It seems fine and busy. Even at noon it took ten minutes to find a spot. I'm the only masked person here.

Clean store, showers & restrooms. Employees greet you with a smile & are very helpful. Loves are my favorite truck stop! We will go out of our way to find one. They also have both Subway & McDonalds inside. The only problem was that they ran out of fuel for a few hours earlier...luckily we had filled up up the road!

Showers...

Terrible customer service, rude ladies at the counter, I called ahead just to see if they had something in stock I was looking for and the ladies that answered the phone were rude, making comments to each other about me and what I was asking for... who does that these days ? anyways... just rude

Falling in love with Moscow in winter

A view of the snow covered St. Basil Cathedral in Moscow's Red Square. Source: Marina Lystseva / TASS

A view of the snow covered St. Basil Cathedral in Moscow's Red Square. Source: Marina Lystseva / TASS

A real Russian banya, a journey by sleigh, a carriage pulled by a troika of horses, swimming in icy waters, yachting on an icebreaker: these and other winter activities are possible in Moscow and its suburbs. Snow and ice not only do not disrupt these diversions, they enhance them and help reveal the glory of a real Russian winter.

Russian banya

love's travel stop 535

Source: Lori/Legion-Media

At first glance, the Russian banya looks like an extreme sport. Friends and strangers beat each other with branches from birch trees in a devilishly hot atmosphere. When this is finished, they   run for the exit to jump into an icy-cold pool. If you're alone, you can always hire an attendant to give you a beating. It is not only a wondrous feeling (trust me), but unbelievably good for you. You get a special burst of energy after taking a steam in a Russian bathhouse, because all of the toxins have been beaten out of you. Your skin becomes clean, taut and young.

Before hitting the banya take a warm shower so that your heart and blood vessels are ready for what comes next. It's not necessary to clean yourself with soap as your skin's natural oils will keep your skin from getting too dry. Some people rub essential oils into their skin. Banya goers wear special hats to protect their hair from the steam and laying down is considered by many to be the best way to enjoy a sauna.

Many people start out their steam on the lower level where the temperature is less intense. Immediately after each turn in the steam room you should take a shower, dive in the pool or roll around in the snow. If you don't rinse yourself off, the skin will absorb the sweat and with it all the harmful substances that have oozed out of your body.

Sanduny banya

Source: RIA Novosti/Ksenia Sidorova

The Sanduny is the city's main banya complex and has been around for more than 200 years. The interiors are marvelous and better service in Moscow is hard to find. Many movies have been filmed here and tourist groups and Hollywood actors alike are among its many guests.

The staff is active on social media and offer discounts for check-ins on the Swarm app by Foursquare and subscriptions on Instagram. There are additional services available such as massages and other kinds of spa treatments, as well as a beauty salon, restaurant and a laundry. Making a reservation in advance is highly recommended.

Seleznevskie banya This Moscow bathhouse has been around since the mid-19th century. The atmosphere is authentic and the place has not been fixed up in decades, so don't be surprised if it looks a little rough around the edges. The upside is that you can find many of the finest traditions of the Soviet period in practice here (when banyas became very popular as a form of relaxation), the steam is strong and they have an enormous pool and a small cafe. Reservations are not required.

Sledding with a troika of horses

love's travel stop 535

Source: TASS/Victor Sadchikov

A troika of horses pulling a sled is one of Russia's enduring symbols. Before the age of the automobile this was a popular form of transportation in Russia and they could travel up to 50 kilometers per hour. Nikolai Gogol even made a famous comparison of a speedy troika with the country on the whole: «Russia, where are you hurtling? Give an answer! There is no answer.» Every Russian school kid knows this fragment from Gogol's «Dead Souls.» Taking a sleigh ride today is a winter joy and an unforgettable pleasure.

Kolomensky Park A ride in a horse-drawn carriage can be a part of an excursion or an art program in Kolomensky Park. Orders can be made by phone and payments must be received at least three days in advance. The horses would appreciate it if you brought them a carrot or an apple.

Dogsledding

love's travel stop 535

Source: Shutterstock/Legion-Media

Northern huskies are the usual dog of choice for dogsledding as they are very friendly, sociable and playful canines who simply love to run. Unlike a horse-driven sleigh, whips and reins are not necessary for motivation. The dogs are in harnesses, but figure out what to do by verbal commands, without the need for physical cues.

Husky Land Orvlovsky Hotel Complex, Bogdanikha village, Leninsky District, Moscow Region +7 (915) 239-64-07 www.huskyland.ru Administrative hours of operation: 10:00-18:00

How to get there: By car: From the MKAD take the Kashirsky shosse (highway) towards Domodedovo Airport for 4.5 kilometers, then turn onto Volodarskoe shosse (towards Molokovo), then go another 6.7 kilometers until the turn for Bogdanikha village (on the right), then another 800 meters to the  Orvlovsky Hotel Complex. By public transportation: Take the metro to Domodedovskaya station and hop on minibus No. 367. Take it to bus stop «Derevnya Bogdanikha.» Take the path through the woods about 800 meters to the Orvlovsky Hotel Complex.

Swimming in winter

love's travel stop 535

Source: TASS/Zamir Usmanov

There are three options in Moscow for communing with winter's waters. See what you're made of and take a plunge through a hole carved into the ice (often in the shape of a cross) in mid-January during the Orthodox holiday, «Kreshcheniya,» which marks the date of Jesus' baptism. Water is believed to be holy and filled with special powers on this day (January 19). Close to the holiday special places in lakes and rivers will be prepared for the occasion. Other possibilities include going to an outdoor pool or taking a winter trip on the Moscow River aboard the Radisson Hotel's yacht.

Neptune pool Besides  the Chaika pool , you can also swim here in the open winter air in Russia's largest Olympic water sports complex. This is a great place for doing water sports and the temperatures stay quite comfortable no matter the weather. In order to swim bring identification that confirms you are at least 16 years old, a swim cap and a note from your doctor attesting that you are fit to swim.

3 day stop en route to Moscow - where would you go?

Hi everyone,

I am tentatively planning to join my parents who are visiting our relatives in Russia either in late July or in August. What really sparked my interest in this trip (aside from seeing family and introducing my husband to them, of course) was using this as an excuse for a quick stop elsewhere in Europe. I was thinking that since there are no direct flights from Seattle to Moscow anymore, my husband and I could start the trip by flying to a European destination, staying there for 3-4 days (not including travel days), and then continuing to Russia.

So far, my list of potential destinations includes: Dublin, Paris, Stockholm, London, and Prague. These are listed in my current order of preference, and it should be noted that we have already been to London and Prague. We are in our late 20s, more city oriented (but don't mind a day trip to the countryside), and mostly interested in live music, architecture, museums, markets, as well as tasting plenty of local food and beer.

If you were to recommend spending a few days in one of these cities, which would you choose? Or do you have any other suggestions with easy-ish transfer to Moscow (no more than 1 layover)? Thanks in advance!

I recommend Paris based on your preferences especially if you have never been there. I was there for the 3rd time last September and never tired of it. I am sure many will agree! Wherever you decide will be awesome. It is Europe after all!!

We have lived in London, Paris and Prague and I would recommend Prague for the live music, architecture (the city is like an art museum), markets, museums, great good, and its unique look and history. On the other hand, why not try St. Petersburg, Russia since you already have permission to enter the country? It is a gorgeous city and the Hermitage is even better than the Louvre (I love both). This is an easy transfer to Moscow for sure.

Out of your 5 cities there are direct flights from Seattle to London and Paris. You already have been to London. Your choice is easy - Paris. My educated guess is that there is a direct flight from Paris to Moscow.

Direct Flight Seattle Stockholm 1 day, take night ferry to Helsinki 1 day, take train to St Petersburg 1 day...fly, bus or train to Moscow.

If you've never been, you should go to Paris!

I've been to the places you listed, and while I'm glad to have seen all of them, I regret not going to Prague sooner. In my many years of travel, it exceeded my expectations - along with the other places in Czech Republic. I think our River Cruise from Moscow to St. Petersburg had a flight via either Copenhagen or Stockholm, both of which would be great visits.

Be aware of European vacations in August.

Kathleen has really good idea. Unfortunately there is no direct flight to Stockholm from Seattle. But you can do it with one change. That ferry from Stockholm to Helsinki is exciting. Then train from Helsinki to St. Petersburg. I would not recommend bus from S.P. to Moscow. It takes too long. Take fast train Sapsan (about 4 hours). It is expensive but worth it. Other trains take 8 to 10 hours. In that case take overnight sleeping compartment but it is not much cheaper than Sapsan. This could be your alternative to Paris.

In July, my first choice would be Stockholm. The Swedish summer is just beautiful. There is lots to do in Stockholm. The Vasa Museum is one of a kind. The Stadshuset (where the Nobel Prize is awarded) has a great tour. Good food markets are at Hötorget's Saluhallen (modern, ethnic, less expensive) and Östermalms Saluhallen (traditional, more expensive, and beautiful). There are a number of music venues. The only downside is that beer is expensive. If you take the ferry to Helsinki, you will find cheap beer on the ferry.

You could fly to Stockholm and then fly to Moscow OR overnight ferry from Stockholm to Helsinki. Spend the day there (leave luggage at locker in train station before Taking the overnight Ferry (St Peter Line) to St Petersburg. The St Peter Line goes every other day). Spend a couple of nights there before taking the train to Moscow.

Last summer, I traveled Helsinki - St Petersburg - Helsinki - Stockholm using the ferries, so feel free to PM me if you have questions. I also lived in Stockholm for a couple of years, so am a bit biased :)

Thanks for the feedback, everyone! For the record, while I would love to visit St. Petersburg (I feel like a bad Russian person having never been there), I don't think it's the right fit for this particular trip, since the whole idea is to take advantage of there being no direct flights to Russia and making an extended layover somewhere in Europe.

I have to say, I'm a little surprised at the recommendations for Stockholm/Helsinki/St. Petersburg itinerary, given this forum's propensity to advise against such fast-paced trips! It actually sounds amazing, but I think I'd prefer to stretch that trip into at least a couple of days in each place :)

I am definitely being swayed in the direction of Paris at the moment! Neither of us ever had a strong interest in specifically visiting Paris, but with direct flights to/from Moscow, this seems like the perfect opportunity to check it out and maybe fall in love with it the way everyone else seems to be! Although I am still kind of attached to the idea of checking out Dublin or having the excuse to drag my husband back to London so soon after our last trip.

From Russia With Love. (Photos from Moscow here)

After years of wanting to come to this country and months off my life waiting for the its-such-a-pain-in-the-ass-for-Americans-to-get visa to go through, we are finally in Russia. First stop: Moscow. And it is beautiful. The buildings go back and forth between the very blocky and structured 70s soviet-style and the iconic, ornate Russian Revival style we picture with Russian architecture (am I the only one who has spent time thinking about this??) It’s such a walkable city, perhaps even moreso than New York (gasp), and the grandness and history behind it all gives Paris a run for its money (two gasps). There’s the impressiveness of the Kremlin, with its high red walls, double-headed eagles and glowing red stars outside, and its many churches and museums inside. The Red Square is vast and imposing and gorgeous, especially at night (I passed on Lenin’s tomb). St. Basile Cathedral, with its nine domes in a riot of colors and shapes, looks like something from Candy Land. The Russian orthodox churches are on every corner and beyond ornate, with mosaic tiles and gold leaf and soaring ceilings and cupolas and candles everywhere — they make the catholic churches look simple (three gasps – I’m done for today). There are no seats inside, and during the long 3-hour service people walk throughout the church praying, often kissing icons of Jesus or saints placed around the church. In all of the churches, women cover their head, tourist or not, something most of us don’t do even in the Vatican, and I loved watching the church-goers pray (yes I hear the creepiness there), with their sign of the cross that’s repeated several times and goes in the opposite direction of catholics’. When I was done stalking worshippers, we went to the opera at the famous Bolshoi Theatre, had dinner at the extravagantly Russian Cafe Pushkin, afternoon drinks at the beautiful outside bar Strelka overlooking the Moscow river where we heard the bells of Christ the Savior church ring every hour, walked around Gorky Park and generally discovered as much of the city on foot as we could. We found the Fallen Monument Sculpture Park by accident and it was crazy — statues of Soviet heroes taken down throughout Moscow after the Soviet Union dissolved in the early 90s, come here to live as if in a graveyard. It’s eerie, while at the same time (Dad I’m sorry and history buffs forgive me) even a little kitschy.  We stayed with a friend’s family (Hi Yado!) and they were so kind and generous and welcoming and just all-around awesome that we never wanted to leave. We haven’t felt that at home since we were actually home. It was also our preview to the famous White Nights we would see in Saint Petersburg. One night we went to a bar with our hosts to watch the America’s Cup soccer championship game — Chile played Argentina at 11pm. When we walked out, at 2am, the sky was already getting light, and by 3am it was full-blown daytime. We often don’t want to leave a place when we go, but we REALLY didn’t want to leave Moscow. We loved its vibe, even without speaking Russian, and no, most people we met did not speak English. Even global brands like Starbucks, Subway and Dunkin’ Donuts (yep, in the train station) are in Russian, and I’m talking about the big neon signage, not just the menu (actually today I stood in front of a store shelf for 10 minutes trying to decide which bottle is shampoo and which is conditioner — finally Anthony called over a store clerk for help and we played a fun game of washing-hair charades). And we loved the culture: 24 hour bars and restaurants– even the swankiest ones. Papers posted in every ticket window, from museums to train stations, listing regularly scheduled breaks for the window worker. If you were in line when a break came up, you’re gonna have to wait. Also no one here fully understands the concept of waiting in line, so really you either stand your ground so no one cuts in front of you (yayyyy finally my kind of place) or you wait til tonight when everyone is gone. We just nodded, looked around and took it all in. Alas, after a few days we said goodbye to Moscow and hopped a high-speed train for Saint Petersburg, which I’ll write about next. Now though I’m plotting how we can go back to the capitol before our its-such-a-pain-in-the-ass-for-Americans-to-get visa is up at the end of this month. Below are photos of our fun. Hope you enjoy.

Where we ate that we really iiked:

Cafe Pushkin (very well-appointed, for traditional Russian food and ambience)

Elardzhi (for amazing Georgian food)

Strelka (complex of old factories turned into restos and bars)
