Napalm Death Announce ‘Campaign For Musical Destruction’ Australian Tour

By Jules LeFevre

British outfit Napalm Death will head down under for an Australian tour in September this year. The tour will get underway at Magnet House in Perth on Tuesday, 5th September, before moving through most most major cities before finishing in Brisbane a week later.

The band will be joined at all dates by Singapore outfit WORMROT , who are fresh off the release of their album HISS. Napalm Death’s last album was 2022’s Resentment is Always Seismic – A Final Throw of Throes, which served as a companion record to 2020’s Throes Of Joy In The Jaws Of Defeatism.

Napalm Death: ‘Amoral’

Napalm Death are widely considered to be pioneers of grindcore, and have released 17 albums across their long career, which began in 1981. None of the founding members of the band remain, but the lineup has mostly stayed the same since the early 1990s.

Guitarist Mitch Harris found himself in hot water recently , being put on blast over bizarre comments he made about “cunts that claim benefits”, “dole scroungers” and (??) “lads with manbags”. Harris was promptly put in his place by Sleaford Mods’ Jason Williamson.

Napalm Death Australia Tour With WORMROT

  • Tuesday, 5th Sep – Magnet House Perth
  • Thursday, 7th Sep – Lion Arts Factory Adelaide
  • Friday, 8th Sep – The Factory Theatre Sydney
  • Saturday, 9th Sep – The Croxton Melbourne
  • Tuesday, 12th Sep – The Triffid Brisbane

Tickets are on sale Thursday, 11th May at 9am.

More Napalm Death

In exactly three weeks from today (August 22), Napalm Death will be kicking off the Australian leg of their Campaign For Musical Destruction . The impending five-date tour marks their first Down Under in six years, during which time they released their 16th album, 2020’s Throes Of Joy In The Jaws Of Defeatism . To prepare ourselves for the grindcore tour of the year, we caught up with lead vocalist Mark ‘Barney’ Greenway to flip the script a little bit and discuss the songs that make Napalm Death feel alive .

A song that reminds you of a best friend

A bit of an obscure one – I had to have a think about this. Years and years back, ex- Bolt Thrower drummer Andy Whale bought an album by an old straight-edge band, Half Off , called The Truth , and we were hammering that for a bit round his flat. It was fairly full-on as that kind of band goes, and it still gets mentioned now whenever we speak.

A song that changed your music taste forever

Don't miss a beat with our FREE daily newsletter

Motörhead – Overkill . That took things to another level.

A song you play after a long day

Anything at all by Explosions In The Sky . That stuff just washes over you brilliantly.

The perfect love song

Flux Of Pink Indians – Love Song . Because in some forms love is such a one-sided act of oppression.

Your favourite song you've ever written

Hard to pin one down, but I think A Bellyful Of Salt And Spleen would be one of them. I really stretched myself vocally, wasn’t sure I could get to where I wanted with it, but it turned out even better than I anticipated.

The best lyric you've ever written

I really couldn’t say.

A song by your biggest inspiration

Siege – Starvation . A big inspiration amongst many other inspirations…

If your life was made into a movie, what would play as the opening credits?

Meat Means Murder by Conflict . One of life’s major realisations.

The song highest on your rotation at the moment

I don’t do rotation per se, but I’ve been hammering Cabaret Voltaire at the moment. Let’s say Landslide , but it could be anything from the Red Mecca album.

Favourite song to scream in the car

I don’t scream in the car – I’m a very relaxed driver. The Curse by Slaughter was really rattling the chassis in my car recently, though.

A song that was played at the first-ever gig you went to

Motörhead again. Damage Case – nasty as fuck.

A song that was played at the last gig you went to see

Vultures by Dropdead . That band does not mess around.

A road trip essential song

Tour De France by Kraftwerk on longer drives. It’s sublimely monotonous when you’re clocking up the miles. You could almost be pedalling your own car.

NAPALM DEATH. One of the most influential and legendary acts in the history of heavy metal, and considered by all, as the fathers of grindcore. Over 40 years on and seventeen albums in, NAPALM DEATH are in no way, shape or form of slowing down. As stated in their own words, silence sucks, noise is always the answer and they continue to create music that confronts, confounds and eviscerates in equal measure. Grinding faces with the best of them will be Singapore’s vitriolic extreme noise terrorists WORMROT. Released in 2022, their latest album HISS has been heralded as one of the best modern grind albums, period! Their performances are intense, spectacular, furious, a barrage of unrelenting, head-caving abuse, honed by a singular determination to fucking destroy the competition. Get it or get out of the way!!

Hailing from the West Midlands, UK, Napalm Death helped establish the sound of grindcore in the late 80s, combining bludgeoning thrash/death metal with hardcore punk to create their uniquely brutal sonic assault, helping to influence the next generation of heavy music.

The band began in 1981, initially inspired by the anarcho-punk movement of bands such as Crass. As the decade progressed, they began incorporating more hardcore, post punk and thrash metal elements, before eventually finding the extreme sound of their 1987 debut, “Scum.” The more extreme direction of the band prompted a number of members to leave, including Justin Broadrick, who would later go on to find fame with Godflesh and Jesu. The album was a critical success, building reputation for their incendiary live performances and radio sessions, gaining significant support from BBC Radio One DJ, John Peel.

The band solidified their lineup by 1989, featuring vocalist Mark “Barney” Greenway, bassist Shane Embury, guitarist Mitch Harris and drummer Danny Herrera. In 1990, they released “Harmony Corruption,” which moved towards a more conventional sound. However, the end result did not satisfy the members, returning with an all-out grindcore assault with the EP, “Mass-Appeal Madness.” Their 1994 “Fear, Emptiness, Despair” earned Napalm Death their biggest success yet, surprisingly entering the the top ten of the US charts, after being featured on the soundtrack for the film “Mortal Kombat.”

Napalm Death continued to release critical acclaimed albums, including 1995’s “Diatribes” and 1999’s “Words from the Exit Wound.” They returned to their early sound in the new millennium, with “Enemy of the Music Business,” in 2001. With an astonishing thirty years at the forefront of extreme music, they continued to release high quality albums, celebrating their 15th album, “Utilitarian” in 2012.

Live reviews

Hellfest was lit up like crazy when Napalm Death took the stage. They are a band that brings the heaviest performance they have at all times. The crazy lights there were going off just added to the intensity of the show.

The first song that they played was a familiar one to all of the metal fans in the crowd including myself. It was titled 'Take the Poison'. Since Napalm Death's singer does so much deep growling and screaming we could not really sing along per say but we were all screaming, yelling, and headbanging.

Napalm Death wanted us to create a moshpit and circle pit during the middle of the set and that got people going crazy. The members were not wearing any special clothes but the drumset was like a prop in itself. It was so large that I could not even fathom how the drummer could play it but he did very well.

The entire show was fantastic and Napalm Death's singer just said 'Thank you!' at the end of the set and although we all knew they were not sentimental type of guys, they were still grateful that all of us fans came to the metal show to have a great time.

Report as inappropriate

Bat, Rotten Sound and Misery Index were great and gave me some neck pain. As much as I love the bands mentioned above, Misery Index managed to play the best show that night, they just played too correct and their way of interacting with the audience is just nice.

I'm not a fan of EyeHateGod or sludge in general, but their performance has left its mark on my memory and I would definitely like to see them live again. Mike Williams is simply a unique personality, and it's very interesting to see him live, but admittedly his way of interacting with the crowd draws a certain amount of hatred.

Napalm are machines and always give a great show, Barney is an incredible front man who will make sure you never get bored.

The audience in general was quite nice, not small in number, well-behaved and very lively.

The organizers did a good job, I had no problems finding the location, the toilets were adequate, the bars worked perfectly etc.

All in all a great performance, and I would recommend any of the bands listed to anyone.

Napalm Death never fails to deliver the most brutal hard pounding shows. The House of Blues exploded last night in a fit of fury and while it was one of the most brutal pits I can remember because of the small size of the venue, it is always a pit of respect as brothers and sisters party and hang out together. Truly a memorable show and the sound was also spot on. To the grandfathers of Death Metal, Napalm Death, I salute you and see you again next time around.

Napalm Death are credited as pioneers of the grindcore genre by incorporating elements of crust punk and death metal, using a noise-filled sound that uses heavily distorted, down-tuned guitars, grinding overdrive bass, high speed tempo, blast beats, and vocals which consist of incomprehensible growls, or high-pitched shrieks, extremely short songs, fast tempos, and sociopolitical lyrics.

Even after exerting an indelible influence on the entire world of heavy music for nearly 40 years, there is still no band on Earth that sounds like Napalm Death. Not just the pioneers, but an enduring benchmark for invention and fearlessness in heavy and experimental music of all kinds, the Birmingham legends are still hurtling forward at full pelt.

Napalm Death

Napalm Death’s Campaign For Musical Destruction tour featuring Wormrot ,  plus special guests Extortion and Remains, dropped into Melbourne last night. It was a sold out show at The Croxton .

NAPALM DEATH .

Grinding faces with the best of them will be Singapore’s vitriolic extreme noise terrorists WORMROT .  Released in 2022, their latest album HISS has been heralded as one of the best modern grind albums, period!

Their performances are intense, spectacular, furious, a barrage of unrelenting, head-caving abuse, honed by a singular determination to fucking destroy the competition.

Wall Of Sound

Barney Greenway – Ready to Napalm Australia to Death this September

Posted on August 25, 2023 by duanejames

napalm death australian tour 2023

After 6 years away and a pandemic in between, Grindcore pioneers Napalm Death are finally coming back to Australia. They’ve been flat out in those 6 years having released the two albums Throes Of Joy In The Jaws Of Defeatism (2020) and Resentment Is Always Seismic – a final throw of Throes (2022). Additionally, they’ve been flat out touring in the wake of Covid restrictions and we’re finally getting the opportunity to see them in person across Australia and New Zealand this September.

Wall of Sound resident metal bogan Duane James got zooming from Higher Ground Tattoos and Records in Kurrajong NSW with legendary vocalist Barney Greenway for a chat. Along for the ride is Higher Ground owner, tattoo artist and huge Napalm Death fan Paulie Surridge to chime in on the conversation. Let’s hook in.

DJ: After 6 years and a pandemic you guys are finally coming back to Australia. We’re looking forward to it .

Yeah, it’ll be interesting to see if things have moved up, if at all in Australia. I’m kind of intrigued, because obviously there’s not so much time difference between the places we go. Not to this degree. I’m genuinely interested to see how things are.

DJ:   Well you haven’t spent any time in COVID stuffing around, having released the two Throes albums. How much of the new material are we going to hear on this tour?

But yeah it’s just a process of events. The thing is, is that we were lucky in the sense that all the material was there. So during COVID, it wasn’t like we had to figure out a way to somehow get together without being together. The material was already there. So it was just a matter of getting the artwork together, sorting out the tracklisting. All the usual stuff. We were lucky in that respect, if you can call it luck. It’s just the way the chips fell.

DJ: We’re going to hear a lot of the new stuff on the tour, I imagine.

Yeah, I mean obviously, new is probably not the right term at this point. I mean this stuff’s old now. The Throes stuff is like five years old now. So I guess it’s current would be a better way of saying it. But yeah, so there’s going to be a raft of that stuff. In fact we’re probably going to do something resembling the same setlist as what we’ve been doing throughout Europe and the US. I’ve probably given the game away there, but I’m sure nobody really gives a shit ay ha ha.

DJ: We were actually watching the film clip for the song ‘Contagion’. I was noting in the snippets of live footage that you’ve got a lot of young blokes in the crowd alongside all the old blokes. Like I think I’m one of the old blokes.

Speak for yourself mate, ha ha.

DJ: Ha, I’ve noticed with bands that have been around for 30-40 years that you get parents bringing their kids along to shows. What’s that like for you to see that happening?

I mean, I gotta be honest. This kind of stuff sometimes leads towards demographic conversations, which are, you know, terribly trite. So I don’t really think about that. But it has to be said that, I try not to separate out what’s younger, what’s old, base things upon age range. I think that’s a bit problematic sometimes. But we do see a lot of younger kids come, but surely music is ageless and timeless, whatever it is across the board. So I think if you’ve got something that has substance, then I think it doesn’t matter what your age is.

This is a question I get asked quite a lot, and I used to kind of try and directly answer that question, but I don’t think you can. Because to me, it’s kind of the wrong question to ask. If music is ageless and timeless as we think it is to be, then it doesn’t matter. Napalm, as old as the band is now, what matters to us is that we feel that we can still offer something that is creatively challenging, that has a substance to it hopefully, that’s not just a template of other things. Hopefully people will like it. If they don’t, they don’t. I’ve got very loose attitude towards those things.

DJ: Yeah, I just sort of laugh because I was playing Napalm Death to my two and a half year old and I just looked across to him nodding his head and to see that being passed down father to son is, I thought that was cool.

This is just gonna sound terribly nerdy, but sound as a thing is transmissible to every human being, no matter what age they are, no matter what sort of grounding they didn’t have in anything they’re listening to. Sound will always translate to any ear of whatever age. If you gave him John Fogerty, he’d probably do the same thing.

napalm death australian tour 2023

DJ: Napalm Death have been touring solid for a couple years. I know here in Australia, on the back of covid, a huge underground scene has developed and I understand the same is happening in England. So I’m just wondering, since you’ve been on the road for two and a half years, is there any sort of new music that has really tickled your fancy?

If you’d have asked me an hour ago, I could have reeled off a list of stuff. Now I’m on the spot. I can’t think of anything. Yeah definitely there’s a few interesting things around. I try not to be cynical about music, I just try and let it wash over me. I mean there’s a few things that don’t interest me so much anymore. Just because I’ve been kind of overexposed, probably like a lot of people. I think death metal is one of them things. There’s not much at least, that I hear myself, that really grabs me at the moment. I mean, no doubt there’s bands out there that I haven’t heard that probably doing something interesting. But I kind of naturally listen to that stuff. I struggle with it sometimes.

DJ: I know you did work with Jello Biafra, and in like the last 10 years especially there’s a lot of punk sound in in Napalm Death.

There always was, that’s where it comes from. That’s the roots of the band. I mean, what is punk really at the end of the day? What’s the definition of it? It’s a million things to a million different people. For me personally, what my sort of perspective on punk is, Napalm has always had that. In fact it’s the dominant force oil Napalm Death. And long it continue, because that makes it interesting to me.

PS: When we were in lockdown, I had Apex Predator that I’d owned for a little while, but I had plenty of time being at home, to listen to it. And I found it surprisingly refreshing and amazing. I consider it to be one of the best albums.

Thanks man.

PS: We ran a parallel from sort of late 80s, with the conservative governments around the world to what we have now, you had Boris, Trump, those sort of people, we had a Conservative government in this country

Yeah, hell yeah, he was the one, that bloke, fuckin…(clearly not a fan)

PS: Having those parallels run from the 80s with Reagan and Thatcher to now, had that influenced you? Because we we personally feel heavy music has had a big resurgence in this country. Do you think that that is a reaction to conservative government in terms of punk and metal?

While it does give fertile ground for people that are interested in sort of addressing that side of things, lyrically, I suppose. But I mean, it’s always going to be there, even if there isn’t that particular government in a certain country where a band is based. Because you gotta remember this, and this is certainly for Napalm Death. I’ve always believed that what Napalm Death does, I can only speak for Napalm Death, on a lyrical side of things transcends politics. Because if you can’t address things as purely on a human level as human issues, then you haven’t got anything really, and that transcends politics. Because politics, a lot of times, it’s tokenism.

In fact you could say most political decisions are tokenistic. Tokenism doesn’t mean anything to human beings really. Doesn’t put food on the table. It doesn’t stop people from being oppressed, necessarily. So whatever shade of government there is, I think, if you’re referring to music like Napalm Death, the kind of ideas that we chew over,   then it’s going to be there whatever the case, because there are always human issues to find whatever the political sort of environment is.

DJ: Well it’s been a genuine honour talking to you mate but we’re out of time. We’ll be seeing you soon enough though.

See you at the gig maybe

PS: Yeah we will.

DJ: Bloody oath you will
