Great Hammerhead Shark Diving Expedition

The best place in the world to dive with great hammerheads.

bimini dive trips

Photo © Andy Murch

Each February huge hammerheads aggregate off the coast of Bimini Island in the northern Bahamas. Generally shy, reclusive animals, the great hammers at Bimini have quickly become a new phenomenon in the shark diving world because of the numbers that show up and their willingness to closely approach divers. Join me on an adventure that you’ll never forget!

As well as diving hammerheads everyday, we also see with quite a few bull sharks and nurse sharks on the hammer dives. The bulls are bold visitors to the hammerhead shark encounters but they are rarely aggressive. This is a great chance to get close up images of a shark with a notorious reputation. We also see blacknose sharks, Caribbean reef sharks, and sometimes blacktip sharks. Lately, Tiger Sharks have become frequent visitors as well.

Shark feeder with a great hammerhead shark

Day 2: After a leisurely breakfast, we’ll jump on the boat for the short 10 minute ride to our shallow great hammerhead spot where the crew will give you a thorough briefing while we wait for the sharks to arrive.

Diving with great hammerhead sharks.

You can expect three dives with the hammerheads, plus you will likely see nurse sharks, bull sharks and maybe a tiger shark or two.

Day 3: Today we will start at Triangle Rocks – a nice reef with Caribbean Reef Sharks and Blacknose Sharks.

After one dive at Triangle Rocks, we will return to our hammerhead spot for two dives with the iconic hammerheads.

Great hammerhead diving

Day 4: This morning we will head over to Gun Cay; a great shallow spot where we see blacknose sharks and the guests can hand feed friendly southern stingrays. In this area we sometimes see juvenile oceanic blacktip sharks too!

As always, we will either start or end the day at our great hammerhead spot.

Day 5: Our last morning of diving with the Great Hammerheads of South Bimini Island.

Diving with a bull shark

And … dive with reef sharks, blacknose sharks, and more at Triangle Rocks!

If endless hammerheads, bull sharks, nurse sharks, and tiger sharks is not enough of a draw, we will also try to squeeze in a shark feed or two at Triangle Rocks and Gun Cay. Triangle Rocks is a coral reef that is home to a healthy population of Caribbean Reef Sharks, Blacknose Sharks and even occasional Caribbean sharpnose sharks. Never heard of these species? That’s just one more reason why Bimini is so special and why it is important to dive with a local Bimini operator that knows where to find every type of shark!

Kick back in comfort 🙂

After a hard day of diving, relax at the historic Bimini Big Game Club; Ernest Hemingway’s favourite Bahamian hideaway.

Delivering world-class wildlife encounters since 2010

Big fish expeditions founder andy murch has spent the last three decades chasing big animals all over the world. few people have andy’s knowledge and organizational skills necessary to put together a professional expedition. have a look through some of the comments from our guests: testimonials., guest feedback, another great adventure with big fish expeditions.

Just returned from my second trip with BFE and it went off perfectly. The true adventure of these trips always present challenging logistics but they pulled it off flawlessly. I would highly recommend BFE to anyone looking to get “off the grid” and experience a wildlife trip of a lifetime. I am looking forward to my next adventure with them. Thanks again!!

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING TIME WITH BIG FISH EXPEDITIONS

Andy is one of the best in the business. I would highly, highly recommend anyone interested in an animal focused trip to go with big fish expeditions.  The quality of experience and knowledge of the trip leader really sets them apart. Expect to get your fill of animals no matter what the trip is. Andy is also great at finding other animals to incorporate within the trips.  If you’re looking for a shark trip or big animal experience, this is your place. Period.  Enjoy!

GO. YOU WILL NEVER REGRET IT!

I have been on 3 Big Fish Expeditions trips by now and have more trips to look forward to in the near future. First of all I share a big passion for sharks, whale and other big marine life and Big Fish Expedition is all about that. As an amateur photographer is great to be among equals and even better to get new tips and ideas from professionals.

Andy is very helpful showing new tricks and talk about UW photography in between dives. Sure the destinations offers world class diving but it’s also about the people and the relation to people and Andy surely gives everyone the feeling of being very welcome and try to give everyone a lifetime experience.

Another good thing is that Andy is maybe the only pro shooters who offers trips to very reasonable prices. I won’t go into details about all the good dives I’ve done with Big Fish but instead say GO, you will never regret it!

Scuba Diving in the Bahamas: Bimini Islands

Dreaming of scuba diving in the Bahamas? We’ll show you the best dive sites in the Bimini Islands, where to stay, and why the this exciting destination make a top choice for your next dive trip.

Table of Contents

Why go scuba diving in the Bahamas?

The warm shallow waters have allowed a vibrant reef system to develop. Five percent of the Earth’s coral is found in the Bahamas. This is more coral than Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. Visibility of over 200 feet is an everyday treat in the turquoise waters of the Bahamas. It’s no wonder that the Bahamians consider their islands the Dive Capital of the World.

The Bahamas offers a complete range of diving adventures. Visitors can find dive charter operators on all of the main islands. Many offer certification and equipment rentals. Most can offer a complete vacation package with diving, hotel and transportation.

Several charters offer liveaboard trips which allow you to dive, dive, dive all day from the comfort of a liveaboard boat. There are charters for snorkelers, novice divers, and caves, wrecks and Blue Holes for the advanced diver. Dive charters also offer opportunities to swim with dolphins and observe sharks .

A little bit about the Bahamas

The Bahamas are a part of an archipelago of 700 islands covering 100,000 square miles of the Western Atlantic ocean. The Spanish explorers called these islands “baja mar,” which means shallow sea. The islands are formed by a plateau that is sunken beneath shallow waters. The average depth along the shorelines is 20 feet, making it easy to explore with a tank or without one. The plateau is cut by a deep underwater trench, the Tongue of the Ocean, where the depth drops vertically from 150 feet to thousands of feet. The Gulf Stream brings a huge variety of marine life as it courses between Florida and the Bahamas.

bimini dive trips

New Providence Island and Grand Bahama Island are the most populated and are the islands most visited by tourists. Nearly every cruise ship that sails from a beach paradise of Miami, Florida , will be making a stop in either Nassau (the capital city located on New Providence) or in Freeport, Grand Bahama. Some of the best diving takes place on the Out Islands: Andros, Abacos, the Biminis, Berry Islands, Acklins/Crooked Island, Eleuthera, the Exumas, Cat Island, San Salvador, Long Island, Inagua, and Mayaguana.

Where to scuba dive in the Bahamas: Bimini Islands

The Bimini Islands, near the northwest corner of the Great Bahama Bank, are the closest Bahamian Islands to the United States. This means it is also the island group farthest from the rest of the Bahamas. This remoteness has left Bimini with a unique, laid-back, rustic, small-town feel that many visitors return to again and again.

How to get to the Bimini Islands : You can combine scuba diving in Florida with your trip to Bimini because it is just 50 miles from Miami and  many people travel here on their own boats in about three hours. Charter air flights are also available from Miami and Ft. Lauderdale. You can fly by seaplane into North Bimini, or by small jet into South Bimini.

A little bit about the Bimini Islands

Bimini consists of North Bimini, South Bimini, and several smaller islands and cays. The islands were settled by emancipated slaves from Nassau. Rum runners made frequent visits to Bimini during the Prohibition. The tiny islands were made famous in the 1950s when Ernest Hemingway visited frequently after learning of the excellent gamefishing near Bimini. Hemingway hung out at The Compleat Angler in Alice Town on North Bimini. The Compleat Angler was the island hotspot on Saturday nights where a Calypso band played and the rum punch flowed freely. Unfortunately, the Compleat Angler burned down to the ground January 13th, 2006 (Friday the 13th!)

Where to stay in Bimini Islands

Alice Town, on North Bimini, is the commercial center of Bimini. Many hotels, bars and restaurants can be found there along the main street of King’s Highway. The Chalk’s seaplane lands there. The largest hotels have marina facilities. Many dive charters operate from Alice Town. If you decide to spend a day on land, there are several public beaches, an Open Air Market, and the Hemingway Museum.

The island is tiny enough that you can walk around it in half a day. Or rent a bicycle or golf cart for exploring. Bimini follows British driving laws and there are just as many golf carts & bicycles on the road as cars, so use caution. North Bimini is connected to South Bimini by ferry. South Bimini is quieter and mostly residential, but more and more cottages, condos, and resorts are developing here each year.

Marine life in Bimini Islands

More than 20 of Bimini’s dive spots have permanent mooring buoys installed and available for you. The dives in the Gulfstream waters range from the exploration of shallow waters to wall drops and wreck diving.

Head to the deep waters of the Gulfstream to the West of Bimini for a chance to spot dolphins, turtles, stingrays and even nurse or reef sharks .

Snorkeling is possible from the public beaches and from hotel beaches. One of the most interesting sites to dive or snorkel is the legendary “Atlantis Road.”

Just offshore of North Bimini are limestone blocks in about 15-20 feet of water. Many people speculate that the blocks are the remains of an underwater road to the lost continent of Atlantis. Whether you believe in the legend of Atlantis or not, this site is still a great dive spot.

Many divers consider Tuna Alley and the Victory Reefs to be some of the best dive sites in the Caribbean. These prolific reefs are home to thousands of colorful fish and corals. The reefs gradually slope from 40 feet to 100 feet into the Florida Straits with plenty of drop-offs, swim-throughs and caverns to explore. The Sapona is a very shallow wreck perfect for snorkelers. Much of the rusted ship is above water. Another popular deep water wreck is the Bimini Barge which has structure visible in depths of 65-100 feet of water.

The best dive sites in Bimini Islands

Average Depth : 50 ft. / 15 m Max Depth : 100 ft. / 30 m

  • Wall or Drop-off
  • Mooring Buoys

With its pristine beaches, the Tuna Alley is often called one of the best dive sites in all of the Caribbean. Divers can swim along a 45 feet canyon that gently slopes down to 80-100 feet. This spot is similar to diving in Japanese Gardens in Aqaba, Jordan .

When the Gulf Stream current is running, the Tuna Alley site is a great drift dive. Its name comes from the schools of tuna often found swimming along the reef. The large species you might encounter in the deep blue water are loggerhead turtles and reef or nurse sharks.

Victory Reef

Average Depth : 40 ft. / 12 m Max Depth : 85 ft. / 26 m

  • 3 Mooring Buoys (North, Middle and South Victory Reef)

Located close to Tuna Alley, the Victory Reef is a five-mile stretch that runs along the edge of the Gulf stream. There are several fantastic dive spots with cliffs, swim-throughs, and caves and the known spots are Rainbow Valley, Cathedral, and the Sponge Gardens. On the reef, you can spot sea turtles, sharks, rays, tangs, parrot-, angel-, and spadefish .

When waters are calm, visibility can reach over 100 feet . When the Gulf Stream is ripping, it makes better conditions for a drift dive.

Average Depth : 15 ft. / 5 m Max Depth : 20 ft. / 6 m

  • Artificial Reef
  • Good Snorkeling

Built back in 1911, today, the Sapona is very popular with beginner wreck divers and snorkelers with a large part of the ship remaining above water. The bow with orange cup corals is the easiest part of the shipt to penetrate safely. The 270-foot Sapona is now home to a good deal of marine life – you can see trigger fish, grunts and large lobsters.

bimini dive trips

Bimini Barge

Average Depth : 75 ft. / 23 m Max Depth : 100 ft. / 30 m

The 120-foot Bimini Barge sunk in the late 1980s just on the edge of the continental shelf.

You can reach the top of the barge at 65 feet and the visibility there is fantastic.

The vessel is completely overgrown with corals and sponges making it a perfect home for groupers, jacks, barracudas and sharks. Also, this includes fire coral so be careful when penetrating the wreck.

Side trip: CocoCay

Royal Caribbean International purchased Little Stirrup Cay, renamed it CocoCay, and built a secluded island paradise for its cruise passengers to enjoy. The construction was completed in adherence to strict environmental regulations and Bahamian codes.

A perfect cruise ship destination

CocoCay is located on the northern end of the Berry Islands chain near Great Harbour Cay. The 140-acre island offers beautiful, white, sandy beaches with hundreds of lounge chairs. A large number of hammocks are scattered about the island. And, since this is a cruise ship destination, there are several bars as well as waiters walking among the chairs taking your drink orders.

If you prefer action to relaxing and imbibing rum, there are several activities available for fees.

Adults and children will enjoy the Aqua Park of floating trampolines, slides, and climbing walls. Wave runners, kayaks, parasails and small sailboats are available to rent. Although CocoCay is not an inhabited island, Royal Caribbean and its sister cruise line, Celebrity, have set-up a small straw market where visitors can purchase traditional Bahamian goods and have their hair braided.

Equipment rental and dive spots

The Snorkel Shack rents equipment and offers instruction. Scuba equipment may be rented by certified divers who can show a dive log with a dive within the last two years. The Scuba trip is no deeper than 40 feet. For snorkelers, a short swim from the beach takes you to several well-marked spots. A red buoy marks a replica of a Spanish galleon shipwreck complete with cannons. A short swim away towards the lifeguard platform is the wreckage of a small airplane. A cluster of six reef balls have been placed close to the plane and single reef balls are scattered around the lagoon.

The fish are plentiful at both the shipwreck and plane thanks to a “fish-feeding” put on by cruise employees. Even if you miss the fish feeding, the fish will swim right up to you to check for food. Expect to see schools of yellowtail snapper, mangrove snapper, and sergeant majors. Flounder, parrotfish, and mackerel hang out near the plane wreck.

Great Hammerhead Shark Diving @ Bimini

Great hammerhead shark diving.

Bimini offers one of the best opportunities in the world for great hammerhead shark diving. During the winter months January – April, a healthy population of theses elusive sharks congregate around the island’s waters. With numerous species of shark frequenting this area, you have opportunities to see Caribbean Reef Sharks, Nurse Sharks, Bull Sharks, and, of course, Great Hammerheads. Thanks to the foresight of the Bahamas, making all waters surrounding the nations islands a marine sanctuary, we are able to enjoy the benefits of a healthy marine ecosystem.

Besides great hammerhead shark dives, Bimini also offers a variety of other great diving, including several wrecks, and a great location to dive with stingrays.

During the Great Hammerhead Shark Diving Expedition in Bimini, don’t miss out on some incredible wild dolphin excursions. Check out this amazing video from just one morning with the dolphin and contact us for more details.

Great hammerhead sharks in Bimini, Bahamas.

This group of islands lie just 80 kilometres east of Miami, North and South Bimini being the largest and most visited. The islands are located on the northwest edge of the Great Bahamas Bank, a warm, shallow body of water over a sandy sea floor.  The islands feature an intricate mangrove system which is an important nursery ground for juvenile marine species.

In stark contrast, immediately to the west of the island chain is the Gulf Stream, a deep ocean trench with fast flowing, nutrient rich waters and an abundance of pelagic species who choose whether or not they decide to visit the area, allowing for exciting underwater encounters.

The special charm of the islands extends to the crowd free beaches, where resorts are few and far between. Underwater highlights include the Sapona wreck, the ‘Road to Atlantis’ and the ‘Bull Run’ with its guaranteed shark sightings. The season is short, but shark enthusiasts won't want to miss our great hammerhead encounters trip offered from here, where you can spend four days diving with hammerhead sharks, getting up close and personal with these inquisitive creatures.

South Bimini is home to the world famous Bimini Biological Field Station which primarily focuses on research but also encourages conservation and protection of the local natural ecosystem. Known locally as ‘Sharklab’ the organisation works hard on educating the public on the vital role of sharks, in particular the lemon, but also works with spotted eagle rays and southern stingrays. The waters around Bimini are home to nurse, tiger, black-tip, Caribbean reef, bull, great hammerhead, blacknose and Atlantic sharks.

Located in the north west region of the Bahamas and just 50 miles / 80 km east of Miami, USA, Bimini has earned itself a reputation among scuba divers as one of the shark capitals of the Caribbean , if not the entire world. It is made of 2 principal but small islands - North and South Bimini - along with a string of smaller cays. But it is its unique position, on the edge of the Grand Bahama Bank overlooking the deep water Gulf Stream that flows in to the Atlantic Ocean, that is so attractive to a range of oceanic shark species and that makes scuba diving in Bimini so remarkable.

A great hammerhead shark with divers in Bimini

In the gin clear waters of Bimini divers can find nurse, tiger, blacktip, Caribbean reef, bull, and blacknose sharks. The islands’ mangrove system is an important nursery ground for their juveniles. But it is for its reliable great hammerhead shark (Sphyrna mokarran) encounters that Bimini has become world famous. These elusive and extraordinary creatures can grow up to 20 ft / 6m, are endangered (IUCN Red List) and hard to find anywhere else in the world. However, they congregate in the shallow waters of South Bimini in large numbers from December to March. The hammerheads are inquisitive and approach quite close so don’t forget to take your camera!

Elsewhere, Bimini has a great diversity of dive sites that are suitable for all levels of experience - coral reefs, walls, shipwrecks, the continental shelf, blue holes and caverns that are home to an abundance of fish, rays, sharks, turtles and playful dolphins; it is one of the Bahamas’ most spectacular liveaboard destinations . There are more than 20 marked sites.

Dive Site Descriptions

Bimini reefs.

One of the best dive areas is the series of sites along the strip of wall that runs along the cays, south of Cat Cay. The topography is amazing with plenty of overhangs, caverns and swim-throughs. If you pause the search on the healthy reefs at sites such as Victory Reef and Tuna Alley , you will find a huge variety of critters, but the area is also home to turtles, reef sharks, and frequented by hammerheads, wahoo, mahi mahi, and bluefin tuna which migrate from March to May. A typical profile is a sloped bank of sponges and corals from 50-120 ft / 15-35m, followed by a step and a further slope in to the abyss. Show more

Turtle Rocks are a series of 3 rock formations running from north to south that break the waterline and separate the Grand Bahama Bank from the Southern Atlantic Ocean. You can dive either side of the rocks as the maximum depth is only 30 ft / 10m. But the area attracts spotted eagle rays, Caribbean reef sharks, nurse sharks, as well as sweetlips, angelfish and parrotfish. Rainbow Reef is made up of a series of shallow ledges that are ideal for less-experienced divers. It is located within a protected marine sanctuary and the reef health and light penetration projects a kaleidoscope of colour. Typically you will spot schools of French grunts, Creole wrasse, nurse sharks and turtles, as well as countless other small fish species.

Located near Bimini Big Game Club, Bull Run is another famous and much-loved Bimini dive site. Some operators only offer this site as a cage diving experience. This is because of the guarantee of sharks. Blacktips are almost ever-present and it is not unusual to come across nurse and lemon sharks. However, it is the possible appearance of bull sharks (most common from December through March) that excites some scuba divers and encourages others to seek security in cages! These predators can grow up to 11 ft / 3.5m. They are potentially aggressive and known to be a danger to humans due to their preference for shallow water, even being found in fresh water rivers.

Here the topography consists of 3 pinnacles around a sandy floor. There are also big swim-throughs and beautiful coral caverns worth exploring, which cannot be done if you are in a cage. There are also innumerable juvenile fish species to spot at this site.

Bimini Wrecks

Wreck divers can enjoy Bimini too. The Sapona is a famous wreck, built in 1911 by Henry Ford, which lies off the coast of South Bimini. Divers delight in the marine life that festoons and thrives where the wreck lies beneath the surface. This 270 ft / 80m cement transport vessel was used during World War I before apparently being re-purposed as an illegal gambling and liquor club during the US prohibition. It then ran aground at Turtle Rocks in a hurricane in the late 1920s. Now you can drink in the sights and bet you will see plenty of amazing marine life on this shallow wreck dive which has a maximum depth of only 6m/ 20 ft. Much of the structure stands in a badly eroded state above the water. Show more

Underwater, the hull is heavily encrusted with invertebrates. Hunt around the nooks and crannies of the wreck for blackbar soldierfish, gobies, morays, chromis and angelfish and look out for the orange cup corals in the bow. Larger fish that frequent the ship’s hull include groupers, chubs, sweetlips (also known as grunts or porkfish), mackerel and even turtles. Sometimes you can find nurse sharks resting under the stern. On night dives you can run into squid, octopus, meaty lobsters and many other crustaceans. Due to the shallow nature of the wreck and the calm waters, this site is ideal for underwater photographers and snorkellers as well. Another of the premier but challenging dives here is the Bimini Barge , a wreck of over 200 ft / 60m in length. It rests upright on a sandy bottom at 95 ft / 29m, almost on the very edge of the Atlantic Gulf Stream. Due to its location, currents are variable and can be strong, bringing in pelagic fish and passing sharks. The wreck is often engulfed in fish and nurse sharks and southern stingrays often rest under or near the hull. Another wreck is known as The Bimini Trader - a 90 ft / 27m long freight vessel that sank during Hurricane Andrew in 1992.

The Continental Shelf

The Continental Shelf is a hard to resist allure for experienced scuba divers in Bimini. It is the signature deep dive along the edge of the Gulf Stream, an opportunity to gaze in to the rushing depths of the Atlantic. The dive takes place along the top of a wall at 140 feet / 40m, from where the wall drops hundreds of feet into the deep. The strong currents and exposed nature of the shelf mean that just about anything could turn up.

Atlantis Road

Perhaps one of Bimini’s most unique dives is Atlantis Road (a.k.a. Bimini Road). The name is a play on the legend of Lost City of Atlantis, as the site is a long parallel formation of weathered rocks, which resemble the neatly cut blocks of a road. Geologists would say that the blocks are beach rock and caused by an old shoreline drying and cracking. Needless to say others with more fertile imaginations have countered that there is evidence that there are a further series of blocks underneath the exposed rocks, pointing to the theory that the site is an old breakwater or harbour. You can make up your own mind. One thing is for sure - it is now a popular diving and snorkelling spot as it lies at a maximum depth of 20 ft / 6m and pods of Atlantic spotted dolphins frequent the area.

How to Dive Bimini

Discover our Bimini liveaboard adventure opportunities

The Bahamas are an island chain spread over a large area and technically located in the North Atlantic although many consider it a Caribbean nation. The Biminis lie on the edge of the fast-flowing Gulf Stream – the current that dumps warm water from the Gulf of Mexico in to the Atlantic Ocean. Since the nation territory is mainly water it will come as no surprise that a liveaboard trip is the best way to visit the country and Bimini.

Diving cruises that include Bimini in their itinerary are 7-10 nights ‘Grand Bahama and Bimini’ trips (visiting Tiger Beach), or spectacular 14 night ‘The Bahamas’ expeditions across all the top dive destinations of the country – Nassau, Berry Islands, Andros, the Exumas, Cat Island, Eleuthera, Abaco, Grand Bahama, and the Biminis. All of these tours depart from Freeport in Grand Bahama. There is an international airport at Freeport (FPO). The islands do have a local airport (South Bimini Airport - code BIM) with direct flights from the international airports in Freeport and Nassau (NAS).

The Diving Season

The best time for diving with sharks is during the cooler winter months. Great hammerhead season is January to March. Bull sharks are more frequently seen from December to March, and tunas migrate through the area from March to May. Atlantic spotted and bottlenose dolphins are best seen in the summer months. Late January and early February is the time of year for Nassau grouper spawning .

How to Plan the Perfect Trip to Bimini in the Bahamas

Bimini has epic scuba diving, luxury beachfront hotels, and delicious seafood — and it’s just 50 miles from Florida

Best Hotels and Resorts

Best things to do, best restaurants, best time to visit, how to get there, how to get around.

The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism

Located just 50 miles off the coast of Florida, Bimini is a collection of cays and islands in the Bahamas that offer a mix of adventure and rest. Cerulean waters house bygone shipwrecks, bonefish flats, and a coral reef system teeming with wildlife and tropical currents, making it one of the most attractive diving and fishing spots in the region. “I’ve spent most of my life exploring Bimini’s beautiful waters. The thrill of being out on the shallow, sandy flats and reeling in the catch will never get old,” said Ansil Saunders, a renowned native boat builder and bone fisherman, as well as a local legend who once went boating with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during his visit to the island.

The main tourist areas of North and South Bimini are separated by a narrow ocean passageway, with ferries connecting the two islands. Alice Town, located on the larger North Bimini, hosts the island’s major tourist attractions and hotels, including the 750-acre luxury beachfront property Resorts World Bimini . “Bimini is also rich in history, and there are many local gems worth exploring. The island was home to famous figures like Ernest Hemingway and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and you can learn all about its past from local historians like Ashley Saunders, a local artist who spent more than 25 years constructing the Dolphin House Museum entirely out of found objects and recycled materials,” said Grace Giste, officer of the Bimini Tourist Office, The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, Investments, and Aviation. Whether you choose to fish for yellowtail or snapper, dive off historic shipwrecks, or try your luck at a casino, there are plenty of options on this small yet mighty island. Here's how to plan an unforgettable trip to Bimini.

Top 5 Can’t Miss

  • Made from salvaged and recycled materials, the dolphin- and ocean-inspired Dolphin House Museum was created by artist and historian Ashley Saunders, who offers daily walking tours of the colorful space.
  • With a prime oceanfront location, Resorts World Bimini has 305 rooms and a popular casino to try your luck.
  • Enjoy fresh conch prepared a number of ways at Stuart’s Conch Salad Stand, an open-air, well-loved seafood shop in Bailey Town.
  • Get up close and personal with all the marine life Bimini has to offer, thanks to a number of excursions available at Neal Watson’s Bimini Scuba Center .
  • Pair your cocktail with enviable ocean views at Ebbie and Pat's Bar & Grill , situated directly on the water.

Resorts World Bimini

For a prime location with plenty to do, check into the expansive Resorts World Bimini . The 750-acre luxury beachfront property spans approximately half the island and features miles of white-sand beaches, three pools, 10 restaurants, and a world-class casino. All accommodations come with balconies, some with ocean views.

Bimini Big Game Club Resort & Marina

Situated in the tourist-friendly center of Alice Town, Bimini Big Game Club Resort & Marina is a boutique hotel that first opened in 1947. The 51 accommodations here range from deluxe rooms and cottages to penthouses, and the property is also home to Bimini Seafood Company & Conch Bar, Neal Watson’s Bimini Scuba Center, and a full-service marina, which boasts 75 slips that can accommodate boats up to 140 feet.

Visit Dolphin House Museum.

Step into a prismatic world constructed of recycled and salvaged materials and created by artist and historian Ashley Saunders, a fifth-generation local. Built in 1937, the Dolphin House Museum is a popular attraction for daily walking tours. Conch shells, sea glass, and other materials make the structure glow with detail, each piece serving as an homage to the dolphins that have inspired Saunders’ life.

Explore Neal Watson’s Bimini Scuba Center.

As the first dive operation in Bimini, Neal Watson’s Bimini Scuba Center employs several dive boats, including a 60-foot glass-bottom vessel that can accommodate divers, snorkelers, and sightseers. In addition to diving and snorkeling, the center offers great hammerhead and wild dolphin safaris. It's also a member of the Reef Rescue Network, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the condition of coral reefs. Popular activities to book include a half-day snorkel tour that makes stops at the crystalline Honeymoon Harbour and SS Sapona shipwreck .

Relax at Radio Beach.

A popular spot for both visitors and residents, Alice Town’s Radio Beach offers some of the island’s most beautiful sunsets and sapphire waters. It’s also the only beach in Bimini that has public facilities such as vendors and toilets. “If you're looking to indulge in local food and drinks, Radio Beach is a great place to start. It's lined with Bahamian restaurants and bars, where you can try local favorites like conch salad, fresh seafood, and island-inspired cocktails, according to Giste.

Hit the casino at Resorts World Bimini.

Whether you’re a high roller or a low-stakes gambler, the 10,000-square-foot, live-action casino at Resorts World Bimini features popular table games and more than 160 slot machines. Plus, you’ll be mere steps away from a number of restaurants.

Bimini Seafood Company & Conch Bar

Located in the Bimini Big Game Club Resort & Marina, this restaurant offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner in a marina setting overlooking the island’s famous bonefish flats. Dishes include both American and Bahamian cuisine, with house favorites such as coconut curry shrimp and grilled ribs.

Smitty's Beach Bar & Restaurant

Enjoy beach views and a lively atmosphere at this casual outdoor restaurant. You’ll be able to enjoy a number of Bahamian classics, including conch, of course, alongside diners belting karaoke tunes.

Nate’s Bimini Bread

A family institution and popular bakery, Nate's Bimini Bread is the place to go for outstanding mounds of coconut rolls, guava and cream cheese loaves, and cinnamon raisin buns, all baked fresh every morning.

Stuart’s Conch Salad Stand

Enjoy fresh conch and lobster salad alongside a house-made hot sauce — if you can stand the heat — at this renowned stand , which has been in business for more than 20 years. Try a bowl of the roughly chopped conch, elevated with citrus juice, onions, tomatoes, and green peppers.

Though temperatures in the Bahamas are warm and pleasant year-round, the most popular time to visit Bimini for temperate, dry weather is mid-December to mid-April. This time of year brings more crowds, though, typically resulting in higher hotel prices. Visitors should also be mindful of hurricane season, which falls between June and November.

Bimini is about 50 miles east of Florida. The most affordable option is to take the two-hour Balearia ferry from Fort Lauderdale, which offers charters three days a week. There's also a high-speed FRS Caribbean ferry that departs from Miami for a two-hour ride to Bimini. To arrive via air, take a 25-minute flight on Tropic Ocean Airways from Fort Lauderdale or Miami.

Jeremy J Saunders/Getty Images

If arriving by plane, you’ll land at South Bimini Airport. Most visitors stay on north side of the island. To get there, flag a taxi at the airport; it's a five-minute ride to the South Bimini ferry dock ($5 per person). Then, take the public ferry to North Bimini ($8 per person). Note that most vendors throughout the Bahamas only accept cash.

Once on Bimini, travelers can arrange a golf cart rental, which is the main mode of transportation on the island. Book one starting at $90 per day with Bimini Golf Cart Rentals . Meanwhile, guests staying at Resorts World Bimini can reserve a golf cart provided only to hotel guests. There are no car rentals on Bimini, and many places are accessible via walking.

Snorkeling and Freediving with Atlantic Spotted Dolphins in Bimini - Dive Ninja Expeditions

The Expedition

Get ready for a very special adventure! There are two species of dolphins that inhabit the beautiful waters of Bimini – the Atlantic Spotted Dolphin, and the Bottlenose Dolphin, with excellent chances of encountering both species.  T he pods here share a very unique behavior that is only seen in a few places on earth.  They actually seek out interactions with humans.  You’ll feel like you’re living in a wildlife documentary, as we head out each day to swim with wild dolphins and explore their world.

For this special trip we’ll be sending our very own Jay Clue, award winning underwater photographer & conservationist, to show you the best of Bimini. Jay will be teaming up with environmental scientist Kelly Melillo Sweeting, that has been working with the dolphins in Bimini for over 18 years! She will be joining us throughout the week to teach us a bit about these incredible creatures as well as the amazing research she has been working on with the dolphins in Bimini.

Our expedition will begin in Bimini, the Bahamas.  We’ll have a relaxing first day for all guests to arrive, check in, and chill out. Then a presentation by Jay Clue & the team in the evening  introducing us to these amazing creatures and what’s in store for the week . The next day, we’ll head out on our first dolphin expedition after lunch, looking for those amazing encounters!  This will be repeated for the next few days, with a total of 4 afternoons in the water with dolphins, so you can get as much time as possible with our new underwater friends.

Dolphins are most active in the afternoon, so our dolphin expedition will make the most of this.  But not to worry, we also have morning activities planned! There will be a morning of snorkeling & freediving with Caribbean reef sharks, and another morning of snorkeling & freediving at a local wreck & reef before heading out in search of more dolphin action.  There will also be talks and presentations throughout the week led by Kelly & Jay Clue! As well as the option to take photo workshops to bring home some awesome memories.  Alternatively, you may choose to take the morning off to explore the beautiful local beaches, or relax by the pool.

While out on the ocean we’ll also be looking for the numerous other species that call this area home such as eagle rays, multiple species of sharks, and many more.

Accommodation & Operations

For this exclusive trip we have teamed up with our good friend Neal Watson of Bimini Scuba Center for our local operations coordinator. Neal runs one of the most world renown shark diving ops in the world and is considered one of the leading experts on diving in the Bahamas. When documentary makers need to shoot footage in the Bahamas this is the team they go to. They’ve done work with BBC, National Geographic, Discovery, Animal Planet, and the list goes on and on. But it’s not only their vast local knowledge and fame that makes them incredible – they actively help support local marine research and conservation projects fighting to protect this special area.  For our accommodations we will be staying at the Bimini Big Game Club Resort & Marina. The hotel is a Bimini icon founded in the 1930s and is only a few short steps to the boat. It boasts 2 restaurants onsite, a swimming pool, game room, hammocks, free to use kayaks, SUP, & bicycles, and more. Standard rooms come in either 2 queen beds or 1 king bed configurations and have all the comforts of home – air conditioning, wifi, TV, phones, and balconies. Upgrades are also available for single supplements, cottages, or penthouses.

diving with dolphins in Bimini

What’s The Cost?

A portion of the proceeds from these expeditions are being donated to help fund Kel’s dolphin research efforts! This is a special limited offer series of expeditions. The expedition is 5 nights/6 days long with a maximum capacity of 12 guests.  The expedition package price is $1850 USD. All prices are per person and on shared double occupancy basis. If you are traveling solo, no problem! We will match you with another solo ninja guest of the same gender. Or if you prefer your own private room a single supplement upgrade is also available for an additional fee of $700. There is also an option to upgrade to to a cottage or penthouse.

What’s Included

The trip price includes 4 days of in-water activities including 4 dolphin trips, 1 shark tour, and 1 reef/wreck tour, presentations throughout the week, 5 nights hotel accommodation on a shared double occupancy basis, a donation in your honor, drinks onboard the boat, and all marine park fees.

What’s Not Included

The price does not include flights, transfers from/to airport to/from hotel ($10 one way), rental equipment, Crew Gratuity (10%-15% of trip price is customary but is at your discretion), and any meals or drinks not mentioned above.

Anything Else?

Please note that this expedition is not scuba diving based. All the action takes place at the surface and in shallow water that is crystal clear and 5-7m (15-20ft) deep on average so there is no need for scuba equipment. Plus we have learned through experience that the encounters and interactions with the dolphins are much more intimate and hundreds times better without scuba gear. Additionally, to better preserve the natural behaviors of these animals it is best done as a soft interaction without bubbles and heavy equipment. You do not need to be scuba certified or freediving certified to join these expeditions, but you do need to know how to swim and be comfortable swimming in the ocean. There are options to add-on scuba diving days if you’d like though. Please contact our team for more info.

Supporting Dolphin Conservation

Dolphins being held captive for the entertainment of humans is an issue very close to our hearts at Dive Ninjas. ‘ Wild cetaceans (whales and dolphins) travel 40-100 miles a day , achieve speeds of 30 miles per hour , and dive hundreds of feet deep. Even in the largest facilities, they have less than 0.0001% (one millionth) of their natural habitat range ( Reference here ). And that is only the beginning of the problem. But organizations around the world such as Empty The Tanks & Ric O’Barry’s Dolphin Project are working tirelessly to educate the public about captivity through outreach and awareness campaigns that aim to put an end to cetacean captivity, exploitation, as well as where feasible, retire and/or release captive dolphins. The track record of remarkable feats these 2 organizations have accomplished is awe-inspiring. Dive Ninjas is proud to not only be an Empty The Tanks ‘ Ally for Dolphins ‘ partner dive center , but was the first in the entire west coast of North America. We hope that our stance on the issue would help inspire other businesses to take the pledge and get involved. Join Team Ninja as we show the world that you can experience swimming with dolphins without keeping them in captivity and exploiting them for human entertainment. And let’s help these great organizations put an end to dolphin and whale captivity so these remarkable creatures can live wild and free where they belong.

Flights & Pre-Trip Activities Information

Our base for this expedition will be our host hotel Bimini Big Game Club Resort & Marina located in the heart of North Bimini. The nearest airport is South Bimini Airport (airport code BIM). Easy (and cheap) flights can be found from Fort Lauderdale and Miami Florida. The flight time is about 30 minutes door to door.  There is also an option to take a ferry over from Port Everglades Fort Lauderdale – which is even cheaper, but adds a couple hours to the travel time.  And another option to take a seaplane to the North Bimini Seaplane airport (airport code NSB). Transferring to the hotel from the airport is quick and easy. On arrival there will be a mini bus taxi outside asking who needs a ride to the ferry. It costs about $10 per person and takes less than 5 minutes to get to the ferry dock then 5 minutes on the ferry crossing to the Bimini Big Game Club. Just let the ferry or taxi driver know you would like to be dropped off at Bimini Big Game. The ferries run all day, every few minutes, and you do not need to prebook the  ferry or taxi.

We will meet in the lobby of the hotel at 4pm for registration. If you will be arriving early the hotel can hold your bags and give you WiFi access. You’re welcome to use the facilities while waiting. If you’d like to arrive early/leave later and add on some extra dive days our team can set it up for you. Just give our reservation ninjas a shout.

Scuba diving the Bimini road

Made the dive on August 22nd through the Big Game Club. This is the best shallow water dive I have made anywhere so far. The marine life is abundant, fish, eels, lobsters, coral and more. It is also the most colorful of dive spots I have tried in Bimini. The stones look like giant charcoal briquettes, which look like a road from above. When down close & personal they still make you wonder what they really are. Definitely looks man made and very old. Lobsters like to hide underneath them as well as fish & eels. Lionfish also, like to hang out under the ledges by the bottom so be cautious when getting close to take a look. The dive is less that 20’ so you can stay down a long time. Of all the shallow dives made in Bimini this one in my opinion was the best.

bimini dive trips

just beautiful, more special each and every time I am there! I look forward to my next adventure on the road

The energy was so special and filled with ancient wonder.

It was a self guided dive because it was very shallow.

The day we snorkeled over Bimini Road was nice, the water and visibility - excellent. And lots of marine life only added to the thrill of swimming in the place that may be one of the biggest mysteries in the world.

Snorkling over the Bimini Road was fun half hour stop along the way to the dolphin encounter. Easy snorkeling, with 10-12 foot dives to the bottom to look for lobster and fish under the ledges, and saw a sea turtle swimming away.
