In order to have some good quality diving, you need a reef close by… Well it turns out that there is a great reef just off the coast of Tela that is in extremely healthy conditions! The Capiro Reef has been acclaimed as the best preserved reef off the coast of Central America’s Caribbean shoreline. (This of course excludes the Bay Islands of Honduras, and the Corn Islands of Nicaragua , which offer outstanding diving conditions). Tela Dive Center offers a full service PADI dive shop, including certification courses, diving expeditions, equipment rental and sales. They can also offer diving trips to the Bay Island of Utila , which is not far away.

Indura offers a Par 72 18 hole Gary Player Championship course, and Telamar Resort has a 9 hole course which originally belonged to the Tela Railroad Company. Now how is that for a true adventure playing golf in an authentic Banana Republic Golf course? Now you know that Golf is certainly on the list of things to do in Tela!

Los Micos Lagoon and a visit to Los Olingos

Los Micos Lagoon is an extensive lagoon system that is part of the Jeannette Kawas National Park . The lagoon is separated from the ocean by a narrow sandbar that provides just enough space for the most authentic of all Garifuna Villages in the World: Miami. This place is a far cry from Miami, Florida! It is truly close to an idyllic paradise, but with few services. The beaches are quite spectacular, and there are a few spots where you can have a meal.

Los Olingos is a beautiful eco property located on the mountain side of Los Micos Lagoon. For a great day experience, and better yet, for an overnight experience arrange for a stay at Los Olingos. Your stay will include a boat trip from Miami, and across the mangrove canals through the lagoon. A visit to los Olingos is one of my very personal favorite things to do in Tela.

Enjoy the Beach

Tela is best known for its beaches, and this is what most people come here for. So chances are that if you decided on Tela, you came here because of the beaches. Our best advice is: enjoy the beaches! If you are not staying in a beachfront hotel with direct access to the beaches, there are several different alternatives that you work on.

The beach in front of the pedestrian street in Tela is always a great alternative. This beach offers a variety of restaurants and bars within the pedestrian street. Simply choose the type of food you would like and enjoy the street side seating here. As with any public beach in the World, keep an eye on your belongings and bring only what you need with you. Leave your valuables, personal documents and the rest of your belongings in your hotel.

The new Playa Equipada, or equipped beach refers to the beach area located in front of the old Tela Railroad Company accounting building. This beach is also adjacent to the Municipal dock. The beach now has a variety of services and is regularly patrolled by security and protected with cameras. This means you can enjoy the beach safely!

A last alternative is located on the beach adjacent to Telamar Resort, towards the west. This beach is also provides diverse services, such as a toilette’s, boardwalks and little thatched roof champas to provide a refuge from the sun.

Farther out towards the Garifuna communities located west of Tela you will find other beachfront areas that you can enjoy. As with anywhere in the World, avoid a completely solitary beach. In the unlikely happening of someone trying to mug you, you will be completely on your own. The Garifuna Communities are very safe, but do not try to get out to them walking or on a bicycle.

THE FIRST SPANISH CITY OF HONDURAS

Tela was founded in 1534 and declared a municipality in 1876. Yet, Tela thrived due to the banana activity with the installation of the Tela Rail Road Co . in what is now the Villas Telamar hotel complex, where you can still appreciate the type of architecture introduced by the company.

Tela is located in the bay bearing the same name, and framed by the Jeannette Kawas Park , where you will find the Túnel del Amor or Tunnel of Love ; Puerto Escondido or Laguna Azul ; and, Punta Izopo , with vegetation very typical of these coastal areas. Tela is surrounded by Garífuna communities that came from Punta Gorda in Roatán , where we now find the community of Triunfo de la Cruz . During this time, Doctor Wilson Popenoe started what is now the Lancetilla Botanical Garden , becoming the second most important botanical garden in the continent, since it houses tropical plants from all over the planet.

Sub-aquatic research was recently conducted in front of the community of San Juan to verify the presence of an elkhorn reef bank, and according to the studies, its status was rated as very good.

The Cusuco National Park is a beautiful natural space rich in biodiversity. Very close to the city, the park is located on the slopes of the Sierra del Merendón . Two hundred and seventy species of birds, 93 species of reptiles and amphibians, 35 species of bats, and a large number of mammal species have been monitored. You must not miss this.

Tela offers Garifuna communities, white sand beaches, and a variety of hotels, restaurants, and hidden places where nature can be appreciated, while you rest on a virgin and quiet beach.

Tela is a city in Honduras . It is a sleepy coastal town of 100,000 people (2015) with nice beaches, in a region inhabited by the Afro-Caribbean communities called the Garifuna.

The Garifuna live on communally owned land around the area and have their own distinct language and culture. It has been slowly but surely working its way to becoming an important beach destination.

Tela has been the site of a pilot program aimed to create the Tourist Police. The result has been outstanding, with a force of 20 bilingual, friendly tourist police officers.

By plane [ edit ].

Less than 90 km east of San Pedro Sula 's international airport, and connected by an excellent paved highway, Tela is very easily reached from San Pedro Sula and El Progreso .

By car [ edit ]

If you are driving your own car, the driving time is under one hour from San Pedro Sula.

By bus [ edit ]

If you are taking the public bus, the classiest option would be to choose Hedman Alas, a first class service coach operator that has non stop service from San Pedro Sula to Tela; otherwise, there are several companies offering comfortable direct non-stop buses to La Ceiba . A ticket from SPS to Tela should cost L100. Just let the driver know you wish to get off at the entrance to Tela. From this point, you can easily catch a taxi (L30/pp) to take you to the beaches, Tela's main attraction.

Get around [ edit ]

Once in Tela, like in most Honduran cities, the taxi services will provide a reliable way to get around. Also Tela is a great place to walk around and explore the beach and downtown areas.

A taxi from the town to the botanical gardens should cost L100 for two people.

The term "banana republic" came from Honduras, when American and other fruit companies held great political sway. A rail service from the interior of the country brought produce to Tela to be shipped to the United States. Today the pier and train station that were central to that trade have been abandoned. They are within 90 m (100 yards) of the bridge in downtown Tela and are a great destination for any avid photographer. The pier is also a great adventure (not for small children). There you can see local fisherman trying there luck at the end of the pier. The best time to go is usually a weekend as the pier becomes a gathering point for many people, especially at sunset when the view is extraordinary. Go to the beach! Tela has a beautiful coastline, with tall palms, white sand, and exceedingly warm water. Make sure your belongings are watched at all times--either by you or a friend or family member--as unattended items can be taken by passing thieves. On the whole however, the beach experience is wonderful, and not to be missed.

Triunfo de la Cruz . For those looking for an off-the-beaten-path experience in Tela, a trip to the Garifuna community of Triunfo de la Cruz is a necessity. Located just a few miles up the beach from Tela, the area has not been invaded by the hotel industries. Small beach restaurants often have changing cabins, showers and beach shacks for tourists to relax. Some will even supply you with hammocks for your day of relaxation. A bus from the center bus station or a taxi are your best way to get to this area. Walking is not recommended. You could try Garifuna Tours (+504 24482904).

Tela's Garifuna community provides some of the best items to purchase in Tela. Strolling along the beach area, tourists will surely find people selling their hand made crafts and jewelry. Shell and shark tooth jewelry, coconut shell jewelry, and the more common hand woven jewelry, are the most prevalent items being sold.

A great purchase is the coconut bread or coconut candy (called 'tabla'). Women can be found carrying large buckets on their heads, which often contain the delicious baked goods.

Eat [ edit ]

One of the best restaurants in the area is a small pizza place right near the oceanfront bridge in downtown Tela. A new patio out back of the restaurant is right on an inner-coastal waterway, which enhance the dining experience. It also has a play area and swings for those traveling with young children. The pizza is affordable and delicious.

In addition, Hondurans say that the baleadas in the Tela and La Ceiba areas are the best in the country. A baleada is a thick tortilla with refried beans, avocados, scrambled eggs, fresh crema, butter and other ingredients such as chicken and sausage. They are fantastic.

A trip to Tela can not be completed with out trying the fresh seafood of the region. Sopa de Caracol (conch soup) and sopa de jaiba (crab soup) are well known treats in local restaurants. Locals have their opinions about which seafood restaurant is better, but they are not always the same. The people of Tela are very helpful (and use to wondering tourists) if you would like a recommendation.

Most hotels have their own restaurants, often inside of a secure compound for those that do not wish to walk around outside of the security of their hotels.

Drink [ edit ]

For the brave tourist, the Garifuna community will be happy share their homemade brew called Gifi (a coconut liquor).

For the more traditional experience, the beach front offers several bars. In addition most restaurants will have local beers and mixed drinks.

For those looking for a non-alcoholic beverage, a fresh, cold coconut will surely hit the spot. While at the main beach areas, someone will surely find you at some point and offer you a fresh coconut to drink from. It is part of the Tela experience and should at least be tried before leaving.

• The Bay Islands . Take a yellow bus to La Ceiba , the launching point for ferries to Utila and Roatan . The 2½-hour bus ride leaves every half hour from the station near Calle 9 and Avenida 9, and costs L55. Be ready to leave Tela no later than noon, as the last ferry to the islands leaves at 16:00 and the ferry terminal is around a 30-minute taxi ride from the bus station.

Tela Travel Guide

Tela is a delightful town on the northern Caribbean coast of Honduras, one of the country’s most attractive destinations. Tela is an absolute beauty: sweeping beaches along the coast, miles on end of African palm plantations to its west, botanical gardens to its south, and vast stretches of national forest and wildlife reserves to its east. Moreover, the tourist infrastructure in Tela is highly developed, full of first-rate hotels and restaurants. If Tela is not on your Honduran radar, it certainly should be. History Tela is one of the few major towns of Honduras not founded by the Spanish. While the Spanish settled in the nearby village of Triunfo de la Cruz in 1524, Tela itself was not established until the early 20th century by the American company, Tela Railroad Company. Tela Railroad Company, later known as the United Fruit Company, set up their Honduran headquarters in Tela and stayed in the town until 1970 when it moved its base to La Lima. As a result of the United Fruit Company, Tela became an important port during the 20th century. Today, Tela is one of the more modern tourist destinations of Honduras.

Culture Tela is one of the best places to learn more about the Garífuna culture. It is one of the few Central American towns on the Caribbean coast with many Garífuna villas nearby. You can visit Ensenada aldea, the San Juan aldea, the Triunfo de la Cruz, the Tornabé aldea, and the tiny caserio of Miami – all great places to experience Garífuna life and culture. The latter, Miami, is the most traditional of the villages and its people actually still live in thatched huts. In both Triunfo de la Cruz and Tornabé, you’ll also find great beach and waterfront restaurants and eateries.

Of course, in Tela itself, there are museums dedicated to this indigenous group. The Museo Garífuna, for example, near the Rio Tela showcases Garífuna music and their religious customs.

Attractions Most of the attractions in Tela are natural. One of the few man-made attractions is the Jardin Botanico Lancetilla, the second largest botanical garden in the world. It was left by the United Fruit Company as a parting gift after the company moved its headquarters in 1970 to La Lima. The garden is home to more than 1,000 varieties of plants, each marked by their name and country of origin. The garden is a habitat for many species of birds as well, including various colorful parrots.

Tela is also surrounded by a few national parks and reserves worth exploring. The Parque Nacional Jeanette Kawas (or Parque Nacional Punta Sal) encompasses tropical forests, shady lagoons, coral reefs, and mangrove swamps and plays habitat to many howler monkeys, white-faced monkeys, colorful parrots, and vine snakes.

The Los Curumos trail is a great path for hikers, trekkers, and even swimmers, snorkelers, and divers since the path leads to the shores of Puerto Caribe, whose turquoise waters are home to turtles, dolphins, barracudas, nose sharks, and lobsters.

The Punta Sal National Park, which takes its name from the rocky point that juts out into the ocean, is also a great reserve to visit, although it is very difficult to reach and probably requires a guide. There are an abundant variety of wild life and plant species at this park as well as a lagoon and beach area called the Micos Lagoon where more than 350 different bird species dwell.

The Refugio de Vida Silvestre Punta Izopo is another notable wildlife refuge, although it is very difficult to navigate. The refuge is home to howler monkeys, iguanas, crocodiles, toucans, and parrots. The best way to see this refuge is to navigate the mangroves along the Rio Platano by kayak with the assistance of a hired guide.

While there are beach areas in the various parks and reserves, the best touristy beaches in Tela are in the nearby Garífuna villages of San Juan, La Ensenada, Triunfo de la Cruz, Tornabé, Miami, and Río Tinto.

Copán Ruins Archeological Site (Copán Ruinas Sitio Arqueológico) is the most studied Maya city in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site . Dating back nearly 2,000 years, the society that lived here was highly stratified, deeply symbolic, and focused on tradition.

You will find plenty to appreciate here. The site is famous for the stelae and altars that are scattered around the immense plaza, most of which were erected during the years 711 and 736. Other highlights include the ball court; the Hieroglyphic Stairway, a unique temple, which holds the longest known Mayan text; and the Acropolis featuring superb carved reliefs of the 16 kings of Copán.

About 1.6 kilometers from the central acropolis, Las Sepulturas archaeological site forms part of the "PAC" (Proyecto Arqueológico Copán) and provides valuable insight into how the Mayan elite lived during the days before the collapse of Copán. While you're exploring the site, keep an eye out for the spectacular scarlet macaws flying among the ruins.

After touring the ruins, don't miss the Museum of Mayan Sculpture , which displays impressive artifacts recovered from the site. Many visitors also like to stroll along the well-signed nature trails , where birds and butterflies dart among the thick foliage.

Not far from Copán, El Puente is a smaller Mayan archaeological site on the Chinamito River with several pyramids that have been partially restored.

About 32 kilometers from the west coast of Roatán , Utila is the most budget-friendly of the Bay Islands. Backpackers flock to this small, 13-kilometer-long-island, and many visitors come here on affordable dive vacations.

Presiding over an arching bay, Utila Town is the main settlement, where locals compete fiercely over domino games and tourist shops and dive centers dot the streets. Save time to enjoy some fresh seafood and traditional Honduras cuisine at one of the funky waterfront restaurants here.

The layered construction from the tunnels to the temples reveals incredible Mayan engineering. The first of the main temples is the Temple of Inscriptions. However, across the Great Plaza is another that overshadows it completely. This is the Hieroglyphic Stairway, the center of the ancient city and one that stands strong among the surrounding jungles.

2. West Bay Beach, Roatán

Located on Roatán, West Bay Beach can lay claim to being Honduras’ best stretch of ivory sand. Before you head offshore, you must take in the unspoiled beauty of this beautiful beach.

On the island’s western tip, it remains sheltered from the prevailing winds. This provides pristine sunbathing conditions, or sand castle building for the young-uns. The water also breaks calmly, allowing for relaxing swimming and great clarity for divers.

Diving outfitters dot the shorelines, providing easy access to the natural treasures of the shore. They’re joined by a slew of restaurants and beachfront bars from which you can recoup after a lengthy dive, or stick around for what promises to be a vibrant sunset.

1. Diving Around the Bay Islands

The best way to get to know Honduras is to explore off the mainland and head to the Bay Islands. Honduras boasts some of the world’s best dive and snorkeling sites, the highlight being the underwater world off the shores of Roatán.

It’s here you’ll discover the Roatán Marine Park. These designated protected waters feature spectacular coral and a breadth of tropical sea life. Whether you’re floating on the surface or diving deep, you have the chance to get up close with rays and turtles. There have also been sightings of whale sharks.

But you’ll find amazing diving on the other two Bay Islands destinations. At Utila and Guanaja, you’ll find a backpacker-friendly scene, where many go to achieve their PADI divemasters certificate.

I don’t think, that the maya ruins in Mexico are similar to the ones in Guatemala and Honduras. In Mexico the ruins look like “new”. In Comparison to that, if you stroll along the temples of tikal, you can get the feeling , that your are a discoverer on jungle-expedition 🙂

Copan is incredible. Enjoyed it more than Tikal. Fewer tourists and the detal on the carvings is absolutely amazing. Copan Valley is also filled with many hiking opportunities. It’s a five hour bus ride from Guatemala City.

The 3,000 years-old stone structures of Copán look very similar to the Mayan temples of Mexico – I would love to explore these sometime.

How to Plan the Perfect Trip Through Mainland Honduras

Honduras is a beautiful country filled with lush jungle, spotless beaches, delicious cuisine and an incredibly diverse ecosystem. On mainland Honduras you can enjoy chocolate made from fresh cacao and locally grown coffee, you can explore ancient Mayan ruins and embark on exciting adventures like hiking, white water rafting and zip lining. In the Bay Islands, you can scuba dive to your heart’s content, relax on beautiful beaches and enjoy some of the clearest snorkeling in the Caribbean.

Unfortunately, due to Honduras’ reputation as “the murder capital of the world” (it’s not by the way), Honduras is often overlooked by tourists in favor of its neighbors Guatemala and Costa Rica. Although the rest of Central America is definitely worth a visit, increased tourism to these areas makes for more crowded cities and more expensive trips. On the other hand, a visit to Honduras will allow you a true glimpse into the Honduran way of life, unmarred by excessive tourist activities and overcrowding. Parque Nacional Pico Bonito

Located on the outskirts of La Ceiba, Pico Bonito is the second largest national park in Honduras. Covering an area of 1073 square kilometers, it is one of the most biodiverse areas of the country and is definitely worth a visit on your trip to mainland Honduras.

How to Get to Pico Bonito

The easiest way to get to Pico Bonito is by flying into Golosón International Airport in La Ceiba. From there, you’ll need to take a 45 minute taxi ride into the national park.

If you are arriving from Roatán or Utila, take either the Galaxy Wave Ferry (from Roatán) or the Utila Dream Ferry (from Utila) to the ferry port in La Ceiba. If you’re flying into San Pedro Sula, you can take the Transportes Cristina bus to La Ceiba from the Metropolitan Grand Central bus station.

Omega Tours Eco Lodge

When it comes to accommodation in Pico Bonito, the Omega Tours Eco Lodge is the only clear choice. Owned and operated by a German couple that immigrated to mainland Honduras years ago, Omega Tours was started as a white water rafting and kayaking company.

Omega Tours quickly grew to include a luxurious and sustainable jungle lodge with an on-site restaurant and swimming pool. If you plan on booking your stay with Omega, I highly recommend the Beauty View Cabin. Two sides of the cabin are only screens, so you wake up and fall asleep surrounded by sounds of the jungle. On a clear day, you’ll have a beautiful view of the El Bejuco waterfall from the second floor bedroom.

The owners, Udo and Silvia, operate Omega Tours with sustainability as their number one priority. Below are a few examples of how they work to help the environment and preserve the natural beauty of Pico Bonito.

• All the wood used throughout the property is from fallen trees, trees that have been approved to cut or bought from a sustainable tree farm.
• They only use biodegradable cleaning products.
• They only buy food that’s in season and within the current environmental limits. There are also tons of tropical fruit trees on the property and many of those fruits, like rambutans, oranges and starfruit, are used by the on-site restaurant, La Jungla.
• They clean and reuse water bottles as well as reuse old materials around the lodge. As an example, old life jackets are made into chair padding.

Go White Water Rafting

Since Omega started as a white water rafting company, their rafting tours are not to be missed! For $60 per person, you can embark on a 3-4 hour rafting trip on the Rio Cangrejal (River of Crabs). Here, you’ll receive a short rafting lesson before heading out on the water. Surrounded by beautiful views of the jungle, you might even be lucky enough to see a Toucan or two pass overhead.

Go Horseback Riding

Although my severe horse allergy prevented me from experiencing this tour for myself, Omega offers a spectacular horseback riding trip through the Cangrejal River valley. On this 4-hour tour, you’ll ride through local villages, learn about nature from a knowledgeable guide, swim in spectacular natural pools and help a sustainable tourism project to progress. Enjoy Authentic German & Honduran Cuisine

Authentic German food is few and far between on mainland Honduras, so make sure to eat your fill at La Jungla ! Udo and Silvia are from Germany and they taught their kitchen staff to cook delicious German staples like roasted pork, spaetzle and bratwurst. My favorite meal on the menu is the “German Style Roast Pork” served with red cabbage and spaetzle (pictured below).

If you’re looking for a taste of mainland Honduras, don’t fret, there are plenty of traditional Honduran options on the menu as well. I always enjoy the anafre (traditional beans and cheese dip) as well as their fish and shrimp options with fried plantains. And, when you’re relaxing by the pool, don’t forget to try one of the homemade margaritas made with fresh fruit grown around the property!

Enjoy the Hiking Trails

There are plenty of easily walkable hiking trails around the property for you to explore at your leisure. Pico Bonito is a birdwatching paradise so don’t be surprised if a Toucan or Yellow Tail crosses your path. There’s no need to bring snacks, since you can grab fruit off passing trees to keep you energized during your hike!

If you want something a bit more challenging, you can sign up for the jungle hike to El Bejuco waterfall. The 4-5 hour hiking tour will start at Omega and lead you wading across the Rio Cangrejal. Tela is located on the coast of mainland Honduras and is a well-known tourist destination for visitors from the rest of the country. Although the town is beautiful and very affordable, they are not accustomed to many international tourists, so be prepared to attract some stares.

How to Get to Tela

It is fairly easy to get to Tela from both La Ceiba and San Pedro Sula. From both cities, you can book a bus ticket with Transportes Cristina. When you arrive to the Tela bus station, it’s easy to find a taxi to take you into the city center.

Where to Stay in Tela

Maya Vista is widely regarded as one of the nicest hotels in Tela. The hotel is located on the top of a hill and beautiful views of the coast are found from every room and the hotel’s restaurant!

Although the rooms are a bit pricier than other options in the area, the hotel is incredibly safe, the rooms are comfortable and clean and you can’t beat a day relaxing by one of the swimming pools. As a bonus, the Maya Vista rooftop is a great place to relax with a bottle of wine and enjoy a magnificent sunset over the coast.

Visit Tela’s Colorful Stairs

Who doesn’t like a good tourist photo opp? Tela’s colorful stairs are located only a short walk away from the Maya Vista hotel and are definitely worth a visit! There’s no better place to snap some Insta-worthy pics than a colorful staircase covered in marine life murals. Click here for directions.

Enjoy a Night Out on the Boulevard

The Boulevard is the lively site of Tela’s best nightlife! It consists of a long stretch of bars and restaurants packed to the brim with partygoers dancing, drinking and smoking hookah. The stretch is along the beach, so it’s a beautiful place to dance the night away with a tropical Caribbean view.

Go Scuba Diving

Roatán isn’t the only spot in Honduras with a sought after barrier reef! Tela Dive Center is the only PADI certified dive shop in Tela and they specialize in diving the Capiro Banks off of the Bay of Tela. The shop is located inside the Hotel Marsol , a mere two blocks from the beach. Stop by and schedule your dive or reach out on Whatsapp +504 2448-1782 to book!

Visit Tela’s Botanical Gardens

The Lancetilla Botanical Gardens are one of Tela’s most famous tourist attractions and are definitely worth a visit during your time on mainland Honduras. An adult entrance ticket will only set you back 50 Lempiras, or around $2. Founded in 1925 by the United Fruit Company, the gardens are home to 2,800 species of tropical plants.

Unfortunately, since we only budgeted for two days in Tela, we missed out on seeing the Lancetilla Gardens. They’ll definitely be on my itinerary next time I’m in the area!

Copan Ruinas

If ancient Mayan Ruins and colorful Macaw sanctuaries peak your interest, then Copan Ruinas is the place for you. Although I love living in the Bay Islands, there was something so charming about Copan. The cobblestoned streets felt almost European and the people were very friendly to tourists (even if not many of them spoke English).

How to Get to Copan Ruinas

If you don’t have a rental car, it can be a bit difficult to get to Copan Ruinas. But trust me, it’s definitely worth it! The cheapest way is by taking a bus from the San Pedro Sula bus terminal. If you arrive before 11:00AM most days of the week, you can book a ticket on the Hedman Alas (also known as the bougie bus). However, if those times don’t work for you, you’ll have to settle for a spot on the Casasola or “the Chicken Bus.” For more details on getting Copan Ruinas, head to this blog post .

Things to Do in Copan

When it comes to things to do, Copan Ruinas definitely doesn’t fall short. Picture locals in cowboy hats, rolling hills with gorgeous views, locally grown coffee on every corner and a flock of bright red macaws flying over ancient Mayan Ruins. Although there are countless things to do in this historic town, my favorites are pictured below.

First, the Mayan Ruins are an obvious must-see during your time in Copan. Make sure to book a tour to learn more about Mayan history! Second, make sure to visit the famous Copan Bird Park, Macaw Mountain . Here, fostered macaws are cared for until they are ready to reenter the wild. They also foster a wide variety of other species like toucans, owls and parrots. Last, but not least, Luna Jaguar Spa is a beautiful natural hot spring about an hour outside of Copan Ruinas. It’s the perfect place to spoil yourself and enjoy the natural beauty of Honduras .

Where to Eat in Copan

Along with fun activities, there is no shortage of tasty food in Copan! Our favorite restaurant (by a landslide) was Sol de Copan, the only authentic German brewery between Mexico and Colombia. Stop by for a home-brewed black IPA and some delicious schnitzel and spaetzle.

Besides the random, but delicious, German food, Copan Ruinas has tons of tasty restaurants that serve traditional Honduran cuisine. Along with yummy eats, the restaurants in Copan are filled to the brim with ambiance! For a list of my favorite places to eat in Copan, click here .

The largest lake in Honduras, Lago de Yojoa is widely known for its kayaking, birdwatching and magnificent hiking trails. The area is a nature-lovers paradise and it’s the perfect conclusion to your trip through mainland Honduras.

How to Get to Lake Yojoa

You can get to Lake Yojoa from both San Pedro Sula and Tegucigalpa. From both cities, you can purchase a ticket on El Mochito bus for 50 Lempiras or $2. The first bus leaves around 5:50AM and they run roughly every 30 minutes until the last bus at 5:30PM.

D&D Brewery Lodge & Restaurant

Thankfully, accommodation is an easy choice in Lake Yojoa! Located in the village of Los Naranjos, D&D Brewery is the perfect host for your time on Lake Yojoa. The property includes an open-air restaurant, on-site brewery, comfortable cabins and relaxing massages…all surrounded by a lush, jungle canopy. As a bonus, the lodge also offers hostel accommodation for those travelers looking to visit mainland Honduras on a budget.

Eat & Drink Your Fill at D&D’s On-Site Restaurant

D&D’s open-air restaurant is widely considered one of the best around Lake Yojoa. They serve tons of tasty Honduran and American cuisine alongside 4-6 tap beers brewed on-site. They usually offer a pale ale (my personal favorite), a porter and a couple fruit-infused options at a time.

Recently, D&D’s restaurant started serving wood fired pizza with tons of delicious toppings! The pizza is only offered on weekends, so make sure to grab a slice when you can.

Go Kayaking on Lake Yojoa

Kayaking on the lake was my favorite activity that I experienced during my time in Lake Yojoa. D&D made everything very easy by setting up my tour and even giving me a ride to the starting point!

Since I visited during low season, I was the only tourist kayaking that day. My kayaking guide also ran birdwatching tours, so I essentially got two tours for the price of one! The lake itself is absolutely stunning and kayaking or stand up paddle boarding around it is a wonderful way to spend a day on mainland Honduras.

Take a Bird Watching Tour

Mainland Honduras has amazing birdwatching around every corner, and Lake Yojoa is no different. Although birdwatching it not one of my personal passions, I loved learning a bit about it on my kayaking tour. If you love watching tropical birds in a beautiful, jungle setting, Lake Yojoa is the trip for you.

Explore the Finca Plantation

Right around the corner from D&D Brewery, hiking the trails of the Finca Plantation is a great way to enjoy the beauty and serenity of the region. This loop hiking trail goes through a functioning coffee plantation that doubles as a nature reserve. An entrance ticket will only cost you 80 Lempiras (a little over $3) and you can explore all day!

Visit the Pulhapanzak Waterfall

The Pulhapanzak Waterfall is one of the most famous tourist attractions in the area for good reason. These falls are located only 15 km from D&D Brewery and are not to be missed during your time on mainland Honduras. You can either make your own way there on El Mochito bus (approximately 30 Lempiras) or you can arrange a private transport through D&D for $30 (max. 4 people). You could try to take a Tuk Tuk to the falls for roughly 100 Lempiras, but most drivers won’t be willing to make a trip that far.

Pulhapanzak is the perfect place for thrill seekers! You can zip line above the falls or hire a guide to take you behind the raging waters.

The largest of the Honduran Bay Islands, Roatán is known to have some of the best scuba diving in the world and has a large community of expats. If you have extra time after visiting mainland Honduras, I definitely recommend taking the ferry over to Roatán to enjoy the island life!

How to Get to Roatán

The easiest way to travel to Roatán is by flying into Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport (RTB). You can usually find affordable direct flights from Houston and Miami as well as San Pedro Sula and La Ceiba airports on the mainland.

If you’re in La Ceiba, you can also take the Galaxy Wave Ferry over to Roatan. The ferry usually costs around $30 each way and takes around two hours.

Things to Do in Roatán

There are plenty of exciting things to experience in Roatan ! After spending time traveling on the mainland, Roatán is the perfect spot for a relaxing beach vacation. Spend the morning sipping Monkey La La’s (Roatán’s special blended drink) in the sand on West Bay beach and then head over to West End to scuba dive one of the most beautiful reefs in the Caribbean.

Where to Eat in Roatán

Roatán has no shortage of restaurants selling both traditional island cuisine and tasty international fare. Two of my favorites are pictured below: Loretta’s Island Cuisine in Half Moon Bay selling fresh seafood, fried plantains and yummy rice and beans and Sandy Buns Bakery serving some of the best brunch on the island.

Utila is the third largest of the Bay Islands and is an extremely popular destination among young backpackers due to its lively nightlife scene and lower prices. Although Utila is not far from Roatán, the islands are very different and I highly recommend visiting both if you have the time.

How to Get to Utila

Getting to Utila is fairly easy from both Roatán and La Ceiba. Simply book a ticket on the Utila Dream Ferry from either location. The journey takes 45 minutes from La Ceiba and one hour from Roatán.

Utila has a small airport but it tends to be expensive to fly into. Chances are you’ll have a layover in Roatán anyway, so I would suggest taking the ferry instead.

Things to Do in Utila

There are plenty of exciting things to do in Utila including scuba diving, beautiful beaches and experiencing Utila’s famous nightlife scene. For a complete list of my favorite Utila activities, head to my blog post here .

Where to Eat in Utila

Like Roatán, Utila has tons of tasty options to satisfy your island food cravings! Mango Tango (pictured below) is widely considered one of the best restaurants on Utila. It’s more expensive than most restaurants on the island but, since Utila is so cheap, it’s still very affordable. If they have Lionfish Ceviche, I would highly recommend ordering it! Paired with an ice-cold Salva Vida and an island sunset, it’s the perfect way to spend an evening in Utila.
