Great help remotely while travelling on our own

Normally we always like to travel without any tour guides, so via Local Heroes we only arranged inland flight tickets and a rental car. However they were available 24h per day with assistance for everything including changing the car halfway to a 4x4 and arranging we could leave luggage at a hotel for some days. Felt really easy and secure to hace them as a backup for all our questions. I really recommend this for anyone!

South Africa 3 week family trip organized by Tanja.

From the first moment until the end of the trip Tanja has been extremely helpful, knowledgeable and always very quick with her responses. She came with a well thought through itinerary and ideas for our 3 week round trip but was also very open to incorporate some of the ideas we had, both on accommodation and activities. Tanja has been flexible all along and continuously answered our questions. Accommodations were nice and almost always as expected. We also received a very informative welcome pack. We would highly recommend Tanja for a trip in Africa!

Colombia experience.

Colombia experience. We booked a 2 week vacation to Colombia on very short notice. Sjors, the local hero, did an excellent job in organizing a great tour for our family. Very good programs and excellent tour-guides made this a wonderful experience. Definitely would recommend.

Sri Lanka and Maldives - July/August 2019

We made our first trip with local Hero to Sri Lanka and Maldives. The schedule was planned together with Nipun, the local agent. We were pleasantly surprised by the quality and service provided by Nipun! He provided us detailed information, took ample time to arrive at our optimal travel plan, and has an eye for detail. During our entire trip we were well taken care of, first of all our great, professional and pleasant driver Nihal. During the entire trip in Sri Lanka he was at our disposal and we traveled in a large almost brand new air conditioned van. Especially the air conditioning was very welcome at the high temperatures during this period of time. Also, in Maldives we were waited for upon arrival on our island. During the trip few issues happened and they were well handled by Nipun and/or Nihal. The trip itself was a balance between sightseeing, activities and moments of rest. The quality and personal touch of the activities clearly outstood the standard. One attention point is the quality of the accomodation. Most places we stayed in were clean, well prepared and comfortable, however two hotels clearly were not up to the standard (mold, dirty).

-Local Hero Travel Team, Arnhem.

Unforgettable South Africa trip with Local Hero!

I booked an unforgettable trip to South Africa together with my mom and sister. I chose this organisation because the trip is organized by a local, which I think is pretty special, especially when you want to contribute to the local economy. Our local hero Tanja knew everything about the country and managed to make a proposal that really matched all our needs and wishes. She’s very quick, friendly and pro-active in her support and contact. We travelled the country with our rental car for 22 days. From Jo’burg via the Panorama Route towards Kruger. And via Swaziland and Durban to Cape Town and Stellenbosch. Unforgettable were the Timbavati Private Game Reserve where we were saw so many animals and loved being in nature. Also our bush lodge in Nelspruit really stood out. So beautiful, very nice people and a fantastic accommodation with wild zebra’s in our backyard. Wow! On a regular basis Tanja checked if everything was still alright and assisted us during the trip where needed. Really a nice lady who we could count on and we were happy to meet her! When we wanted to arrange something special for our mom, Tanja arranged a nature drive with a private bush dinner at sunset. Imagine a camp fire, south african wine and an excellent diner temidst of fire lanterns and a breath taking view. Really appreciated all the great ideas and her service throughout the journey. I definitely recommend booking with Local Hero Tanja.

A great experience!

Our second time this year with local Hero travel. After our Nice expierences in Costa Rica we decided to work together again. This time we were supported by Tanja for our trip to South-Africa and Swaziland. Wonderful accomodations in the Kruger park with out rooftop tent and 4x4, great help and support. And we saw way more of SA because of the local knowledge of Tanja. This helped us very much in taking a non-turistic deepdive info this wonderful region.

Travel like a local and discover Colombia

Traveling through Colombia is fantastic. Whether you go backpacking, join a group tour or explore the country by car. I myself like traveling around like a local the most. Off the beaten path, special encounters and really getting to know the country. Mass tourism is something I try to avoid as much as possible. This is, of course, a little easier for me; after all, I am a local in Colombia myself. Complete with car and knowledge of the Spanish language. But you too can take a trip that is completely tailored to your needs and interests, where you will experience the most beautiful moments and meet the nicest people. Today I’m taking you into the world of Local Hero Travel, and introducing you to your local Hero in Colombia.

Travel through Colombia like a local - Local Hero Travel

Traveling off the beaten path in Colombia

Colombia is enormously diverse, with the sweetest people and the most beautiful nature. The highlights Colombia, including Tayrona, Salento and Cartagena, are fantastic, but there is so much more. Far off the beaten track, canoing on a deserted lake, horseback riding in the countryside and rafting on unknown rivers. Enjoyment at its best.

Tourism in Colombia is still developing and traveling off the beaten path can be a lot trickier if you don’t know the country and don’t speak Spanish. Although most travelers these days arrange their trips entirely on their own, you often end up with the usual round trip of top destinations. Especially if your stay is short and you don’t know exactly where to look.

But it can be done differently . After all, tailoring your trip to exactly the things you want to do, more off the beaten path, while still keeping the reins in your own hands, is quite easy.

Travel through Colombia like a local - Local Hero Travel 3

Local Hero Travel

In early 2017, I was introduced to Local Hero Travel. A young travel company with the motto “travel the real world: travel local”. The name says it all: with Local Hero Travel, you arrange (part of) your trip from the Netherlands with a local travel expert. You put your trip together the way you want it. With the knowledge and passion of your local, you will discover hidden places, make real contact with the people and support the local community.

You decide how much needs to be arranged. Maybe you’ve already booked your hotels yourself and just want on-site help with excursions or a homestay. Or choose from one of the complete sample trips ready to go. During your tour, visiting Caño Cristales, La Guajira or Nuquí without having to arrange it all by yourself is not a problem either. Everything is possible the way you want it. And how fun is it to share your passion, hobby or work with a local? Whether you are a teacher or a nurse. Fond of dancing, surfing or cooking. Like to do yoga, visit cool festivals and events, or if you just want to ride horses, play tennis or go on long multi-day bike rides. Your local thinks along with you and can arrange the best outings for you, which completely match your interests.

Meet your local Hero: Sjors

When you contact Local Hero Travel, you’ll get in direct contact with your local in Colombia: Sjors. Sjors is the local and experienced travel expert, knows a lot about the country and can arrange more or less anything you want. Sjors is very enthusiastic and ready to give you your dream trip. How exactly? Complete, preferably at least one month before your departure to Colombia, without obligation, fill out, in English, this form . Sjors will then contact you and work with you to see exactly what your wishes are. He will not travel with you, but will be your contact person. The advantage of arranging your trip with Sjors, is that the payments and guarantee simply go through Local Hero Travel. So you have the Dutch security, with the local expertise. Here you can read more about that.

Really get to know Colombia

I know for myself how incredibly valuable it is to really get to know Colombia. To get off that beaten path and travel as locally as possible, arrange something with locals rather than with the big organizations. That time when we were allowed to come along just like that to a hidden coffee finca in Machetá for example, or when we arrived in Guavio and we had no idea that a place so far off the beaten track was so beautiful. And on my blog you will find much more about my passion traveling off the beaten path in Colombia. All those moments I can still remember perfectly and give me such a warm feeling. Really, I can recommend it to everyone.

And that is exactly the added value of Local Hero Travel: as local as possible, customized to your needs, interests and ideas, in a way that suits you. The most beautiful encounters and moments, which will stay with you for a long time. In addition, Sjors knows which areas of Colombia are safe at the time, and so can send you to places you might otherwise never go.

Colombia, follow your dreams.

BESABINE partners with Local Hero Travel. I can call it a lasting relationship; I have good contact with both the Dutch delegation and Sjors. This partnership means that I receive compensation once you book through me. That has no effect on the price you pay. Also, I always give my honest opinion, collaboration or not. I love helping other travelers and often give advice without any benefit to myself. I regularly get requests for collaboration, most of which I turn down. After all, a collaboration must fit me and my blog for 100%. At Local Hero Travel, I immediately had a good feeling. I fully support the concept and am very happy with this commitment. I sincerely hope you will have a fantastic time in Colombia, with or without a travel agent. More information can be found here .

LOCAL HERO, 1983

A fan's tour of Local Hero locations in Scotland

Y ou visit a place, find it a challenge and a bit foreign at first, but gradually fall in love with it. Too soon you're back home, fighting a lump in your throat as you unpack your souvenirs. For Mac, slick exec of Knox Oil and Gas (Houston, Texas), that's how his Scottish trip plays out. He arrives at a tiny coastal village, a man on a mission to purchase the whole place for oil exploration and get back to Texas for tea. In the end, he goes home with an aching heart and a collection of shells that he longingly sniffs.

So goes the story of Local Hero . It's a film I adore for lots of reasons – but especially the way it evokes a sense of place. With Tanera Mòr, an island off the north-west coast of Scotland, up for sale, and the resonance between Local Hero and Donald Trump's acquisitive adventures in Scotland, it feels like a good time to revisit the movie. Every viewing has left me longing to travel to its fictional village, Ferness. Finally, exactly 30 years after the film came out, I managed it.

But being Mac isn't straightforward. While the exterior village scenes of Ferness were filmed in Pennan, on the Banffshire coast in north-east Scotland, the beach was shot way over west, at Camusdarach, and the hotel and pub interiors elsewhere again.

With a background in documentary, Forsyth later admitted he wasn't prepared for such smoke and mirrors. (Nor, perhaps, are fans who have their picture taken in Pennan's famous red phone box. For the film, they built a wooden replica in a more cinematic spot.) But what the atomised reality of film locations does give you is a template for a road trip that's fabulous, even if you aren't nuts about the film.

A white sandy beach at Camusdarach.

Being nuts about it, though, I suggest to my brother (along for the ride) that on the first night we watch the DVD. After pretty expansive eating at Durn House B&B in Portsoy, an impeccably renovated 18th-century mansion that juggles grandeur with cosiness, we settle back to watch but fall asleep, exhausted. That's OK: I know the script well enough to assure you that practically any of the tourist attractions of the area are supported by the film. A visit to a whisky distillery? Try these lines:

Urquhart: "I want you to try this Scotch. It's 42 years old."

MacIntyre: "Old enough to be out on its own."

We choose Glenglassaugh Distillery , near Portsoy, which was revived in 2008 after 20 mothballed years. It seems to run on passion and offers a history-rich tour in a working environment, not a museum.

Staring at the night sky, hoping for the aurora borealis? Happer, the head of Knox Oil and Gas – played by Burt Lancaster – is an astronomy obsessive who insists Mac calls in with sky reports: "Anything out of the ordinary, you telephone me. Night or day."

It's the scenery that steals the show, though. Denis Lawson, who played the inscrutable Gordon Urquhart (hotelier, accountant, lover, barman), says that's part of the reason the film remains his favourite job: "The landscape was like another character, intrinsic to the film. For the beach scenes I remember the excitement, every day, when we left the production caravans behind the dunes. To get on to the set you'd walk on this narrow, wooden, latticed walkway up through the dunes."

For us the drama is amplified by a biblical parting of clouds just as we reach what is known in the film as Ben's Beach (Ben is the old beachcomber whose ancient rights over the sands are a spanner in the oil works). This is a coast with none of the monochromatic perfection of brochure beaches. Between the islands of Rum and Eigg out west, the sand, the grasses and the rocks under your feet, there is colour and contrast everywhere.

Our base in this area, the Old Pines in Spean Bridge, doesn't look much – a modern chalet in a forest – but offers such inventive cooking and a dazzling highland outlook packed with trails that we don't care. Ben Nevis, Loch Lochy and the Great Glen are your neighbours.

Pennan phone box

"One of the extraordinary things up there is the light," says Lawson. "Normally you shoot early, but we would begin around noon and prepare scenes for the gloaming, sunset light. It's just gobsmacking. We had a couple of props guys on the beach who would spend hours throwing water across it to catch the light. And the thing I remember about Pennan was a night scene. We had three hours of darkness to get the shots. Normally you run out of light; we were running out of dark."

Pennan looks just as it did in the film, but of course can't be the film. There's barely anyone around, and I feel like I'm ghost-hunting. The only evidence is a weather-beaten plaque on the hotel wall: "Bill Forsyth's worldwide success was filmed in and around Pennan." After a quick call from the phone box, we travel a few miles east to the even more precarious Crovie, so tight up against the water that cars are pointless, and groceries must come down via wheelbarrow. Just relish not being able to park, as it launches you into cliffside rambles. From above, Crovie looks vulnerable, dwarfed by rocks and water.

It's easy to miss the two small film stills just inside the doorway of the Ship Inn, Banff . This was the set for the bar scenes, and we drop in after taking a bird's eye view of Cullen, its beaches and red sandstone rocks, known as The Three Kings, from the grand viaduct. In this bar, Mac drunkenly admits he wants to swap his life with Gordon. "I'll make a good Gordon, Gordon," he says.

But it's not to be. Mac is sent back in Happer's helicopter, superfluous in his boss's new dream for Ferness. It felt right to end our journey with a glimpse of Loch Ailort, where Forsyth filmed Mac flying towards the horizon. While he has to consider how his life has been turned on its head, you can stop off at the Glenuig Inn , stock up at Macdonald's smokehouse and pack up your shell collection.

ViaHero Review: Should you let locals plan your 2024 trip?

ViaHero Review: Should you let locals plan your 2024 trip?

You're an avid traveler who loves the thrill of chasing new, unique adventures. If you're on the search for your next exciting experience, you should be looking into ViaHero, a travel company that has a local plan your trip for your. Find out whether ViaHero could help you plan a trip of a lifetime or whether it's a big waste of time and money.

local hero travel

More and more travelers prefer to travel "like a local" and see the real culture during their trips to international destinations. Instead of visiting the hottest tourist attractions, they're more interested in getting a dose of the local life!

If you identify yourself as this type of traveler, one who loves to see daily life and local culture, you would know how difficult it is to find information on lesser-known attractions. Those sights that 99% of tourists don't get to see, since they don't even know about them.

Locals are one of the best sources to learn about the secret tidbits of a travel destination—the hidden spots that don’t make it to the guidebooks. So, if your looking to tap into a local's knowledge, ViaHero offers just that.

ViaHero allows you to connect with locals and get your desired trip planned by them. It boasts of providing travelers with up-to-date, safe, and interesting travel plans with the help of a friendly and knowledgeable local.

But is ViaHero legit and worth using as a service? This is the ViaHero review that will help you make your final decision!

viahero-logo.png

What is ViaHero?

ViaHero is a travel planning service that helps you explore a destination through the lens of a local. It was founded in 2015 by Greg Buzulencia and Rachel Hawkes.

ViaHero is a novel concept that lies between independent travel and guided tours. It connects travelers with like-minded locals, also known as “Heroes,” who are well-informed about the place they live in.

ViaHero has connections with locals around the world. These locals help to curate personalized itineraries for travelers looking for authentic experiences.

However, it's important to understand that a ViaHero Hero isn't a local guide who will accompany you during the tour. These Heroes connect and communicate with you digitally to gather details about what you want. After talking to you about your desires, your Hero will provide you with a comprehensive travel plan and other necessary help.

Is ViaHero Legit?

You’ll be happy to know that ViaHero is definitely legit and is known to be a reliable service for having locals plan your trip. It’s been reviewed heavily online by many users who loved having a customized itinerary curated especially for them!

How Does ViaHero Work?

Now you understand the concept of what ViaHero does. However, how does it actually work if you wanted to book a trip using ViaHero? Let's go through the process step-by-step.

  • First, you'll have to check if ViaHero is offering its service in the destination you are hoping to visit.
  • If yes, you can sign up, specify your preferences, and pick a Hero who caters to your requirements. Once you and the local Hero are connected, the planning begins. You can explain the kind of experiences, activities, and places you wish to explore and other requirements you want included in your itinerary.
  • Initially, you'll be given a basic outline for approval, suggestions, and feedback.
  • Next, the Hero will improve, modify, and revise the itinerary, providing you many drafts along the way until you get a desirable itinerary made based on your specific preferences!

Viahero.png

How Much Does ViaHero Cost?

ViaHero charges a flat rate of $40 per day to plan itineraries to any destination in their list.

Any activities in addition to taxi transfers to or from the airport will constitute a day’s planning. So, if your day involves even one activity besides taxi transfers, you will be charged with a day’s rate.

ViaHero also offers a money-back guarantee, so you can request a refund if you aren’t satisfied with the service. But their cancellation policy is subject to certain terms and conditions.

What’s Included in the Service?

  • A personalized guidebook that details dining, lodging, sightseeing, and all other activity recommendations scheduled for each day.
  • A tailor-made map highlighting the locations of all activities included in the guidebook
  • Prescheduled travel arrangements. The local Hero will book anything that doesn’t require advance payment.
  • Flexibility to revise and edit plans until you get a satisfactory itinerary done
  • Unlimited communication with your local Hero

Where Are the Destinations Covered by ViaHero?

  • North America: New York City, Upstate New York, Cuba, Los Angeles, Puerto Rico, Montreal, and Mexico City .
  • Central & South America: Columbia, Peru, Costa Rica , Rio de Janeiro, and Buenos Aires.
  • Europe: Italy, Portugal, France, Croatia, London , Spain, and Ireland .
  • Asia: Japan , Thailand, and the Philippines.

What We Like About ViaHero

Localized experiences.

One of the frustrating issues travelers face is getting lured into tourist traps and overcrowded places.

A Hero can navigate you away from these areas and recommend local attractions that deliver great value for the money spent. They also help you explore off-the-beaten-path attractions.

Convenience

Many use ViaHero travel because it helps you plan a great itinerary without going through the hassle of planning it!

All you have to do is explain your expectations, and the Hero will handle the rest. You don’t have to spend hours researching and reading reviews on the internet anymore.

Supports local communities

ViaHero connects you directly with a local and provides you many opportunities to support local communities. In addition to paying a local to plan your trip instead of a tour company, you also get to spend money on local eateries, BnBs, and attractions.

ViaHero is a great option, especially if you are hoping to visit remote areas that will benefit a lot from a little support from tourists like you.

Quality itineraries

As per many ViaHero reviews, the itineraries provided by local heroes have proven to be comprehensive and super-useful. So, it’s safe to assume that the service is worth the price and can facilitate you with an unforgettable tour.

There’s also the option of getting revisions done until you get the travel plan you are looking for.

ViaHero Cuba

It’s also worth mentioning that ViaHero is helpful for Americans wanting to visit Cuba. As there are a lot of restrictions and limited facilities, a local from Cuba can help you tour safely, adhering to the guidelines imposed by the government.

travel-planning.jpg

What We Don’t Like About ViaHero

  • Limited destinations

As ViaHero is a relatively new initiative, its services are offered only to a limited number of countries. So, unless you are heading to one of the countries on their list, it’s not a useful travel planning service.

It’s expensive

As you might have gathered already, highly personalized itineraries like that offered by ViaHero don’t come cheap.

If you are an experienced traveler willing to put adequate hours into research and planning and forgo the convenience, you can travel much cheaper. However, ViaHero is cost-effective compared to guided tour services.

Unreliable Heroes

ViaHero promises to connect you with awesome locals who know what they do. But, you can only trust their word and look at previous reviews of Heroes. Some travelers have ended up with locals who aren’t knowledgeable or enthusiastic enough to provide them with a great itinerary.

travel-with-friends.jpg

Is ViaHero Worth It?

According to ViaHero reviews, the service is worth it, and I think so too! Although it’s a little pricey, if you’re looking to experience a place like a local but don’t want the hassle of all the researching and planning, ViaHero could save you loads of time.

Planning a trip through ViaHero will also ensure that you make the most of your destination as there will always be local secrets that the general public won’t know about!

Our Rating: 4.5/5

Beste reistijd Marokko

Valuable tips about traveling the real Cuba

Local Havana Hero

Finally, i did it i’m a hero.

A local one, that’s true, but I am a Hero 🙂 (just a local one).

What happened?

TripUniq a website that specialises in unique trips (the name gives it away) is expanding to Havana, and they asked me to be one of their Local Heros… Their website is very user-friendly. You go there, fill in what you like (f.e. shopping… in that case don’t go to Havana). Good Food (yes! In Havana), culture, music or art (all plentiful in Havana). Type a short text about your wishes and pay up (in my case 7 Euro per day).

In the background, they have a convenient system, which I (your local hero) will use to put your individual trip advice in an app that will guide you.

An offline digital friend

The app works fine offline. You will get your tailor made trip advice and just follow the steps it outlines to get a unique Havana experience. I’ll throw in a few facts and absurdities to make it more fun.

I, as a local hero , specialise in the real Havana. So I (local hero) will show you the must-sees in the old town, but we will soon go underground to make your experience unique and local.

No more hours of planning, no more doubts about what to do and you will not miss out on the good stuff!

Tino in TripUniqu, Your local Havana Hero

Now before you book me (or another local hero), please get to know my perspective.

Some people want to keep living the illusion of rum and salsa. That’s fine by me, but don’t read my book if you want to be delusional…

Prepare and read our book plz.

You can get it here, and I’ll give you a small practical tip on the order page that will save you a few hours waiting time in Cuba…

15 Things to Do in Santa Clara (CA)

Santa Clara is a city of nearly 125,000 residents that’s located in Santa Clara County, about 75 kilometers south of San Francisco .

The city was founded more than 200 years ago as a Spanish Mission. Now, it’s most well-known for its booming tech industry that’s commonly referred to around the world as Silicon Valley.

Though it’s common knowledge to most football fans, it’s a surprise to many to discover that the relatively small city is also the home of the National Football League’s San Francisco 49ers.

Visitors to Santa Clara have abundant activity options at their fingertips without venturing outside city limits, so staying engaged and entertained shouldn’t be an issue.

1. Levi’s Stadium

Levi's Stadium

With a capacity of nearly 70,000, Levi’s Stadium on Marie P. DeBartolo Way in Santa Clara is one of the country’s premier professional football stadiums.

The 49ers play their home games here, and during the off-season, the stadium hosts a variety of annual events, including concerts featuring big names in the music industry.

Taking a family to a football game isn’t the least expensive activity option in the area, but for those who’ve never taken in a pro game, it’s an exhilarating experience that may be worth the cost.

Guided tours are also regularly available, and the bars and restaurants around the stadium are fun to visit year-round.

2. Ulistac Natural Area

Ulistac Natural Area

Despite its large population and the overall hustle and bustle, the Bay Area features plenty of urban parks and natural areas that are convenient options for those interested in enjoying the great outdoors.

The Ulistac Natural Area is located on Lick Mill Road in Santa Clara. It is comprised of more than 40 acres that include a variety of distinct environments.

The natural area straddles the Guadalupe River and is home to an array of plants and animals that are well-suited to its riparian habitat.

A particularly popular attraction for bird watchers, it features a number of well-marked nature trails dotted with interpretive signs.

3. Santa Clara Art & Wine Festival

Santa Clara Art & Wine Festival

Californians take their art and wine seriously, and there’s no better way to combine the two than by visiting the Santa Clara Art & Wine Festival.

The event is held in the city’s Central Park and features nearly 200 vendors from across the country selling fine art and crafts, gourmet food, and a vast selection of California’s best wines.

Proceeds are donated to worthwhile causes that benefit residents in need. It all takes place in the early fall when the central California weather is perfect for outdoor activities.

Other highlights include live entertainment and lots of art-related activities for kids.

4. The de Saisset Museum

de Saisset Museum

Though he’s not exactly a household name for those who don’t typically travel in West Coast art circles, Ernest de Saisset was one of the Bay Area’s most prominent artists in the 19th century.

Saisset was a French immigrant who enrolled in Santa Clara University and studied painting as a young man.

The museum that now bears his name is located on the university’s campus. It includes a collection of more than 100 of his most impressive works.

It’s as much a historical attraction as it is an art one, and it also has other works from European and American artists dating back hundreds of years.

5. Intel Museum

Intel Museum

Intel is one of the titans of the tech world. Over the years, it has been responsible for some of the most significant technological leaps forward in computer hardware.

The Intel Museum is located on the campus of the company’s world headquarters in Santa Clara, and it’s regularly open to the public.

Even for those who don’t fall into the tech-savvy category, it’s a fascinating place that’s definitely worth an hour or two of time.

Though it may sound dry to technophobes, it’s packed with interactive exhibits for visitors of all ages, so it’s great for kids with short attention spans too.

6. Santa Clara Farmers’ Market

Farmers Market

There’s really no better way to rub elbows with locals, enjoy pleasant weather, and have access to tons of great products you won’t find elsewhere than by visiting a farmers’ market.

The Santa Clara Farmers’ Market is open year-round and features a little bit of everything – from seasonal produce and fresh baked goods to health and body products and prepared food items.

Held on Jackson Street near the downtown area, it’s common to find different items each time you go.

Spending a few bucks is a great way to support local farmers and entrepreneurs, and don’t be shy about asking them for suggestions for things to see and do while in town.

7. California’s Great America

California's Great America

There’s no shortage of theme parks in the Golden State, but there’s one clear choice for those visiting Santa Clara.

California’s Great America is located on Great America Parkway just outside of town. It features tons of rides, dining options, kid’s activities, and a water park that’s a huge draw during the hot summer months.

Though Great America can really draw a crowd during peak times when kids are enjoying their summer vacations, previous guests have noted that wait times for rides weren’t overly long.

Many families choose to spend an entire day on-site to avoid wasting valuable recreational time in the car.

8. Mission Santa Clara

Mission Santa Clara

Mission Santa Clara is one of the city’s premier historic sites, and it’s now conveniently located on the campus of Santa Clara University.

The mission was established by Franciscans in the 1770s to spread Christianity to the area’s Native American population.

Sadly, things didn’t go according to plan; due to several natural disasters, the mission was forced to move from its original site to where it is now.

Over the years, it was also run by the Jesuits. Though it’s no longer functioning in its original role, it now doubles as a museum and chapel that are open to visitors.

9. The Triton Museum of Art

Triton Museum of Art

Though guests tend to visit the Triton Museum of Art for the works in its collection, its stunning contemporary architecture usually makes a big impression as well.

The museum’s collection includes works from all over the country, but its emphasis is on pieces created by Bay Area artists using local people and scenery as inspiration.

The grounds also include a sprawling outdoor sculpture garden spread over nearly seven acres, and a home from the mid-1860s that’s among the most well-preserved examples of historic American architecture in the area.

The museum is located on Warburton Avenue, and most visitors spend a few hours on-site.

10. Santa Clara Players

The Santa Clara Players traces its roots all the way back to the early ‘60s, when a group of local performers began putting on small shows for the community.

Now nearly seven decades later, they’re still going strong. Their annual performances run the gamut from dramatic theater and mystery to satire and humor.

The players are part of a community theater group staffed by talented volunteers dedicated to providing high-quality, family-friendly entertainment at a reasonable cost.

They’re located on Don Avenue in Santa Clara and offer lots of volunteer opportunities for budding actors and stagehands.

11. Central Park

Santa Clara Central Park

Featuring lots of wide-open spaces and massive swimming and community rec centers, Santa Clara’s Central Park is a go-to destination for activity minded visitors looking to make the most of their limited vacation time without traveling to more distant attractions.

The park is centrally located on Keily Boulevard, has ample parking, and features lots of outdoor amenities and recreational activity options.

From tennis and basketball to softball, lawn bowling, and a big playground, there’s really no excuse for getting bored while on-site. For those looking to spend a relaxing afternoon, there are a lake, built-in BBQs, and public restrooms.

12. The 49ers Museum

49ers Museum Located In The Levi’s Stadium

Even for those who won’t be in Santa Clara during the regular season, the 49ers stadium and museum are fun attractions worth visiting for sports-minded visitors.

The museum is located inside Levi’s Stadium and features nearly a dozen distinct galleries that are open to the public year-round.

It’s a fun and educational experience for visitors of all ages. In addition to football, its exhibits touch on science, technology, and art in a way that engages and entertains young and old minds alike.

Most guests check out the introductory video in the visitor’s center before showing themselves through the impressive collection of trophies, balls, and Super Bowl memorabilia on display.

13. The Santa Clara Fire Museum

Santa Clara Fire Museum

The Santa Clara Fire Department’s roots run all the way back to the 1850s when it was founded.

The museum is now located on Walsh Avenue in an unused training center behind the city’s new fire station.

It sports an impressive collection of equipment and historical memorabilia that give visitors unique insights into the lives of fire and rescue personnel in years past.

The museum’s highlights include a fully restored Model-T fire truck that served for two decades, beginning in the 1920s.

The knowledgeable local volunteer staff also offer regular programs geared at educating the public about fire safety and prevention issues.

14. Edward Peterman Museum of Railroad History

Edward Peterman Museum of Railroad History

The Edward Peterman Museum of Railroad History is run by a local historical society. It is housed in the depot of a now-defunct railroad on Railroad Avenue in Santa Clara.

Like many local historical attractions, the museum is staffed by local volunteers who love answering questions and showing first-time visitors around.

The museum’s exhibits include a variety of railroad equipment and memorabilia, including signals, safety equipment, and historical photographs dating back over 100 years.

The museum is regularly open to the public. It maintains an extensive library of books relating to railroad development and local history as well.

15. Voyager Coffee

Voyager Coffee, Santa Clara

Though it has only been around since 2016, Voyager Coffee’s owner and staff are dedicated to the noble pursuit of making their customers happy.

They do this largely by providing world-class coffee, but also by offering a comfortable space in which guests have opportunities to build relationships with like-minded customers.

Many of their coffees sport internationally influenced flavors, and they’re often infused with things like orange essence and cherry blossom water.

Don’t worry if you prefer your coffee straight-up, because they’ve got more traditional brews as well.

They offer fresh pastry and baked goods, tea, and other non-coffee drinks too.

Manhattan's Chinatown

Jackson heights, queens, crown heights, brooklyn, washington, d.c., los angeles, preserving vietnamese tradition in silicon valley.

by Beth Nguyen

Photos by Patricia Chang

D rive through East San Jose and you’ll find a familiar American landscape: strip malls and franchises, highways and subdivisions. You could be almost anywhere, except for the occasional palm trees, the Diablo mountain range in the distance — and the increasing number of signs written in languages other than English. Because this part of northern California, particularly the few-mile stretch between Story Road and Tully Road, is the home of a thriving Vietnamese and Asian American community.

Like most stories about Vietnamese people in America, this one begins with the fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975. Thousands of refugees, fleeing persecution and reeducation camps, arrived in the United States via Camp Pendleton, in Southern California. The federal government tried to resettle refugees in towns across the country but enclaves formed in warm-weather areas: Los Angeles, Houston, New Orleans, and San Jose. The most famous Little Saigon is in Southern California’s Orange County, but San Jose now boasts the greatest number of Vietnamese residents in any one city outside of Vietnam—estimated at more than 180,000 today. It makes sense that so many refugees were drawn to California, which was already home to many Chinese, Japanese, Filipino, and South Indian immigrants and their descendants. While these cultures are all distinct, they shared some staple ingredients and, just as importantly, the understanding of what it means to be have emigrated from Asia. And it makes sense that in the 1980s many Vietnamese refugees headed toward the growing Silicon Valley, where a booming tech industry offered ample manufacturing jobs and opportunities for upward mobility into engineering fields.

local hero travel

Though a major tech hub and the largest city in Silicon Valley, San Jose has always been the less-visible cousin to San Francisco an hour or so north. It’s sunnier and less expensive, with room for parking lots and gigantic malls. For immigrants, these aren’t so much signs of suburbia as they are signs of space and possibility: places where real estate might be more accessible; places where families can grow.

Refugees leave their home countries because they have no other choice. They don’t know where they will end up, just that they have to start over. In America, that starting over has always included the pressure to assimilate. The mere existence of immigrant communities can be seen as a refusal to do so: Instead of acculturating, they say, we are here, this is who we are, join us if you like . And if there’s one thing that refugees and immigrants will never give up, it’s their food culture.

Ethnic enclaves tend to grow around restaurants, groceries, and entrepreneurs, all looking for ways to fulfill cravings and provide reminders of home. In San Jose, the new Vietnamese community was bolstered by access to Asian markets in the area, that had already been established by other immigrant families from Asia. In this way, the Vietnamese community developed less as an enclave and more as an integrated, borderless part of the larger San Jose area.

One of the earliest businesses was Lee’s Sandwiches, which sold banh mi out of a truck and eventually grew into a stand-alone shop. Other businesses grew, too: clothing and fabric stores, import stores, music and video stores where you could get tapes of Vietnamese singers and shows. But always, the focal point was food: Places to get pho, banh mi, banh xeo, com tam, cafe sua da , produce, and snacks became social spaces. Places for gathering were always places for eating.

local hero travel

Scenes from San Jose’s Vietnamese community.

It’s probably fitting that the Vietnamese community in San Jose developed around shopping malls, which are nothing if not pragmatic. Lion Plaza on Tully Road, anchored by a giant Asian supermarket, took root in the early 1980s and became the heart of the community. Described by local paper San Jose Mercury News as “a place where no one makes a rendezvous, yet everyone comes,” Lion Plaza was a space for people to meet and for the community to emerge through celebrations at Tet (Vietnamese New Year) and other holidays.

Today, over 40 years after the fall, the original refugees in San Jose are surrounded by children and grandchildren who were born in America, who know Vietnam through stories and culture rather than experience. This generational shift can be seen not only in political viewpoints — the elders have tended to vote Republican, driven by anti-communist beliefs; the twenty-somethings now, much less so — but also in the changing landscape of San Jose’s Asian American community and Silicon Valley. The refugees of the past found work in restaurants, shops, and the early years of tech; many of their descendants are part of the changes driving that industry.

The malls reflect this contrast between generations. Lion Plaza remains old guard, old school. Vietnamese men still hang out and talk near the giant Lion Supermarket. A video store leaves its doors wide open, and Vietnamese songs blare out. Meanwhile, less than three miles away on Story Road, the Grand Century Mall, established in the 2000s, and the new Vietnam Town shopping area next door are all about the now, their architecture marked by a kind of Vegas-y, faux Tuscan look meant to signal affluence and aspiration. Alongside the restaurants are skincare salons and spas, jewelry stores, a plastic surgery center, a professional equipment karaoke store. The music blasting here is millennial. At the same time, shops like Tea Lyfe and Soyful Desserts bring a hipster element to this evolving mix.

Still, the generations coexist without competing. And in doing so they challenge preconceived ideas about authenticity, as what’s “authentic” isn’t necessarily found at a hole in the wall. San Jose’s Vietnamese community is about embracing tradition and making things new at the same time. Like the rest of Silicon Valley, it’s about growth. You can still find the produce and orchids and even Vietnamese videos, but you’ll also see bubble tea shops and stores devoted entirely to cosmetics. Lee’s Sandwiches is still around, but has grown into a banh mi chain. Pho Hoa, a restaurant that opened in 1983, has become an empire with over 60 locations around the world. Its home on Tully Road has granite countertops and pendant light fixtures. On the menu everything is outlined in English, and amidst more traditional options like the lemongrass pork chop, there’s a kid’s pho meal that comes with an organic juice box. The restaurant has even trademarked the phrase “Health Conscious Choice.” Pho Hoa, the original, is the fulfillment of the American dream of prosperity.

It makes sense that such an empire would begin with pho, surely the most well-known Vietnamese dish in America. With a long-simmered beef broth as its foundation, classic pho contains multitudes — rice noodles, meat, onions, herbs, and spices — in styles particular not just to regions but to families. Beef is common, as is chicken pho, called pho ga . The noodle soup is a concept and a canvas, depending on where you are and who’s doing the cooking. Lime, bean sprouts, hoisin, fresh herbs, and Sriracha all might be offered as garnishes, and now pho, traditionally a breakfast food, can be enjoyed at any time of day. The choice is the diner’s.

Pho with garnishes.

You can find plenty of standout pho restaurants in San Jose, but pho is not the only soup of Vietnam. There’s also bun bo Hue , a spicy beef noodle soup, or the crab-and-tomato noodle soup called bun rieu . Across the street from Lion Plaza, tucked into another shopping mall, the restaurant Cao Nguyen offers up a gorgeous canh chua , a sweet and sour soup with fish.

Food traditions from northern, central, and southern Vietnam all find representation in San Jose, and Vietnamese cuisine travels from the hearty and earthy to the delicate and light. Cao Nguyen’s claypot catfish, intensely caramelized with fish sauce, represents the hearty. And banh xeo, a crispy crepe stuffed with shrimp and pork and served with leafy greens, is light. The crepe is a specialty at many places, and is known by cooks as being one of the more difficult dishes to get just right. In between there are more staples: com tam, or broken rice; lemongrass pork chops; turmeric fish; and fried cha gio egg rolls or fresh rice-paper-wrapped goi cuon rolls — and they all find beautiful iterations in this city.

If you’re not in the mood for something savory, look out for tea and coffee and sweets, including iced coffee with condensed milk called cafe sua da; sugarcane juice, freshly squeezed out from sugarcane stalks; homemade waffles flavored with green pandan; and all manner of che — served warm as a dessert soup ( che troi nuoc ) or chilled as a kind of parfait with layers that might include tapioca, bean paste, grass jelly, taro, and often topped with shaved ice or served warm.

Ly Tong, an activist from San Jose, went on a hunger strike for three weeks to oppose the San Jose City Council’s decision not to name the Vietnamese retail area Little Saigon in 2008 — the decision was later repealed. (Marc Martin/Los Angeles Times/Getty Images)

Immigrants in America have always preserved their culture through food. Eventually, the rest of the country catches on. The earliest Vietnamese refugees remember Sriracha as an ingredient that white Americans looked upon as foreign, commercialized by a fellow refugee who opened the company in 1980, making hot sauce inspired by the flavors of Vietnam. Now the sauce is mainstream, tamed in mayonnaise even in fast-food chains. Is this a sign of progress, appropriation, assimilation? Depends on whom you ask. Immigrant communities exist in a space between the everyday and the “exotic,” ordinary to those who live there and a source of fascination to those who do not. Some years ago in San Jose there was a heated debate about the attempt to brand the Story Road area as “Little Saigon;” some wanted it to be called “Saigon Business District” instead. Though Little Saigon eventually won, it’s a designation that is more understood than commonly used.

Unlike Chinatowns in San Francisco or New York, the “Little Saigon” areas of San Jose are not known as a tourist destination, not even in the Bay Area. This is a community that goes about its business for the people who live there. The 2007 opening of San Jose’s Viet Museum, the first of its kind in the United States, signaled how integral the Vietnamese population had become to the area. But that too is an under-the-radar destination. For this community, integration is as much about daily life as it is about looking ahead. The growth of the “Little Saigon” areas is steadfast, its boundaries unmarked. The same might be said about the greater San Jose area, which continues to climb in tech, in food, and in culture. America has always been shaped by its immigrants, and is never separate from its immigrant cultures. The expanding Vietnamese and Vietnamese American communities in San Jose are further evidence of that. And whether you go to Story Road or Tully Road or stop somewhere in between, there’s no better way than to experience this than through food. ■

Delivery driver who helped stop Dublin knife attack will run for local office

Caio benicio used his helmet to halt an assailant who stabbed a woman and three schoolchildren outside a school in dublin in nov 2023..

Isabel Oliveira (L), Micheál Martin, Caio Benicio, and Anne-Marie Connolly (R).

Caio Benicio, the Deliveroo driver who bravely intervened during a knife attack on Parnell Square last November, will contest the upcoming local elections for Fianna Fáil, according to a party statement.

Benicio , who is originally from Brazil, used his helmet to hit a man who had stabbed a woman and three schoolchildren outside Coláiste Mhuire primary school on November 23.

Benicio will stand as a Fianna Fáil candidate in the Dublin North Inner City Local Electoral Area, the party has confirmed.

" Caio wanted to play a greater role in his community and has decided politics is a way of doing that," a Fianna Fáil spokesperson said in a statement.

"We are very pleased he has chosen to run for Fianna Fáil and we believe he will make a fine candidate for the North Inner City."

Tánaiste and Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin said he is "delighted" that Benicio will represent the party.

"Caio wants to play a greater role in his community and I think he will make a very fine public representative," Martin said in a statement on X, formerly Twitter.

Benicio told reporters that he wants to "carry on helping people" by running for local office.

"I want to carry on helping people," Benicio said. "Politics is the best way to do that. People were so kind to me and I feel like I have to pay them back."

Benicio will run alongside fellow Fianna Fáil candidates Anne-Marie Connolly and Isabel Oliveira in the constituency.
