Travel Insurance FAQs

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions from travelers like you.

Is Travel Insurance Mandatory for International Travel?

While rare, some countries or organized tours may require proof of travel insurance that lasts for the duration of your trip. Our Destination Center is a good starting point to learn about entry requirements and travel insurance recommendations.

While it is typically not mandatory, travelers should consider buying insurance if they want to protect themselves financially from unforeseen events that may impact their travel plans. Many Americans and U.S. residents purchase travel insurance when planning international or high cost trips. View our list of the top international travel insurance providers .

What Does Travel Insurance Cover?

Comprehensive travel insurance is designed to cover common disruptions that may impact a trip. Most policies will provide coverage for trip cancellations , medical emergencies , travel delays , missed connections , accidental death and dismemberment , and lost luggage . Travelers that experience financial loss as a result of a covered disruption may be eligible for reimbursement through their insurance policy.

How Much Does Travel Insurance Cost?

In general, a comprehensive policy with Trip Cancellation typically costs between 5% and 10% of the total trip cost. The cost of a policy depends on four primary factors: trip cost, traveler age, trip length, and coverage amounts. A policy without an insured trip cost will be significantly less expensive. We recommend comparing plans from multiple providers to find the best priced plan for your trip.

What Should I Look for When Comparing Travel Insurance?

There’s no one-size-fits-all policy when it comes to travel insurance. When comparing plans, you should consider the following:

  • Benefits: Travel insurance benefits outline what situations are covered under each plan. Make sure each plan you’re considering includes coverage for what’s important to you.
  • Coverage Limits: Plans will set limits to how much reimbursement you’re eligible for, and can vary significantly. Higher coverage limits can result in less out of pocket expenses in the event of a claim.
  • Exclusions: Travel insurance companies will list specific activities, equipment, and scenarios that are not covered by their plans in the event of a claim.
  • Premium: Higher priced insurance products do not always equate to better coverage. We recommend choosing the most affordable plan that offers the travel protection you need.
  • Provider Reputation: All providers on Squaremouth have been carefully vetted and offer 24-Hour Assistance services. Customers are also encouraged to share honest reviews about their experience before, during, and after their trips.

Does Travel Medical Insurance Cover International Trips?

In many cases, primary health care plans, such as Medicare or a policy you have through your employer, are not accepted overseas. If you’re not covered, you may be responsible for unforeseen medical expenses if you get sick or injured while traveling.

To avoid out-of-pocket expenses if you need medical care in the event of an emergency, many travelers opt for travel medical insurance. These plans can cover the cost of treating unexpected medical conditions incurred during your international trip.

Are Pre-Existing Conditions Covered by Travel Insurance?

Coverage for pre-existing conditions varies among travel insurance policies. While many plans won’t offer coverage for existing injuries or illnesses, some plans may offer Pre-Existing Condition waivers if certain conditions are met, such as purchasing the policy within a specified time frame from booking the trip.

Will My Policy Cover Trip Cancellations?

Yes, many comprehensive travel insurance policies cover trip cancellations under specified circumstances, such as sudden illness, injury, or death of the insured or a family member, natural disasters, or unexpected work obligations. Most policies that include the Trip Cancellation benefit offer 100% reimbursement for all prepaid, non-refundable trip costs.

What’s the Difference Between Single-Trip and Annual Travel Insurance?

Single-trip travel insurance covers a specific journey for a set duration, offering protection for that trip only. This is the most popular type of travel insurance among Squaremouth users. In contrast, Annual Travel Insurance provides coverage for multiple trips within a year. Annual plans can be cost-effective for frequent travelers and less of a hassle than purchasing multiple single-trip plans.

What's the Process for Filing a Travel Insurance Claim?

To file a trip insurance claim, follow these steps:

  • Contact your insurer: Notify them as soon as possible about the incident.
  • Gather documentation: Collect relevant documents, such as police reports, medical records, or receipts for expenses incurred.
  • Complete the claim form: Fill out the insurer's claim form with accurate details.
  • Submit supporting documents: Attach all required documents to substantiate your claim.
  • Keep records: Maintain copies of all submissions and correspondence for your records.
  • Follow up: Stay in touch with the insurer for updates on your claim status.
  • Be honest and thorough: Provide clear and truthful information to expedite the process.

Remember, the process may vary by insurer, so review your policy or contact your insurance provider for specific instructions. Learn more about what can be covered and how to file a travel insurance claim .

Where Can I Buy Travel Insurance?

Travelers can purchase travel insurance directly from providers, through a comparison site like Squaremouth, or directly through a travel supplier when booking. Credit cards and travel agents are other sources to consider. Travel insurance prices are regulated by law, meaning the price of one specific policy must be the same regardless of where it is sold, whether it’s purchased from Squaremouth or directly from the provider.

Looking for weekend plans? Downtown Gallatin holds 22nd Square Fest. Here's what to expect

Downtown Gallatin's annual arts and crafts festival, Square Fest, is returning this week, rain or shine.

The 22nd annual spring event , a free, open-air street festival held in the historic downtown square, is planned from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on April 27.

"The weather's going to be beautiful. It's going to be a great day," Downtown Gallatin Director Donna Belote said.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

"Come out and plan on spending the day. The festival is big, and there will be a lot of walking, but I think every place you go as far as the legs of the festival will all be worth it."

More: Shop over 170 vendors at Gallatin's annual Square Fest

Festival organizers expect about 234 vendors and more than 25,000 visitors this year. The event will showcase arts and crafts, handmade goods and a large variety of food.

"(This) is definitely one of the bigger ones," Belote said.

More metal and wood vendors, specialist artisans and other artists and vendors working with natural materials are expected compared to recent years, she added.

Attendees will be able to enjoy live music this year as well, thanks to two stages of entertainment and a large children's area. Specific performers had not been announced.

NASA will unfurl a 860-square-foot solar sail from within a microwave-sized cube

The highly advanced solar sail boom could one day allow spacecraft to travel without bulky rocket fuel.

By Andrew Paul | Published Apr 24, 2024 11:53 AM EDT

ACS3 solar sail concept art above Earth

NASA hitched a ride aboard Rocket Lab’s Electron Launcher in New Zealand yesterday evening , and is preparing to test a new, highly advanced solar sail design . Now in a sun-synchronous orbit roughly 600-miles above Earth, the agency’s Advanced Composite Solar Sail System (ACS3) will in the coming weeks deploy and showcase technology that could one day power deep-space missions without the need for any actual rocket fuel, after launch.

The fundamentals behind solar sails aren’t in question. By capturing the pressure emitted by solar energy , thin sheets can propel a spacecraft at immense speeds, similar to a sailboat. Engineers have already demonstrated the principles before, but NASA’s new project will specifically showcase a promising boom design constructed of flexible composite polymer materials reinforced with carbon fiber.

Sun photo

Although delivered in a toaster-sized package, ACS3 will take less than 30 minutes to unfurl into an 860-square-foot sheet of ultrathin plastic anchored by its four accompanying 23-foot-long booms. These poles, once deployed, function as sailboat booms, and will keep the sheet taut enough to capture solar energy.

[Related: How tiny spacecraft could ‘sail’ to Mars surprisingly quickly .]

But what makes the ACS3 booms so special is how they are stored . Any solar sail’s boom system will need to remain stiff enough through harsh temperature fluctuations, as well as durable enough to last through lengthy mission durations. Scaled-up solar sails, however, will be pretty massive—NASA is currently planning future designs as large as 5,400-square-feet, or roughly the size of a basketball court. These sails will need extremely long boom systems that won’t necessarily fit in a rocket’s cargo hold.

To solve for this, NASA rolled up its new composite material booms into a package roughly the size of an envelope. When ready, engineers will utilize an extraction system similar to a tape spool to uncoil the booms meant to minimize potential jamming. Once in place, they’ll anchor the microscopically thin solar sail as onboard cameras record the entire process.

NASA hopes the project will allow them to evaluate their new solar sail design while measuring how its resulting thrust influences the tiny spacecraft’s low-Earth orbit. Meanwhile, engineers will assess the resiliency of their novel composite booms, which are 75-percent lighter and designed to offer 100-times less shape distortion than any previous solar sail boom prototype.

Don’t expect the ACS3 experiment to go soaring off into space, though. After an estimated two-month initial flight and subsystem testing phase, ACS3 will conduct a weeks-long test of its ability to raise and lower the CubeSate’s orbit. It’s a lot of work to harness a solar force NASA says is equivalent to the weight of a paperclip in your palm. Still, if ACS3’s sail and boom system is successful, it could lead towards scaling up the design enough to travel across the solar system.

Choosing the right insurance provider doesn’t always come down to getting the best price. You want to know that you’re getting good coverage from a reputable company at a fair value for money.

If you’re considering Square One Insurance for your next policy, learn more about the company, what it offers, and whether it’s the right provider for you in this Square One Insurance review.

  • Square One Insurance: Overview

One of the newer names in Canadian insurance, Square One Insurance was founded in Vancouver in 2011 to make home insurance simpler and more affordable for homeowners.

Today, Square One Insurance offers home insurance to customers in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario.

Square One Insurance isn’t an insurance provider itself, rather it acts as an agency or brokerage selling policies on behalf of a third-party insurance provider, The Mutual Fire Insurance Company of British Columbia.

Unlike traditional insurance brokers that have representatives with offices in many communities, Square One Insurance uses an online-only business model, centralizing operations in its Vancouver office. According to the company’s website, this allows them to keep costs low and pass on the savings to its customers.

Also, unlike many insurance brokers, Square One only offers products from one underwriter. Many other insurance brokers work with a variety of providers to get the best value for their clients.

  • Insurance Provided Home, Tenant, Travel, Life, Health
  • Provinces Available BC, AB, SK, MB, ON, QC
  • Founded 2011

Square One Insurance specializes in home insurance. Its products include:

Detached house insurance including comprehensive coverage for the building, its contents, and third-party liability

Semi-detached and duplex insurance with comprehensive coverage for freehold and condo owners

Townhouse and row house insurance with comprehensive coverage for freehold and condo owners

Condo insurance with comprehensive coverage for the unit, contents, damage caused to other units, and third-party liability including shortfalls in the management company’s insurance

Rental property insurance providing coverage to properties you own and rent out to other people

Vacation property insurance providing coverage to properties you own for recreational and vacation use

Tenant and renter’s insurance providing coverage for contents and third-party liability to people who rent their home

Specialty home insurance covering special needs like Airbnb rentals, unique construction like homes with log construction, homes with outdated electrical systems, heritage homes, and other needs that don’t fit the typical insurance policy

Square One Insurance is only available in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario. It doesn’t offer any other types of insurance, such as car insurance or life insurance, for example.

To get a quote from Square One Insurance, you can call their 1-800 number or go online.

To determine the coverage you need, you’ll be asked about your personal information, details about the home (location, size, value, etc.), how the home is used (whether you rent or own, work from home, etc.), and whether you need additional coverage (for your contents, additional structures, etc.).

Based on your needs, you’ll then be recommended the most-suited policy and be shown how much it will cost. You’ll also be asked to choose a deductible (the amount you pay yourself in case you need to make a claim), ranging from $250 to $10,000, which will also affect the amount you’ll pay.

If you’re happy with the coverage and price, you can open an account online and purchase your coverage. Square One Insurance claims that the whole process takes about five minutes.

Uncommon for insurance brokers, Square One Insurance makes a habit of publishing its prices online. Prices start from $12 per month (for basic renter’s insurance covering contents only) and go up from there.

For example, Square One Insurance says that it recently sold a policy to a renter in Richmond, BC covering $15,000 for contents, $35,000 for additional living expenses, and $1 million for liability at a cost of $19/month or $228/year.

The website also states that it sold a policy covering a detached home in Calgary, AB with $452,000 for building replacement, $85,000 for personal property, and $45,000 for additional living expenses for $91/month or $1,092 per year.

Because each situation is unique and many variables affect the cost of home insurance, you’ll have to get a quote to find out exactly what your premium will be. You can get a quote from Square One Insurance online or by phone.

Square One Insurance apparently saves money for its customers by automating much of its customer service.

When you’re getting a quote, buying a policy, making changes to your account, or making a claim, your first step is to access the online self-service options.

If you need help, Square One Insurance offers customer service by phone, email, and live chat. It claims to answer 80% of phone calls in less than a minute and promises emergency assistance from a claims adjuster within two hours, day or night.

If you have a problem that customer service can’t help you with, Square One Insurance publishes the email addresses and phone numbers of its divisional heads so you can reach out to them directly.

For the most serious concerns, Square One employs an ombudsperson to who you can appeal. As already mentioned, Square One Insurance doesn’t have offices in the community, so if you prefer to meet your insurance advisor in person, you will need to choose a different provider.

For better or worse, Square One Insurance has staked its claim exclusively in the home insurance space. If you have a unique requirement, you’re likely to find coverage with Square One even if other companies have turned you away.

The home insurance broker doesn’t offer any other kinds of policies like car and life insurance, meaning customers in Alberta and Ontario who want to keep all of their insurance coverage with a single company will have to look elsewhere.

Finally, Square One Insurance doesn’t underwrite its own policies. Instead, it’s an authorized brokerage selling insurance provided by another company. While this is a common business model, customers will still want to compare home insurance quotes from multiple providers in addition to Square One.

If you don’t mind taking care of your home insurance coverage primarily online, Square One Insurance is a good option. It has a wide range of coverages and a very user-friendly online system. Customer support is available by email, live chat, and phone so you’ll never be stuck on your own.

Frequently Asked Questions

The insurance industry in Canada is carefully regulated and Square One Insurance is no exception. The insurance broker is licensed and regulated by the provincial authorities where it does business.

Its underwriter, The  Mutual Fire Insurance Company  of British Columbia, is regulated by the British Columbia Financial Services Authority ( BCFSA ) and insured by the Property and Casualty Insurance Compensation Corporation ( PACICC ).

Square One Insurance is available in the Canadian provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario.

The company conducts all of its business from its main office in Vancouver and only offers customer service by phone and online.

There’s no law in Canada requiring you to have tenant insurance or home insurance, but chances are that you will be contractually required to get insurance by one or more of the other parties involved in you having a home.

Landlords, mortgage companies, condo corporations, and others can all require you to carry adequate insurance, and they have the power to evict you from your home if you’re in breach of that condition.

I spent $2,000 for 7 nights in a 179-square-foot room on one of the world's largest cruise ships. Take a look inside my cabin.

  • I booked a stateroom on Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas, one of the biggest cruise ships.
  • For $2,000 a week, the 179-square-foot cabin had a private bathroom, a king-size bed, and a view.
  • I thought I'd feel cramped in the room, but it had everything I needed and left no space unused.

Insider Today

In April 2022, I cruised on board Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas . At the time, it was the largest cruise ship in the world , but the title has since been replaced by Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas .

During my voyage, the ship sailed to Roatán, Honduras; Cozumel and Costa Maya in Mexico; and Royal Caribbean's private island in the Bahamas .

For $2,000, I spent seven nights in an ocean-view stateroom on deck eight. The cruise was on sale, as it was originally priced at $3,000. Take a look inside the 179-square-foot space.

My room was a mid-tier cabin at the front of deck eight.

square one travel

I booked a mid-tier room — a step above interior staterooms , which have no window. It's a category below staterooms with a balcony , and two steps below a suite.

My cabin was on the same deck as Central Park, an outdoor space with 20,000 plants.

square one travel

I thought it was the most relaxing area on the ship, so I enjoyed being close by.

When I stepped inside my stateroom, I was surprised at how big it felt.

square one travel

Right away, I thought the cabin made great use of a small space.

To operate most of the electricity in the room, I had to insert my room key into a slot on the wall.

square one travel

I appreciated the energy-saving system.

On one side of the room, I had a mirror and a desk with several outlets to charge electronics with USB, American, and European ports.

square one travel

I thought the desk was useful for eating, as well as storing daily flyers about the day's events.

Next to the desk, a set of drawers included a cabinet with a minifridge inside.

square one travel

The desk drawers were mostly empty aside from a hair dryer, which I didn't end up using.

Across from the desk, I had a couch positioned in between two closets.

square one travel

Inside each closet, I found a rack of hangers, shelving, and a small safe. I thought it was plenty of space for a weeklong journey

Next to the couch and desk area, a small bathroom used clever storage hacks, like placing the trash can and toilet paper under the counter.

square one travel

In the bathroom, there were two glasses, a bar of soap, and a two-in-one hair and body wash.

At the top of the shower, a pullout clothing line was useful for drying my bathing suits.

Each night, my stateroom attendant replenished towels and brought flyers and schedules for the next day.

square one travel

Sometimes, the towels were folded creatively to look like animals.

I noticed that my king-size bed at the back of the room was actually two twin beds pushed together.

square one travel

All Royal Caribbean cabins come with this configuration, according to its website , so they may be separated for additional guests. I often woke up in the crevice.

A large flat-screen TV was mounted across from the bed with storage hooks below.

square one travel

Skinny nightstands on either side of the bed held lamps, charging ports, and a room phone on one side.

Because I booked an ocean-view room, I was able to look out over the front of the ship from a window above my bed.

square one travel

The window was equipped with an electronic shade that could be opened during the day for grand views and closed when I was ready to sleep.

While I thought the room might have been a tight space for a couple with a lot of luggage or a family, it was just right for me.

square one travel

And watching the sun rise over the Caribbean Sea from the comfort of my room was the best part.

At Seattle’s Smith Tower, 110-year-old elevators travel through time and space

THE SMITH TOWER opened on July 4, 1914, during the wild summer that kicked off the first World War, between the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand in June and the declaration of hostilities in August. At 38 stories and 462 feet tall, it was, at the time, the tallest building west of the Mississippi.

The skyscraper was built adjacent to Pioneer Square, a major fixture in a growing city rebuilding its downtown from the ashes of the 1889 Great Seattle Fire.

Smith Tower sits on the corner of Second Avenue and Yesler Way, a corner variously known as Wirth Corner or Bailey Corner before the tower’s construction. Today, tourists and downtown workers mill about the area, which contains many of Seattle’s most notable buildings and, it must be noted, also is sometimes quite unsafe.

The building itself consists of two parts: a low-rise portion that goes up to floor 21, and the high-rise extension (the “tower” part of the construction) topped with a distinctive, arrow-shaped triangular roof. While the building’s plaque lists Smith Tower at 42 stories, that is a bit of an overstatement — the builders claimed it was  technically  42 of what, by measure, could be considered a story, but the building has always had a maximum of 38 actual  floors — even fewer at the time of its construction.

Today,   the very top of the tower holds a private penthouse, and the 35th floor of the high rise — reached by one of seven still-working, 110-year-old elevators — houses a beautifully vintage 1920s chinoiserie-style bar and observation deck, a space that still commands striking views of downtown Seattle, shipping cranes and Elliott Bay.

Smith Tower by the numbers

7: Number of elevators

Smith Tower is a work of art, its ornate construction and interior fixtures a combination of neoclassical and Art Nouveau sensibilities, and its elevators are similarly gorgeous: century-old bronze-toned wrought-iron birdcages lining the hallway enrobed in pearly, fondantlike Mexican onyx, topped by a row of carved Native American chieftain heads watching over the proceedings like sentinels.

The enigmatic initials LCS grace every set of ornate elevator doors, a nod to the original builder, the eponymous Lyman Cornelius Smith (of Smith-Corona typewriter fame), whose fortune was built on firearms and typewriters, the modern version of the pen vs. the sword. But the ostentatious initials are far from a statement of vanity; they’re actually a statement of love: Smith died in 1910, and his son Burns Lyman Smith had more than 50,000 instances of his father’s initials placed throughout the building in tribute.

Up until 2016-17, all the elevators were manually operated. Each working car had an attendant inside who would raise and lower the apparatus using a hefty lever. Originally, seven of the elevators serviced the first 21 floors only (today, it is six, as one is out of commission), and for those on the bottom floor, it was a matter of choosing an elevator and telling the operator your desired floor. For those in the high-rise, a call to the concierge desk would result in the sole elevator that serviced those lofty heights being sent up to fetch you. But for those on an intermediate floor, the low-rise, calling a car would mean standing in the elevator hallway and shouting through the cage at the operators as they passed up and down through the shaft, until someone obligingly pulled the carriage to a halt and admitted the passengers inside, like hailing a taxi on a busy street.

Unlike with modern elevators, whose heavy doors are so often unceremoniously halted by an arm thrust between them, sticking one’s arm through the gap of the Smith Tower elevators was unwise: just as likely to damage the door mechanism as the arm in question. To request someone hold the elevator, guests would call out, “One more!” regardless of how many people actually needed to climb in.

One forgets, in a predigital world, how much of one’s life in a city involved yelling.

These days, the elevators look as they did back in 1914, with a few modifications, such as modern earthquake sensors and safety glass, copper-sheeted back walls and cleverly hidden escape hatches added in the 1940s to conform to fire code. One of the original motors is on display, a green sleeping giant that looks like an oversized sewing machine, and the levers and wheels used by the manual operators are extant as well, though they are now entirely for show.

Each elevator is like a wee Jules Verne time machine taking paying guests from the unrelenting modernity at ground level to the glamorous days of yore preserved in the upstairs bar, an experience complete with vintage cocktails. And while the cars are now operated by modern motors, safety key cards and buttons, at least one still features an attendant — now most often an extremely knowledgeable “guest experience guide” named Richard Phillips, who spends his days riding up and down from the heart of Seattle to its lofty heights, giving short elevator tours or roaming about the building on longer historical tours for guests who come to sip a vintage cocktail and enjoy some historical context about a building that was central to Seattle’s Prohibition era.

While the view from the observation deck morphs day by day as the city grows around it, the view from the inside of a century-old elevator never changes.
