Poconos, PA

Poconos, PA

Observing the fall foliage is one of the main attractions in the Poconos Mountains during early October, and there are a variety of exciting and adventurous ways to see the changing colors. Air tours are available in two ways: you can charter a flight from a local air tour company or climb even higher and skydive over the mountains themselves. Both offer unique panoramic views of the diverse colors during autumn, but for those who want to keep their feet on the ground, there plenty of hiking trails with vistas that offer splendid views. Families may enjoy a visit to the Poconos Adventure Park for outdoor fun, giving the children a chance to burn off some energy and the parents an opportunity to relax while surrounded by the vibrant display of the mountains.

Aspen, CO

Deep in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado and surrounded by striking peaks and vistas, Aspen is primarily a ski town, but is often enjoyed heavily during the other seasons by various crowds. When the summer tourists leave the Rockies and head home and Columbus Day rolls around, taking a trip to Aspen means a vacation with beautiful hikes, easy access to restaurants, and typically lower prices than you would see other times of the year. There is the Aspen Saturday Market that offers table produce and handcrafted items, and guests can easily reach some of the most photographed peaks in North America, known as the Maroon Bells.

Eureka Springs, AR

Eureka Springs, AR

Although Eureka Springs doesn’t host any special Columbus Day events, that does not mean that spending the first part of October won’t be a blast. With fall weather just around the corner in this tiny city, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors without the sweltering heat native to the area in summer time. While exploring the town, guests can look at preserved Victorian buildings such as the Palace Bath House and the Crescent Hotel. For stunning architecture with a view there is Thorncrown Chapel, a church built primarily out of glass and wood located in the nearby hills.

56 Magnificent Waterfalls in Ohio To Visit This Year

Located just 40 miles from Columbus, Newark is a great spot to go if you’re looking to get out of the city for the day. Fans of quirky landmarks can get an up-close-and-personal look at the world’s largest basket, which actually houses a company headquarters.

The Interesting Works Museum, which is dedicated to Newark’s industrial history, is worth visiting too. Here, you can learn about canal-building and glass blowing, as well as the history of the region. Keep an eye out for ancient earthworks, which were constructed by Native American civilizations in the area.

Also, consider going in early June. Not only will you be able to check out the sites, but you’ll be able to soak in the atmosphere of the Newark Strawberry Festival and nosh on strawberry shortcakes and other delicious dishes.

Experience the Ohio Caverns in West Liberty Ohio

1-hour drive from Columbus

If you’re looking to explore during your next day trip, head northwest to the Ohio Caverns in West Liberty. These Ohio caves are recognized as some of the most colorful in the United States because of their amazing collection of stalagmites, stalactites, and other formations.

If you’re going to go exploring, take a jacket and a camera. The caverns maintain a constant temperature of 54 degrees, and a jacket will keep you comfortable. With your camera, you can get amazing photos of the formations up close and be able to show them to family and friends.

Guided tours lasting about an hour are offered, so be prepared for some walking.

A Trip to Yellow Springs Ohio

There are many fun options for day trips from Columbus Ohio to Yellow Springs. In particular, Young’s Jersey Dairy Farm has excellent ice cream and a restaurant.

best columbus day weekend trips

You can also visit the  Glen Helen Nature Preserve , which has a nice visitors center, and you can learn about the area as you walk through the pathways. There’s a grotto and some interesting wildlife.

In and around Yellow Springs, is Clifton Ohio with a covered bridge and Historic Clifton Mill . There are less than 100 mills still in existence today, and this is one of them.

What to See in Mansfield Ohio

If you’ve seen “Shawshank Redemption” (if you haven’t, come on it’s a classic), you’ll really enjoy Mansfield. Even if you haven’t seen the movie, this city is very interesting.

The Ohio State Reformatory is fascinating and intriguing. You’re allowed to wander around and freak yourself out with all the nooks, crannies, and peeling wallpaper in every room. The audio guides enrich your time and point out things that you would probably never notice.

For example, there’s an ‘x’ of light that’s made between four doorways that’s always there because of the symmetry of the building. Interesting, but most people don’t notice.

best columbus day weekend trips

Beware that there’s no heat in the building. We went in February and nearly froze to death. However, we still loved it and can’t wait to visit again.

A Visit in Lucas Ohio

About 20 minutes from Mansfield, is another wonderful site worth visiting — Malabar Farm State Park . It features lots of events, like Wildflower hikes and Maple Syrup Festivals . The home was built by a man named Louis Bromfield in the 1940s and has all the original furnishings.

It features paintings from France, a grand piano, etc.

The home is interesting to explore, and the history is fascinating. Many celebrities visited the home, and in fact, Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall got married here. The home was donated to be part of a state park and is very well-done.

The state park, which is also near Mohican State Park , features hiking trails and look-outs. The tallest point in the area, Mt. Jeez, is a great overlook to see the entire farm.

best columbus day weekend trips

We visited Malabar Farm State Park in the summer and enjoyed some of the hiking trails we’d heard about in February.  We also visited the farm and saw some of the animals, and then ate at the Malabar Farm Restaurant , which uses local ingredients in their dishes.

Cedar Bog Nature Preserve in Urbana Ohio

Less than one hour from Columbus, you’ll find a 450-acre nature preserve. Thousands of years ago, glaciers carved through much of Ohio and left behind what are now protected wetlands.

Visitors will be pleased to learn that boardwalks go through the wetlands, so you won’t have to put on heavy-duty gear to go exploring. You can explore the preserve year-round, but visiting in springtime is something special when the lady slipper orchids bloom.

There’s a small fee for each entrant to help with the upkeep of the park. But it’s worth it considering all the rare plants and animals you’ll get to see.

Hocking Hills State Park in Logan Ohio

Almost every local knows about Hocking Hills State Park as a destination for day trips from Columbus Ohio . There aren’t many places to hike and see hills around Columbus (obviously), so this area is close enough it’s a hot place to visit.

However, it’s worth mentioning regardless. There are many trails and sites worth mentioning, including Old Man’s Cave .

DSCN0794

John Glenn Astronomy Park in Logan Ohio

There are lots of great day trips from Columbus Ohio, but a visit to John Glenn Astronomy Park makes for a great night trip. If you go on a clear night, you’ll have a great experience and be able to see the night sky during one of the many weekly programs that are held.

Visitors can plan their own evenings of fun too. It’s open at all times, and admission is free. So, if you’re into stars and astrology, grab your telescope, and make the drive.

best columbus day weekend trips

Kings Island Amusement Park in Mason Ohio

1-hour and 15-minute drive from Columbus

Located just north of Cincinnati, this amusement park is a favorite spot for people of all ages to visit.

There are plenty of thrill rides to delight roller coaster fans, but there’s also Planet Snoopy and Soak City water park. A brand new coaster, the Orion, was added recently.

This is the perfect place if you’re looking to have some fun after a long week of work.

When you think of Ohio, you likely think of Columbus, Cincinnati, and Cleveland. But if you’re looking for a fun day trip, don’t discount the numerous Dayton Ohio things to do .

If you love planes and aviation, Dayton is a place you absolutely have to visit. Famed pioneers of flight Orville and Wilbur Wright are from Dayton, and the city is where they built their first aircraft.

Also, Dayton is home to the National Museum of the US Air Force , one of the world’s largest aviation museums. You can marvel at more than 350 aerospace vehicles, missiles, and exhibits that tell of the country’s aviation history. You can test out a flight simulator and check out a 3D theater too.

While you’re near Dayton, head to Lebanon Ohio and the Gentle Breeze Hot Air Balloon Company. You can take aerial tours of either Dayton or Cincinnati , as well as see the wonders of the Ohio countryside.

A Trip to Cumberland Ohio

1-hour and 30-minute drive from Columbus

If you can’t go to Africa, go to The Wilds on day trips from Columbus Ohio! It has open-air safari rides that are $30 a person, and you get to see animals in a “more natural habitat.” (Obviously, they were stolen from their original habitat, but those of us who have a complex with visiting zoos will enjoy this option more.)

The safari takes you around so you can view animals grazing or watering. Animals we saw — zebras, camels, deer, giraffes, and other animals I can’t pronounce.

A Visit to the Miamisburg Mound in Ohio

If you’re looking for a quick getaway with the family for the day, head to Miamisburg Mound, where you’ll find spectacular man-made mounds. These are conical and easy to climb, so if you’re willing to climb up, it makes for a great family photo op.

Miamisburg Mound has a playground area for kids and a picnic area. So you can make a day of it without having to go too far.

Historic Loveland Castle & Museum in Loveland Ohio

You may think the best and most magnificent castles can only be found overseas in Europe. That’s where you’re wrong.

Just over an hour from Columbus, you’ll find Loveland Castle, which came to be when a WWI veteran was inspired to build a French-style castle of his own. Not only can you go exploring, but the castle offers many other services, such as weddings and Cub Scout sleepovers.

As you explore and marvel at the architecture — a mix of German, French, and English construction — you can learn all about Harry (the man who built the castle), play games and puzzles, and keep an eye out for ghosts that reportedly roam around.

If you like medieval swords and weapons, those are displayed throughout the castle as well.

Salt Fork State Park in Lore City Ohio

If you’re a fan of cryptids and cryptology, day trips from Columbus Ohio to explore Ohio’s famous Bigfoot territory are right up your alley. The park has been featured on Animal Planet and is reportedly full of the famous bipeds.

This is also where the annual Ohio Bigfoot Conference is held. So grab your Bigfoot exploration gear, and prepare to go hunting for sasquatch.

Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park and Museum in Hamilton Ohio

1-hour and 45-minute drive from Columbus

As you’ve already read, Ohio is home to some truly great historical sights. At this Hamilton museum, you can take a scenic drive in your car to see this more than 300-acre sculpture park. If you want something a little more adventurous, rent a golf cart for a closer look.

While you’re here, stop at the Ancient Sculpture Museum, where you can see sculptures from many civilizations, including the Romans, Greeks, and Egyptians.

Explore Greater Cincinnati Ohio

There’s a lot to do in Cincinnati.

The second time we went to Cincinnati, we visited a few other places worth mentioning — such as the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center , which discussed the harrowing effects of slavery in the United States and current slavery that still exists in the world.

It’s one of those places that you want to be mentally prepared for. It’s thought-provoking and extremely intense to walk through. It features large printed slave ship sketches, a slave pen, etc.

Right outside of the Freedom Center is a waterfront area with a park and suspension bridge to walk on. The suspension bridge goes over the Ohio River and connects Covington Kentucky with Cincinnati.

IMG_0389

We also visited the Cincinnati Art Museum , which is free and has a fantastic clothing exhibit and other amazing artwork! It was a beautiful museum to visit. Other places we visited there were Spring Grove Cemetery, which had some beautiful graves and other structures within the arboretum.

IMG_0386

Even though there was a wedding going on and we couldn’t explore the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption completely, we were able to see the nave inside and the beautiful building on the outside. I would like to go back when it’s not full of wedding guests to explore the rest of it.

IMG_0387

After sightseeing, we ate dinner at a restaurant called Taft’s Ale House , which boasts a very decadent menu. It was in an old building and had great food, beer, and cocktails.

Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Brecksville Ohio

2-hour drive from Columbus

Believe it or not, Cuyahoga Valley National Park is the only national park in the state of Ohio. You’ll find it north of Columbus and close to Cleveland. If you love nature, you’ll be blown away by the natural beauty found along the Cuyahoga River, including caves, Brandywine Falls , and the Blue Hen waterfall.

If you’re up for hiking trails, there’s a historic canal that you can traverse on foot. That canal connects Ohio to the rest of the country by stretching to Lake Erie in the north.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame is a wonderland for fans of the gridiron and day trips from Columbus Ohio. You can take a guided tour or tour the Hall of Fame at your leisure, soaking up the history and checking out the busts of some of the greatest players in the National Football League.

Much like the rock hall, you can see exhibits from some of the greatest players. Additionally, you can see some of the game’s greatest artifacts — including jerseys and balls from memorable games.

Pro Football Hall of Fame, Canton - Things to See Before You Die, Columbus Day Trips

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland Ohio

2-hour and 15-minute drive from Columbus

What to See in Chagrin Falls Ohio

Chagrin Falls is an adorable little suburb of Cleveland. The main area has an old-timey popcorn shop , Jeni’s Ice Cream, and the actual waterfall to view. The town is fun to walk around and explore.

When we went, we had a Groupon for an adorable bed and breakfast called The Club at Hillbrook . The rooms are beautiful, spacious, and elegant. We ate dinner in the main restaurant, which had cute string lights and overlooked the large property.

You can also walk around the property and enjoy some of the interesting trails and nature nearby.

Enjoy Greater Cleveland Ohio

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Chagrin Falls shouldn’t be the only things you see while you’re in C-town. If the weather is cooperative, you can tour some of the city’s most historic neighborhoods.

If you’re itching to shop, the historic West Side Market offers some of the freshest food you’re likely to find anywhere. Also, check out the Cleveland Arcade, which is home to equally impressive stores and restaurants.

If you’re a fan of “A Christmas Story,” the house used in the movie can be found in the Tremont neighborhood and has been renovated to look exactly as it did in the movie. There are even more  Cleveland day trip  ideas to explore too.

Newport aquarium in newport kentucky.

Just across the river is Newport Kentucky, where I’ve visited the wonderful Newport Aquarium and waterfront area. If you love the sea, you’ll see plenty of animals — including a giant Pacific octopus, sharks, sea turtles, rays, and a giant grouper.

If you’re looking for a fun family day trip from Columbus, especially with young kids, this is the place to go. Your children’s eyes will light up in wonder as they see rare white alligators, penguins, and thousands of the most exotic creatures in the world.

There’s even a rope bridge that crosses over the top of a tank full of sharks. Also, check out one of the newest exhibits, Shipwreck: Realm of the Eels, where you can see a sunken ship and the creatures that live in and around it.

I’ve been to Cincinnati twice to see the aquarium, which is amazing. The aquarium is a great place to visit at any time of the year , but winter is a fun time to visit the turtles and alligators.

If you’re feeling adventurous, visit Gallup Park, Ann Arbor’s most popular recreation area. Here you can rent canoes, kayaks, and paddleboats. You can go on nature walks, or stop to have a family picnic. If you own a boat, there’s even a boat launch, so you can spend the day fishing or tubing.

Coopers Rock State Forest in Bruceton Mills West Virginia

3-hour and 30-minute drive from Columbus

I just visited Coopers Rock State Forest on our way back from Maryland.  The views are beautiful, and I didn’t get a chance to explore the entire place.

The main lookout point was very crowded with people, although I think it was the time of year and time of day we went. There was perfect October weather in the afternoon! I suspect if you aim to go here in the morning, it will be less crowded, and when you get to some of the main trails it won’t be so bad.

best columbus day weekend trips

There’s a main overlook area, with pay-to-view finders, and then there are hiking trails you can take that will bring you off the main overlook to an underlook. There’s also a gift shop and a park. If it’s nice out, I think you can really make a full day of it.

5 Adorable Colonial Destinations for Columbus Day Weekend

In our humble opinion, autumn is the perfect time for a trip; the crowds of summer are gone and the cold snap isn't close enough to be acknowledged as a real threat – yet. So considering all this, Columbus Day weekend falls (get it?) in a sweet spot, making it the ideal time to take a quick trip.

Now, did you know Columbus never set foot on the U.S. mainland? That his hair had gone completely white by the time he was in his thirties? Or that he was the eldest of five siblings? Maybe yes, maybe no, whatever – because whether you’re a Columbus nut or not, there is no better time to head off on a getaway embracing all the tradition and culture (not to mention fall colors) of the country he "discovered."

So make like Christopher and get your exploring game on with these five colonial destinations for Columbus Day weekend.

There’s a reason Boston is number one when it comes to colonial-inspired activities – and it has everything to do with the famous Freedom Trail. If you haven’t visited the Massachusetts city before, well, you’re in for a good time and a history lesson to boot. Take the Freedom Trail Tour led by a "genuine" historical character from the period (this writer did and if you’re out there Isaiah Thomas, thank you) and see the graves of Samuel Adams and John Hancock, as well as the scene of the battle of the Old South Meeting House, plus Paul Revere’s House, the oldest remaining structure in downtown Boston.

And when you’re tired of history and culture, you can stroll the old cobbled streets, visit the country’s first public library, and take in the always inspiring Boston Institute of Contemporary Art. Oh, wait: That’s yet more great history and culture.

Newport, RI

The colonial settlers who chose Newport to set up their new liberal community, established in 1639, picked well. The relaxed, charming small town provides a great antidote to the stresses of every day life. If you’re on a budget, then know that a lot of the great aspects of Newport are to be found outdoors for free. For instance, spend a large chunk of time walking the famous ocean-side coastal walk and exploring the peninsula of Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge .

Rusty fall colors should be heating up to deep oranges and reds by mid-October and when you’re ready to head inside, get cozy with some awesome seafood – specifically lobster – at the likes of the Brick Alley Pub. Eat too much and then walk it off with yet more hiking as you take a surreptitious tour of the stunning Newport mansions before heading to neighboring Saunderstown to see the home of Gilbert Stuart – the man who painted George Washington's portrait for the one dollar bill.

Savannah, GA

Visit Savannah for Columbus Day weekend and even once you’ve experienced the charm of the history of Georgia’s "Hostess City," there’s still the hipster side to explore. On the side of history, the city boasts stunning churches like the Independent Presbyterian, tranquil squares featuring the quintessential drooping Live Oak trees of the South, the historic Mercer house, and a whole lot more. Next comes the hipster, less Columbus-like side. Thanks in part to the presence of the Savannah College of Art & Design, an established creative community calls the city home, which means plenty of good coffee shops, vintage stores, a great art scene, and microbreweries like the Southbound Brewing Company to test out.

Philadelphia, PA

Since its colonial origins, Philadelphia has given the world many firsts – root beer and the slinky just two of them. And while it’s undoubtedly one of America’s most important historical cities (birthplace of the nation, anyone?), you’ll find much more in Philly than the Liberty Bell for a ding-dong Columbus Day weekend.

Naturally, you’ll want historic culture – so go visit the Liberty Bell Center, take the Philadelphia Trail, and hit up Independence Hall; but make sure to indulge in everything else that the vibrant city has on offer. Think clear, crisp sunsets at Benjamin Franklin Bridge, climbing the "Rocky Steps" at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and a good dose of that sweet fall foliage at Longwood Gardens.

New Orleans, LA

While Washington, D.C. might be the obvious place to end our list, we thought we’d opt instead for New Orleans , a city whose awesome colonial architecture gets even more beautiful when surrounded by fall colors. Along with the grand buildings bathed in mid-October sun, the beautiful sights of Cypress trees turning burnt orange, and rusty leaves dropping into the Mississippi, the Creole city is the perfect Columbus Day vacation spot because it loves a festival – so you can be sure of finding something special going on.

It’s fall and the temperatures have dropped, so bunking down in a stylish French Quarter hotel is one way to enjoy part of the weekend away, but the rest of the fun of New Orleans is out on the streets and in the bars. Catch a brass band at the House of Blues, take a jazz ferry cruise, drink Sazeracs – what else? – at the Roosevelt Hotel’s Sazerac Restaurant, eat a fried shrimp po’ boy at the famous Parkway Bakery & Tavern, and finish up with yet more food, drink, and music at Beignet Fest – New Orleans’ official 133rd annual festival – on Saturday, October 8.

48-Hour Itinerary

48 Hours in Columbus: The Ultimate Itinerary

best columbus day weekend trips

The capital city of Ohio boasts all the friendliness and hospitality you’d expect of a major Midwestern metropolis, but what you may not know is that Columbus is also one of the most surprisingly stylish fashion centers in the United States. Trailing only New York and Los Angeles in its number of resident fashion designers (many of whom cut their teeth locally at the Columbus College of Art and Design), Columbus rolls out the red carpet to savvy fashionistas with chic boutiques lining the Short North Arts District and upscale open-air shopping centers anchored by premium retailers. Add in stunning green spaces, world-class cultural destinations, a wow-worthy culinary scene, fun kid-friendly attractions and the Ohio State University campus, and you’ve got all the makings of a memorable weekend getaway. These are some of the best suggestions to include on your ultimate 48-hour trip to Columbus, Ohio.

Day 1: Morning

9 a.m.: After your arrival into the John Glenn International Columbus Airport (named for the famed hometown astronaut), rent a car, grab a rideshare, or hop on the Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA) AirConnect bus service for quick transportation directly into the heart of the city. Home to the Greater Columbus Convention Center and the Nationwide Arena, downtown Columbus is also home to a wide variety of hotel franchises to choose from for accommodations in a range of price points. Get your bearings and shake off any lingering jet lag with a quick stroll around the Arena District or a run, walk, or CoGo bikeshare ride along the scenic Scioto Trail greenway that skirts the north/south-running Scioto River on the western edge of downtown through parks, under bridges, and past landmarks.

11:30 a.m.: As you get hungry for lunch, set a course to the vibrant historic North Market in the Short North Arts District, and let your appetite run wild. Within a covered open marketplace that dates back to 1876, this eclectic resident lineup of more than 30 local food vendors and merchants proposes all sorts of nosh to consider from soup to nuts, as well as bagels, baked goods, produce, an array of ethnic cuisines, meats, seafood, and coffee. If you can’t find something to eat here, you’re just out of luck. Nibble and sample away to your heart’s content, and then cap off your lunchtime feast with a scoop of Brown Butter Almond Brittle, Brambleberry Crisp or decadent Darkest Chocolate from the Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams stand; all products are made right here in Columbus.

Day 1: Afternoon

1 p.m.: After lunching at North Market, you’re now fueled up to shop and gallery hop ‘til you drop along High Street, the lifeblood thoroughfare of the Short North Arts District. Anchored by a series of fanciful steel arches, the epicenter of Columbus’s fashion scene claims some of the best boutiques and forward-thinking art galleries in town. Browse through customer service-oriented shops like Tigertree, Rowe, Ladybird, and Happy Go Lucky Her for apparel and accessories that’ll have you looking like you just stepped off a runway. Homage is the place to find quirky retro T-shirts, and relive your childhood at Big Fun through a whimsical and overwhelming inventory of vintage toys, board games, and collectible figures. Short North Gallery Hop events on the first Saturday of each month provide the perfect occasion to duck in and out of local makers’ studios at will to enjoy exhibitions, live music, food, and drink.

3:30 p.m.: Cool off and take a breather by popping in the contemporary PIzzuti Collection of the Columbus Museum of Art, sited within a gorgeous three-story historic Beaux Arts office building on the edge of Goodale Park. Highlighting a diverse and ever-evolving rotation of holdings from the personal collection of local philanthropists Ron and Ann Pizzuti, the facility also hosts thought-provoking displays, lectures, and traveling exhibits.

Day 1: Evening

6 p.m.: It’s happy hour, and Columbus boasts tons of fun watering holes in which to wet your whistle, from trendy mixology-driven hotspots to casual neighborhood dives and beer gardens. One of the most popular perches in the city, the see-and-be-seen Lincoln Social Rooftop lounge shakes up creative and classic cocktails to enjoy al fresco with views of the bustling Short North district nine stories down below. Or pop into the Short North Pint House for a cold beer and a few laughs with friends in a festive outdoor courtyard.

8 p.m.: Round out your first day in Columbus with a leisurely dinner. You can’t go wrong with any restaurant in the Cameron Mitchell family. From humble beginnings, this hometown restaurateur has created an upscale dining empire that now features 15 different concepts and three dozen locations in Ohio and across several other states, all constructed on the tenets of top-shelf food quality and service. The sleek Guild House turns out plates of farm-to-table cuisine, the Pearl specializes in oysters and fresh seafood, and Marcella’s delights with updated Italian comfort foods like charcuterie, cheeses, pizzas, pastas, and delectable desserts. Downtown, the Four-Diamond M at Miranova impresses guests with its faultless surf and turf presentations and its classy fine-dining atmosphere.

Day 2: Morning

8:30 a.m.: Some of the best breakfast eats in town, the pillowy sweet pancake balls at Katalina’s are made with locally produced Fowler’s Mills flour wrapped around Nutella, apple-pumpkin butter or dulce de leche fillings and served alongside thick-cut bacon for salty-sweet flavor perfection. Old school in the best possible way, Jack and Benny’s serves up omelets, hash browns and other diner classics with the same warm welcome customers have come to expect since the 1950s. Meanwhile, Fox in the Snow tempts patrons with sophisticated French pastries, scones, biscuits, and donuts, all washed down with skillfully prepared coffee drinks.

10 a.m.: Spend the morning communing with Mother Nature at the Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens beside the expansive Franklin Park. The Victorian-style John F. Wolfe Palm House took shape back in 1895 and today is home to lush greenhouse displays of living foliage. Across the 13-acre site, guests can also admire seasonal butterflies, stroll through painstakingly landscaped outdoor green spaces and a community garden, and enjoy viewing a lovely collection of works by renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly.

Day 2: Afternoon

12 p.m.: Break for lunch at one of Columbus’s many casual mid-day eateries. With a handful of locations scattered around town, Northstar Café, the signature veggie burger stands out amid a well-edited menu of brick oven-fired pizzas, salads, and sandwiches. Mediterranean fare with flair is the name of the game at Brassica in the Short North district; think fresh hummus plates and pita sandwiches stuffed with falafel, chicken shawarma, or house-pickled vegetables. And Brown Bag Deli is the place to go for flavorful specialty sandwiches like the Weezie’s Cheesie, Ben’s Black and Blue, the meaty Spice of Life, or an exemplary Cuban.

2 p.m.: Keep the cultural vibe alive with a wander through the world-class Columbus Museum of Art. Originally known as the Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts at the time of its founding in the 1870s, this encyclopedic art museum underwent a massive expansion and renovation in 2015 that added the airy new 50,000 square-foot Walter Wing. Significant holdings cover European art, American art, folk art, glass art, and regional works by Columbus-area creators.

4 p.m.: If the lovingly manicured Topiary Garden on the grounds of the Old Deaf School Park looks familiar, that’s because it’s actually a life-sized recreation of “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of LaGrande Jatte” by Impressionist artist Georges Seurat (on permanent display at the Art Institute of Chicago and featured in “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”). The park is free to visit and open daily to the public dawn to dusk year-round, but summer’s the best time to go if you want to see the living recreation in full bloom.

Day 2: Evening

6 p.m.: Defined by historical details and old-world charm, Columbus’s German Village just to the south of downtown accommodates brick sidewalks, quaint parks, independent businesses, thoughtfully preserved architecture and a thriving LGBTQ community. Take your time for a walk around the neighborhood before settling in to one of the district’s diverse restaurant choices for dinner. For an authentic taste of hearty German spaetzle, schnitzel, and strudel, belly up to Schmidt’s Restaurant und Sausage Haus, a Columbus dining institution since 1886. Prost! Or explore the flavors of Spanish tapas at Barcelona, feast on modern American fare at Lindey’s, or squeeze in a date night at romantic G. Michael’s Bistro and Bar.

7:30 p.m.: The largest resident ensemble theater troupe in the country, Shadowbox Live presents an ongoing schedule of cabaret-style productions with food and drink served before the show and during intermission. Formed in 1988, the 60-member company performs out of a dedicated German Village-adjacent space in the Brewery District. Blending rock opera and dance performance with sketch comedy and new media, every production is guaranteed to be unique and provides material for scintillating post-show discussion.

Day 3: Morning

8:30 a.m.: Wind down your time in Columbus by treating yourself to a sumptuous brunch. Driven by seasonality, Skillet delivers a brunch menu of hearty American favorites with a twist—biscuits and chorizo gravy, a brisket and potato omelet, grilled figs, and lemon soufflé pancakes. An extensive selection of omelets, pancakes, Benedicts, and breakfast sandwiches makes the decision-making process difficult at the sunny Blunch urban café. Or head to Pistacia Vera for brunch with continental flair—quiche, smoked salmon tartare, exquisite croissants, and picture-perfect macarons in a rainbow of colors and flavors.

10 a.m.: Visitors of all ages can feel like kids again after a couple hours of exploration at the Center of Science and Industry, “COSI” to locals. Wander through the awe-inspiring dinosaur gallery, a DC Superheroes exhibit, a giant screen theater, the largest planetarium in Ohio, and lots of interactive STEM-focused activities to engage and educate young minds.

1 p.m.: Wrap up your Columbus journey by paying tribute to our nation’s heroes at the National Veterans Memorial and Museum, opened in late 2018. From the approach, the building cuts a dashing figure on the banks of the Scioto River with a striking arched concrete and glass architectural design. Inside, the Core Exhibit galleries honor veterans who’ve served in all four branches of United States military service in times of war and peace. The park-like grounds that surround the museum offer an opportunity for quiet reflection and one last glimpse of the downtown skyline.

Hey Readers!!

Travelers who travel in the beginning of October may be able to take advantage of a few more weeks of beautiful weather before the cold of winter sets in. As a result, many people take advantage of the long weekend that Columbus Day offers to travel to a new place by car, plane, or train to experience the best Columbus Day weekend getaways for perfect vacations with your family.

How do I get to Columbus?

To get to the city of Columbus, visitors have a few options; by car, plane, or bus. If arriving by plane there are 2 different airports to choose from, John Glenn International Airport and Rickenbacker.

John Glenn International Airport (CLM) is usually the best option. The airport is located within the city, about a 15-minute drive from downtown.

Rickenbacker International Airport (LCK) tends to have cheaper flights but is a smaller airport located outside of the city limits, about a 30-minute drive from downtown.

Visitors can drive themselves if they are within distance, Columbus has a lot of public parking areas located in the city, or opt for the Greyhound bus. Columbus has a Greyhound Bus station located in the downtown area, so depending on your original destination, there may be a route available.

What is the best time to visit Columbus?

The best time to visit Columbus is between the months of April and October. Columbus is known for its abundance of sports teams, especially The Ohio State University Buckeyes. During this time there are a number of sporting events going on, as well as other various events, festivals, concerts, and celebrations.

Due to its Midwestern location in the United States, Columbus has all four seasons and tends to have pretty stable weather throughout the year. Especially during fall, temperatures and weather conditions are almost perfect for outdoor activities.

Where should I stay in Columbus?

Columbus is filled with a lot of exciting and unique different neighborhoods. Due to The Ohio State University being located within Columbus, the city itself has a high number of different cultural and ethnic groups all over the city.

During your Columbus weekend trip, the most recommended areas to stay in are The Short North and The Italian Village . Both are located within the downtown region. If traveling on a budget, go a little further north to the University District, which has more budget-friendly options due to the high number of young and broke college students.

If visiting Columbus in June-October, be sure to stop at The North Market . Going back over 140 years, The North Market will be one of the biggest and most pristine farmers’ markets you’ve ever seen. It is very high quality, with an array of fresh and unique foods and treats.

After the hustle and bustle of the morning market, spend your afternoon at the Scioto Mile . It is one of the best outdoor areas in the city, hosting various events, concerts, and festivals, and has amazing views of the city . If you are visiting during the summer, there will be events happening here on a weekly basis.

Even if there are no events occurring, you can still explore the miles of trails along the river, rent a bike from the CoGo Bike Share, or go on a guided kayak or canoe trip.

Ohio residents are very proud of their sports teams, especially in Columbus. Try to spend an evening at some kind of sporting event. Even if you aren’t into sports, the atmosphere alone makes for a night of pure fun.

Depending on when you visit, spectators can watch hockey at Nationwide Arena , football at the OSU Shoe , or soccer at Crew Stadium.

Day 3 in Columbus:

10 Day Trips from Columbus, Ohio—Local’s Guide

pinterest pin for day trips from Columbus, Ohio

People love to joke about how there’s nothing to do in Ohio, and as a native Ohioan, I’ve made my fair share of those jokes. While Ohio doesn’t have the most varied landscapes compared to the coasts, there are still plenty of interesting places to go and things to do.

I was born and raised in Columbus, so I’ve had plenty of time to explore the surrounding area. Here are some unique places to take a day or weekend trip, all within 2 hours of the city. Stay till the end for a free, interactive map!

Day/Weekend Trips from Columbus, Ohio

Note: Ohio doesn’t have a very robust public transport system, so all the time/distance estimates are based on driving times.

1. Yellow Springs

Distance: 1 hour Best for: small town charm, hippie vibes, hiking

The town of Yellow Springs in the fall with a yellow-leaf tree on the left and a mint building on the right with people selling tie dye shirts

Yellow Springs was originally founded in 1825 as a socialist utopian society. These days, it’s a colorful hippie town full of unique shops and restaurants. Rose & Sal is my personal favorite with its wide selection of vintage decor.

If you enjoy hiking, there’s around 11 miles of easy to moderate trails across three parks, including the Glen Helen Nature Preserve, John Bryan State Park, and Clifton Gorge .

Clifton Gorge is my favorite, as it has the most dramatic lanscapes with the layers of worn-away rock and turquoise waters. Nearby, you’ll find the 19th-century Clifton Mill where you can buy freshly-ground flour, take quaint photos, or have a meal overlooking the water. (Clifton is technically another town, but it’s only a few miles away).

See my post on things to do in Yellow Springs for more recommendations!

Want to extend your trip? Consider staying at this two-story cabin in Clifton.

2. Walnut Woods Metro Park

Distance: 30 minutes Best for: easy walks and photoshoots

Back of woman walking on a paved trail through a forest of tall pine trees at Tall Pines Area Walnut Woods

If you’re looking for a pleasant walk or photoshoot location, you can get both at Walnut Woods. In this metro park, you’ll find paved and unpaved trails, with one of the paved trails going through the stunning Tall Pines Area . This part of the forest feels especially peaceful and almost otherwordly. The impressive trees make for a lovely photo backdrop, and you’ll frequently see engagement or family shoots in the woods. If you do come for a photoshoot, be sure to be mindful of others using the trails.

For a similar forest experience, you can also visit Oak Openings Preserve Metro Park near Toledo. The park there is much larger and has more trails, but is further away (about 2.5 hours).

3. Hocking Hills

Distance: 1 hour Best for: hiking, antiques

Me with my back facing the camera looking at Rock House

Hocking Hills is a classic destination, and some of you may be groaning since you’ve been there countless times on school and family trips.

Most people do the Old Man’s Cave trail, which is just over 1 mile total and features some small waterfalls and interesting rock formations. You can also extend the hike to Cedar Falls, which is 6 miles round-trip.

If you’ve been-there-done-that, consider some of the other trails in Hocking Hills! I enjoyed the short 1-mile hike at Rock House , which had some impressive sandstone caves. Cantwell Cliffs is another 2-mile hike that has some scenic views. You can also try ziplining with Hocking Hills Canopy Tours .

If you like antiques, make a stop at the Logan Antique Mall on your way home. There are countless booths with quirky housewares and decorations.

Want to extend your trip? Consider staying at Hocking Cottage or this quaint guesthouse .

4. Mansfield

Distance: 1 hour Best for: thrifting, small town charm

City News neon sign in downton Mansfield Ohio

In my opinion, Mansfield isn’t a super interesting destination in itself, but it’s home to an incredible Volunteers of America thrift store. The one at 1280 Park Ave W is full of affordable and stylish finds. I purchased a handful of things from there four years ago, and I still regularly wear all of those pieces.

While the town itself is small, there’s a cute carousel for families and a popular coffee shop called Relax, It’s Just Coffee.

5. Mohican State Park

Distance: 1 hour Best for: hiking, kayaking

Mohican is another classic destination for outdoorsy folks. There are miles and miles of trails for hiking, trail running, and mountain biking. In fact, there are annual ultramarathons and ultra bike races in the park that go up to 100 miles! The trails can be pretty hilly and rocky, so I’d recommend wearing hiking boots.

People also like to picnic, camp, and kayak in the area. For active travelers, Mohican Adventures has a 7- or 15-mile canoeing route and an aerial adventure park.

Want to extend your trip? Consider staying at this cabin nestled in the heart of the park.

6. Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Distance: 1-2 hours Best for: easy hikes, biking, farmer’s markets

The overlook at Ledge's Trail during the golden hour, with the sun filtering through the trees

Ohio’s only national park isn’t all that far from Columbus, depending on which part of the park you want to visit.

A popular trail is Ledges Trail , an easy two-mile hike with 200 feet of elevation gain. You’ll walk through impressive layered rock structures and finish at a scenic overlook, where many people watch the sunset.

There are also several waterfalls of all sizes, including larger Brandywine Falls and small (but lovely) Blue Hen Falls .

If hiking isn’t for you, you can bike along the Erie Canal Towpath, ride the scenic railway, or stop at the Szalay’s Farm & Market.

See my post on Cuyahoga Valley National Park for more details!

Want to extend your trip? Consider staying at  Country Inn and Suites , a 10-15 minute drive from the most popular parts of the park.

7. Amish Country

Distance: 2 hours Best for: rural landscapes, antiques, local food

Old white garage covered in vintage signs

Amish Country is home to the Amish community, a religious group best known for rejecting modern technology. You can learn about Amish history and their lifestyle at The Apline Hills Museum or The Amish Farm and House .

Popular stops include Sugarcreek, which is known as the “Little Switzerland” of Ohio. The small town has some classic Swiss architecture and the world’s largest cuckoo clock (it sounds more impressive than it is haha, but it’s still very cute). For all your fairy garden needs, visit the Secret Garden shop . It feels like a different world inside the store with the floral decorations, tiny figurines, and indoor fountains.

For a huge antique mall and craft mall, check out the Berlin Village Antique Mall . I would avoid the Walnut Creek Flea Market since it’s mostly mass-produced goods and isn’t really a flea market at all. There are some lovely local sellers, but it’s mainly a tourist trap.

As a plant-based traveler, I noticed that the area doesn’t have a lot of vegan-friendly options, but Park St. Pizza had delicious vegan pizza and a build your own option.

I also want to note that the area is very visibly pro-Trump and pro-gun (like most of rural Ohio), so certain people may not feel comfortable or safe there. The Amish generally don’t participate in politics, but the other residents of the area will have political signs in their yards and sell merch in local shops (it’s very prevalent at the Walnut Creek Flea Market).

8. Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park

Distance: 30 minutes Best for: walking, nature center, bison

Herd of bison in their prairie enclosure at Battelle Darby

A herd of bison roams across two large prairies in Battle Darby Creek Metro Park. Come to see the bison, walk the trails, or visit the nature center. There are trails from .2 to 12.5 miles of all hiking levels across the park’s 7,000 acres of land. The nature center is small, but has a sunny observation deck overlooking the prairies and has plenty of educational resources on the bison and surrounding wildlife.

9. Cleveland

Distance: 2 hours Best for: food, rock n’ roll, art

Cleveland Arcarde Victorian architecture

Commonly mistaken as the capital of Ohio, Cleveland has plenty to do for families, friend groups, and solo travelers.

The Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame is probably the most iconic attraction, featuring interactive exhibits and items used by rock and roll legends.

Foodies will appreciate the West Side Market , which has 100 vendors offering produce, desserts, and ready-to-eat meals. Columbus residents may see it as the Cleveland equivalent of our North Market.

One of the most photo-worthy spots is the Cleveland Arcade , which was the very first indoor shopping center in America. The exposed beams and Victorian architecture are really stunning. Nowadays, the shopping isn’t that interesting, and individual stores have limited hours, but it’s worth stopping by just to admire the building.

The Cleveland Museum of Art has a wide collection of art from around the world. Admission is free, though some special exhibitions and events may have an extra charge.

Want to extend your trip? Consider staying at this downtown condo .

10. Cincinnati

Distance: 2 hours Best for:  city views, museums, sports

Suspension bridge overlooking the Ohio River into Cincinnati at sunset

Another major city in Ohio, Cincinnati is right along the Ohio River at the southern border of the state. Take a walk along the riverfront and laze around on the swinging benches overlooking the water. You can even stroll across the John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge and end up in Kentucky!

The city is also home to the American Sign Museum , which is is dedicated to literal signs from 1870-1970. You can your fix of neon sign pics for your Instagram haha.

Want to extend your trip? Consider staying in this modern apartment with a lovely view of the city.

That’s so interesting they wanted to start a socialist society. It seems the area has a lot of alternative lifestyle models in terms of people who want to live apart from the rest of society. Super interesting. The Amish have always kind of fascinated me because they speak a very outdated version of German, but I had no idea they were pro-Trump (or is that mainly the rest of the population in the area?).

It is such an interesting area! I adore Yellow Springs because it’s a super progressive bubble in the middle of rural Ohio haha. I believe the Amish don’t really participate in politics; it’s mainly the other residents of the area that have their Trump signs and merch in local shops.

Why did you say if they feel safe because it’s a pro Trump area. Are you insane? It’s not the East side of Columbus Ohio where gangs are at for God’s sake. So sad you felt the need to “go there” with that awful comment. You’re no longer welcome to our town with that horribly troubled attitude of hatred.😢

You’ve literally just proved my point by being hateful yourself and saying I’m not welcome in your area, after I merely pointed out that some people may not feel comfortable in an area where people visibly support a person who is hateful towards minorities. I myself had a very uncomfortable experience there that had racist undertones. Hope you find peace in your life.

Good list! I’m surprised Athens wasn’t mentioned, though.

I actually haven’t been yet! Adding it to my list since my parents went to grad school there actually 🙂

15 Best Day Trips from Columbus (Ohio)

Columbus is the capital of the mid-western state of Ohio, and also its largest city.

Known for its numerous parks and world famous university, Columbus is also centrally located between Ohio’s two other big cities: Cleveland and Cincinnati.

It is in the perfect location to be used as a base to gain access to the entire state.

Within reach of Ohio are many opportunities for day tripping, with many historic mid-west cities and towns, such as Newark and Dayton, just a short drive away.

Nature lovers will find plenty of State Parks with hiking trails, cascading waterfalls and beautiful woodland scenery to explore.

Far north of Ohio lies the huge Lake Erie, along with the state’s only National Park: Cuyahoga National Park.

Around the state there are underground caverns, caves and even ancient Native American earthworks: lasting relics from a time long ago that have survived to this day and are an important part of the region’s long history.

1. Hocking Hills

Hocking Hills State Park

Just southeast of Columbus is the Hocking Hills State Park, a must do day trip from the city that takes you to some of the most unusual rock formations in Ohio.

Hocking Hills is the site of caves, cliffs and crevasses, with short and long hikes connecting different parts of the park, as well as opportunities for kayaking, rock climbing and even zip lining.

The real highlight of the Hocking Hills is the cavernous Ash Cave, which forms a huge open recess in the rock that can be walked in and around.

Aside from the Ash Cave, there are many other rock formations to visit; don’t miss out on Cedar Falls, a spectacular waterfall which plunges over giant rocks.

2. Cuyahoga National Park

Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Cuyahoga National Park is Ohio’s only National Park.

Found north of Columbus and close to the city of Cleveland, it is a stunning area of natural beauty that follows the course of the Cuyahoga River, containing walking and cycling trails, waterfalls, and caves to discover.

The National Park also has an historical canal that can be traversed on foot.

This was the first canal in the state, stretching to Lake Erie in the north.

It allowed Ohio to be opened up to the rest of the country and the world by providing a means of entry and exit for people and goods.

Dayton, Ohio

The small, unassuming city of Dayton has played a huge role in the history of aviation.

This is where the Wright Brothers came from, and where they built their first aircraft; going down in history as the pioneers of modern flight.

Dayton, just a day trip away from Columbus, should be visited to see where flight really began.

Today it is also home to the National Museum of the United States Air Force, a very fitting location for one of the largest aviation museums in the world.

World's Largest Picnic Basket, Newark, Ohio

Newark is just 40 miles away, and is a great retreat from the big city.

Here you can find the world’s largest basket, which is actually a huge, company headquarters building shaped and designed to look like a basket.

There is also the interesting Works Museum: a museum dedicated to Newark’s industrial and technical history, where you can learn about glass blowing and canal building alongside the history of the region.

Around Newark there are also numerous ancient earthworks: huge mounds constructed by old Native Indian civilizations, that have survived to this day.

5. Miamisburg Mound

Miamisburg Mound

The Indian mounds aren’t only found around Newark, but exist in most of the state of Ohio.

One of the most interestingly shaped is the towering, conical Miamisburg Mound, raised on a high ridge and visible from miles away.

At 65-feet tall, it features a staircase through the center of the grassy mound which takes visitors to the top for panoramic views out over the surrounding area.

The Mound is one of thousands that have been discovered, the relics of lost civilizations, but Miamisburg is unique because of its height; few other surviving mounds can match it for size.

6. Olentangy Indian Caverns

Olentangy Indian Caverns

If you are interested in Native American history, then another great day trip from Ohio is a journey to the Olentangy Indian Caverns.

This natural cave system was used by the local native Huron people as shelter.

The caverns stretch over three floors and would have provided a refuge and safe haven in times of war, being difficult to find from above ground, let alone enter.

The caverns can be explored on underground tours led by local guides.

7. Tecumseh

Tecumseh Outdoor Historical Drama

Tecumseh is not a place, but a historical show that has to be seen when visiting Ohio.

This is an outdoor drama set in the hills of Ohio, and it tells the story of the local Indians; in particular the chief Tecumseh, who tried in vain to defend his land and people from colonization in the 1700s.

Because it is held outdoors, the show is only performed in the summer months, but it is worth scheduling your Columbus trip to coincide with a showing, as it receives accolades worldwide.

8. Amish Country Ohio

Amish Country Ohio

Northeast of Ohio is Amish Country, made up of several towns and cities, the largest of which is Millersburg.

This is a completely different world, where the Amish communities live in varied ways according to their beliefs in the Bible, meaning there is little technology and lots of faith.

You will see horse drawn carriages on the roads and traditional houses in the towns, while many of the communities actually speak Pennsylvania Dutch as their first language, rather than English.

9. Seneca Caverns

Seneca Caverns

Seneca Caverns is a huge underground cave system with miles of passageways and underground rivers that feed the region’s entire water system.

The cave is multi-layered and to date there are seven underground levels which can be explored.

Guides will take intrepid visitors through the system; exploring the caverns and narrow passages that lead further and further down.

It’s not known how deep the system really goes, but it’s certainly a long way.

10. Ludlow Falls

Ludlow Falls

Ohio has an abundance of beautiful waterfalls due to its rocky landscape, but Ludlow Falls stands out amongst them as a spectacular cascade.

Located near Dayton, not far from Columbus, Ludlow Falls is in fact hidden away beneath a bridge, making it difficult to spot.

The walk there is easy as long as you know where you are going, and it’s a quiet, secluded spot to enjoy Ohio’s enticing natural scenery.

11. Clifton Mill

Clifton Mill, Ohio

Clifton Mill is a beautifully scenic piece of Ohio heritage which dates back to 1802. The Mill is on the banks of the Clifton River, and is spectacular to see, with man-made waterfalls cascading down from its position above the river.

The Mill is water powered, and these days is more of a tourist attraction than a working mill.

There’s an on-site restaurant, and at Christmas time they put on an extravagant light display that’s famous across the state.

12. The Wilds, Cumberland

The Wilds, Cumberland

The Wilds is a unique, open-air Safari in Cumberland Ohio, where the animals roam free and visitors are taken around on big safari trucks to see rare and endangered wildlife in natural settings.

The Wilds is a non-profit organization; they put the animals first, and that’s why the facility is so popular.

They have species from across the world and educate people on conservation and responsibility rather than just providing entertainment at the expense of the captive animals.

13. Salt Fork State Park

Salt Fork Lake, Ohio

Salt Fork State Park is the largest of Ohio’s state parks, covering huge areas of forest east of Columbus.

It’s a beautiful place to hike, bike and get into the heart of Ohio’s natural environment, but it’s also known locally for the legend of Big Foot.

Believe what you will, but local lore says that it’s the home of this mythical creature.

Reported sightings have been made all across Salt Fork since the first European settlers arrived in the 1700s.

Documentaries have been filmed here and hardcore explorers head out into the wild to try and find this legendary creature.

They even hold a Big Foot conference here to celebrate this monstrous legend.

14. Cincinnati

Cincinnati, Ohio

An hour and a half south of Columbus is the city of Cincinnati: the third largest city in Ohio.

It’s the home of the Cincinnati Reds, the oldest baseball team in America.

Once just a sprawling industrial city, Cincinnati has reinvented itself as a tourist destination, offering great food and a growing cultural scene, all spread along the banks of the Ohio River.

The cityscape itself is one of the best reasons to visit, as the center has a huge concentration of distinct, 19th century architectural buildings from Cincinnati’s industrial boom days.

15. Cleveland

Cleveland, Ohio

Cleveland, Ohio’s second largest city, is found in a beautiful setting on the banks of the huge Lake Erie.

It is a culturally and historically significant city, dating back to the early days of European exploration of the Great Lakes.

Today it is most famous for being the home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: a museum showcasing the best of rock from across the world.

9 Delightful Weekend Road Trips From Columbus, Ohio

Posted by Brittany Varano August 11, 2022 Updated February 23, 2023

Grab your fave snacks and crank up the tunes — it’s time for a weekend road trip from Columbus!

Nestled smack dab in the middle of the state, Columbus is near some of the top destinations in Ohio, the Midwest, and even the south. Its convenient location makes visiting the state’s biggest cities and the natural splendor of the Hocking Hills region all the more enticing. Not to mention, Columbus road trippers can reach southern stops in Kentucky and West Virginia around just three hours.

So, the next time you’re free, check out this comprehensive list of the best weekend road trips from Columbus, Ohio.

1. Hocking Hills State Park, Ohio

road trips from columbus - hocking hills

Hocking Hills State Park is, by and large, Ohio’s most popular state park. Nestled in Southeastern Ohio where the rolling foothills of the Appalachian Mountains meet a lush state forest, it’s not surprising why. Visitors from far and wide flock to relish the park’s dramatic caves, overhanging cliffs, and cascading waterfalls. A weekend at Hocking Hills also offers an opportunity to hike miles of trails, kayak in the river, and zipline through the treetops.

The park is especially popular in the fall when the forest shifts to vibrant shades of yellows, reds, and oranges. Weekend visitors can camp in the state park, where modern and primitive campsites, as well as cabin rentals, stand ready to host. The quaint little town of Logan is less than 20-minutes away and offers plenty of cozy accommodation for Hocking Hills visitors, too.

Meandering through downtown is the idyllic Central Canal, where visitors can enjoy a stroll surrounded by skyline views and greenery.

The White River State Park is five minutes from downtown and offers a scenic area to relax, rent bikes, and cruise on a gondola ride. Foodies who wish to embark on a food tour around the city should make their way to St. Elmo Steak House for a shrimp cocktail and Shapiro’s Delicatessen for their corned beef and pastrami. Once home to blue-collar German immigrants, Cincinnati’s Over-the-Rhine features eye-catching 19th-century buildings and, of course, good German food and beer.

Down the road from Over-the-Rhine, you’ll find Findlay Market , Ohio’s longest-running market. For local fares and Saturday farmers market fun, it’s the place to go. If you still have room, no trip to Cincinnati is complete without weighing in on a city-wide feud: who makes the best Cincinnati chili? Skyline and Gold Star are the two opponents, where you can decide which is best for yourself!
