  • Enter your preferred departure airport and travel dates into the search form above to unlock the latest The Bahamas flight deals.
  • Lynden Pindling International Airport (NAS), often known as Nassau International Airport, is the largest airport in the Bahamas. In addition, it serves as one of the main hubs for the airline Bahamasair and is the country's main international entry point.
  • If you wish to travel to the Great Exuma Island, consider flying into Exuma International Airport (GGT), the public airport serving the whole island. This airport serves as a major entry point and gateway for travelers from all over the world.
  • If you want to fly directly to the Bahamas without any stops, consider taking nonstop flights. You can board this flight from Atlanta (ATL) or Chicago (ORD), and fly with Delta, United Airlines, Frontier Airlines, or American Airlines into NAS.
  • The Bahamas’ Nassau International Airport is completely accessible, with elevators, ramps, custom-designed restrooms, and designated disability parking places. One can request a wheelchair from the airline before arrival.

  • Cat Island, Eleuthera, and San Salvador are the islands marking the eastern territory of The Bahamas. • After your flight from the US to The Bahamas, a connecting flight to Exhuma International Airport (GGT) leaves you perfectly situated to have an adventure discovering the islands of the southern Bahamas, including the Exhuma Islands, Rum Cay, Long Island and Crooked Island, while Spring Point Airport (AXP) gains entry to Acklins Island.

Top 5 airlines flying to The Bahamas

Delta is one of the best airlines I have flown

Made the Atlanta to Pittsburgh trip many times, with Delta no issues

I always fly with Delta. My friends tell me their horror stories of flying with other airlines. I just smile and say, “You should fly Delta”

I'm a larger, athletic guy (6'2", 260lbs powerlifter) and I found the seats incredibly uncomfortable with minimal leg room, especially in a window seat. Now, I full understand that being smaller may change my view but even if I was 80lbs less, my legs would be the same size and I was sandwiched between my seat and the seat in front of me.

Horrible. This was not first class. This was a connecting flight whi h was late. My original flight never came. I hated the fact that delta gave me a connecting flight from New York to Orlando Florida. No meals and the television screens were not working. There wasn't even any power to charge your phones. This is NOT FIRST CLASS DELTA!!! Do better next time!

This flight was ridiculous. I had to have a connecting flight from New York to orlando Florida??? The flight left late and because it was a short flight there was no first class amenities. I had one alcohol drink. The flight crew was fine, but it sure did not feel like first class. Delta to me dropped the ball by giving me a connecting flight. By the time we got to Raleigh we would have missed the next flight. Lucky for me the flight never came so now I was stuck waiting for a later flight that came in late also.

Our flight was delayed in Atlanta. The staff could have gave us an explanation for the delay and how long it would be.

I liked the ease of checking in, luggage check in, wheel chair assistance, boarding and flight.

On my way home I had a layover. The flight from ATL to CLT was amended 5x while I was waiting. I could have driven home sooner. Overall from Dallas, Tx to Charlotte, NC I started my trip at 4:30pm, I didn’t get home until past midnight. I know things happen, but 5x to make me run back and forth in an airport from different terminals is excessive. I also upgraded to comfort + , I didn’t feel it was worth it. There was no benefit

Great. Loved that there was WiFi on flight to keep in touch and excellent service of beverages and snacks.

Business class is great. New airplane, very comfortable, better than some of the major airlines I am used to

Terrible. Flight was cancelled due to the weather in the east and sout east(florida). Did not get any compesation of any kind. According to them, it was not under their control so I lost all the money paid for the 2 fairs from Raleigh, NC to Orlando, Fl.

great flight. Pilot was communicative, flight attendants were excellent. Really nice experience except my tv didn’t work.

Overall, the flight was better than the flight I took to go to Florida, which had a bunch of problems. The crew is really nice and the plane was new so it had a small problem when we were on the runway, but the flight itself was great. They even made some time back up, which is always a good thing.

at the time for boarding the lady just call Group A and no other goups and everybody from A to F go inside without the right turn, and when we get in theres no more spsce for carry on , the ones that get in at not correct group from the back occupy our space !!!!! a mess !!!!

There were multiple delays but JetBlue tried to make the boarding and departure process as quick and efficient as possible. The crew was as detached from reality as could be, meaning: not very friendly and just doing things by the numbers.

I had back trouble prior to my flight and everyone was great about helping me.

Jetblue needs to improve on Onboarding as it seems to always be behind on departing. It never leaves on time. I would recommend to have an earlier Onboarding in order to leave on time and respect your customers time as well.

40 minute delay before take off after boarding flight. Bright lights throughout night flight due Issues with light panels. In flight Entertainment nonfunctional

Nothing beats ANA customer service on my opinion. Maybe because of their Japanese culture (and food). Arigatō

So so. Terrible aircraft choice for that leg of the flight.

Due to one crew member not showing up to work, our flight was significantly delayed causing us to miss our connecting flight in Houston to Mississippi causing us to be delayed by more than 6 hours and missing our event all together. Very disappointing. All because ONE crew member called in sick. United did grant us a $15 meal voucher, which was a small but appreciated concession that I wasn’t able to use because I ordered my lunch and paid for it before applying the concession, and the staff said it was too late to use it. Ugh! We also had a TWO delay coming back from Mississippi, but that was on American Airlines and it was due to weather, so not their fault. Anyway, not at all impressed with United’s handling of our flight and the HUGE disappointment of missing our important family event for our 90 year old mother. All that money and all that stress and emotions for nothing. Having to wait the hour to bring an employee from LAX seemed like something that should not have happened. Why don’t you have a local back-up? Santa Ana is not a little airport in a rural area.

Flight delayed from Cape Town to Washington then got diverted to miami and in miami we had to fend for ourselves , im still trying to get to Shreveport now

delay several times and wait extra long to board. no entertainment service because there are problem for some rows. always encounter some delays for the last flight of the day.

I just wrote a text which was supposed to be for the flight from Denver to spokane not Frankfurt to Denver.

On time every leg of the journey and exceptional staff at counter, gate, and on board. I haven’t travelled in US for a long time and was genuinely surprised how pleasant this was.

Hated every minute of it. This flight should have only taken 1.5hrs but was delayed over 10hours. Now I am being told I cannot be compensated or refunded my ticket price or extra leg room, which I purchased but did not receive, because the airline is throwing the blame on the 3rd party I purchased tickets through and 3rd party putting the blame on airline. No one wants to help. They received their money and that's all they care about. Im going on 3 days of still trying to get to my final destination, had to cancel car rental, car insurance and hotel. Currently staying in airport until hotels open up. Thank you Lufthansa, Kayak, Underpricer and United for making this trip the worst ever.

The delays (5 hrs) were a comedy of errors, and the multiple safety issues encountered were very concerning.

flight delays, staff only communicating when pushed, food service lasting a grand total of 7 minutes, stuck in seat from 45mins into flight until landing

Just get Economy Plus for international flights, so worth it the extra room, bigger seats…

This flight is frequently delayed. The connections seemingly are more frequently delayed. I’ve missed connections as a result twice on the same route to charlotte then Charleston. Final destination arrival has been the next day, twice in a row. No pilots, no crew. Too many excuses. Unfortunately, my days with American are over.

Entertainment was okay not because anything was wrong but it is a short flight so having no wifi is annoying but understandable. Crew was outstanding as usual

It was spectacular. I had basic Economy and was given so much space and their seats lean back so far. Staff was superb, food was superb, everything was superb, Finnair is Fantastic.

Those seats were way too narrow. I had the middle seat, one person was a very skinny person and we still couldn’t avoid touching each other anytime one of us moved. The other person was larger and we were basically sitting in each others lap the entire flight. There was zero entertainment. The flight was long enough to justify tvs, but no. Gotta sit there in your infant seat and twiddle your thumbs.

The Flight attendant had an attitude and didn't allow anyone any time to prepare for landing despite being absent throughout the entire trip

Flight boarded without pilots. Sat on plane for 3 hrs. after over an hour late boarding. Plane never took off. Had to deplane near midnight. Line for rebooking was 3 hours + long. I had to leave.

The flight was great but board was a nightmare. The gate was changed 4 times during the layover period

The experience was great and much better than the flight going out. of course I was in first class but the service was excellent

Cold air blew constantly on my legs almost making me numb.

Going the plane was late and then Bahamas Air chartered another plane to take the passengers to San Salvador.

4 hour delay Noisy passengers Tight seats Missed connecting flight in Ft. Lauderdale

We were scheduled to travel at 12pm. The flight got delayed with no updates until 11:30am. They advised that we will receive an update at 1pm. However, the flight was then delayed until 6pm with no clear indication as to if that was the departure time. It was NOT! They decided to combine two of their scheduled flights into one due to the smaller number of passengers. If you do not wish to be inconvenienced, “STAY AWAY FROM THIS AIRLINE”!!!!!!They do have a track record of this!

Flight was delayed more than 2 hours in departure. Boarding was lengthy and passengers were very rude. I waited on the plane for almost an hour once boarded and it was very hot. The passenger next to me was clearly I’ll: coughing and sneezing the entire flight.

Very courteous staff at the gate and excellent assistance with my needs as a handicapped person on board. The flight itself was uncomfortable, with tight seating and seats they don’t recline, so be aware. The aircraft itself is old and worn, and it shook a lot and made a lot of noise, especially upon takeoff and at landing. But, hey it’s a short flight and it got me back home to Florida safely, so….

I feel that I was scammed by BahamasAir. Both on flights 202 and 207, to and from Nassau - Fort Lauderdale June 2, June 6. I paid for 2 full size bags and selected seats. On both flights they told me I had not paid for luggage or seats. I was charged $100 extra each way without seat assignment. BahamasAir does not participate in TSA Pre Check. Even if you have it you cannot use it. Instead endure long lines because BahamasAir will not pay their share of PreCheck.

Booked thru you. Paid and was supposed to have 1 checked bag and seat 3 C; with the same for my wife sitting on the opposite side of the aisle in 3D. At airport we had to pay $ 25 each for 1 bag each.. we’d were given seats inn row 17

Boarding process was smooth and easy. The crew was friendly and communicable and transparent about the delay at the landing destination.

Flight was delayed 7hours due to multiple planes having mechanical issues.

Nothing to add! I will definately use your website again. Thank you

How to get there, what islands to visit, getting around.

The Commonwealth of The Bahamas is an archipelago stretched out across 500 miles of the Atlantic Ocean. With turquoise waters , warm, salty breezes, and plenty of opportunities to mingle with fun-loving locals, it’s a well-favored Caribbean island destination — perhaps especially for those living along the eastern seaboard, which is connected to the Bahamas via abundant direct flights. Even if you are coming from farther away, this island chain is worth the journey.

“We have always been known for our beautiful beaches and weather; I'm glad that more travelers want to experience something even more valuable than that — the Bahamian people,” Kya Nguyen told Travel + Leisure. Nguyen is a local tour guide who can trace her family’s island lineage back several generations. In fact, her last name has been linked to Blackbeard’s crew.

“People also love and appreciate our nature and wildlife. Guests always remark on the curly tailed lizards, and my young pineapples are a favorite photo opp,” Nguyen added. Another sight Nguyen says to prioritize? "Junkanoo, a uniquely Bahamian street parade celebrating music, dance, and freedom. There are parades and events throughout the islands that hold a similar name — Jonkonnu in Jamaica, John Canoe in Belize. But there's only one Bahamian Junkanoo experience, and it's on Bay Street [in Nassau].”

From world-class resorts and famed spots like Pink Sand Beach to family-friendly accommodations at Atlantis on Paradise Island, every inch of the Bahamas is an inch to explore. Here’s everything you need to know to plan a trip to the Bahamas .

Top 5 Can’t Miss

  • Atlantis is one of the most popular resorts in the Bahamas and includes the 141-acre Aquaventure water park, a casino, a golf course, and more.
  • Graycliff is a five-star dining experience set in an 18th-century mansion.
  • Lucayan National Park boasts impressive wildlife and fun activities, including kayaking through its mangrove trees.
  • Check out the Anchor Bay Fish Fry, held every Friday, for deliciously fried fish and other local dishes.
  • Pink Sand Beach on Harbour Island is the perfect Instagram spot, with pink sand made from seashells and microscopic organisms called foraminifera.

Best Hotels and Resorts

Atlantis on paradise island.

Atlantis is one of the most popular resorts in the Bahamas — Prince William and Kate Middleton even spent the night here during their tour of the Caribbean. There are five different hotels on the massive property, so guests can choose the vibe that's right for them.

Baha Mar on the island of New Providence is one of the beloved (and convenient) resort options for those flying into Nassau, as it's a short drive from the airport. The 1,000-acre luxury resort is home to three different luxury hotels, plus 15 acres of private beachfront for guests to enjoy, and a new waterpark. Baha Mar also has satellite properties on other islands, including Bimini and Harbour Island.

Kamalame Cay, Bahamas

T+L readers voted Kamalame Cay one of their favorite hotels in the 2022 World’s Best Awards, likely thanks to the property's sense of solitude. One reader noted that the 96-acre resort isn’t exactly easy to get to, but relaxing in a beachfront villa without another soul in sight makes the trek worthwhile.

Best Things to Do

Hit the beach.

You will surely spend some time at the beach if you've come to the Bahamas. Luckily, all of the Bahamian islands have beautiful beaches to choose from. If we had to suggest a specific one, it would be the highly photogenic Pink Sand Beach on Harbour Island. This three-mile stretch of soft, pink sand — which gets its color from seashells and microscopic organisms called foraminifera — is a place to go for total relaxation. Bring a book, or just plan on spending your time staring at your gorgeous surroundings in total awe.

Charter a boat

Get out and experience the azure waters surrounding the Bahamas by booking a day trip on a boat, or chartering a private vessel with a captain who will happily lead you on a dive or snorkel adventure. Deep-sea fishing excursions are also available via chartered boat.

Get a day pass to Atlantis

You don't have to be an overnight guest to experience the fun that Atlantis resort has to offer. All you need to do is purchase a day pass, and you'll have access to the thrilling 141-acre Aquaventure water park , which includes pools, beaches, a rapid river, and waterslides. If that's not enough, try your luck in the casino, play a round of golf, or have a meal at one of multiple on-site restaurants.

Explore a national park

Lucayan National Park on Grand Bahama Island is another must-see spot. Here, visitors can kayak through mangroves or simply go for a stroll, spotting local flora and fauna.

Best Restaurants

For a five-star dining experience, book a table at Graycliff , an upscale restaurant set in an 18th-century mansion on West Hill Street in Nassau. Expect conch soup and lobster, plus plenty of freshly caught fish.

Anchor Bay Fish Fry

For a more low-key dining experience, head to Anchor Bay in Governor's Harbour for its beloved fish fry. The event is held every Friday and includes plates of fried fish and other local delicacies.

Travelers will have one more meal to dress up for at Dune , located at The Ocean Club, a Four Seasons Resort. With a menu by chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten, expect delicious offerings like yellowfin tartare, shrimp satay, and roasted grouper with lime chili sauce.

Peak season lasts from mid-December to mid-April, when the weather is at its most glorious. This is also when crowds descend on the islands, so you'll have to contend with higher prices and other tourists.

It never gets much colder than 60 degrees Fahrenheit in the Bahamas, so there's not really a "bad" time to visit. Do keep in mind that the Atlantic hurricane season stretches from June to November, though, which is worth considering when you're booking your trip.

The summer months are also rainy, but there will be fewer visitors and more affordable rates. Tourist numbers dip lowest in September and October, so plan a trip during these months if you want to visit the Bahamas when crowds are at their thinnest.

Plenty of travelers fly into the Caribbean — there are 20 international airports across the islands, with regularly scheduled flights from around the world. Nassau is the most connected destination, while getting to the Out Islands can be a bit more complicated (though totally worth it). Your flight to the Out Islands will probably connect via Nassau. Private charters are a popular option, too.

Cruises might be the most common way to get to the Bahamas. Most cruise lines stop in the Bahamas along their Caribbean routes , and some brands even have private islands in the archipelago, including Disney Cruise Line ( Castaway Cay ); Carnival Cruise Line ( Half Moon Cay ); Norwegian Cruise Line ( Great Stirrup Cay ); Princess Cruises (Princess Cays); MSC Cruises ( Ocean Cay — MSC Marine Reserve ); and Royal Caribbean International ( Perfect Day at CocoCay ). Virgin Voyages has a private destination on Bimini called the Beach Club at Bimini , and Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville brand has a Margaritaville at Sea cruise ship that sails from the Port of Palm Beach to Grand Bahama Island on a regular basis.

There are more than 700 islands in the Bahamas, and while visiting them all is a lofty goal, it's reasonable to see a few during one trip. “Visit one of the 30 other inhabited islands outside of Nassau," Nguyen says. "If you’ve only ever been to Nassau, you haven’t seen all the Bahamas has for you.”

Here are a few islands to consider for your itinerary.

Grand Bahama: A visit to Grand Bahama means getting to experience the archipelago's best outdoor adventures. Snorkeling and diving guides lead aquatic adventures here, and land lovers can relax on famed beaches like Lucaya Beach and Gold Rock Beach. Grand Bahama is also home to Lucayan National Park, which means there is plenty of wildlife spotting to do, too.

Harbour Island: Those looking for an enchanting and colorful experience need not look further than Harbour Island. This is where visitors will find Insta-famous, pastel-colored homes shaded by palm trees. There are gorgeous beaches here, too, Pink Sand Beach is certainly the most famous.

Exumas: Another Insta-famous destination, Exumas is where you'll find friendly pigs swimming in the sea, and they're eager for you to come and say hello. If you're sticking around on this island, dig your umbrella into the sand at Coco Plum Beach.

New Providence Island : You can't really skip New Providence, as it’s home to Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas and the most common gateway to the islands. Urban hustle and bustle meets serene island escapism in this city, and in all the right ways. Leave time to explore the museums and beaches, and spend a night on the town to feel the city's energy after dark.

Rental car: If you plan to stay on one island for a while, book a rental car so you can get around with ease. Options are abundant at the airport in Nassau, including known brands like Avis, Hertz, and Budget. See all the options here .

Taxi: Taxi services will get you from point A to point B, and rates are fixed by the government , so it's easy to estimate your fare. Ride-shares like Uber and Lyft do not operate on the island. But, if you want to schedule a ride, try the local Let’s Go Bahama app .

Intra-island flights: There are both scheduled intra-island flights and chartered flights available throughout the Bahamas. Bahamasair offers routes between Treasure Cay and Marsh Harbor in Abacos, and Nassau to Great Exuma. Other airline options for getting around the islands include Flamingo Air and Western Air. See all flight options here .

Ferry: There are several ferry and water taxi services available throughout the Bahamas to transport guests from one island to another. For example, Green Turtle Ferry services the Abaco Islands, with scheduled service between Green Turtle Cay, New Plymouth, and Treasure Cay on Great Abaco, while Bahamas Ferries offers connections between Long Island and Georgetown, Exuma, or Nassau. See all ferry options here .

More about bahamas.

The city of Nassau and the popular tourist destination of Paradise Island are the most prominent attractions on New Providence Islands. Throughout its history, the Bahamas have withstood stopovers from sea-faring pirates, Spanish conquistadors, British Loyalists, Civil War-era blockade runners, and Prohibition rumrunners. Today, the largest stopover for visitors are the million cruise-ship passengers who arrive each year. For cruise guests, the attractions awaiting at Paradise Island are a popular shore excursion.

Before You Go

  • To make it easier to replace your passport if it’s lost or stolen, in addition to your passport, take a photocopy of your passport information page (keeping it separate from your actual passport).
  • Carry only a limited amount of cash, just enough for gratuities and incidental purchases. Major credit cards are widely accepted and can be replaced if lost or stolen.
  • Always lock your hotel room door (including patio and balcony door on any level of the building) and use the peephole before opening the door.
  • Store your valuables (such as cash, credit cards and airline tickets) in the hotel’s in-room safe or front desk safety deposit box.
  • If you must carry valuables on your person, do so in a pouch or money belt concealed under your clothing. Purses and backpacks can be easy targets for thieves.

Sargassum/Seaweed Advisory

Sargassum is a free-floating seaweed that is especially prolific in the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico. While beneficial to ocean life, these large free-floating seaweed mats often wash up on beaches. The amount of seaweed on the beaches fluctuates based on the time of year and ocean currents. While resorts do their best to maintain the beaches for their guests, you may experience some inconvenience during your stay.

Top Experiences

Beaches : The beaches on Paradise Island draw visitors to their shores year-round. Other island beaches in Nassau offer a more laid-back experience.

Casinos : Explore the local gaming scene at one of the island's action-packed casinos.

Diving : The surrounding waters offer an underwater sculpture garden, the famous Lost Blue Hole, and other historic wrecks.

Downtown Nassau : Pastel buildings, historic Parliament Square, and open-air markets await visitors in downtown Nassau.

The Queen's 66 Steps : The Queen's staircase offers a direct trail from Fort Fincastle to central Nassau. This oasis draped in tropical plants, and a waterfall creates a captivating experience.

Conch fritters in the Bahamas

Should you do an organized tour or travel independently in the Bahamas?

When planning a trip to the Bahamas, there are two primary options to choose from: organized tours and independent travel. Organized tours offer a convenient and hassle-free experience, as all the details of your trip are handled by travel experts. Additionally, you'll have the benefit of an expert guide who can provide valuable insights and knowledge during your journey. This option is often favored by travelers who appreciate the convenience and ease it offers, with many tours providing transportation and expert guides to enhance the overall experience.

On the other hand, independent travel provides a different set of advantages. It offers a higher level of freedom and flexibility, allowing you to customize your itinerary and explore at your own pace. This option appeals to travelers who value the ability to make spontaneous decisions and have more control over their travel plans. The independence of traveling on your own can provide a sense of adventure and the opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture on a deeper level.

Ultimately, the choice between organized tours and independent travel depends on your personal preferences and travel style. Consider your desired level of convenience, the amount of guidance you prefer, and the level of flexibility you seek when making your decision. Both options have their own merits, and the decision should be based on what aligns best with your travel goals and preferences.

How Much Is A Trip To The Bahamas For Two?

With beautiful weather, sandy white beaches, pretty palm trees and luxurious all-inclusive resorts, a vacation in the Bahamas sounds like a great idea.

Not to mention the great food and blissful activities like swimming with dolphins and indulging in spa treatments. So you might be wondering how much a trip to the Bahamas costs.

This article gives the lowdown on what it costs to vacation in the beautiful Bahamas along with lots of useful information to help with your journey, which is sure to be totally amazing.

What is the average cost of a trip to the Bahamas?

How Much Is A Trip To The Bahamas For Two?

It is not easy to estimate the cost of an average trip to the Bahamas because it all depends on your travel style.

If you fly first class, stay in the best hotels and indulge in all the possibilities from private yacht charters to luxury spa treatments, your budget will be much higher than a budget-conscious traveler who only books trips and tours when they are on sale.

As a rough guideline, you could expect to spend around $500 for a couple and about $700 for a family of four, covering accommodation, transportation, dining, and entertainment.

The other big factor is the time of year you travel. Low season, should season and high season all come with different price tags, especially when it comes to flights and rooms.

If you have a firm budget for your vacation, the flights and accommodation are the biggest ticket items. Factor in those costs and then you can calculate how much you have for other vacation essentials such as dining, transportation, tours and shopping.

All-inclusive resorts are always great value for money with your meals taken care of. You eat most of your meals at the resort and it’s included in the cost. You might have a few meals at other places if you are away on a day trip or see a fancy restaurant you want to try.

The all-inclusive packages often include resort activities, amenities and entertainment. You can’t go wrong with an all-inclusive travel package in the Bahamas.

What is the cheapest month to go to the Bahamas?

How Much Is A Trip To The Bahamas For Two?

The low season is the time of year that you will find the best deals to the Bahamas. August to November is considered the off-season and when those on a tight budget love to scoop up the cheapest flights and room rates.

This can be a nice time of year to visit if you like avoiding crowds of tourists on the beaches and attractions. The shoulder season is from mid-April to June. During this time you can also find some good deals.

The weather is nice most days and it is not too busy. In the low season, there is plenty of sun with frequent rain and some thunderstorms. It is also hurricane season, so you need to plan well and stay safe.

The high season with the best weather is from November to April, when the weather is the nicest. The downside is you are sharing the island with many tourists during this peak time and the prices are the highest of the year.

No matter what time of year you go to the Bahamas, there are many ways to save money.

You can book accommodation near the beach but not on the beachfront, eat at cheap restaurants, look for free activities to enjoy and make the most of hotel services like free shuttles and breakfast buffets that might be included in the room price.

Are the Bahamas cheaper than the U.S.?

How Much Is A Trip To The Bahamas For Two?

The Bahamas is a pricey place to visit (and to live). But the U.S. can also be expensive depending on where you fly from and the kind of vacation you have.

When you look at all the Caribbean islands, the Bahamas is one of the most expensive. It is hard to compare the Bahamas and the U.S. because some states are much more expensive than others and it’s such a big country.

When you book all-inclusive resorts where your accommodation, food and drink is included and sometimes other services and perks, you can save a lot of money. Often the minibar is even stocked up.

Knowing what you will spend on those main expenses means the rest of your budget can be spent on transportation, tourist attractions, and shopping. With a glorious beach always nearby and near-perfect weather, you don’t need so much.

A great book and a few cocktails to take you into the sunset don’t cost much.

Is the food in the Bahamas expensive?

How Much Is A Trip To The Bahamas For Two?

If you eat like a local and not like a tourist during your trip to the Bahamas, you can get better prices for meals. If you stay in the touristy areas or eat inside the resorts, you will pay more.

In the supermarkets, you will notice food is probably a bit more expensive than back home.

How far is a flight to the Bahamas?

How Much Is A Trip To The Bahamas For Two?

If you are traveling from America to the Bahamas, the average time of a nonstop flight is about 3.5 hours or just under 1,000 miles.

One of the most popular flights is from Newark to Nassau, which takes two hours and 55 minutes. Paradise is so close and since it is such an in-demand destination, you can fly there from many airports in the States.

Do you need a passport to go to the Bahamas?

How Much Is A Trip To The Bahamas For Two?

If you are an American citizen going to the Bahamas, you will need a valid passport and proof of on-going travel after leaving the island. Some Caribbean islands don’t require a passport.

They include the U.S. Virgin Islands: St. John, St. Croix and St. Thomas. Always make sure you have at least six months on your passport before it expires from the date you are returning.

Less than that and some airlines will refuse to board you. If you need to update your passport, we recommend doing it sooner rather than later.

Passport issuing is taking a little longer these days due to Covid. As the world opens up again, everyone is rushing to travel and many are renewing their most valued travel document.

How much is rent in the Bahamas?

How Much Is A Trip To The Bahamas For Two?

If you’ve fallen in love with the Bahamas and want to stay awhile or even have dreams of living there, you might be wondering how much it costs to rent in this Caribbean paradise.

You will be happy to know it is about 10% lower than rent in America. For example, you can find a one-bedroom apartment in the capital of Nassau for about $900 per month.

There are over 25,000 Americans living in the Bahamas, so the ex-pat community is strong. They love the weather, tax benefits, beautiful beaches and laidback lifestyle.

Also, it’s easy to fly back to the States to visit friends and family, so it’s not surprising it’s a popular place for people to move to.

Is the Bahamas more expensive than Hawaii?

How Much Is A Trip To The Bahamas For Two?

These two premier destinations are often compared since they have many things in common, including glorious beaches, great food, nice weather and modern tourist infrastructure.

Those pink sand beaches you see in the Bahamas versus the tropical hula dancers. No wonder it is so hard to decide.

Price has to be a factor to consider, and when it comes to the Bahamas versus Hawaii in terms of cost, we can report it is quite similar. Both are classed as expensive places to visit.

But if you really want to see the Bahamas, you can make your budget work by prioritizing your luxuries, seeking out the best deals and not spending too much on unnecessary things like shopping.

Instead of buying a piece of artwork, take a beautiful photo yourself and frame it for your home. You still have the reminder of how gorgeous the Bahamas was in an artistic form without the hefty price tag.

Is alcohol expensive in the Bahamas?

How Much Is A Trip To The Bahamas For Two?

In contrast to food which is rather expensive in the Bahamas, alcohol is pretty cheap. Usually sold by the liter, you can get bottles of liquor for under $10. Taxes on beer and wine is higher, so costs are a bit more.

Of course, you can buy some spirits at duty-free and enjoy some drinks in your room. Just call for room service to send an ice bucket and some mixers and you are set.

You probably know the Bahamas is famous for rum, with most of the world’s rum produced in the Caribbean and Latin America.

Even if you are not a big fan of rum, you need to at least try it or maybe take a tour through The Bahamas Rum Cake Factory in downtown Nassau.

John Watling’s Distillery  is a beautiful 18th-century property that offers free rum tours and is also well worth a visit.

How old do you have to be to drink in the Bahamas?

How Much Is A Trip To The Bahamas For Two?

The legal age to buy or drink alcohol in the Bahamas is 18 years old. You can’t buy alcohol on Sundays except for inside resorts and some entertainment areas that cater mostly to tourists.

Smoking is legal for any age, but you must be 18 years or older to purchase cigarettes. To rent a car in the Bahamas, you need to be at least 21 years old.

Aquaventure at Atlantis, Paradise Island (Paradise Island) Aquaventure at Atlantis, Paradise Island (Paradise Island)

Spread across a good chunk of Paradise Island, the Atlantis, Paradise Island resort complex is home to top-notch accommodations, a casino, a golf course and multiple restaurants. But the property's most impressive features are undoubtedly its water-focused amenities. In addition to offering 11 swimming pools and 5 miles of white sand beaches, Atlantis touts a 141-acre water park called Aquaventure, where you'll find a lazy river, a Mayan-themed water playground and more than eight waterslides. The resort also boasts the world's largest open-air marine habitat filled with sharks, rays, barracudas, eels and more.

Atlantis' marine habitat and water park were a hit with previous visitors, although some caution that the property is only worth stopping at if you're staying on-site, since day passes start at $250 per adult (ages 12 and older) and $190 for children ages 4 to 11 (prices vary by season). Popular attractions at the water park include the lazy river and the 60-foot Leap of Faith waterslide. At the marine habitat, travelers enjoyed watching various aquatic animals swim by, especially at the Predator Lagoon aquarium. Meanwhile, the Dig is an imagined archeological expedition to the lost city of Atlantis that visitors can walk through.

Blue Lagoon Island Blue Lagoon Island

If you aren't up for shelling out money for a day pass to Atlantis , consider Blue Lagoon Island (also known as Salt Cay) as an option. Located just across the water from Paradise Island, about 3 miles northwest of Nassau, Blue Lagoon Island offers plenty of opportunities for rest, relaxation and fun in the sun. Upon your arrival, you'll be greeted with white sand, turquoise waters and plenty of eye-catching tropical foliage throughout, including native coconut palm trees.

While here, visitors can lounge on the relaxing shoreline of Salt Cay, doze off in a hammock under the palm trees, take a dip in the lagoon, rent water sports equipment or meet one or more of the island's animal inhabitants. You can do the latter either on an eco-nature tour or sign up to swim with dolphins, snorkel with sharks and stingrays and have an encounter with resident sea lions.

Cable Beach (Nassau) Cable Beach (Nassau) free

If you're staying in Nassau and want to explore shorelines outside of your resort, chances are you will wind up at Cable Beach. Cable Beach is not only one of the most popular beaches on New Providence Island, but it's also one of the most popular in all of the inhabited Bahamas islands. There are several reasons for this. First, it's convenient: Cable Beach is about 6 miles west of downtown Nassau and it is awash with amenities, including chairs and umbrellas, and water sports rental equipment, as well as restaurants and bars thanks to its close proximity to hotels and the bustling West Bay Street. Amenities aside, Cable Beach is also downright beautiful. The sand is white, the water is clear and turquoise, and the beach stretches for more than 2 miles, leaving a good chunk of space for you to find a spot in the sand. Plus, the water is very calm and largely absent of waves, making it an excellent option for families.

Recent visitors called the beach beautiful and relaxing, with one traveler saying it looked "like a postcard." Travelers reported spending hours just soaking up the sun on this shoreline, and many of those who chose to snorkel were delighted at the fish and manta rays they saw. Some were pleased to find that the beach itself, despite its popularity and close proximity to hotels, notably the Sandals Royal Bahamian , wasn't super crowded. However, the activity from surrounding hotels did bother some visitors. Some said that the frequent Jet Ski and boating rentals can be quite loud and that the Jet Skis specifically have a habit of getting too close to the swimming area of the shore.

Clifton Heritage National Park (Nassau) Clifton Heritage National Park (Nassau)

This Nassau national park offers an excellent blend of historical information and outdoor activities. Located on the easternmost tip of New Providence Island, Clifton Heritage National Park features beaches, snorkeling opportunities, important cultural ruins and lush walking trails. The popular Jaws Beach is part of this park, which (as you might have guessed) gets its name from the 1987 movie, "Jaws: The Revenge," which filmed some scenes here. As for snorkeling, this national park is home to coral reefs and the Sir Nicholas Nuttall Coral Reef Sculpture Garden, which features the world's largest underwater sculpture, called Ocean Atlas. Another major highlight here are the ruins left behind from previous civilizations, including a village where Lucayans (indigenous Bahamians) lived, as well as slave quarters when the site was a plantation in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Many recent visitors enjoyed their tours of the park as well as the friendly and knowledgeable guides. Those who went on the snorkeling tour were pleased with the amount of marine life they encountered and the fact that visitors can get their pictures taken while snorkeling. Others on the history tour were impressed with the guides' in-depth knowledge as well as their storytelling skills, with one traveler saying their particular guide "made the stories come alive."

Bahamas Diving & Snorkeling Bahamas Diving & Snorkeling

Beneath the surface of the Bahamas' waters lie a plethora of reefs, underwater caves and sinkholes teeming with aquatic animals, such as stingrays, sea turtles, dolphins, sharks and giant grouper. As such, it's hardly surprising that visitors flock to the Bahamas to snorkel or dive. Many local beaches, resorts and private islands have shallow areas that are ideal for snorkeling, while islands like New Providence, Grand Bahama, Andros and The Abacos feature world-renowned dive sites, such as the 6,000-foot-deep Tongue of the Ocean (between Andros and New Providence) and the James Bond Wrecks (near New Providence Island).

Many boat tours (such as ones offered by Island Time Charters and Exuma Water Sports ) include snorkeling in their itineraries. For diving, past visitors suggest signing up for excursions with companies like Stuart Cove's Dive Bahamas (on New Providence Island) and Sunn Odyssey Divers (on Grand Bahama Island). Each company offers knowledgeable and friendly guides, according to previous divers.

Popular with both tourists and locals, Junkanoo Beach sits within walking distance of the Nassau cruise port and attracts passengers who prefer walking to a beach to paying for a tour; it's also a lively weekend cookout spot for Bahamian families. College students also flock here from nearby resorts, giving the downtown Nassau strand its nickname, "Spring Break Beach."

Adjacent to the new Margaritaville Beach Resort Nassau (which opened in 2021) and attractions like the Pirates of Nassau museum and Nassau's historic Straw Market, the beach is perfect for travelers who like to have plenty of drink, dining and off-beach options to combine with a morning or afternoon by the shore: the beach is dotted with beach bars – some little more than shacks – with swing-style seats serving beer, rum drinks and other refreshments.

John Watling's Distillery (Nassau) John Watling's Distillery (Nassau) free

If you need a break from snorkeling, boating or beach lounging, consider touring New Providence Island's John Watling's Distillery. This distillery is famous for its locally distilled rum, which you can sample and see being produced during a tour. Other spirits, such as a vodka filtered with pink sand from Eleuthera, are also made on-site. The guided tour is about 15 minutes long, and after you can head to the on-site pub to enjoy a cocktail. There's also a gift shop on-site selling merchandise and bottles.

Visitors who decided to take a tour of the property certainly enjoyed their time here, making it an excellent activity for those who need a break from the sand and the sun. Many enjoyed learning the history of the distillery and found the drinks offered at the tasting and served at the bar to be delicious. Reviewers were particularly pleased with the free pina colada tasting that's offered at the start of the tour.

Lucayan National Park (Grand Bahama Island) Lucayan National Park (Grand Bahama Island)

There are three national parks on Grand Bahama Island, but this is the definitive favorite. A 40-acre spread of mangrove, palm and pine trees, Lucayan National Park also contains the impressive Gold Rock Beach (which appears in two of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies), as well as the Burial Mound Cave (where the remains of indigenous Lucayans were discovered in 1986) and Ben's Cave. Both caves are part of one of the world's longest underwater limestone cave systems.

Recent visitors enjoyed Lucayan National Park's sights, especially the beach. Many travelers were smitten with Gold Rock Beach, commenting on the clear waters, lack of crowds and overall beautiful setting. Some visitors recommended kayaking through the mangroves as another way to fully immerse yourself and enjoy the park. Meanwhile, avid divers can go diving at Ben's Cave via operators like Sunn Odyssey Divers and Calabash Eco Adventures . Dives cost $140 to $175 per person, plus the national park entrance fee.

Pig Beach (Great Exuma) Pig Beach (Great Exuma)

U.S. News Travel Insider Tip: Staying in Nassau, but still want to see some pigs? A second population of swimming pigs has been established on Rose Island – a 25-minute boat ride as opposed to the combination flight and boat excursion needed to reach Pig Beach in the Exumas. – Robert Curley

Pig Beach is easily one of the quirkiest and most unforgettable attractions in the Bahamas. This beach isn't just randomly named Pig Beach, it's actually named for the small population of pigs that call this beach home. Yes, the pigs live here, take dips in the ocean and are known to be friendly to the locals and travelers who make the trek to this uninhabited island. If you're wondering how the pigs got here, no one truly knows. They aren't native to the Bahamas and are believed to have been left behind either by a sailor or a shipwreck.

Pink Sands Beach (Harbour Island) Pink Sands Beach (Harbour Island) free

U.S. News Insider Tip: Harbour Island isn't the only place you can find a pink sand beach in the Bahamas; Eleuthera’s Surfer Beach and Lighthouse Beach also have pink-hued sand. – Robert Curley

The Bahamas is full of unique travel offerings, including feeding beach pigs and the ability to drive between two different bodies of water (Eleuthera Island sits between the Atlantic Ocean and the shallows protected by the Grand Bahama Bank). Another exceptional experience you can enjoy in the Bahamas is sinking your toes into a beach with pink sand . This Harbour Island beach with its rose-hued shoreline makes for a truly dreamy seaside landscape. The pink sand, believe it or not, comes from single-cell organisms called Foraminifera. These microscopic creatures live in various parts of the ocean and when they die, the waves carry their pinkish shells onto the shore and they become integrated with the sand, along with leftover pieces of coral.

Dean's Blue Hole (Clarence Town) Dean's Blue Hole (Clarence Town) free

A water-filled natural limestone cavern, Dean's Blue Hole plunges 663 feet below ground level on Long Island, part of a string of Bahamian islands south of Nassau and New Providence Island. Surrounded by cliffs on three sides that form a natural amphitheater, the blue hole is also fringed by a white sand beach and opens onto a shallow lagoon. It's a beautiful sight whether viewed from the beach, the water, the cliffs or on a guided dive into its cobalt depths. Some daredevils also jump from the cliffs into the blue hole.

Dean's Blue Hole is the second deepest sinkhole in the world and the deepest one filled with salt water. A habitat for a variety of fish, the sinkhole can be traversed by even novice swimmers and snorkelers, who benefit from visibility of up to approximately 100 feet and mild waves. Scuba diving and free diving into the cavern is possible with the aid of expert guides. Although the opening of the sinkhole is about 100 feet in diameter at the surface, the cavern opens to more than 300 feet as divers descend.

The Glass Window Bridge (Eleuthera) The Glass Window Bridge (Eleuthera) free

For one of the most unique views in the Bahamas, travel along Queen's Highway to The Glass Window Bridge. This strip of land and road – which connects Eleuthera's Gregory Town and Lower Bogue – measures just 30 feet wide at its narrowest point. On its northern side, you'll see the rough, deep blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean, and on the southern side, you'll get views of the calm, turquoise-green waters of the Bight of Eleuthera.

According to previous visitors, the stark contrast between The Glass Window Bridge's two sides makes for "beautiful" and "truly amazing" views. You can see both sides without leaving your car, but to make the most of your time at the bridge, many recommend getting out of your vehicle to climb up onto the rocks that surround the area. To do so safely, wear shoes with a good grip, and take your time traversing the sharp rocks. You'll also want to be mindful of passing cars.

Leon Levy Native Plant Preserve (Eleuthera) Leon Levy Native Plant Preserve (Eleuthera)

Named for Leon Levy, a Bahamian with an interest in Eleuthera's plant life, this lush oasis is filled with beautiful flora, ranging from orchids and mangroves to palm trees and cactuses, to name a few. All can be viewed from the miles of trails that weave throughout the 30-acre national park. Some of the trails include The Mangrove Boardwalk, which takes visitors through a mangrove forest that features all four mangrove species found in the Bahamas, and the Medicinal Plant Trail, a pathway that showcases plants used to treat various ailments.

Recent visitors found the nature center to be beautiful and enjoyed taking in the various flora on hikes. Others were delighted with how well maintained the grounds were, especially the informative signage, and how kind, friendly and knowledgeable the on-site staff were. Some did note that insects are present in the area and say visitors should utilize bug spray or (if weather permits) wear long sleeves and pants.

Bahamas Boat Tours Bahamas Boat Tours

Though you'll find many ways to spend your time on shore, one of the best ways to take advantage of all the Bahamas has to offer is to go on a boat tour. Chartering a boat will give you the chance to try a variety of activities, including diving and snorkeling, fishing and swimming with wild pigs . Many excursions also offer access to private islands , where you can lounge on pristine sands after savoring a picnic lunch on the beach.

Recent travelers raved about the sailing excursions offered in the Bahamas, describing their experiences as "incredible," "fantastic" and "awesome." However, a few cautioned that charter prices are steep, so plan your budget accordingly. Boat operators recommended by previous visitors include Island Time Charters and Bahama Boat Tours (for Nassau/New Providence Island) and Exuma Water Sports (for The Exumas).

U.S. News Insider Tip: Combine a visit to Graycliff with stops at the nearby John Watling's Distillery and the historic Queen's Staircase , all located "up the hill" from Bay Street and the Nassau waterfront. – Robert Curley

Built high on a Nassau hillside as a pirate's residence in 1740, Graycliff is by far the most historic hotel on New Paradise Island that also houses a fine dining restaurant, a Byzantine wine cellar stuffed with more than a quarter of a million bottles, and a variety of activities, including chocolate-making classes, cigar tastings and a local history museum.

Baha Mar (Nassau) Baha Mar (Nassau)

This 1,000-acre, billion-dollar resort complex opened in 2017 and has transformed Nassau’s Cable Beach area, adding a trio of luxury beachfront resorts, a massive casino, dozens of dining and entertainment options, an artists' commune and – most recently – a water park that rivals the scale and scope of Atlantis ' Aquaventure.

Visitors looking for an overnight stay can choose from rooms and suites at Grand Hyatt , Rosewood and SLS branded hotels, but Baha Mar also offers plenty to do and see for those visiting for the day (or evening). The Baha Mar casino is the largest in the Caribbean, a light-filled space that defies casino conventions with large windows overlooking the resort grounds and the ocean. The casino has 18 different types of table games, more than 1,000 slot machines and live sports betting.

Ardastra Gardens, Zoo and Conservation Centre (Nassau) Ardastra Gardens, Zoo and Conservation Centre (Nassau)

Flowers and flamingos are among the chief attractions of this botanical garden in the heart of Nassau. Founded by Jamaican horticulturalist Hedley Edwards in 1937, the Ardastra Gardens, Zoo and Conservation Centre is a lush oasis of tropical trees, plants and flowers as well as home to 135 animals, including the Caribbean flamingos. In addition to walking through the gardens, visitors can enjoy daily flamingo shows and presentations by zookeepers.

Past visitors say Ardastra Gardens is a fun attraction for families and nice to visit on a cloudy or rainy day when the beach isn't an option. Some visitors complained that the zoo was small and the animal enclosures seemed cramped.

Arawak Cay Arawak Cay free

A popular nightlife destination in downtown Nassau, Arawak Cay is within walking distance of the cruise port and offers a lively taste of Bahamian culture, music, food and drink. Known to locals as the "Fish Fry," the food shacks and dining establishments at Arawak Cay do indeed sell a variety of fried fish; local favorites include fried whole red snapper and conch fritters. The complex also has a stage for live music performances. Tourists are generally here every night Arawak Cay is open, whereas locals are more likely to show up on Sunday nights.

Arawak Cay isn't a natural cay, or small island: it was created with sand dredged from Nassau Harbour in 1969 and has been a popular gathering place pretty much ever since. In addition to live bands, costumed local Junkanoo troupes occasionally show up to practice their carnival-style marches and music to the delight of visitors. Kalik beer, served at nearly every restaurant in Arawak Cay, is a locally made lager that gets its name from the "click click" sounds made by Junkanoo bands.

Staniel Cay Staniel Cay free

A small island that's part of the Bahamian "Sister Islands," Staniel Cay is located in the Exumas about 75 miles south of Nassau and is best known as the location of the Thunderball Grotto , a swimmable sea cave, and the Staniel Cay Yacht Club, a popular stopover for boaters in the Bahamas.

Founded by loyalists fleeing the American colonies during the Revolutionary War against Great Britain, the small village on Staniel Cay has less than 200 year-round residents and includes a handful of businesses mostly catering to visitors, including a small number of local restaurants.

Thunderball Grotto Thunderball Grotto free

Never say never again when asked if you've been to Thunderball Grotto – this top snorkeling and scuba diving destination reached Hollywood fame for its appearance in two James Bond flicks ("Thunderball" and "Never Say Never Again"). The intricate, underwater maze located on Staniel Cay is enclosed by sky-high cave ceilings with holes just big enough to let the sun shine through and reflect off the water.

Experienced snorkelers will have no problem navigating the ins and outs of Thunderball Grotto, but many travelers recommend that novice snorkelers plan an outing during low tide. Recent snorkelers advise experienced snorkelers to avoid the crowds in the first room and instead paddle into in one of the secondary rooms.

Rose Island Rose Island

Rose Island is a popular daytrip destination for visitors to Nassau and Paradise Island who want to combine the experience of a private island beach getaway with a stay in the Bahamian capital. Just 25 minutes from Nassau/Paradise Island by boat, Rose Island has beautiful beaches, a few rough shelters and hammocks, and is mostly deserted except for the visitors who arrive daily for a few hours of sunning and snorkeling.

The most popular way to get to Rose Island is on a catamaran operated by Sandy Toes , a charter boat company located in Nassau's Potters Cay. In addition to full-day charters, the company can arrange for overnight stays at a private villa on the island. The company has also installed a population of pigs on Rose Island and runs excursions for Nassau visitors who have heard of the famous swimming pigs of the Exumas , but don't want to make the longer trip to see the original herd of hogs. A visit to the swimming pigs is included with Sandy Toes' full-day trips to Rose Island.

Queen's Staircase (Nassau) Queen's Staircase (Nassau) free

Occasionally referred to as the 66 steps (though only 65 are visible), this historic staircase spans 102 feet. It was carved out of limestone by roughly 600 enslaved people in the late 1700s as a way for the British (who colonized the Bahamas) to connect Bennet Hill's Fort Fincastle to the capital city of Nassau. The staircase took more than 16 years to complete and was named for Queen Victoria, who ruled over the region for 64 years and was responsible for abolishing slavery in the country.

Reviews from recent travelers are mixed. Some visited the stairs as part of an organized tour, and found the history of this site to be fascinating, calling the stairs and surrounding jungle-like vegetation "beautiful." However, others warn of aggressive locals at the top and bottom of the stairs soliciting visitors for tips in exchange for a tour of the area. What's more, many cautioned that the stairs can get slippery when wet, and reported seeing rats at the bottom of the stairs. All in all, reviewers say this is a quick stop, not a must-see while in the Bahamas.

11 Best Bahamas Resorts for Your Trip to Paradise

Live the island life at these bahamas resorts.

P ristine white-sand beaches, clear-blue waters and splendid sunny weather: Experience all this in the Bahamas, where you'll find some of the Caribbean's best beaches and best all-inclusive resorts . The Bahamas is also known for its close proximity to the East Coast. So while dozens of Bahamas resorts are just a quick three-hour flight from New York, they truly feel worlds away.

When you consider all the fun in the sun you'll have, planning a trip here seems like an absolute no-brainer. In fact, there are plenty of things to do in the Bahamas , be it swimming with pigs (really!) or frolicking with flamingos—or simply relaxing at one of the many scenic beaches before retiring to one of the best resorts in the Caribbean.

While a trip to the Bahamas doesn't exactly come cheap, there are some factors to consider that may help you save some money and/or stretch your dollar further. For example, if you're looking to stay in the Bahamas for cheap, consider traveling during the low season, which is August to November. During this time, hotel rates are generally cheaper—as are plane tickets—making it one of our favorite affordable family vacations . Ultimately, your biggest problem when traveling here will be choosing which Bahamas resorts to stay at! Fortunately, we've done our due diligence to help make your decision as easy-breezy as possible.

Which is the best Bahamas island to visit?

The Bahamas is home to nearly 700 islands, around 30 of which are inhabited. When deciding which Bahamas island is best for you, consider what kind of vacation you're craving. New Providence is home to Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas. It's also where you'll find a ton of variety when it comes to hotels, bars, restaurants, activities, nightlife and attractions. Since it offers so much variety, it's a great option for first-timers or those traveling with family or groups.

Beyond that, consider these A-plus vacation destinations:

  • Andros: For a more secluded stay, go with an island like Andros. Despite being the largest island in the Bahamas, it remains (mostly) untouched, making it ideal for outdoor lovers and beach bums alike.
  • Bimini: A quick 30-minute flight from Miami, Bimini offers beautiful beaches, great fishing opportunities and a thriving nightlife scene.
  • Exuma: Also known the Exumas—it's technically made up of 365 islands—this is a popular spot for day-trippers.
  • Grand Bahama Island: Like Nassau, this island attracts families.
  • Eleuthera: Come here for the pink-sand beaches and awe-inspiring natural beauty.
  • Abacos Islands: This group of islands and barrier cays is renowned for its colorful coral reefs, dive sites and abundant marine life.
  • Great Abaco: The main island, Grand Abaco has two international airports.

Regardless of which Bahamas island you choose, know that you'll need a passport to visit.

How we chose the best Bahamas resorts

Compiling the best resorts in the Bahamas was not easy, to say the least—especially with so many incredible options. We started by combing through user reviews on Tripadvisor. Most of our picks have at least four stars (it's worth noting that none are below three stars!), and most of the best Bahamas resorts had hundreds, if not thousands, of glowing reviews.

Since the Bahamas offers miles upon miles of gorgeous beaches, it was important to pick properties on or near the beach. In fact, all but one of our top picks, a boutique hotel a few minutes away from the sand, offered direct beach access.

We also looked for properties that offered added value through perks and amenities like water sports, all-inclusive drinking and dining, and free access to water parks. From family-friendly all-inclusives to incredible romantic resorts , these are the very best Bahamas resorts to visit for an incredible beach vacation .

Best overall

Atlantis paradise island.

A seemingly endless amount of shopping and dining venues, an incredible on-site water park, 14 pools, five miles of beautiful beaches and fascinating marine exhibits—find all this (and so much more!) at Atlantis Paradise Island, which has long been considered one of the best Bahamas resorts. Think that's impressive? Consider that the massive Atlantis resort Bahamas is actually home to five distinct hotels under the Atlantis umbrella: The Royal (the brand's signature tower), The Cove (luxury suites), The Reef (residential-style accommodations), The Coral (perfect for families) and the Harborside Resort (which boasts spacious waterside villas).

Best of all, every Atlantis guest gains access to all these amenities, regardless of which property they're staying at. While Atlantis is not all-inclusive, the amenities and activities—most of which are free—here are seriously impressive. Consider Atlantis for your next warm-weather family getaway , and you (and everyone in your group) will be glad.

  • Includes an array of exciting amenities, from marine exhibits to a water park
  • With 21 restaurants and 19 bars and lounges, you'll never get bored of the food here
  • Can get pretty crowded at peak times, like during school breaks and summer
  • Food and drink are not included, and the cost certainly adds up

Best for families

Grand hyatt baha mar.

The Grand Hyatt Baha Mar is one of several Bahamas resorts that make up the Baha Mar complex on the island of Nassau. Here, you'll find over 45 dining options ranging from casual fare to indulgent fine-dining venues to decadent sweets shops.

  • Family-friendly beach resort with an abundance of activities, like kayaking and paddleboarding
  • All rooms have at least 380 square feet, though most have more
  • The property charges a nightly $65 resort fee (plus taxes), an added expense even though it comes with perks

Best for couples

Best for luxury

Rosewood baha mar.

Located within the Baha Mar complex, the Rosewood Baha Mar is among the best Bahamas luxury resorts , making it the perfect place for a weekend getaway . Moreover, as one of the best Nassau Bahamas resorts, this property is renowned for its oceanfront locale and sophisticated rooms, suites and villas, all of which are outfitted with private balconies, gorgeous Bahamian artwork, soaking tubs and plush linens.

Treat yourself to a relaxing spa service in between dips in one of the sparkling swimming pools surrounded by lush flora. When it comes time to dine, head to one of the on-site eateries, including the tony Café Boulud or the beachfront Tingum on the Sand. Golf enthusiasts will appreciate the Jack Nicklaus–designed course, while those traveling with children will love the kids club. Other on-site activities include water sports, miniature golf, tennis, painting and—get this—flamingo yoga.

It's also worth noting that guests here can access the Baha Mar Resort pools, beaches and water park. Tip: The best time to book a stay at this luxury hotel would be during the shoulder season (mid-April to June), when rates tend to dip, as do the crowds.

  • Swanky rooms, suites and villas equipped with luxury amenities
  • Prime location along a white-sand beach
  • World-class wellness offerings and golfing
  • With rates over $1,000 per night, a stay here is a definite splurge

Best for a girls getaway

Sls baha mar.

If you and your friends are in need of a fun, warm-weather getaway, SLS Baha Mar is your best bet. This Nassau, Bahamas, resort is among the island's most sleek, with its design-forward rooms (many of which overlook the unspoiled beach), chic spa , sparkling swimming pools and a handful of swanky eateries that'll impress any foodie (options range from Mediterranean and Italian to Japanese). Spring for a cabana by the pool, where you and your closest girlfriends can spend the day sipping cocktails in style.

Come afternoon and evening, your group can make its way to one of the property's four bars and lounges—don't miss Skybar, where you and your BFFs can listen to live music while snapping selfies against the sunset and panoramic ocean vistas. In addition to the aforementioned Baha Mar amenities, guests can enjoy the Baha Bay Beach Club (complete with two infinity pools overlooking the ocean) and a dazzling casino complete with floor-to-ceiling windows (the perfect place to play post-dinner).

  • Fun, hip and trend-forward ambiance
  • Handsome accommodations, interiors and public spaces
  • The lively atmosphere may not be ideal for those seeking a secluded, tranquil escape

Best boutique hotel

Graycliff hotel & restaurant.

Unlike most resorts in the Bahamas, Graycliff Hotel & Restaurant has an intimate vibe, thanks to its small size. Housed in an 18th-century colonial mansion, this 16-room boutique hotel exudes cool. The elegant accommodations feature timeless touches, like four-poster beds and antique furnishings and decor; some even offer separate sitting and dining areas and/or balconies.

The property also boasts two tranquil swimming pools flanked by greenery and gardens, a gourmet restaurant and the world's third-largest wine cellar, with more than 250,000(!) bottles. There's also an on-site cigar factory, chocolatier and winery (aptly called Bahama Barrels). While the property is not directly on the beach, it's situated in the heart of downtown Nassau, which is chock-full of eye-catching architecture, unique shops and authentic eats. History buffs can wander through the Heritage Museum (located right across the street), while thrill-seekers can sign up for a ghost tour.

  • Despite its small size, Graycliff offers a handful of unique on-site amenities and facilities like a cigar factory and chocolatier
  • Distinctively designed rooms and suites housed in a historic mansion
  • It's not on the beach, a must for many travelers' island vacations (that said, we wouldn't blame you if you just wanted to post up by one of the two pristine pools)

Pink Sands Resort

Pink Sands Resort is located on Harbour Island, which offers a (much) more laid-back feel than bustling Nassau. Perhaps the resort's most spectacular feature is the three-mile stretch of pink-sand beach it occupies (hence its name), making it one of the most beautiful Bahamas resorts. The spacious accommodations—a mix of exquisitely designed, beachy-chic cottages, villas and homes—are especially ideal for those traveling in large groups with friends or family. (Tip: Book one of the villas or homes with a private pool for the ultimate splurge.)

Meanwhile, the resort grounds are just as stunning as the beach, with an abundance of colorful bougainvillea, fragrant hibiscus, towering banyan trees and blossoming fruit trees. While we wouldn't blame you if you simply stayed put on the property throughout the duration of your trip, you can also book off-property excursions (for an additional cost), such as private boat charters, sunset cruises, snorkeling trips and more.

  • Located along a serene stretch of pink-sand shoreline
  • The tranquil atmosphere is perfect for those seeking R&R
  • Spacious and stylish accommodations
  • Only two restaurants
  • There aren't a ton of on-site activities; most guests opt to relax by the pool or beach

Best for seclusion

Kamalame cay.

Narrowing down the best Bahamas resorts is no easy feat, but Kamalame Cay is certainly up there. This private island resort, which spans 97 acres of lush jungle, coconut palm groves and virtually untouched beaches, is well worth a spot on your travel bucket list . It's an especially popular pick for those seeking solitude and serenity: Despite the property's expansive size, it has just 22 accommodations (a combination of beach bungalows, villas, cottages and suites), which adds an extra sense of privacy because guests feel like they have the resort to themselves.

Among Kamalame Cay's many highlights is its overwater spa—which just so happens to be the only one in the Bahamas. Given the property's proximity to the world's third-largest barrier reef, it's no surprise that snorkeling, diving and fishing are all popular activities here (and you can book them for an additional cost). Finally, guests can choose from all-inclusive or a la carte rates, depending on their individual needs and preferences.

  • Pristine private island resort with unspoiled surroundings
  • Home to the Bahamas's only overwater spa
  • Choose between all-inclusive or a la carte rates
  • The island is accessible only by fights into Andros Islands; otherwise, to get here directly, you'll need to take a helicopter or seaplane

Best adults-only option

Hotel riu palace paradise island.

Hotel Riu Palace Paradise Island is one of several adults-only all-inclusive resorts in the Bahamas. The standard rooms here are junior suites equipped with dark wood furnishings, comfy beds, dark red accents and a balcony or terrace where guests can soak up the sea views. The beachfront resort has two swimming pools (including one with a swim-up bar), direct beach access and plenty of hammocks for lounging in the sun (just don't forget to pack sunscreen )!

With a seemingly endless amount of entertainment offerings—think: windsurfing, scuba diving, kayaking and beach volleyball—it's pretty much impossible to be bored here. Eventually, you're bound to work up an appetite, and when hunger strikes, you can check out one of several eateries, including a steakhouse, a Japanese restaurant and scrumptious breakfast and lunch buffets. U.S. tourist faces 12 years in prison after taking ammunition to Turks and Caicos

An Oklahoma man faces up to 12 years in prison on a Caribbean island after customs officials found ammunition in his luggage.

Ryan Watson traveled to Turks and Caicos with his wife, Valerie, to celebrate his 40th birthday on April 7. They went with two friends who had also turned 40.

The vacation came to an abrupt end when airport staff members found a zip-close bag containing bullets in the couple's carry-on luggage. Watson said it was hunting ammunition he had accidentally brought with him — but under a strict law in Turks and Caicos, a court may still impose a mandatory 12-year sentence.

"They were hunting ammunition rounds that I use for whitetail deer," Watson told NBC Boston in an interview conducted last week that aired after their first court appearance Tuesday.

"I recognized them, and I thought, 'Oh, man, what a bonehead mistake that I had no idea that those were in there,'" he said.

The couple were arrested and charged with possession of ammunition. Authorities seized their passports and explained the penalties they faced.

Valerie Watson said in the interview: "When I heard that, I immediately was terrified, because I was like we can't both be in prison for 12 years. We have kids at home, and this is such an innocent mistake."

The charges against her were dropped, and she returned home to Oklahoma City on Tuesday after the court hearing to be reunited with her two young children.

"Our goal is to get Ryan home, because we can’t be a family without Dad," she said.

The couple also spoke about the financial burden of a much longer-than-planned trip. "This is something that we may never recover from," Ryan Watson said.

The U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas issued a warning to travelers in September about a law that strongly prohibits possession of firearms or ammunition in Turks and Caicos, an overseas British territory southeast of the Bahamas that is a popular vacation spot.

It said: "We wish to remind all travelers that declaring a weapon in your luggage with an airline carrier does not grant permission to bring the weapon into TCI [Turks and Caicos Islands] and will result in your arrest."

The embassy added: "If you bring a firearm or ammunition into TCI, we will not be able to secure your release from custody."

The embassy and the government in Turks and Caicos did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The same thing happened to another American, Bryan Hagerich, of Pennsylvania, who was arrested after ammunition was found in his luggage before he tried to board a flight out of Turks and Caicos in February. He said he accidentally left it in his bag.

Hagerich was on a family vacation with his wife and two young children but has now been in the country for 70 days. He spent eight days in prison before he posted bail.

"It’s incredibly scary. You know, you just don’t know what the next day may bring — you know, what path this may take," Hagerich told NBC Boston.

"You know, it’s certainly a lot different than packing your bags and going away with your family for a few days. It’s been the worst 70 days of my life," he said.

Hagerich, once a professional baseball player, was drafted by the Florida Marlins in the MLB 2007 June amateur draft from the University of Delaware.

His case goes to trial May 3.

Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry Share Lead Through 36 Holes at Zurich Classic

McIlroy is playing this event for the first time, and the two-man team from Ireland is in a great spot at the event's halfway point.

  • Author: Jeff Ritter

Rory McIlroy might make his first trip to the Zurich Classic a memorable one.

He's playing with his buddy and fellow Irishman Shane Lowry this week in the PGA Tour's annual two-man team event, and the duo shot a 2-under 70 in Friday's alternate shot, good enough to move to 13 under for the event and into a four-way tie for the lead at the halfway point. Lowy-McIlroy made two bogeys and four birdies, including a birdie 4 on two of TPC Louisiana's par 5s.

"Shane has got a wonderful short game, and it gives me confidence going for those greens whether it be the par-4s or the par-5s that if I get it anywhere up there around the green, I'm going to have a very good look for birdie after he hits his," McIlroy said.

The Irishmen turned a solid round into a very good one with birdies on 7 and 8, their 16th and 17th holes of the day. After McIlroy's big drive on the par-4 8th found a greenside bunker, Lowry hit a nice blast out of the sand to set up an up-down-birdie.

Three teams share the lead with McIlroy and Lowry: Aaron Rai-David Lipsky, Andrew Novak-Davis Thompson and Ryan Brehm-Mark Hubbard.

Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay, who won this event in 2022, are part of a six-team pack one shot behind the leaders. Defending champs Nick Hardy and Davis Riley made the cut on the number and trail by five.

But for now the focus remains on McIlroy and Lowry. When asked if the friends might venture out to have some fun in New Orleans at some point this week, Lowry, who is playing this event for the fourth time, quickly shot it down.

"No, no, no. We're here to play a golf tournament. We'll enjoy ourselves. We'll go for a nice dinner tonight," Lowry said.

"I'll do the same thing I do when I have an afternoon off. I'll go back to the hotel, freshen up, and go for a little stroll around the city and have a look at—just look around. That's what I do."

US tourists face 12 years in prison for accidentally bringing ammo to Caribbean island

The u.s. state department is warning travelers about strict new laws in turks and caicos islands that carry a mandatory minimum sentence of 12 years for bringing guns or ammunition to the island: "if you bring a firearm or ammunition into tci, even inadvertently, we will not be able to secure your release from custody", by leslie gaydos • published april 23, 2024 • updated on april 25, 2024 at 8:56 pm.

An Oklahoma woman was reunited Tuesday with her young children after being detained for almost two weeks in Turks and Caicos Islands for allegedly violating their strict guns and ammunition law. Her husband is being held in the British Overseas Territory near the Bahamas.

Ryan and Valerie Watson, who live in Oklahoma, left for Turks and Caicos Islands on April 7 to celebrate the 40th birthdays of Ryan and two friends. When they went through security for their return flight, their carry-on was flagged and searched and officials found a Ziploc bag of bullets.

"They were hunting ammunition rounds that I use for whitetail deer," said Ryan, "and I recognized them and I thought, oh man, what a bonehead mistake that I had no idea that those were in there."

The two shared their story virtually with NBC10 Boston last week before their first court hearing. They were stuck on the island, their passports confiscated, separated from their young son and daughter.

"When I heard that, I immediately was terrified because I was like, we can't both be in prison for 12 years. We have kids at home. And this is such an innocent mistake that we didn't even know we weren't– we didn't even know it was there. So yeah, my immediate thought was our kids and them being, you know, parentless for, for that long," Valerie said.

The Watsons were questioned and charged with possession of ammunition. In 2022, Turks and Caicos passed an amendment with stiffer penalties for possession of weapons or ammunition, increasing the mandatory minimum prison sentence to 12 years.

Financial literacy: What you need to know about common financial questions

Last September, the U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas issued a travel alert warning Americans after a tourist from Indiana got an eight-month prison sentence for possession of ammunition.

The alert says: "We wish to remind all travelers that declaring a weapon in your luggage with an airline carrier does not grant permission to bring the weapon into TCI [Turks and Caicos Islands] and will result in your arrest.

"We strongly encourage you to carefully check your luggage for stray ammunition or forgotten weapons before departing for TCI. If you bring a firearm or ammunition into TCI, we will not be able to secure your release from custody. You are subject to TCI laws and must follow local law enforcement procedures," the alert continued.

Bryan Hagerich was detained by Turks and Caicos authorities after a family vacation in February when hunting ammunition was found in his luggage before he boarded a flight home. He said the ammunition was found in a bag he frequently used for weekend hunting trips.

"I've been here for almost 70 days now after posting bail. I've been out, right now just waiting to go to the hearing. That's where my case would be heard, then following that would be sentencing," Hagerich said.

Hagerich, who played baseball professionally and was once drafted by the Florida Marlins, lives in Pennsylvania with his wife and two young kids. He spent eight days in prison before posting bail and is awaiting a May 3 court hearing.

"It's incredibly scary. You know, you just don't know what the next day may bring. You know, what path this may take. You know, you're in a completely different culture, a different country by yourself. You know, it's certainly a lot different than packing your bags and going away with your family for a few days. It's been the worst 70 days of my life," Hagerich said.

He and the Watsons are also dealing with the financial strain of paying for an extended stay and being away from their jobs.

Ryan and Valerie Watson in Turks and Caicos Islands

"We've already talked, and we're like, what if, you know, what if we lose our house? Which, when we moved to Oklahoma, we built a home that we thought was our forever home. And to think that this is going to ruin us..." said an emotional Valerie.

"This is something that we may never recover from," Ryan said.

"I'm just very anxious, eager to get home to my family," said Hagerich. "This has been too long. You know, it's just had so much irreparable harm to my family, that, you know, I just can't continue to see them struggle anymore. I just want to hug my family and start this healing process together."

Bryan Hagerich and his family

After their hearing yesterday, Ryan was sent to jail; he was granted bail at a hearing on Wednesday. Charges were dropped for Valerie on Monday and she is now back in Oklahoma with her two children.

The judges in Turks and Caicos Islands are able to make exceptions to the mandatory minimum sentence if they determine there are "exceptional circumstances" in a case.

NBC10 Boston reached out to the U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands' tourism bureau about the Watsons' situation and have not heard back. We contacted the State Department and a spokesperson told NBC10 Boston they are aware of the arrest of U.S. citizens in Turks and Caicos and that, "The U.S. Department of State and our embassies and consulates abroad have no greater priority than the safety and security of U.S. citizens overseas."

The spokesperson added, "When a U.S. citizen is arrested overseas, we stand ready to provide all appropriate consular assistance. In a foreign country, U.S. citizens are subject to that country's laws, even if they differ from those in the United States… As our security alert from September 22, 2023 states, in the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI), firearms, ammunition, and other weapons are not permitted. TCI authorities strictly enforce all firearms related laws. The penalty for traveling to TCI with a firearm, ammunition, or other weapon is a minimum custodial sentence of twelve (12) years. If a traveler brings a firearm or ammunition into TCI, the U.S. Department of State will not be able to secure their release from custody. Travelers are subject to TCI laws and must follow local law enforcement procedures."

The State Department said they are unable to provide the number of U.S. citizens charged with weapon/ammunition possession since the department is unable to track local arrests.

But law enforcement officials in Turks and Caicos Islands acknowledged Wednesday in a statement that three Americans are out on bail in such cases.

"The Firearms Ordinance applies to all persons present within the Turks and Caicos Islands regardless of status or origin," read the statement from the offices of the attorney general and the director of public prosecution.

pic.twitter.com/Kz31Ng5wJk — TCIG Communications Directorate (@TCIG_Press) April 24, 2024

Also Wednesday, the U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas issued a new statement urging all travelers to take care looking for weapons or ammunition when leaving the U.S.

" Carefully check your luggage for stray ammunition or forgotten weapons before departing from the United States ," the warning says in bold, going on to note that enforcement in Turks and Caicos Islands is strict, legally declared weapons aren't allowed in the territory and TSA screening may not turn up ammunition in baggage on the way out of the country.

" If you bring a firearm or ammunition into TCI, even inadvertently, we will not be able to secure your release from custody. You are subject to TCI laws and must follow local law enforcement procedures," the statement said.
