Masai Village Visit in Nairobi.

Masai Village Visit in Nairobi

Masai Village visit in  Nairobi Information.

East Africa is home to several African Tribes, Masai Village Visit in Nairobi is an insight into understanding the tribe Masai which is one of the most famous tribes. This nomadic, warrior tribe which once held vast swathes of pre-colonial Kenya, still retains many of their traditions as they live largely unaffected by modern-day civilization, in areas surrounding Masai Mara. This typically one-hour visit to a Maasai village is a chance to not just interact with the Maasai, but also to get a glimpse into their unique way of life.

The majority of Maasai still practice their traditional way of life and live as pastoralists with cattle at the center of their culture and social life. They are very proud to welcome guests and tell them about their everyday life in the bush.

Incredible Kenya Adventures supports the local Maasai community and guests are able to visit the Masai Village, the local primary school, and the busy Maasai market.

Traditional Maasai village

The traditional Masai village is called a Manyatta and consists of a number of small cow-dung-made huts with thatched roofs. The huts are placed in a circle with livestock in the middle and a thick thorny fence for protection against nightly predators.

The Ngong hills Masai Village has inhabitants and guests visiting this traditional Maasai Manyatta who will spend time learning about their life, culture, and customs. Mornings are cool and usually busy for the women and girls with milking of cows and goats; later the herders take the cattle for grazing on the Mara plains.

A visit to a Masai Boma (Maasai village tour) is an interesting experience. As you arrive at the village, excited children and adults welcome you with song and dance, At certain times, one of the dancers will jump up and down gracefully. The jumps are several feet high! You will be invited to try jumping- (dancing), too, to your dismay you will be no match for their levitation act!!

You will then be welcomed into one of the homesteads in the village, the village huts (called Manyatta) are made of cow dung and clay plastered over stick frames. This is quite practical, the Masai maintain cattle herds, and the dung is always in generous supply and its free.

One of your hosts will give you an insight into Maasai life, some of them may not speak English but our guides will interpret for you and the elders so that stories may be exchanged. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn about the history and lifestyle of these Maasai. You may ask as many questions as you like and take photographs.

After the Village visit, you have the option of visiting the Masai market. Which is held every day of the week apart from Monday in different locations in Nairobi shopping malls ‘ parking bays. You will see many villagers buying and selling a variety of goods including homeopathic remedies, local clothing, and other curios.

The money collected from this tour is plowed back into the local Maasai community to cater for social amenities and the development of the villages.

Some of the Reviews

Maasai village is a chance to not just interact with the Maasai, but also to get a glimpse into their unique way of life.

0830 Hours: Masai rural village & Maasai’s village day tour starts with a pick up by our driver guide from your Nairobi hotel.

The Maasai tribe (or Masai) is a unique and popular tribe due to their long-preserved culture. Despite education, civilization and western cultural influences, the Maasai people have clung to their traditional way of life, making them a symbol of Kenyan culture.

Maasai's distinctive culture, dress style and strategic territory along the game parks of Kenya and Tanzania have made them one of East Africa's most internationally famous tourist attractions.

The Maasai people reside in both Kenya and Tanzania, living along the border of the two countries. They are a smaller tribe, accounting for only about 0.7 percent of Kenya's population, with a similar number living in Tanzania. The Maasai speak Maa, a Nilotic ethnic language from their origin in the Nile region of North Africa.

The Samburu tribe is the closest to the Maasai in both language and cultural authenticity.

A day trip to a Masai village near Nairobi is a half day affair where we visit the Masai people living next to the Ngong hills.

0900 Hours: Drive westwards towards the Ngong hills which was named by the Maasai meaning the knuckles of the hand of God. This is the uncanny resemblance of the 5 peaks on the hill to the knuckles of a fist. Masai folklore has it that once a upon a time God was so angry with the Maasai people that he thrust his fist right above the ground and there it remains to date.

1000 Hours: Arrive at the masai village and interact with the masai with a couple of activities to engage in including a mock wedding dance, masai warrior (moran) jumping dance, engage in some beadwork with the women, practice some traditional archery and spear throwing, learn the art of making a fire in the bush among many others things to see and do.

1300 Hours: Enjoy a lunch (Own Account) at a mall in Karen area or a packed lunch.

1400 Hours: Drive back to hotel in town.

1600 Hours: Drop off in your hotel.

  • One Day at Masai Village - Trip from Nairobi

Short Overview

Make your visit to Kenya a complete experience - not only amazing wildlife, enchanting beaches, and the metropolis, there’s culture and tradition to explore, too.

Visit a Masai village and grab the opportunity to learn about traditional life first-hand!

This genuine experience will give you a unique insight into their day-to-day life, culture, habits, traditions, cuisine, and joy.

And, very important is, that you’re most welcome here. These people agree to visits and are happy to share their lives with strangers.

Your Journey Mapped Out

Ready to set out? Your adventure awaits!

DAY 1 - NAIROBI - MASAI VILLAGE - NAIROBI

We’ll pick you up at your hotel in Nairobi at the agreed time and take you to visit a village of one of the most renowned communities in Africa - a Masai tribe.

The centre of Masai life is undoubtedly their cattle, which represents the primary source of food. A typical Masai diet consists of milk (mostly fermented), fresh blood, and meat, in this order. Vegetables and fruit are more a snack, if so. You’d expect them to be quite unhealthy, but you’d be wrong. They ingest many bitter herbs with the active ingredient saponin, which reduces cholesterol, so they do not develop heart or vascular diseases. And their teeth - mesmerizing white smiles shine on every mouth since they almost don’t develop any caries.

So health they have. And the wealth is measured in numbers of cattle and children - both have to be plenty. If a man has plenty of one and not of the other, he's considered to be poor.

But - all will be explained on-site!

You’ll join women at milking their herds of cows and goats, making beautiful beadwork, cooking, and doing all the rest. Have a dance with the community members and listen to their stories from today and generations ago. Learn from ancient wisdom and see the modern changes.

After you’re filled with impressions and decorated with beautiful handmade beaded jewellery, we’ll tear you apart from the kind hosts and bring you back to your hotel or airport in Nairobi.

Immerse yourself in authentic Maasai culture as you visit a traditional village, accompanied by an English-speaking guide who lives there himself.

Find yourself in the midst of the daily hustle and bustle of local life as you witness the daily rituals of the Maasai. Once you have drunk your fill of this authentic cultural experience, you can choose to browse through the Maasai Craft Centre and purchase artefacts made by the people you encountered. All proceeds from this go directly to the community.

Living a semi-nomadic lifestyle, the Maasai tribe has modernised in some ways but still adheres to many aspects of their traditional culture. Established as fierce warriors, their lively cultural dance, vibrant clothing and beautifully crafted handiwork are recognised worldwide.

The Maasai used to move nomadically with their herds to abundant lush pastures but these days they have built permanent huts or bomas and prefer to stay in once place. They are pastoralists and cattle is essential to their way of life. A man’s success is measured by the number of cattle and offspring he has. As great a status and show of wealth the cattle are, they are also a vital food source. This glimpse of authentic Maasai culture is a fascinating experience of an ancient way of life that still flourishes today.

Welcome to Kenya, Welcome to Oyaratta Village

Hello, or as we say in the Maa language, "Supa"! My name is Steve. I'm a Maasai, son of the village chief, living in my family's village in the Maasai Mara. I grew up here, then went to university in the city, before returning back to my village to continue my traditions. You are very welcome to come and visit us. I'd love to give you a tour and show you our culture.

You can contact me via WhatsApp – my phone number is at the bottom of this webpage. However, because I need to walk to a nearby village to recharge my phone (we don't have electricity in the village), sometimes I may be delayed in replying. Thank you for your patience.

Looking forward to welcoming you to our village!

–Steve Simpai

About your visit to Oyaratta Village

Our village is called Oyaratta Village, named after the great valley and the sloping of the mountain. The village has been operating for over 23 years. We feel very lucky. Nearby our village is a water stream which feeds water into the Mara river. We've also been able to build a successful school for the local children in our community.

If you are coming to the Mara to go on safari, it will be very convenient to visit us. We're not too far from the big park entrance (Masai Mara National Reserve Main Gate), just off the main road (C12). Have your tour guide call me and I can direct them.

In the village we do a lot of cultural activities, such as the dancing of the warriors and women – these ceremonies are normally performed on special occasions like marriage, naming ceremonies and the blessing of our warriors before they go hunting.

We will show you our traditional huts , our bead making and wood cutting , and how we make fire using natural wood . Sometimes we will show you how we prepare a special mixture of animal blood and milk. This is used in 'rights of passage' ceremonies.

We have some beautiful handmade souvenirs available for purchase, so bring some cash. USD, EUR and KES are all OK.

We also have some optional extras :

Men can go on a nature walk with the warriors , where they can experience various animals up close , practice spear throwing, steel working and shoe - making , as well as domestic animal marking, i.e. ear notching.

Learn how to create beautiful beaded jewellery with our Maasai ladies.

Wear our beautiful attires during the visit for better quality photos as they engaged in our divine roles.

Women can dress as part of our tribe and be taken to river to fetch water and bring back to our home for domestic use, as well as wood fetching.

Bird watching .

Experiencing our nightly songs , especially when our cows are coming back home.

A traditional Maasai House home stay for visitors who want to further experience our amazing nomadic lifestyle.

Masai village visit

Experience the history and culture of Masai tribesmen while visiting either Masai Mara National Reserve or Amboseli National Park

This visit is optional while on your Kenya safari . If you would like to visit a Masai village , please arrange with your tour driver guide A visit to a Maasai Boma ( Masai village tour ) is an interesting experience. As you arrive at the village, excited children and adults welcome you with song and dance, at certain times, one of the dancers will jump up and down gracefully. The jumps are several feet high! You will be invited to try jumping -(dancing), too, to your dismay you will be no match for their levitation act!!

You will then be welcomed into one of the h omesteads in the village, The village huts (called Manyatta ) are made of cow dung and clay plastered over stick frames. this is quite practical, the Masai maintain cattle herd s, and the dung is always in generous supply, and it’s free. One of your host will give you an insight into Maasai life , some of them may not speak English but our guides will interpret for you and the elders so that stories may be exchanged. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn about the history and lifestyle of these Maasai . You may ask as many questions as you like and take photographs .

The Masai Market is held every Tuesday (if you are lucky and your tours falls on this day) you will see many villagers buying and selling a variety of goods including homeopathic remedies, local clothing and cereals. You may even taste the local brews. Here you will get an opportunity to buy a souvenir to take back home, a memoir to cherish.

The money collected from this tour is ploughed back to the local Maasai community to cater for social amenities and development of the villages.

Maasai village tours

Maasai village tours : Many of us grew up watching National Geographic or Discovery channel films about the wild Africa. There is one warrior tribe that nearly always appears on television as the cameras pan across the plains of East Africa: the Maasai. They are clad in striking reds and blues. These pastoralists who lead a semi-nomadic lifestyle reside in and around the Northern Tanzanian and Southern Kenyan rift valley regions. You will witness the vibrant Maasai grazing their livestock or attempting to sell you their artwork as you travel on your safari towards the national parks in this area.

But did you know that as part of your safari tour, you can also go to their village and engage with them while getting a glimpse into their distinctive way of life and customs? Whether that sounds intriguing, see whether you would like to include a Maasai village tour in your itinerary by reading the full article to learn more about what to expect. It typically takes one to one and a half hours to visit the Maasai community, and you are supposed to tip the Maasai village head $20 (per client). But, it is also possible to arrange for you to stay at the village for a longer period of time. Please verify with your sales consultant for a longer visit you will not regret.

The First Look.

The villagers will assemble to welcome you to their land as soon as your guide leads you into the settlement. Tall men and women will begin to jump and sing as they are clad in the vibrant crimson Shuka. In order to attract ladies, the Maasai males will jump as high as they can during the dance, and the air will be filled with the lovely singing of the women. But you are welcome to take part in the festivities as well. When the powerful warriors approach and cover you in their exquisitely crafted necklaces, you can join them in dancing or jumping.

Getting to really know them.

You can now really get to know the Maasai up close and personal after the exciting beginning. This is something you could never have accomplished by seeing them on television or by simply driving by and taking note of them. You will be brought straight into the Boma, or village, by the villagers. A Maasai camp consists of a number of mud homes surrounded by branches of native Acacia tortilis, Seyal, and Sisal trees.

You are welcome to speak and ask questions of the villagers inside the camp. After all, this is supposed to be a cultural exchange. The guide will interpret for you in Maa, the local language. Additionally, you can practice long jumps and spear throwing with a Maasai warrior by your side. They developed their prowess through these competitions, which are a component of their military traditions. Participating in these competitions will then be a rather special  safari experience . In order to view how the families live, you can also go inside the homes. However, you may find the homes to be somewhat dark and small.

A visit to the Maasai school.

Despite being a nomadic group that mostly depends on their surroundings for resources, the Maasai nonetheless practice commerce and education in their modern culture. The guide will take you to meet some of the prettiest members of the little society little children at schools after you get to tour the houses and participate in a number of thought-provoking activities with the adults. When you enter a classroom, built out of twigs and mud as well, the kids will stand up and show off their knowledge. In particular, their proficiency in English. The children will sing-along with you while they chant their ABCD and numbers, and they may even put on a few English tunes.

You may observe, though, that this portion of the tour seems a little manufactured. They’ll probably do the same thing for the following group of visitors. However, you don’t have to be concerned about how this may impact their schooling. The majority of the students in these programs are younger than seven and have not yet been enrolled in a traditional school. When they are old enough, children who want to study hard will be sent to a regular school and won’t be asked to perform these kinds of performances for visitors.

Donations towards the education of these children are welcome if you so choose. Therefore, having some spare coin on hand would be useful. Donations of books, crayons, and pens are also accepted. However, you have to first disclose these goods to the village elders. It must be noted that not all the Maasai villages have a school.

After you’ve completed the village tour, things get complicated. You will be shown where to purchase different handicrafts and jewelry made by Maasai people. The initial costs given are far higher than the actual rates (about 4 to 10 times higher!) that you would pay for these products in marketplaces like Arusha or Mto Wa Mbu, even though the variety may be decent and you may feel compelled to purchase items as keepsakes.

Maasai village tours

You can offer a rate that suits you if you consider the amount they quote to be a donation to a community that is impoverished. However, if you are determined to purchase an item and are not ready to donate at that time, don’t be afraid to bargain and get the price lowered. Should the whole bartering and pushy sales style make you uneasy, you might want to think again before visiting the Maasai village. Nonetheless, we advise our clients to consider these purchases as gifts to the Maasai village. The creation of national parks and reserves has drastically altered the Maasai way of life, because many of their everyday needs are met by the money that visitors bring in.

Maasai community that hosts you at the temporary camp, which is set up in tourist circuits (particularly in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area at the crater rim) to provide Maasai village visits, changes every few weeks. They therefore only have a brief window of opportunity to earn money before returning to their home villages and their more traditional way of life.

Now that you’ve gone shopping, your visit will officially end. Even though you will be fully immersed in the culture, there will be moments on the tour that appear produced and moments that look authentic. Nevertheless, it will be an experience unlike anything else. You will see how significant they have been for the environment when you speak with them. Their collaboration has been essential to the ongoing existence of famous national parks and ecosystems, and their expertise has aided the government in its efforts to conserve the natural world. You’ll also be able to respect their steadfastness in this rapidly evolving world. Thus, savor each moment, absorb as much as you can, and broaden your understanding of the environment you inhabit.

Maasai Village Tours occur in multiple locations.

RIM of Ngorongoro Crater, the Maasai village that receives the most visitors is this one. Customers travelling through Ngorongoro to reach the Serengeti or crater tours can easily reach it. Because of its crater rim location, it’s also the most picturesque of all. But compared to other villages, this feels more manufactured, and the Maasai here are more aggressive in their sales tactics.

There is a Maasai village in the vicinity of Lake Natron, and clients that include Lake Natron in their schedule can take advantage of these tours. This visit feels more authentic than other places since the Maasai villages you visit are permanent (in contrast to many other destinations where Maasai tours take place in villages where inhabitants rotate periodically to share cash gained from giving these tours for clients). You’ll have the opportunity to watch the cows being milked, observe the Maasai people building their stoves, and even participate in these activities. Here, you can even extend your visit to a Maasai hamlet by up to six hours.

There are more Maasai communities close to Mto Wa Mbu, Tarangire, Arusha, and Mikumi National Park, the boundary between the Serengeti and Ngorongoro, and Moshi. The majority of these communities are situated along route to significant locations like Tarangire National Park, Arusha National Park, and so forth. If the clients still want to see a Maasai hamlet but are unable to make it to the villages on the crater rim or around Lake Natron, they can still visit these places.

What to expect when visiting a Maasai Village

What to expect when visiting a Maasai Village : When visiting a Maasai village, you can expect to experience a unique and culturally rich environment. The Maasai people are a semi-nomadic ethnic group located primarily in Kenya and Tanzania. Here are some things you can expect when visiting a Maasai village:

Traditional Greeting

Upon arrival, you will likely be welcomed by the Maasai villagers with a traditional greeting. The Maasai often perform a special dance called the “Adumu” or “jumping dance” as part of their warm welcome.

The traditional greeting when visiting a Maasai village is often a warm and lively exchange. Here’s an overview of the traditional greeting customs:

Handshake: The Maasai often greet visitors with a handshake. It is customary to extend your right hand for a handshake while maintaining eye contact. This gesture signifies respect and friendship.

Verbal Greeting: The Maasai commonly say “Sopa” (pronounced soh-pah) when greeting visitors. It means “hello” or “welcome” in the Maasai language. You can respond with “Sopa” or “Hello” to reciprocate the greeting.

Singing and Dancing: As part of the greeting ceremony, the Maasai may perform their traditional songs and dances. This includes the famous “Adumu” or “jumping dance,” where the Maasai warriors showcase their strength and agility by leaping high in the air. You may be invited to join in the dancing if you feel comfortable doing so.

Blessing: In some instances, the village elder or a respected member of the community may offer a blessing to the visitors. This can involve prayers, words of wisdom, or wishes for good fortune and safe travels.

Exchanging Names: It is common for the Maasai to exchange names during the greeting process. They may ask for your name and share their own names as a way to establish a personal connection and foster a sense of camaraderie.

Remember to approach the greeting ceremony with an open mind and a respectful attitude. Engaging with the Maasai people in their cultural traditions can create a meaningful and memorable experience for both visitors and the local community.

Traditional Dress

The Maasai are known for their distinctive clothing. Both men and women wear colorful and intricately designed garments. The Maasai warriors, or morans, often wear brightly coloured shukas (robes) wrapped around their bodies, while women wear beaded necklaces, bracelets, and earrings.

The Maasai people are renowned for their distinctive and vibrant traditional dress, which is an essential part of their cultural identity. Here’s an overview of the traditional Maasai attire:

Shuka: The shuka is the most iconic piece of clothing worn by the Maasai. It is a large, rectangular piece of fabric made from vibrant, checked or plaid patterns in various colours. The shuka is draped over the shoulder, wrapped around the body, and fastened with a pin or knot. It serves as a versatile garment that provides warmth, protection from the sun, and a cultural symbol.

Beadwork: Beadwork is an integral part of Maasai attire, particularly for women. The Maasai are skilled artisans in beadwork, and they create intricate designs using colorful glass beads. Women wear beaded necklaces, bracelets, and earrings that showcase their craftsmanship. The beadwork often carries cultural significance, representing aspects such as age, marital status, and social standing.

Accessories: The Maasai adorn themselves with various accessories. Men and women wear leather belts adorned with beads, which are not only decorative but also functional in holding weapons such as knives. Maasai warriors (morans) may wear headdresses made from ostrich feathers or other plumes during ceremonial events.

Sandals: Maasai sandals, known as akala or oshaki, are made from cowhide. They consist of a simple sole with leather straps that wrap around the foot and ankle, providing protection and support. The sandals are often intricately decorated with beadwork.

It’s important to note that while traditional attire holds great cultural significance for the Maasai people, modern influences and changes in lifestyle have led to some variations in dress among different Maasai communities. In more urban settings, you may also see Maasai individuals wearing Western-style clothing alongside traditional garments.

When visiting a Maasai village, it’s respectful to appreciate and admire their traditional dress, but it’s essential to do so without appropriating or disrespecting their cultural heritage.

Traditional Dwellings

What to expect when visiting a Maasai Village

Maasai villages are typically made up of small, circular huts called “manyattas.” These huts are constructed using a framework of wooden poles and covered with a mixture of cow dung, mud, and grass, providing insulation and protection from the elements.

The traditional dwellings of the Maasai people are called manyattas. These dwellings are small, circular huts made from natural materials, and they are an integral part of Maasai culture. Here’s an overview of Maasai traditional dwellings:

Construction: Manyattas are typically constructed by the women of the Maasai community. They begin by assembling a framework of wooden poles, which are interwoven and fastened together. The framework is then covered with a mixture of mud, cow dung, and grass to form the walls. The mixture provides insulation and helps to keep the interior cool during hot days and warm during cool nights.

Design and Layout: Manyattas are circular in shape, with a conical or dome-like roof. The walls are usually about six to eight feet high. The interior space is compact and consists of a single room, which serves as a multi-purpose area for sleeping, cooking, and socializing. The floor is covered with a mixture of soil and cow dung, providing a smooth and hard surface.

Division of Space: Inside the manyatta, the space is often divided into sections for specific purposes. For example, there may be separate areas for cooking, sleeping, and storing personal belongings. The Maasai maintain a simple and functional layout that suits their daily activities and lifestyle.

Mobility: Traditionally, the Maasai were semi-nomadic pastoralists, constantly moving in search of water and pasture for their livestock. Manyattas were designed to be easily dismantled and reconstructed, allowing the community to relocate as needed. The portability of these dwellings reflects the Maasai’s deep connection to their livestock and the importance of mobility in their way of life.

While traditional manyattas are still used by some Maasai communities, it’s worth noting that modernization and changing circumstances have led to the adoption of more permanent structures, such as houses made with bricks and corrugated iron sheets in some areas.

When visiting a Maasai village, it’s important to respect the cultural significance of their dwellings. Seek permission before entering any manyatta and be mindful of the customs and traditions associated with these spaces.

Cultural Demonstrations

During your visit, you may have the opportunity to witness cultural demonstrations showcasing various aspects of Maasai life. This may include traditional songs, dances, and performances by warriors and women. You might also learn about their traditional crafts, such as beadwork and spear-making.

Maasai villages

A Maasai village in East Africa

To enjoy a day with Maasai people book a luxury hotel in Amboseli National Park

The structure of this village differs from that of the family because it has no protective enclosure; this environment is created with the purpose of stressing the fact that a manyatta is inhabited by warriors who do not need any protection.

A manyatta does not even present the typical animal enclosure, since young warriors do not own cattle for they have to be able to hunt for food by themselves or collect what nature has to offer them.

At the centre of the village, instead of the cattle enclosure, a pole is usually set into the ground for a white and blue flag to be raised on top of it, that is the flag of the Maasai nation and it usually remains raised as long as the moran are out for hunting.

On average a moran lives in this kind of village for about 10 years; during this period they have the chance to fraternize with one another; what’s more important, they practice to become real warriors, they develop the art of oratory and study to delve into their knowledge of animal farming.

At the end the moran return to their fathers’ villages, where they live until they find a wife; at that point they create a new village for their wives and their cattle.
