Background [ ]

In November 2009, Shakira announced a contest to feature unsigned bands and/or singers to be featured as an opening act for her upcoming tour. The tour was officially announced in May 2010 with dates in North America. The singer describes the tour as being "energetic" and "interactive" stating, "It's going to have themes and there'll be a lot of audience interaction. My live show will have a lot of that - a lot of dancing, a joie de vivre. I feel such freedom on stage. It's such a rush to be performing. I like to see everybody's faces on stage, to see the reaction. [...] So you'll see a lot of [my] energy... but there are also going to be other moments that I hope are artistically energetic. I want people to feel things up close," she finished. The tour began with a preview date at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec before officially commencing at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.

There have been four separate incidents of fans rushing the stage while Shakira was performing on stage. The third of these rushers fell over on her way to Shakira. Shakira has gained both criticism and praise for helping the fan up and giving her a hug before security escorted her out. The first stage rush did not end so happily however, and the man got rugby tackled on the stage by security before being escorted off. After her sold out performance at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California , Shakira gave an impromptu performance on top of a car and invited fans to join her in her dancing.

Shakira Conquers New Arenas

tour sale el sol

By Jon Pareles

  • Oct. 14, 2010

IT was just another day in New York City for Shakira, toggling between pop star and do-gooder. She spent the early morning of Sept. 23 at Rockefeller Center for a five-minute interview on “Today” to promote her new album, “Sale el Sol” (“The Sun Comes Out”). Asked how she gets her hips to move the way they do, she replied, with a giggle, “A magician doesn’t reveal the tricks.”

That’s about as much guile as Shakira would ever show. Her greatest trick — if it is one — has little to do with her famous hips, which can move every which way without special effects. But it’s far more difficult to maintain Shakira’s air of transparency, the ease with which she leaps from culture to culture, role to role and language to language, all with bubbly girlishness and, behind it, a perfectionist’s attention to detail.

“Sale el Sol” (Epic) is Shakira’s latest shift of direction. Her 2009 album, “She Wolf,” aimed for the international common denominator of electronic dance music; Shakira produced most of it with the Neptunes, a team of prolific, and familiar, hip-hop and R&B hit makers. “Sale el Sol,” with songs primarily in Spanish, drops that mainstreaming strategy in favor of instinct, whim and glimmers of what Shakira, 33, calls nostalgia. It’s full of idiosyncratic crossovers and hybrids, often tied to very specific places.

“It’s like I found myself again,” Shakira said. “You get influenced by everything you hear on the radio, or maybe by what you feel that other people’s expectations are. But then you suddenly realize that everything you need to write about is what’s inside of you — to not look outside but inside.”

Pitbull, a Cuban-American rapper who appears on the album, said: “On the last album they tried to Americanize Shakira by giving her the big producers. Not that it was necessarily a bad thing, but it’s just not her.”

Moments after her “Today” appearance, Shakira ducked into a downstairs dressing room to finish writing a speech for her next stop: a conference room at the United Nations Development Program building. She emerged wearing a sleek black pantsuit with silvery trim, and climbed into a black S.U.V. for a long crawl crosstown, which gave her ample time for an interview. After being whisked through United Nations security, she touched up her lipstick and joined the president of her native Colombia, Juan Manuel Santos, to announce the formation of Colombians From Birth, a $25 million public-private initiative to improve early-childhood education.

“The only way to overcome poverty and inequality is changing the equation in which a child that is born poor will die poor,” she said in her speech, in Spanish, with President Santos at her side. “And that equation can best be solved during the first years of life.” President Santos embraced her warmly, and praised the Shakira concert he’d attended at Madison Square Garden two nights earlier as “emocionante” — thrilling.

After the officials left the conference room, Shakira said earnestly, “My work as an artist helps me get close to people that have an enormous influence on the lives and destinies of so many, like the president of my country, so I can discuss things that are far more important than myself.”

Her day had only begun. Back in pop-star mode, Shakira would preview “Sale el Sol” for the Latin press, summing it up for sound bites as part rock, part romantic, part Latin. Then she was off to “The Late Show With David Letterman,” where she and her dancers shimmied through her new single, the distinctly Latin “Loca,” a merengue with rapping. Afterward Shakira flew to Florida to continue her arena tour: another night of glitter, hip swiveling and bilingual singalongs.

Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll has been working like that for most of her life: first in Colombia, where she emerged from the Caribbean coastal city of Barranquilla as a teenage “rockera” — she translates it as “rock chick” — and eventually as the globe-hopping star who may well be Latin America’s most famous performer. She’s a brand name; she just introduced her own fragrance, the vanilla-and-sandalwood S by Shakira. Yet she hasn’t forgotten her origins. With sweet determination she has continually mixed the local and the global. “Hips Don’t Lie,” her ubiquitous 2006 hit, included a line in Spanish — “Look, in Barranquilla we dance like this” — as the video showed dance moves from Barranquilla’s Carnaval.

But last year’s “She Wolf” came close to homogenizing Shakira. It aimed for the kind of electronic club beats that were also powering Black Eyed Peas and Lady Gaga, and at times the production ran Shakira’s distinctively tremulous voice through the dehumanizing Auto-Tune. Although the album reached the Top 10 in the United States and elsewhere, and “She Wolf” was a gold single in the United States, the album has only sold 352,000 copies here after a string of million sellers.

“Sale el Sol” follows it quickly, compared with the four-year gap between “She Wolf” and Shakira’s previous albums, “Fijáción Oral Vol. 1” and “Oral Fixation Vol. 2,” both in 2005. “I realized that the world was faster than I am, and I’ve got to catch up somehow,” she said.

While the album’s title song, the folk-rock “Sale el Sol,” calls for optimism through difficult times, songs like “Devoción,” “Antes de las Seis” (“Before 6 O’Clock”) and “Lo que Más” (“The Most”) churn with longing, regrets and loneliness. “We all go through hard moments,” Shakira said. “Whatever happened, it’s right there in the the songs.” She smiled. “I’ve decided that I’m not going to explain every song this time. It’s hard to explain a song. These songs explain me better than I can explain them.”

The music hopscotches across hemispheres, at times looking back to the music Shakira loved while growing up in Barranquilla. “Barranquilla is the cradle of Carnaval in our country,” she said. “All the stuff from the islands and from those neighbor countries, all that music got to Barranquilla.”

Shakira grew nostalgic for merengue, from the Dominican Republic, and three songs on the album, including “Loca,” are electrified merengue fusions. Referred by Pitbull — “I always try to listen to what’s hitting in the streets in different parts of the world,” he said — Shakira recorded with a Dominican producer and rapper, El Cata, in his tiny studio in a rough neighborhood of Santo Domingo.

“If I was thinking that this little studio was going to be in the world’s vision at this time, I wouldn’t believe it,” El Cata said by telephone from Santo Domingo. “She told me, ‘You have something that makes me move.’ I told her it was the percussion, and I said, ‘Those sounds that you want, I have them in my studio.’ ”

Another Latin-rap hybrid, “Gordita” (“Little Fatty,” a term of affection), pairs Shakira with René Pérez Joglar, who is the rapper Residente in the Puerto Rican alternative hip-hop group Calle 13. The beat is a Colombian cumbia with the drums pumped up, and Residente raps, in Spanish, that he liked Shakira better when — early in her career: she was chubbier, had dark hair and was a rock chick. “I told her it was a good idea to make fun of yourself,” he said by telephone from Puerto Rico, “That way the haters can’t say anything, because you already said it.”

The album includes English and Spanish versions of this summer’s worldwide hit “Waka Waka (Esto es Africa),” the official anthem of the World Cup. The song is built directly on a 1986 song by the Golden Sounds , from Cameroon. It was a hit on Colombia’s Caribbean coast, introduced there by African disc jockeys. “It was sort of tattooed to my brain, and I always wanted to do something with it,” Shakira said. “When they asked me to do something for the South African World Cup, I thought that song would be fantastic.”

Shakira wrote the lyrics to “Waka Waka” in English, but brought in a fellow songwriter to adapt them into Spanish: Jorge Drexler, the literary-minded Uruguayan who won an Oscar for Best Original Song, from “The Motorcycle Diaries.” He had also worked with her on Spanish adaptations for “She Wolf.” At times they worked day and night on honing her songs. “If what I proposed was understandable and at the same time a little wild and poetic, that was the choice,” Mr. Drexler said by telephone from Madrid. “She would go for the impact. She is like a fighter. She chooses her punch lines very, very well, and she works on that very, very hard.”

In “Waka Waka” Shakira’s English lyrics compare soccer players to soldiers on the front lines. Mr. Drexler’s Spanish version demilitarized the song; it talks about walls coming down and the game being the only justifiable battle. “Let’s use this song to talk about peace, not the war metaphor,” he recalled thinking. Shakira selected those lyrics.

“I have this gift, and I try to use it as wisely as I can, you know?” she said. “I realized the weight that I carry with a song like that one, that so many people are going to make it part of their lives. So it had better send a message that is positive, that is optimistic, that brings a healthy state of mind to people’s lives.

“There are songs that are just to dance to in a club, that don’t have a big transcendence. But there are songs that will remain in people’s hearts and people’s consciousness, sometimes forever. There are songs that have the power to feed people’s relationships and states of mind and states of spirit. I remember moments in my life that are completely linked to a certain song, so every song has a purpose. But when I’m creating a song, I do it in such a personal and intimate way that at that moment. I’m not really thinking much. I’m just letting it all out.”

The United Nations conference room was being cleared; Shakira had a busy afternoon ahead, and an assistant was signaling her to wrap things up. “I’m trying to remain genuine,” she said. “I don’t want to end up posing.”

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. Luis Miguel tour 2023: where to see him in concert

tour sale el sol

Luis Miguel fans in the Borderland might be excited to hear the Sol de Mexico has announced a tour for 2023. Only thing is, he doesn't appear to be coming to El Paso.

The Mexican crooner announced the dates for his 43-date tour on April 19. The singer's tour doesn't have El Paso on the schedule but does have other Texas cities.

This will be his first tour since "México Por Siempre," which ran from 2018 to 2019. That year, he did perform in El Paso.

His new tour will kick off Aug. 3 in Argentina, take him to Chile in late August and then come to the United States before finishing with dates in December in Mexico.

Tickets are not yet on sale. But here are the closest cities where El Paso fans might want to travel to see Luis Miguel.

Oct. 29: Dallas

Nov. 2: Houston

Nov. 4: San Antonio

Nov. 5: Austin

More: Upcoming El Paso concerts in 2023 include Ricardo Arjona, Incubus with Paris Jackson, Fuerza Regida

Luis Miguel is one of Mexico's biggest stars with 16 No. 1 songs on Billboard's Top Latin Albums list and nine leaders on the Top Latin Albums tally, according to Billboard.com. In 2017, he released "México Por Siempre!" ‒ which won album of the year at the Latin Grammy Awards.

Loyal fans have missed him on the stage but have enjoyed learning more about his life in "Luis Miguel: The Series" on Netflix.

Moscow guide&photo! Feel Putin vibes and explore the enigmatic Russian soul through history ...

The sprawling, mind-boggling metropolis of Russian Moscow has long been one of the theatrical stages on which the great dramas of Europe and Asia have been played out in grand style. Burned by Napoleon in 1812, immortalised by Tolstoy, utilised by the Bolsheviks and championed as a bastion of heroic defiance by the post-war communists, it’s almost hard to believe just how defining the historical events that found their home on Moscow’s streets have been. Moscow tour guides will easily be able to mark the major must-see landmarks on the map, from the onion-domed orthodox Saint Basil's Cathedral, to the political powerhouse of Red Square just next door, while others will be quick to recommend a ride on Moscow’s famous subterranean metro system, or a visit to the UNESCO-attested Novodevichy Convent on the city’s southern side. But Moscow is a city also in the throes of a cultural wrangling between the old and the new. Creative energies abound here: Boho bars and pumping super clubs now occupy the iconic mega structures of the old USSR; high-fashion outlets, trendy shopping malls and luxurious residential districts stand as testimony to a city that’s now the undisputed playground of the world’s super-rich, while sprawling modern art museums dominate the cultural offering of the downtown districts north of the Moskva River.
