What our clients say

It was a fantastic and scenic boat trip. The boat was very clean and had a great sound system for music. Captain Mario was so familiar with the area and provided suggestions on unique and hidden treasures. The trip would not have been the best without Mario!

We had 20 people on vacation for a vow renewal and 2 boat trips planned. We did Capri and then Positano. Mario and Luigi were the Captains of the amazing boats that showed up at the doc. 10 people on each boat and there was plenty of room to layout on the front and enjoy the view. Both Mario and Luigi have a very deep knowledge of the history of the Italy and were able answer all our questions. They took us to all the best swimming places where you can see the fish swimming with you and the bottom of the sea. They found the perfect spot for us to chill and tie up the two boats to have lunch. The entire day was beyond perfect. I would highly recommend them if you are in the area.

Mamma Mia Boat Tours was the best time ever. Luigi is a great Captain and was so informative with everything. He was the perfect host on the boat with his service and expertise at all times. He sincerely made every effort to make our day at sea a memorable one. This was my second time using Mamma Mia Boat tours and highly recommend it to anyone wanting to avoid the crowds and have a personal guide to see the wonderful sights of Capri, and the Amalfi coast by boat. He will Taylor your day to all your needs. Simply the best! Thank you Luigi once again for a wonderful time. Rocco and the boys are still talking about their day at sea with you!

The full day boat tour with Mario is definitely the most memorable part of our 10-day Italy trip. Mario, the skipper, showed up with a beautiful/luxurious boat early in the morning and took 9 of us on a journey to remember forever! We had a blast on the boat while touring Amalfi Coast and Island of Capri. The view of the coastline to the blue Mediterranean sea to the crystal clear/clean water to swim in, it was just the perfect trip! Mario also stopped at the picturesque spots for us to take pictures and group pictures. Only one word to describe the entire experience - Wow!!! What an incredible experience and worth every penny spent! Highly recommended and would use Mama Mia again the next time I am visiting the area.

Thank you Ciao Andiamo for arranging this day for us! Carmine and Luigi went above and beyond expectations to provide an unforgettable day around the Amalfi coast and Capri. They took their time and showed us the most amazing sights. Our kids, ages 22, 18 and 14 said it was the favorite day of our trip!

#4 From Sorrento: Full-Day Boat Cruise to Capri

  • Departure Time : Not Listed
  • Duration : 7 hours (approx.)
  • Includes : small group tour, professional skipper, knowledgeable guide, Sorrento coast, Isle of Capri coast and mainland tour

After being picked up at your hotel, you’ll head to Piano di Sorrento where your cruise boat and skipper await. You’ll head off first into open water and along the Sorrentine coast. Marina Grande, an ancient fishing village, as well as the ruins of a Roman villa are visible, as is the waterfall.

Naples, Italy Travel Guide

Even though Naples is the 3 rd -largest city in Italy, it tends to not get the same tourist attention as say, Rome or Florence. However, there are many reasons to add Naples, or Napoli in Italian, to your list of next vacation spots.

Naples has many historic attractions that rival those in larger Italian cities and because of fewer tourist crowds, many historic locations, as well as accommodations and restaurants, are not so busy.

If you’re looking for a truly Italian experience, you don’t want to skip out on Naples. It’s unique in many ways and the only way to experience is it with feet on the ground with a well-planned trip. Here’s how!

Airports & Entry

While there is an airport in Naples, it tends to only receive flights from Italy or nearby European locations. Most likely, if you air flying to Naples, your international flight will stop at a major hub in Europe and then head to the Aeroporto Capodichino. The Napoli International Airport usually doesn’t see flights coming from other continents, such as the Americas or Asia.

Naples is also serviced by many train lines and coach routes that originate up north. If you have the time, experiencing Rome and then taking a train through the Italian countryside to Naples is the ideal way to see the most while visiting Italy.

Planning Tips

Visiting different cities in Italy, and other hot spots like Paris and London provides vastly different experiences. This is why we love to travel, right? However, that also means that planning for a trip to Naples is unlike planning for other trips.

Tip #1: Bring Walking Shoes

Naples is a very “walkable” city. Many attractions are very close to accommodations and restaurants, or at least close to convenient transportation such as the subway or busses. However, while things look close together on a map, Naples has many hills. Some of them are tall, some steep, and some both.

When planning the next location to head to, be sure to ask someone nearby, or even an employee at a store or restaurant, what the walk is like. If it nearing the end of the day and you are already tired, you may want to grab a cab instead of walking.

Tip #2: Enjoy Authentic Neapolitan Pizza

Naples invented pizza. While you can order pizza at many restaurants around the city, you’ll want to find a restaurant that offers the real thing. For anyone to call their pizza authentic, there are rules about the ingredients they must use when making them. For an even better pizza experience in Naples, find a restaurant that cooks their pizzas in a wood-fired oven.

Tip #3: Don’t Forget the Beach

While there are many places to see and experience in Naples, from the historic district to the more modern areas, you might want to plan a day to enjoy the beach. The beach offers many seaside cafes and bars so there’s really no reason to leave the beach once you get there. This means it’s time to grab a towel, sit back under an umbrella, and enjoy a limoncello. What is limoncello ? It’s a lemon liqueur famous in southern Italy.

Tip #4: Plan for Several Tours

Which so much to see and do in Naples, it’s nearly impossible to create your own itinerary that will take you everywhere you’d like to go. Not only do pre-planned tours take you to all the hotspots, they can usually offer exclusive or priority access, not to mention the expertise of your guide if you choose a guided tour.

Tip #5: Explore the Surrounding Areas of Naples, Italy

Naples is pretty large considering only Rome and Florence are bigger in both size and population. However, you may want to go for a scenic drive to a winery just outside town or even go for a ride to a great overlook to see the city that isn’t within city limits.

You may also want to head out on the water. Many boats take visitors to the Island of Capri, with its many grottoes, as well as to the many other islands in the Bay of Naples. The bay here is central to commerce in southern Italy, but it also happens to be one of the most beautiful.

Restaurants & Eating Out

Since pizza was invented here, it’s only fitting that you try an authentic, Neapolitan pizza. Many restaurants serve pizza, but only authentic pizza is made to strict requirements, including the ingredients used. The international regulations for Neapolitan pizza are important for many pizzerias in Naples.

Pizza wasn’t the only food dish invented in Naples. The very first “plate” of eggplant parmesan was also served here. Both pizza and eggplant parmesan have become staples the world over, so why not try it where it began?

As Naples is a coastal city, it also means great seafood. You’ll find the freshest in the restaurants nearest the harbor or nearest the beach. Naples has it’s own beach-scene so if you’re craving seafood, that’s where you’ll find it.

Nightlife & Entertainment

If you’re looking for entertainment that isn’t a year-round thing, there are several times of year that are ideal for visiting Naples. During Christmas, there are hundreds of nativities set up nearly everywhere you go. Easter has parades down Via San Biaggio and other main streets.

There are many cities that are ideal if you are looking for a New Year’s Eve bash like no other. While Naples may not be able to compete with the likes of New York City, Sydney, or Paris you may want to give it a try. When in Italy, not even Rome can beat the New Year’s Eve celebrations that Naples offers both locals and visitors.

If you are looking for the nightlight and entertainment in Naples that you can enjoy any day of the week, any week of the year, there are many different scenes to experience. Naples is a diverse city when it comes to nightlife and you can find nearly anything you’re in the mood for.

The Bourbon Street Jazz Club is for visitors and locals alike. If you are a fan of great off-the-cuff jam sessions, you’ll want to stop by one night. The beach scene is Naples is as unique as the limoncello they are famous for.

Nabilah is a great stop just off the beach. It may be a bit hard to find as the entrance is down a very narrow and unassuming back alley, but you’ll know you’ve found it when you hear the casual tunes.

The Lanificio 25 is one place you just have to schedule into your nightlife adventures in Naples. It is built into a building that used to be an old wool factory. It definitely has that old-world vibe that Naples is famous for, but you’ll also be able to see, hear, and feel much of the culture of the area.

Every night at Lanificio 25 may be something different, so check their online schedule. Small, local bands often perform, and you might hear a DJ playing everything from metal to alternative. Up for an art show? Maybe a play? This is the place.

Getting Around

There is no shortage of ways to get around in Naples. However, the one way you don’t want to take is a rental car or other vehicle that you will be driving. The city is very hectic and many local drivers can be aggressive. Most visitors won’t be used to driving in the kind of traffic they have in Naples.

One of the best ways to get from place to place is just walking. This is especially true if you are seeing many attractions within the same district. Be sure to find out how many hills you may have to walk up before setting out though.

Within the city, you will also find a well-designed bus and subway system. These are often crowded but they make for an easy way to get from place to place. If heading out of the city, trains are the way to go.

In many cities, visitors are warned about not taking cabs. In Naples, however, they are an affordable way to get around and cabbies are very knowledgeable. They may be able to tell you what time the museum opens, the best restaurant for pizza in the area, and other things. Cabbies in Naples are usually very friendly, and fair when it comes to the meter.

Accommodations

There are accommodations and every possible level in Naples. If you are looking for a great place to stay long-term and need something inexpensive, hostels are a great choice. Some of the hostels here even offer laundry services or a kitchen you can use to prepare a meal or two, saving you some cash. Many even offer stays for groups or families. Two popular Naples hostels are the Hostel Mancini Naples and the Naples Experience.

On the other side of that, there are plenty of upscale hotels. They tend to be located in many areas around the city so you can find one nearest to your planned activities. The Grand Hotel Vesuvio is regarded as one of the best hotels in Naples. The Hotel Napoli is also popular. An upscale hotel may offer services such as concierge, spa, and others.

Most people visiting Naples are looking for accommodations somewhere between a hostel and a grand hotel. Naples is home to several chains of hotels. Not only does this give you a familiar feel if you are used to staying with them, but you can also use many of the reward programs that accommodation chains often offer. Ramada Naples and Holiday Inn Naples are favorable with visitors, offering free breakfasts, discounted attraction tickets, great locations, and even parking if you have your own vehicle.

Because Naples is situated on the coast, the summers can get very hot and humid. This definitely isn’t comfortable when walking around the city although most public transportation is air-conditioned. However, that same coastal location makes winters very mild. If you don’t mind a chilly morning or two, visiting Naples in the winter can mean smaller crowds and maybe even a cheaper room rate at your accommodation of choice.

Spring and Fall are the most popular times to travel to and visit Naples. The temps are usually very moderate and while a quick rain shower may spring up, for the most part, you will see sunny skies. Expect much larger crowds if traveling during these peak tourism times.

Attractions

There are places in Naples that you just can’t see anywhere else. For example, the National Archaeological Museum of Naples has many artifacts that have been recovered from Pompeii and surrounding areas. Some were even excavated from areas of Rome or Cinque Terre.

Just as with many other cities in Italy, the churches and their architecture are popular for visitors. Many are located within a small area in the historic district so planning a day to see them isn’t difficult. There are many guided tours of them, so you can learn more about their architecture, their history, and the legends surrounding them. The San Lorenzo Maggiore and the Duomo are two must-see churches in the area.

Every city has that main street where it seems everyone gathers, there’s a lot of shops and restaurants, and it’s the perfect place to see the true culture of the city. In Naples, it is Via San Biaggio. It is sometimes referred to as Spaccanapoli, the heart of Napoli, or Naples. You could spend an entire day here taking in the sights, sounds, and flavors of Naples.

Ready to Book Your Flight??

While being an Italian city inside and out, Naples also has its own personality. If you truly want to experience Italy, Naples should be on your must-see list. Of course, you’ll probably want to take a few tours of Rome to see all the history as well. And there’s no missing out on wine tasting tours in Florence. In Naples? It’s the food, the architecture, the music, the culture… and so much more!

We had the best boat tour from Sorrento to Capri for our honeymoon. Nello was an amazing skipper, he was so knowledgeable about the history of the islands, Capri and the coast of Sorrento. He made multiple tops at different caves and sightseeing locations for us to take pictures and explained the history of everywhere we stopped. He had multiple recommendations for places to check out in Capri and Sorrento and was so pleasant to spend the day with. They provided a bottle of Prosecco and snacks for us, as well.

Teresa was fantastic, she was so communicative from the beginning and helped to reschedule our boat day in advance because they knew our original day would be too windy/choppy water, and it ended being perfect. She also helped coordinate a pickup at the Marina Grande port where we were staying instead of where they were originally docked, which was very accommodating of them and we appreciated it.

I would highly recommend booking with Sunrise Sorrento, everyone is so professional and the entire tour was well done and flawless. We had the best day on the water and made our honeymoon so special. Thank you again to Nello and Teresa!

I love the Mery Rose and even more, I love the energetic, friendly people who crew this magnificent, completely updated boat. There is no better way to spend a hot summer day than to cruise from some gorgeous Amalfi Coast port to a tranquil cove or beach for a day of swimming and relaxing. A day at sea is the ultimate luxury and completely worth the expense. The captain, Nello, is young, adorable (a requirement of all Italian captains apparently), experienced and takes great pride in his boat and the Sorrento area where he was raised. He is capably supported by the personable and helpful Angelo on board, as well as by Teresa, who is a delight to work with when planning your day. And it is, your day. While they have many great itineraries, they are mere suggestions. Teresa and Nello want the day to be about what you as a guest enjoy. Snacks, drinks, and fresh fruit flow. Want ice cream? Like magic, the ice cream man arrives in a boat! Looking for some out-of-the-way lunch spot where they come get you in a dingy to take you to a local, family-run waterfront restaurant? Nello knows them all and you will feel like a rock star walking in. Speaking of that, spend the minimal extra fee for pick up and drop off at the small, private marina in Sorrento. Not only will you feel like Mick Jagger, you will feel even smarter as you will have no wait whatsoever, unlike all of the other boats bobbing around waiting to get in and out.

This was our sixth time on this boat and it is hands-down what brings us back to Italy during the crazy, busy summer. The best people. Impeccable service. The gorgeous locale. Nothing beats floating in the warm, clear blue water with the unforgettable view of the iconic Amalfi coastline from the Mery Rose.

Cherissie W.

Sunrise Sorrento is absolutely AMAZINGGGG!!! I highly recommend them! We booked the Meryrose yacht for a private day tour to Capri. From start to finish we had such an incredible time. Our skipper, Nello and captain, Angelo were so kind, professional, fun, and very knowledgeable about the island. Sunrise Sorrento is excellent with communication both when booking and during your time on the yacht. They have great recommendations on restaurants for lunch and activities to do. The iconic sites in Capri were breathtaking. The yacht included light refreshments and they catered to our allergies. During the boat ride, our friend got sea sick and they attended to her right away and were so kind. The yacht was very spacious and clean! Thank you SOOO MUCH Sunrise Sorrento for an amazing and incredible day that we will never forget!!! 😊❤️

Wow! What an amazing, fun & relaxing tour. The boat ride to Capri was filled with beautiful sites. Riding around Capri on the boat allowed us to see stunning & famous sites, including the Blue Grotto & Faraglioni Rocks. Our boat driver & tour guide was very knowledgeable & funny. We have just had such an amazing day touring Capri by boat. Our Captain, Luigi, was informative, helpful, entertaining and really good. We stopped at all the Caves - went into the Blue Grotto, amazing illumination, and many other caves. Loved our time in Capri itself. Augustus Garden beautiful with magnificent views, had the most incredibly food in Capri, walked down Knupps Way to get back to the marina, went swimming off the boat in the most gorgeous water… I could go on!! Absolutely recommend!

Dear guest, thank you for your beutiful review, feedback from our precious customers is always much apprecciated. We are glad you had a good time with us and we hope to welcome you again in the future. Best regards Agostino Longo

We had an amazing day on our Amalfi Coast trip. Captain Agostino and Marcus were just great fun and made our day very special. The boat is wonderful! We were worried that the sea would be too cold in early April but we were able to jump in! Chilly but good fun. An endless supply of prosecco and beer was very welcome. The other passengers were good fun too and everyone had a great time. Our daughter and grandson said it was the best day of our trip! Pompeii was moved to 2nd place! My husband’s cap flew off and the boat was quickly slowed and skilfully manoeuvred to retrieve it with a hook to the amusement of everyone! It is also great that it is based in Marina Grande rather than where the ferries go from. Much easier to get to and when you arrive back its a perfect place to eat! Cannot recommend this company highly enough. Emails with questions before we booked were promptly replied to. Fabulous service by a great team. Thank you all.

Guaranteed stop at Blue Grotto (purchase ticket onsite)

Visit the Marvelous Grotto, White Grotto, and Green Grotto

Morning Pickup From Your Hotel

No need to worry about finding a taxi today, as our driver is on hand to pick you up at your Sorrento hotel and take you straight to the port, where your boat will be waiting. After booking, please get in touch to let us know where you're staying.

Cruise to Capri

Sit back and relax as the boat cruises along the coast of the Bay of Naples. As Sorrento disappears from view, you'll approach the eye-catching island of Capri—known as one of Italy's most luxurious destinations.

One of your first views will be the ruins of Tiberius' Imperial Palace. The second emperor in Roman history lived in Capri during the tumultuous days of his reign. Your tour leader will tell the story of how the Roman Empire almost collapsed just a few years into Tiberius' rule.

You'll continue to Marina Grande, the main fishing village of the island, where tiny fishing boats and bright houses give off the warm local energy that made Capri famous. You'll be returning to Capri later on to explore at your own pace, and your local crew will have plenty of recommendations to offer.

The Blue Grotto and Capri's Famous Caves

One of the highlights of Capri is the abundance of beautiful natural caves along the coast, locally known as "grottoes."

The exclusive Blue Grotto is a true world wonder. With natural light shining through at the perfect angle, the reflection onto the pure blue waters illuminates the entire cave in a stunning hue of royal blue.

Tourist numbers are tightly controlled here, so tickets are required to hop on one of the approved rowboats that enter the Blue Grotto. Just make sure to bring the €14 entry fee in cash for each person in your group and enjoy a dazzling ride through this one-of-a-kind cultural site.

Later in the afternoon, as you sail around the island, you'll stop to visit the Marvelous Grotto, White Grotto, and Green Grotto.

Explore the Island of Capri

Arriving in Marina Grande, your boat will dock in the marina and you'll have a 4 to 5 hours to take in this charming little island at your own pace. Your crew will be happy to tell you where to get the best past, pizza and seafood for lunch, and you can stroll through the cobblestone streets to your heart's content.

You may decide to take the funicular (tram) through the lemon groves to Capri Town, where you'll find most of the designer shops, or you can simply take a walk and find one on the many incredible viewpoints on the island. After a few hours of free time, head back onto the boat for the final stretch of your day at sea.

A Day of Swimming, Snorkeling, and Relaxation

Throughout the afternoon, there will be plenty of chances to jump in the warm Mediterranean waters for a dip, or you can choose to snorkel and explore the reefs and caves. (Bring your own snorkel gear or purchase onsite.) With beer, wine, and soft drinks included on board, enjoy a relaxing cruise in one of the world's most beautiful settings.

Upon returning to Sorrento, our driver will be ready to take you back to your hotel after a full day of exploring Capri. Ciao!

Great boat tour and guides

Our trip was the boat tour to Capri with a stop to Blue Grotto. Boat staff were great! They helped us secure a van to Anacapri. They go beyond what is in the itinerary which was fun. They also helped us secure a better boat for blue grotto at 28 euro per person instead of the original boat that wanted 43 euro person. The grotto is a brutal business so ask your skipper if they help you hustle a fair price at the grotto. The views were amazing. They took us to amazing scenic spots for viewing and swimming (e.g. love tunnel and waterfall). We went on other boat tours so we can say our boat for this tour was well stocked and generous ;-) we tipped well after an amazing day.

Manuel and Nino were awesome!

The boat tour itself was an awesome experience, but Manuel and Nino made it over the top! Manuel was super friendly and made the tour fun! And I have never seen Anyone maneuver a boat like Nino! Super impressed and it’s a must do when in Sorrento!

Best Excursion we had

We loved our experience on this boat tour of Capri. Our captain and crew were awesome and very knowledgeable of the island. We were fortunate to get to go in the Blue Grotto which was incredible! Capri was beautiful and the water is amazing!! Highly recommend!!

Frequently Asked Questions

What to bring?

Bring a swimsuit and sunscreen. For the Blue Grotto, bring some cash to tip the dedicated skipper (not your day skipper) who will lead you into the cave.

Is lunch included with this tour?

A full lunch isn't included with this tour, although plenty of snacks and drinks will be available while you're on the boat. At lunchtime, you'll be exploring Capri island independently, but the crew will be more than happy to tell you about some great local lunch spots!

What if I have concerns about my mobility?

You'll need to be able to get on and off a boat, of course, but all swimming and snorkeling activities are entirely optional. Your time on Capri island is free, so you can decide for yourself what itinerary is manageable.

Do I have to pay to enter the Blue Grotto?

Since access to the Blue Grotto is limited, tickets must be purchased in cash at the departure point for the Blue Grotto. Please bring €14 in cash for each person in your group if you would like to be guided into this exclusive cave.

Do I have to bring my own snorkeling gear?

For hygiene reasons, snorkeling equipment is no longer shared among customers. You are welcome to bring your own snorkeling gear or purchase it at the office before you depart for Capri (€20 for snorkel and mask).

Will I be picked up at my start time?

Prior to your tour, you'll receive a notification of when to expect to be picked up, if your hotel is in the approved pickup areas. This often starts up to an hour before the official start time so that you have as much time as possible to enjoy the day in Capri.

Is this tour run by The Tour Guy?

No, but it's run by one of our trusted and vetted partners in Sorrento.

Are the any additional fees to pay?

Yes. Please bring €5 per person for onsite docking fees.

How much time will we have in Capri?

You'll have between 4 and 5 hours to enjoy exploring the island, shopping, and eating lunch.
