Had an incredible time in our escape campervan. It has been the stand out p art of our trip of the US, offering flexibility, fun and something different. I was wary of driving the van as I am used to driving a much smaller vehicle on the other side of road! But Emmanuel at the San Fransisco branch was so friendly and took plenty of time to talk through the van and its features, put us at ease and encourage us to have some great adventures. Pick up and drop off were smooth with no issues regarding trying to get money out of us etc. Like the idea of the swap cupboard for people to leave leftover food and toiletries. Vans are pretty old and show some signs of wear but fully functioning and we had no issues while on the road. Cant wait till we can do this again! ... Read More

Would rent again! My husband and I picked up in Las Vegas and did a week lo ng trip throughout Utah in one of the Mavericks. The Maverick vans are old and we had some small issues with the van throughout the trip, but the Las Vegas team was responsive and took care of us when we got back. When we rent again we'll splurge for one of the newer vehicles. ... Read More

(Translated by Google) We had a great time. The staff are very VERY friendl y and explain everything in detail. The van was great, the bed in the van very comfortable and very easy to set up. The small kitchen in the back had everything you need (fridge, cooker, sink) you can book the cooking set, but I have no idea what it contains because we didn't book it. The curtains in the van darken the interior very well for sleeping. We really enjoyed the time and would definitely do it again. But then for a longer period of time. ... Read More

Oh my gosh, we had the BEST time with our campervan! I think the layout is just great! Husband and wife. Bed was great. Heads up that the depot is in Oakland, so really not near SFO. We were very fortunate to have friends who picked us up from the "real" airport and took us over to the depot. Important things to bring: whisk broom, cigarette to USB charger, flashlight/lantern, lightweight sleeping bag. Our bedding kit had a comforter. So lovely and snuggy in Yosemite, but too hot for coastal beach areas. I would absolutely ! rent from this company again!! ... Read More

(Translated by Google) We had a great time with our Maverick campervan. Bef ore departure and for questions, always a very fast response from the service center via email, very nice. Great service at Escape Campervans LA, friendly and helpful staff. We had no problems with the campervan. The only drawback was that the battery of the refrigerator was not very strong, so after standing overnight it was empty again and the refrigerator was no longer cold. The solar panel worked well, so no problems during the day or while driving. How will I get by without a bathroom in the campervan?

While our Big Sur , Mavericks , and Santa Cruz models don’t have bathrooms, our renters do just fine using campground facilities and public restrooms, and practicing Leave No Trace principles when dispersed camping. It is a matter of your own comfort level, but the freedom that campervan travel gives you compared to RVs is worth it for many!

How many people can travel in the camper with me?

  • Big Sur : Seats 5, sleeps up to 5 (2-3 in queen bed, 2 in rooftop sleeper if added).

  • Jeep Camper :  Seats up to 5 (designed for 2) and sleeps 2 (rooftop sleeper).

Seating is according to how many seat belts are available in each vehicle. You can always add the rooftop sleeper (Big Sur and Mavericks only, standard on Jeep Camper) or bring along our ground tent accessory to sleep more people. Bedding kits are available for rent to accommodate the number of people in your party.

Can I buy the van?

We occasionally sell our more “experienced” campervans—fit out, paint job, and all! a campervan parked in joshua tree

Want to test-drive the van life, literally? Travellers Autobarn has campervans for hire. We took one on the road to try it for ourselves.

Living out of a camper is no longer just for dirtbag climbers or travel-hungry globetrotters. People of all ages and from all walks of life have embraced either traveling or living full-time by campervan. And that’s just as true with renting the van life. For those not ready to purchase, there are plenty of great applications to using a van for adventures.

Who are campervans for? Really, anyone. Recent grads, remote workers, seasonal park employees, travel nurses or travel writers, retirees, and more are hitting the road, sleeper-style.

And Travellers Autobarn offers fully built-out campervans — with tons of room for gear — at an unbeatable price. I loved the van itself. But I also liked the services and features the company provides. These include unlimited mileage, access to a campground app subscription, solar panels for off-grid living, and more.

Kuga Campervan Rental: On-the-Road Review

Travellers Autobarn, an Australian company, just upgraded its fleet of Kuga campervans . The company is also fairly new to the U.S. It’s been running in Australia since 1993, but operations began here in 2019.

I lucked out and took one out for a 7-day road trip through California. Here are my thoughts on the experience.

Travellers Autobarn campervan at camp with camp chairs and a blanket outdoors

Overall Quality

The van excelled in some areas. In others, it was pretty standard.

The overall essentials provided in the van were really great, and they were certainly everything I needed. The company thought of lots of little details, including USB charging ports for phones, a can opener in the kitchen, and exterior lighting for sitting outside at night.

All of the company’s Kuga Campervans were updated in 2020; however, the actual vans date back as far as 2012. This means that the cab, engine, and driver’s area aren’t quite new.

Now, I can’t totally fault Travellers Autobarn on this — the brand does market itself as a budget rental service. Just know that you might get a campervan, fully built out and functional, but older.

Appliances and Functionality

The appliances in the campervan are awesome. I tested every aspect and the features rocked it.

The Dometic gas cooktop sports two burners, and the Dometic fridge worked like a charm. The solar lights, panels, and outlets were all easy to navigate. And the electric hookups did the job as well.

Also worth noting, unlike an RV, the solar batteries are quiet — there’s no generator humming or groaning in the night.

campervan propane burner

Now, as someone who usually backpacks or tent camps, I only used the electric hookups one night (which power an added 12V microwave). Everything else in the van ran off solar . In my opinion, the hookups are great, but totally optional — with solar power, you can choose whether or not to stay in a developed campground.

Kuga campervan bed

The campervan I tested sleeps up to three folks. I never had three people inside, but the length and width of the bottom-level bed are spacious enough for two, and the upper loft (purely for sleeping) is adequate.

There’s not much headroom for the third person up top — about a foot — but hey, it can sleep three. And when the loft is stored away, there’s still plenty of livable space for one or two.

I used the upper loft section for bedding and extra gear storage. It’s worth noting that the max standing height in about two-thirds of the van is 6’5”, more than ample for most travelers.

Gear and Storage

Let’s talk storage, which is arguably the most important part of a campervan. No one wants to take a 2-week road trip or embrace the van life if there’s no room for toys and luggage on board.

There are three storage bins under each bench in the living space of the van: two cubby-sized bins and one large main compartment. I was impressed. This room provided stash space for climbing gear and shoes , carry-on luggage, camp blankets, furniture, chairs, dirty hiking boots, and more.

On this trip, I had a 50L duffel bag, camp chairs, a blanket, a paddleboard , a daypack, a hydration bladder pack, and a travel Dopp kit all stashed away.

That’s in addition to the water hosing and electric hookups, bedding, sleeping bags, pillows, and a full cookware and kitchen set (teapot, mugs, utensils, dinnerware) provided and stored in the van.

campervan living space

For a one-week road trip, I had everything I needed and more. For anything longer, I would have still had ample room for gear, but I would probably have to be more strategic about food storage. (The campervan included a fridge, so I didn’t bring a cooler.)

Based on what I packed, I was able to utilize the storage for both living essentials and my personal gear. Converting the storage benches from a dining area to a bed was also fairly easy, though most days I opted to forgo the interior table. I picnicked, ate, and aprés outdoors instead.

Water, Gas, Solar, and Electric

The Dometic cooktop uses standard propane, and it’s a great size. Additionally, the fridge fit more than I thought it could. Anything not stored in the fridge went into the cupboards, which had extra room for dry goods in addition to the van’s cookware.

The water tank in the Kuga campervan holds an impressive 13 gallons (some van builds have tanks as small as 5), providing plenty of water storage for a week or several weeks.

The hose that came with the van (for refilling the tank, which I never needed to do but did test) is a standard 25-foot hose. The water pressure in the sink was great, and this aspect was seamless to operate.

campervan water refill

The solar panels on the roof also worked great, and — thanks to California’s sunny disposition — it provided plenty of power along my trip. And the battery system was quiet.

The solar panels powered outlet and USB charging ports, the fridge, and interior and exterior lighting. In one national park, it took less than 2 hours from sunup for the two solar panels to fully charge. Impressive.

This campervan rental and road trip experience would have been miles different without this awesome solar-powered feature included on the Kuga Campervans.

Travellers Autobarn: Pick Up/Drop Off Process, Customer Service

Picking up my campervan had some ups and downs.

First, the company does an awesome job with communication, namely pre-check-in emails and digital information about your trip. I got an email several days before, a day before, a receipt upon arrival, and several at the end of the trip.

The Los Angeles Travellers Autobarn office, which I assumed would be a sunny and busy mecca, was a fairly low-key van depot. The public-facing company storefront was closed due to COVID, so take the following with a grain of salt. There was only one other person waiting to check in and pick up a van, so it didn’t take long.

The staff member who checked me in was helpful but didn’t seem the most engaging. He gave a full overview and walkthrough of the van features, answered a few questions I had, and (after a short mixup with a set of keys) I was on my way.

Returning the van at my final destination was a much smoother experience. The staff was super friendly, and the office seemed a bit more organized. Overall, my experience with Travellers Autobarn staff and customer service (in person and over the phone) was positive.

Renting With Travellers Autobarn: Why You Should

Now, I’ll dig into all the behind-the-scenes, fine-print details. Here are the pros (there are lots) and cons of renting a campervan with Travellers Autobarn.

Campervan: Fully Equipped

It’s a campervan! Sure, you could rent a car from Budget and road trip to hit some national parks, or stealth camp in a U-haul .

But really, if you are going to give someone else (or yourself) a road trip adventure, go all out. Bring refrigerated goods, bring your favorite pillow, bring the surfboard, and the trad climbing rack.

Bask in the convenience of solar panels and running water. Glamp it up.

Low Renter’s Age

Unlike Outdoorsy , GoCamp , and several other van rental services, you don’t have to be over 25 to rent with Travellers Autobarn. (There’s no young driver fee, either!) All you need is to be 21 or older.

This is a huge perk for recent grads (like my younger sister), young professionals, and millennials looking to dip their toes into the ever-trendier “living out of a van” lifestyle.

No Mileage Fees

Repeat after me: Free. Unlimited. Mileage. Take that unexpected road detour. Stop at your friends’ house. Don’t stress about how many miles you spend driving around looking for the perfect spot to camp .

Don’t worry about added costs if you go over. Travellers offers unlimited miles on every campervan rental. I love this aspect of its service.

the Kuga Campervan parked along California's pacific coast highway

Budget-Friendly

Travellers Autobarn told us that the all-inclusive (campervan rental, insurance, supplies) average cost per trip is $20-40 per day. (My trip came to almost exactly $33 a day.) We’ll do the math for you: A 2-week road trip is about $420. That’s cheaper than most airline costs — and definitely cheaper than a week of lodging.

Even on a DIY road trip, I can see myself spending at least $20 per day on what the campervan provides: a vehicle, lodging, a place to cook and eat (stove and fuel), and a gear room on wheels. Now, the cost does go up when you factor in things like campground fees and gas, but that’s all part of being on the road.

To make the deal sweeter — or if you are on a tight budget ( ahem , young professionals) — and worth your while, Travellers tosses in things like discounts for more days on the road, a free subscription to a campground app (with discounts) for all renters, and free 24-hour roadside assistance (which you hopefully won’t need!).

Campervan Cons, Other Logistics

I experienced very few cons with this campervan rental service. But, there were a few.

Driver and Vehicle Safety

Travellers Autobarn is a budget campervan rental company. Its vans are affordable and accessible to nearly everyone. If you are looking for a luxury, $200-per-night van getaway, this isn’t it.

The company discloses that its vans are older (as old as 2012) GMC and Chevrolet vehicles, meaning the cab isn’t the most up to date, and its controls may be manual (side mirrors, windows).

I imagine for renters not familiar with driving 18-foot vans, high-tech vehicle features like smartphone compatibility for directions and automatic controls in all vans would be nice. And that may even make the driving experience safer.

van cockpit

For context, we not only test-drove a campervan, but we also took a look at Travellers Autobarn’s whole California fleet for a better perspective. I’d guess a bit more than half of the vehicles had newer, automatic controls.

However, I also had a few issues on the topic of vehicle safety. One, the van I got had over 130,000 miles on it (this is not a con, just more mileage than I expected). And two, I had a few engine/service lights go on and off while driving.

When you are 80 miles from the nearest town or driving up a mountain road, this can be nerve-wracking. I had cell service, and I was able to call the company’s customer service (the team member I reached was helpful and knowledgeable) to determine whether it was safe to continue driving. But no one wants to have to deal with that on a road trip, especially when the company is marketing travel to remote places.

Slightly newer vans should be in Travellers Autobarn’s future plans. And unofficially, they are, as the company told me it plans on updating the vans every few years.

Because these are rental vehicles, Travellers Autobarn does not allow pets. So if you’re a pup parent, you will need to make arrangements for when you’re away.

Itineraries

a webpage showing Travellers Autobarn Kuga Campervan itinerary

For a vehicle rental service, it’s cool that Travellers also provides itineraries for those looking for more structure and trip ideas. This takes them up a level in my mind from just a rental service to more of a campervan and adventure company.

a webpage describing a week-long Travellers Autobarn Kuga Campervan itinerary

It even designs itineraries around specific activities, like climbing and winter sports.

I followed one of its itineraries as I tested the campervan. And while I loved the stops, national and state park recommendations, and pace, I do wish a few more details were included.

Things like two or three recommended options of where to stay, maybe a few “locals’ tips,” and a labeled estimated driving time for each day would be helpful additions.

Limited Pick-Up Locations

If you visit Travellers’ website, the first thing you’ll probably notice is its extensive, nationwide itineraries.

We’re talking Seattle, Los Angeles, Lake Tahoe, Denver, Miami. The contiguous U.S. is your oyster (kind of). However, Travellers’ home bases for the brand new Kuga Campervans are only in L.A. and San Francisco, California, and Las Vegas, Nevada.

This is in addition to Travellers’ home stomping ground of Australia and New Zealand .

So, if you are super set on renting a campervan from these folks, you’ll want to factor travel to those locales in.

I will add that Travellers Autobarn is expanding to home bases in Denver and Seattle this year. So hopefully, you won’t have to wait long to get more options near you!

Final Thoughts

I traveled over 1,000 miles around and across California, hit up four National Parks, and a half dozen state parks as well. The van was fairly easy to drive, the interior living space functioned really well, and there was room for gear.

Short of not quite feeling like home (though this rental was better than some other rental “lodgings” I’ve experienced), this van delivered. It gave me comfort, convenience, and access to outdoor spaces.

And given everything that was included, the price is a huge positive that you really can’t turn down. I’d consider renting from Travellers Autobarn again, unless I catch myself buying and building out my own van first.

Why Rent a Camper Van?

Renting a camper van can provide an elevated road trip experience by pairing some of the comforts of home with the freedom of the open road.

With a camper van, you’ll have everything you need with you including a bed, kitchen, indoor seating space, and in some cases, even a bathroom. There’s no need to set up camp and pitch a tent every night, so you’ll have the flexibility to camp in more places and will be able to move around more easily.

Plus, depending on where you want to travel, daily rental fees may be cheaper than a hotel room, and you can also save by cooking your own meals since most rental camper vans come with a sink, cooking equipment, fridge (or at least a cooler), and a stove.

Many people also rent a camper van to give van life a try before diving in and committing to buying a van themselves. It’s also a great way to test out a certain type of camper van model and layout to see if it’s the right fit for you.

Considerations for Renting a Campervan

With the growing popularity of van life, there are a growing number of camper van rental companies out there offering campervan rentals of all types for all budgets. That means you’ve got a good chance of finding a campervan rental at the right price for you.

Base pricing generally includes a certain number of daily miles (usually starting at 100 miles/day included, sometimes more) with an additional cost per mile if you go over.

Camper van rental companies often provide basics like bedding, camp chairs, a camp table, and cooking supplies although this varies and may not be included in some of the more budget campervan rentals. Most camper van rental companies also offer add-ons for an extra fee such as portable toilets, rooftop tents, and bike racks.

Be aware that you may need to pay a deposit and cleaning fee in addition to the rental fee, so be sure to read the company’s FAQs or discuss this with them before booking.

Seating & Sleeping Space

You’ll want to make sure the rental camper van you’re looking at can safely seat and sleep the number of people that you’ll be road tripping with. For example, some campervans have bench seating in the back, but these seats don’t always have seatbelts and aren’t meant to be used while driving.

Some campervan rentals offer a rooftop tent in addition to indoor sleeping space so you can have two separate sleeping areas. And some rental companies offer an add-on camping tent you can pitch if you need more sleeping space as well.

Read next: See the Best Campervan Layouts for Families to get some ideas on how to comfortably fit everyone.

Some camper van rental companies include a variety of amenities in their rental fee, and some offer them as add-ons for an additional fee . Make sure you’re clear on what’s included in the price so you can plan accordingly.

From a fully stocked kitchen with a stove, cookware, and dishes to camp chairs, an outdoor table, and bedding, some camper van rentals come with all the amenities you need to cook and relax on your road trip.

On the other hand, some budget rental campervans are a little more bare bones so you’ll need to bring camping, cooking, and sleeping supplies with you.

You generally pay for what you get, so if you need the convenience of having all the amenities supplied (for example, if you’re flying to your destination and you don’t want to deal with bringing everything with you), then you’ll want to look for a campervan rental company who provides everything you need.

If you’ll be picking up a camper van near home and can load it up with everything you need for your trip, you can likely save some money by bringing your own gear.

Read next: For a full list of recommendations with photos and descriptions, check out my Van Life Essentials Guide .

Bathroom Facilities

Some camper van rentals come complete with a shower and toilet (usually a porta potty), and some don’t. If a bathroom is a must for you, make sure this is something you look for when searching for rentals, but be aware you’ll likely pay a little more as well.

If you plan to camp at campgrounds where bathrooms and showers are readily available, you can likely go without these luxuries and save some money. And if you plan on finding free campsites without facilities, you can likely get by with a portable shower and portable toilet system if you don’t mind roughing it a little.

We’ve noticed that most camper van rental companies will allow dogs for an additional fee , although there is one company on our list below that lets dogs join the adventure for free, and there are a few who don’t allow them at all.

Be sure to look into this before booking if you plan on road tripping with your dog .

Age Requirements

You must be at least 21 years old to rent an RV or camper van in the US .

Many campervan rental companies charge an additional fee for drivers who are under the age of 25 due to additional insurance costs.

When looking into renting a camper van, you’ll want to look into insurance requirements and pricing as well. Some camper van rental companies include insurance in their daily rates, while some add on an additional daily fee for insurance .

Most camper van rental companies do not allow you to be covered by your personal auto policy or credit card for campervan rentals . This is because most basic auto policies do not cover campervans that are classified as Class B RVs. Be sure to check with your insurance company prior to booking a campervan rental and ask specifically if your policy includes Class B RV coverage.

One Way Campervan Rentals

Depending on your road trip plans, you may want to start in one location and end in another to make the most of your time and avoid backtracking. If that’s the case, check with the campervan rental company to see if they charge an additional fee for one-way rentals.

In some cases, we’ve seen rental companies offer discounts on certain one way routes when they need a van transported from one location to another – that’s something to look out for as well.

Peer-to-Peer Camper Van Rentals

With the rising popularity of van life, there are now a handful of peer-to-peer campervan rental companies where people rent out their own campervans – kind of like Airbnb but for camper van rentals. This allows owners to earn extra income by renting out their campervans when they’re not using them, and it gives travelers the chance to pick from a variety of campervan models, layouts, and interior designs.

These peer-to-peer campervan rental sites allow you to easily search for campervans available in your area or in the area you plan on traveling to.

Peer-to-peer camper van rental companies you’ll find on our complete list below include Outdoorsy and GoCamp . The rest of the companies on our list are all camper van rental companies that own a fleet of converted campervans.

How Much Does a Camper Van Rental Cost?

Camper van rentals can cost anywhere from $33 per day to upwards of $500 per day . Those rates often don’t include insurance or additional amenities you may want for your road trip. But the good news is, there are budget camper van rentals available if that’s what you’re looking for.

A few budget-friendly camper van rental companies you’ll find on our list below include:

CamperVanGuy will outfit you with the van and gear if starting your trip in the Los Angeles area.

Thanks, Jody! We weren’t aware of CamperVanGuy, looks like a neat company for those starting in LA! Thanks for posting.

Wow I didn’t know there were so many good options! I’m hoping to do a US Road trip sometime next year, and can’t wait to explore a bit more of my own country

Check out Simple Campers in the SF Bay Area for camper vans that offer a variety of amenities. Including, unlimited mileage, one way rentals, pop tops, wifi, and more.

Thanks for the tip, Mav!

A great campervan alternative we found is Pacific Overlander (www.pacificoverlander.com). Their vehicles are totally tricked out and got us through the southwest without having to think about campsite reservations at all. Opened up a whole new way to do our road trips. Highly recommended!

Great to hear! Thanks for the rec!

Great post, Kim! Thanks for sharing. Looks like you might need a bay area company on this list 😉 I recently launched Outervan, a handcrafted campervan rental company.

Hey Lindsey! Thanks so much for reaching out. Drop me an email @ [email protected] with more details about Outervan.

your idea for adventure in campervan is great. campervan is famous for long road trip with other drinking and eating services. i really like this because you talk about adventure.

This is to say that it was really-really well and truly nice to read such kind of posts. You have to say that it should be continue to posts the blogs like this. Thanks

I am looking to rent for a minimum of 6 months; do you know which companies may provide the best rates for More long term ventures? I am primarily concerned with finding comfort at a low price. LOst camper appears to Ben a good option. Was wondering if you knew of any companies specifically geared towards this end.

Many campervan and RV rental companies will offer discounts for long-term rentals. I recommend reaching out to some companies and asking what discounts they can offer you for a 6+ month rental.

Anything in colorado springs?

Not entirely sure – I’d recommend doing a google search or trying Outdoorsy. There are definitely campervan rental companies elsewhere in Colorado including Denver if you aren’t able to find anything in Colorado Springs. Good luck!

Anything in St. Louis?

Hmmm… not sure!

Would like to take aroad trip in April 2021 from Texas to Las Vegas, need help in finding a company to rent camper van in my area

I recommend doing a quick google search for campervans in your area to see what comes up!

Any suggestion for area of Boston?

Not sure about the Boston area. A quick Google search might turn up something!

Great article, thanks for all these recommendations!!

Travellers Autobarn in Los Angeles,Las Vegas, and Bay Area! Unlimited miles included!

I’m trying to find a one way Class B rental starting in either Los Angeles or Phoenix and ending up near Glacier National Park in Montana – having a hard time finding a company that has a drop off point near Glacier

Nee to this Camper Van life! Intrigued and ready to take to the next level. Can someone recommend a good place to start as a beginner? I would love to learn, and be aware of “I wish I woulda known?” questions. Lucy!

Hi Lucy – we have a ton of resources and blog posts on Van Life how-tos. Check out our Van Life Course homepage . Our Van Life 101 guide also answers a lot of questions for people just starting out.

Great list but you HAVE to not forget the South and specifically sCAMPervan in Atlanta, Georgia and Asheville, North Carolina. What an original and unique brand and collection of vans to rent loaded with all the goods and necessities as well as rooftop tents. scampervan.com

Thanks for that tip, Jonathan, we’ll look into adding them!

Hello! I’m flying into Reno and I’m looking for a camper van such as these, anyone know of a location near Reno/Lake Tahoe? Thanks, much appreciated ☺️

Vancation.com has 3 or 4 campervan rentals in Reno!

Looking to rent a camper van to travel from around Dallas Texas to Southern Florida. Any recommendations?

Hmm, not familiar with the Dallas area. Maybe someone else can chime in!

I have a Thor Tellaro pop top pro master class b. I live in Idaho. I am hoping to rent it out for winter (late Fall to early Spring) in the Southwest USA.

How might I find a company to manage the rental for me?

Check out the company Outdoorsy

Looking for a Campervan like VW, Dodge or Chevy for 2 adults & 1 baby. Pick up and return should be Los Angeles. Any reccommandations?

Would it be cheapest to rent a cargo van from Hertz, Avis, Enterprise, or some other company for a few weeks and turn it into a temporary camper?

You can always buy an inflatable mattress, manual pump, camping stove, styrofoam cooler, cheap pillow, and maybe some cheap black out material that you can tape to the windows at night.

When done, you can mail the camping stove (minus the fuel), mattress, the pump, and tape back to your residence.

Hi Rob, I think many people like the ease & luxuries that come with renting an already built-out van, but your idea is definitely a possibility. Another option to save money is to look at one-way campervan relocations – they are usually last minute and you have to find your way home, but one of our team members has traveled this way before and loved it.

Don’t forget vancation.com, the newest campervan rental marketplace. Zero owner service fees if you join early and the best feature set to manage your listing.

Thanks for the tip!

Thanks! Appreciate the research and information on van rentals that covers a good chunk of the country

It’s nice to see these resources are available, but there are none for where I live. Not much in the way for Missouri I guess, and having lived here 95% of my life so far, I can say that the landscape is beautiful here (the people not so much lol). Maybe someday there will be a van rental place available here, but I’m not going to hold my breath.

I’d recommend checking out Outdoorsy, RV Share, or Campanda since those are all rentals by owner and can be located anywhere in the US (like Airbnb for van rentals). Best of luck!

I’m sad to see Dallas/Ft Worth area not served on your list. Any ideas? Thanks,

Hi Melissa, I’m unfamiliar with any rental companies in that area, but I’d recommend checking out Outdoorsy, RV Share, or Campanda since those are all rentals by owner and can be located anywhere in the US (like Airbnb for van rentals). Best of luck!

The best resource. Thank you.

Glad you found it helpful, Eugene!

So stoked to have found your site! You rock!

Thanks Stacy!!

Wow you missed Florida Oldscool Campers. Our family loved our trip!

Thanks for the recommendation – we’ll have to check them out!

Hi Sonya! Keys Westys has the largest inventory of Westfalias on the East Coast, including Florida!

This is a great resource, thank you! Is appears that “Escape’ is the only company that operates one-way small camper vans coast to coast — in my case, I need northeast to northwest? Is that true as far as you know? Thank you.

Hi Pam, glad you found this helpful! We’ve never personally used these rental companies (all of our team owns campervans) so I can’t speak to the one-way coast-to-coast rentals, unfortunately. Good luck with your search!

You should add Keys Westys VW Camper Van Rental in the Florida Keys to this article! Keys Westys offers a fleet of vintage and classic VW Westaflia “Westys” for rent for adventures up and down the iconic 113-mile Overseas Highway. The iconic, “instagrammable” pop-top campers sleep four people on two levels, have on-board refrigerators and even slide-out camping air conditioners to deliver the glam to this level of glamping! Vintage ‘Westys’ of Keys Westys include cute models like the 1971 Westy “Hey Mickey” and the 1978 Westy “Key Lime Pie” to the 1980 Westy “Cotton Candy” and 1982 Westy “Cookie Monster”. Several are spotlighted on the Keys Westys website, as well as fan sites online. Keys Westys also offers several more modern VW Eurovan Westfalias, in a rainbow of colors, also sporting refrigerators and slide-out camping air conditioners. Each rental also includes a linens bin of sheets, towels, pillows and pillow cases for four persons – as well as a camping bin of incidentals for cooking and camping, including cutlery, plates, cups and more. Keys Westys’ rental rates start at $130 per day, and renters can add on things like inflatable paddle boards, camp sites at several award-winning state parks from the company’s inventory of its self-guided tour and more. Airport pick up and drop off to Keys Westys’ Islamorada location is also available. And, if you are driving down to pick up your Westy, you can leave your car at their gated facility while you adventure – at no additional charge. Keys Westys has a rich history in the Keys, and offers a broad range of information to plan your Florida Keys adventure, including snorkeling, to nature trails, “Campgrounds We Love” and more. Keys Westys can be found online or be reached at 786-326-6763.

Thanks for the info, Michelle!

Wanted to say thanks for featuring Boho Camper Vans as one of your go-to camper van companies! We’re grateful!

Just wanted to say that things have changed a lot for us in the past couple of years, and we’re currently running a fleet of twelve 2021-2022 Promasters (we found those old Econolines were just a liiiiiittle too tight). Our designs have evolved and our vans have grown but we’ve maintained that same “cabin on wheels” kind of feel.

Hi Ryan, thanks for letting us know! Do you have any updated photos and a blurb that we can update our post with? Please email me at contact[at] bearfoottheory.com

Wandervans is also a great option for affordable van rentals or builds. Locations in Boise, Spokane/CDA, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, Vegas, Phoenix, and Duluth. Great article, thanks for getting all of these options out there!

The Best VW Camper Van Rentals Across the USA

Explore closer to home without going full #Vanlife in a universally loved bit of German engineering, Volkswagen

The Best VW Camper Van Rentals Across the USA

Field Mag Editors

Co-written by Geoff Nudelman

When many think of a “camper van” they typically imagine a tricked out Mercedes Sprinter or Ford Transit van with all the bells and whistles, plus space for all of that weekend gear—and likely a very Good Dog, too.

But there’s a quirkier, more simple side to living the road life, and it’s been “a thing” loooong before #vanlife ever became one. We’re talking about the veritable Volkswagen van (or bus), of course. No matter the format—bus, Westfalia, or Vanagon—there’s a dedicated community of enthusiasts, and rental services, keeping the tradition alive since the 1940s.

Today, there are no shortage of VW camper van rental companies in every corner of the US offering a perfectly modest, low-speed approach to van camping for those not quite ready for the reality of full time #vanlife . As one of our featured van’s owners, Duke Geren, puts it: “These vehicles were never meant to go fast. If you’re doing 400, 500, 600 miles a day, you’re missing the point.”

Scroll on for our top picks of VW camper vans to rent near you. And yes, they are all named. So read on and don't forget Duke's wise words.

A Brief History of the VW Camper Van

In the begining, Volkswagen originally had two models—the appropriately named Type 1 and Type 2. The first, Type 1, is what we commonly and fondly call the Beetle. Type 2 is the microbus so popular with hippies from the 60s and campers of today (as shown in this very article lead image). Two models of the type two—the Combi, short for “combined-use vehicle", and Splittie, named for its split windshield—went into production on March 8, 1950.

Before long, many VW van owners and outdoor enthusiasts started converting their Type 2’s into camper vans. Soon after bringing the first Type 2 vans to market, VW joined forces with a company called Westfalia to produce camper van conversion kits, originally called the Camping Box. These camper van conversion kits essentially turned a VW van into a tiny home on wheels.

The first VW Westfalia campers made it to U.S. shores in 1956 and remained popular until production of the VW camper van was halted on December 31, 2013. Though with the recent resurgence in popularity, it's no surprise rumor has it that VW is working on an electric version due to make its appearance in late 2022.

Where to Find VW Camper Van Rentals

Below, duh! Jokes aside, there are numerous VW camper van rental companies around North America and beyond. Some are private companies, while others are booking sites similar to accommodation booking sites that represent various companies. You can also find some sites that only rent out VW camper vans.

Smaller, independent companies will likely require you to collect and return the camper in the area where they are based—perfect for those excitedly typying “camper van rental near me" into google. Larger companies might have multiple depots throughout a region or around the country. This is great if you don’t plan on starting and ending your journey in the same place.

Vintage vehicle rental is a niche market with a limited number of vehicles available. While you could come across a great deal for a spontaneous road trip or camping trip, you will need to book a VW camper far ahead of time if you plan on going on an adventure during busier times. If you are specifically looking for a vintage VW camper, try searching: “vintage VW camper van rental” or “VW camper van vintage.” wink wink

VW-Camper-Van-Alaska-Poly

Model: 1986 Westfalia Synchro

Company: trickster trips (anchorage).

Named for Polychrome Pass inside Denali National Park , Poly has a self-described “beefy” heater, which stands up to the frigid mettle of the 49th state. She’s equipped with 4WD and has a long history of cruising Alaska through prior ownership and rental use. Where will you take her next?

VW-Camper-Vans-Washington-Wolf-Lake

Model: 1985 Westfalia Weekender

Company: black forest westfalias (seattle).

Some owners have built more utility and off-road capability into their vans. “It's really quite amazing where these 2WDs can go with a few upgrades,” says Mike Kane, owner of Black Forest Westfalias. Wolf was purchased in 2015 from a painter and went through a complete overhaul—lift and rebuild with an awning and full cooking setup included. This is the van that gets into those nooks and crannies Sprinter vans can only dream about.

VW-Camper-Van-Oregon-Maupin-Fire

Model: 1989 Vanagon

Company: go camp camper vans (portland & beyond).

Go Camp is a relatively new company, taking on a more regional approach to the “ Airbnb ” shared rental model. For example, Maupin is actually owned by enthusiast Duke Geren (see above) and is rented to adventurers in the Portland area for short periods. In his van, he added a variety of creature comforts including interior LED lighting and Bluetooth audio capabilities. As their site says, the van came from the airline industry, so it’s built to serve.

VW-Camper-Vans-California-Koda

Model: 1990 Wesfalia

Company: outwesty (tahoe city).

This simple van arrived at Outwesty with 270,000 miles on the clock and faded paint. The company completely stripped it, installed a new engine, transmission, cooling system, and an array of other mechanical components before wrapping adding a fresh coat of silver. She’s known for having “a lot of soul” and Outwesty is proud of the retrofitting they’ve done, saying that “perhaps this is how Westfalia should have done it from the beginning.” We can't argue with that.

VW-Camper-Vans-Utah-Splittie

Model: 1966 Bus T1 “Splittie”

Company: retro vws (hurricane).

Early-era VW buses have enjoyed a major rise in value over the last few years, which makes it all the more amazing that this WWII fighter plane inspired, lifted, split-window (hence the nickname) van is available for daily rental. VW only made the split-window van from 1950-67 and they become harder to find each year. If the military paint is a little too loud for your taste, they have more traditional options in orange and green, too.

VW-Camper-Van-Minnesota-Cruisin-Rex

Model: 1991 Westfalia

Company: vango rental (st. paul).

Cruisin’ Rex has a history of helping others. She was once rented by a vet and her 14-year-old shepherd dog. The vet made an extra effort to build a proper ramp to help her dog into and out of the van for a final trip north, so it's dog friendly. Though with only a bare basic buildout, this van is meant more for minimalist car campers than those wanting a rig to be the star of the show. Aka look elsewhere for that perfect sparkle light, "I woke up here" photo opp.

VW-Camper-Van-Northeast-Vintage-Orange

Model: 1990 Westfalia

Company: vintage van adventures (brunswick).

Currently on a nine-week adventure through Maine with an artist/journalist, this automatic (read: rare) van has Floridian roots, but its heart is in the Pine Tree State. The rental company’s owner bought it from a local VW “guru” who rebuilds and sends engines for these beasts all over the world. The Westfalia has around 180,000 miles in total and a recently updated interior with a two-burner stove, 10-gallon sink, and two 6’ x 4’ beds. New England Van Life at its purist.

VW-Camper-Van-Northeast-Elvis

Massachusetts

Model: 1972 to 1985 westfalia & vanagon, company: outdoorsy.

If you’re in the Boston area, you’ve got a few different options, all within driving distance. For the traditional set, go for a 1980 Vanagon with sweet modern walnut cabinetry and 2WD badging on the side. Want something a little different? There’s a 1979 Westfalia with a … “floral” print … and a sink installed behind the driver’s seat. This one is all custom and the ingenuity is almost worth the price of admission itself.

VW-Camper-Van-Flordia-Jasmine

Model: 1978 Westfalia

Company: florida oldscool campers (tampa/st. petersburg).

VW rentals are hard to find in the Southeastern US, which makes this company’s lineup—which includes the very lovely Jasmine, above—all the more special. This late 70s edition originally came from Asheville, NC and sports a loud green & yellow plaid interior that's perfectly matched by the “hum” of the engine, which runs “a little louder than other buses,” according to the company. There are likely few better ways to cruise down Highway 1 through the Keys.

VW-Camper-Vans-Hawaii-Cocoon

Model: 1971 Van

Company: hawaii surf campers (o’ahu).

This bright van had a long life as a haole before being brought to O’ahu by Hawaii Surf Campers (HSC) in January. Once on the island, the company (which has a separate conversion business for those already with a van) cleaned up the interior, lightened up the exterior green paint, and made several other adjustments that are pretty standard when getting an early '70s Bus seaworthy—err roadworthy—again. The van has relatively low wear given Hawaii’s recent travel restrictions and HSC hopes to get her back on the road soon.

Now that you've browsed the listings and decided what you like and don't like, we'll dig into a few more broad but important questions on the mind of many looking for a VW camper van in the USA or abroad.

Are VW camper vans worth the money?

Good question. And a tough one to answer, as "worth" is entirely subjective when it comes to dealing with older vehicles. Doing a road trip or camping trip in a VW camper van is all about the journey, the adventure, really. Because there are a limited number of VW camper vans available for rent, a well-maintained van could cost the same (if not slightly more) than a hotel room. Still, renting a camper van gives you the freedom and flexibility to make your home for the night wherever you find yourself on the road.

Keep in mind that, due to age and the boxy shape of classic VW camper vans, they have a lower gas mileage than more modern vehicles. Most VW busses’ gas mileage is around 15 to 20 miles per gallon. This will need to be calculated into your daily budget.

Because most VW camper vans sleep four people (snuggly), there are more people to split the cost–and make memories in these unique and popular vans.

The difference between a camper van and a motor home

Both camper vans and motor homes are classified as RV’s (recreational vehicles—bet you didn't realize that's what RV stood for). This term refers to a motorized vehicle that is used for camping, and other general exploration.

Camper vans are generally smaller than motor homes. This could mean that you need to crouch down when moving around inside. However, some campers have been modified with roofs that pop up to provide more height and extra headroom while you are parked.

One of the significant differences between a camper van and a motor home is the absence of shower and toilet facilities in a Volkswagen camper van.

Because they are smaller, camper vans may feel a bit cramped, especially if you are a group of adults traveling together. But they can often go where RV's can't. Camper vans can sleep between two and four people on one or two double beds, while motor homes can accommodate a combination of single and double beds for between two and six persons, or more. Keep in mind that even the best VW camper vans will have less space than the smallest motorhomes. That means your sleeping space will double as a kitchen and lounge area. Still, some have roof racks or pop tops where you can store some of your gear or sleep at night.

Motor homes usually have a long wheelbase. While this gives you more room, it also means you are likely to pay higher toll fees and ferry charges, not to mention find a worse turning radius and off-road terrain more difficult to traverse.

Can you rent a VW bus?

Yes, c'mon. Scroll back above! But fr, you don’t need to buy this iconic camper van to go on an adventure in one. Instead, you can rent a VW bus and take to the road. Since Volkswagen vans are no longer produced, there is a limited amount available for rent. Still, numerous companies across the U.S. rent out VW camper vans for outdoor enthusiasts and adventurers to take on the road.

Many VW campervans (especially those produced before 1973) have manual transmissions (aka stick shift), and rental companies may require the driver to have experience driving this type of vehicle.

These Volkswagen vans are considered to be vintage vehicles that require considerable amounts of maintenance (not to mention the initial restoration). For this reason, many rental companies have strict limits on the number of miles that you can drive each day. In some cases, the rental company may also set a limit on continuous drive time.

Volkswagen campervan rental companies will likely require you to have full cover on your current car insurance. They may also request a security deposit and place a hold on your credit card to cover any damages that may occur to this iconic camper van.

How much does it cost to rent a Volkswagen camper?

Renting a VW camper could cost anywhere between $130 and $350 per night. Many van rental companies have a minimum rental period – usually 3 nights. Some companies offer discounted rates for longer rentals. You may also find that rates change according to season, similar to hotel rates.

Some camper van rental companies may charge an additional relocation fee if you drop the van off at a different depot from where you collected it. Planning your route to collect and drop off your rented Volkswagen camper van at the same depot can save you from paying a relocation fee.

Similarly, there may be extra fees involved if you collect or return your rented van on a Sunday. You may also need to pay a cleaning fee, so check the fine print carefully before booking your VW campervan.

You may need to pay for insurance or risk a high excess in the event of an accident. This may be covered under your current insurance, so be sure to check before you head out.

Remember that you will need to pay local and state taxes on your Volkswagen campervan hire. This will be calculated upon checkout (or where you enter your payment details if you are renting a van online).

Frequently asked questions

How does kayak find such low rental car prices.

KAYAK compares rental car prices from all major car rental companies such as Thrifty, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, Payless and more to find you the best deal.

How do I find the best car rental deals on KAYAK?

A simple rental car search at https://www.kayak.com/cars scans for prices on hundreds of travel sites in seconds. We gather car rental deals from across the web and put them in one place. Then on the search results page you can use various filters to compare your options for your preferred rental car type and easily choose the best car rental deal from all of the deals coming straight from the travel sites to your screen, with no extra fee from KAYAK.

What is special about comparing rental car deals on KAYAK?

Looking for the lowest price? We can make that happen. Our car rental price sort gives you quick access to the cheapest and/or the most expensive deals—it’s your trip, so it’s up to you. Sometimes, the same rental car deal will be available on several provider sites. All of these providers are made visible for you to choose from, but we highlight one main car rental provider based on things like customer popularity or ratings.

What kind of cars can I rent on KAYAK?

On KAYAK you can find deals on all types of rental cars including small, medium, large, SUV, van, luxury, pickup truck, convertible and commercial vehicles.

What do I need to know before booking a car rental?

Renting a car can be overwhelming, especially if it’s your first time or you’re renting in a new country. Finding the right price, understanding the add-ons and staying up to date with policy changes can be a challenge. That’s why KAYAK has produced the ultimate guide to renting a car to help you cut though the jargon and make the right choice for your rental car. Find tips and insights for how to book your rental, what car rental insurance you’ll need, how to deal with a car rental agency and what extra fees to expect (and avoid!).

What is the minimum age to rent a car?

The minimum legal age to rent a car depends on the country where you’re renting. In the USA and Canada, drivers must typically be at least 21. However, some states and provinces allow drivers as young as 18 years old to rent a car. In Europe and Asia, the minimum age varies between 18 to 21 years old but some agencies might require drivers to be at least 25. Keep in mind that most agencies add daily fees for renters below 25 years old.

Can I return a rental car to a different location?

You want to pick up a car rental in one city and drop it off in another location? We can arrange that for you. When performing a car rental search on KAYAK, simply select the option "Different drop-off". You'll then be able to enter both your desired pick-up and drop-off locations. Most car rental agencies call this option a "one-way rental" and charge a return fee.

Can new drivers rent a car?

New driver policies vary for each car rental agency. While some require renters to hold a driver’s license for a minimum of 1 year, others only ask for a valid driver’s license for the duration of the rental period. We recommend new drivers to confirm the requirements directly with the rental agency.

Can I rent a car without a credit card?

Renting a car without a credit card is less common but not impossible. Many agencies allow debit card car rentals from airport locations as long as you provide proof of return travel. Be aware that the agency might run a credit check on you and will most likely place an authorized hold on your account as a security deposit. If you plan on paying with a debit card, it’s always a good idea to check the conditions with the rental agency before booking.

Can I drive cross country in a rental car?

In the USA, it's typically not an issue to drive across state lines or to cross the border to Canada. However, you'll most likely pay an extra insurance fee if you want to travel to Mexico. Similar rules apply to Europe, as you'll need to cover a cross-border fee if you want to cross from one country to another. Failing to do so will most likely invalidate your car rental insurance. Crossing borders in Africa and Asia is generally more difficult and additional border documentation is necessary. We recommend always informing the rental agency about your planned itinerary.

Is it cheaper to rent a car at the airport or off-site?

You will generally find the best deals if you select an off-site airport location. Airport car rental agencies offer a very convenient option for renters who want to pick up a car directly on-site. However, as demand is often higher, prices also tend to get slightly more expensive. Some off-site rental agencies offer shuttle service from the airport.

Search cheap rental cars with KAYAK. Search for the cheapest rental car deal for all major destinations around the world . KAYAK searches different travel sites to help you find and book the rental car deal that suits you best.

KAYAK also helps you find the right hotels and train and bus deals for your needs.

How does the bond/excess on a rental vehicles work?

When it comes to security bond options it can get quickly very confusing…so let’s talk about it and provide as much information as we can for you.

Basically, the security bond is how much you need to have available on your Visa/Mastercard credit card (please note that we don’t accept cash cards) at the time you hire your vehicle.  We will pre-authorise this amount, which means placing a hold on the funds for approximately 14 days, we do not actually deduct the funds at this time.

In the event your vehicle or third-party property is damaged, the amount of the security bond will be deducted from your credit card account and you will need to pre-authorise a 2 nd  security bond before you continue with your hire.

You can choose different options to reduce the amount of your security bond as outlined below.

IMPORTANT:  In the event any damage is caused to your vehicle or third-party property by you breaching our Terms and Conditions or the damage is caused due to one of the Exclusions listed below, the amount that is payable by you could be in excess of the security bond that you have chosen.

Do I need to carry spare parts for the car?

You might want to carry a couple of hoses or belts, but unless you are mechanically minded these won’t do you any good. Always carry plenty of spare water – especially if you are planning to travel in Western Australia or the Northern Territory!

All our vehicles come with 24 hour road side assistance. On top of this, you can count on the generosity of the Australians to help you out of a bind.

Is it legal for people who are not Australian residents to own a car?

There is no problem for visitors to Australia to own a car. You still need to follow the Australia road rules and we highly recommend an international driving license if you are planning to buy a car…

Do I need a special license?

You may travel with a valid international drivers license, or any full, valid license from your country of residence. A translation of your national drivers license may be required.

How many people can fit in each vehicle?

Seat belts are mandatory in Australia. The number of passengers depends on the number of seat belts – which depends on the vehicle. Driving/riding in a car without a seatbelt or driving with more passengers than seatbelts each result in on the spot fines.

Where can I find all the information I need and how can I contact Travellers Autobarn?
