Medan is a very large city on the north coast of the island of Sumatra in Indonesia, and the capital and largest city of North Sumatra province. Medan isn't a tourist destination, but it's a convenient stepping stone to other places like the 'weekend getaway' Berastagi , the island of Penang , Malaysia, and the popular, beautiful crater lake, Lake Toba .

kuala travel kota medan sumatera utara

Medan is the fourth-largest city in Indonesia after Jakarta , Surabaya and Bandung . With a population of about 2 million people, it is the largest city outside of Java . No ethnic group forms a majority; the largest ethnic groups are the Chinese, Javanese, Toba-Batak, Minangkabau, Mandailing Batak, Karo Batak, Southern Indians, and Northern Indians, and there are many more ethnic minorities.

Each ethnic group contributes to thousands of tasty, mouth-watering dishes found in every corner of Medan. They offer to locals and tourists dozens of food streets and hawker centers to suit their appetite at any time of the day. From the sweet Javanese cuisine, to delicious Batak grilled pork, to hot Padang dishes, from savory Chinese noodles, to spicy Indian curry, this varied cuisine is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It is obvious why the locals are so into food. The city is quite well known for "food-tourism", especially amongst other Indonesians.

It's interesting to contrast the old, Dutch style green areas, with parks, lawns, and huge old Dutch houses (now turned into government offices or commercial business) and the hundreds and hundreds of newer, shoddy shophouses sprawled together by the hundreds in the commercial areas along with a few modern style malls.

Look out for the motor becaks! A sort of motorized rickshaw, they are a common sight throughout Medan, spewing black smoke everywhere. Although be patient when searching for one, as some drivers often demand large amounts of money and have a temper.

Get in [ edit ]

Medan's Kualanamu International Airport and Belawan sea port are visa-free and visa-on-arrival points.

For more visa information, see the Indonesia page.

By plane [ edit ]

Medan's international airport, 3.6422 98.8852 1 Kualanamu International Airport ( KNO  IATA ), is in Deli Serdang, about 45 minutes from the city. It handles domestic and regional international flights. If you are from London or Amsterdam or are able to transit via either city, look out for Garuda Indonesia, as they often randomly commence flights between the cities.

After arrival, ATMs are quite easy to find in the interior of the airport. An information desk is also available.

International [ edit ]

There are direct international flights from Penang (for around US$70 return) and Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, Singapore , and Bangkok .

  • AirAsia from Kuala Lumpur , Penang , Bangkok
  • Firefly Airlines (operated by Malaysia Airlines) from/to Kuala Lumpur (via Subang Airport)
  • Lion Air from Penang
  • Malaysia Airlines from Kuala Lumpur
  • Sriwijaya Air [dead link] from Penang
  • Jetstar from Singapore
  • Saudia from Jeddah

Public transport [ edit ]

Train service is provided by Railink , a joint venture between Angkasa Pura II and Indonesian Railway. It is the first integrated airport rail link in Indonesia. City check-in and electronic tickets are also available for passengers' convenience.

The airport train runs up to 21 trips (including one facultative trip) a day in each direction with the first trip from 3.5908 98.6797 2 Medan Main Train Station beside Merdeka Square on Balai Kota street at 04:00 and the last trip from the airport at 22:00. The last train from the city goes at around 21:00, but check at the train station for the latest schedule. It is the fastest way to get from the airport to central Medan, taking 31-41 minutes. At the train station in Medan, tickets can be purchased only by credit or debit card, not with cash. A one-way ticket costs Rp100,000, unless you can find a promotional offer. A promotional ticket can sometimes be purchased for Rp55,000 online, or through travel agents or external channels (not from vending machines and ticket counters), no schedule change is allowed and the ticket is not refundable. Most updated schedule, pricing and booking can be checked here or from Mobile Application Railink, but it is advised to check at the train station if you want to travel either very early or late. Payment can be done by Klik Pay BCA, Click Pay Mandiri, Visa or Mastercard debit/credit cards.

Buses operated by state-owned bus company DAMRI connect the airport to two destinations in Medan, Jl. Gatot Subroto next to Plaza Medan Fair and Amplas bus terminal. The bus ticket is a lot cheaper than the airport train and normally takes 60-90 minutes to reach the airport, if traffic is not heavy. The last bus from Plaza Medan Fair goes at around 18:00, but this may change from day to day. If you miss the last one, you might be able to get together with others waiting there to go in on a taxi or grab taxi. Or take a rickshaw to the train station and take one of the last trains of the day.

Taxis are Rp130,000-150,000 for the ride to the city center, but will leave immediately, arrive quicker and be more comfortable than the bus. There is a Rp10,000 surcharge to all fares for airport pickup on top of the metered rate. Taxi drivers may be reluctant (that is, the fare may be much higher) to make the trip late at night.

By bus [ edit ]

The central station for all larger buses in Medan is 3.54 98.7192 3 Amplas Bus Station (not located in the center of the city though). This is where a lot of the smaller minivans go, and where travelers need to go to make connecting buses to further cities. Many of the large air-conditioned buses perform overnight routes.

Larger, non air-conditioned buses and large luxury buses (often Mercedes) that are air-conditioned (some have toilets on board, though they are squatting toilets that are difficult to use when the buses are moving, given driving habits and road conditions throughout Sumatra).

  • Medan - Lubuk Pakam line: Rp7,000
  • Medan - Binjai line: Rp6,000
  • Makmur/Halmahera , Jl. Sisingamangaraja Km 6,7. Large buses (AC or non-AC), runs daily (usually overnight) to major cities in Riau province.
  • Bintang Utara , Jl. Sisingamangaraja across Makmur terminal. Large buses (AC or non-AC) to major cities in Riau province.
  • ALS ( Antar Lintas Sumatera ), Jl. Sisingamangaraja Km 6,5. Large buses (AC or non-AC), with route to southern part of North Sumatra, Padang , Bukit Tinggi , Pekanbaru , Palembang , Kerinci, and major cities in Java island ( Jakarta , Malang , Yogyakarta , Semarang , Bandung ).
  • Sempati Star , Jl. Asrama. Luxury double-decker bus with toilet, entertainment screen on board, pillow & blanket, serves several cities in Aceh province. Prices range from Rp180,000 for Patas Executive to Rp430,000 for First Class (2017).

For East, typically Bukit Lawang , use 3.588952 98.610529 4 Pinang Baris Bus Terminal or possibly better bus shops near 3.596571 98.609074 5 Mawar Bakery Pinang Baris

For South, typically Berastagi , go to Pt. Almasar Indonesia shop (loket), near Citra Garden 2, south of Medan.

By car [ edit ]

The Trans-Sumatran Highway that connects the whole island crosses Medan's city center. Toll roads exist but only as far as Binjai to the north west and Tebing Tinggi to south east.

By boat [ edit ]

Medan is not near the sea, but nearby Belawan is a major port. The passenger terminal is called 3.7779 98.6809 6 Bandar Deli .

Ferries no longer run to Penang from Belawan. The nearest international ferry port is Tanjung Balai, Asahan, about four hours by train from Medan.

To/from other parts of Indonesia: Domestic routes are served by PELNI , it links Belawan with various ports in Sumatra and other Indonesian islands.

By train [ edit ]

Medan is connected by rail to other conurbations on the eastern coast of Sumatra, such as Tanjung Balai, Rantau Prapat, Pematang Siantar and Binjai. Executive, business and economy class trains are available, but if your budget allows, take the better class trains, which are faster and more comfortable. Tickets cost between Rp5,000 (economy) to Rp120,000 (executive). Online booking is available at here [dead link] .

Get around [ edit ]

Map

Medan city is swamped by becaks and taxis (the preferable choice to get around). There is also a form of public transport known as the angkot (small minivan).

By becak [ edit ]

There are two types, the noisy smelly motorized ones, called becak motor, and the human powered pedal ones, called becak dayung, or in English, trishaws or pedicabs. You have to be a good negotiator if you want to go by becak, with price ranging between Rp5,000-30,000 depending on distance and bargaining skills. The pedal ones are becoming scarce, but are much more fun for short trips. Most of their drivers are getting on in years, so they might not want to go too far.

Beware of scam artists who quote you one price to lure you in, even by showing a physical note to show you how much it'll cost, and then demand 10 times that amount when you arrived at your destination. Somehow, it's always 10 times: for example, 3,000 becomes 30,000, 5,000 becomes 50,000.

An audio and video recording of their license card in the becak and the conversation about what was agreed would be a useful defense.

Very few becak drivers speak more than a few words of English, but a map and lots of pointing will get you to the right place, even if it takes twice as long as you thought.

By taxi [ edit ]

Try to pick taxi from a reliable place such in front of malls, shopping centers or airport. Many taxi drivers will resist the use of a meter and want to bargain. Taxis with meters may put them on, but then say there is a minimum charge.

Try to avoid the use of taxis other than Bluebird or Express and always use the meter as they are the two most reliable taxi companies in Medan, this is a general rule that applies throughout the regions of Indonesia where either of these two taxi companies are available.

  • Express Taxi , ☏ +62 61 455 2211 . White taxis (usually Toyota Vios), they can usually be found around Medan, especially around central city and mostly use meter. Call in advance and they will come in time too (minimum fee by call is Rp25,000).
  • Blue Bird Taxi , ☏ +62 61 846 1234 . Blue color taxis, the newest taxi company to start operate in Medan. Friendly drivers and always use meter. Minimum fee by call is Rp20,000.

Medan is also served by online transport. You book them via their app from smart phones. Payment can be by cash, card or electronic wallet. The fee is calculated by app, so no need to bargain. Regularly offer promotions.

  • Grab The most popular choice and has the largest operated fleets.
  • GO-JEK Famous for its bike fleets, but also start offering car services.

There have been cases of online transport cars being attacked in a few places like the airport and train station when picking up passengers, though the situation seems to have calmed down. Consult your driver for pick-up point to avoid any problems.

Public transport is rather haphazard, though there are more or less fixed prices. Small minivans (called sudako or angkot by locals) have painted numbers (1 to 267 in Medan, or sometimes letters like MRX) that signify their routes, which even locals don't have memorized. If you speak Indonesian, just ask where people are standing by the roadsides which "bus" number corresponds to your location and what the price is in advance. When a van with the appropriate number approaches, flag them down as they don't make scheduled stops (just drive along a given route and drop off passengers when told or pick up new passengers when flagged). If you are a westerner, you might want to confirm the price before getting in, though there is another school of thought which believes it is better to just hand over Rp5,000 when you get to your desired destination, especially since drivers are always in a hurry and rarely speak any English. This type of transportation should only be braved by those with a point-to-point knowledge of Medan and a working knowledge of Indonesian so they know where to tell the driver to stop, unless you have a local friend who can take you around, or you have plenty of time to explore the city. Standard fare around town (per 2024) is Rp5,000/trip. Only trip from-to opposite side of the city should go up to Rp10,000-15,000. One easy route is Minibus #3 from the great mosque (at the side of Yuki Simpang Raya mall) to Sambu bus station near Medan Mall. Another useful route is MRX which goes between Amplas Bus Station - Yuki Simpang Raya - Merdeka Walk (near the train station) - Plaza Medan Fair (near Petisah Market)- Plaza Millenium and beyond. Bus routes are available in Moovit and Google Maps apps (Mar 2024).

A larger bus called Trans Metro Deli (green-colored) starts operating since 2020. The buses have AC, serves fixed route and fixed boarding station. Payment is only via electronic money or QRIS.

Talk [ edit ]

All locals will be able to speak Indonesian . However, the ethnic Chinese can often be heard speaking a localised variant of Hokkien known as Medan Hokkien, which is very similar to Penang Hokkien spoken across the Strait of Malacca.

Medan has a very high level of education and many younger people speak English very well. Those over 50 or 60 also tend to speak English and some even Dutch. If you find yourself stuck just tell the person you need someone who speaks English to help and there will be someone there in a matter of minutes. Speaking English well is a highly regarded skill by the locals so anyone who does so is well known and can be found quickly.

The locals will really appreciate your efforts to learn Indonesian, and please not be offended if they will laugh loudly with you too. It is not a mocking expression. Lots of Indonesians have grown up admiring foreign people via pop or Internet culture, and seeing one makes them happy to death.

Many tourists choose to use Medan as a quick through-point to travel elsewhere in Sumatra, but the city offers a glimpse of a large Indonesian city still unfrequented by western tourists, and shouldn't be quickly dismissed. However, Medan is more chaotic and has a bit more litter than Jakarta or Denpasar and open sewers abound. Furthermore, not as many people speak English in Medan as in other large Indonesian cities, but even a short list of useful expressions goes a long way, and Sumatrans are still unjaded by westerners.

Medan hosts a great lot of very nice Art Deco buildings from the Dutch colonial era, like the Old City Hall, the Post Office, the Great Mosque and many business buildings in and around Jl. Ahmad Yani. Some of them are in horrible shape, but most of them maintain their old splendor.

Spa [ edit ]

Although Sumatra does not have the same international reputation as Bali or Thailand for massage, it still forms a significant part of local culture. In rural areas, there will usually be a masseuse available for low cost, if you ask around, while Medan offers true 'spa' facilities, which are highly recommended for anyone seeking a spa experience away from the hustle and bustle of the city at a fraction of the cost elsewhere in the world.

Mostly hotels also have their own spa. You can contact your receptionist for further info.

Stay healthy [ edit ]

Medical services are easily obtained in Medan. Pharmacies litters around and generally open from Monday to Saturday (usually 09:00-21:00, some may open until 17:00), the same with clinics. On Sunday, most pharmacies and clinics are close, but there are several 24/7 pharmacies called K-24 .

Most hospitals open 24/7 and have Emergency Department and ICU. Hospital fees range from medium to expensive. Not all hospitals accept insurance - check before admitting.

Generally, locals have little confidence with hospitals and their medical staffs performance. Locals prefer going to Malaysia (Penang, Kuala Lumpur or Malacca) or Singapore to treat chronic or acute conditions. Such perception has improved considerably, but skilled medical staff are still few. If you are in doubt, avoid government-owned hospital and opt for private hospital instead.

Connect [ edit ]

Free Wi-Fi is offered in most cafes & restaurant; just ask the staffs. Otherwise, plenty of internet cafes sprawl around the city, especially in rural areas. SIM card with internet quota also is very affordable and can be easily obtained.

The area code for Medan and surrounding area is 061 .

  • Berastagi - a beautiful mountain resort, about 1½ hours' drive from Medan; popular among Medan people for weekend getaways. When it is deemed safe, you can hike the two nearby volcanoes, Sinabung and Sibayak. Check with the local authorities before hiking, as the Sinabung volcano erupted on 2014, and an alert in 2015 caused the evacuation of 10,000 people.
  • Kabanjahe - the capital of the Karo Regency. You can observe and experience the life of Karo people by visiting the villages around Kabanjahe. Kabanjahe is also a convenient post to climb Mount Sinabung. If you wish to spend the nights in the villages of Karo people, go to Gumagaba Youth Hostel located on Jalan SM Raja Simpang Amplas, Medan for information.
  • Bukit Lawang - A 3-hour journey from Medan, the latter half of the journey being a rather bumpy and pot-holed ride. A little village on the edge of Gunung Leuser National Park that was once home to an Orangutan rehabilitation center, which is now closed. However, regular feeding sessions take places at the feeding platforms. Jungle treks can be arranged or you can just relax by the river.
  • Lake Toba - formed by a volcanic eruption, it is one of the biggest fresh water lakes in the world. Has a large island, Samosir, in the middle. It is an absolute must see, a really magnificent place full of Batak culture on the shores of a mesmerizing lake. The food is wonderful, accommodation is cheap and the climate is perfect, it seems to be 25°C all the time. Rent a scooter to explore Samosir.
  • Pulau Weh - Garuda Indonesia operates three weekly flights to Sabang (Indonesia) on Pulau Weh, where some of Indonesia's finest diving can be found.

Indonesia Travel Guide

North Sumatra 7 Days / 1 Week Itinerary – Medan, Berastagi, Lake Toba

Planning an itinerary for Sumatra can be tough as it is not as firmly on the tourist trail compared to many other places in Indonesia, for example, Bali or Java and so it can be difficult to know what to do there and where to go. Planning the itinerary for Sumatra is also no easy feat but don’t worry as our itinerary will fit in some of the must visit places in Sumatra , fitting them all in one week.

In this itinerary, you will find yourself covering the 3 main tourist locations of Sumatra that are interlinked to your convenience. They are Medan , the main city and where you most likely fly into, Berastagi, the Karo highlands of rice fields and the famous Lake Toba , the largest volcano lake in the world with arguably the best tourist facilities in Sumatra.

Here is a suggested itinerary that you can tailor according to your own preferences for your 7 days in Sumatra.

Suggested time: 2 days Connects to Berastagi (2 hours) or Lake Toba (5 hours)

Medan is not typically thought of as a tourist destination by international travelers who used it simply as an entry and exit point to move on to other places. The domestic market in Indonesia, however, sees things very differently and Medan is known as the culinary capital of Indonesia.

Day 1 – Medan sightseeing and food

Tjong A Fie Mansion was a relative of the better known Cheong Fatt Tze who lived in Penang and built the gorgeous Cheong Fatt Tze mansion. This is one of Medan’s few real attractions and is definitely worth a trip to see how people would have lived in 1900. It’s also near to Kesawan Square, a great option if you are looking for some authentic Medanese food.

Addres: 105 Jl. Jend. A. Yani, Kesawan, Medan Bar, Kota Medan, Sumatera Utara 20111; Telephone: 0813 6120 3998. Opening hours: 9 am to 5 pm.

Soto Kesawan is located just across from Tjong A Fie Mansion so it makes sense to combine the two. You will need to get here before 4 pm however as they shut up shop after that. This small cafe is famous for its Soto, a soup made with coconut milk and filled with juicy prawns.

Address: Jl. Ahmad Yani, Kesawan, Medan Bar, Kota Medan, Sumatera Utara Telephone: 20236; 061 4514518 Opening hours: 7 am to 4 pm.

Day 2 – Medan Mosques and Palaces

Mesjid Raya Al Mashun is the great mosque of Medan and is known for its great beauty and imported building materials. You will see glittering green tiles here as well as graceful black domes and pretty stained glass and marble floors. Make sure to dress modestly if you are going to visit.

Address: Jl. Sisingamangaraja, No. 1, Medan Kota, Kota Medan, Sumatera Utara Telephone: 20212; 061 4512555.

Istana Maimun is the royal palace that used to belong to the Sultanate of Deli. Now it has been turned into a museum and you can also catch a traditional band here that play local tunes every day at 10 am.

Address: Jl. Sultan Ma’moen Al Rasyid No. 66, Medan Maimun, A U R, Medan Maimun, Kota Medan, Sumatera Utara 20151. Opening hours: 8 am to 5 pm.

Merdeka Walk – If you are looking for dinner in Medan but can’t decide what to get then consider a trip to Merdeka Walk. Here you will find a long strip that has a range of stalls selling all kinds of dishes from noodles, to rice, to soups, to desserts.

Address: Jl. Balai Kota, Medan Barat, Kesawan, Medan Bar, Kota Medan, Sumatera Utara 20236. Opening hours: Some places here are open 24 hours a day.

Moving on from Medan, you have two options:

How to get to Berastagi – Take a bus from the main bus station on Jalan SM Raja that will take you directly to Berastagi. The trip takes about 2 hours.

If you want to skip Berastagi then you can also take a bus directly to Lake Toba from Medan which takes around 5/6 hours.

Suggested time: 2 days Connects to Medan (2 hours) or Lake Toba (4/5 hours)

From Medan, you can easily move on to Berastagi, home of the Karo people with just a 2 hours bus ride. One of the highlights of Berastagi is picking your own fruit like oranges and strawberries at one of the local farms, although you need to be there when the fruit is ripening so it’s best to check when you are actually in Berastagi.

Day 3 – Berastagi volcano mountain

Gunung Sibayak is a dormant volcano has a large crater at the top from which gas still erupts. There are also hot springs here where you can soak in the naturally warm thermal waters. It is about a 7 kilometer walk to the top.

Day 4 – Berastagi waterfall

Sipiso-piso Waterfall – This is one of the best spots in Berastagi and you can see all the way to Lake Toba from here. You can catch a mini bus called an angkot straight from Berastagi to the waterfall or hire a motorbike and head out there on your own.

Moving on from Berastagi, we head on to Lake Toba.

How to get to Lake Toba – You will need to take a mini-bus to Siantar which takes about 3 hours and then another bus to Parapat which takes about 1 hour. It’s then a short ferry ride across to Tuk Tuk, the main island in Lake Toba.

Suggested time: 2 days Connects to Berastagi (4/5 hours) or Medan (5/6 hours)

Lake Toba is a gem in the region of Sumatra and has a crater lake that sits in a dormant volcano. It’s also the largest crater lake in the world and sits next to the charming island of Tuk Tuk.

Day 5 – Enjoy Lake Toba and Tuk tuk village

Enjoy the lake – One of the reasons people come to Lake Toba is the lake, so make sure that you enjoy all that it has to offer. You can indulge in a range of water sports here and can tour the lake in a speedboat. For something a little more relaxing you can simply float here in a rubber tube.

Visit Tuk Tuk – The village of Tuk Tuk is charming and is also the home of a Batak cemetery. Here you will find amazing carved graves Batak kings which are in the shape of traditional Batak houses, so make sure to give this a miss to get an insight into Batak culture.

Day 6 – Explore Lake Toba island

Tuk Tuk is covered in a range of attractions and due to its size, you can see most of them in a day. The best option is to hire a car and driver or a motorbike to whizz around the island.

Day 7 – Back to Medan

Getting back to Medan, completing the loop of Medan , Berastagi and Lake Toba in Sumatra. Here you can choose to head onwards north to Bukit Lawang for the Orangutan trek or the interesting city Banda Aceh or go for diving at Pulau Weh.

The ultimate travel guide for Sumatra

Lake Toba

Planning on visiting Sumatra? We feel you. Once you start researching about the biggest island of Indonesia you will find info on beautiful beaches, orang utans or lush rainforests. But you might also find people telling about being ripped off at the Pinang Baris bus station in Medan, crazy local busses, a lack of ATMs or locals who don’t speak English. And yes these stories are true.

But we can assure you, that if you decide for a vacation in Sumatra you will be rewarded with relaxation or adventure (or both), friendly locals, great food and a good time. As always a good preparation is all you need and therefore we created this travel guide for Sumatra.

Christine has travelled Sumatra solo many times, and Syafri was born and raised in Bukit Lawang (Read more about us here ). So the info gathered is mostly first hand experience.

Travel Guide Sumatra

About Sumatra

An exotic island in western Indonesia and a part of the Sunda Islands, Sumatra is the 6th largest island with an area of 473, 481, twice as much as that of UK. In ancient times Sumatra was known by Sanskrit name of Swarnadwīpa meaning “Island of Gold” due to vast deposits of gold in the island’s highland.

Because of its vast spread out land, Sumatra is divided into 7 Propinsi (provinces) of North Sumatra, Jambi, Riau, West Sumatra, South Sumatra, Bengkulu, Lampung and Aceh. Among which the prominent cities are Medan, Palembang and Padang while the most populated among these is Medan where throngs of tourists keep hitting the city every now and then.

Sumatra has so much to offer for travellers – deep rainforests, animals like orangutans, elephants or tigers, refreshing rivers and lakes, volcanoes and sandy beaches. Most people come to Sumatra for the orangutans. Besides Borneo, Sumatra is the only place in the world to see orangutans in the wild.

How touristy is northern Sumatra?

The most “touristy” areas are Bukit Lawang and Lake Toba, but compared to hot spots like Thailand and Bali they are basically untouched! Tuktuk on Samosir Island at Lake Toba is very well set up for tourists, but in fact it is hardly really busy. I (Christine) have been there many times and it often it feels like a ghost town. Bukit Lawang also is used to tourists, but nowhere near crazy. Also during the day most people are trekking in the jungle and you can relax in the beautiful village or chat with the friendly locals. Aside from these two areas, tourism is not a focus for most of the area, and still so many amazing places to explore.

Our travel guide for Sumatra covers:

Getting here and around

Best time to travel, accommodation, crime, safety & security, sim cards and wifi, plugs & adaptors, travelling with children.

  • Activities and things to see

Do’s and don’ts

Medan is the main hub for flights onto the island. But all major cities on Sumatra have international airports with connections to Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok or Singapore.

Travelling around Sumatra is sometimes difficult. The island is huge, the roads are bad and busy with lorries and motorbikes. Public transport is limited and an adventure in itself. Get prepared for endless hours in packed busses with drivers driving like crazy. Flying is the most convenient way to cover large distances on Sumatra.

There are varying options to get around Sumatra, including private drivers , tourist busses (shared cars) and local busses. Becaks (tuktuks) are mainly used to get around cities and villages. You should definitely get a ride on these transports to get a taste of real Sumatran culture, but make sure to bargain for the price.

Local mini busses are the cheapest way to get around, but this is everything but a comfortable journey. The mini busses have no air condition and can get very cramped. You will be sitting very close to others. There is no real legroom. Many people don’t speak English, but are always friendly and maybe want to take a photo with you. The roads can be bumpy and the bus stops frequently to collect and drop off passengers along the way. The driver will mostly put your luggage on the roof, but if there is space you can also keep it with you.

Renting a car is not recommended. The traffic is crazy and the roads are bad. But to be more free you can book a private driver.

Indonesia offers a free 30 days visa to citizens of 169 countries. This is not extendable and you should leave before the end of the 30 days. The Indonesian government recently raised the fines for overstay days to up to 1 million IDR per day. So make sure to avoid that.

In case you want to stay for more than 30 days you can apply for a 60-day visa at any Indonesian embassy or you opt for the paid visa on arrival ($35) at the airport. For that your passport must be valid for six months, you need two free pages in the passport and present a return ticket. The visa on arrival is valid for 30 days and can be extended for another 30 days. This will cost you another 300,000 IDR.

We do not provide specific recommendations for vaccines or any other health-related issues. Please consult your doctor in advance for these matters. Health risks and vaccine requirements may change any time. Therefore please speak to your doctor and seek the latest medical advice.

There are pharmacies in the main tourist areas and bigger cities. There is no hospital on Sumatra with international standard. In bad cases you need to go to Kuala Lumpur or Singapore. So make sure you obtain a travel insurance which covers these costs.

Tap water is not safe to drink on Sumatra. Bring a water bottle and you can refill it (sometimes even free) in restaurants or accommodations from big gallons.

Travel Guide Sumatra

Be prepared for all seasons in one day when traveling to Sumatra. The tropical days are humid and hot and we advise light, comfortable cloths. Light rain jackets are a must as there will be encounters with rain. Bring sun screen and hygiene products from home as they can be very expensive on Sumatra. Sun hats and a sarong/scarf can be a plus. See our comprehensive pack list for Sumatra

Sumatra is a perfect travel destination all year round. The temperature remains between 21°C to 33°C throughout the year. However, the wet season lasts from November to April while the dry season is from May to October. But the inland destinations such as Bukit Lawang or Lake Toba are perfect all year round. There is rain usually just in the afternoon for 1 hour or so.

The currency of Sumatra is Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). Exchange rates vary, but generally 1 EUR equals to around 15,000 IDR. Some examples: a cup of coffee costs 4,000 to 6,000 IDR, a meal in a warung or restaurant around 10,000 to 50,000 IDR.

ATMs on Sumatra are a bit tricky. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don’t, sometimes they are empty and sometimes you can only withdraw 500,000 IDR (hard when you have to pay tours or accommodation). And then there is the casual mati lampu (electricity cut). So we usually advise to either bring cash from your home country or withdraw whenever you can. Multiple credit cards are also a plus. The airports are a good spot to withdraw cash from the ATMS there. If you have a private driver or take a tourist bus, ask the driver to stop for ATMs along the way.

If you book tours, accommodation or transport in advance you can also ask if you can pay via bank transfer. With that you don’t have to carry so much money with you when traveling Sumatra. Paying with credit card is mostly only possible in bigger shops in the cities, Indomaret and the like.

Side note: There is no ATMs in Bukit Lawang.

Sumatra Accommodation

The hotels and guesthouses on Sumatra offer something for every budget – from simple and cheap rooms to expensive hotels. Especially in the high season during the summer months the prices tend to go up. Generally speaking you can get a double room for 150,000 IDR.

Hostels are not really common. You can find some in Medan. But in other tourist destination you can also find cheap rooms for solo travelers. Here other backpackers usually meet, so it is a kind of hostelly vibe.

Be prepared for cold showers throughout Sumatra. Some of the cheap guesthouses will provide a traditional bucket shower. This is a basin with water and a small bucket. Just use the bucket to pour water over yourself. It sounds strange, but you will get used to it.

Food on Sumatra

The spicy delicacies of Sumatra are a must taste once in your life. Their speciality is undoubtedly Rendang, Soto, Sambal or Gulai. Padang restaurants are very common on Sumatra. You will see the already cooked dishes in the front window with a fine variation of curries, fish, egg, tempeh and vegetables. Some other famous dishes include Rujak, Gado Gado or Cap Cay.

Nearly 90% of the people in Sumatra are Muslims, which makes Islam as the main religion. The other religions are Christianity, Buddhism and Hinduism.

There is no destination without issues. So it is advisable to keep an open eye when on the road in Sumatra. Flight delays and cancellations due to volcanic eruptions can be a problem, but are rather seldom. Taking basic precautions will keep you safe.

Travel Guide Sumatra

It seems Indonesia is much more developed when it comes to wifi and data. Every kiosk or warung offer free and good wifi. Also every accommodation in the tourist areas offers free wifi to guests.

Furthermore you can buy sim cards throughout Sumatra. These are cheap and the coverage is usually very good. To give you a rough idea for 5 EUR you get 10 GB of data. Make sure you get the sim card registered otherwise it won’t work. We can recommend Telkomsel which worked everywhere we went so far incl. the jungles around Bukit Lawang. They usually try to sell you a package, but these separate the data quote into video, local internet, normal data and the like. Try to avoid that and just book a package with only data through the Telkomsel smartphone app.

In Sumatra sockets are of type C, also known as the standard Euro socket, and F, also known as Schuko. Travelers from Germany don’t need an adapter. For everybody else it is advised to buy a travel adapter in advance, but you can also obtain one when you are in Sumatra.

From jungle lessons with locals, to swimming in the rivers and lakes or encounter wild animals, Sumatra has many options for families and is basically a huge playground for your toddlers and children. Travelling with kids on Sumatra can be a feast of adventures, new experiences and smiling faces. Every island of Indonesia is different. Sumatra has its own beauty, and you can see and feel that in its culture, nature, food and people.

Activities and things to see in Sumatra

Sumatra has so much to offer for everyone. Surfers find good breaks on the islands in the west, divers will love the underwater around Pulau Weh, nature lovers will awe when trekking in the rainforests around Bukit Lawang and the list goes on.

Here are some places and activities in Sumatra:

  • Swim or take a boat tour around the largest crater lake in the world, Lake Toba, and also get to know the Batak culture.
  • Trek to see orangutans in Bukit Lawang. The overnight stay in the jungle is a truly unique experience.
  • Visit Padang to taste the delightful cuisine of Nasi Padang, the special kind of rice served with a range of curries and side dishes.
  • Climb the volcano or relax in some hot springs around Berastagi
  • Come close to elephants in Tangkahan.

Travel Guide Sumatra

The people on Sumatra are super friendly and always in for a friendly chat. They will be extremely warm and respectful towards you. It is likely that you get invited for dinner. Here are some do’s and don’ts:

  • Use your right hand to eat and shake hand. The left hand is considered dirty.
  • Never touch someone’s head, not even a friendly padding on a child’s head. This is highly impolite.
  • Avoid kissing and touching your partner in public. You are in a Muslim country. Such things should just be kept private.
  • You will notice shoes and flip flops on the front porch of someone’s house, restaurants or shops. That’s because Indonesians take off their shoes when entering a house. So if you see a bulk or shoes in front, follow along and take off yours.
  • Dress appropriately. Again you are in a Muslim country. The locals here dress rather conservatively and expect others to do the same. Christine’s rule of thumb is either sleeveless shirt and long pants, or a shoulder-covering/long-sleeved shirt with shorts.
  • Many Indonesians greet each other with a handshake. After this the hand is led to the heart. Always use your right hand for greeting.

Berita Viral Pemerintah Kota Medan Provinsi Sumatera Utara Terapkan Kebijakan Parkir Gratis

POS-KUPANG.COM - Tayangan info Berita Viral singkat menayangkan adanya kebijakan baru
