Unique and utterly memorable travel experiences for you. That’s our commitment at South America Travel Centre, along with quality, attention to detail and seamless service. We continually strive to build our knowledge of Latin America, searching out areas undiscovered by mainstream tourists. South America Travel Centre has been creating tailor made South America tours since 1995 and is 100% Australian owned.
As with most things in life experience counts and our team knows this astoundingly diverse region firsthand – we’ve lived and breathed it through our own travels and return again and again to discover new places and check in on old favourites. Our sole focus is Latin America – South America, Central America, Antarctica, Mexico and Cuba. Our passion for this region makes it a pleasure for us to continually research, explore and build relationships so that we can craft unique, exceptional value journeys.
Your entire journey is designed personally for you and how you want to experience Latin America. You will travel on your own, at your pace, accompanied by private guides and drivers with private, air conditioned vehicles (effectively your own tour). Once we have a good understanding of just what you’re looking for we begin to create a holiday that is perfect for you. For us, that’s one of the most rewarding parts of working in a specialist travel company; designing unique journeys to suit individual tastes, budgets and desires.
A large number of our clients come back to travel with us again or are referred to us by family and friends. Repeat clients are extremely important to us as a barometer of how well we look after you.
We take note of feedback from every client and set out to exceed expectations every time you travel with us. Here you’ll find a number of recent comments from past clients.
You will have one dedicated consultant who looks after you from the beginning to the end of your journey, ensuring every aspect of your holiday is seamlessly arranged. Your consultant will scrutinise your itinerary to ensure you will get the most out of your time in South America and no detail has been overlooked.
Our in-country partners are amongst the very best – many have been with us since we began in 1995. There is always someone on hand in-country to help you out when you are on your trip. You can travel knowing you have someone looking out for you.

In the rainforests and jungles choose from a wide range of eco-lodges – from a comparatively luxurious retreat among the forest, to a complex of thatched cabañas in a lakeside location on a private reserve, to remote and rustic cottages offering a truly authentic experience.
Often the best way to observe dramatic scenery or experience the wonders in a world of amazing flora and fauna is by boat. And if you are looking for a voyage that will also offer the comfort of excellent facilities, there are several exclusive and sophisticated vessels that will fulfil your wish.
There are many vessels operating cruises around the Galapagos Islands. We have selected a small number we recommend for our clients as we know they provide wonderful on-board experiences with frequent excursions onto the islands, always escorted by expert naturalist guides.

South America Travel Centre: Reviews
Fantastic experience: I want to commend Anna on her honesty & integrity. I did not book my trip through Anna because she genuinely believed she couldn't assist me with my choice of journey. Not dollar driven. She pointed me in the right direction where i would be better suited. If that is not a sign of not only of an outstanding person, but also her ethics regarding business. Anna i am forever grateful to have met such a real person. Thank you. Credit to you. You deserve all the happiness & success. I would recommend you to anyone wanting to seek your services.
Fantastic experience: Well paced and thoughtful itinerary. Had a wealth of knowledge about our destination (Chile/Peru). Even suggest a last minute change of hotel as they had received some negative feedback Everything ran smoothly and as expected, can't ask for much more than that, A wonderful trip.
Fantastic experience: Everything was as it was supposed to be and we never had to lift a finger. We were picked up at Buenos Aires airport and taken to a well located and appointed hotel by our local guide Monica. Given a great personal half day tour of Buenos Aires. Given any information we needed for a pleasant stay. Taken to an enjoyable tango show and dinner and back to the hotel afterwards. Next day, taken to the domestic airport for a flight to Iguazu. There, collected by a great guide for a personal tour to and of Iguazu falls. The guide, Elvis, stayed with us throughout the tour even through one of the heaviest rainstorms I've ever experienced, a storm that caught us in the open on the long open walk to the viewing platform at the Devil's Throat water fall that soaked us more than the excellent boat ride under the falls did. Then taken to a well chosen great and quirky jungle hotel for a well earned sleep. Next day taken to the airport for the flight back to Buenos Aires where again we were collected by our guide, Monica and taken back to our hotel for another day in BA and next morning taken to the cruise terminal. All in all, a great tailor made experience arranged by the South American Travel Centre whom I will certainly use again in the future and whom I very highly recommend to anyone contemplating a trip to South America.
Fantastic experience: My daughter and I had a lovely time visiting Antartica last December. It was a fascinating and educational journey for both of us. The scenery was just breathtaking and exceptional! Our time in the cruise ship was comfortable and satisfying. Also, a big thank you to Alana Lewthwaite of SATC, she was very helpful and professional of how she handled our travel arrangement. - Roshan and Shamara Mendis
Positive experience: This was our second trip with SATravel, the first a few years ago to Cuba and this time to Patagonia and Antarctica. On both occasions we were very happy with the organisation and especially in the way we could tailor the trip to our needs. Excellent service, knowledge and follow up. Recommended (I never give more than 4 starts ;-) )
Fantastic experience: From the first contact, Hayley and the team at SATC we’re responsive, well organised and knowledgeable. Hayley and team gave us ideas based on getting to know our preferred travel style and they came up with an itinerary that was magicaland was just right for us.
Fantastic experience: We decided to book our recent "trip-of-a-lifetime" to South America and Antarctica through South America Travel Centre. And we are really glad that we did! Only a month or two before our departure, the ship that we were booked on to Antarctica ran aground up in the Arctic. Before we even knew about it, SATC had already found us an alternative ship and held cabins on board for us in case our ship was not able to make it down. This was a life-saver, as indeed the original voyage was cancelled. SATC made all necessary itinerary changes to make it all work smoothly. Then again, during our South America travels, when Aerolineas Argentinas airline strikes threatened to derail our plans, SATC's loco agents in Argentina were on the ball, changing plans on the fly and the local guide even waited for hours at the airport with us to make sure we got a flight. It was fantastic knowing that if things went wrong, there was someone who would fix it for us. Hayley and the rest of the team at South America Travel Centre were amazing throughout, always friendly and helpful, and all the accommodations, excursions, local tours and transfers arranged were fantastic. I would highly recommend their services to anyone planning a trip to South America and/or Antarctica.
Fantastic experience: We cannot recommend SATC more highly. After having to cancel our original bookings at the end of last year due to health issues, we rebooked and enjoyed the most unique experiences - cruising in the Antarctic, a unique and incredibly satisfying time. We then travelled through Ushuaia, Buenos Aires, Santiago and the Atacama desert. The transfers and tours recommended by SATC were on time, with friendly and very professional guides, the vehicles spotless and comfortable. We also booked FoodyChile tours (a market and cooking tour, and a wine country tour) in Santiago and this was without doubt a real highlight. We finished our trip in the Atacama desert, another amazingly diverse environment. Thanks so much to Hayley at SATC, your expertise and professional advice are priceless.
Fantastic experience: We are not people who generally book our travels through an agency. But when we planned to travel to South America we decided to invite experts to help us put together something that would hit the right spots, be safe and trouble-free. Hayley at South America Travel Centre put it together for us, and we had the trip of our lives. The care and support we received throughout was exceptional. The Centre's agents through Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Brazil and Argentina were high standard and personable; the itinerary was balanced and imaginative. When unforeseen circumstances forced a sudden change in some of our plans, the team didn't miss a beat, and we enjoyed every aspect—fascinating places and cultures, surprising cities, vast and beautiful wildernesses, and some excellent hiking too.

What do you get in a South American Tour? Exciting adventure, breathtaking nature, indigenous and colonial history… incredible food, wine, and coffee… tropical beaches, vibrant festivals, music and dance… and more! It’s no wonder that South America is increasingly becoming a top choice for solo travellers and groups.
South America consists of 14 countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Falkland Islands (British Overseas Territory), French Guinea (a part of France), Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay and Venezuela.
Contrary to popular belief, Spanish is not the most spoken language in South America! The majority language is in fact Portuguese. It is the national language of Brazil, the largest country in South America, consisting of about half the continent’s land and population.

What our clients say about us
"Hi Nico, Just wanted to contact you and extend our thanks for the wonderful tour that South America Tours organised for my group. Everything went like clockwork and every pick up, transfer and tour was exactly as promised. The guides were great and showed us the real side of the countries that we visited. We were a group of 4 couples and all were impressed with the level of service. I have attached a pic of our group at Machu Picchu. Once again, many thanks."

Discover our Latin American expertise by meeting the team at Contours Travel!
TED DZIADKIEWICZ
Travel specialist.
We know Latin America by heart
Ted is our Managing Director and first explored South America as an overland bus driver in the mid-1970s. Since then he has been back more than 120 times over the past 40 years! Ted has travelled throughout the Caribbean and overland from the Mexican border down to the southernmost tip of Latin America. In 2015, Ted received the Lord Mayor’s Commendation award, which recognises the longevity and success of Contours Travel as a business and the valuable contribution that Ted has made to the city of Melbourne.
TED’S TRAVEL EXPERIENCE:
Ted’s experience reads like a library of Lonely Planet Guides. He knows almost every inch of every country he has visited. In South America, he travelled to Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Uruguay, Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela and Guyana. In Central America, he went to Belize, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Panama and El Salvador. He also travelled extensively in Mexico and Cuba. Has been to 20 of the Caribbean islands, including Antigua, Aruba, Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, Bequia, Grenada, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, San Andres (Colombia), St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Martin, St. Maarten, Trinidad, St. Thomas, St. Vincent, St. Croix and Bermuda. Most recently he travelled Antarctica where his Zodiac glided into a Humpback Whale!
- My Latin American highlight is swimming in the Napo River in the Ecuadorian Amazon with my son Lucasz. Another great memory was a very close encounter with a Speckled Bear family while walking the Inca Trail. We had to stay quiet and hide so the baby bear would cross the trail!
- My advice would be: Taste the red wine! Squeeze half a lime into anything. Don’t be afraid to go off the beaten track; you’ll be sure to find something very different.
- The next destination on my list: a road trip along Chile’s Carretera Austral is scheduled for early 2024!
HEATHER POPPELIER
Heather started working with Contours Travel in 2007 and has travelled all over South and Central America. She speaks Spanish, makes a mean caipirinha and wishes more people would travel to Nicaragua, Colombia and Bolivia!
LATIN AMERICA TRAVEL EXPERIENCE: ANTARCTICA, ARGENTINA, BOLIVIA, BRAZIL, CHILE, COLOMBIA, COSTA RICA, CUBA, ECUADOR, GALAPAGOS ISLANDS, GUATEMALA, MEXICO, NICARAGUA, PANAMA, AND PERU
- My Latin American highlights: The Guajira Peninsula in Colombia, the northwest of Argentina, the Salt Flats in Bolivia and the Pantanal in Brazil (yes, I know that’s a lot of highlights!).
- My advice for travellers to the region: slow down, try to avoid too many flights in one trip and be open to new experiences!
- The next destination on my list: Guyana has been on my list for a very long time….and it looks like 2024 will finally be my year to make it!
A porteña born and bred, Ines loves all things Argentina and is a passionate advocate for travel to her country’s lesser-known areas such as Ibera and Talampaya. With Contours Travel since 2010, she tirelessly develops new Latin American adventures and keeps the website stocked with the latest offerings. Ines is now living in Buenos Aires, Argentina, which provides Contours Travel the benefit of having an Australian locally-based staff member. This allows her to keep the team up to date on regional hotels and products, while also being available during the day to assist our travellers!
LATIN AMERICA TRAVEL EXPERIENCE: ARGENTINA, BELIZE, BRAZIL, CHILE, COSTA RICA, ECUADOR & THE GALAPAGOS ISLANDS, GUATEMALA, MEXICO, PANAMA, PERU, AND URUGUAY.
- My Latin America highlight: Panama sole my heart on a recent trip! This often underrated beautiful country boasts delicious food, friendly locals, and stunning stunning Pacific beaches. It’s definitely a top contender for my favourite Latin American destination.
- My advice would be: Try to learn a little bit of Spanish. It will give you plenty of opportunities to have conversations with locals, and this will undoubtedly enrich your South American experience!
The next destination on my list is: A Fam trip to Atacama and Patagonia including the fantastic Australis Cruise and Torres del Paine. Checked!!
HANNA SHILO
Hanna comes from fellow Latin Travel specialists, Travel Projects, which she co-owned and ran for 23 years, before closing doors in 2022. She has been creating tailor-made holidays to Latin America since 1999 and has a wealth of experience in luxury and adventure travel in particular.
LATIN AMERICA TRAVEL EXPERIENCE: ANTARCTICA, ARGENTINA, BRAZIL, BOLIVIA, CHILE, COLOMBIA, COSTA RICA, CUBA, ECUADOR, EL SALVADOR, GUATEMALA, MEXICO, PANAMA AND PERU.
- As an outdoor and nature enthusiast I especially love the National Parks and wilderness areas of Chile and Argentina – and the colour and culture of countries like Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia.
- The next destination on my list: After finally making it to Antarctica and South Georgia at the end of 2022, I’m now planning a return trip to Costa Rica and a first time visit to Nicaragua in 2024.
ROBYN SMITH
Robyn comes to us from Movidas Journeys and has been working in Latin American travel since 1988. She began her Latin experience by living in Chile and exploring the continent for two years back in 1986. Returning to Australia, she gave up teaching for a career in travel, always specialising in Latin America. Over the years, Robyn has been drawn back to the continent over and over, escorting groups, attending events and just enjoying more travel experiences.
LATIN AMERICA TRAVEL EXPERIENCE: ANTARCTICA, ARGENTINA, BRAZIL, BOLIVIA, CHILE, COLOMBIA, COSTA RICA, CUBA, ECUADOR & THE GALAPAGOS ISLANDS, GUATEMALA, MEXICO, NICARAGUA, PANAMA, PARAGUAY, PERU AND URUGUAY.
I just can’t stop going back to enjoy the wonderful hospitality of the Latin people, the music, the food, the wine, pisco sours, mojitos, caipirinhas… Among the many highlights are:
- Swimming with sea lions in the Galapagos, with one retrieving my flipper from a tunnel and dropping it back to me
- Communing with the penguins in Antarctica, Chile, and Argentina
- Ziplining on the side of a volcano in Nicaragua
- Learning to salsa in Cuba, after drinking mojitos
- Watching the stars in the Atacama Desert
- Patagonia – just spectacular
My advice: Don’t race through the continent, trying to fit everything in like you will only go there once. You will return! So take it slowly and soak up the culture as you go.
ALEXANDRA TORRES
Alexandra originally hails from Santiago de Chile but has called Melbourne home for the last six years. With a passion for travel and a strong background in customer service and marketing, Alex will provide the team with much-needed administration and sales support. Her previous role as a LATAM Airlines flight attendant gave her plenty of opportunities to explore Latin America, so Alex brings plenty of personal travel experience to the position!
LATIN AMERICA TRAVEL EXPERIENCE: ARGENTINA, BOLIVIA, BRAZIL, CHILE & RAPA NUI, MEXICO, PERU AND URUGUAY.
- Travel highlight in Latin America? A highlight in my travels around South America is definitely Rapa Nui, also known as Easter Island. Particularly the Moai statues. These iconic stone figures, carved centuries ago by the island’s Polynesian inhabitants, stand as a testament to the island’s rich cultural heritage and continue to fascinate visitors from around the globe. Overall, Easter Island stands as a truly unique travel destination, offering a blend of ancient history, natural beauty, and vibrant culture that is sure to leave a lasting impression on all who visit.
- Next destination on your list? My next destination in South America will be Panama. It promises a blend of adventure, relaxation, and cultural immersion. I would like to visit Muelle de San Blas, Bocas del Toro, and Boquete.
My advice: South America is renowned for its rich cultural heritage, vibrant traditions, and diverse cuisines. Take the time to immerse yourself in the local culture by trying traditional foods, attending festivals and cultural events, and interacting with locals. Learning a few basic phrases in Spanish or Portuguese can also enhance your travel experience and make communication easier.

South America Tourism Office (SATO)
The expertise of the South America Tourism Office (SATO) has been built on the advice and experience of locals who have worked in the travel industry for more than two generations. Personalised Service
We specialise in custom making itineraries so if you can’t find a circuit, tour or program length that fits in with your dates and timeframe, we can construct it for you. Latin America has so many interesting destinations to discover across such a vast area which means a lot of things to consider when travelling; flight schedules, travelling times, when is a good time to travel for the places you want to visit etc.? These questions are best left to the experts and SATO can build creative itineraries from Australia including international and internal flights to figure out the best way to see all your desired destinations and get the most out of your journey.

Our Services Explained
Local guides.
We prefer to use local English speaking guides to conduct your tours and believe you will get an extra insight into the local culture and character from the first-hand experience that people living in these destinations can provide handy suggestions for traveling
Transfers and tours will be conducted in a combination of private and seat in coach basis depending on location and cost.
Seat in Coach
Seat in coach services are shared with other tourists from all over the world allowing you to mingle and meet other travelers. This kind of service is the more economical option as the cost is shared with other people and the numbers on any given tour will vary depending to the location and dates.
You will be led by qualified English speaking guides (unless otherwise specified or requested) and in some places, information may also be translated into other languages (such as Portuguese/French/Italian) depending on other nationalities present. Some other languages may also be requested at additional cost. Transfers and tours will be conducted in a combination of private and seat in coach basis depending on location and cost. provide handy suggestions for travelling.
Private Services
Private services are exclusive for you/your travelling companions which means you receive a higher level of personalised service from your guide. The departure time of private tours can be specified, their attention will be completely devoted to you and you can travel at your own pace within the allocated time.
*Please note that in some remote/more expensive regions, a private driver only service may be used to bring down the costs. This will be specified on our itineraries.
We generally do not use accommodation that is considered less than a 3 star hotel and our properties all include private bathroom facilities. (In some less developed places, only 2 star hotels may be available but this is rare and even in these cases, they will have a private bathroom.)
Our philosophy is that location is paramount when you are staying in a city for a few nights, as being central to the attractions and restaurants makes a big difference to your experience. And as safety is a concern for some of our clients, we can often suggest districts/suburbs they may find more appealing.

It is called South America Tourism Office.
Has anyone used them and could give a recommendation
This post was determined to be inappropriate by the Tripadvisor community and has been removed.
where are you going in Sth America?
IME, the travel we booked here in Australia was all farmed out to various operators and as we found out, we paid a lot more for at least one of those side trips which was delivered by people that the agency here subcontracted to. It wasn't until we had paid in full that all of this came to light and it was too late to do anything about it.
Yes I agree with Dougo. We have taken several trips to South America and most of it we have booked ourselves with local agents and operators.
Tell us where and what you want to see and maybe we can help.
I agree with the others... better organize with local operators, it will be cheaper
I am in Montevideo at the moment, and am using Travel Club in 18 de Julio. Leticia here has been great for us.
I've Read your post about South America local tour operators. My husband and I are heading over in October from Brisbane and are unsure whether or not to book a tour from the travel agents books or do it independently like you have.
Could you please MSG me with the details of tour operators you know. We are looking at Peru (all main attractions), Argentina and Brazil (Rio etc).
Any info you could give us would be great!
Thanks, Brumer. :)
have sent you a PM
i have used them a few years ago and i just have some friends who i recommended and they where just so happy with their trip.
they are a small company but very well known for the expertise.
We usually travel independantly, Europe/USA etc, however we used them in 2010 - recommended by a friend - I also believe that they are a SA wholesaler - arrange travel for travel agents- but we were able to deal direct.
Obtained seperate quote from a TA just to compare and SAT were less expensive.
Having said that, yes, they sub-contract out to various local individuals and companies - we had a limited timeframe - 23 days - and perhaps tried to cover too much ground - however, their service was seamless - some of the air connections left at reasonably difficult times of the day - the agents were there every time - on occasions - the individual took shortcuts to avoid long queues.
Checked very hotel against TA reviews - all - without exception were well reviewed.
Fortunately for us we were in good hands when at Machu Pichu - a lightning rail strike was declared - a long story short - also demonstrations in Cusco closed roads and was threatening the airport - the agent manged to overcome these great obstacles (and they were real) to arange air travel to allow us to continue the itinerary - without interruption - otherwise we would still be there - the most frequent comment we encountered when these issues were mentioned was
" Well, it is South America - you know "
Yes - I would recommend - but with the benefit of hindsight - I would also take up the suggestions of other posters and check out some local- recommended - in country SA companies.
To clarify - I was referring to South American Travel Centre - regards ...
