ballet LORENT is one of the best storytelling dance companies in Europe. For our 30th Anniversary tour we present one of our best loved fairytale productions – Rapunzel .

With emotional storytelling at its heart,  Rapunzel delivers a fast paced and dynamic performance that captivates family audiences.

In this mighty production a red headed Rapunzel becomes entrapped in the tower, her beauty stays hidden from the outside world. A possessive witch and her pet creatures are Rapunzel’s only company until a Prince comes along, drawn by the sound of her sweet song…

Tumble into a tale full of fight, passion and longing with Carol Ann Duffy’s family-friendly dance-theatre retelling of Rapunzel , presented by balletLORENT.

This take on the fairy tale brings together a collection of world-class collaborators: former Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy; composer Murray Gold, of Doctor Who , Gentleman Jack and It’s A Sin ; and Michele Clapton, an award-winning costume designer who’s worked on Game of Thrones , The Crown and Mamma Mia .

The production is narrated by actor Lesley Sharp of The Full Monty .

Rapunzel is choreographed and directed by Liv Lorent MBE, and the score is by Royal Northern Sinfonia.

With a large cast of dancers and children, this sensational story creates an unforgettable show for family audiences that is relatable in its emotions and fantastical in its design.

Carol Ann Duffy’s glorious Rapunzel is told from the imagination of her parents, whose baby girl was taken by the witch.

The witch has tamed wild creatures to keep her garden safe from intruders, until one day the Wife’s craving for the Rampion tempts the Husband to steal it...

Our Rapunzel is a fighter who rescues herself from the imprisonment of the tower, and saves her Prince as much as he saves her.

This energetic production has so much to offer the whole family. A perfectly playful introduction to ballet; expect football-inspired dance moves, giant balloons and a scooter-riding prince! North East Family Fun
This production is dance theatre for children, young people and their parents – relatable, gorgeous and a good night out! British Theatre Guide

Placed high-up in a tower above the world and faced with the challenge of growing-up, she is found alone, dreaming…

The sun goes up The moon goes down The world keeps turning Round and round.

The moon comes up The sun goes down Can things that are lost Ever be found?

1 year, 2 years, the girl gets older The summers hot, the winters colder

3 years, 4 years, her tower stands straight The girl is dreaming, and still she waits…

5 years, 6 years, the years go by She’s still alone, she wonders why?…

With fantastic music from Chris Mellor, beautiful movement from TC Howard and magical design by Catherine Chapman,  Rapunzel  is a delightful production for children about the curiosity and the joys of growing up, risk-taking and discovering who you are.

The ‘real-life Rapunzel’s tower’ right here in the UK – with a painful walk to the top

  • Hope Brotherton , Travel Reporter

BOTH Germany and Austria are well-known for their fairytale castles, but there are several spots in the UK that also deserve some attention.

Set in Somerset , King Alfred's Tower was built between 1762 and 1779 by architect Henry Flitcroft.

Visitors have dubbed King Alfred's tower as the real-life Rapunzel tower

Despite being named after King Alfred the Great, the tower was actually built to mark King George III's ascension to the throne, as well as the end of the Seven Years' War.

The tower's ties to King Alfred are instead rooted in its location.

Give us your best tip for places to visit in and around Great Yarmouth – you could win a £100 Amazon voucher

The location of the tower is supposedly where the famous Anglo-Saxon king gathered his troops for the Battle of Edington in 878.

It was there that King Alfred, and his army , defeated the Danes, thus saving Anglo-Saxon England from Danish occupation.

In recent years, visitors have dubbed King Alfred's tower as the real-life Rapunzel tower, with tourists recording their visits to the fairytale-style castle on TikTok.

Tourists have complained about the steep stairs giving them 'thigh burn,' but said the views at the top were worth it.

The tower, which is made from more than one million red bricks, has just a staircase inside.

Now a National Trust property, visitors to the 250-year-old tower can climb 205 steps to the top.

Those holidaymakers who've made the climb will be able to take in panoramic views across Somerset, Wiltshire and Dorset .

The tower is surrounded by a wildflower meadow , and Roe deer have been spotted in the woods nearby.

King Alfred's Tower has been praised in online reviews.

One person wrote on TripAdvisor : "Amazing views from the top even on a hazy day. Well worth the thigh burn from the 205 steps."

Another person added: "Very impressed and lovely spot. We walked to Kings Alfred's Tower with friends from Stourhead . Quite a walk, but beautiful."

Entry into the tower costs £6 for a full-paying adult and £3 for a child.

Located on the Stourhead estate, there are plenty of other attractions within the 2,500-acre stretch of countryside, including an ancient woodland and an Iron Age hillfort .

King Alfred's Tower is an 80-minute drive from Bristol , and it's a 90-minute drive from Southampton .

There are plenty of other things to do in the area too, including Stourhead - a Palladian house with a landscaped garden.

Other nearby attractions include St Peter's Pump - a water pump that was first constructed in 1474.

While the water pump was part of St Peter's Church, it was relocated to Stourhead Park by Henry Hoare in 1768.

There are plenty of other historic buildings across the country with links to the Anglo-Saxons, including Tamworth Castle .

Tamworth Castle

Set in Staffordshire, Tamworth Castle attracts thousands of visitors every year thanks to its long history , family-friendly games, and costume characters.

The Staffordshire castle was once an important seat in Anglo-Saxon  England .

From the 7th to the 9th Century, it was at the heart of the kingdom of Mercia in Anglo-Saxon England.

In the 8th century, Aethelflaed, the daughter of King Alfred the Great, and the Lady of the Mercians, lived in the castle.

Today, the castle is open to visitors who can explore 15 different rooms as well as the site's courtyard.

Inside the Rapunzel tower in the UK which you can actually book out for holidays

Snowdonia National Park is home to a Rapunzel-worthy tower and it makes for an idyllic getaway

rapunzel tour uk

  • 15:27, 15 May 2019
  • Updated 09:36, 16 May 2019

If you're after a holiday out of a storybook you won't need to head to a land far, far away - instead, Wales could offer just the thing.

In the heart of Snowdonia National Park sits the breathtaking Brynkir Tower , and it has serious Rapunzel-worthy credentials.

The Gothic tower stands tall amidst the lush green trees and is surrounded by picture-perfect countryside that really will have you feeling like you've stepped into a fairytale.

The Grade II listed tower dates back to the 1800s and was originally built by Sir Joseph Huddart, a British engineer and inventor, to honour his knighthood at the time of the coronation of George IV.

Nowadays the tower has been fully restored - and now you can actually stay inside.

It all feels like a fairytale from the spiral staircases, stone archways and heavy wooden doors.

Then there are the spacious rooms with double beds and cosy alcoves with views over the landscape (the ideal reading nook).

Even the bathroom looks fit for royalty with a large freestanding tub and plenty of space, as well as big windows offering more picturesque views of the scenery.

Meanwhile for those who want to go exploring, villages such as Beddgelert and seaside towns like Criccieth are nearby.

Think it could be your ideal stay? Sykes Holiday Cottages offers seven-night stays from £627 which includes the entire tower, on a self-catering basis. (Based on four people staying).

Richard Williams, who now owns Brynkir Tower after purchasing it in the 1990s, said: "When we bought the tower, it had no roof, windows or floors and needed a complete transformation.

"We worked really hard to create something we knew our guests would love, and the fact people get to experience living in such a magical property is exciting in itself.

"The tower is perfect for couples looking for a romantic break with a difference as well as families with children, as for them it feels like they’re staying in something from a fairytale!"
