Carnival Cruise Line Kicking Off 2023 With Times Square and Fleetwide New Year’s Eve Celebrations

Carnival is unveiling a new campaign for 2023, Choose Fun Together

MIAMI, Dec. 23, 2022 – Carnival Cruise Line will usher in 2023 on land and at sea as Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy will light the famous New Year’s Eve Ball in New York’s Times Square, and nearly 100,000 guests sailing on Carnival’s 24 ships will join in the celebration to welcome in the new year.

Carnival will once again bring its signature, high-energy fun to New York City by joining one of the most iconic events in the world as the official cruise line sponsor of Times Square New Year’s Eve and serve as a musical sponsor and countdown clock sponsor for “Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest” on ABC.

Duffy will be on hand, along with Carnival partner and renowned chef Emeril Lagasse, to flip the giant switch that will light the famous New Year’s Eve Ball and invite everyone celebrating in New York and watching from home to “Choose Fun Together,” which is also the theme of Carnival’s 2023 advertising campaign that can be seen throughout Times Square. Guests across Carnival’s fleet will have their own fun – in much warmer conditions – as they also celebrate the new year by getting a head start on choosing fun together with family and friends.

“As we head into 2023, we have even more reasons to celebrate and so it’s appropriate that America’s cruise line be part of America’s most iconic New Year’s celebration. We’ve got two new ships joining the fleet next year, including the start of year-round service from New York in June on Carnival Venezia , which will offer our upcoming Carnival Fun Italian Style experience, and then we’ll end the year with Carnival Jubilee arriving in Galveston. We’re looking forward to continuing this exciting period of growth and building on the success of the past year,” said Duffy.

Leading up to the midnight countdown, Duffy will join the Times Square New Year's Eve host on the Countdown Stage during the 10 p.m. hour to share details about what guests sailing from New York can expect on the stunning Carnival Venezia, which will homeport at the Manhattan Cruise Terminal just a few blocks from Times Square and offer a wide range of sailing options.

Carnival Debuting ‘Choose Fun Together’ Campaign for New Year

Setting a tone of togetherness in the new year, Times Square’s massive billboards will showcase the new Carnival campaign Choose Fun Together. The campaign underscores Carnival’s appeal across any age group by showcasing various ways guests can Choose Fun, and find something of interest to everyone, whether sailing with family or a group of friends . The new ads highlight those special moments of fun that can only happen when people come together on a Carnival cruise – because we are our most fun selves when we choose fun, together.

After first debuting the campaign on Christmas Day, the New Year’s Eve integration will serve as the Choose Fun Together message’s largest national launching point. The new campaign will continue to be seen across both Carnival-owned channels and advertising placements throughout 2023 – from social media posts on TikTok and Instagram to commercial spots on national streaming and broadcast television. to all other media placements like audio, outdoor, paid social and additional digital extensions. (To see a sample of some of the new commercials, click here and here .)

The Choose Fun Together campaign’s launch coincides with the cruise industry’s 2023 wave season, which is the annual kick-off to cruise planning for millions of Americans and travel advisors. The campaign, created by Anomaly, is an extension of the brand’s Choose Fun campaign that launched in 2018. All paid media and integration elements were created by Initiative.

Carnival Corporation’s Orderbook Could Include a Second Ship for 2028

  • April 1, 2024

Carnival Jubilee

According to President and CEO Josh Weinstein, Carnival Corporation is maintaining its strategy of acquiring one or two new cruise ships per year.

The company recently placed orders for two ships at the Meyer Werft Shipyard in Germany. The first ship is scheduled for delivery in 2027, while the second is expected to enter service in 2028 .

Speaking on the company’s first quarter 2024 earnings call on Wednesday, Weinstein stated that the company doesn’t plan to order a second ship for 2027 but is still evaluating a second ship order for 2028.

“We’re talking about one to two ships a year starting in 2027. There won’t be another one in 2027. That will be what we’ve got,” he said.

“As far as 2028 goes, could there be another one? It’s not closed, but I wouldn’t necessarily bank on it either,” Weinstein continued.

Both new orders are for Excel Class ships, which are set to be operated by the Carnival Cruise Line brand.

“We are working on more things that are going to be geared toward our highest returning brands as we’ve been talking about. And when there’s something to talk about, we’ll certainly share it,” he concluded.

Carnival Corporation saw record first quarter revenues of $5.4 billion, the company announced on Wednesday .

According to Weinstein, this milestone was reached as a result of the company’s broader efforts to increase demand and expand its customer base , which included investments in its highest returning brands.

In addition to building new ships for Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises and Cunard, the investments also include a fleet modernization program for AIDA Cruises and the development of a new private island in the Bahamas.

Located on Grand Bahama island, Celebration Key will also be utilized by the Carnival Cruise Line brand and will be featured in the itineraries of 18 ships departing from 10 homeports.

Carnival cruise line warns of up to $10 million profit hit from baltimore bridge collapse.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Carnival warned that its 2024 earnings could take up to a $10 million hit as a result of the Baltimore bridge collapse, which has halted the cruise line’s ability to access its Maryland port.

Carnival chief Josh Weinstein told investors during the company’s first-quarter earnings call on Wednesday that its ships will temporarily dock in Norfolk, Va., “which should help to minimize operational changes,” The Wall Street Journal earlier reported.

The Carnival Legend ship set sail Sunday for a seven-day Bahamas cruise — two days before the Francis Scott Key Bridge crumbled when it was hit by a container ship around 1:30 a.m. ET Tuesday in what was quickly declared a mass-casualty event.

Instead of returning to Baltimore this weekend, Carnival Legend will end its trip in Norfolk, “and guests will be provided complimentary bus service back to Baltimore,” the company said in a press release.

The next seven-day voyage, scheduled for March 31, will also operate out of Carnival’s Virginia port.

“Guests on the current and upcoming cruises are being informed of this change,” Carnival said.

Despite expecting an eight-figure disruption to its annual adjusted earnings as a result of this diversion, Carnival has yet to factored the $10 million hit into its full-year adjusted profit guidance, which it raised marginally to $5.63 billion for 2024.

Previously, Carnival anticipated raking in about $5.6 billion in adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization, while analysts had estimated $5.64 billion.

Josh Weinstein, President and CEO of Carnival Corporation, speaking at the Milken Institute Global Conference in Beverly Hills, California

In a news release issued by Maryland Gov. Wes Moore last month, the Port of Baltimore was celebrated as “the best port in the nation” and one of Maryland’s largest economic generators.

In 2023, more than 444,000 cruised out of the port, which generates some 15,300 direct jobs and nearly 140,000 roles linked to port activities, Moore said.

The cruise business has been on the rise post-pandemic.

In the past year alone, Carnival’s stock has run up more than 95%.

The Miami-based cruise operator also reported on Wednesday that its revenues for the first quarter of 2024 surged 22% to a record $5.4 billion.

Weinstein said the company is succeeding in lifting its prices to customers without hurting demand, per The Journal.

He added that customers have also booked more in advance this year than they historically have, boosting Carnival’s confidence that it can max out its ships’ capacities this summer without last-minute discounts.

“Because our assets (our ships) are mobile, we can be very nimble and our team moved quickly to secure a temporary homeport in Norfolk for as long as it is needed,” a Carnival spokesperson told The Post. “We will continue to actively monitor the situation and look forward to getting back to Baltimore as soon as possible.”

Royal Caribbean — which has its own itinerary scheduled return to Baltimore from the Caribbean on April 4 — is close to erasing its pandemic losses, according to The Journal, and boasts 40% more pre-cruise revenue booked as of March 2024 than in the same period of 2023.

However, the cruise line has yet to comment on how the Key Bridge’s collapse could impact that momentum.

Royal Caribbean has only advised that its “closely monitoring the situation” ahead of April 4, when Vision of the Seas is returning to Baltimore from its 12-night Caribbean voyage.

“Our port logistics team is currently working on alternatives for Vision of the Seas’ ongoing and upcoming sailing,” added Royal Caribbean, which has another trip slated to set sail from Baltimore on April 12.

Drunk Man Jumps Off Royal Caribbean Cruise Ship in Front of Horrified Family Members

The Arena Media Brands, LLC and respective content providers to this website may receive compensation for some links to products and services on this website.

A luxurious Caribbean cruise suddenly took a nightmarish turn late Thursday night on the Royal Caribbean ship Liberty of the Seas. Shortly after 4 am on April 4, US Coast Guard teams were summoned to help Liberty of the Seas with an emergency search and rescue after a guest went overboard. According to eyewitnesses, the victim did not fall accidentally, but jumped overboard in a seemingly spur-of-the-moment decision - right in front of his horrified family.

Though the victim's identity has not been publicly shared, New York Post described him as a 20-year-old man, accompanied by his brother and father at the time of the accident. The Royal Caribbean ship was sailing between Cuba and Grand Inagua Island in the Bahamas when the 20-year-old suddenly, inexplicably, jumped overboard.

Related: Family of Passengers Left Behind by Norwegian Cruise Ship Are Outraged

Eyewitness Bryan Sims, who had hung out with the victim moments before, described the incident to The Post as "insane" and "surreal. "

"I had hung out with him and his brother in the hot tub until 3:30... he was pretty drunk," said Sims. As they departed the hot tub , Sims said the man's brother and dad approached them, his dad "fussing at him for being drunk."

"When we got to them, he said to his dad, 'I'll fix this right now.' And he jumped out the window in front of us all," Sims told The Post .

There was instant pandemonium as the ship's crew immediately commenced search and rescue efforts. The US Coast Guard also arrived on the scene, and according to Royal Caribbean , they have since taken over the search.

Though there haven't been any promising updates yet, a spokesperson for the Coast Guard told the Daily Mail this morning that they still consider their mission a rescue operation . For the sake of the man, his horrified family, and the traumatized witnesses that night, we hope that the mission will be a successful one.

Going Overboard on a Cruise Ship

Going overboard on a cruise ship is rare. Modern cruise ships are equipped with preventative features like high railings that make simply "falling" overboard nigh-impossible without standing on furniture or climbing the railings. Sadly, when passengers do go overboard, it's often (though not always) intentional - be it a suicide attempt, a drunken dare, or, as in the case of the incident on Liberty of the Seas, an inexplicable impulse decision.

Tragically, even when the crew immediately begins search and rescue efforts, the victim's likelihood of survival is not good. According to statistics from Cruise Lines International Association, there were 212 overboard incidents between 2009-2019; an average of about 19 incidents per year. Of these, only 48, or 28.2%, resulted in a successful rescue. Time and tide are literally working against rescuers, and it's incredibly difficult to spot a single person in a vast sea, especially at night, which is often when these incidents happen.

Luckily, there is hope. According to Business Insider , of nine overboard incident victims in 2023, two were rescued - and both were Royal Caribbean passengers. The odds are not good, but that doesn't mean that everyone on the ship (including guests, who will often search from their own balconies as well) doesn't do their utmost to locate them in time. Against the odds, we hold out hope that luck will prevail in this story, too.

Cars for sale

Sell my car, car research, sign in, 10 new cars under $50,000 with adaptive cruise control, the continuing democratization of tech means you can find adaptive cruise control on more vehicles than ever..

Article QuickTakes:

  • Hyundai Sonata  |  Audi A4
  • Acura Integra  |  Toyota Corolla Hatchback
  • Subaru Forester  | Mazda CX-30
  • Kia Carnival  | Honda Ridgeline
  • BMW 2 Series  |  Volkswagen ID.4

Once a feature exclusive to high-end luxury models, adaptive cruise control has trickled down into a wide assortment of vehicles and has become a must-have feature for many car shoppers. Like regular cruise control, it will keep the vehicle at a set speed; unlike regular cruise control, adaptive cruise control will tell the vehicle to brake as it comes up behind another and will correspondingly follow at a safe distance. Moreover, should you find yourself facing an open lane again, the system will tell the car to accelerate back up to the desired speed without your involvement.

All adaptive cruise control systems work at highway speeds, but many examples are capable of low-speed operation, with some even able to manage acceleration and braking through stop-and-go traffic. The best of the lot provide steering assistance as well.

Here, we look at 10 models in the sub-$50,000 price range that offer some kind of adaptive cruise control.

2023 Hyundai Sonata N-Line parked on a mountain road

2023 Hyundai Sonata

The 2023 Hyundai Sonata is a versatile model, offering several powertrain options to suit different needs, including a 290-hp turbo four in the $36,000 N-Line trim and a 192-hp hybrid setup for as little as $29,000. Hyundai is generous with its safety tech on this midsize sedan, providing every trim level with not only stop-and-go adaptive cruise control, but also blind-spot monitoring, automatic high-beams, driver-attention warning, lane keeping and centering, and collision-avoidance assistance.

2024 Audi A4 in gray parked in front of mountain views

2024 Audi A4

Buyers of the 2024 Audi A4 get adaptive cruise control as standard equipment on the automaker's compact sedan. The entry-level 2024 Audi A4 costs about $42,000 with 201 horsepower in 40 TFSI spec and $44,000 with the 261-hp 45 TFSI. Alternatively, you could choose a mid-level Premium Plus model — with an impressive Bang & Olufsen sound system and 360-degree camera as standard — and remain just under budget.

2023 Acura Integra A-Spec in red driving on an alpine road

2023 Acura Integra

The 2023 Acura Integra is a reboot of the brand's classic sports car, but now with a 200-hp turbocharged four-cylinder and, on the $38,000 A-Spec with Technology model, an available six-speed manual transmission. All trim levels come with an impressive array of driver-assistance features, including adaptive cruise control, but as you might imagine, the manual transmission car can't manage the stop-and-go operation of the CVT-equipped Integras. Instead, its adaptive cruise control system disengages when the speed drops below 22 mph.

2023 Toyota Corolla Hatchback driving on an urban street

2023 Toyota Corolla Hatchback

The 2023 Toyota Corolla hatchback, starting at $24,000, offers all the value, reliability, and quality of its venerable compact sedan sibling plus a bit more cargo space. The entire Corolla lineup — even the performance-oriented, manual-transmission-equipped, 300-hp GR model — comes with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0. That comprehensive tech suite includes adaptive cruise, lane keeping, collision-prevention tech, lane-departure alert with steering assistance, road-sign detection, and automatic high-beams. Unfortunately, Toyota's base adaptive cruise control system doesn't work at low speed.

2023 Subaru Forester in green driving on snow

2023 Subaru Forester

The 2023 Subaru Forester provides everything drivers expect from the brand: all-wheel drive (AWD), trail-friendly ground clearance, and ample cargo space. It also includes Subaru's EyeSight driver-assistance suite with adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist. It's reasonably priced, too, with 2023 Subaru Forester models starting around $28,000 and topping out around $38,000.

Red 2023 Mazda CX-30 driving on a city street

2023 Mazda CX-30

Mazda provides stop-and-go adaptive cruise control as standard equipment on its subcompact crossover. The cost of entry is about $24,000, but if you want your 2023 Mazda CX-30 to provide lane-centering assistance while adaptive cruise control is active, you'll need to choose the range-topping $37,000 CX-30 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus model, as it's the only one with traffic-jam assist.

2024 Kia Carnival driving on a city street

2024 Kia Carnival

Is it an SUV? A minivan? A multipurpose vehicle, as Kia likes to call it? Categorize it however you want; the 2024 Kia Carnival is an attractive option for families. The entry-level trims come with a litany of driver-assistance tech, but adaptive cruise is included as standard equipment starting at the mid-level $40,000 EX trim and up. Kia's adaptive cruise control system works in stop-and-go traffic as well as at highway speed.

2023 Honda Ridgeline

The 2023 Honda Ridgeline may not have the towing capacity or off-road credentials of some midsize pickup trucks, but its unibody construction, spacious cabin, and dual-action tailgate make it a great option for those who want to split the difference between an SUV and a truck. All Ridgeline trims include adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow as part of the Honda Sensing driver-assistance suite. Model pricing for the 2023 Honda Ridgeline starts around $40,000 and goes up to around $48,000 for the Black Edition.

2024 BMW 2 Series

BMW's smallest car is available in sporty two-door Coupe or four-door Gran Coupe form. No matter how many doors your 2024 BMW 2 Series has, adaptive cruise control is available for about $500 as a standalone option. Though not as capable as the system available on the more expensive 3 Series — that system supports stop-and-go with partial steering — the 2 Series' Active Cruise Control supports what BMW calls limited-force automated braking.

The adaptive cruise control available on the BMW 2 Series is designed to handle the more gradual changes in traffic flow found on many highways, but not the stop-and-go slog found on some commutes. No matter the form, either 2 Series with adaptive cruise control comes in well below the price cap, with Coupes starting around $40,000 and four-door 2 Series Gran Coupe models starting around $42,000.

2023 Volkswagen ID.4

The IQ.Drive suite of driver-assistance technologies is included as standard equipment on every 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 . That means the electric crossover gets not only adaptive cruise control, but also blind-spot monitoring and forward- as well as rear-collision prevention with automatic emergency braking. The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 Pro, which includes AWD and the longer-range battery, starts around $49,000.

All vehicle pricing includes MSRP plus destination charges (set at the time of publication), and will be rounded to the nearest thousand.
