Do Oman Citizens Need A Visa For Dubai?

No , Oman citizens don't need a Tourist visa (Visit Visa) before traveling to Dubai. This means that you don't need to go through the hassle of a visa application process before traveling to Dubai. Oman citizens qualify for a Dubai Visa On Arrival (VOA) , which is a single-entry visa because they're part of the GCC countries. A valid Omani passport should be produced at the immigration desk while traveling to UAE.

The GCC residents who are not national citizens but work as high-level officials such as doctors, managers, engineers, public sector employees, and their families can have a 30-day non-renewable visa at all the airports in the UAE upon arrival.

The requirements for Omani citizens traveling to Dubai are relatively straightforward.

The requirements for Oman citizens who wish to travel to Dubai or the UAE are that they must have a valid Omani passport , and it would help if you also had a National ID .

What Are The Required Documents For Dubai For Oman Citizens?

Since Oman citizens can travel without needing a visa, the list of required documents is short. The documents you'll need are:

Your valid passport.

Return flight tickets.

Passport photo.

It would also help if you have your National ID with you.

What Are the Passport Requirements For Dubai?

You must make sure that your passport meets the requirements. If it doesn't meet the requirements, you won't be able to apply for your visa.

Be sure your passport is valid for six months after your intended date of travel; if not, you must renew your passport. You also need to make sure that your passport has two blank pages .

What Are The Passport Photo Requirements For Dubai?

Just like with your passport, your photo also needs to meet the Dubai Tourist Visa photo requirements. These requirements include:

The photo must be 4.5 cm in height and 3.5 cm in width.

The submitted photos must be in color.

The photo must have been taken no more than 6 months ago.

The photo must have a white background.

You shouldn't smile in the photo.

Your eyes must be clearly visible.

Blurred pictures will be rejected.-Glasses are acceptable only if they don't obscure the eyes and there is no glare in the photo

This is why I recommend you contact the airline you wish to travel with to ensure that you'll be able to board your flight to Dubai without applying for a Dubai Visa beforehand.

You need to do this before you book your date of travel, just in case the airline won’t allow you to board without a visa.

What Is A Dubai Tourist Visa?

A Dubai Tourist Visa is a visa that allows you to travel to and enter Dubai. You must apply for this visa before traveling. You can apply for a single-entry visa or a multiple-entry visa.

With a single entry visa, you can only enter Dubai once during the validity period. However, a multiple-entry visa allows you to enter Dubai multiple times during the visa validity period.

What Is The Validity Of The Dubai Tourist Visa?

Depending on your plan, tourist visas to Dubai can be issued for 30 or 90 days , single entry, or multiple entries.

Recently, the UAE facilitated a five-year visa that enables tourists to enter multiple times on self-sponsorship and remain in the country for 90 days on each visit, which can be extended for another 90 days.

How Much Is A Dubai Tourist Visa?

The cost of your Tourist Visa depends on the type of visa you apply for. I'll give you the visa fee for each Dubai Visit Visa. For example, the 30-Day Single-Entry Dubai Visit Visa costs OMR 26 (AED 250).

On the other hand, if you apply for the 90-Day Single-Entry Dubai Visit Visa, you'll need to pay a visa fee of OMR 63 (AED 600).

However, you should know that these fees can change depending on where you apply. For example, the hotel and visa agencies' prices may differ from those of Emarites.

How Long Does It Take To Process A Dubai Tourist Visa?

The processing time for the visa is about 3-5 business days .

However, the processing time might be longer depending on where you apply, if you apply during peak season, or if the place you apply has a high volume of applications.

Can I Extend My Tourist Visa?

All types of visit and tourist visas can be extended for 30 days twice upon application and after the relevant authority successfully approves. This can be done without the need to leave the country.

Visitors and tourists can apply for the second renewal before the expiry of the first one against OMR 63 (AED 600) for each time of renewal.

If you overstay before renewing, you'll have to pay OMR 10 (AED 100) fine for each day of your overstay, to be calculated 10 days after the visa expiry.

However, the new rule for an extension does not apply to the following categories:

Visitors and tourists who are residents of GCC countries

Residents accompanying GCC nationals

Those on special entry permits

Those on 96-hour permits for special missions.

What Are The Required Documents For A Dubai Tourist Visa?

Before you apply for your Tourist Visa, you need certain travel documents for your visa application process.

Each airline has some conditions which you must meet for them to arrange your visa. One of the conditions is flying with them. After booking your flight ticket, you can apply for a visa on their websites. Etihad Airways, Emirates Airlines, Fly Dubai, and Air Arabia provide visas.

How To Apply For A Dubai Tourist Visa Through Etihad Airways

The application process is very straightforward, and best of all, it‘s an online application. All you need to do is go to the Etihad Airways website and click on "Apply for UAE visa."

This will redirect you to another website where you must choose the visa type you want to apply for (Dubai Visit Visa).

Next, you must fill out the visa application form (provide all the necessary details) and attach the required documents like your passport, passport photo, and flight ticket.

Lastly, you must pay the application fees through the secure online portal and wait for your visa. The visa fees depend on the type of Dubai Visa you apply for.

How To Apply For A Dubai Tourist Visa Through Emirates Airlines

You can apply for your Dubai Tourist Visa through Emirates . Suppose you're traveling to or stopping over in Dubai with Emirates.

In that case, you can apply for and receive your UAE visa online without submitting your passport for stamping. Instead, you can apply for your UAE visa through Manage your booking after booking your Emirates flight.

The online visa application service is available for residents and nationals worldwide.

This service is only available to passengers with a confirmed Emirates booking where an Emirates ticket has already been issued, and the flight itinerary includes the desired time in Dubai.

The itinerary into and out of Dubai should be on one ticket (PNR), which must be an Emirates flight.

A minimum of four international working days before arrival in Dubai is required. However, Emirates recommends that you apply online as early as possible.

Your UAE visa application will take a minimum of 5 working days from the date of submission if you submit all the required documents.

How To Apply For A Dubai Tourist Visa Through Air Arabia

Just like with FlyDubai, you can't apply online through the website. Instead, you need to contact the Air Arabia sales center near you.

When you contact them, they'll tell you everything you need to know about applying for the Dubai Tourist Visa through Air Arabia.

How To Get A Dubai Tourist Visa Through Agencies And Hotels

The UAE's licensed travel agents and hotels can arrange a Dubai tourist visa for citizens of Lebanon.

To do so, you must first purchase the ticket and maintain a hotel reservation with the specific hotel. You can also contact travel agencies in Lebanon for any tourist packages available in the UAE.

This will ensure that your trip is paid for and everything is pre-arranged for you before your trip to Dubai. The tour agencies in Lebanon can also assist you or apply for a visa on your behalf.

UAE visa on arrival

Preapproved uae visas, prearranged uae visas, sponsoring someone to visit the uae, contact information, 30-day visit eligibility.

If you are a passport holder of the below country or territory, no advance visa arrangements are required to visit the UAE. Simply disembark your flight at Dubai International and proceed to immigration, where your passport will be stamped with a 30-day visit visa free of charge.

90-day visit eligibility

If you are a passport holder of one of the below countries or territories, your passport will be stamped with a multiple entry 90-day visit visa that's valid for 6 months from the date of issue, and for a stay of 90 days in total. Citizens of the below European countries are also entitled to apply for a pre-arranged visit visa if their 90-day visa on arrival has been fully utilized.

180-day visit eligibility

If you hold a Mexican passport you’re eligible for a multiple entry 180-day visit visa that's valid for 6 months from the date of issue, and for a stay of 180 days in total.

Dubai immigration procedures

As an added security measure, Immigration Authorities at Dubai International are now conducting random eye screening for visitors to Dubai.

Visitors asked to proceed for eye screening are required to present a hard copy of their visa or a printed version of the visa number confirmation page at the screening counter. If you do not have a copy with you, a charge of AED 30 per copy applies - payable only in AED.

Important information

Before you travel to the UAE, please check your visa requirements and make sure you have a valid visa if needed, or if your passport needs to be valid for a minimum period. Holders of non-standard passports and travel documents may also have different entry requirements: find out if you need to apply for a visa and other passport requirements.

As of 29 April 2016, GCC residence permit holders will need to apply for a UAE visa before arriving in Dubai.

New visit entry permit to the UAE for Indian nationals

From 7 January 2024, eligible Indian nationals with a normal passport valid for a minimum of six months can obtain a single entry, 14-day visa on arrival. A fee of USD 63 applies.

• Visa fees are non-refundable.
• The ticket is non-refundable if the visa has been issued and utilized.
• Visa processing time is approximately 3 to 4 working days.
• Entry into the UAE is subject to immigration approval.
• All visas are valid to enter Dubai for 60 days from the date of issue, except the 96-hour and 48-hour visas, which are valid for 30 days from the date of issue.

• 48-hour and 96-hour transit visas are valid for travel with Emirates tickets outbound from Dubai. You can only apply for a transit visa online or at the Emirates Commercial Visa APT office at Dubai International airport Terminal 3.

Nationals of countries requiring a prearranged UAE visa can now apply and pay for their visas online through emirates.com.

If you are travelling to or stopping over in Dubai with Emirates, you can submit an application and receive your UAE visa entirely online – without having to submit your passport for stamping. You can apply for your UAE visa through our Manage your booking after you book your Emirates flight. VFS processing fees apply. For more information please visit VFS Global.

The online visa application service is available for residents and nationals of many countries around the world. Find out if you can apply for a UAE visa. Applicants' passports must have at least six months' validity as of their date of travel to Dubai, and must be machine readable passports – handwritten passports are not accepted.

This service is only available to passengers with a confirmed Emirates booking where an Emirates ticket has already been issued and the flight itinerary already includes the desired time in Dubai. The itinerary into and out of Dubai should be on one ticket (PNR), and these flights must be Emirates flights. Note that any itineraries including any flights to or from Dubai on other carriers are not eligible for the online visa service.

A minimum of four international working days prior to arrival in Dubai is required, however Emirates does recommend that online applications are made as early as possible.

How to Get Dubai Visa from Oman

Visitors come to Dubai for different reasons. The financial city in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has its rules for the entry of foreigners. Some foreign nationals get visas on arrival, whereas others need to get a visa before entering Dubai. The visa-on-arrival feature is available only for select countries. So, individuals who belong to countries that do not have it must know how to apply for a Dubai Visa.

If you are from Oman, you might want to know how to apply for a Dubai Visa from Oman. Oman is a member of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), and according to its charter, which was published in 1981, nationals of its states do not need a visa to enter the UAE. Apart from Oman, there are five other states on the list. These include the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, and Bahrain.

While you may, as a citizen of Oman, enter Dubai without a visa, there are some facts that you must know before you do it. Knowing them will not only keep you well-informed but also help you avoid any legal hassle that may arise following your arrival in Dubai.

Requirements for the Nationals of Oman for a Visa-Free Entry into Dubai

As discussed earlier, nationals of Oman do not need to apply for a Dubai visa beforehand. However, you need to produce your document following your entry into the city. Officials who are entrusted with the responsibility of checking immigration documents may ask you to show your GCC country passport. Producing it is a must for the visa-free-entry option into Dubai as a resident of Oman. If you do not have it, you can also show your national ID.

Types of Dubai Visas for the Residents of Oman

Residents of Oman can choose an option out of the two available visa choices for a legal stay in Dubai. These include a 30-day and a 60-day visa . You can decide to choose one based on your purpose for visiting the city. To get these visas, you need to produce either your national ID or the GCC country passport.

After acquiring a Dubai visa with a validity of 30 days, you will get an extended window of 10 days to expand its validity for another 30 days. If you plan to stay for a longer duration in Dubai, you can request a 90-day visa following your arrival in the city.

When Do You Need to Apply for a Dubai Visa Online?

In the context of a Dubai Visa, the rules are different for nationals of Oman and those who reside there but are not its citizens. You may also want to know about the course of action in case you plan to visit Dubai with someone who is a GCC occupant. Individuals who belong to both these categories need to apply for a Dubai visa online.

The process to apply for a Dubai visa online is simple and easy. An applicant has to decide, first and foremost, what type of Dubai visa they are intending to apply for in order to enter the country. Depending on the length of your stay, the visa might be a 30-day single entry or 30-day multiple entry visa, or it might be a Dubai 90-Day multiple entry visa or single entry visa which from 2022 has been converted to 60 day visas . An applicant needs to provide the required documents and follow the stated guidelines for the visa application. The UAE’s Interior Ministry issues an e-visa application to its applicants. Its approval depends on the submission of documents plus the adherence to the stated guidelines.

When an applicant’s visa application is approved, they get an e-visa at their email address. It is the same email address that they provide while applying for a Dubai visa online.

Requirements for Dubai Visa Online

To obtain a Dubai Visa online, a GCC occupant or a non-inhabitant of GCC states needs to adhere to the following guidelines:

• They need to provide proof of residing in a GCC state for 90 days prior to the date of their appearance.
• Travel papers of their residence anywhere with a validity of 90 days before their appearance in Dubai.

For GCC occupants and non-inhabitants, getting a Dubai visa online before arrival is a must. It is an essential requirement for their legal entry as well as stay in Dubai.

Transit Visa

The transit visa for UAE is valid for 30 days. Its validity begins right from the date of its issue. Travellers who arrive in Dubai with this visa must meet two additional requirements. They must have a lodging reservation plus their flight booking for a destination outside of the UAE.

Working Visa

If you are a citizen of Oman and wish to come to Dubai for work purposes, you must apply for a work visa. A work visa is different from a transit visa. Its validity will depend on the contract of your workplace.

GCC citizens have additional document identification requirements. They need to produce their identity documents that are valid for six months at least. In addition, they also need to produce coloured photos.

Those who stay in UAE on a work visa can either request a change in the status of their visa by supplying the requisite documents. If they do not have the supporting documents, they need to leave Dubai before the expiry of their visa.

Visa authorities take immigration seriously in Dubai. Therefore, visitors must know the norms linked with a Dubai visa before they enter the city. Dubai Airport Immigration and border control officials are the ones who make the ultimate decision on whether or not to let a person into Dubai, whether they are Oman citizens or residents. You do not need to apply for a visa beforehand if you are a resident of Oman. However, if a non-GCC resident accompanies you on your visit to the city, they need to apply for a Dubai visa online with the above-mentioned documents and requirements.

Planning to go on a road trip to Oman? Here’s all you need to prepare ahead of time

Dubai: A relaxing road trip to Oman not only sounds like a good idea, but is also affordable compared to a flight to any other destination.

Luckily, for UAE expatriates and other nationalities residing in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, they are eligible for a visa on arrival, and going through the border checkpoint is quite an easy process – if you are aware of all the rules.

So, to make sure you do not face any hiccups on your road trip, here is all you need to know about the visa and car insurance requirements for driving to Oman.

Visa requirements for UAE residents travelling to Oman by road

“You do not need to apply for a visa in advance. UAE residents can get a visa on arrival stamped on their passport, and this allows for a stay of 14 days in Oman,” Latheef MC, visa consultant at Dubai-based travel agency, Anisha Travel and Tourism, said.

If you are planning to stay for longer than that, then you must apply for an eVisa in advance, which would allow you to stay in Oman for up to 30 days .

However, according to Oman’s eVisa platform it normally takes at least four to five working days for the visa to be approved. If you are going for a shorter break, you can apply for a 14-day visa on arrival at the UAE-Oman border.

Additionally, he stated that there are certain nationalities that are allowed to enter Oman visa free  through the border. However, it is important to check with the Oman Embassy or call the Royal Oman Police (ROP) contact centre – +968 2284820 to find if you are eligible for visa-free travel.

• Visa on arrival fee – 5 OMR (Dh47) . • Exit fee – Dh35 (this needs to be paid when you are exiting the UAE border). • Motor insurance (if your existing insurance does not cover driving in Oman) – Dh106 or higher, depending on the coverage.

Documents required

• Valid Emirates ID. • Passport with at least six months validity.

How to enter Oman from the UAE by road - five border crossings to know

1. Al Darah border post

Route Ell, through Ras Al Khaimah, connects UAE residents to the northern most region of Oman - the Khasab area of Musandam, which is a governerate of Oman. Musandam is an exclave of Oman, separated from the rest of Oman by areas of the UAE. It is popular among tourists because of its boat cruises that offer the chance to sight dolphins, snorkeling and off-roading in the Hajar mountain range.

2.UAE/Oman Dibba border post

Route E99, through Fujairah, connects UAE residents to the south of Musandam, to the areas of Dibba and Zaghi.

3.Khatmat Milaha border post

If you drive along Route E99 in the other direction through Fujairah, it will connect you to the northern part of Oman, opening up the cities of Sohar and Muscat.

4.Hatta Crossing/Al Wajajah border post

Along the borders of UAE and Oman, the next crossing is the Al Wajajah Crossing, which you can reach by driving down Route E44. This is another route you can take if you wish to access the capital Muscat or wish to explore the northern areas of the country.

5.Mezyad border post

Another border crossing through Al Ain is the Mezyad border post. When you are on route E40, take the exit for Zayed Bin Sultan Street, to reach the border crossing.

This border crossing connects you to the southern part of Oman, including Salalah, which is a popular destination during the summer months. This is because from June to September this area experiences monsoon, as Oman marks the Khareef/monsoon season.

What to do when you arrive at the Oman border

Step 1: pay exit fee.

When driving to Oman, you would first be crossing the UAE border post, where you would need to pay an exit fee of Dh35, according to Latheef.

Step 2: Get the visa stamped on your passport

“Next, when you are proceeding to the Oman border, you will need to park the car and enter the immigration section, where the visa will be issued and the passport will be stamped,” MC said.

Step 3: Apply for motor insurance for Oman, if you don’t already have one

Before you decide to travel, contact your insurance provider to find out if your policy includes Oman coverage.

“Major insurance companies in the UAE offer Oman coverage for free along with their comprehensive cover,” Hitesh Motwani, the Chief Marketing Officer at InsuranceMarket.ae, said.

In case your current motor insurance does not cover you for driving in Oman, you can purchase a policy at the border. Motor insurance for Oman is also referred ‘Orange Card’.

“The ‘Orange Card’ can also be purchased at the border, but this is limited to ‘third party cover’ only. In case of an accident, your car will not be covered,” he explained.

According to Latheef, when purchasing the insurance policy at the border, the minimum duration of the policy that you can purchase is for five days, which costs approximately Dh106.

“Most vehicles in the UAE have GCC insurance coverage. If not, you can go to one of the self-service kiosks and purchase car insurance with at least five days coverage. This costs around Dh106,” he added.

Step 4: Undergo car inspection

After the whole process is complete, the car will undergo a short inspection by the customs officers at the border, after which you will be able to enter Oman.

Getting A Dubai Visa

On arrival at Dubai (DXB) Airport or Dubai World Center (DWC Airport) when going through immigration request a visa to the Emirate of Dubai. This is an additional small white sticker with a barcode on it to the usual oval UAE entrance stamp. I’ve personally arrived at Dubai Airport countless times, sometimes they give the Dubai visa without asking, but not always- so definitely ask for it.

You can also get the Dubai visa if you’ll be entering the UAE at Port Rashid by ferry, but the same recommendations apply: request the Dubai visa.

Entering Oman On The Dubai Oman Common Visa

To enter Oman on the Dubai Oman Common Visa you’ll need to exit the UAE directly from the Emirate of Dubai into Oman. Making the only possibilities by direct flight from Dubai to Muscat (or Salalah), or over the land border crossing of Hatta/Wajajah.

Eligible Countries For The Dubai Oman Common Visa

Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Britain, Brunei, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxemburg, Malaysia, Monaco, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, USA, and Vatican City.

Other Notes On The Dubai Oman Common Visa

• When you hand over your passport at Oman immigration you need to state right away that you are entering Oman on the Dubai Oman Common Visa.
• Your Dubai visa will need to have 3 weeks of remaining validity in order to enter Oman on the Dubai Oman Common Visa.
• Dubai Oman Common Visas are good for 21 days.

Steps For The Oman E-Visa Application

What You Need To Apply:

• Scan of your passport
• A passport photo
• Credit/debit card for payment

Step 1: Go To The Royal Oman Police Website

Click here  to be brought to the official website for Oman visa applications.

Step 2: Click Apply For Tourist Visa & Login

Once you get to the Royal Oman Police website, click on the airplane icon that says ‘apply for tourist visa’. You’ll be brought to a login page next. Once here, click ‘register as a new user’ and follow the prompts. Once you’ve successfully created an account, log in.

Step 3: Apply For An Unsponsored Visa

Next, you’ll click the blue button on the left-hand side of the screen that says ‘apply for visa’, a dropdown will appear. Now, click the link to ‘apply for unsponsored visa’. On the next page, you will answer two questions: Your nationality in your passport and whether you are from a GCC country.

Step 4: Select Your Oman Visa Type

The next page will bring you to a list of different tourist visas to choose from, including 10 day single entry, 30 day single entry, various lengths of multi-entry visas. Select the visa that suits your needs.

Nicole, I must say that your blog is very helpful. I’ve been residing in Dubai for many years and visited Oman a few times, but I’ve never heard of the 21-day common visa. Definitely, I would explore it and use it.

I’m a little confused with your description of the Dubai Oman Common Visa. You indicate here that the visa is valid for 21 days which is = 3 weeks, and to enter Oman, the visa needs to have 3 weeks of validity remaining. This would only work if one goes to Oman on the same day they received their Dubai Oman Common Visa. Is that right? Is there a way to avail of this common visa for someone staying a few days to a week in Dubai before going to Oman?

It’s a little confusing, so that initial stamp and sticker you get to enter Dubai is good for 30 days in the UAE. In order to use that same stamp and sticker as part of the Dubai-Oman common visa scheme that sticker will still need 21 more days of validity, meaning you could in theory enter Dubai and stay in Dubai for 7 days and then go to the border and enter Oman because that 30 day entrance still has 21 days remaining on it. If you spent 2 days in Dubai and then went to the border you still would only be able to visit Oman for up to 21 days because once you use the common visa to enter Oman it is only good for 21 more days. I hope that helps clarify it a bit.

Hiya, nice post! There is a bit of info I found and wanted to clarify. I am flying to DXB, staying for a week and travelling to Muscat, Oman by car. I stay for 6 nights and return to Dubai and fly away. The wiki page says citizens of 103 countries incl. mine do not need a visa if teh stay is under 14 days. I am wondering if the Duba visa type will matter or I will be able to just enter Oman and exit without a visa as long as hotel, insurance etc are provided. Hey Elizabeth, good catch! I did have a buddy just in Oman in March and tried to get the common visa when he landed in Dubai for a few days before entering and they acted like it didn’t exist (at least in Dubai anyway). I did check the foreign ministry website and it sounds like you should be able to visit Oman visa-free if your passport is on the list. Double check the info here: https://fm.gov.om/visitors/entry-visas/

Thanks for demystifying the common visa. From what I understand I land in Dubai and ask for that additional sticker. Then I take a rental car and try to cross to Oman and tell the immigration officer that I’m entering on the common visa. And when he sees both the stamp and the sticker he will allow me to enter. Correct? Did you actually try that yourself? I’m asking because here https://adventuresoflilnicki.com/dubai-oman-common-visa/ there is a question that reads: **How can someone travel from Dubai to Oman?** and the answer mentions: If you don’t have a residency in GCC, then ***you’ll have to apply for the Dubai/Oman Joint Visa applied through one of the Oman’s embassy offices*** or via tourist travel agencies and can enter through the airport or through Hatta Border and Visa duration has to be valid for at least 21 days pre-entry to Oman. So it sounds like an additional trip to the Oman embassy in Dubai would be necessary… This is all sooo confusing.

Sorry that was confusing, I had included the steps for applying for the evisa for those that aren’t eligible for the common visa. So the first part is correct- ask for the sticker on arrival and then when crossing the border you will let them know it’s on the common visa. I have done this, though I was flying between Dubai and Muscat and not going overland. Because covid restrictions being in constant flux I would recommend contacting the Omani Royal Police directly to verify that everything is still on, their contact info is all here https://evisa.rop.gov.om/en/reach-us . The Oman visa run is an affordable and helpful procedure for travellers who are eligible for 30 days on-arrival visa to UAE. This 30 days visa is issued at border immigration and allows the holder to stay in the UAE for 30 days. The list of countries that get a 30-day visa on exit and return back to UAE are:

Free 90 Days On arrival Nationals

The 90-day-on-arrival visa is a multiple entry visa with a validity period of 6 months for the 90 days stay duration. Holders of this visa type can stay a few days in UAE, visit Oman for a few days or even choose to self-drive to Oman. The countries whose nationals are eligible for this type of visa are:

Paid 14 Days on arrival visa Nationals:

If you hold an Indian passport and also have a valid USA visit visa, a green card or an EU/UK residence visa you are eligible for the 14 days on-arrival visa. Holders of this visa type do not need to apply for an Oman visa in advance to complete the Oman visa run as they are eligible to visit any part of Oman and return back within the stay duration of their UAE visa.

Free 180 Days on arrival visa nationals:

The 180 days UAE on arrival visa is only stamped for Mexican passport holders while entering UAE through any airport, seaport or land border. They also don’t need any advance permission to complete an Oman Visa run as they are eligible to do an Oman visa run without a visa as long as they return to UAE within a day.

Prepaid UAE visa Nationals(Paid):

Travellers originating from countries like Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Philippines, Nepal, India, Jordan, Egypt, Bosnia and other countries that aren't eligible for an on-arrival UAE visa but would like to visit the UAE must apply for a prepaid visa before flying to the UAE. To get approval for a UAE visit visa, it needs to be sponsored by someone based in the UAE, be it a hotel, travel firm like Arabiers or an airline. These visa holders can visit Oman’s Dibba in Musandam without any Oman Visa but require an Oman Visa to visit other cities of Oman and travel between UAE and Oman. Prepaid nationals who are not eligible for a complimentary on-arrival UAE visa must apply for an Oman visa at least 5 days prior to your scheduled Oman visa run date. These steps will guide you through a straightforward Oman visa run procedure.

• 07   Download the e-tourist Oman visa copy that will be sent to your account on the official Oman visa website within 1 to 4 working days.

Travellers who are not eligible for a 30-day or 90-day free on-arrival visa when returning from Oman to the UAE must apply for a prearranged Dubai visa before returning back. Nationals originating from the countries mentioned below can apply for a Dubai express visa.

Home to stunning dive sites, intriguing archeological ruins, historic forts and souqs (markets) and some of the region’s best hiking trails, Oman promises an unforgettable travel experience. Visas to visit this complex, storied land are easy to obtain, but there's some red tape to navigate compared to its Gulf neighbors.

Many people visit Oman after spending a few days in Dubai in the neighboring United Arab Emirates, but you may feel a bit overwhelmed by the visa process for Oman. Whether you plan to relax on the beach, explore history Muscat, or go hiking in the Hajar Mountains, here’s a guide to the latest visa requirements for this fascinating desert sultanate.

Who needs a visa to visit Oman?

Citizens of 103 countries – including the US, Canada, the UK, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and most EU and EEA nations – can visit Oman without a visa, so long as the stay does not exceed 14 days. See the website of the Foreign Ministry of Oman for a full list of countries approved for visa-free travel.

Citizens of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, which includes Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, can travel to Oman completely visa-free. If you're unsure about the rules for your nationality, check the website of the Royal Oman Police – the body responsible for overseeing Oman's immigration system.

All visa-exempt visitors need to present evidence of confirmed hotel bookings for the entire duration of their stay, plus health insurance and a return travel ticket leaving Oman within the visa-free period. Your passport should also be valid for at least six months after the date you arrive in Oman.

Additional requirements for visa-free travel

Citizens of some countries on the approved list, such as Mexico, India and Jordan, can only visit Oman without a visa if they hold a valid Schengen Area visa or a valid visa for the US, Canada, Australia, UK or Japan (or are legally resident in one of these countries). Consult the Royal Oman Police website for more information.

How to stay in Oman longer than 14 days

Apart from visitors from GCC countries, all travelers require a tourist visa to enter Oman if they intend to stay in the country for more than 14 days. Applications for all types of tourist visas must be made online on the official Oman e-visa website before arriving in Oman. 

Visas for tourists who are GCC residents

Visitors who are resident in the GCC but hold different citizenship can apply for a Resident Tourist Visa so long as they are employed in a profession on Oman's approved list (or accompanied by someone in one of those professions). These visas cost OR5 (US$13) and allow stays in Oman of up to 28 days.

Applications must be made via the official Oman e-visa website, and your GCC residence visa must be valid for at least six months after entry into Oman.

Visa for tourists who are not GCC residents

Tourists who are not residents in a GCC country who want to visit Oman for more than 14 days will need to apply online for an Unsponsored Visit Visa. There are various types of Unsponsored Visit Visas, valid for tourism, business travel or transiting through the country, and each has its own rules and conditions.

It's best to check which class of visa you’re eligible to apply for and the visa conditions via the visa eligibility tool on the official Royal Oman Police website. 

Visas for 30-day stays in Oman

Citizens of 72 countries – including the US, Canada, UK, Australia, Japan, and many European countries – can apply for a 26B Tourist Visit Visa, a single-entry visa that allows you to stay in Oman for 30 days. This costs OR20 (US$52), and applications must be made on the official website where a full list of eligible nationalities is available.

The same nationalities can also apply for the 36B Tourist Visit Visa, a long-term, multiple-entry visa that is valid for one year and allows a maximum stay of 30 days in Oman for each visit. It costs OR50 (US$130).

Other classes of Tourist Visit Visas

Citizens from other countries who have a valid Schengen Area visa or a valid visa for the US, UK, Canada, Australia or Japan may be eligible to apply for a single-entry 26M Tourist Visit Visa for OR20 (US$52), or a one-year multiple-entry 36M Tourist Visit Visa for OR50 (US$130). The list of approved countries includes India, Mexico, Peru, Guatemala, Maldives, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.

How to visit Oman from Dubai

Travelers who fulfill the conditions for visa-exempt entry into Oman and have a valid tourist visa for Dubai can apply for a Type 21 Dubai/Oman Common Visa (also called the Dubai/Oman Joint Visa). This free single-entry visa allows a stay of up to 21 days in Oman and is not extendable. It is only valid if you enter Oman directly from Dubai (and not from any other emirate in the UAE).

You can apply for this visa through the Consulate General of the Sultanate of Oman in Dubai. To qualify for this class of visa, your Dubai tourist visa must have at least 21 days validity remaining on the date you enter Oman.

Other visa options for Oman

Five and 10-year multiple-entry visas are available for US diplomatic passport holders and US citizens who are visiting Oman to attend a training course or as a member of an international organization registered in Oman, such as the World Health Organization. To apply, you’ll need to submit additional documents detailing the purpose of your visit.

Applying for a visa for Oman

When applying for an Omani visa via the official e-visa portal , ensure your passport is valid for at least six months after the date you plan to enter Oman. You will need to submit a photograph, a copy of your passport, a hotel booking, and confirmed flight tickets confirming the dates of your entry and departure from Oman.

Visa processing times can vary depending on the type of visa – expect the process to take anything from 24 hours to a few days. To ensure that your visa is authorized before you check in for your flight, apply online at least four days in advance of your trip.

Even if you intend to drive to Oman from Dubai and enter through a land border, it's wise to apply online for the right type of visa before you travel. Hard copy application forms allowing you to apply for an Omani visa on arrival may be available at the border, but this system is being phased out, and wait times can be several hours.

Overstays and visa extensions for Oman

If you overstay your visa, a fine of OR10 (US$26) applies for every day beyond the term allowed on your visa, and you may have trouble entering Oman in future. Single-entry tourist visas can be extended for another 30 days, multiple-entry tourist visas cannot be extended – you can apply for a visa extension on the official e-visa portal.

How to Apply for Oman eVisa in Dubai

With the recent announcement of the Royal Oman Police on the  e-visa requirement  for tourists traveling to the sultanate, many of you might be wondering how this process goes and what you need to prepare for this purpose.

Step-by-step guide in applying for an omani tourist visa from dubai.

As such, GCC residents will be allowed access to Oman using a GCC Tourist Visa if they are the primary traveler with an approved profession, or Visa Type 29B if you’re the companion of the main traveler.

Meanwhile, for those coming from non-GCC countries, you will need to apply for the Dubai and Oman Joint Visa through one of Oman’s embassy offices or tourist travel agencies.

Applications can also be coursed through the  Royal Oman Police’s website .

To begin your e-visa application for an unsponsored tourist visa (29A), you need to perform the following easy steps:

1. Log on to the Royal Oman Police’s Website ( https://evisa.rop.gov.om ) by specifying your username and password on the right-hand side of the page.

2. Select the applicable link on the left-hand side of your dashboard. Then fill out all the required details.

3. Attach all required documents in the appropriate fields.

4. Pay the prescribed minimum fee of RO 5 through the available payment channels indicated on the website. 

5. Wait for the notification saying that your application has been submitted or approved via email and/or SMS.

6. Print and keep a copy of the transaction receipt, which you will use to track your visa application on the Royal Oman Police’s website.

Remember, there are several types of e-visas which you can apply for, but make sure to pick the one applicable to your case. Here is a link to the  four types of e-visas  you can apply for when visiting Oman.

According to the update, the process can take up to four days to complete but is free for visitors arriving from Dubai and Qatar. However, depending on the applicant’s country of origin, visa fees can cost between USD 13 (AED 50) and USD 130 (AED 500). Furthermore, passports should be valid for at least six months before entering the country.

Travelling between UAE and Oman is now much easier and faster, after the signing of the MoU for borderless travel.

Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority (RAKTDA) and the Oman Tourism Development Company (Omran Group) inked a deal to boost tourism between RAK and the Governorate of Musandam in Oman.

Bordering Ras al Khaimah, Musandam is a popular destination for UAE residents and tourists seeking water adventure sports.

“By signing this MoU, both entities aim to enhance cross-destination tourism through collaborative marketing efforts, improved transportation links, favourable visa arrangements for international tourists, and unique tourism packages. This initiative is underpinned by the geographical proximity of Ras Al Khaimah and Musandam, our shared Al Hajar Mountain range, and our deep-rooted cultural and historical ties, making this collaboration particularly meaningful,” said Raki Phillips, CEO of RAK Tourism Development Authority.

“We hope to create new opportunities for global travellers to experience both destinations more seamlessly,” he said.

The agreement was signed in November 2023 at the World Travel Market London.

“While UAE residents are required to apply for a visa online prior to their arrival in Oman, with the option of obtaining a visa upon arrival also available, a significant part of our collaboration is focused on easing border crossings. This initiative aims to simplify travel procedures, making it more accessible and less time-consuming for residents of both countries to travel between our regions,” Phillips told Khaleej Times in an interview.

In addition, one of the key goals of the agreement, he said, is to facilitate easier access for international tourists to explore both destinations “within a single journey”.

He said, “This is being supported by the development of favourable visa arrangements. Additionally, a unified GCC tourist visa was recently approved, which will further simplify travel across Gulf-member states once implemented, significantly benefiting tourists and boosting regional tourism, including in Ras Al Khaimah.”

‘Kids go free’ drive

Phillips also revealed that in line with the emirate’s goal to reinforce Ras Al Khaimah's reputation as a family-friendly destination, they will launch its summer campaign for 2024 at the ITB Berlin travel trade show in March, which includes a 'kids go free' offer.

Moreover, he added that the majority of hotels in Ras Al Khaimah offer a 'children go free' policy.

“Ras Al Khaimah is an ideal destination for families. Our extensive array of resorts offers family-friendly accommodations, including special rooms designed for families, a variety of children's amenities, engaging kids' clubs, numerous swimming pools, splash zones, and vast beachfronts. Beyond our family-friendly resorts, Ras Al Khaimah offers a wide range of activities suitable for families. From watersports to adventure-packed experiences in the desert and mountains,” he added.

Accelerating growth in 2024

In 2023, the Northern Emirate received a record 1.22 million overnight arrivals, up 8 per cent on 2022 numbers and bolstered by a significant 24 per cent year-on-year pick-up in international visitors.

“Looking ahead to 2024, our goal is not just to maintain this growth but to accelerate our efforts towards attracting over three million visitors by 2030, contributing to our long-term vision for tourism in the emirate,” Phillips said.

The 'nature emirate' is growing its hotel supply to match the increasing demand, and placing sustainability and accessibility at the heart of its growth strategy.

Planning a trip from Dubai to Oman by road ? Based on my many trips from UAE to Oman by road I put together this extensive guide that will help you prepare for a road trip from Dubai to Oman by car.

Whether you are renting a car in Dubai or driving your own vehicle , getting from Dubai to Muscat by road (or elsewhere in Oman ) is pretty straightforward.

Nonetheless, there is some important information that you need which I share in this post: UAE-Oman border crossings and procedures , required documents to drive through UAE Oman border by rental car and private car , including car insurance (orange card), driving times and distance from Dubai to Oman (and from other emirates in the UAE) and last but not least, how to get Oman visit visa both as a tourist in Dubai (UAE) and as a UAE resident .

Uae to oman by car: a quick checklist.

• A car- if you are looking to rent one, then I recommend checking Discovercars and Rentalcars car search aggregators for the best car rental rates in the UAE .
• Car registration card ( Mulkiya ), car insurance in Oman-orange card, driver’s license. 
• An International Driving Permit might be required when renting a car in UAE as a tourist.
• NOC certificate for a rental car or if you are driving a borrowed or leased car. 
• For vehicles registered in Dubai -Certificate to Use the Vehicle Outside the UAE for Tourism Purposes (UAE-expats only).
• Oman tourist visa (obtained online or at the border, subject to nationality).
• You need a passport to enter Oman from UAE by road.
• For UAE visitors going to Oman: your passport should be valid for at least 6 months after the visa issue date. 
• For UAE expats going from Dubai to Oman : UAE residency should be valid for at least 3 months and passport for at least 6 months after the visa issue date.
• Advisable  Travel Insurance .  I always take out one on my trips to Oman to have peace of mind.

Is a road trip from Dubai to Oman by car worth it?

Traveling to  Oman by road from  Dubai  (or Abu Dhabi, or any other Emirate)  is the best way to visit the Sultanate. Roads in UAE and Oman are in excellent condition and driving from Dubai to Muscat or elsewhere in Oman is a breeze.

Whether you are a UAE resident or visiting Dubai as a tourist, you can easily go on a road trip not only to  Muscat , but also visit nearby  Musandam , head on a long drive to Salalah , or just about anywhere else in  Oman  from any Emirate in the UAE either for a weekend or longer. 

Although the distance from Dubai to Muscat by road (the most popular Dubai-Oman route) is almost 500 kilometers and takes 5 hours to drive, do not get discouraged. The drive is long but pleasant: along the way, you will be blessed with the otherworldly landscapes of the Hajar mountains, the beautiful Gulf of Oman coastline, and rolling desert dunes. Moreover , petrol in UAE and Oman is cheap making it yet another great reason to go on a road trip to Oman from the UAE.

Yes, as a UAE resident, you can drive your own car from Dubai to Oman.

What documents do I need to drive my car from UAE to Oman?

To drive your car from UAE to Oman you need the following car documents:

• Driver’s license
• Car registration card ( mulkiya )
• Orange card – car insurance policy for driving in Oman
• For vehicles registered in Dubai -Certificate to Use the Vehicle Outside the UAE for Tourism Purposes.

How to get an orange card for Oman?

When driving your car from UAE to Oman, make sure to obtain a so-called  orange card  from your insurance company. This card serves as a car insurance policy that covers your car while driving in Oman. It is always required when traveling in the GAIF (General Arab Insurance Federation) countries (which includes Oman).

If you purchased a car insurance policy that already covers Oman territory (many bigger insurance providers include Oman), you will get an orange card free of charge. Otherwise, you can request your car insurance provider to include coverage for the Sultanate of Oman and issue an orange card for an additional fee.

Important! Make sure to contact your car insurance company and request to issue an orange car a few days before your trip.

Good to know: Whenever I request an orange card for my Dubai to Muscat trips, I usually receive it the next day via email from my insurance company. However, in some cases, you might have to collect it in person and it takes a couple of days for the insurance company to issue an orange card.  Therefore, the best is to call your insurance company and ask for all the details about the orange card processing times and costs (if any).

Getting Oman car insurance policy at the UAE-Oman border

If you are already heading from UAE to Oman by road and forgot to obtain the orange card, do not worry. You can get a car insurance policy covering driving in Oman at the border. According to the latest information I have, it costs 105 AED for 5 days which is the minimum number of days you can purchase insurance at the border.

IMPORTANT: Orange card purchased at the UAE-Oman border only covers damages caused by the Insured to a Third Party in a foreign GAIF member country (including Oman in this case). That means damages done to your car will not be covered.

Can I use a UAE license to drive in Oman?

If you are a UAE resident, you can use your UAE driving license to  drive in Oman .

Certificate to Use the Vehicle Outside the UAE for Tourism Purposes.

If you are driving a Dubai-registered vehicle from Dubai to Oman, according to RTA (Roads & Transport Authority), you should obtain a Certificate to Use the Vehicle Outside the UAE for Tourism Purposes.

Documents required for the certificate:

• Original Emirates ID.
• NOC from the Automobile & Touring Club of The UAE if you are a UAE-expat (this does not apply for GCC citizens).

The service costs 170 AED in total.

From my personal experience, I was never asked for such a document when driving from Dubai to Oman my Dubai-registered car. I found out about this requirement only recently but apparently, it was in place for years.

Moreover, I have been to Oman dozens of times. I went to Musandam , Muscat , and Salalah using different borders, and I was never asked for this certificate. People I know who also travelled to Oman from Dubai with their vehicles were never asked for one either.

I got to know about this particular certificate accidentally when I was looking for an NOC form for a borrowed car (more about it in the section below) on RTA website.

Nonetheless, if you are driving a Dubai-registered car, you can apply for this Tourism Purpose certificate through RTA, more application process here (as I understand you cannot do it online, you must go to one of the RTA centers).

Dubai to Oman by Road: can I drive a borrowed or leased car from UAE to Oman?

If you want to drive to Oman in a vehicle that is not in your name, below are the two most common scenarios and what to do to successfully cross the border.

Can I drive my friend’s, spouse’s, or company’s car from UAE to Oman?

Yes, you can drive someone else’s car as long as you have the No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the owner (written permission to drive their car across the UAE-Oman border) along with car registration documents, and, of course, insurance covering the territory of Oman (orange card).

I would also recommend obtaining a Certificate to Use the Vehicle Outside the UAE for Tourism Purposes discussed above if you are borrowing a Dubai-registred car.

NOC for the car to Oman format

If you are borrowing a car from a friend, spouse, or your work car, you can ask them to write down a free-style format NOC letter. It has to state the owner’s name, EID, residency visa number, and passport number and that they have no objection to you (make sure to include your name) taking/using the car from UAE to Oman. You should also attach a photocopy of the car owner’s ID along with the letter.

IMPORTANT: I received a letter from a reader who said they had problems at the Hatta-Al Wajajah border with taking a borrowed car because a free-form NOC issued by the car owner was not accepted. This is the first time someone complained about not being able to pass the border with a borrowed car because of an invalid NOC letter. I contacted RTA (The Road and Transform Authority in UAE) to check if they can provide a formal NOC form that the car owner has to fill in. The RTA representative confirmed that there is no need to come to their premises and that the owner can actually issue a free-form NOC letter. I suspect (this is only my assumption), that the problem was not an NOC of the vehicle owner. It could have been the Certificate to Use the Vehicle Outside the UAE for Tourism Purposes was also required for a borrowed vehicle that is Dubai-registered.

What if my car is still on the mortgage, can I drive it to Oman?

I drove my leased car from Dubai to Oman through the Hatta-Al Wajajah border without any issues. Nobody asked me any questions related to the lease. Neither did I contact the bank to ask if I needed any special permission to drive across the border between UAE and Oman.

In general, according to my research, people were allowed to cross the Hatta-Al Wajajah UAE-Oman border with their cars which are on a mortgage.

However, I would recommend contacting your bank and requesting a No Objection Certificate from them to have complete peace of mind.

Good to know: many people reported (and I second them from my experience) that the easiest UAE-Oman border to cross with borrowed car is Hatta-Al Wajajah. Folks at this border are laid back and they never even ask for the NOC even when you are driving somebody else’s car. Meanwhile, other Oman-UAE borders are stricter and they most likely request NOC.

Dubai to Oman by Road: Can I take a rental car from Dubai to Oman?

Yes, you can take a rental car from UAE to Oman. Nonetheless, before renting a car in Dubai (or elsewhere in UAE), make sure to check that the specific agency allows you to take the car across the UAE-Oman border. For example, with  Discovercars  or  Rentalcars , before making a reservation, you can always check if taking a car to Oman is permitted by the rental company.

On Discovercars website you can click on Rental Conditions->Cross Border policy to see if driving a car through the border is allowed.

UAE Car rental companies that allow taking rental cars to Oman

To help you save some time, I found out that the following car rental agencies permit border crossing from Dubai to Oman: Aurostrad, Dollar, Avis, SIXT. All can be booked through Discovercars and Rentalcars (it is cheaper to book through car search aggregators than directly through the company).

Dubai to oman by road: required documents to drive a rental car from uae to oman.

To drive a rental car from UAE to Oman you need the following car documents:

• Driver’s license (the driver must be the same person who rented the car)
• NOC certificate provided by the insurance company
• Car insurance policy for driving in Oman provided by car rental company

NOC: written permission to take UAE rental car to Oman

If you plan to go to Oman from UAE in a rental car, one of the most important documents you have to obtain is a No Objection Certificate (NOC) that you will request from your rental company.

Whether you booked a car through Discovercars or Rentalcars, or directly with a company, make sure to contact the agency directly at least 2-4 days ahead of your trip (depending on the company). The rental company will request your driver’s license and passport copy in order to process the required documents (NOC and also additional car insurance which I talk about in the next paragraph).

Good to know: UAE-based rental companies specify that not all their vehicles can be taken to Oman from UAE. Therefore, you might change your booked vehicle in case it does not fall under the permitted vehicles category.

Car insurance policy for Oman

To drive to Oman from the UAE you will also have to purchase an additional car insurance policy for Oman. This policy must be issued by your car hire in UAE company. Any other car insurance that you have purchased elsewhere will not be valid. Note, that you cannot obtain Oman car insurance at the border when you are driving a rental car.

The cost of a car insurance policy for Oman is combined with NOC issuance cost and varies across the companies.

As a reference, I found on the Avis website, that cost of the NOC certificate and additional insurance is combined:

• 1 to 3 days- 450 AED, and 100 AED for an additional day
• 7 days – 750 AED, and 100 AED for an additional day
• 1 month- 1500 AED, and 100 AED for an additional day

You will receive your NOC certificate and insurance upon collection of the rental car. Keep this with you to show at the border if requested.

Extra costs for taking your rental car from UAE to Oman

Also, note that all rentals in UAE and Oman have a mileage cap of around 200-250 km/day (calculated as a total for your rental period). Exceeding the allowance means you have to pay an extra of around 1 AED per kilometer. Oman is around 4 times bigger than the UAE, and it is very easy to finish the mileage allowance when driving from Dubai to Oman.

Is an international license valid in UAE and Oman? 

If you are a tourist visiting the UAE and are also planning to drive to Oman, you have to have a driving license issued in your country of residence, matching the residency stated on your passport.

Do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to drive in UAE and Oman as a tourist?

When driving in UAE and Oman as a tourist you may be required to have International Driving Permit (IDP). However, nationals of some countries are exempt from this requirement if their Passport and driving license is issued from the same country.

This applies to the following countries: Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Poland, Slovakia, Finland, Spain, Netherlands, Greece, Sweden, Belgium, Ireland, Turkey, Denmark, Portugal, Austria, France, United Kingdom, Norway, Romania, Luxembourg, Latvia, Serbia, Lithuania, United States of America, Canada, Japan, Australia, Singapore, People’s Republic of China, South Korea, New Zealand, Hong Kong and South Africa.

Nationals from all other countries and those whose passports and Driving licenses are not from the same country must hold an international driving license accompanied by their original driving license.

Driving from UAE & Dubai to Oman routes and UAE-Oman border crossings

UAE and Oman share several borders. The route you will take depends on where in Oman you are going to and which UAE emirate you are driving from/to.

Important:  there are specific borders that are open for everybody: tourists, GCC residents, and GCC citizens. While some of the UAE Oman borders are open to GCC citizens and Omani nationals only but not to UAE expats and tourists. 

Below is a list of the UAE-Oman border posts open for tourists, GCC residents, and GCC citizens:

• Hatta-Al Wajajah Border Crossing in Hatta;
• Mezyad-Hafeet border crossing in Al Ain;
• Khatam Al Shiklah in Al Ain;
• Al Dhara Border Post-Musandam (Westside coastal Khasab road);
• Dibba checkpoint – Musandam East coast (north of Fujeirah Emirate);
• Khatmat Malaha Border Post in Kalba (Eastern Sharjah, Gulf of Oman side).

Following is detailed information and recommendations on which UAE-Oman border to take based on your location in UAE and destination in Oman.

Hatta – Al Wajajah Border Crossing

Hatta Al-Wajajah border is one of the most popular crossings for travelers from Dubai to Muscat by road. It is also the closest to Dubai UAE-Oman border that is open to everyone including UAE expats and tourists. The time spent to cross this border is usually around 30 min to 1 hour depending on how busy it is. People tend to travel more during public holidays and weekends, thus allow extra time for crossing this popular UAE-Oman border.

Cross Hatta-Al Wajajah border if:

• You are driving from Dubai to  Muscat  or to the Eastern part of Oman. It is 140 KM from Dubai to the border and takes approximately 1 HR 40 MIN to drive from downtown Dubai to the Hatta Al Wajajah border. 
• Hatta-Al Wajajah is also the closest border to cross if you are driving from other emirates except for Abu Dhabi and Fujairah. That being said, when driving from Ras Al Khaimah, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain to the East of Oman Mainland, the closest border is Hatta-Al Wajajah.

You can also take this border if you want to drive from  Dubai to Salalah along the coast , but it will be a much longer route than through the border in Al Ain.

Important!   When driving from Dubai to Hatta Al Wajajah, take Sharjah-Kalba road E102 followed by the new Hatta road (there is no need to reach Shawka). DO NOT get confused if you are coming via E44 through Al Madam. This route will bring you to a border near Al Madam in Sharjah. Currently, it is closed (or only open for GCC citizens). 

Tip: once you are in Oman, and heading to Muscat from Hatta border, set your navigation to take you to the newly built highway which runs in the hinterlands of Oman. This is a much nicer and slightly faster route than the one that runs along the coast (you don’t actually see the coast).

Mezyad-Hafeet border crossing in Al Ain

Located in Al Ain, the Garden City of UAE, Mezyad-Hafeet border crossing is convenient if you are driving from the capital Abu Dhabi, or if you are headed to Nizwa, Jebel Shams, Jebel Akhdar, or Salalah.

Cross the Mezyad-Hafeet border if:

• You are driving from Abu Dhabi to Mainland Oman. It is 190km and around 2 hrs drive from Abu Dhabi to the Mezyad-Hafeet border crossing in Al Ain. 
• You are driving from Dubai to Nizwa, Jebel Shams, and  Salalah  in Southern Oman. The Meyzad-Hafeet border is 160km and 2 hours drive from Dubai Downtown. 
• You are driving from other Emirates (Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah, Ajman, and Umm Al Quwain) to Nizwa, Jebel Shams, and  Salalah  in Southern Oman.

Tip: if you are doing a road trip to Oman that starts in Muscat but finishes in Nizwa, you can use Mezyad-Hafeet border to come back to UAE.

Khatam Al Shiklah border in Al Ain

This is the other UAE-Oman border in Al Ain which is mainly used by trucks. However, regular cars can also use it as an alternative to Mezyad-Hafeet. It takes a similar amount of time to get to this border as to the Mezyad border. 

I have used this border before and it was very quiet with barely any cars.

Note:  the distance between Khatam Al Shiklah control posts on UAE and Oman sides is around 30km. Thus, don’t get confused, it’s a long drive in no man’s land. 

Al Dhara Border Post-Musandam (Westside coastal Khasab road)

Use this Al Dhara Border Crossing if you are driving to Khasab in the  Musandam Peninsula  on the west side.

Located at the Northern tip of Ras al Khaimah emirate, the Al Dhara border crossing connects UAE to Oman’s exclave Musandam Governorate, Westside. 

It takes 2 hours to reach the Musandam Al Dhara border from Dubai and 3.5 hours from Abu Dhabi.

Dibba checkpoint – Musandam East coast (north of Fujairah Emirate)

Use the Dibba checkpoint crossing if you are going to the East side of Musandam, Oman.

Dibba border is essentially a military checkpoint rather than an official border crossing. There is no official checkpoint on the Oman side, only on the UAE side. Also, there are two checkpoints next to each other- one for GCC citizens only, and the other for tourists and GCC residents.

If you are visiting the Musandam Peninsula from the Dibba side, you can use a tour operator or stay at Six Senses Ziggy Bay Resort, or Dibba Resort to be able to cross this checkpoint visa-free. Tour operators or hotels will arrange an entry permit for you if you have a booking with them.

However, if you are planning to go on hiking in Wadi Khub al Shamzi, or mountain biking in that area, you can still use an Oman visit visa to cross the Dibba checkpoint. 

Just before the lockdown back in 2020, we crossed the Dibba checkpoint with an Oman visit visa for GCC residents when we were going hiking on the East side of Musandam, Oman. We did not know about permits being arranged by tour operators. Also, the officers at the border did not question us. We explained that we are going for a hike and they let us through.

Khatmat Malaha Border Post in Kalba (Eastern Sharjah, Gulf of Oman side)

Use this border crossing:  if you are driving from Fujeirah or Kalba (a town that belongs to Sharjah Emirate on the East side of UAE).

Attention!  Information about this border crossing is not very clear. According to my research, it looks like it is open to GCC residents. However, some people reported that they could not cross the Khatmat Malaha border with a rental car even when they have NOC and insurance. You will be directed to the Hatta border.

In case you are traveling from Fujeirah to Oman as a tourist, you better head directly to Hatta- Al Wajajah border crossing.

FUN FACT:  Did you know you can visit Oman from UAE without a visa or permit? Even more, you can also visit UAE inside Oman. A small territory that is an exclave of the Musandam Governorate is called Madha. This tiny piece of land belongs to Oman and is an enclave of the UAE near Khor Fakkan town on the East Coast. What is even more fascinating is that you can cross the UAE-Oman border twice, and find Nahwa in the middle of Madha. Nahwa is an enclave territory that belongs to the UAE and is surrounded by Madha from all sides.  You do not need any permit or visa to enter Madha!

UAE-Oman border crossing procedures: waiting times, formalities, and exit fees

UAE-Oman border crossing procedures may appear somewhat confusing if you are travelling from Dubai to Oman by car for the first time. Hence, I share the step-by-step procedures and formalities that you have to go through at UAE Oman land borders. The bellow described procedure is exactly what you will have to do at the Hatta-Al Wajajah border. However, other UAE-Oman borders have similar steps.

UAE to Oman by car border crossing step-by-step

1. pay uae exit fee.

At the first drive-through counter on the UAE side of the UAE-Oman border, you will be asked to pay the exit fee of 35 AED plus 5% VAT per person. Collect the receipt and show it at the next window together with your passports where you will get an UAE exit stamp.

You can pay in cash or by card. Nonetheless, I always recommend having cash (UAE dirhams) just in case.

Note that when leaving UAE by land through any border to Oman you must always pay 35 AED exit fee per person, and only then you can get an exit stamp on your passport. 

2. Present your Oman visit visa (or obtain an Oman visa on arrival) and get entry to Oman stamp

After exiting UAE, you will have to proceed with a visa check and entry stamp to Oman. Also, your car registration documents, insurance, and NOC (if applicable) will be checked.

On the Hatta- Al Wajajah border, you have to drive for around 1 kilometer until you reach the Oman border post. Park your car and enter the building to get your Oman entry stamps there. If you already have Oman e-visas prearranged, it will save you time. Otherwise, you will have to fill in the immigration application form and make payments for the Oman visit visa on the spot.

IMPORTANT: Oman visa on arrival is subject to nationality. The good news is that an Oman visit visa might even be FREE if you meet certain criteria. Continue reading this post to find all the information about Oman visit visas for both UAE visitors and UAE residents.

Once your Oman visa is set and passports are stamped with Oman entry, you will be handed a small sheet of paper that indicates the number of passengers traveling to Oman. Keep it safe as you will have to show it when driving through the passport control gate and during a car inspection.

3. Pass Oman passport control

Once your Oman visa is sorted, proceed back to the car and drive to the passport checkpoint where you will be asked to show your passport with the Oman entry stamp.

4. Stop at the vehicle inspection point

After passing the passport control window, you will have to stop for a car inspection. The border control officer will inspect the interior and the boot of your car and if all is good, will stamp a small sheet of paper that you have earlier received at the Oman visa checkpoint. Keep it safe, as you will have to show it at the last checkpoint before entering Oman.

5. Pass the last checkpoint before entering Oman

After finishing your car inspection, you will drive a few hundred meters until you reach the last police checkpoint. Give the officer a small sheet of paper that was stamped at the car inspection place.

And that is it. Welcome to Oman!

How long does it take to cross the UAE-Oman border?

From my personal experience, with all the documents ready (printed e-visa, passports, and car documents in place), all the checking procedures, without queues (only a few vehicles at the border), it still takes almost an hour to pass Hatta-Al Wajajah border when driving from Dubai to Muscat. 

It is much faster (when there is no queue) at Al-Dhara (Khasab) border when travelling to Musandam, Oman. You can expect to spend around 30 minutes on Al-Dhara border.

Good to know : Public holidays and weekends are known to be notorious when it comes to queueing at UAE-Oman borders. Expect to spend at least a couple of hours at the border during peak times.

Driving back from Oman to the UAE

The procedure of returning to UAE from Oman by car is similar just in reverse. The only difference is that you do not have to pay any exit fees from Oman and the car inspection on the UAE border side is much stricter. I have driven from Muscat to Dubai with my car boot loaded with photography equipment and suitcases. The offers on the UAE side did a thorough check-up and asked many questions about what and why I was carrying.

Exiting Oman

On the way back to the UAE to Oman, you will be given a small piece of paper when crossing the Oman border (an exit stamp of some sort). Keep it safe as you will have to present it when driving through the next checkpoint on the UAE border side.

Arriving in the UAE

On the UAE side, you will again have to park your car and go to the immigration post (at the Hatta border it was a separate building for UAE residents and tourists, while GCC citizens could drive through the checkpoints.

In the arrival hall, you will have to show your passports. If you are a tourist returning back to the UAE, then your UAE visa will also be checked (refer to the Oman visa requirements section for more information).

Oman to Dubai vehicle inspection point

After UAE passport control, you will have to drive through an x-ray scan, and then stop at a dedicated checkpoint where the contents of your car will be inspected thoroughly.

Collect a stamped small piece of paper from the officer. You will have to hand it over at the last drive-through checkpoint window. And that is the last step.

UAE to Oman by road visa requirements

In this section, you will find all the necessary information about UAE to Oman by road visa requirements both for UAE visit visa holders and UAE residents.

Oman Visa for UAE residents traveling by road

Visa-free entry for uae residents visiting oman for less than 14 days.

According to the latest news , UAE expats and GCC residents are eligible for visa-free entry from UAE to Oman by road (and by air) if they are traveling to the Sultanate for less than 14 days. *

The other great news is that the former requirement for the UAE residency to be on a list of specific professions has been removed. UAE residents of all commercial professions are now eligible to enter Oman.

IMPORTANT: the UAE residency must be valid for at least 3 months prior to arrival to the Sultanate, while the passport must be valid for at least 6 months.

*I recently traveled from Dubai to Muscat by road via the Hatta-Al Wajajah border and encountered UAE residents who still had to pay 5 OMR (50 AED) for their visit visa. Those were Sri Lankan residents to be specific. Out of curiosity, I have asked officials at the border why not all UAE residents are getting visa-free entry. The officials explained that it depends on the nationality of each visitor. Also, not everyone is entitled to a visa on arrival. For example, Nigerians who are UAE residents are still required to fill in e-visa applications online, while Sri Lankans can get a visit visa at the border. I could not find a full list of specific requirements per country, but it is certain that EU, UK, US, Australia, Canada nationals who are residents in the UAE can travel visa-free to Oman.

Oman E-visa for UAE residents staying longer than 14 days

As a UAE resident, if you are traveling to Oman from UAE by road and planning to stay for longer than 14 days in the Sultanate, then you must apply for an Oman e-visa or get one at the border if your nationality is eligible. However, Oman authorities encourage us to obtain a visit Visa online to save time at the border.

You can apply for an Oman visa online on  Royal Oman Police’s official website here . Click on the “Apply for Tourist Visa” section and create an account.

Make sure to pick the correct visa type:

• As a GCC resident,  in most cases, you will need to fill in the form  29A GCC Resident Visa  valid for 30 days (unless you are looking to apply for a long-term multiple entry visa).
• 30-day Oman tourist visa for GCC residents costs 5 OMR (50 AED).

Dubai to Oman by road: entering Oman with the UAE visit visa (tourist)

As a tourist holding the UAE visit visa you either have to apply for an Oman e-visa or you can get it on arrival if your nationality is eligible. You may also be allowed to travel to Oman visa-free if your nationality falls under the Dubai-Oman Joint Visa countries ** list (see below for more info).

Oman e-visa for tourists in the UAE

• If you are traveling to Oman from Dubai by road holding a UAE tourist visa, and fall under G1** countries list , you can get a visa on arrival for 10 days which costs 10 OMR (100 AED) . If you intend to stay longer, then you should apply for a 26B visa online valid for 30 days which costs 20 OMR (200 AED) .
• Travelers who do not fall under the G1 countries list  must either be a spouse or a child of the G1 countries national to be able to apply online for an e-visa (choose 26F visa).
• If a traveler is not from the G1 countries list but they have a valid Schengen visa or a valid visa to one of the following countries (USA, UK, Canada, Australia or Japan) they can apply for 26M type of visa (if their country is in the list of allowed nationalities).
• 26F and 26B visas cost 20 OMR (200 AED) and allow 30 days stay in Oman.

In other cases, travellers might have to obtain an Oman visit visa via the Oman embassy in their country of residence. Alternatively can use visa application services on  ivisa .

IMPORTANT:  Passport holders who do not qualify for a UAE visa on arrival, must have a multiple-entry UAE tourist visa. Single-entry UAE tourist visa holders will not be allowed to enter Musandam. 

**G1 countries as per Royal Oman Police .  Europe:  Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Rep., Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Malta, Moldova, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Vatican, Ukraine.  South America:  Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Suriname, Uruguay, Venezuela.  Other Countries and Regions:  Australia, Brunei Dar al-Salam, Canada, French Guiana, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Lebanon, Macao, Special Administrative Region of China, Malaysia, New Zealand, Seychelles, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Thailand, Taiwan, United States, Islamic Republic of Iran, Russian Federation, People’s Republic of China, Republic of Kazakhstan

Passport validity

All passports must be valid for at least 6 months during your visit to Oman. 

Dubai/Oman Common visa for tourists in the UAE

21A Dubai/Oman Common visa  is a free Oman tourist visa on arrival available for UAE tourist visa holders who fall under a list of  Dubai-Oman Joint Visa countries** . The requirement for this visa is that your UAE tourist visa must be valid for at least 21 days before entering Oman. You must also enter Oman through the Hatta-Al Wajajah border.

However, I am not sure how many days you can stay in Oman with the Dubai-Oman Common visa. I would guess that up to 10.

**Dubai-Oman Joint Visa Countries:  Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Britain, Brunei, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Latvia, Japan, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Monaco, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, USA, and Vatican City.

IMPORTANT INFO! You may find information online that you may not need a visa to travel to Oman if you are a passport holder of one of the 103 countries and regions that are exempt from entry visas for stays shorter than 14 days. This information is provided by Foreign Ministry of Oman .

I have contacted the Royal Police of Oman to clarify additional information about the above and it turned out that in order to enter visa free for 14 days you must provide valid hotel reservation, valid health insurance, and a return flight ticket . Thus, this type of visa is only applicable if you are traveling to Oman by air as opposed to driving from UAE.

Good to know: If you still have pending questions regarding visa requirements or types, you can always reach out to Royal Oman Police by email at [email protected] . I have communicated with them on several occasions and they are quite responsive.

Oman e-visa processing times

Oman e-visa processing times on average are 24 hours, but can take up to 4 working days. From my experience of applying several times, you can get an Oman visa in a few minutes, hours, or days. Therefore, apply a week before your trip to be on the safe side. It never took me longer than 5 days to receive an Oman e-visa. 

What if I do not get my e-visa on time before my trip? 

For UAE residents, you could still get a visit visa on the Oman border if your passport is eligible for a visa on arrival. If you are on a tourist visa in the UAE, you can get a regular Oman tourist visa on arrival. You must check beforehand if your passport is eligible for a visa on arrival.

Oman travel regulations: vaccination, PCR test requirements, health insurance

UPDATE: All Covid-19 regulations for entering Oman have been lifted from May 2022. Please refer to Oman Air website to confirm. UAE has also lifted all COVID-19 related restrictions end of 2022.

While pandemic-related regulations have been lifted, it is still strongly advisable to have travel insurance . I always obtain one when traveling. FAQ about traveling from Dubai to Oman by road

Are there gas stations on the highway driving from dubai to muscat.

A word of warning about the gas stations after entering Oman by car from the Hatta-Al-Wajajah border. Make sure you fill-up the tank immediately at the first petrol station you see in Oman. If you miss that one, there will be another 2 or 3 petrol stations recently opened on the new highway from Dubai to Muscat. Yet don’t drive with an empty tank as the distances in between the petrol stations are over 100 kilometers. Also, bring some snacks and plenty of water. The last time I drove past the highway, petrol stations only had petrol but the food store was still under construction.

Can I buy an Oman SIM card at the border?

You cannot purchase Oman sim card at the border (it used to be available at Hatta-Al-Wajajah border before). That means, you may have to use roaming for navigation or pre-download Google Maps until you reach Muscat, or Nizwa (depends where you are heading to). Oman Sim cards are available at bigger malls and Muscat Airport.

Currently, there are 6 UAE-Oman border crossing open for expats, Hatta-Alwajajah, Mezyad-Hafeet , Al Dhara (Khasab), Dibba checkpoint, Khatam al Shiklah, and Khatmat-Milaha.

How much is Oman visa for UAE residents arriving by road?

UAE residents can enter Oman visa-free if they are traveling to Oman for less than 14 days. Otherwise, visit visa to Oman costs 5 OMR (50 AED) for UAE residents willing to stay up to 30 days in Oman.

Is Oman border open for UAE residents?

Yes, UAE-Oman borders are open for UAE residents except the Hatta-Al Madam which can only be used by GCC nationals.

Can I drive to Oman for visa change?

You can do a visa run through Oman by road. Hatta-Al-Wajajah border is the one people usually use for visa runs.

Do I need a 4WD to go to Oman? 

You will need a 4 WD in Oman if you are planning to drive steep narrow roads into the mountains or remote villages, unpaved roads, or deserts. However, roads in Oman are in excellent shape and you can still reach many highlights with a regular car. 

Also, note that many rental companies will not allow you to take a 4WD for off-roading (do it at your own risk basically). This kind of defeats the purpose if you are getting 4×4 for off-roading.

However, you would still benefit from 4WD if you only plan to use the paved road to reach Jebel Akhdar or some small mountain villages located deep in the mountains. It is compulsory to drive 4WD if you want to explore this Jebel Akhdar mountain peak. There are checkpoints, and for your own safety, it is not allowed to drive 2WD to Jebel Akhdar.

Can I travel from Dubai to Oman by bus?

There is a bus from Dubai to Muscat operated by ‘ Al Khanjry Transport ‘. The one-way ticket costs 100 AED and the journey takes around 7-8 hours including border crossing.

Is there a train from Dubai to Oman?

Currently, there is no rain from Dubai to Oman. However, Etihad Rail has signed an agreement with Arsenale, and is building a luxury rail service running from Abu Dhabi through Liwa desert to the Omani border. Interestingly, there will be 15 luxury coaches that are currently being produced in Puglia and Sicily, Italy.

Hi Danielle, you don’t need any permit or visa to enter Madha. There is no border or post control. The only difference you may notice will be Oman plate number and the signal of your mobile network may disappear or switch to roaming.

Hi, Curious Traveller, regarding visa run, it depends which passport you hold, if that is the procedure you can do. But those people who are allowed to do visa runs, don’t need to stay in Oman, they just cross the border and come back immediately. PCR should be valid, at least it was last month for 14 days.. Try contacting some of those companies who help with visa runs, they should know all the latest info.

Hi Shoaib, I am glad you find this information helpful. Regarding NOC format, I honestly don’t know, try calling the insurance company and ask for advice, or maybe RTA. I am guessing it is just a written printed and signed form stating all the details of the owner and the person borrowing the car, car details, and saying that the owner does not object to their car being driven by that person, contact details of both parties as well. Regarding travel insurance, that is information officially stated across many sources, such as airlines and news sites. I was not asked at the border for health insurance, but this is one of the requirements (not sure why for a month though, maybe because of the visit visa length). The cheapest option so far is with Safety Wing- there is a link to it in this post if you scroll up. The price will be defined according to your age (you will be able to see it once you fill out the details), it is around 40 USD for a month.

Hi Geraldine, depending on your residency visa, and/or passport (not sure if you are a tourist to both countries or a resident of one of them), you will need visit visas for UAE and Oman (maybe you passport allows visa on arrival which makes things simple). If you don’t have multiple entry visas, you will have to get UAE visa to enter UAE first, and then Oman visa again to enter Musandam. On the way back from Musandam, you again have to get UAE visa, and the same applies to Oman visa if you are traveling back to Muscat. You must check entry rules according to your passport. Oman visa can be easily obtained online in advance. UAE, I am not sure as I am a resident of UAE. Regarding PCR, UAE requires it to be not more than 48 hours old, while Oman – not more 72 hours old. You would have to check if you can use the same PCR test that you have done in Oman to go to UAE and then to Musandam (I would believe you should be able to). However, I don’t know if you can do PCR at the border. I would better do it in Muscat if I was you. Note that you may have to do another PCR in Musandam (Khasab most likely) to go back to UAE. And hopefully, you can use the same result to go back to Muscat if it is within 72 hours. Let me know how it goes once you have done your trip.

Hi Shabeena, yes Hatta border which is called Al Wajajah, is open for everyone and there are no separate entrances- the same way and entrance for both citizens and residents. Google shares this number for Oman side Hatta border: +968 26 849920 I never called borders before so not sure how it works, but you are welcome to try.

Hi Ali, answering yur questions below: 1. Exit fee is per person 2. According to official requirements, yes 3. I believe so, insurance company will provide it free of charge (it was our case- we had cover,they just issued the paper) 4. Kindly ask the bank, but when I traveled with my leased car years ago, I didn’t have NOC from the bank and it was fine. 5. I do not know the exact age, but I have heard small kids are. 6. Registering on the travel site is freem just have all you pcr test results and vaccine papers ready to be uploaded (I believe you refer the Oman website for travel registration)

Hello. I am traveling from London to Dubai then by car to zighy bay. Have the pcr rules changed now to 48 hours rather than 14 days? I’m worried about testing positive whilst at zighy bay when taking the pcr in order to travel back to Dubai. I expect there will be lots of kids at hotel who haven’t been vaccinated or tested as under 12. Do you know what would happen to me and my family if I did test positive?

Hi Rachel, I haven’t heard or seen articles about changes so far. The best would be to ask the hotel in Zighy Bay, they must be aware of the most recent rules. In the unlucky scenario, if the test comes out positive, you would have to quarantine in Oman most likely.

Hi Ahmed, I am not fully aware on visa run process as I have never done it before. However, I have heard that certain nationalities just have to cross Oman border and drive in back again. They don’t even need to stay in Oman. It is done as quickly as half a day almost. Also, there used to be companies you take people by bus for visa run purposes for some fee, not sure if they still around though.

You can use the same test to come back to Dubai, it will be valid for 14 days (somebody went to Oman and back using the same test just a week ago, so the same procedure is still in place). 2. Hi Essie, someone I know crossed Hatta border a couple of weeks ago, and 14 days PCR was valid. However, the Mezyad border is part of Abu Dhabi emirate, and they have different rules when it comes to PCR validity. Therefore it’s worth checking the latest rules for entering Abu Dhabi.

Can i cross mazyad border by walking.. i have all the documents.. because my family will wait me in the oman side.. is it possible to go by walking

Hi Shabeer, I believe you should be able to walk through the border, but I do not know 100%. The best is to call the border and ask if this is allowed. Also, check the distance between UAE and Oman border posts. The Mezyad border seems to be less than 2 km between the checkpoints, but others, like Hatta Al Wajajah or Khatam Al Shiklah are far away from each other (not a walking distance).

I am Indian citizen working in UAE with UAE residence. I am planning to travel through Khatmat Al Shikla border to Oman and same day planning to visit back to UAE (Fujairah) through Khatmat Malahah border. Is this possible?

Hi Mohammed, yes, you can enter Oman through one border and leave through the other border. Both are open as far as I know.

Hi Abraham, you can travel to Oman during Ramadan as well, the only thing that may not be as pleasant is the hot weather. Regarding unvaccinated travelers, I am not sure what would be the procedure- I could not find any precise online information about this matter. But I believe with a negative PCR test you can enter. As far as I have heard, quarantine was also removed. The best would be to call Oman Airlines, or Oman immigration and check with them as they would have the exact latest updates.

Hi Usama, if you are travelling from Hatta border to Muscat, take the old road that is closer to the coats- there are plenty of restaurants along the way. Ehile the newer and a bit faster road going to Muscat doesn’t even have petrol stations (at least we haven’t seen any for many kilometer after crossing the border).

For an unsponsored tourist visa to Oman that allows the holder to stay for 30 days, the approximate fee is AED 50. The visa remains valid till a month after the application has been approved.

The visas are valid for 30 days with an option for an extension of another 30 days. Citizens of the Gulf Corporation Countries (GCC) are exempt from obtaining an Oman visa.  These countries are the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Kuwait. Moreover, the nationals of New Zealand can apply for a visa (free of charge) which allows for a three-month stay in the country.

People can also apply for e-visa to enter the country to save visa processing time at the border. The e-visa takes 4 days to process.

People who hold an official and diplomatic passport from Russia and South Korea are also exempt from applying for an Oman visa.

Oman Visa Types

Single-entry Oman e-visa: It allows you a single- entry and you can stay in Oman for up to 30 days, starting from the date of arrival in Oman. It must be used within 6 months after its approval or it becomes invalid.

Multiple-entry Oman e-visa: It allows multiple entries with a maximum of 30 days stay for each entry. It is valid for one year. However, it has to be first used within 6 months after its approval.

GCC e-visa: It needs to be applied by residents of GCC (foreign nationals with GCC resident permit). You can stay for up to 28 days.

Conditional visa: This applies to certain countries. The citizens of these countries need to possess a valid residence permit or visa issued by the Schengen area, UK, USA, Canada, Australia, or Japan.

Atypically heavy rains in the United Arab Emirates on Monday and Tuesday caused flooding, flight cancellations and school closures. Vehicles were abandoned on highways like this one in Dubai.

DUBAI — Schools and businesses have been closed across the United Arab Emirates after the country experienced about year's worth of rain in one day.

The flooding also disrupted travel at Dubai International Airport, which is the world's busiest for international travel.

Climate talks end on a first-ever call for the world to move away from fossil fuels

Videos posted online showed residents sweeping rainwater out of their homes and luxury cars stranded in Dubai's flooded streets, after a storm unleashed the heaviest rainfall ever recorded in the country since the start of data collection 75 years ago. That was well before the country was founded.

Dubai's high-end stores weren't spared either, as rainwater gushed through the ceilings of shopping malls. At Dubai's main airport, the runway flooded and flagship carrier Emirates suspended all departing flights on Wednesday. The local Gulf News reported more than 1,200 flights were canceled due to Tuesday's storms. The airport is expected to return to fully operational by Friday.

The city, known for its year-round sunny weather and beaches, saw sunshine later in the week, but schools remained remote due to road closures.

Despite some damage to cars, homes and roads, the UAE's state news agency says the rainfall boosts the country's groundwater reserves.

Heavy rains kill 18 in Oman as flash floods lash UAE

Rescue teams search for two missing people in Oman as bad weather disrupts travel in the United Arab Emirates.

Heavy rains and flash floods have swept parts of the Gulf region, killing at least 18 people in Oman and causing travel disruption in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

In Oman, the death toll announced on Tuesday included at least nine schoolchildren and their driver whose vehicle was washed away by the floodwaters in Samad A’Shan on Sunday.

The National Committee for Emergency Management said rescue teams were still searching for two missing people.

The government gave administrative staff in public and private sectors the day off due to the bad weather conditions in several provinces, while remote work was recommended in other parts of the sultanate. Residents were also urged to evacuate to shelters if they felt they were in danger or asked by authorities to do so.

Police and soldiers were deployed to the hardest-hit province of Ash Sharqiyah North to transport citizens out of flooded areas, according to state media.

Flooding in UAE

Meanwhile, heavy rainfall also lashed the neighbouring UAE on Tuesday, flooding portions of major highways and leaving vehicles abandoned on roadways across Dubai.

The rains began overnight, leaving massive ponds on streets as whipping winds disrupted flights at Dubai international airport.

Schools across the country largely shut before the storm and government employees were working remotely if able. Many workers stayed home as well, though some ventured out, with the unfortunate stalling out their vehicles in deeper-than-expected water covering some roads.

Authorities sent tanker trucks into the streets and highways to pump away the water.

Initial estimates suggested more than 30mm (1.2 inches) of rain fell over the morning in Dubai, with as much as 128mm (5 inches) of rain expected throughout the day.

Rain also fell in Bahrain, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

Storm pounds desert nation of United Arab Emirates, floods Dubai airport

T he desert nation of the United Arab Emirates attempted to dry out Wednesday from the heaviest rain ever recorded there after a deluge flooded Dubai International Airport, disrupting flights through the world's busiest airfield for international travel.

The state-run WAM news agency called the rain Tuesday “a historic weather event” that surpassed “anything documented since the start of data collection in 1949.” That's before the discovery of crude oil in this energy-rich nation, which was then part of a British protectorate known as the Trucial States.

Rain also fell in Bahrain, Oman, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. However, the rains were acute across the UAE.

The flooding sparked speculation that cloud seeding — flying small planes through clouds dispersing chemicals aimed at getting rain to fall — may have caused the deluge. But experts said the storm systems that produced the rain were forecast well in advance and that cloud seeding would not have caused such flooding.

Several reports quoted meteorologists at the National Center for Meteorology as saying they flew six or seven cloud-seeding flights before the rains. Flight-tracking data analyzed by the Associated Press showed one aircraft affiliated with the UAE’s cloud-seeding efforts flew around the country Monday.

The National, an English-language, state-linked newspaper in Abu Dhabi, quoted an anonymous official at the center on Wednesday as saying no cloud seeding took place on Tuesday, without acknowledging any earlier flights.

The center did not respond to questions Wednesday from the AP.

The UAE, which heavily relies on energy-hungry desalination plants to provide water, conducts cloud seeding in part to increase its dwindling, limited groundwater .

Jeff Masters, a meteorologist for Yale Climate Connections, said the flooding in Dubai was caused by an unusually strong low-pressure system that drove many rounds of heavy thunderstorms.

“You don’t need cloud seeding’s influence to account for the record deluge in Dubai,” Masters said.

Scientists also say climate change in general is responsible for more intense and more frequent extreme storms, droughts, floods and wildfires around the world. Dubai hosted the United Nations' COP28 climate talks just last year. Rising temperatures and other effects of global warming long have been viewed as a threat to life in the already-baking region.

The rains began late Monday, soaking the sands and roadways of Dubai with some 0.79 inches of rain, according to meteorological data collected at Dubai International Airport. The storms intensified around 9 a.m. Tuesday and continued throughout the day, dumping more rain and hail onto the overwhelmed city.

By the end of Tuesday, more than 5.59 inches of rainfall had soaked Dubai over 24 hours. An average year sees 3.73 inches of rain at Dubai International Airport, a hub for the long-haul carrier Emirates.

At the airport, standing water lapped on taxiways as aircraft landed. Arrivals were halted Tuesday night, and passengers struggled to reach terminals through the floodwaters covering surrounding roads.

One couple, who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity to speak freely in a country with strict laws that criminalize critical speech, called the situation at the airport “absolute carnage.”

“You cannot get a taxi. There's people sleeping in the Metro station. There's people sleeping in the airport,” the man said Wednesday.

They ended up getting a taxi to drop them off near their home some 18 miles away, but floodwaters on the road slowed them down. A bystander helped them over a highway barrier with their carry-on luggage, the bottles of gin they picked up from duty-free shopping clinking away.

Dubai International Airport acknowledged Wednesday morning that the flooding had left “limited transportation options” and affected flights as aircraft crews couldn't reach the airfield.

“Recovery will take some time,” the airport said on the social media platform X.

Emirates said the airline had halted check-in for passengers departing from Dubai from 8 a.m. until midnight Wednesday as it tried to clear the airport of transit passengers — many of whom had been sleeping where they could in its cavernous terminals.

Passengers on FlyDubai, Emirates' low-cost sister airline, also faced disruptions.

Paul Griffiths, the airport's chief executive, acknowledged continued issues with flooding Wednesday morning, saying every place an aircraft could be safely parked was taken. Some aircraft had been diverted to Al Maktoum International Airport at Dubai World Central, the city-state's second airfield.

“It remains an incredibly challenging time. In living memory, I don’t think anyone has ever seen conditions like it,” Griffiths told the state-owned talk radio station Dubai Eye. “We are in uncharted territory, but I can assure everyone we are working as hard as we possibly can to make sure our customers and staff are looked after.”

Egypt’s national carrier, EgyptAir, also temporarily suspended flights between Cairo and Dubai due to the bad weather.

Schools across the UAE, a federation of seven sheikhdoms, largely shut ahead of the storm and government employees were largely working remotely. Many other workers stayed home as well, though some ventured out, with the unfortunate stalling out their vehicles in deeper-than-expected water covering spots on some roads. That included parts of the Sheikh Zayed Road, a 12-lane highway through downtown Dubai.

Authorities sent tanker trucks out into the streets and highways to pump away the water. Water poured into some homes, forcing people to bail out their houses.

The country's hereditary rulers offered no overall damage or injury information for the nation, as some people slept in their flooded vehicles Tuesday night. In Ras al-Khaimah, the country's northernmost emirate, police said one 70-year-old man died when his vehicle was swept away by floodwaters.

Khatm al-Shakla, an area near Al Ain in Abu Dhabi, saw 10 inches of rain Tuesday, the most anywhere in the country, officials said.

Authorities canceled school and the government instituted remote work again for Wednesday. Dubai later closed schools for the rest of the week.

Rain is unusual in the UAE, an arid, Arabian Peninsula nation, but occurs periodically during the cooler winter months. Many roads and other areas lack drainage given the lack of regular rainfall, causing flooding.

Meanwhile, in neighboring Oman, a sultanate that rests on the eastern edge of the Arabian Peninsula, at least 19 people were killed in heavy rains in recent days, according to a statement Wednesday from the country's National Committee for Emergency Management. That includes some 10 schoolchildren swept away in a vehicle with an adult, prompting condolences into the country from rulers across the region.

Parts of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) saw a year and half worth of rainfall in one day and at least 20 people have died after wild weather swept across the region on Tuesday.

A particularly hard hit Dubai saw giant highways clogged by flooding and its major airport in chaos as the Middle East financial centre remained gridlocked on Wednesday, a day after the heaviest rains on record.

Shocking footage has since emerged showing the devastation caused by the intense weather with cars trapped in flooded car parks, structures torn down and shopping centres almost “under water”.

TikTok has been inundated with footage of popular tourist attractions such as the Mall of the Emirates and the Dubai Mall. The vision shows shops flooded, ceilings caving in and staff sweeping out water from high-end stores like Chanel and Fendi.

In one clip a security guard can be seen trying to whisk shoppers out of the mall as the entire floor is covered in water.

Stationary store Flying Tiger Copenhagen can be seen in the background with its ceiling completely ruined and water gushing out.

Another clip shows products in the Samsung store at Mall of the Emirates completely ruined as water pours out from a caved-in roof with staff frantically trying to cover items.

At least 20 deaths

Oman, which neighbours the UAE, has recorded 19 deaths including a girl whose body was found in the city of Saham on the country’s Gulf coast.

In the UAE itself, a man in his 70s died when his vehicle was swept away in flash floods in the Ras al Khaimah emirate, north of Dubai.

Local news outlet The National said he was attempting to travel through a flooded waterway as heavy rain hit.

Worst rain for 75 years

The UAE’s National Centre for Meteorology (NCM) said 255mm of rain came down in 24 hours near Al Ain, on the Oman border.

With the UAE averaging between 140mm and 200mm of rain each year, that amount far exceeds the annual usual total.

Oman said it had received its worst rain for 75 years.

Conditions have eased on Wednesday, local time. The UAE has announced the “end of the weather fluctuations” but that it would take time for the country to return to normal.

Airport remains in chaos

Dubai International Airport, the home of Emirates and the world’s second busiest airport, is under particular pressure.

Other flights have seen severe delays with passengers unable to get to the airport or to leave it.

“We advise you NOT to come to the airport, unless absolutely necessary,” said the airport on social media.

“Flights continue to be delayed and diverted. We are working hard to recover operations as quickly as possible in very challenging conditions.”

Footage circulating on social media showed the airport completely flooded at times on Tuesday.

Clips show the tarmac drowning in water as planes try to navigate their way through what now looks like a marina.

Emirates suspended all check in for passengers until Wednesday morning to battle the backlog.

“We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused. Emirates is working hard to restore our scheduled operations, and our teams will provide all possible support to affected customers,” it said in a statement.

At 10am AEST it informed passengers it has resumed arriving flights of airlines operating out of Terminal 1.

“Flights continue to be delayed and disrupted, so we urge you to only come to Terminal 1 if you have a confirmed booking. Please contact your airline for the latest information on your flight status.

One video shared to Instagram by digital creator Jay Robert showed an Emirates flight attendant dragging her luggage through knee-high waters as the footage cuts to inside what appears to be the airport – also flooded.

“Proof nothing will stand between crew and sleep, Emirates crew wade flood waters in Dubai in efforts to get home after long flights,” the caption read.

“Several Emirates crew wrote in to say this is the worst flooding they’ve seen in the city in nearly 20 years.”

Similar scenes were repeated across Dubai and elsewhere in the UAE as the oil-rich Gulf state, better known for its arid climate and intense summer heat, reeled from the storm.

Both the Oman and the UAE, which hosted last year’s COP28 UN climate talks, have previously warned that global warming is likely to lead to more flooding.

“It is highly likely that the deadly and destructive rain in Oman and Dubai was made heavier by human-caused climate change,” Otto, of the Grantham Institute for Climate Change at Imperial College London, said. Meanwhile, Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates both suffered flooding and water was ankle-deep in at least one Dubai Metro station, according to images posted on social media.

The Dubai Metro is now back operating a limited service.
