Travel with us on our 18th journey to the batik capital of the world – Bali, Indonesia. More than any other tour provider, we know Bali like the back of our hand. Once again, World of Quilts Travel is bringing you the opportunity to enjoy the Balinese world of batiks as well as the beauty and special culture this island paradise has to offer. We have prepared an incredible and unique vacation experience where you will be inspired by the breathtaking beauty of the island as well as enjoy a first hand experience for batiking ‘Bali Style’, including our exclusive visit to the Hoffman of California batik factory.
No matter where you live, you are welcome to join any of our cruises or tours. We have welcomed guests in Bali from South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, France, Germany, Japan, Turkey, India and the Netherlands., you may join us from anywhere, please email for special pricing.
Fabric manufacture has been an Indonesian tradition for centuries, and Bali is a hub of fabric printing and shopping opportunities. As an added bonus, our guide is knowledgeable in all facets of Bali’s arts and textile culture and leads us on every step of our journey around the island. It is also our pleasure to offer an exceptional opportunity to visit the Hoffman California-International Fabrics batik factory where you will learn firsthand about the process as well as the many contributions the Hoffman family has made to benefit the island. Additionally, we provide the opportunity for you to make your own batik in two distinctly different settings. As you learn how batiks are made and witness the process, you will come away with a whole new appreciation for the skill behind creating these incredible hand made prints. Come along, make your own batik fabrics, enjoy fabric shopping where batiks average less than $2.50 a meter, taste incredible food, visit with warm and friendly islanders and enjoy the colors, beauty and inspiration that Bali has to offer.
WEATHER -Bali is approximately 8 degrees south of the equator. So, you can expect a tropical, warm and humid climate all year around with two main, distinctive seasons: DRY and RAINY.
The best time to travel to Bali depends mainly on the weather, the rainy season is from October – April, the dry season is from May – September. We plan our Batik Lover’s Journey in the summer to take advantage of the best weather Bali has to offer, hopefully avoiding the torrential downpour possibilities of the rainy season.

Bali 2020 (PAST TRIP)
November 08, 2019 By National Quilters Circle Editors filed under Uncategorized .
Bali was a paradise in every sense of the word. We saw amazing sites, completed workshops with master batik artisans, went on incredibly unique tours, visited beautiful batik shops and experienced it all with fellow quilters. Read some of our best highlights from the trip below!
National Quilters Circle Bali Highlight Blog
Colleen Tauke and a group of amazing NQC Quilters went on a marvelous trip to Bali and we want to give you a glimpse into their tour with a few highlights! They got to experience the culture of Bali, see Batik fabric being hand-made, ride elephants and make their own project with Colleen while they were there. They had so much fun that we had to share some highlights of their trip with the rest of our community.
After a long flight, they arrived at their resort to a wonderful Welcome Ceremony! The Balinese performed a traditional dance to live music while the group got to have a bite for dinner. It was a great start to the trip to be introduced to the Balinese culture the very first night they arrived.
Art Excursion
The group hopped on a private coach to their many excursions around the city. At a family-owned woodshop, they saw how the Balinese traditionally carve their wood sculptures and even got to try it out! Then, at the largest art gallery in Bali, they participated in a hands-on Balinese painting workshop. All the participants got to bring their masterpieces home with them.
Animal Sanctuaries
The participants headed to a Monkey Sanctuary to see the beautiful Bali wildlife. They gave treats to monkeys, watched funny pelicans being fed, and saw a hawk fly over their heads straight back onto its trainer’s arm. At another animal reservation, the group got to feed baby elephants! Seeing elephants for the first time was a highlight for a lot of participants. They all got the chance to take a short ride on the elephants and one participant’s elephant even decided to go for a swim with her on its back!
Batik Fabric Factory
The highlight of the trip was the Batik fabric Factory. As Quilters, we are always looking for beautiful fabric to incorporate into our projects. This factory was a Quilters dream! The small family-run fabric factory graciously closed for the morning just so the participants could have a tour and dye their own fabric. The group learned about the intense process that these fabrics go through as they followed their custom piece through the steps. The fabrics weren’t ready for 24 hours, due to the steaming, drying and cutting processes, but once the shop owner brought the group’s fabrics back to the resort, they were amazed by the vibrant colors and incredible quality of their custom fabrics. So amazed that many of them went back to buy more!
There is so much more this trip offered. The group had a great traditional cooking class, watched weavers create a fabric in front of them, and even got to go to the beautiful beaches of Bali. However, the best part was learning a bit more about quilting with the friends they created on this trip. Quilting can sometimes be a solo hobby, but now this great group has more than just quilting in common.

Does anyone know where to buy material for quilting - with
kids designs on it like a sea theme or trains anything for kids
I have not been there for ages, but I am sure you find lots to buy
Hopefully you will get some responses from those who have been more recently and are able to direct you to a particular shop.
Thankyou for your reply - do you have any idea on prices
As you come out of the car park and across from the flower sellers is the store we liked best. But it is worth it to wander down the entire street. Watch out for the perfume/watch/sunglasses hawkers. They are very persistent.
Hello Diane,
could you please tell me, if the fabrics are the same style and quality
of the (quilting) world?
Thanks a lot.
Quality is excellent. of course you check that it is cotton and not a blend.
Try Bali Bamboo (next to Bali Buddha and across from the Post Office) for modern batik on cotton. These are the style of batiks I've seen in sets of fat quarters in US quilt shops. They have a beautiful range of colors and will sell by the meter.
Wardani's Boutique is on Monkey Forest Road just below the football field. They have a great selection of "tenun" fabrics by the meter. There are rich-looking weft ikat patterns as well as solid colors in every shade of the rainbow. They are a light weight (mostly?) cotton for sarongs and clothing that I've used very successfully in quilts. Many of the solids have a subtle two-color sheen as a result of using different colors for warp and weft (same technique used in Thai silks). Wardani's also has some batiks, but they are mostly cheap batik traditional motif prints.
If you want to see the Real Deal in Indonesian textiles, visit the Threads of Life gallery at the top of Jalan Kajeng (hits the main road next to Lotus Cafe). They work with batik and ikat weaving women's groups in remote areas of Indonesia, who produce astonishing pieces of museum-quality with natural dyes. They have been increasing their stocks of batiks lately, especially indigos, and you might just find a spectacular focus piece.
Thank you indonesia 8057 for this very helpful informations!!
Sounds there are fantastic options for quilters :)
go to Denpansar...
One more question: could you please post some informations on the prices
of fabrics?

My Trip to Bali quilt is also now quilted! I love it. I had the longarm quilter (WAY too big for me to attempt to quilt myself!) quilt a "Hawaiian flower" type pantograph in variegated thread. The binding is on this monster, but I still need to hand stitch it to the back. It measures 92" x 110". Great for a bed!

There are some Ubud options for quilting fabrics, too -- driving into central Denpasar for a visit to Jalan Sulawesi can easily take up most of a day.. Try Bali Bamboo (next to Bali Buddha and across from the Post Office) for modern batik on cotton. These are the style of batiks I've seen in sets of fat quarters in US quilt shops.
