Niagara Falls, Ontario

The powerful border-straddling Niagara Falls is actually composed of the American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and Horseshoe Falls (also known as Canadian Falls). Combined, these cascades have the highest flow rate of any waterfall in the world—more than a million bathtubs of water plummet over the edge every second. While they’re wildly impressive from the US, here’s how to explore the Canadian side.

Few things beat a Niagara Falls boat ride—take to the water on Hornblower Niagara, the most popular Canadian vessel, for a daytime, evening, nighttime, or fireworks experience and fantastic views. Alternatively, head into the 130-year-old tunnels and observation deck behind Horseshoe Falls on a Journey Behind the Falls tour; get bird’s-eye views on a flightseeing tour; or marvel at the cascades from the Skylon Tower, a 520-foot (160-meter) observation tower with a revolving restaurant.

If you visit the falls on a boat tour, prepare to get wet from the mist—which, of course, is all part of the thrill.

To experience Niagara Falls on a Maid of the Mist tour, you’ll need to cross to the US side; some Canadian tours offer cross-border transportation.

If you've opted for a Maid of the Mist ride, be sure you have appropriate documentation to enter both Canada and the US.

Opting for a small-group or a private tour can make the experience feel more personal; however, a large-group bus tour is a more economical way to visit.

Every night after dark, the falls are illuminated by a spectacular light show—a Niagara Falls night cruise is a great way to see it.

You can reach Niagara Falls from Toronto by bus, train, or car. Once you’re there, you can get around the town of Niagara Falls by shuttle bus. Drivers can find plentiful parking in the area’s lots.

Summer is prime time for Niagara Falls visits, as it’s the best season for boat tours, which generally run from April through November. There’s also a Niagara Falls fireworks show several times weekly during the summer months. In winter there’s still plenty to see and do at the falls, including snowshoeing and ice climbing.

If you have extra time during your visit to Niagara Falls, Eastern Ontario is a burgeoning wine region well worth exploring on a wine tour during the balmier months. Food tours are also popular ways to sample the region’s fresh and distinctive offerings. Other activities outside of a Niagara Falls tour include Clifton Hill (a massive entertainment promenade), Bird Kingdom, Marineland, and the Aquarium of Niagara (in New York).

WildPlay Niagara Falls – Zipline to the Falls (Canada)

Price: From $69.99 Duration: 60 to 90 minutes

Visitors must be at least 7 years old and weigh less than 275 pounds to safely participate in this Niagara Falls tour.

General admission is $69.99, though recent travelers strongly recommend upgrading to the skip-the-line ticket ($99.99) to avoid long wait times. The actual ride is pretty quick, but standard wait times can exceed an hour. A Beat-the-Heat Nighttime Experience – when the falls are illuminated – is also offered. Tours are available year-round from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday to Sunday.

Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours – Wet Jet Boat Tour (U.S. and Canada)

If you're looking for a thrilling ride on Class V whitewater rapids, travelers say you can't go wrong with Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours. You'll venture along the Niagara River to the Niagara Gorge and then the Niagara Whirlpool in a motorized Wet Jet at speeds up to 55 mph. Keep in mind: This tour does not go to Niagara Falls. You will get wet, so plan to bring a change of clothing and shoes, and also dress accordingly in cold weather.

Tickets for the 45-minute tour vary by departure location: Queenston, Ontario, or Lewiston, New York. For the Ontario tour, the cost is CA$74.95 (about $55) per adult and CA$44.95 (about $33) for children ages 6 to 12. For departures from New York, tickets cost $64.95 per adult and $39.95 per child. Note that kids must be at least 44 inches tall to take this tour. If you prefer not to get wet, take the Freedom Jet Dry Tour . All tours are offered May through October.

The Whirlpool Aero Car is safely suspended by six cables as it crosses the grand Niagara Gorge. The ride, which accommodates up to 35 passengers at a time, lasts about 10 minutes. Recent riders – including those with a fear of heights – agree the long lines are worth the wait for the incredible scenery.

24 Unforgettable Hours in Niagara Falls, New York

H ey guys, can I let you in on a secret? I’ve been itching to see Niagara Falls since I was a little girl! Who wouldn’t want to visit this fantastic place after seeing it on The Price is Right? Well, guess what? My dream finally came true when I got to go to Niagara Falls for a travel conference. And let me tell you, it was everything I hoped for and more! Here is how to spend 24 unforgettable hours in Niagara Falls, the dreamy city you’ve heard about your whole life.

Niagara Falls Fun Facts:  Water from four of the Five Great Lakes (minus Ontario) flows over Niagara Falls. It then travels to Lake Ontario, followed by the St. Lawrence River, which empties into the Atlantic Ocean.

Viewing the Incredible Falls Via Legendary Tours

First, you must see the falls up close and personal. It’s a must-do! The best way to do that is by taking the iconic  Maid of the Mist  boat tour; you get to wear those adorable blue ponchos and rubber sandals. This scenic ride has been going strong since 1846. Boats hold 600 passengers.

The ride starts and ends at  Niagara Falls State Park  but crosses into Ontario, Canada, for just a wee bit. You’ll get some incredible views and probably get a little wet, but hey, that’s all part of the fun!

And did you know this was America’s first state park?

After you’ve taken in the falls, check out the Cave of the Winds tour at Bridal Veil Falls. It’s separate from the boat tour but worth it. You’ll get to walk right up to the falls on these wooden platforms and snap some fabulous pics.

Waterfalls you’ll check off are Bridal Veil, American, and Horseshoe (which is in Canada).

Grabbing a Meal or Two in Niagara Falls

Now, let’s talk about food. If you’re into Indian cuisine, try the lunch buffet at  Zaika . They’ve got a bunch of yummy main dishes, veggie sides, and plenty of options for vegetarians, too. And don’t even get me started on their desserts – the Carrot Kheer and Rasmalai are to die for!

Zaika has free parking and a noteworthy happy hour.

But wait, there’s more! Did you know that Niagara Falls has its very own Anchor Bar ? Yep, the same place that invented buffalo wings! You can get your wings in all sorts of flavors, from mild to suicidal (if you’re feeling brave).

I like to get mine on a salad, but you do you!

A Bonus Attraction Right Up My Alley

If you’re feeling lucky, check out the glitzy  Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino . They’ve got a ton of slots (nearly 4000), poker, table games, and some pretty cool restaurants and shops.

Don’t forget to grab some Timbits from Tim Horton’s while you’re there – just don’t call them donut holes.

Overnighting in Niagara Falls

For a place to crash, I highly recommend the  Doubletree by Hilton Hotel . It’s close to the falls and downtown, and the rooms are nice and spacious. Plus, you get some pretty sweet views from the windows.

And if you’re in the mood for a drink, the swanky lobby bar is definitely worth checking out. Kudos to Doubletree for having in-room mini-fridges.

Niagara Falls: An Iconic American City

So there you have it, folks – 24 jam-packed hours in Niagara Falls, NY! It may have taken me 50 years, but it was worth the wait. If you haven’t been, I recommend curating your road trip to Niagara Falls, New York, today.

Thanks to Destination Niagara Falls USA for hosting my visit. As always, opinions are 100% mine and unbiased.
