The Digital Travel Credential: Taking the seamless travel experience one step further

While domestic and international restrictions imposed to combat the spread of the COVID-19 virus have a tremendous impact on cross-border passenger volumes, and the longer-term picture remains unclear, it is no less important to continue to leverage the latest technologies to both strengthen borders and improve traveler experiences. Over recent years, the technology has radically evolved in fields such as identity, security, biometrics and mobile applications to do exactly this. Technology has already transformed the world of border security and efficient processing of passengers, for example through secure ePassports (also known as an electronic Machine Readable Travel Documents or eMRTD), automated eGates, biometrics used to assure visa regimes, and mobile boarding passes. However, the story is far from complete. A newer generation of secure and efficient solutions are just beginning with the development of the Digital Travel Credential (DTC). Secure Identity Alliance, July 2020

Bringing ePassports into the digital era

The travel industry has been continuously innovating to maintain safe and smooth travel in the face of complex challenges. Innovations like automated self-service kiosks are deterrents of fraudulent activity while enabling travelers to identify and authenticate themselves using their biometric data . Digitalization has not only sped up the border control process, but it has also increased the efficiency of border management systems at land, air and seaports.

Despite the tremendous technological advancements to various aspects of the travel process , there is an integral part of worldwide travel that has not evolved at the same rate, the passport. The level of trust and confidence in the passport means that although there is great enthusiasm to digitalize this document, there is no overestimating how great an undertaking it is. The digital passport must at least deliver the same standard of security, reliability and privacy as the current ePassport in order to maintain global trust and interoperability.

Governments are now exploring ways to digitalize the passport so that passengers can continue to enjoy a seamless travel experience. To achieve this the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and International Organization for Standardization (ISO) are working with governments and technology experts to define and develop the technical specifications for the Digital Travel Credential (DTC).

There is little doubt DTC will be at the center of a new generation of border management systems that increase security while speeding the passenger journey through airports and across borders. Secure Identity Alliance, July 2020

Main principles of the Digital Travel Credential

The Digital Travel Credential is a virtual credential derived from a state-issued document. It is an exact representation of the electronic machine-readable travel document (eMRTD), that includes the holder’s facial image, biographical data, and security features. Based on secure Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) technologies, the DTC is securely stored on the holder’s device, and can only be shared with the holder’s consent.

As expected, the implementation and deployment of the Digital Travel Credential relies on the expertise of technology providers. In order to ensure global interoperability, all providers must be fully compliant with the technical specifications defined by ICAO and ISO .

With respect to authenticity and integrity, the DTC MUST be at least as secure as an eMRTD ICAO

Currently, passports are used as an authentication factor for proof of possession, identity and nationality. Due to the reliability of passports their use has expanded beyond the travel industry. With the holder’s biographic and biometric data stored on a chip, the ePassport is relied upon in a variety of use cases where absolute confidence in a person’s identity is required.

For the Digital Travel Credential to be globally accepted it must fulfill these uses and provide at least the same level of security and interoperability.

A hybrid approach is being used to develop the DTC, comprising of two elements that are linked cryptographically:

  • A virtual component (VC): A transportable data file which contains a copy of the biographic and biometric data in the physical passport.
  • A physical component (PC): This is currently the physical travel document itself, however it could be replaced by a secure element in a smartphone for a fully paperless experience.

There are three types of DTC:

In November 2020, the first DTC – self-derived – was endorsed by the ICAO. To date it is the only one that has been specified and approved by the organization. Specifications regarding the physical component defined in Type 2 and 3 are expected in 2022.

The digitalization challenge: creating a secure and reliable Digital Travel Credential

One of the major objectives of the DTC is to ensure a level of security that is equivalent to the physical ePassport. Bearing in mind that passports currently provide verification of the holder’s entitlement to state benefits, it is imperative that when it is replaced by the DTC, the confidence and security of both the holder and state are maintained. This requires a reliable process for the acquisition of personal data, especially biometric data, including face, fingerprints and/or iris.

Step 1: Creating the virtual component

Users are able to create their DTC from the comfort of their home using the national mobile ID application via their personal device. As this is an unsupervised process where the user is remote, it is vital that the user’s identity is verified as part of the DTC creation. To achieve this, the mobile ID application has access to national databases ensuring that the process is secure, and the data is reliable. The application will perform:

  • Automatic passport scans and authenticity checks:

To start the issuance process, the mobile ID app will ask the user to scan the data page of their ePassport, specifically the MRZ. This extracts the user’s information and photo from the chip. Before reading the data, the app will verify the data in the passport to check it has not been modified, and that it has been signed by the government.

  • User identity verification:

To authenticate the identity of the passport holder and ensure they are the legitimate owner, the national ID app will perform:

  • automatic live face capture and PAD . For a user-friendly experience, passive detection systems are recommended.
  • biometric verification – the national ID app will compare the live selfie to the photo extracted from the passport (1:1 biometric matching).
  • knowledge-based verification by accessing non-public data. The national ID app will cross check the user’s information with this “hidden” data to confirm their identity.
  • Authentication factors:

To finalize the virtual component issuance process, the national ID app will ask the user to define up to three authentication factors:

  • Biometric data : who the holder is
  • Smartphone : what device the holder is using
  • PIN code : information only the holder knows

Once the virtual component of the Digital Travel Credential has been created, the user can stop the digitalization process here, i.e. type 1. When the user is traveling, their passport will need to be presented at least once during border clearance . However, if the user wants to enjoy a completely paperless travel experience, they can link the virtual component of the DTC to their physical component (type 2) during a face-to-face appointment at the local city hall.

Step 2: Linking the virtual and physical components

Similar to the data page of the current ePassport, the virtual component contains information that must be shared in order to verify the holder’s identity. This information ensures compliance with existing verification rules for passport use. The link to a physical component allows authorities to check that:

  • the DTC has been issued by an authorized entity.
  • the data on the virtual component has not been altered.
  • the DTC has not been cloned through an authentication process similar to the current eMRTD.

The linking process will be supervised at a municipality, and will be based on the eMRTD. Alphanumeric checks and biometric authentication will precede the mandatory authorization and key delivering performed by the state issuance authority. This cryptographic link will reuse mechanisms already defined by ICAO. For example, the ones already established in current eMRTDs, such as chip authentication, active authentication, anti-cloning, etc.

Additionally, the face-to-face issuance of the physical component will provide the opportunity to expand the features and uses of the DTC , for example:

  • Storing additional data during the issuance process, i.e. a high-resolution ICAO portrait, which has been signed by the issuing authority during a supervised process.
  • Storing the DTC on a different device.
  • Considering the current health crisis, it may be useful to develop a secure link between the DTC and the Health Travel Pass to verify the holder’s health status and fitness to travel.

Step 3: Securing the Digital Travel Credential

Only the issuing state will have the capacity to authorize and certify the creation of a link between the virtual and physical components of a DTC. A PKI cryptographic technology will protect the encoded data. Additionally, the verification of the digital signature, provided by a Single Country Signing Certification Authority (CSCA), will give border authorities assurance of the authenticity of the DTC.

The Digital Travel Credential in action: exploring new opportunities

The DTC will allow border agencies, port operators and carriers to improve their efficiency while providing a safe and smooth travel experience.

Ease of use and contactless interactions are two of the main benefits of the DTC.

A unique identifier for a safer and more convenient travel experience

Thanks to their Digital Travel Credential, travelers will be able to prove their identity throughout their journey without providing a passport. From the comfort of their home, the holder can use a check-in app to consent to having a temporary unique identifier created. The app will then combine their biometric data, DTC and travel information to create the unique identifier which can be used to verify their identity at multiple touchpoints throughout their journey. This synergy between security and convenience means that efficiency in passenger flow is greatly improved at border crossings. The touchless design of the DTC and the fact that it is stored on the user’s device are critical mitigating factors in terms of hygiene concerns . The user only touches their own device. In light of the current public health crisis, contactless capabilities are key to reassuring individuals that it is safe to travel again.

Travel with your DTC at all times

The general increase in digitalization across various industries means that individuals have become accustomed to providing their personal data. They understand that in order to receive a more personalized service and, in terms of travel, to gain access to accurate and up-to-date information they must consent to the capture of their personal data, including biometrics. However, despite this familiar trend, there is one concern that will need to be robustly addressed so that traveler trust is maintained. That concern is data privacy , i.e. understanding who will have access to the holder’s personal data.

To remove the uncertainties around unauthorized access to private data, users will have the opportunity to choose between two options:

  • Store their unique identifier in their smartphone . In this case, they will have to scan their smartphone at every touchpoint to verify their identity.
  • Temporarily give consent to share their unique identifier with a central database. In this case they will be identified using their biometrics at multiple touchpoints

In both cases, consent is mandatory, which gives the user control of their personal data at all times.

Governments and port operators will optimize their border clearance process

The Digital Travel Credential will help government agencies to perform the necessary traveler checks prior to their arrival. This allows officials to be fully informed of who will be arriving, enabling them to welcome bona fide travelers, and take appropriate measures against individuals who pose a threat. Indeed, the automatic retrieval of travelers’ data and pre-arrival processes such as electronic travel authorization and on-the-spot visa issuance, will benefit from better data quality, and a decrease in errors and cases of intentional data manipulation.

The digitalization of the travel document will also provide government agencies with better travel history, allowing them to detect suspicious patterns and anticipate risks . As soon as a travelers share their DTC, government agencies can process or cross-check travelers’ data against reference databases and analyze it via a risk assessment solution in order to ascertain security clearance.

In the context of a sanitary crisis, government agencies and port operators may ask for additional checks in order to permit cross-border travel. Travelers may need to declare or prove that they are healthy, and a convenient and trustworthy option is to link the DTC to a ‘health passport’ . It may also be necessary to know if a traveler has flown from, or transited in, a ‘high-risk’ area before arriving at their final destination, or if they were close to infected passengers on a plane. It is needless to say, an appropriate balance between security and privacy will have to be actively maintained.

Carriers will be able to benefit from improved information accuracy at check in

Carriers will have fewer errors concerning traveler information during check in. The Digital Travel Credential will guarantee data integrity as it is derived directly from the national ID app and transmitted as soon as the traveler grants consent to share their DTC. This will significantly improve the data quality.

Thanks to DTC and biometric data, carriers can securely move the entire check-in process online. This will allow them to anticipate travelers’ arrival at the airport and thus allow better management of the flow of travelers and reduce waiting time.

  • A seamless travel experience: from theory to reality

Standards and specifications are necessary to provide guidance on how the Digital Travel Credential should be generated, however the overall success of the DTC relies on its adoption by all of the entities that are part of the traveler’s journey.

The main priorities include ensuring ease of implementation and a user-friendly experience. Governments have the responsibility of deciding on an approach that will produce the best outcome for their travel ecosystem.

Of course, developing a credential that will be embraced by governments, industry and citizens, and accepted throughout the world, is an inherently complex undertaking that takes time. But, with work continuing at pace, it won’t be long before vision becomes reality. With the recent coronavirus experience, travel documents might need to incorporate health certificates and this must be kept in mind in the development of the DTC. They will then be able to access all of their available training materials and take their exams online at any time from any location with an internet connection. It typically takes about four hours to complete all three levels of certification; however, this may vary depending on how quickly you are able to complete your studies and pass your exams.

9. American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA) Accredited Agent Certificate

The American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA) Accredited Agent Certificate is a professional designation that recognizes travel agents who have demonstrated a commitment to professionalism and excellence in the travel industry. It is an important distinction for travel agents, as it signifies that they have met ASTA's rigorous standards for knowledge, experience, and customer service.

In order to receive the ASTA Accredited Agent Certificate, travel agents must complete an extensive application process. This includes providing proof of at least two years' experience in the travel industry, submitting references from three current or former clients, and completing a comprehensive written examination. The exam covers topics such as customer service, sales and marketing practices, airline regulations and ticketing procedures, cruise industry operations, international travel laws and regulations, and other relevant topics.

The entire application process typically takes about four weeks or more to complete. Once approved by ASTA's Certification Board of Directors, the applicant will receive their official ASTA Accredited Agent Certificate in the mail.

The cost for obtaining the ASTA Accredited Agent Certificate varies depending on whether you are an individual or a business applying for certification. For individuals applying for certification through ASTA's Professional Development Program (PDP), there is a one-time fee of $299 USD plus applicable taxes; for businesses applying through PDP Plus there is an annual fee of $499 USD plus applicable taxes.

10. The Institute of Certified Travel Agents (ICTA): Certified Leisure and Corporate Travel Consultant

The Institute of Certified Travel Agents (ICTA) is an organization that provides certification for leisure and corporate travel consultants. It is a professional designation that recognizes individuals who have demonstrated knowledge and experience in the field of travel.

To obtain the Certified Leisure and Corporate Travel Consultant (CLCTC) designation, applicants must complete a series of courses and pass an exam. The program consists of three core courses: Introduction to Travel, Leisure Travel Planning, and Corporate Travel Planning. Each course must be completed within six months, and the exam must be taken within one year after completing the core courses.

The cost to obtain the CLCTC designation varies depending on whether or not you are already a member of ICTA. For non-members, it costs $250 for each course plus a $100 application fee. For members, it costs $200 per course plus a $50 application fee. There is also an additional fee for taking the exam which is currently set at $150.

Once you have successfully completed all requirements for the CLCTC designation, you will receive your certificate from ICTA along with other benefits such as access to discounts on products and services related to travel planning, networking opportunities with other certified travel agents, and invitations to exclusive events hosted by ICTA.

11. The Institute of Hospitality: International Diploma in Hotel and Tourism Management

Once accepted onto the course, students will need to attend classes at their chosen study centre or online.

The cost of taking this course varies depending on where you take it but typically ranges from £1,000-£2,000 (GBP). This fee covers tuition fees only; additional costs may include textbooks and other materials required for completion of assignments.

Do You Really Need a Travel Manager Certificate?

When it comes to the question of whether or not you need a travel manager certificate, the answer is “it depends.” If you are looking to work in an organization that requires a travel manager certificate, then yes, you will need one. However, if you are simply looking to gain experience in the travel industry and are not necessarily interested in becoming a certified travel manager, then no, you do not need one.

A travel manager certificate is intended for those who want to specialize in managing the operations of a travel organization. It generally covers topics such as budgeting and financial management, customer service and communication skills, tour operations and scheduling, marketing strategies and more. It also provides an understanding of the legal aspects of running a business related to the travel industry.

Having a travel manager certificate can be beneficial for those who are already employed in the travel industry but seeking to advance their career. Having this type of certification can demonstrate your knowledge and expertise in the field and make you more competitive when applying for positions with higher responsibility or pay grades. Additionally, having this type of certification could open up opportunities that may have previously been unavailable due to lack of experience or qualifications.

On the other hand, if you do not have any prior experience working in the travel industry and are just getting started out, then obtaining a travel manager certificate may not be necessary right away. You could gain valuable experience through internships or entry-level positions which would give you an opportunity to learn about how different aspects of managing a business related to the travel industry work without requiring certification first.

Ultimately, whether or not you need a Travel Manager Certificate will depend on your individual goals and ambitions within the field of travel management. If it is important for your career advancement or job prospects then obtaining one would be beneficial; however, if it is not necessary for your current situation then there is no reason why you should pursue it at this time.

Travel Agent Certification---What are your Options? [+Comparison Chart]

You’re wondering what type of travel agent certification is out there. That’s funny. I’ve written an article on just that topic! How handy.

Let’s make sure we’re clear about what this article is and what it is not about:

It IS about travel agent certification.

It IS NOT about travel agency numbers/travel agency accreditations ( more on travel agency accreditations ).

It IS NOT about travel agent training ( more on travel agent training and education ).

What’s the difference between travel agency training and certification? Well, it’s a blurry line so we decided to make our own lines in the sandbox. When we say "certification," this is what we mean:

  • Something comes from organizations whose education programs specialize in travel industry exclusively
  • A comprehensive training program, not just a specific destination or vendor
  • Education that is not provided by a vendor, destination, or travel agency

When it comes to certification, we’re also going to be selective. The travel agent certifications we mention aren’t the only certification or training program for travel agents—you can find plenty more. What we want are organizations that are active in the travel agent community at large.

What constitutes an organization that is “active in the agent community?” For our purposes, it means they attend travel agent events, they provide resources and tools beneficial to agents, I know them or have met someone that vouches for them. As a caveat, I'll mention this article isn't an endorsement of any of the programs—think of it more as a vetted list!

I believe that an active organization = having a pulse on things. An out of touch organization is the last thing I want associated with a travel agent certification program! Therefore, organizations that I haven’t seen active in the community got the axe. Sorry. Let's mosey on.

The Basics of Travel Agent Certification

Travel Agent Certification

First things first; understand that there is no universal travel agent certification. If you found a site that suggests you need to take their course in order to become a travel agent, run the other direction!  There are no travel agent certifications required by law in the US and most of Canada.

Here’s how it works: In the travel industry (especially for the US), there is no formalized process to become a travel agent. This means there is no national board exam you need to pass, no state certification requirements (although, make sure you’re familiar with the  US and Canadian licensing and seller of travel laws ).

tico Ontario Certification

That can be great—anyone can break into the industry regardless of education, finances, or location. On the other hand, anytime ‘anyone’ is involved, by default you get… how shall we say this? A wide range of capabilities. Translation: you’ll have some really unqualified people calling themselves travel agents. Boo. (But hey, let's be honest! This applies to any industry, including those with rigorous requirements to get through the gates.)

But you take the good with the bad—that’s the upside and the downside of an industry with a low barrier to entry.

Next up? A breakdown of travel agent certification programs—also known as "acronym fun." The travel agent certification programs we’re going to mention—and we've got a few of them—involve acronyms, fun! Stephanie Lee, MCC, CTC, CTIE … awesome! Mmm, I love me some acronyms.

ASTA's VTA Travel Agent Certification Program

ASTA Verified Travel Advisor (VTA), 2020

Launched in 2017, ASTA's (American Society of Travel Advisors) VTA program is the new kid on the block in terms of certifications. However, established back in the days of steamships, ASTA is the largest and longest-standing travel association in the industry. It's a household name among travel industry professionals, and advisors who are VTA certified will get their seal of approval. ASTA's VTA focuses on cultivating a level of professionalism among its certified agents. It focuses on topics such as industry ethics, legal regulation competency, in addition to tried and true topics like marketing and sales.

The other perk of being VTA certified? You pull to the top in the travel advisor search on ASTA's website. Chalking up 700,000 consumer visits annually in 2019, your VTA credentials give you a ton more exposure!

If you're not quite ready for full ASTA certification, check out their Roadmap to Becoming a Travel Advisor course that I created in partnership with ASTA. :) It's $199 and includes a year of ASTA's future travel professional membership, which is honestly quite the deal!

Pre-requisites:

You don't need to be an ASTA member to enroll in their VTA program. However, the only prerequisite for the VTA program is to qualify for their membership. To fulfill this requirement, independent contractors (their base-level membership) is to be based in U.S. and earn less than 1 million in sales annually (if you earn more, you will qualify for a different level of membership). ( Read more details on their member qualifications here .)

Here's the cost breakdown for ASTA's VTA program:

  • $399 for ASTA members
  • $598 for non-member independent contractors (this includes 1 year ASTA IC membership)
  • $729 for non-member Travel Advisor (includes 1 year ASTA agency membership); $179 for recertification.

Time to Complete:

The program can be done at your own pace, but must be completed within 12 months of enrollment.

Maintenance:

VTA advisors must re-certify every two years. This involves a $179 recertification fee for two additional courses or one course and participation in ASTA Operational Excellence through Benchmarking program (to be completed within 12 months).

The Travel Institute Travel Agent Certifications

With nearly 50 years under their belt, The Travel Institute holds the prize for the longest-running travel agent certification program. They’ve got a few programs, each focusing on agents at different stages in their career. These certifications are used by travel agents across the industry—cruise, corporate, luxury, leisure. Here's a few of their certifications below:

Certified Travel Associate (CTA)

Travel Institute CTA

  • Description:  Agent must have 12 months experience in the industry and are required to take 8 core classes, 4 electives. (This is a prerequisite for the CTC certification, listed below). At program's end, you must pass the CTA exam with a 70% score, at minimum.
  • Time to Complete:  Most agents can finish within 3-6 months but have up to 12 months
  • Cost: $450 for complete online course (with an added $25 fee if you want to pay in monthly installments). The print course is $550 plus shipping. $250 for test only (must have 12 months experience).
  • Maintenance: To maintain certification, agents must earn 10 continuing education credits (CEUs) a year.

Certified Travel Counsellor (CTC)

Travel Institute CTC

  • Description:  Agents must have 5 years experience in the industry and a CTA designation (testing out is available). The CTC is a management skills program designed for travel agents looking to build or grow their business. Curriculum consists of 10 courses on key topics and the completion of a "white paper," 2000-3000 words in length.
  • Time to Complete:  Most agents can finish within 6-9 months but have up to 12 months
  • Cost: $550 complete course, or $600 for CTC Fast Track (for agents with 5 years of experience, but who don't have a CTA certification)

Certified Travel Industry Executive (CTIE)

Travel Institute CTIE

  • Description:  This designation is for non-consumer sales roles with 5+ years of experience. It is equivalent to the CTC. Curriculum consists of (100) videos 10-15 minutes in length and the completion of a white paper 2000-3000 words in length.
  • Time to Complete:  18 months
  • Cost: $550 to complete course
  • Maintenance:  To maintain certification, agents must earn 10 continuing education credits (CEUs) a year.

You may be thinking, hey, Travel Institute has a TAP test everyone talks about . . . and you would be correct! Here's the deal on that on the TAP Test :

This one is a bit confusing, but I want to mention the Travel Agent Proficiency (TAP) test offered by The Travel Institute (Cost: $95). This is not a travel agent certification—think of it like a final exam for a Travel Agent 101 course. No degree comes with it, but you’re learning. Also important to note, the TAP test is also offered by institutions outside The Travel Institute.

Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) Travel Agent Certifications

Global Business Travel Association (GBTA) Certifications

GBTA Travel Certification

The GBTA is the front runner in the industry when it comes to corporate (ahem, business) travel. Being corporate-minded, it's also no surprise they also have an independent board whose purpose is to "administer a valid, reliable, defensible, and psychometrically sound examination."

I had to look up the definition of psychometrically. I wanted to make sure I wasn't sending people to a program where they are psychologically tortured. We're good, don't worry! :)

Here is the GBTA accreditation option:

Global Travel Professional (GTP)

Global Travel Professional Certification

  • Description: This is the travel agent certification for those focused on business travel management. It gauges a travel agent’s competency in four different “domains:” Strategic business planning; buyer/supplier relations; travel program administration; and Data/Analytics/Finance. Since it’s a global program, the GTP accreditation is not limited to travel agents in the US/ Canada.
  • Pre-requisites: The official stance is the program is only for agents with "a minimum of three years of business travel related experience." Don't let that dissuade you if you've never had the title "travel manager". If you've been booking travel for your company as an admin assistant for three years, you've got the experience!
  • Cost: $350 GBTA members, $450 for nonmembers. I hate to bombard you with yet more acronyms, but current CCTE (Certified Corporate Travel Executives), SMMC (Strategic Management Meetings Certification), CGTE (Certified Government Travel Executive), and GLP (Global Leadership Professional) holders can take the exam for free.
  • Time to Complete: Must apply for a exam date/location . Test centers allot 3 hours to take the exam.
  • Maintenance: GTP holders must re-certify every three years by earning 50 re-certification credits. This is done by showing involvement in professional development activities or by passing another GTP exam.

To Certify or Not to Certify? That Is the Question.

I’m often asked if an agent should go through a travel agent certification course before they start their agency. That’s the million dollar question—to certify or not to certify. First, keep in mind this site specializes in working with agents—many of whom are new to the industry—that are aligned with host agencies.

In travel, training is plentiful but also (very) fragmented. You can get training through your host agency, franchise and/or consortia. Suppliers, destinations, and associations have boatloads of trainings for you; travel schools—both on and offline—have trainings to help you learn the ropes. It’s like the toothpaste aisle at Target, the options can be overwhelming.

Here’s my thought on getting a travel agent certification:  To avoid wasting money and time, get your toes wet first and see if you even like the industry.  Join a host agency, make a few bookings, try your hand at being an entrepreneur and travel agent—it’s not for everyone. If you do like it, I say certification is a great way to network, expand your knowledge base, and get a cute (yet professional) lil’ acronym to put after your name!

Broadcast those Certifications!

Whether it is a certification we mentioned above, a destination or vendor specific training certification or maybe Host Agency Reviews' own 7 Day Setup Accelerator Certificate , make sure you let the world know! It shows you've been busy and are dedicated in furthering your education and network in the travel industry. When you earn a new certification, push out to your various social media channels and definitely add it to the certification section of your LinkedIn profile !

The best travel experience gifts for travelers

Best experience gifts for travelers in general

#1 tinggly travel experiences.

Tinggly "Experience the world" gift card

Let me begin with the best overall experience gift for travelers; literally anything for Tinggly.

Alright, I know, it’s a bit general, but honestly, just any activity or tour from Tinggly will work for travelers. And what I love the most about Tinggly is that they allow you to buy any experience as a gift, without booking a date yet. That way, you and the recipient can pick a date that suits both of you after you’ve given the gift!

#2 A bus, train, or plane ticket

Photo from airplane window

What’s a better experience gift can the gift of an actual trip ?

If you know when the receiver is available and you know their date and full name (this very essential if you’re booking a flight). Then you can go ahead and book a ticket for them.

Alternatively, you can also go for a Skyscanner gift card, so they can pick one themselves.

And for more sustainable options, check out train or bus tickets. Interrail offers train passes to travel in Europe and Flixbus has bus routes all over the world.

#3 A surprise trip

travel experience certificate

This is another really cool experience gift for travelers. Again, it’s the gift of an actual trip. But this time, even you won’t know where they’re going!

Srprs.me and Pack up + Go organize complete surprise trips, where the recipients will only find out the destination when they’re at the airport. For European destinations head over to Srprs.me and for US destinations, Pack up + Go is your go-to organization.

Oh, and if you’re a control freak, don’t worry. Both companies allow their customers to give some guidelines. For example, warm or cold destinations, or exclude cities you really don’t want to visit. So you will have some control over where the recipient is going.

#4 The best travel experience gifts for him or her

travel experience certificate

If you would like to find the best travel experience gifts for him or her specifically, then these Tinggly gift boxes are exactly what you need.

Both the for him and for her gift box give the receiver access to over 5,000 different experiences around the world. The only difference is in the packaging.

#5 Unique accommodation

House by a lake

A few nights at a really cool location is another awesome gift idea. Instead of their regular hotel (or hostel, if they’re backpackers ), you can give them a night in a private house by the lake, in a treehouse, a luxurious spa hotel, or basically any really unique accommodation.

For that, you only have to check out Cool Stays, which offers (guess what) cool stays around the world. And if you’re not sure which dates to book, you can also go for the gift card, so the recipients can book it themselves.

Best travel experiences gifts for foodies

#6 dinner at an international restaurant.

travel experience certificate

This is one of the easiest and best experience gifts for travelers who love food. Simply take them out for dinner to one of their favorite restaurants. Preferably a restaurant that serves food from their favorite country.

The Tinggly “Taste the World” gift card is another awesome travel experience gift idea for foodies. With this gift box, they can book food tastings or cooking classes in over 50 different countries in the world.

#8 Eatwith gift

travel experience certificate

Eatwith is another great option if you want experience gifts for foodies. Eatwith provides cooking classes, food tours, and dinners with and cooked by locals in more than 130 countries.

Check out all their upcoming events to book a fun food activity straight away, or go for the gift card so the receiver can pick one for him or herself.

#9 Alcohol tasting

travel experience certificate

This is one of the coolest experience gifts for travelers who love alcohol ; a tasting activity. Just pick whatever drink they like, wine, beer, whiskey, gin, or cocktails, and head over to Viator to find a tasting location in the receiver’s area.

#10 Cooking classes

Tagines on stove

A cooking class is another awesome gift idea for foodies. You can find all sorts of cooking classes on Viator, try to find a local class near the recipient’s home.

Best travel experience gifts for adrenaline seekers

#11 skydiving or bungee jumping.

travel experience certificate

Do you need travel experience gifts for someone who is always looking for an adventure? Or for someone who loves living on the edge?

Then skydiving or bungee jumping is an awesome idea. If there’s a cool location close to their home, you can simply take them there. Though, for a traveler, it’s even more awesome if you take them to a beautiful location. And for that, the Tinggly experiences came in handy!

You can find the most awesome jumps across the globe, buy the experience, and book a date once you’ve given the gift to the recipient!

#12 Helicopter ride

travel experience certificate

Maybe a helicopter ride is slightly less of an adrenaline rush than skydiving or bungee jumping, but it’s still one of the coolest experience gifts for travelers who love adventure.

And as opposed to skydiving and bungee jumping, during a helicopter ride, the receiver actually has the chance to admire the view and take photos.

Tinggly offers over 500 different helicopter rides around the world, such as Rio de Janeiro, Manhattan, or Niagra falls, so I am sure you can find one that the recipient will love!

#13 Unique driving experiences

travel experience certificate

This is one of the best experiences for travelers who love cars and driving; take them on unique driving activities. For example, off-roading with a Land Rover or Jeep, driving in an old-timer, or driving a race car, check out Tinggly for all options. Or simply find them close to the recipient’s home.

Best experience gifts for travelers who love learning

#17 travel photography course.

Women taking photos

Travelers love photos, they are basically their physical or digital memories of their adventures. And everyone wants these memories to be the best. And for that, a course on how to make better travel photos is a great gift idea.

#18 Dancing class

travel experience certificate

For some reason, this is one of the most popular experience gifts for travelers who love Latin America. I guess it’s because dancing is such a big thing in the area. The most popular ones include salsa, bachata, tango, kizomba, and cha-cha.

The best way to give a dancing class is to find a local dance school. However, if there are no schools in the receiver’s area, you can also go for online dance classes on Udemy. But I would really recommend live classes because it’s easier and better to learn in person than online.

#19 Fight classes

Man jumping in the air

Fight classes are great experience gifts for travelers, especially if you pick an international one such as this Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu on Udemy.

Besides the fact that they will learn a new sport from their favorite country, they will also learn how to defend themselves. And that makes this a great gift that also keeps them safe.

Just like dancing classes, I would advise you to look for fighting schools in the recipient’s area, but if you can’t find any, an online course on Udemy is the second best option.

#20 Experience gifts for language learners

Sign saying Love to learn

If you are looking for the best travel experience gifts for language learners , I have got two options for you.

The first one is a gift card from Italki which the receiver can use to find a real language teacher online. The second one is an online language course on Udemy. You can find courses for almost every language there.

Best travel activities gifts

#21 concert tickets.

People at a concert

This is one of the best experiences gifts for anyone, not just travelers. A ticket to a concert of their favorite artist!

For travel lovers, it’s even better if you buy a concert ticket in a different county and you combine the concert with a trip. But just a ticket is an awesome gift as well.

#22 Sports match tickets

Full soccer stadium

Are you looking for gifts for sports fans?

Then a ticket to a match is always a good idea. Whether they’re into baseball , basketball, or soccer , check out Ticket Master to find tickets to any match.

#23 Professional photoshoot

travel experience certificate

Flytographer is a platform where you can find and book local photographers around the world.

So if the receiver will be in Paris soon, you can book a professional photographer in Paris to take the most beautiful and professional photos at the Eiffel Tower, The Louvre, and other iconic places. Making them truly memorable.

#24 Walking tours

travel experience certificate

I am a big fan of guided walking tours . It’s a great way to learn more about a city in a fun and interactive way. So if you are looking for the best travel experience gifts for any type of traveler, a guided walking tour is a cool idea. Check out Tinggly to find options around the world.

It doesn’t even need to be in a different country. I’m from the Netherlands, but for Father’s and Mother’s Day, I gave my parents a walking tour with a guide in Amsterdam and they loved it.

#25 Hot air balloon rides

A photo of a hot air balloon

A hot air balloon ride is another awesome activity for travelers. Especially at a beautiful location. The Tinggly “best balloon rides” experience gift card gives the receiver the opportunity to choose from 55 epic balloon rides around the world.

#26 Scuba diving or snorkeling

travel experience certificate

Travelers love exploring the world, and this also includes the underwater world!

You can either take them on a diving or snorkeling trip to discover the most beautiful places underwater. Or if they don’t have it yet, you could also gift them a PADI course, so they will learn how to dive without a guide.

#27 Airbnb experiences

Airbnb card

On Airbnb, you can find amazing activities hosted by locals. They offer activities around the globe, so all you need to do is pick a location and check which local activities are offered there.

#28 Scavenger hunt

travel experience certificate

This is one of the best travel experience gifts for people who travel with kids! A scavenger hunt.

Let’s Roam offers cool hunts all over the US and in some other countries such as Australia, the UK, Italy, Ireland, The Netherlands, Mexico, France, and Germany.

#29 Travel experience gifts for kids

Woman riding on the back of a horse in water

I actually dedicated an entire post to help you find the best experience gifts for kids , so definitely check that out if you need inspiration (because there are so many fun things to do with kids!).

For example taking them to kid-friendly museums, waterparks, horseback riding, national parks, water activities, or other attraction parks.

Best travel membership gifts

#30 museum membership.

travel experience certificate

The last two travel experience gifts are great because they’re not just one experience. With a membership, the receiver can use your gift as often as they want (usually within a year).

For people who love museums, a museum membership is an obvious choice. You can either go for a museum close to their home (such as MoMa for people who live in New York), or for a membership that gives them access to multiple museums. For example, the Museum Pass in The Netherlands, or The National Art Pass in the UK.

#31 National park annual pass

Annual pass of US national parks

The last experience gift on this list is awesome for nature and outdoor lovers in the US. The national parks & federal recreational lands annual pass is a card that gives the receiver access to more than 2,000 sites in the US. And the best thing?

It does not only give them free access, but their car and three other passengers as well!

Guidelines for National Endorsement of State Travel Counselors Certification Program

Travel Counselor Certification Banner

⏎ Back to National Council of State Tourism Directors (NCSTD)

The U.S. Travel Association and the National Council of State Tourism Directors created the national endorsement program for two reasons:

  • To promote travel information services nationwide.
  • To encourage individual states to develop a certification program that enhances individual travel counselors' efforts, skills and achievement to direct and advise travelers seeking assistance at travel information centers.

Endorsement of a state's travel counselor training programs is available exclusively to NCSTD members or the officially designated state entity responsible for the state travel/welcome information center program.

Program Guidelines

For a state's travel counselor training program to receive NCSTD's National Certification, it must meet the following standards:

  • Candidates must have been employed as a travel counselor for a minimum of one operating year to become eligible.
  • The program must include a written examination (view full exam guidelines  here ).
  • State information center managers must provide appropriate recognition to counselors who complete the test.
  • Each program endorsement is valid for three years.

Program Certification Process

Follow the three steps to receive your state’s endorsement and request certificates.

For a state’s travel counselor training program to receive NCSTD’s National Certification, it must include a written examination, in a minimum of two variations to allow for retesting of those who do not pass the test initially. The exam may also be available in alternate formats if needed.

You can view guidelines and sample questions here .

Complete the Request for NCSTD Endorsement of State Travel Counselor Certification Program form .

Please note, that you will be asked to upload two versions of your state’s certification exam. Please allow six weeks for approval.

After counselors pass the exam, you can submit counselor names through this request form .

Please allow 48 hours to receive a confirmation notice that your certificates have been mailed.

The square is the picture postcard of Russian tourism, so make sure to bring your camera when you visit! No matter the season, or the time of day, it’s delightfully photogenic!

It’s also home to some of Russia’s most distinguishing and important landmarks, which we’ve made sure to include further down in this itinerary. It’s an important center of Russia’s cultural life and one of the top places to visit in Moscow!

In 1990, UNESCO designated Russia’s Red Square as a World Heritage site. Visiting this historic site is a true bucket-list event and essential addition to your itinerary for Moscow!

It’s the best known of the Russian Kremlins – citadels or fortress’ protecting and dominating a city. During the early decades of the Soviet era, the Kremlin was a private enclave where the state’s governing elite lived and worked.

The Kremlin is outlined by an irregularly shaped triangular wall that encloses an area of 68 acres! The existing walls and towers were built from 1485 to 1495. Inside the Kremlin museum complex, there are five palaces, four cathedrals, and the enclosing Kremlin Wall with Kremlin towers.

The Armoury Chamber is a part of the Grand Kremlin Palace’s complex and is one of the oldest museums of Moscow, established in 1851. It showcases Russian history and displays many cherished relics. Definitely make sure to check out this museum while you’re here!

The Moscow Kremlin

The churches inside the Moscow Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, Church of the Annunciation, and the bell tower of Ivan Veliki (a church tower).

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. Pictures and filming while inside the building are strictly prohibited, and security guards will stop you if they see you breaking this rule.

The mausoleum is only open on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday – unless it’s a public holiday or a day scheduled for maintenance. The hours it’s open for each day are limited, make sure to check online before you visit to make sure you can fit this into your Moscow itinerary for that day!

The cathedral was built from 1555-1561 by order of Tsar Ivan the Terrible. It was designed with an iconic onion dome facade and enchanting colors that captivate all who see it. Fun fact: If you’re wondering why Russian churches have onion domes, they are popularly believed to symbolize burning candles!

This iconic cathedral has become a symbol of Russia due to its distinguishing architecture and prominent position inside the Red Square. It’s one of the most beautiful, wonderful, and mesmerizing historical cathedrals in the world!

St. Basils Cathedral

The interior of the church surprises most people when they visit. In contrast to the large exterior, the inside is not so much one large area, but rather a collection of smaller areas, with many corridors and small rooms. There are 9 small chapels and one mausoleum grouped around a central tower.

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

The church rarely holds service and is instead a museum open for the public to visit.

Insider Tip: During the summer months the line to go inside the cathedral can get quite long! Make sure to arrive early or reserve your tickets online to guarantee quick access into the cathedral!

The museum does an excellent job of telling the full story of the exciting space race between the USSR and the US! It highlights the brightest moments in Russian history and humanity and is very interesting and fun for all ages!

If you’re a fan of space or just curious about gaining insight into Russia’s fascinating history of space exploration, make sure to add this to your 3 day itinerary in Moscow!

The Alexander Garden

  • A tranquil place to relax near the Red Square
  • Green lawns dotted with sculptures and lovely water features
  • The park is open every day and has no entrance fee

The Alexander Garden was one of the first urban public parks in Moscow! The garden premiered in 1821 and was built to celebrate Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s forces in 1812!

The park is beautiful and well maintained with paths to walk on and benches to rest on. The park contains three separate gardens: the upper garden, middle garden, and lower garden.

The Alexander Garden

Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!

The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.

It provides a bit of relief from the city’s high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!

Ostankino Television Tower

  • Television and radio tower in Moscow
  • Currently the tallest free-standing structure in Europe
  • Make sure you bring your passport when you visit, you can’t go up without it!

For spectacular views of the city, make sure to add the Ostankino Television Tower to your itinerary for Moscow! This impressive free-standing structure provides stunning views of the city in every direction. The glass floor at the top also provides great alternative views of the city!

Ostankino Television Tower

It takes just 58 seconds for visitors to reach the Tower’s observation deck by super fast elevator. The tower is open every day for long hours and is a great site in Moscow to check out! There is even a restaurant at the top where you can enjoy rotating views of the city while you dine on traditional Russian cuisine or European cuisine!

The tower is somewhat of an architectural surprise in a city that is not known for skyscrapers! To see the city from a new perspective, make sure to add this stop to your Moscow itinerary!

Izmaylovo District

  • The most popular attractions in this district are the kremlin and the flea market
  • Outside of the city center and easy to reach via metro
  • Most popular during the summer and on weekends

Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.

The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!

Izmaylovo District

Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!

You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

  • Closed on Mondays
  • Filled with old arcade games that visitors get to try out!
  • The museum also includes a small cafe and burger shop

For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy!

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

19 Unique And Fabulous Experiences In Moscow

travel experience certificate

  • Destinations

Thinking of visiting Russia? When visiting such a famous city, one must, of course, visit the iconic landmarks first. Moscow has plenty of those, most of them in the center of the city, which is very well-planned for tourists. Once you’ve seen the sights that are on most travelers’ lists, it’s time to branch out and visit some of the lesser-known sites, and there are some fascinating places to see and things to do.

I know this list is long, but I just couldn’t help myself. You probably won’t have the time to see them all. But that’s okay. Just scroll through the list and choose what sounds the most interesting to you. Where possible, make sure to book in advance, as things can get crowded, especially during high season.

Saint Basil's Cathedral in Moscow, Russia

1. The Red Square, Kremlin, And Surroundings

Red Square (Krasnya Ploshad) is the heart and soul of Russia, and where much of the country’s history has unfolded. This is the most famous landmark in Moscow and indeed the whole country, it’s an absolute must-do! The square is always full of people and has a rather festive atmosphere!

Saint Basil’s Cathedral

This is the famous church with the rainbow-colored, onion-domed roof. The cathedral was commissioned in the 1500s by Ivan the Terrible and according to legend, the Tsar thought it was so beautiful, that he ordered that the architect’s eyes be cut out afterward, so he could never build anything more beautiful! He wasn’t called Ivan the Terrible for no reason!

Lenin’s Mausoleum

The “love-it-or-hate-it” of tourist attractions in Russia. A glass sarcophagus containing the embalmed body of Russian revolutionary, Vladimir Lenin. It may seem a bit bizarre to display the mummy of a person, but it has been there for almost half a century and the 2.5 million visitors who come each year, clearly feel the queuing and thorough body search are worth it, to be in Lenin’s presence.

Pro Tip: no photos and no loud talking are allowed inside the Mausoleum.

Eternal Flame

There is an Eternal Flame in honor of an unknown soldier on the left side of Red Square. The hourly changing of the guards is worth seeing.

The Kremlin is the official residence of the Russian president. You can see it from the outside, or you can take an excursion to one of the museums located inside. This is the biggest active fortress in Europe, and holds a week’s worth of attractions! Once behind the 7,332-feet of walls, there are five squares, four cathedrals, 20 towers, various museums, and the world’s largest bell and cannon to see. Worth a special mention is the Armory Chamber that houses a collection of the famous Faberge Eggs.

Pro Tip: You can only go inside the Kremlin if you are part of a tourist group.

Interior of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscos

2. Bolshoi Theatre

Bolshoi Theatre translates to “The Big Theatre” in Russian, and the building is home to both the Bolshoi Ballet and Bolshoi Opera — among the oldest and most famous ballet and opera companies in the world.

Pro Tip: It’s hard to get an inexpensive ticket, so if you’re reading well in advance of going to Moscow then try buying tickets on the official website . Last-minute tickets cost around $250 per person. If this is out of your budget, about an hour before a performance, you can try buying a ticket at the entrance from a reseller. Most can speak enough English to negotiate the price.

Tour the Bolshoi Theatre: You can take a group guided tour of the Bolshoi Theatre which focuses on the history and architecture of the theatre and behind the scenes. There’s an English language tour that lasts 2 hours and costs around $300 for a group of up to six.

GUM, a popular department store in Moscow

3. Luxury Shopping At GUM And TSUM

Russia’s main department store, GUM, has a stunning interior that is home to over 100 high-end boutiques, selling a variety of brands: from luxurious Dior to the more affordable Zara. Even if shopping is not on your Moscow to-do list GUM is still worth a visit; the glass-roofed arcade faces Red Square and offers a variety of classy eateries. TSUM, one of the biggest luxury malls in town, is right behind the Bolshoi and GUM. It’s an imposing building with lots of history, and worth a visit just for its design and its glass roof.

Christ the Savior Cathedral in Moscow

4. Christ The Savior Cathedral

This is one of Russia’s most visited cathedrals and is a newer addition to the gorgeous array of Muscovite cathedrals, but don’t let its young age fool you. After perestroika, in the early 90s, the revived Russian Orthodox Church was given permission to build a cathedral on this site. It did the location honors and built the largest temple of the Christian Orthodox Church. The façade is as grand as you’d expect, but it’s the inside that will mesmerize you, with its domes, gold, gorgeous paintings, and decor!

The cathedral is located just a few hundred feet away from the Kremlin and was the site of the infamous Pussy Riot protest against Putin back in 2012.

Pro Tip: Bring a shawl to cover your hair as is the local custom.

Gates at Gorky Park in Moscow

5. Gorky Park

Moscow’s premier green space, Gorky Park (Park Gor’kogo) is the city’s biggest and most famous park. There is entertainment on offer here for every taste, from outdoor dancing sessions to yoga classes, volleyball, ping-pong, rollerblading, and bike and boat rental in summer. In winter, half the park turns into a huge ice skating rink. Gorky Park is also home to an open-air movie theater and the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art. There is also Muzeon Art Park, a dynamic contemporary space with a unique collection of 700 sculptures. It is located right in front of Gorky Park.

6. Sparrow Hills Park

If you take a walk from Gorky Park, along the Moscow River embankment, you’ll end up in the city’s other legendary park, Sparrow Hills. Although the park doesn’t offer as many activities as its hip neighbor, it has a great panoramic view of the city

Pro Tip: You can take a free walking tour to all of the above attractions with an English-speaking guide.

River cruise in Moscow

7. River Cruising

One of the best ways to experience Moscow, and see all the famous landmarks, but from a different angle, is from the Moscow River. Take a river cruise. Avoid the tourist crowds. There are little nameless old boats that do the cruise, but if you are looking for a more luxurious experience take the Radisson Blu cruise and enjoy the sights with some good food and a glass of wine.

Moscow Metro station

8. Metro Hopping

Inaugurated in the 1930s, the Moscow Metro system is one of the oldest and most beautiful in the world. Started in Stalinist times, each station is a work of art in its own right. I’d recommend touring the stations between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. This way, you’ll be able to properly see it without the crowds. Ideally, I’d recommend taking a tour with a knowledgeable guide with GuruWalk, who will tell you stories of forgotten stations and how the history of the country is interconnected with the metro development. If going by yourself, then I definitely recommend checking out: Mayakovskaya, Ploschad Revolutsii, Kievskaya, Kropotkinskaya, Kurskaya, and Novoslobodskaya stations.

Visit the free Moscow Metro Museum: For real train enthusiasts, located in the southern vestibule of Sportivnaya station is a small free museum. Here you can take a peek into the driver’s cabin, see a collection of metro tokens from different cities, and see different models of a turnstile, traffic lights, escalator, and more.

Moscow State University at dusk

9. Moscow State University View

In his effort to create a grander Moscow, Stalin had seven skyscrapers built in different parts of town; they’re called the Seven Sisters. The largest of these buildings and the one with the best view is the main building of the Moscow State University. Although this is a little outside the city center, the view is more than worth it.

Izmailovsky Market in Moscow, Russia

10. Izmailovsky Market

Mostly known for the city’s largest flea market, the district of Izmaylovo is home to a maze of shops where you can get just about anything, from artisan crafts to traditional fur hats, handcrafted jewelry, fascinating Soviet memorabilia, and antiquities. It’s also one of Moscow’s largest green spaces. There are often no price tags, so be prepared to haggle a bit. Head to one of the market cafes for a warming mulled wine before continuing your shopping spree.

The History of Vodka Museum is found here, and the museum’s restaurant is the perfect place to sample various brands of the national drink.

Once you’ve covered the more touristy spots, Moscow still has plenty to offer, and the places below will also be full of locals! So for some local vibes, I would strongly recommend the spots below!

The skyscrapers of Moscow City

11. Moscow City

With a completely different vibe, Moscow City (also referred to as Moscow International Business Center) is like a mini Dubai, with lots of impressive tall glass buildings. Here is where you’ll find the best rooftops in towns, like Ruski Restaurant, the highest restaurant both in Moscow City and in Europe. Moscow City is great for crowd-free shopping and the best panoramic views of the city.

Art in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow

12. Tretyakov Gallery

Tretyakov Gallery started as the private collection of the Tretyakov brothers, who were 19th-century philanthropists. They gave their private collection to the government after their deaths. If there is just one museum you visit in Moscow, I recommend this one!

Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve, former residence of Catherine the Great

13. Tsaritsyno Museum-Reserve

Tsaritsyno was a residence of Catherine the Great more than two centuries ago. It became derelict during the Soviet era but has now been fully renovated. With its opulently decorated buildings, gardens, meadows, and forests, Tsaritsyno Park is the perfect place for a green respite in Moscow.

Kolomenskoye Museum-Reserve in Moscow

14. Kolomenskoye

A 10-minute metro ride from the city center is Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve, where you can get an idea of what Russia looked like 200 years ago. You’ll find ancient churches (one dating back to the 16th century), the oldest garden in Moscow, and the wonderful fairytale wooden palace of Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich, father of Peter the Great.

Ostankino TV Tower in Moscow at night

15. Ostankino TV Tower

Built in 1967, Ostankino TV Tower was the tallest free-standing construction in the world at the time, it’s still the 8th tallest building in the world and the highest in Europe. It’s also the best observation deck, with a glass floor and 360-degree views. The speedy elevators take you 1,105 feet in next to no time.

Pro Tip: You need to book in advance; entrance is based on specific ticket times and the capacity is limited and only a certain number of tourists are allowed per day. Don’t forget your passport, you’ll need it to get through security.

The floating bridge of Zaryadye Park in Moscow

16. Zaryadye Park

Zaryadye is a newly opened, landscaped urban park so new you won’t find it in a lot of tour guides. The park is near Red Square and is divided into four climatic zones: forest, steppe, tundra, and floodplains, depicting the variety of climatic zones in Russia.

These last three suggestions are a little quirky, but all are really worth checking out.

17. Museum Of Soviet Arcade Games

Release your inner child playing on 66 arcade machines from the Soviet era! What a great way to spend a couple of hours when tired of visiting museums and palaces. The staff speaks excellent English and are happy to explain how the games work.

The rooftops of Moscow, Russia

18. Moscow Rooftop Tour

Take a 1-hour private Moscow rooftop tour with an experienced roofer. I can just about guarantee none of your friends will be able to say they’ve done it! For your comfort, I recommend wearing comfortable shoes. Take your camera, there are some amazing photo opportunities out there!

A pool at Sanduny Banya in Moscow

19. Sanduny Banya

This classical Russian bathhouse opened its doors in 1808 and is famous for combining traditional Russian banya services with luxurious interiors and service. If you enjoy spas and saunas, then you should experience a Russian bathhouse at least once in your life! Go with an open mind and hire a specialist to steam you as it’s meant to be done — by being beaten repeatedly with a besom (a leafy branch)! This is said to improve circulation, but is best done by a professional!

So there you have my list of things to do in Moscow. I could have gone on and on and on, but I didn’t want to try your patience! There are so many things to do in this vibrant city that you’ll definitely need to allocate several days for exploring.
