N.B. announces details for this summer’s travel incentive program to help tourism sector during pandemic

HALIFAX -- The Government of New Brunswick released details Thursday on how the province's Explore NB Travel Incentive Program will work this summer.

In April, the province announced the program would be reoffered again in hopes to encourage New Brunswickers to travel and discover their own province. The program was first offered in the summer of 2020 as a way for the province to support their tourism sector.

"We are happy to be able to offer this program once again to residents," said Tammy Scott-Wallace, New Brunswick's tourism, heritage, and culture minister. "It has helped support many tourism businesses across the province and has helped New Brunswickers to discover new places and hidden gems. It has truly made it possible for many people to continue to explore their province over the past year."

The program will run from May 27 to Oct. 31, offering a 20 per cent rebate on eligible expenses up to $1,000 for New Brunswickers taking a vacation that includes a paid overnight stay in the province.

The four categories of eligible expenses include:

• Accommodations such as at hotels, motels, inns, B&Bs and campsites.
• Food and drink at restaurants and food trucks.
• Activities such as entrance fees to attractions, museums, art galleries, cultural events and outdoor adventure activities.
• Travel expenses such as for vehicle rentals, ferries and parking.

"Applicants may apply for the rebate if they have valid and detailed receipts from registered New Brunswick businesses and have a paid overnight stay at a New Brunswick accommodation," wrote the province in a news release on Thursday.

Applications can be submitted from July 5 to Nov. 30.

GNB: New funding program to support festivals and events

FREDERICTON (GNB) – With summer underway, a new program is providing a financial boost to New Brunswick’s one-of-a-kind events.

The Invitation Funding Program will provide $1 million for the development of new festivals and events, or to enhance existing ones, to help attract more visitors to the province.

“New Brunswick has so many stories to tell the world through our festivals and events,” said Tourism, Heritage and Culture Minister Tammy Scott-Wallace. “This funding program will energize our tourism destinations with new offerings for residents and visitors to enjoy with friends and family.”

The program will provide successful applicants with up to $25,000 as part of the department’s strategy to enhance, develop and showcase the best of New Brunswick. Businesses, not-for-profit organizations, municipalities and First Nations may apply.

Projects must take place before March 31, 2023, to be eligible for funding. Applications will be considered until the program’s funds are exhausted.

New Funding Program To Support NB Festivals And Events

One of a kind events in New Brunswick can apply for a financial boost thanks to a new program.

The Invitation Funding Initiative was introduced in an effort to attract more visitors to the province.

Up to one million dollars will be provided for the development of new festivals and events or enhancement of existing events.

Successful applicants can receive up to $25, 000.

“New Brunswick has so many stories to tell the world through our festivals and events,” said Tourism, Heritage and Culture Minister Tammy Scott-Wallace. “This funding program will energize our tourism destinations with new offerings for residents and visitors to enjoy with friends and family.”

This is part of the tourism department’s strategy to help showcase New Brunswick’s businesses, not-for-profit organizations, municipalities and First Nations.

The province has started a new program that will pay New Brunswickers to vacation at home this summer.

The province has created the Explore NB Travel Incentive program to help stimulate tourism in New Brunswick during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The new program will allow New Brunswickers to apply for a 20 per cent rebate on eligible expenses made while taking a vacation, which includes a paid overnight stay in the province between July 15 and Sept. 30.

"This program is part of our ongoing efforts in assisting the tourism, cultural and recreational sectors to survive, recover and re-i​​​​magine their future as they go through the pandemic," said Tourism, Heritage and Culture Minister Bruce Fitch in a statement.

It has been almost two weeks since the opening of the Atlantic travel bubble between New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador.

The New Brunswick border was closed to prevent the spread of the respiratory virus in March.

In a news release, the province also said the program will benefit New Brunswick's culture and heritage sectors, as some spending in these areas will be eligible for the rebate.

The program was created by the Tourism Labour Force Adjustment Committee, which is composed of industry representatives from various sectors, including the Tourism Industry Association of New Brunswick.

"We understand the province's financial situation and we appreciate the support to the industry through this travel incentive program," said Carol Alderdice, president and CEO of the association in a statement.

"It will benefit our tourism operators and other economic sectors by encouraging New Brunswickers to travel more and spend time in their province this summer."

Will the New Brunswick cash-back incentive encourage people to book a 'staycation?'

Who qualifies.

The province has created four categories of eligible expenses in New Brunswick:

• accommodations, including hotels, motels, inns, B&Bs and campsites.
• Food and drink, such as restaurants and food trucks
• Activities, such as entrance fees to attractions, museums, art galleries, cultural events and outdoor adventure activities
• Travel, including vehicle rentals, ferries and parking

Residents may apply for the 20 per cent rebate on eligible expenses up to $1,000. To qualify, the applicant must be:

• A permanent resident of New Brunswick;
• Have valid and detailed receipts from registered New Brunswick businesses
• Have a paid overnight stay at a New Brunswick accommodation.

Applications for the Explore NB Travel Incentive Program will be available online and must be submitted between Oct.1 and Oct. 30.

New Brunswick is in the Atlantic Time zone

The Atlantic time zone (UTC/GMT -4 hours) is 4 hours behind London time and 5 hours behind European time. If you are traveling from Ontario, Quebec or Maine, don’t forget to set your watch an hour ahead!

We also participate in Daylight Savings Time, which means that on the second Sunday in March, the clock goes ahead one hour – until the first Sunday in November when the clock goes back one hour.

Sales Tax, Tips

The sales tax is called the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) and is applied at a single rate of 15% to a base of goods and services. (This percentage is made up of 5% federal tax and 10% provincial tax.)

A tip of 15-20% of the total bill (before tax) at bars and restaurants is customary. Tips are also given to tour guides, taxi drivers, and for spa treatments and haircuts.

Grants and other forms of assistance for heritage conservation are available from the federal and provincial governments as well as from not-for-profit organizations and private funders. Each program has specific eligibility requirements and is intended for different purposes.

There are several provincial programs created to preserve, revitalize, and maintain New Brunswick’s historical buildings:

The Community Cultural Places Grant (find the government website and relevant application documents here ):

• Directed at small communities or communities at risk, who wish to take advantage of their art and heritage.
• Directed at community-based initiatives to restore, renovate, and re-purpose significant heritage places.
• Could include museums, halls, lighthouses, churches, streetscapes, squares, or parks.
• The program will contribute 75% of costs, up to a maximum of $75, 000
• The program uses the framework delineated in the “Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada” to evaluate proposals, which can be found here .

The Heritage Place Conservation Grant   (find the government website and relevant application documents here ):

• For the rehabilitation of built heritage, that is, buildings and landscapes.
• Only structures owned, or in a long-term lease agreement, with a not-for-profit organization are eligible. Buildings must be registered provincial or municipal heritage places.
• Component A will contribute 75%, up to a maximum of $5,000 for conservation expertise and specialization.
• Component B will contribute 50%, up to a maximum of $50,000 for conservation-related aspects.

The Heritage Place Property Tax Abatement  (find the government website and relevant application documents here ):

• An incentive for heritage restoration for (primarily) commercial buildings.
• Eligible properties must meet certain criteria; the property must undergo a significant restoration with construction costs of at least $100,000, or 20% of the assessed value of the property (costs can include interior and exterior).
• The project must follow the guidelines referred to in paragraph 53(3)(e), see above, of the Heritage Conservation Act . The project also must adhere to the “Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada”
• Approved projects will be forgiven a “portion of the net increase in provincial and municipal property taxes resulting from the increase in the assessed value of the property for a four-year period.”

Governments often target specific industries for support, then provide grants and other types of funding for hiring, training, export development and more.

Who Is Eligible for New Brunswick Business Grants?

• 1 Incorporation . While grants do exist for sole proprietorships and partnerships, there are many more funding programs that require a business be incorporated.
• 2 In business for two (or more) years . Visit Albuquerque offering thousands of dollars’ worth of grants to boost tourism

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.  (KRQE) – For-profit businesses and non-profits can apply for thousands of dollars’ worth of grants to boost Albuquerque’s vibrancy and tourism. All told, Visit Albuquerque is preparing to offer around $500,000 in grants for 2024.

“We are excited to launch the 2024 Tourism Grant Program and provide a platform for innovative ideas that will enhance Albuquerque’s appeal as a destination,” Tania Armenta, president and CEO of Visit Albuquerque, said in a press release. “Last year’s grant cycle produced creative and meaningful projects that have been growing the tourism economy and benefiting our community. We believe that by investing in unique projects and experiences, we can showcase the diverse offerings of our city and further establish Albuquerque as a must-visit destination, and we can’t wait to see what inspiring projects are submitted for consideration this year.”

Businesses bringing new cultural programs, unique experiences, or infrastructure improvements can apply for grants. The overall goal is to stimulate the city’s growth and boost visitors.
