Welcome to Occoneeche Hunting Lodge

2014 Was A Great Year At Occoneechee Lodge!!!!

Welcome to Occoneechee lodge. We’re the oldest lodge in the area; offering guided hunts since 1989. We are unique in several ways and offer the most liberal bag limit, managed and unmanaged areas, and three full days or six full days of hunting.

Occoneechee Lodge is located in the heart of the peanut belt of Northeastern North Carolina. Our hunting area consists of 8,000 acres of family-owned land in Northampton County on the historical Roanoke River. Northampton has been the state leader in deer kills reported for the last several years. Directly across the river is Halifax County, the #2 deer kill county in the state.

We have an expert guide staff, who are all avid hunters. Our experienced and friendly guides will do their best to make your hunting experience as successful and enjoyable. We do not guarantee any kills because, under some conditions, the deer do not move as well. However, over the past several years, our hunters have enjoyed an over 100% success ratio.

Lily Pond Creek Hunting Lodge

Lily Pond Creek Hunting Lodge

Whitetail deer, trophy black bear, eastern turkey & striped bass fishing.

30,000 acres of owned and leased land within the fertile Roanoke River agricultural region. This is hunting at its best, Southern Style.

Located in Northampton County, North Carolina

Lily Pond Creek Hunting Lodge is located in Northampton County, North Carolina. Northampton County is one of the top deer and turkey-producing counties in NC and is tops for the number of bucks per square mile.

Lily Pond Creek Hunting Lodge has been in operation since 1994. Since that date, we have hosted countless hunters, many of which still hunt with us today. When you first walk through the lodge doors you are a client, but by the time you leave, you are our friends. We pride ourselves on the fact that our hunters feel at home here, and they say we are like family.

The properties here at Lily Pond and Verona are managed exclusively to provide the best opportunity for you to harvest trophy animals. The terrain is a mixture of agricultural fields producing soybeans, peanuts, cotton, and corn with many acres of mixed hardwoods, planted pine, and swamp lands, a perfect blend of food and covers to grow an incredible amount of animals. It’s not unusual to see as many as 20 deer and turkeys in one field as you wait for that trophy buck to step into view.

We offer a variety of hunt packages for whitetail deer and the majority of our lands are non-restrictive zones. This means those hunters that don’t want to count points or antler width can simply relax and hunt. However, if a trophy is what you're after then our Verona Plantation QDMA farm is for you. Turkey hunting at Lily Pond Creek is as good as it gets anywhere in the country. We have turkeys and lots of them. Our success ratio for our turkey hunts approaches 100% each spring. Mix that in with an afternoon float down the Roanoke River for as many striped bass as you catch and you just had an incredible day afield. We have 3 lodges to stay at and each offers a unique hunt package. Our lodge at the original family plantation is a central gathering place for all hunters to relax and swap stories about the day's hunt.

Whether you are a beginner to the sport or a seasoned pro or just want to start a new activity with your kids and have been looking for a place, well you found us. Come join us and start your own tradition at Lily Pond Creek Hunting Lodge.

Hunting & Fishing

Northampton County is always at the top of the list when it comes to great Whitetail deer hunting in North Carolina. Northampton boasts the most bucks and total deer per square mile as well as the top producer of the number of bucks taken and the number of deer harvested per square mile in the entire state. The terrain that we hunt ranges from crop fields of peanuts, soybeans, clover, and milo to hardwood ridges, pine thickets, swamp bottoms, and cutover. We lease thousands of acres of privately owned farms every year and are constantly scouting these to do everything we can to make your outdoor experience the most enjoyable that we can offer.

NC Deer Hunting

Boasting one of the highest deer per acre densities in the state of North Carolina, this area provides outstanding whitetail deer hunting opportunities. Dare To Hyde manages and hunts over 30,000 acres of prime deer habitat. With such vast expanses of property, we’re able to offer some of the finest deer hunting in North Carolina.

From bow and muzzleloader to rifle and shotgun, we have a trip that can accommodate your deer hunting style. We have many different stand and blind locations, and take great care in not overhunting an area. Many locations overlook natural or planted food plots that are located throughout the property.

Eastern NC is not known for its trophy caliber deer, but instead the vast number. If you are looking for a trophy hunt opportunity, we honestly recommend traveling to a trophy whitetail destination such as Illinois, Texas, or Kansas. If, however, you’re looking for the chance to see large numbers of deer during your hunt and have a guaranteed opportunity of taking a deer each day you’re here, a Dare To Hyde deer hunt is for you. These hunts are great for filling the freezer or exposing a youth hunter to an exciting hunt.

All of our deer hunts are offered as guaranteed opportunity hunts. This means that we guarantee you the opportunity at a deer every single day you hunt with us. It is your choice whether to take a doe or buck. There are no trophy fees or small antler penalties when you hunt with Dare To Hyde.

ASHEVILLE — The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission is proposing changes to wildlife management, inland fisheries and game lands ― including the hunting of bears and deer ― that would take effect for the 2024-2025 season. The proposed regulations are open for public comment through Jan. 30.

The commission is suggesting a total of 36 changes to regulations . Some of the most notable include adjustments to the bear and deer season, as well as a reclassification of what it means to be hunting under the influence.

Changes to bear season

Since the 1970s, over 500,000 acres of land have been designated as bear sanctuaries by the wildlife commission, according to its website.

Today bears are thriving, with the bear population in the mountains growing by 7% each year, according to District 9 Commissioner Brad Stanback with the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission, which encompasses a large part of Western North Carolina.

“The bear population in the N.C. mountains has fully recovered from the dismal state it was in when the Bear Sanctuaries were originally established,” Stanback told the Citizen Times by email, noting the terminology change made last year from “Bear Sanctuaries” to “Designated Bear Management Areas.”

But bear populations are doing so well that it’s causing some problems, Stanback said. He listed roadkill as a major source of bear mortality, which he called “not only a significant waste but also a problem for human safety and property damage.

“We would prefer that more bears get killed by licensed hunters rather than by motor vehicles,” Stanback said.

More gun-related accidental deaths: More NC hunters killed in gun-related accidents this season than past 3 years

To allow for a higher legal take of bears, the wildlife commission wants to extend bear hunting season in October by nine days. Bear season, which is traditionally divided into two segments separated by deer season, would have Sunday openers for each segment.

During the second segment of mountain bear season, hunters would be allowed to use unprocessed bait, unlike before. The wildlife commission says this reduces the complexity of regulations “without any biological impacts.”

Starting hunting season earlier, according to the wildlife commission, would stabilize and “slow down bear population growth, and help meet the population objective, while providing additional bear hunting opportunities.”

Changes to deer season

The wildlife commission is also proposing changes to when deer season in the mountain region begins, which is traditionally the Monday before Thanksgiving.

According to Stanback, it’s ideal to have deer gun season coincide with the biological peak of the rut, which varies across the state, but tends to happen a little later than the traditional opening day in the North Carolina mountains.

To align hunting start dates more closely with peak breeding, the commission is suggesting gun season begin the Saturday after Thanksgiving and run through Jan. 1. Black powder season would begin two Saturdays before Thanksgiving and run until gun season.

Chronic wasting disease: Chronic wasting disease detected in NC deer: what hunters need to know

The shift will reduce the vulnerability of yearling bucks, reduce the harvest of bucks before breeding and provide more hunting opportunities during the rut, according to the commission.

“This change was designed to be a compromise between the ideal biological opening while still providing the hunting opportunities that people have come to expect,” Stanback said. “They can hunt deer with black powder firearms the weekends before Thanksgiving as well as have a traditional opening day firearm hunt on Thanksgiving weekend.”

The wildlife commission is also suggesting antlerless gun season increase from one day to one week on private lands and antlerless black powder season increase from one week to two weeks in Buncombe and Henderson counties.

Hunting under the influence

The wildlife commission is looking to impose a language change regarding hunting under the influence. Instead of “under the influence of alcohol or any narcotic drug,” the rule would now read “under the influence of an impairing substance.”

Stanback compared this change to that of the shift from driving under the influence to driving while impaired in motor vehicle laws.

“We periodically review our rules to make sure they are consistent with current statutes,” Stanback said. “If our Wildlife Enforcement Officers feel they need to issue a citation, we need to be sure that their actions won’t be challenged on a technicality like being slightly different from the language in the law.”

The proposed regulation change states that Wildlife Law Enforcement Officers routinely encounter people hunting on game lands while under the influence of an impairing substance other than those categorized as alcohol or narcotic drugs, such as marijuana.

Because these substances are not defined as narcotic drugs or alcohol, officers are currently unable to charge these people for hunting under the influence, according to the wildlife commission. Changing the language to “impairing substance” will allow officers to enforce this rule more effectively.

10 Best Mountain Towns to Visit in North Carolina, According to Local Experts

From Highlands to Boone, these are the best mountain towns in North Carolina.

deer hunting trips in north carolina

It only takes one trip to Western North Carolina to grasp the magnitude of its appeal. Home to several subranges of the Appalachian Mountains, most notably the Smokies, this region of the Tar Heel State brims with natural beauty all year round. A combination of spectacular peaks, bubbling creeks, vividly colored wildflowers, and acres of towering pine, oak, poplar, and maple trees, the mountainous landscape has an almost spiritual quality, one that people have been drawn to for thousands of years. This powerful allure eventually led to the creation of various mountain towns — from Highlands in the south up to Brevard, Waynesville, and Banner Elk.

“North Carolina’s westernmost mountain towns are where mountains and Main Streets meet,” Steven Reinhold, the adventure team leader at Cataloochee Ranch , tells Travel + Leisure . “[They] embody an environment where folks can escape their day, even for just a moment, to watch the trees sway in the breeze all within view of the Great Smokies .” For Paige Tillung, hotel manager at Half-Mile Farm , there’s also “the beauty of four very distinct seasons,” as well as the convenience of location. Most of the state’s mountain towns are within driving distance of a major airport — either Asheville Regional Airport, Charlotte Douglas International Airport, or Piedmont Triad International Airport outside Greensboro.

If the only thing stopping you from planning a trip is deciding where to go, this expert-curated list should help. Read on to discover the best mountain towns in North Carolina.

“Brevard is located in the heart of the ‘land of waterfalls’ and [it’s] mountain biking’s East Coast mecca,” says Reinhold. “Trailheads are interwoven around town, giving visitors quick access to the Pisgah National Forest, Dupont State Forest, and Gorges State Park.” While your trip should have plenty of outdoor adventure, make sure to leave time to explore Brevard’s art scene. If you’re in town in the summer, try to time your visit with an open-air show at Whittington-Pfohl Auditorium at Brevard Music Center ; otherwise, a stroll through the downtown art galleries and artisan boutiques is a must in any season.

Named T+L’s Best Small Mountain Town in 2023 , Highlands has all of the necessary characteristics and features for a picture-perfect getaway. It has “the charm of a small mountain town with all the luxury needed for a great vacation,” says Tillung; plus, she adds, there are “some of the best trails in the world,” and “the food and culture are the best you can find in the South.” Start your trip by checking into any one of the top-rated hotels in town: Old Edwards Inn & Spa , Half-Mile Farm, Highlander Mountain House , Skyline Lodge , or the recently opened Outpost Inn . Then, spend a couple of hours along Main Street, making sure to stop in Mountain Fresh Grocery for a quick breakfast or lunch. Other can’t-miss points of interest include the area’s many waterfalls and The Bascom , which hosts art exhibitions, lectures, and various classes and workshops.

Just 10 minutes down the road from Highlands sits Cashiers, a mountain town best known for stunning scenery; golfing, fly fishing, hiking, and antique shopping opportunities; and High Hampton , a much-loved luxury resort that underwent a modern redesign in 2021. Those staying at the resort may be tempted to stay on property the entire time — the Adirondack chairs and lawn beds are rather comfortable — but they’d be remiss to not explore other aspects of the tiny town. Family-owned and operated Cashiers Farmers Market , for instance, is an excellent choice for a barbecue lunch, and you’re bound to purchase something special at Vivianne Metzger Antiques , The Village Hound , or Zoller Hardware Gift & Gadget Mercantile .

Waynesville

According to Reinhold, Waynesville is the “crown jewel of mountain towns,” thanks, in part, to the destination’s prime location by Great Smoky Mountains National Park . To get your heart racing, he recommends “an unforgettable adventure” (think forest bathing or overnight backpacking) with The Appalachian Adventure Company . If you prefer to stay closer to town, browse the art galleries and antique stores along Main Street, and follow that up with a beer at Boojum Brewing Company or a coffee from Smoky Mountain Coffee Roasters . Come nightfall, there’s nowhere more luxurious to get some shuteye than The Swag , one of the best all-inclusive resorts in the South .

There’s a lot more to Boone than Appalachian State University, although cheering on the Mountaineers at Kidd Brewer Stadium is certainly a must-do activity in this college town. Families with younger travelers will embark on hours of entertainment at the famous Tweetsie Railroad , with its themed train rides and live shows, and Daniel Boone Park , where the Hickory Ridge History Museum showcases what mountain life was like in the late 1700s and early 1800s. In the summer months, cool off by floating down the New River with Wahoo’s Adventures , or find a swimming hole along Crab Orchard Falls Trail. For accommodations in Boone, you have a few choices — ranging from hotels to vacation rentals — but you can’t go wrong with Rhode’s Motor Lodge , a boutique property that opened in the fall of 2023.

Like many North Carolina mountain towns, Sylva (population: 2,623) is known for its breweries, art galleries, culinary hotspots, and proximity to hiking trails. “My favorite hike in the area is Pinnacle Park , which is home to North Carolina’s only certified forest therapy trail,” says Reinhold. Here, you’ll grab a brochure at the trailhead, then enjoy a relaxing, self-guided walk in nature. With a newfound appreciation of your surroundings, make your way to Main Street, which he says “has a seemingly infinite selection of dining options, notably Ilda , Meatballs Pizzeria , and recent James Beard [nominee] Dalaya Thai .”

Hot Springs

George Rose/Getty Images

“I believe Hot Springs might just be the hippest town in Appalachia,” says Reinhold. “The Appalachian Trail passes right through the town — utilizing one of the sidewalks on Main Street — and its throngs of thru-hikers have left their mark on this tiny town.” To prepare for hiking, mountain biking, rafting, or llama trekking in the area, or to pick up any gear you may have forgotten, pop into Bluff Mountain Outfitters . After a long day outside, refuel with pizza at Vinyl Pies , baked goods from Artisun , or a taco and beer from Grey Eagle Taqueria and Big Pillow Brewery . As the name suggests, Hot Springs is also known for its geothermal waters; visitors can head to either Broadwing Farm or Hot Springs Resort & Spa for a rejuvenating soak during their travels.

Bryson City

The title of “Outdoor Adventure Capital of the Great Smoky Mountains” goes to Bryson City, North Carolina. While small — only about 1,500 residents call it home — this is a town that goes above and beyond when it comes to mountain charm. To start planning your trip to Bryson City, book a room at the Fryemont Inn or The Everett Hotel , then begin to plot out your ideal itinerary. If you’re visiting in the summer, you’ll want to hike in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, take a ride on the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad, and then spend a day on the water, whether you’re white-water rafting on the Nantahala River or taking a paddleboard out on Fontana Lake.

When visiting Banner Elk, Tillung says you’ll find “small mountain town life [paired] with big luxury dreams and ideas,” as well as a “growing food scene, great golf courses,” and several places to “reconnect with nature.” In the winter, Banner Elk is particularly popular, as it’s located between two large ski resorts: Beech Mountain and Sugar Mountain. Year round, travelers can ride the Wilderness Run Alpine Coaster , cozy up at The Lodge at River Run , or walk along the town’s Greenway Trail System. Dining options include Artisanal , Stonewalls Restaurant , and the Banner Elk Cafe & Lodge — although be sure to check each restaurant’s website for seasonal closures.

Little Switzerland

There are few North Carolina mountain towns as unique as Little Switzerland, a seasonally open, Swiss-inspired destination on the Blue Ridge Parkway . You’ll need to plan your trip in the warmer months, anytime from mid-April through early October, to get the full Little Switzerland experience, which includes a stay at the historic Switzerland Inn , a visit to the North Carolina Mining Museum , a stop into Little Switzerland Books and Beans , and a night of live music and dancing at Geneva Hall . Just be sure to leave a moment, whether it’s closer to sunrise or sunset, to take in the spectacular views granted by the town’s elevation of nearly 3,500 feet.
