaceship bridge simulator, Artemis, and currently one of the best Star Trek mods for it. In an essence, Artemis: Spaceship Bridge Simulator is at it's heart a Star Trek game in non-Trek form, allowing people to command each section on the bridge, whether it be the Helm, Tactical, Science, Engineering or Captain (with several others to choose, most recently added Fighter pilots) there will always be a place on the ship for you to fit in! The game itself can support multiple different ships, if we had 10 people, we could have two ships flying around each with a crew of 5 - head to HERE to find out more! STAR TREK TNG SETUP This Star Trek mod adds a whole load of Star Trek ships and sound effects, not just from the TNG era but also includes the Constitution refit and other TMP time ships (Excelsior, Constellation and Miranda) as well as more modern TNG vessels. The music and sounds effects have been replaced with Star Trek ones, alongside a removal of all weapon types except for standard torpedoes - no need to worry about nukes! Head over to THIS thread for further information. Please bare in mind that the current mod and game setup we use, needs to be at Version 2.4.0 - which is the latest Artemis version. If you attend an Artemis event you can get help from myself to install the game, as well as receive your free copy from me. How to install: Download the mod from HERE Make a copy of your Artemis 2.4.0 folder - move anywhere except for main Artemis folder - and rename to "Star Trek: Artemis" or whichever name you prefer Place all files within the .zip downloaded, into the new Artemis directory and merge with existing files/folders Run the "PlayArtemis.bat" file, this will open a console with a lot of files being edited, when prompted press "g" - this will load all Star Trek files in place and play the game Once the bat file has been used, all further game launches can be done through the normal Artemis.exe within the modded copy of the game Finally, boldly go where no man has gone before! If you do require help, please feel free to message me and I will do my utmost to help out! Do remember, if you attend a Artemis event you can get the game free from myself! Is this game still played by anyone here? I've had it for quite some time with the intent of starting my own group with my friends but they either aren't interested or don't have the time or a good enough computer.

Armus was an entity created by the former natives of Vagra II .

  • 3.1 Appearances
  • 3.2 Background information
  • 3.3 External link

Vagra II [ ]

Armus was born as a by-product, or personification , of a procedure in which a " race of Titans " brought out from within themselves all evil and negative attributes that had bound them to destructiveness. The unwanted substance spread and coalesced into a dank and vile second skin . The race rejected this "skin of evil" and abandoned it on the barren planet Vagra II in the Zed Lapis sector .

Armus dormant

Armus in its dormant state

Armus manifested as a pool of black viscous liquid that could also assume a vaguely humanoid shape. Tricorder scans could not register the substance Armus was composed of, but could only determine that it lacked a neural and circulatory systems , internal organs , and recognizable proteins , and had no known cellular structure . Furthermore, in observing its movements, its means of locomotion could not be determined, as it also appeared to lack skeletal framework or musculature . Initial observations indicated that, though showing no sign of intelligence , much less a brain , the slick showed evidence of thought .

Armus was also capable of enveloping humanoids and incorporating them into the liquid, where they would remain conscious while in liquid form. Armus was capable of then inflicting suffering upon its victims while they were in this state. Armus was impervious to phaser fire, and Data theorized that it could, in fact, feed off of phaser energy. Captain Jean-Luc Picard assumed that Armus was immortal .

After the initial abandonment, Armus was left in a state of undirected rage. However, when the rage was focused, Armus was capable of generating, around itself, an intense undefined force field . With this energy field, it was capable of blocking sensor scans, communications and transporters . It was also capable of using psychokinesis and teleportation on at least humanoid-size organisms within the field. Armus was also capable of inflicting energy discharges that caused synaptic damage to humanoids, killing them. Presumably, this field was also responsible for causing the nearby Shuttlecraft 13 to experience a massive systems breakdown and crash land on the planet in 2364 .

Armus waited for someone to arrive for the rescue of the two shuttlecraft passengers, in order to sadistically torture the rescuers. After killing Lieutenant Natasha Yar with an energy discharge when she tried to walk to the downed shuttle, Armus expected to feel amusement. It also expected that the USS Enterprise -D crew would abandon the rescue effort. Even after they didn't, Armus realized torturing them would never be amusement enough. It wanted passage away from Vagra II, to find the beings that initially abandoned it there. Eventually, Picard was able to distract Armus long enough for the energy field to weaken to a point whereby it allowed beaming the shuttle occupants and Picard off the surface, leaving Armus wailing in fury. Following the beam-up, the shuttle wreckage was destroyed with a photon torpedo to prevent any possibility of Armus using it, and Vagra II was declared off-limits . ( TNG : " Skin Of Evil ")

Despite that interdiction, in 2381 , at Ensign D'Vana Tendi 's suggestion, Beckett Mariner used a submanifold casting stone , which could be used to broadcast voices to a planet, to prank call Armus.

As Armus sat, wishing it had someone to torture , it was surprised to hear a mysterious voice called out its name, then told that it looked "like a big bag of crap ;" this angered Armus, and it demanded that they show themselves. She continued to torment it, calling it a " dummy ", with Brad Boimler adding that they were "touching [its] stuff". Armus then threatened to kill them with "a flake of [its] power ", and exclaimed that he was "a skin of evil", before he became so angry that he stumbled backwards and tripped over a rock and made a splash landing on the ground. Tendi responded by telling Armus that he was, rather, " more like a puddle of *bleep* . " ( LD : " The Spy Humongous ")

Armus was part of Commander William T. Riker 's memories while being infected on the surface of Surata IV and treated in sickbay . ( TNG : " Shades of Gray ")

In an alternate timeline , Lieutenant Yar was not killed by Armus, and was still the security chief on the battleship USS Enterprise -D in 2366 . Guinan , who somehow knew of Tasha's other fate, described it as a " senseless death in the other timeline." ( TNG : " Yesterday's Enterprise ")

Several years after Yar's death, the Enterprise visited Yar's homeworld, Turkana IV . Here Data met and mentioned to Tasha's sister , Ishara , that her sibling was killed by a malevolent entity . He further explained that " [s]he was killed as a demonstration of the creature's power, without provocation. " ( TNG : " Legacy ")

While affected by nitrogen intoxication in 2380 , Lieutenant Commander Andy Billups yelled, " Tasha no! The garbage bag is behind you! " ( LD : " Veritas ")

Later that year, Ensign Mariner, furious over Boimler being promoted to lieutenant junior grade and transferring to the USS Titan , threatened to "feed [him] to an Armus." ( LD : " No Small Parts ")

Armus was well enough known to be a watchword for uncivil behavior into the 32nd century . Haz Mazaro warned his guests not to "act like an Armus" in 3190. ( DIS : " All In ").

Probert Armus concept

Andrew Probert concept art

Sternbach Armus concept

Rick Sternbach 's concept

Armus was "fondly named after" TNG Season 1 writer and producer Burton Armus . ( Star Trek: Communicator #112, p. 5)

Concept art for Armus was designed by Andrew Probert . ( The Art of Star Trek , p.102) The costume creation was divided between Michael Westmore 's department (to design the head piece of the suit) and Makeup & Effects Laboratories (to create the body). ( Star Trek: The Magazine  Volume 2, Issue 12 , p. 26) The head piece was made out of soft polyfoam with a latex skin over it. It was sculpted by Westmore and Gerald Quist . ( Star Trek: The Next Generation Makeup FX Journal ) Westmore sculpted the head piece around a cast of the actor's head which he had taken. He also embedded goggles into the prosthetic piece, to prevent the black slime from rushing into the actor's eyes. ( Star Trek: The Magazine  Volume 2, Issue 12 , p. 26) There were three mouth holes on the head piece, designed in such a way that fingers could be easily inserted to clear the actor's mouth from the black goo. ( Star Trek: The Next Generation Makeup FX Journal )

The goo was made from Metamucil and black printers' ink. ( TNG Season 1 DVD special features) According to Michael Westmore, the goo was water-soluble methocel material and the ink was water-based. ( Star Trek: The Next Generation Makeup FX Journal )

Armus was played by Mart McChesney and voiced by Ron Gans . Because no oxygen tank was provided to McChesney, the scenes of Armus submerging and rising from the pit of black goo were timed with a stopwatch. ( Star Trek: The Next Generation Makeup FX Journal ) However, the body portion of the costume disintegrated during filming, after reacting with the goo, each day of shooting. Several more costumes were ordered from the manufacturer after the first of two original ones fell apart. Michael Westmore has been unable to find an explanation for the disintegrations, as the goo was supposed to be inert. ( Star Trek: The Next Generation Makeup FX Journal ) " I don't know what else was in it, " admitted Westmore, " because it caused the glue in the costume – very strong shoe glue – to undo itself, and the costume would fall apart. " ( Star Trek: The Magazine  Volume 2, Issue 12 , p. 26)

NASA says Artemis Accords envision ‘Star Trek’ future for moon

Accords seek to establish global principals for lunar colonisation, including letting firms own resources they mine.

NASA Artemis Accords

NASA on Friday set the stage for a global debate over the basic principles governing how humans will live and work on the moon, as it released the main tenets of an international pact for moon exploration called the Artemis Accords.

The accords seek to establish “safety zones” that would surround future moon bases to prevent what NASA, the United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration, called “harmful interference” from rival countries or companies operating in close proximity.

The race to dominate space continues despite the coronavirus, nato declares space an ‘operational domain’, trump launches us space command to address new threats.

The accords would also permit companies to own the lunar resources they mine, a crucial element in allowing NASA contractors to convert the moon’s water ice into ingredients for rocket fuel or mine lunar minerals to construct landing pads.

The accords are a key part of NASA’s effort to court allies around its plan to build a long-term presence on the lunar surface under its Artemis moon programme.

“What we’re doing is we are implementing the Outer Space Treaty with the Artemis Accords,” NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine told Reuters news agency, referring to a 1967 international pact that emphasises that space should be used for peaceful rather than military uses.

The framework will be used as an incentive for nations to adhere to US norms of behaviour in space, he added.

“It applies to Low Earth Orbit; it applies to the moon as well,” Bridenstine said. The accords also require countries to adopt standards of the United Nations Space Debris Mitigation Guidelines – which govern the prevention of hazardous space debris – and the UN Convention on Registration of Objects Launched into Outer Space, which would require countries to provide orbital details of their “space objects”.

The US Congress passed a law in 2015 allowing companies to own the resources they mine in outer space, but no such laws exist in the international community. The Artemis Accords, consistent with the space policy of the administration of US President Donald Trump, appear to clear the way for companies to mine the moon under international law and urge countries to enact similar national laws that would bind their private sector’s space operations.

“Why would private companies take the risk of going to mine resources if the legal situation was they could be kept from owning them?” Lori Garver, former deputy administrator of NASA, asked Reuters. “So anything this does to clear any of that up could really help advance progress in space development.”

China and Russia

Reuters reported earlier this month that the Trump administration was drawing up the Artemis Accords.

In response, Russia’s space agency chief Dmitry Rogozin criticised Washington for excluding Russia from early negotiations over the space exploration pact, drawing parallels with US foreign policy in the Middle East.

“The principle of invasion is the same, whether it be the Moon or Iraq. The creation of a ‘coalition of the willing’ is initiated,” Rogozin wrote on Twitter. “Only Iraq or Afghanistan will come out of this.”

China said it was willing to cooperate with all parties on lunar exploration “to make a greater contribution in building a community with shared future for mankind,” a spokesperson for China’s foreign ministry said in a statement faxed to Reuters.

The safety zones – while intended to encourage coordination – have prompted questions on whether the accords align with the Outer Space Treaty, which states the moon and other celestial bodies are “not subject to national appropriation by claim of sovereignty, by means of use or occupation, or by any other means.”

The size of the safety zones would vary depending on the nature of the site they surround and would not constitute appropriation, Bridenstine said.

They would follow the principle that “basically says I’m gonna stay out of your way, you’re gonna stay out of my way, and we can all operate in this space,” he added.

However, there is a question over who determines the sizes of the safety zones, said Ram Jakhu, associate professor at McGill University’s Institute of Air and Space Law in Canada. “Safety zones are necessary, but they can also be abused in a way that it may become appropriation.”

But Mike Gold, NASA’s associate administrator for international relations, told Reuters the language on moon mining shouldn’t worry other nations.

“The principles that are being put forward here is nothing that we believe any responsible spacefaring nation would disagree with,” he said.

“Via the Artemis Accords, we hope that the future will look a lot more like Star Trek, and a lot less like Star Wars by getting ahead of these issues,” Gold said.

A change in plans? —

Nasa may alter artemis iii to have starship and orion dock in low-earth orbit, if it were to happen, a revised artemis iii mission could echo apollo 9..

Eric Berger - Apr 19, 2024 3:20 pm UTC

This image taken by NASA's Orion spacecraft shows its view just before the vehicle flew behind the Moon in 2022.

Although NASA is unlikely to speak about it publicly any time soon, the space agency is privately considering modifications to its Artemis plan to land astronauts on the surface of the Moon later this decade.

Multiple sources have confirmed that NASA is studying alternatives to the planned Artemis III landing of two astronauts on the Moon, nominally scheduled for September 2026, due to concerns about hardware readiness and mission complexity.

Under one of the options, astronauts would launch into low-Earth orbit inside an Orion spacecraft and rendezvous there with a Starship vehicle, separately launched by SpaceX. During this mission, similar to Apollo 9, a precursor to the Apollo 11 lunar landing, the crew would validate the ability of Orion and Starship to dock and test habitability inside Starship. The crew would then return to Earth. In another option NASA is considering, a crew would launch in Orion and fly to a small space station near the Moon, the Lunar Gateway, and then return to Earth.

To discuss these options, Ars asked for an interview with Catherine Koerner, a deputy associate administrator who oversees Exploration Systems Development for NASA. Instead, the space agency offered a noncommittal statement.

"NASA continues to work toward the Artemis II crewed test flight in September of 2025 and the Artemis III test flight to land astronauts near the lunar South Pole in September of 2026," the statement read. "The agency evaluates element progress and status on a daily basis and uses that data to make decisions at the right time for each mission as a part of prudent programmatic and mission management. Should a particular hardware element not be available to support a mission as scheduled or planned, NASA will evaluate the readiness of available hardware for options to make those decisions with crew safety as the number one priority."

An unrealistic timeline

The space agency's date for Artemis II is optimistic but potentially feasible if NASA can resolve the Orion spacecraft's heat shield issues. A lunar landing in September 2026, however, seems completely unrealistic. The biggest stumbling blocks for Artemis III are the lack of a lander, which SpaceX is developing through its Starship program, and spacesuits for forays onto the lunar surface by Axiom Space. It is not clear when the lander or the suits, which NASA only began funding in the last two to three years, will be ready.

There are also concerns about the complexity of Artemis III. It will require a number of previously untested steps, including an Orion-Starship rendezvous and docking in lunar orbit; humans flying inside of Starship in space; Starship going down to the surface and coming back up to dock with Orion; and more. Mission planners would be more comfortable if they could, in NASA parlance, "buy down the risk" of Artemis III by validating some of these delicate maneuvers before the lunar landing mission.

This is why NASA has asked SpaceX to look at a mission where Orion would rendezvous with the Starship vehicle in orbit around Earth. Such a mission—whether called Artemis IIS or Artemis III—would solve a lot of problems for the space agency and appears to be the preferred option at this time. Critically, it would verify the ability of the two spacecraft to dock in an environment where, if there were a problem, it would be much easier for the crew to return safely home. It would also validate the ability of astronauts to live inside Starship and perform some ascent and descent maneuvers.

'Star Trek: Discovery' season 5 episode 3 'Jinaal' is a slow but steady affair

Humans have evidently evolved beyond the need for stairs in the 32nd century as teleportation has replaced the simple act of actually walking to places

Have you ever seen a single, more

Warning: Spoilers ahead for "Star Trek: Discovery" season 5, episode 3

The latest installment of "Star Trek: Discovery" season 5 on Paramount Plus adds a little water – and possibly some fertilizer – to the various different story seeds sewn last week.

Entitled "Jinaal," the primary plot revolves around a revisit to the planet Trill and as you may recall, the last time we spent any length of time here was the episode " Forget Me Not " (S03, E04), which was not terrible. In fact, it was undeniable highlight of the third season, which itself had some of the best we've seen from "Discovery." Incidentally, that was first look at the Trill homeworld since " Star Trek: Deep Space Nine " episode "Equilibrium" (bizarrely, also S03, E04). (If you need a recap on how to watch Star Trek: Discovery, check out our Star Trek streaming guide for Paramount Plus .)

Watch Star Trek on Paramount Plus:

Watch Star Trek on Paramount Plus: Get a one month free trial

Get all the Star Trek content you can possibly handle with this free trial of Paramount Plus. Watch new shows like Star Trek: Discovery and all the classic Trek movies and TV shows too. Plans start from $4.99/month after the trial ends.

Curiously, in that episode "Forget Me Not," Dr. Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz) was given a rare and welcome chance to shine and he does so once again in this episode as well. To briefly recap, Adira (Blu del Barrio) and her lover, a Trill named Gray (Ian Alexander), were aboard a generation ship way back when. They were both orphans, very much in love, and Gray had just received his symbiote when the ship was struck by an asteroid and everyone was ordered to evacuate. Unfortunately, Gray was fatally injured and the only way to save the symbiote was for Adira to join with it. And that's how it was for all of season three right up until the fourth season episode " Choose To Live " (S04, E03).

Then, after all of that, Gray Tal has his consciousness transferred out of Adira and into an artificial synth golem before heading back to Trill to complete all that monk-style studying. And now you're all caught up.

All this has happened before and all of it will happen again. And by the way, Captain Burnham is a Cylon…

While a trip back to Trill is nice, you can't help but start to wonder if this fifth and final season will end up a 10-episode long epilogue as it ties up all its loose ends, almost like season five of " Babylon 5 ."  Commander Jett Reno (Tig Notaro) pops up in this episode at last, which more or less just leaves Commander Nhan (Rachael Ancheril), whom we last saw in the episode " Rubicon " S04, E09, to make an appearance. Although Ancheril's IMDb page does currently say, "Coming up in 2024, Rachael will be seen again in 'Chucky' season three [and] 'Star Trek Discovery' for its final season," so who knows.

The big highlight this week was, as we alluded to above, Cruz's chance to stretch his acting chops just a little bit and he does not disappoint. The two biggest grumbles however, are the dialogue written by a writer who just saw "Lethal Weapon II" for the very first time and that the notion of teleporting around the place instead of just walking, has been taken to ludicrous extremes.

"Star Trek: Discovery" seems to be at peace with lifting from other IPs, sci-fi or otherwise. We've seen a nice " Close Encounters of the Third Kind " reference with mashed potato and we've even seen a fun nod to "Scooby-Doo," but these were all subtle. Then there was the extremely unsubtle " Die Hard " thing and then in " Scavengers " (S03, E06) the writers went  way  beyond homage and practically lifted a set piece directly from the 1987 movie "The Running Man." The premise was the same, the effect was the same and even the setting was practically identical.

This week's insight into what classic movie the Gen-Z writers of "Discovery" have recently discovered comes from a legendary scene with equally legendary dialogue between Sgt. Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson) and Sgt. Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover) during a rescue attempt after the latter learns that the toilet he's been sitting on has been rigged with a bomb in the first "Lethal Weapon" sequel. Lest we forget, this underrated action extravaganza also gave us Leo Getz and immortalized phrases like "diplomatik immunitee." and "but, but...you're blick."

Still, at least it was just a line or two of dialogue this time and not an entire set piece. My other main grumble with this episode as we mentioned above is the carefree abandon with which transporters are used. And I've touched upon this before. Despite beaming becoming a very common part of everyday life of the 32nd century, to the extent that folk use transporters instead of stairs and even to just change outfits, like we saw in the season four premiere episode — but the thing is, transporters kill you .

The creators of " Star Trek " have never officially confirmed that transporters kill you. However, solely based on the science, transporters do kill you. In simple terms, these teleportation devices scan every molecule in your body and briefly store them in the pattern buffer, while at the same time, the original body is to all intents and purposes, disintegrated. The transporter then converts the scanned copy into energy and beams the data stream to the desired location, where the body is rebuilt, from a sub-atomic level, using technology similar to a replicator. It's comparable in principle to a fax, except this fax machine destroys the original, to prevent duplication, although that has been known to happen.

The issue is essentially an existential one. Since our bodies are made up of identifiable matter, why won't transference of consciousness occur? What makes our consciousness so unique? What's the difference between an identical copy and you? If you were to put your copy into a different room that you hadn't been into, would you be able to see it? No. It's a perfect copy, but it's not you. There is a good article on Ars Technica that really goes into detail on this.

Still, all of this banter aside, this episode is not ... terrible. It is very evenly paced and that, despite the not-exactly edge-of-seat storyline, makes it bearable. Every sub-story seems to be given equal time and brief-but-enjoyable interplay between Lt. Tilly (Mary Wiseman) and Captain Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) is fun. Plus, of course, we get to see the Trill homeworld again, which is nice.

In other "Star Trek" news, " Strange New Worlds " has been renewed for a fourth season, while " Lower Decks " will end with its previously announced upcoming fifth season, expected to air sometime this year. Creator Mike McMahan and executive producer Alex Kurtzman posted a statement on the Star Trek website: “While five seasons of any series these days seems like a miracle, it’s no exaggeration to say that every second we've spent making this show has been a dream come true. Our incredible cast, crew and artists have given you everything they have because they love the characters they play, they love the world we've built, and more than anything we all love, love, love Star Trek."

Where once there were four shows airing simultaneously, now there is only one left,

Meanwhile, "Strange New Worlds" is currently in production on its third season, which is set to debut in 2025. It seems that all of this combined with the fact that "Section 31" ended up as a movie , casts doubt over the future of the Starfleet Academy spin-off and hopefully signals the end of the idiotic idea of "Star Trek: Legacy." Perhaps Paramount should look to cancel other ludicrous endeavors like the proposed Picard movie instead of cancelling decent shows in their efforts to tighten purse strings.

The fifth and final season of "Star Trek: Discovery" and every episode of every "Star Trek" show — with the exception of "Star Trek: Prodigy" — currently streams exclusively on Paramount Plus in the US while "Prodigy" has found a new home o n Netflix.

Internationally, the shows are available on  Paramount Plus  in Australia, Latin America, the UK and South Korea, as well as on Pluto TV in Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Switzerland on the Pluto TV Sci-Fi channel. They also stream on  Paramount Plus  in Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland and Austria. In Canada, they air on Bell Media's CTV Sci-Fi Channel and stream on Crave.
