Excellent QE2 Heritage Tour

My wife and myself had a really great tour on the QE2 in Dubai. After a brief chat in reception we were brought onboard by Greg our tour guide who had a great knowledge and passion for the ship. The tour brought us to interesting parts of the ship where Greg would have an interesting fact or story. The tour was so relaxing and the fact that you could stay on the ship and explore after the tour was great. Greg is a fantastic tour guide, you could listen to him all day. I would highly recommend this tour.

Mr Jakaria his very friendly and very good I will happy for his service thank u so much. He is very helpful and took me to the room when I lost in the boat

Excellent tour with a friendly, humorous and knowledgeable guide, Craig. We're able to explore the ship after the tour at own pace. Well worth it.

Visited the QE2 for a combined Afternoon Tea and Heritage Tour on a Friday in September 2023. Booking was online, to book the combined experience required emailing at the link provided and online prepayment at the provided link. After arriving slightly early we were guided to seating in the waiting area prior to being lead to the Queens Grill onboard. The service was unrushed and the quality excellent for the Britannia Afternoon Tea. As an indulgence we partook of the 1969 QE2 signature gin cocktail (so good we had two). The only let down, yet understandable, was the tea was brewed in bags not loose leaf, but then we all have personal preferences After finishing Afternoon tea we exited the ship by the forward exit and returned to the terminal where we were met by Craig who provided a knowledgeable and engaging tour of the ship from the mid ships first class reception through the vessel, including the preserved bridge. A great experience to see this restored classic and hear some of the stories behind it's and Cunard's history going back to the early days of ocean liners. Was this value for money? In terms of Dubai prices I would suggest yes, particularly if you have an interest in the historic and fine quality afternoon tea.

We had a final morning to fill on the last day of our holiday in Dubai, and chose a late morning tour followed by lunch on the QE2. Brendan has recently taken over as curator of the museum on the QE2 and gave us a fascinating insight into the history of the ship and into the process of curating a collection. Thoroughly enjoyable 90 minute tour of the ship followed by a nice lunch in the on-board restaurant. Recommended.

The closest metro station to Mina Rashid is Metro M2. You can also take the bus — C1 and X92 — till the closest bus stop. Some of the closest stations to Mina Rashid include Falcon Intersection, Raffa and Al Ghubaiba.

I did the heritage tour today, very interesting to learn more about QE2 and to visit some rooms and other areas. I am sure in the future we will see the engine room etc.. for now just the upper decks. For 150aed as part as the tour there is 100 aed voucher for food and beverage. I chose Q cafe. Simple salads and toasties/paninis and for now not expensive. I liked it. The cafe is set in the main entrance outside the ship; good design and good service. Will go again if I can. Overall good experience, super happy Dubai kept QE2, it will now become one of the favorite spots for tourism in the near future.

- Sylvie B, Tripadvisor September 2018

Drove up from Abu Dhabi to have a day in Dubai, and decided to investigate the Heritage Tour on the QE2, now docked at Port Rashid. Immediately directed to reception where we purchased our tickets, DHS 150 per person (DHS 100 redeemable on food) for the 13:00 tour. We were a little bit early but were able to wander around some of the exhibits. The tour started promptly at 13:00 with the tour guide, Peter, who was excellent. Having worked on the vessel for many years was able to provide a phenomenal amount of information on the ship, the history and life on board. The tour lasted an hour and a quarter and included a detailed review of the exhibits in the reception area onshore and then the tour of a few decks aboard. I would have liked to have been able to walk on the open deck, seen the bridge and viewed astern but these were not open. There was not quite enough time to redeem our vouchers at The Lido and we ended up at the Golden Lion for 'refreshments'.

All aboard the QE2: New bridge tour puts visitors in the captain’s seat

It’s the first time the famous ocean liner has opened its bridge to the public in its 52-year history.

Once reserved for senior crew and VVIPs – David Bowie and Nelson Mandela are among those who have walked the hallowed deck – Queen Elizabeth 2  has opened its bridge to the public for the first time in 52 years.

The famous ocean liner, now permanently docked at Dubai’s Port Rashid, where it operates as a floating hotel, restaurant and museum, launched its Bridge Tour on Thursday, February 20.

"Back in the day, the bridge of the ship was a place that no one really got to go to - not even those in service. In fact, there were only three reasons you ever got called to the bridge: for a meeting with a captain or a senior officer, to receive an award, or to get a telling off," explains Peter Warwick, the tour manager onboard the  QE2 .

Heritage tours of the ship are already available, but the Bridge Tours differ by going into detail about nautical facts, while giving visitors a behind-the-scenes look at the commanding station of the ship and its old maritime equipment.

DUBAI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES , Feb 20 – 2020 :- Different control panels in the Wheelhouse at the QE 2 in Dubai. QE2 recently launched Bridge tour for the public. (Pawan Singh / The National) For Lifestyle. Story by Janice Rodrigues

The one-hour tour starts at the main lobby, where customers are greeted by their tour guide and given a basic rundown of the history of the ship. They are then led through notable areas, before being taken up to the main bridge.

The wheel house, which contains the steering mechanism of the ship, is the first area on the bridge to be explored. Besides getting an in-depth look at the captain’s wheel, the room features radars, the telegraph (a system used for communication between the bridge and the engineers in the control room), bow thruster controls and a gyro compass. In short, it’s a history buff’s dream. “If you visit the bridge of modern ships, you’ll find everything looking quite different – things are much more modern now, more electronic,” says Warwick.

Courtesy QE2

He also points out various devices, such as the inclinometer, a device used to point and measure the angles of the earth’s surface. “If that goes over 30, then you’re probably having very rough weather,” he says. “In fact, on September 7, 1995, we were hit by a wave around 40 feet, and water engulfed the bow of the ship and flooded the bridge. It was terribly frightening. I was there at the time, and thought we were going to drown.”

The tour then moves captain's day room - bare-bones quarters once used to "save the captain making a trip to his quarters if he was busy", before heading to the flag room, complete with its original sewing machine. This room was exclusive used to create or fix flags that were being flown on board the QE2 .

DUBAI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES , Feb 20 – 2020 :- View of the Captain’s Sea Cabin at the QE 2 in Dubai. QE2 recently launched Bridge tour for the public. (Pawan Singh / The National) For Lifestyle. Story by Janice Rodrigues

Visitors get a further glimpse of life out at sea with the chart room and a private meeting room, before heading to the outdoor decks (there are two: port-side and starboard-side), all the while hearing trivia about former staff and famous guests.

The tour also gives visitors a rare glimpse into ship’s control rooms, which are still operating today. The area, which has to be manned by two people at all time, monitors water levels and electricity to ensure everything is in, well, ship shape.

An hour flies by, with the excursion ending in the ship’s lobby. For Warwick, the launch of the tour is another spectacular reason that the ship is keeping history alive. “Had I flown here last year to find a neon hotel, I would have flown straight back to London. For me, personally, it's history in the making.”

It has undergone massive internal refurbishment to cover the entire ship into one huge leisure destination. It was purchased by the investment arm of the Dubai Government, Isthitmar, and Nakheel had taken the responsibility to refurbish and manage this mighty ship as one of the centerpieces of Dubai’s already-known ultra-cool dining options.

The QE2 Dubai – History, and Facts

QE2 is an ocean liner that was built for Cunard Line. It came into operation in 1969, and Cunard Line operated it as a transatlantic liner and a cruise ship for almost 40 years until the company replaced it with RMS Queen Mary in 2008. In its 40 years of sailing, QE2 has passed many landmarks and records. It was the most visible cruise ship ever. Some interesting facts about QE2;

·         At the time of retirement, it was 924 feet long

·         It carried more than 2.5 million passengers in its 40 years of cruising

·         In 1971, it saved 500 passengers from the burning French line Antilles

·         QE2 was once disabled from sailing when jellyfish were sucked into and blocked seawater intake

·         QE2 participated in the famed Falkland war as a British troop carrier

·         At the time of retirement, it has sailed more than 5.6 million miles and 806 transatlantic crossings

·         QE2 has gone around the globe at least 25 times

·         QE2 also boasted the world’s largest cinema in the sea that could seat 531 guests at a time

· QE2’s shopping arcade has over 11 boutiques, including a branch of Harrods.

The plan is to convert this majestic beauty into a 600-room 5, stars floating hotel with restaurants, a shopping mall, and an aqua park.

Dubai’s Extraordinary Flooding: Here’s What to Know

Images of a saturated desert metropolis startled the world, prompting talk of cloud seeding, climate change and designing cities for intensified weather.

  • Share full article

A dozen or so cars, buses and trucks sit in axle-deep water on a wide, flooded highway.

By Raymond Zhong

Scenes of flood-ravaged neighborhoods in one of the planet’s driest regions have stunned the world this week. Heavy rains in the United Arab Emirates and Oman submerged cars, clogged highways and killed at least 21 people. Flights out of Dubai’s airport, a major global hub, were severely disrupted.

The downpours weren’t a freak event — forecasters anticipated the storms several days out and issued warnings. But they were certainly unusual. Here’s what to know.

Heavy rain there is rare, but not unheard-of.

On average, the Arabian Peninsula receives a scant few inches of rain a year, although scientists have found that a sizable chunk of that precipitation falls in infrequent but severe bursts, not as periodic showers.

U.A.E. officials said the 24-hour rain total on Tuesday was the country’s largest since records there began in 1949 . But parts of the nation had experienced an earlier round of thunderstorms just last month.

Oman, with its coastline on the Arabian Sea, is also vulnerable to tropical cyclones. Past storms there have brought torrential rain, powerful winds and mudslides, causing extensive damage.

Global warming is projected to intensify downpours.

Stronger storms are a key consequence of human-caused global warming. As the atmosphere gets hotter, it can hold more moisture, which can eventually make its way down to the earth as rain or snow.

But that doesn’t mean rainfall patterns are changing in precisely the same way across every corner of the globe.

In their latest assessment of climate research , scientists convened by the United Nations found there wasn’t enough data to have firm conclusions about rainfall trends in the Arabian Peninsula and how climate change was affecting them. The researchers said, however, that if global warming were to be allowed to continue worsening in the coming decades, extreme downpours in the region would quite likely become more intense and more frequent.

The role of cloud seeding isn’t clear.

The U.A.E. has for decades worked to increase rainfall and boost water supplies by seeding clouds. Essentially, this involves shooting particles into clouds to encourage the moisture to gather into larger, heavier droplets, ones that are more likely to fall as rain or snow.

Cloud seeding and other rain-enhancement methods have been tried across the world, including in Australia, China, India, Israel, South Africa and the United States. Studies have found that these operations can, at best, affect precipitation modestly — enough to turn a downpour into a bigger downpour, but probably not a drizzle into a deluge.

Still, experts said pinning down how much seeding might have contributed to this week’s storms would require detailed study.

“In general, it is quite a challenge to assess the impact of seeding,” said Luca Delle Monache, a climate scientist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, Calif. Dr. Delle Monache has been leading efforts to use artificial intelligence to improve the U.A.E.’s rain-enhancement program.

An official with the U.A.E.’s National Center of Meteorology, Omar Al Yazeedi, told news outlets this week that the agency didn’t conduct any seeding during the latest storms. His statements didn’t make clear, however, whether that was also true in the hours or days before.

Mr. Al Yazeedi didn’t respond to emailed questions from The New York Times on Thursday, and Adel Kamal, a spokesman for the center, didn’t immediately have further comment.

Cities in dry places just aren’t designed for floods.

Wherever it happens, flooding isn’t just a matter of how much rain comes down. It’s also about what happens to all that water once it’s on the ground — most critically, in the places people live.

Cities in arid regions often aren’t designed to drain very effectively. In these areas, paved surfaces block rain from seeping into the earth below, forcing it into drainage systems that can easily become overwhelmed.

One recent study of Sharjah , the capital of the third-largest emirate in the U.A.E., found that the city’s rapid growth over the past half century had made it vulnerable to flooding at far lower levels of rain than before.

Omnia Al Desoukie contributed reporting.

Dubai floods: Chaos, queues and submerged cars after UAE hit by record rains

Passengers report being stranded in the desert city as the international hub struggles in the wake of unusually heavy rain

Don’t blame cloud seeding for the Dubai floods

Dubai is wrestling with the aftermath of extraordinary torrential rains that flooded the desert city, with people describing harrowing stories of spending the night in their cars, and air passengers enduring chaotic scenes at airports.

Up to 259.5mm (10.2in) of rain fell on the usually arid country of the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday, the most since records began 75 years ago . The state-run WAM news agency called the rains on Tuesday “a historic weather event” that surpassed “anything documented since the start of data collection in 1949”.

As the sun returned on Wednesday, along with it came stories of people stuck in cars and offices through an arduous night.

“It was one of the most horrific situations I had ever experienced,” said one Dubai resident in his 30s, who did not want to give his name, after his 15-minute commute turned into a 12-hour ordeal on flooded roads.

'I want to go home': passengers stranded by Dubai extreme floods – video

At Dubai’s airport, one of the busiest for international travel, with nearly every flight repeatedly delayed, Emirates passengers were told to stay away “unless absolutely necessary”.

Frustration from those already there began to build.

A large crowd formed at a connections desk, clapping and whistling in protest as they waited for information.

“They are completely lost, it’s complete chaos – no information, nothing,” fumed one passenger, who did not want to be named, after a 12-hour wait, Agence France-Presse reported.

Standing water lapped on taxiways as aircraft landed. One couple called the situation “absolute carnage”. They spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity in order to speak freely in a country with strict laws that criminalise critical speech. “You cannot get a taxi. There’s people sleeping in the Metro station. There’s people sleeping in the airport.”

Flash flooding in Oman and UAE hit by heaviest rainfall in 75 years – video

The BBC reported other passengers were diverted to Dubai World Central Airport – also known as Al Maktoum airport – telling the broadcaster they had been “living on duty free” and that water was in short supply.

One furious British traveller told PA Media that once his flight was diverted to Dubai World Central, he had not been given any food or water either. “It’s just been an absolute disaster. We’re stuck here and seven hours without a single update is inexcusable.”

Emirates, Dubai’s flagship airline, posted on X on Wednesday night: “Customers should expect delays with departures and arrivals” and that while some passengers had been able to get to their destinations “we are aware that many are still waiting to get on flights”.

Cars sit abandoned in a flooded street

The airline cancelled all check-ins and announced that it would continue to suspend services until Thursday morning, apologising for the disruptions. Those on FlyDubai, Emirates’ low-cost sister airline, also faced delays.

Dubai airport posted on X early on Thursday that flights had resumed from Terminal 1 but urged people to travel to the airport only if they had a confirmed booking, as flights continued to be “delayed and disrupted”.

Paul Griffiths, the airport’s CEO, acknowledged the issues with flooding on Wednesday. “It remains an incredibly challenging time. In living memory, I don’t think anyone has ever seen conditions like it,” Griffiths told the state-owned talk radio station Dubai Eye.

Neighbouring countries were also hit by heavy rains earlier this week, including Oman, where 20 people have died, including 10 schoolchildren swept away in a vehicle with an adult.

Soldiers were deployed to badly affected areas of the sultanate, which rests on the eastern edge of the Arabian peninsula, to evacuate people trapped by flooding.

Schools will stay closed in Dubai until next week, authorities said, underscoring the difficulty of the clean-up.

In an unusual direct intervention, the UAE president, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, ordered “authorities to quickly work on studying the condition of infrastructure throughout the UAE and to limit the damage caused”, official media said.

The president also gave orders for affected families to be transferred to safe locations, said a statement carried by the WAM news agency.

Dubai’s ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, wrote on X about “efforts being made by teams of citizens and residents that continue day and night” as the city’s media office posted video overlayed with dramatic music of officials conferring in groups and water pumping appearing to take place in the background.

Photos too were posted of what it said showed water flooding into desert areas.

Similar scenes were visible around the Gulf state including in Sharjah, in neighbouring Dubai, where people waded through main streets and paddled around on makeshift boats.

At least one person was killed in the flooding. A 70-year-old man who was swept away in his car in Ras al-Khaimah, one of the country’s seven emirates, according to police.

The UAE government announced that remote working for most federal government employees had been extended into another day because of the impact.

Heavy rains lash Middle East, disrupting flights in Dubai after killing 20 in region

Authorities and communities across the United Arab Emirates were clearing debris on Wednesday after heavy rain subsided late on Tuesday.

Dubai, the Middle East's financial centre, has been paralysed by torrential rain that has caused floods across the UAE and Bahrain, leaving 19 dead in Oman and at least one in the UAE.

Dubai International Airport, the world's busiest air hub for international passengers, diverted scores of incoming flights amid the flooding. DBX was expecting more than 100 flight arrivals on Tuesday evening.

But the airport announced a halt to arrivals before announcing a "gradual resumption" more than two hours later.

Videos on social media showed planes taxiing across an apron flooded with standing water.

Departure flights remained in operation during the evening but were plagued with delays and cancellations. Roads to the airport were also badly flooded.

Similar scenes were repeated across Dubai and elsewhere in the UAE as the oil-rich Gulf state, better known for its arid climate and intense summer heat, reeled from the storm.

Year's worth of rain in 24 hours

Flagship shopping centres Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates both suffered flooding.

Water was ankle-deep in at least one Dubai Metro station, according to images posted on social media.

Some roads collapsed, residential communities were hit by heavy flooding and many householders reported leaks from roofs, doors and windows.

Schools were shut across the UAE and were expected to remain closed on Wednesday, when further storms are forecast. Dubai's government also extended remote working for its employees into Wednesday.

Some inland areas of the UAE recorded more than 80 millimetres of rain over the 24 hours to 8am, approaching the annual average of about 100mm.

The National Center for Meteorology "urged residents to take all the precautions … and to stay away from areas of flooding and water accumulation".

The Asian Champions League football semifinal between the UAE's Al Ain and Saudi side Al Hilal, due to be hosted in Al Ain, was postponed for 24 hours because of the weather.

Climate-fuelled flooding

Bahrain, to the UAE's north-west, was also hit by heavy rain and flooding after being pummelled by thunder and lightning overnight.

"I like to play in the rain but for the first time it scares me," said nine-year-old Ali Hassan, as he helped his mother clear water from outside their house in Bahrain's capital, Manama.

The storms descended on the UAE, Bahrain and parts of Qatar after hitting Oman, where they caused deadly floods and left dozens stranded.

A child's body was recovered on Tuesday, taking the death toll to 18 with two people missing, emergency authorities told the official Oman News Agency.

Nine schoolchildren and three adults died when their vehicles were swept away in flash floods, the news agency reported on Sunday.

Both Oman and the UAE, which hosted last year's COP28 UN climate talks, have previously warned that global warming is likely to lead to more flooding.

Friederike Otto, a leader in the field of assessing the role of climate change on specific extreme weather events, said it was likely that global warming played a part in this week's rain.

"It is highly likely that the deadly and destructive rain in Oman and Dubai was made heavier by human-caused climate change," said Ms Otto, of the Grantham Institute for Climate Change at Imperial College London.
