The quaint town of Kanday is the perfect starting point for your Karakoram adventure with a trek to Mingulo Broq a must-do if you want to see as much of this region’s outstanding natural beauty as possible. Thankfully, this route isn’t a tough one (apart from the occasional steep parts) and you’ll have plenty of energy to admire the forest scenery along the way.

This route will take you through some notable features, including the picturesque Hushe River, a narrow valley boarded by alpine flora and across a few bridges (one wooden bridge and two suspension bridges) to reach your Mingulo Broq campsite. But the otherworldly scenery doesn’t stop once you’ve arrived.

You’ll spend the night near the water – an idyllic spot surrounded by willow trees next to a rolling pasture where you’ll likely get the chance to meet local shepherds. Pro tip: stay up late enough to watch the stars come out and dance across the night sky. From various constellations to the milky way, you’ll spot ‘em all in Pakistan.

3.      Mingulo Broq to Nangma Valley

Difficulty: Easy-medium

Distance: 4km

Duration: 3 hours

Unlike the first trek on this list, not every route in the mountainous Karakoram region is tough. Plenty of magnificent scenery awaits you on a 3-hour journey from Mingulo Broq to Nangma Valley, where you’ll pass through lush green fields and walk beside a glacial stream (and across another) for part of the way.

The good news is that this trek is relatively flat and only 4 kilometres long, so it’s perfect if your legs need a ‘rest’ day. And once at your campsite in the Nangma Valley, there’s enough time to marvel at your surroundings (read: gazing at the extraordinarily sharp peak of Shingu Charpa’s north ridge).

For a bonus, try hiking in the spring and gaze in awe as the Nangma Valley comes to life with thousands of blooming flowers in every colour imaginable. It’ll be hard to believe you’re looking at a natural landscape and not at an impressionist painting but to set your sights on this phenomenon is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Trust us.

4.      Fairy Meadows & Nanga Parbat Base Camp trek

Distance: 10+km (all up)

Duration: 2 days (with a stay overnight in Fairy Meadows)

Fairy Meadows looks exactly the way it sounds – a lush, green oasis fit for a kingdom of magical creatures – so it’s little wonder why this scenic spot made it onto the list of the best hiking trails in Pakistan. Declared a national park in 1995, this whimsical site boasts uninterrupted views of the impressive Nanga Parbat (the 9th highest mountain in the world) and acts as the gateway if you want to hike to the mountain’s base camp.

But before you head off, it’s worth checking out your reflection (and that of the massive mountain behind you) in the town’s “Reflection Lake”. While not big in size, the lake perfectly encapsulates the beauty of the surrounding region and you’ll leave this natural wonder with a million photos on your iPhone’s camera roll and Christina Aguilera’s rendition of the iconic 1998 song ‘Reflection’ ringing in your ears.

Once you’ve had your fantastical fill, you can begin your journey to Nanga Parbat base camp (passing Beyal camp on your way) where a rocky landscape awaits. Yes, the trek from Fairy Meadows to the base camp is difficult, but it’s well worth the aching limbs and sore feet to look upon the beauty of the route’s glacial scenery.

5.      Trail 3, Margalla Hills

Distance: 2km

Duration: 45 minutes-1 hour  

While the Karakoram mountains are known for their many trekking trails, your feet-first adventure can actually start in the central city of Islamabad. With the Himalayas as the backdrop, head off on an easy hike into the Margalla Hills National Park, away from the frenetic pace of Pakistan’s capital city.  

The hikes themselves may be easy, but the same can’t be said for remembering the trail names – the park is full of trails unoriginally titled Trail 1, Trail 2 etc. But, if you can get past that, you’ll soon leave behind the honking horns and speeding cars in favour of bird calls and crunching twigs on the park’s most popular trail, Trail 3.

This trail is short but sweet steep so you’ll need to properly warm up your calves before setting off, but the 30-45 minutes of elevation gain will be worth it for the magnificent views of the city at the trail’s end. If you’ve got a taste for the trails and completing one isn’t enough, you can always try more. All the trails within the park crisscross each other so head back down, pick another one and off you go.

Things to Know about Pakistan

March – October

The weather in Pakistan can be highly variable depending on the season, geographic location, and altitude. We will be traversing through a number of different climatic zones so it is a good idea to know what to expect at each point.

*Note that our spring tours are always colder than our fall tours, especially at altitude.

Islamabad – Typically hot and humid with the potential for rain events. Average temperatures in April: High: 30°C / 87° F Low: 16°C / 61° F. / October: High: 30.5/87° F Low: 15°/59° F.

Lahore – Average temperatures in April: High: 33°C / 92° F Low: 16°C / /69° F. / October: High: 32.2/90° F Low: 19.4°/67° F.

Karimabad – Warm to cool during the day, but not humid. Colder in the spring. and potential for cloud and wind. Cooler to cold at night. Average temperatures in April: High: 15.5°C /60° F Low: 5.4°C /F /October: High: 17.5/63.5° F Low: 5°C/41° F.

Skardu – Warm to hot during the day, but not humid. Dusty, especially along the main bazaar road. Cooler and pleasant at night. Potential for wind and dust storms. July is the warmest month in Skardu. High: 23°C / 73.4° F Low: 10°C / 50° F. The sun is stronger in the mountains so temps. feel hotter than they actually are.

3,000 – 3,500 Meters – Hot, dusty, exposed during the day. Cooler at night, but not freezing typically. Potential for snow around 3500 meters, but very unlikely. Possible cloud cover developing at any elevation.

3,500 – 4,500 Meters – Daily temperatures remain warm, though mornings and evenings are cooler. Above 4000 meters temperatures can easily drop below freezing at night and in the early morning. Rain, snow, cloud cover are all possible at any time

4,500 – 5,350 Meters – Freezing temperatures at night and cool to cold temperatures during the day with periods of warm sunshine possible. Rain, snow, cloud cover are all possible at any time. Evenings at the high camps will be cold. Moses Peak can experience freezing temperatures even during the day. The coldest possible temperatures to expect hover around -10° C / 14° F. Those are extreme estimates and certainly are not the norm for this time of year.

We offer a variety of unique and comfortable accommodation options on our trips. From hotels and homestays to eco-cottages and rustic shared tents; we do our best to make sure where we sleep is part of the overall tour experience.

Here is a brief rundown of the different types of accommodation you can expect while on an adventure tour in Pakistan:

Islamabad – Nice hotel not far from the Faisal Mosque. Hot water, wifi, and an excellent buffet breakfast.

Aliabad/Mountain Story Lodge – Very cool eco-resort (the first of its kind in Pakistan). Private cottages (2 to a room). Wifi, hot water, great meals, and excellent views.

Ghulkin Village – Homestay. Hot water. No wifi/cell signal. Shared accommodation in a traditional Hunza-style communal room. Camping in tents is possible for those who snore. The best food of the trip!

Trekking – Shared, high-quality tents (2 per tent) provided by Epic. 

Fairy Meadows –  Beautiful, but basic wooden cabins with wood burning stoves. Hot water possible. No wifi/cell signal.

There are several major networks in Pakistan: Zong, Telenor, and SCOM. SCOM seems to work the best in Gilgit-Baltistan (and does not work at all in Punjab). Foreigners can obtain SIM cards in Pakistan but the procedure is slightly complicated.

In our opinion, it’s not worth getting a SIM card as our hotels in Islamabad and some places in Hunza should have wifi. The wifi in Hunza however comes and goes sporadically as when it is around, it is slower than molasses.

SIM cards cost about 2000 PK rupees with a data plan.

All foreigners need to obtain SIM cards from the various company’s main offices. You will need your passport, visa, and to give your fingerprints in order to get a SIM. Keep in mind that this trip is a chance for our guests to unplug and fully embrace a proper digital detox.

The internet situation in Pakistan is spotty at best, so please have realistic expectations regarding wifi and internet speeds/access.

Pakistan’s country dialing code is +92. It’s timezone is GMT+5 ( check the current time there now ).

Despite its poor reputation for safety in the Western media, Pakistan is a very safe place for foreign tourists to visit. Pakistani people are among the most welcoming people we have encountered in our years of travel. The odds of being a victim of any sort of crime or act of aggression are relatively low. 

Regardless, EBT vets its local partners and hotels thoroughly to ensure that all points of contact are as secure as possible. Since our first-ever organized adventure tour in Pakistan in 2016, we have built up an extensive network of trusted resources.

Our experienced team of guides provides support on challenging treks and prioritizes group safety, hazard awareness, and accident prevention as our standard operating procedure. In case of emergency, EBT trip leaders are equipped with a satellite communication device, which can contact outside emergency first responders from any place in Pakistan.

Being a part of an adventure or trekking tour in Pakistan requires a lot of energy output each day and a big part of our job is keeping everybody well-nourished, happy, and energized.

Here’s what you can expect from daily meals:

Breakfast – Typically includes omelet/fried eggs, fried Pakistani bread (paratha), jam, butter, and chai/coffee. Sometimes we have a delicious hot porridge as well. Want to win the heart of your guide? Bring a pound of your favorite coffee from your country to share with the group.

Let your guide know if you are able/keen to bring some coffee 🙂

Lunch – We typically provide a hearty lunch. Usually a mix of daal, mixed vegetables, a meat dish, salad, chapati, rice, etc.

Dinner –  Is always the main event of the day and will be a mix of vegetables, rice, noodle dishes, daal, meat (mutton or chicken), chapati, and local specialties depending on where we are.

Technically, alcohol is illegal in Pakistan. In 99.9% of the country, alcohol is not available or sold anywhere. However, for non-muslims and foreigners especially it is legal to buy and drink alcohol.  Your EBT guide can advise you on the proper way to import and consume alcohol in Pakistan if needed.

All individuals who intend to travel to Pakistan trip MUST apply for a Pakistani tourist visa or a trekking and mountaineering visa, depending on the trip you are doing. Nowadays, most nationalities can apply for a visa under the new Evisa scheme.

Epic Backpacker Tours will issue every guest a Letter of Invitation (LOI) to Pakistan and other supporting documents (Pakistani guide licenses, accommodation reservation documents, NIC numbers (Pakistani tax id #), etc needed to apply for the visa.

The Evisa process is much quicker than applying directly at a Pakistani consulate/embassy. However, you can still apply at an embassy if need be.

Once all the required paperwork is submitted online, the Evisa is typically granted within 1 – 6 weeks depending on the type of visa being applied for. Our Discover the Hunza Valley and Trekking Amongst Giants tours require only a Pakistani standard tourist visa. Visiting K2 Base Camp will require a Trekking and Mountaineering sub-visa though, which usually takes more time to process.

We recommend to all clients to apply for their Pakistani visas around 3 months in advance. 

The official currency of Pakistan is the Pakistani rupee. It usually fluctuates around 200-250 to the USD but has in recent years weakened considerably ( check the current exchange rate here ).

ATMs are common in Islamabad and Lahore but less common (or nonexistent) once we head to Gilgit-Baltistan. We have experienced issues finding working ATMs once we leave the cities and we recommend that you change/withdraw your money before we head up into the mountains.

We also recommend that instead of relying on your ATM card, bring foreign cash and change it at the airport or in the city (if the money changer is open at the airport). USD, Euro, and British Pounds are all fine. Make sure to bring notes that are free from any defects. The money changers like PERFECT bank notes. 

Pakistan is a cash-based economy and you will not be able to use your debit/credit card to purchase things.

The following plug types can be found in Pakistan: 

• Type A/B (commonly found in North America)
• Type C (commonly found in Europe & South America)
• Type G (commonly found in the UK)

In our experience, Type C plugs are the most common in Pakistan.

Voltage is 230 at 50 hertz.

Note that power outages are common in the more mountainous communities, including in Hunza and Skardu. Whilst on a trekking tour in Pakistan, you can charge your gear using the camp generator at the end of the night. While Epic does provide a generator, we highly recommend that everyone invest in a good portable solar panel while trekking in Pakistan as they are usually more convenient.

• Pakistan is an Islamic country but it is not a theocracy. This means that state and religion are institutionally separated and Pakistani law is based on British common law, rather than Sharia (Islamic) Law (in theory anyway).
• Whilst socially conservative, most of the population consider themselves to be moderate and secular Muslims tolerant of other religions. Hijabs are not obligatory, and burkas are very rare (at least in the areas of the country we are visiting).
• In general, it is best not to discuss politics or religion with locals, at least not as a topic of conversation when you first meet them. If appropriate and if you have gotten to know an individual on a deeper level, it is fine to discuss those topics.
• Local people will be genuinely curious about your life, what you do for work, your family (if you are male they will almost certainly ask if you’re married and how many kids you have), and about life in the west. Taking the time to connect with locals and share life experiences will only add to the overall experience of your journey around Pakistan.
• Pakistan is a beautiful and diverse country which will richly reward explorers. However, it is a developing country with a challenging modern history; as such, tourism infrastructure is still in its infancy. This can sometimes mean low sanitation standards, police checkpoints to deal with, poor road conditions, all kinds of delays, and things not always going to plan!
• Guests will note that there is limited mixing of the sexes in Pakistan. Men tend to hang out with other men and women with women. You will also note that when locals approach foreigners, they tend to separate themselves on gender grounds; Pakistani men want pictures with the guys (and foreign women) in our groups and the women with the girls in the group!
• Some local porters (who may or may not speak any English) may not make conversation and or eye contact with foreign females. This is nothing against all you ladies, it is more of a cultural thing common across Pakistan.

Nepal, Patagonia, New Zealand; all of these locations have been done time and time again and are on the verge of being spoiled by over-tourism. 

Pakistan, on the other hand, is still quite raw and relatively untouched by foreign tourists. It’s one thing to have some of the most gorgeous scenery in the world; it’s quite another to find it almost completely empty.

Simply put, there are a TON of unexplored areas to find and adrenaline-filled opportunities to try out here. Travel to Pakistan now before it becomes the next big holiday destination and is potentially ruined. 

We offer several kinds of trips in Pakistan! All feature to varying extents a mix of active, cultural, culinary, and immersive activities, among other kinds of fun.

One thing is for sure though: all of our adventure tours in Pakistan feature some sort of hiking or physical outlet (because we love to be active even while on holiday). Some feature more hiking than others.

Our K2 Base Camp itinerary is the most physically demanding itinerary we currently offer (13+ days of walking). Our Discover the Hunza Valley itinerary is less intensive (6 days of walking) and would be better suited for more casual adventurers. The Trekking Amongst Giants tour is somewhere in between the two aforementioned.

You can expect the following when trekking on almost any of our Pakistani adventure tours:

• Dusty trails and hot days at lower elevations.
• The chance of snow at higher elevations (4500+ meters), even in summer!
• A mix of terrain but mostly undulating and rocky.
• Support in the form of porters, cooks, and other locally sourced staff.
• 360 degrees of mountain views at almost every moment.
• 3 hearty meals a day. 
• A healthy dose of camaraderie and the chance to form lifelong bonds.

Despite their sheer proximity to one another, the Karakoram and Himalaya mountain ranges are quite different from one another.

The Himalaya , which are many adventurers’ first forway into big mountain territory, are generally broader, more dispersed, and more vegetated (at lower elevations). Crucially, the Himalaya have two main trekking seasons, post and pre-monsoon.

The Karakoram , which many people mistake for the Himalaya (they’re actually geographically separate) are much more dramatic on the other hand. The topography is far more rugged and features more sheer, often precarious profiles, giving the Karakoram a more “mangled” appearance overall. There is only one trekking season, the summer, and temperatures can swing wildly during this period.

Crucially, there is little to no teahouse-style trekking in Pakistan, which is a staple of the Nepalese Himalaya. Trekkers in Pakistan must self-sufficient and be able to make camp for long periods of time.

Even though different itineraries entail different levels of physical demand, being in decent shape is usually enough to take part in one of our Pakistani trekking tours.

Participants should be able to do the following:

• Carry a backpack weighing between 10-15 pounds (5-7 kilos) for several days at a time.
• Walk for 6-8 hours at a time.
• Be comfortable exerting oneself at higher altitudes (4000+ meters).
• Handling occasional inclining as well as declining slopes.

João has born in the mountains of Madeira Islands in Portugal. Nature lover, writer, musician, guide, for him, a day without contact with outdoor vibes is a nightmare. 

With a degree in Cultural Studies in Portugal and a Master of Arts in Global Cultures and Creativity in the U.K.

João found out what really matters in life can be found on the trails, and in the contact with people from different backgrounds and cultures.

Guiding, crazy trekking missions, and sharing observations about the natural world, – these are some of João’s passions.

Sohail Sakhi 🇵🇰

Sohail is the newest addition to the Epic team and we are beyond stoked to have him on board. As a veteran of the Karakoram and a native of Karimabad in Hunza, there is not much Sohail can’t do in the mountains. 

Besides having the ability to speak more languages than we can count, Sohail has explored every corner of Gilgit Baltistan and logs more trekking miles 

in a year than most people will do in a lifetime. As of the summer of 2022, Sohail has summited Gasherbrum 1, Gasherbrum 2, and K2 – three of Pakistan’s five 8000-meter peaks. Sohail guides several trips including our annual bespoke expeditions but specializes in Hunza Valley tours.

Pedro’s been traveling all around the globe since 2009. His keen interests in documentary photography, rural life, and local people from different ethnic groups have been the focus of many of his professional projects. Since 2012, he has developed his passion for travel and awesome shared experiences into a full-time adventure photography tour leader position.

Pedro has found himself continuously going back to the Middle East, with his likely favorite destination being Iran. Pedro lead his 11th tour in Iran with Epic in spring 2020

A veteran of Pakistan travel, Ralph is an experienced guide, photographer and writer who specializes in documenting remote locations. 

Not one to simply go where everyone else does, he insists on exploring new and lesser-known areas.

Together with Epic Expeditions, he shows people parts of Pakistan that most other operators don’t even know about. He is particularly fond of the village of Barah, which he believes will become just as famous as Hunza one day.

Chris Lininger 🇺🇸

Since he started exploring the world, Chris has been seeking out every shade of adventure in various parts of the globe and had visited more than 70 countries along the way. 

Over the last 10 years, Chris has logged more than 7000 trail miles across five continents and climbed multiple 6000 + 7000 meter peaks in Pakistan and Nepal.

A few years back, a distant dream and a deep passion for the mountains and the people of Pakistan led Chris to co-found Epic Expeditions at a time when foreign adventure tourism in Pakistan was almost nonexistent. Since then, Chris has guided more than 20 expeditions to various parts of Northern Pakistan.

Chris believes in using photography and powerful adventure experiences to dismantle negative stereotypes regarding what mainstream media considers “dangerous” countries while facilitating unique and meaningful memories in the mountains for countless people from around the globe. 

For him, an ideal start to the day begins with a steaming cup of good coffee, the beam of a headlamp, alpine boots, and a camera in hand.

He lives in Madeira Island when not leading expeditions in far-flung lands.

The Best Adventure Treks in Pakistan

There are so many adventure treks in Pakistan some of which include K2 Base Camp & Gondogoro La (5,940m) trek, Snow lake trek, Karomber lake trek, Rush lake trek, Fairy Meadows & Nanga Parbat base camp trek, Rakaposhi basecamp trek, Dudipatsar lake trek and many more. Looking for the best trekking options in the Northern Areas of Pakistan? I have picked some of the best based on ease of access, trail conditions, accessibility and perhaps more importantly scenic beauty and the chance to see the fascinating cultural of the region.

K2 Base Camp and Gondogoro La Trek

This is mother of all treks in Pakistan. It is one of the best adventure treks in the Central Karakoram National Park. K2 (8611m) is the second tallest mountain in the world and this 18 days trek is a once in life experience. This trek provides one of best views of some of the world’s tallest moutains. Especially Concordia, which is at the junction of the Godwin Austen and Baltoro glaciers, often referred to as “The Throne Room of Gods” provides the best panoramic view of the mighty mountains of Karakoram region including 4 of the 14 8-thousanders high mountains which include K2, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum-1 and Gasherbrum-2. To reach Concordia trekkers have to walk on Baltoro glacier ( 63 km ), longest glacier outside the polar region, and witness the beauty of Trango Towers, Masherbrum and so many well known peaks of Karakoram in Gilgit Baltistan.

Gondogoro La (5940m) is a high mountain pass which connects Concordia with Hushe valley in Ghangche District of northern Pakistan. This is a highly technical pass and requires usage of fixed ropes and crampons.

Do you need a guide?

K2 base camp and Gondogoro La is a long and hard trek and should only be handled by a travel company which offers touring services for this trek. There are lots of companies in Pakistan and specifically in Skardu which offer trips to K2 base camp with professional guides.

When to go?

The weather in Karakorams in more unpredictable and dramatic than Himalayas. This trek should be done between May and September. June to August is monsoon season (rainy season) in Pakistan but this is also the time when most of the snow melts and glacier crevasses are visible making it easy to choose your path.

Food and accommodation

The travel company organizing your trip will handle all the logistics including food, camping and hotel stays.

Snow Lake Trek

Snow lake is actually it a leveled ground of snow having about 16km of diameter at about 16,000 feet (4,877 m) above sea level. This lake forms two great glaicers i.e Biafo & Hisper. one flows down to skardu while the other to the Hisper Nagar. The journey to Snow Lake typically starts from Skardu, which can be reached in 45 minutes by plane or in 2 days by road from Islamabad. From Skardu, a jeep takes travelers through the Braldu Gorge to the last inhabitable village of Askole. Askole is the same place from where the trek to both Snow lake and K2 starts initially. After 2 of hours long trek to Khorofong the trek then turns northwest up the Biafo Glacier to Snow Lake.

Snow lake is 21 days long trek from Islamabad to Islamabad. This one of the toughest treks in Gilgit-Baltistan region. The trekkers have to be roped for almost the whole trek duration as there are chances of being falling into crevasses. Snow lake provides one of the best panoramic views of high mountains. The end of trek leads to Hunza valley which itself is one of the most beautiful valleys of Gilgit-Baltistan region and offers stunning views of Rakaposhi ( 7788m ), Lady-Finger and various other sky-rocketing peaks.

Like K2 base camp trek Snowlake trek is also a long and hard trek. You hit the Biafo glacier on the very first day of the trek. The first two days of trek on Biafo glacier are tricky as you navigate through the slippery slops of the unstable end of this mighty glacier. You should hire services of a professional travel services provider.

Snowlake is also located in Karakorams so weather here is same as that of K2 base camp trek. June to September is recommended time for this trek.

All the logistics including food, camping and hotel stays should be handled by the company managing your trip.

Karomber Lake Trek

Karomber lake is not only one of the highest lakes of Pakistan but also unspoiled by human beings so far. I believe the main reason that Karomber still safe from human encroachment is because that it is located in one of the remotest areas. To reach here from Islamabad it takes at least 5 days.

Karomber lake is situated at the boundary of Broghil valley, Chitral, KP and Ishkoman, Gilgit Baltistan but is considered to be part of Ishkoman, Gilgit Baltistan.

There are multiple treks which lead to Karomber lake. Most of the trekkers use the Chitral route to complete this trek but few daring souls have completed this trek via Chillinji pass (5,335 m) from Chuparsan, Gilgit Baltistan side. Another famous mountain pass which is often combined with Karomber lake trek is Darkot pass (4,703 m). Normally trekkers go to Karomber lake via Chitral-Mastuj-Kashmanja route and exit via Chikar-Darkut-Yasin-Gilgit route. An alternate option is to exit via Ishkoman valley in Gilgit Baltistan.

Broghil valley is known to be largest wetlands of Pakistan. It runs in parallel to Wakhan corridor in Afghanistan and the people on both sides not only share the Wakhi culture but also have family relationships with each other. Another major attraction of Karomber lake trek is Yaks which you will find in abundance in Broghil valley.

Karomber lake trek is among one of the most beautiful adventure treks in Pakistan.

Rush Lake Trek, Nagar Valley

Rush lake is the jewel of Nagar valley. Rush lake is highest alpine lake of Pakistan. It is one of the best mid size treks and offers some of the stunning views of mountains. Some of those mountains are above 7,000m e.g. Spantik peak ( 7,027 m ), Malubiting peak ( 7,458 ), Ultar Sar ( 7,388 m) etc.

The trek of Rush lake starts from Hopper valley in Nagar district of Gilgit Baltistan region. Just after few minutes you hit the first glacier i.e. Baultar glacier. After 1 and half hour trek through dry patch you come across Barpu grey glacier. Afterwards is around 3 hours of trek to the first campsite of the trek known as Barichkor.

2nd day of Rush lake trek is very steep. One gains almost 1,200m altitude on this day. Couple of hours further trek up to Rush Phari peak offers view of some of the giants of Karakorams e.g. K2 (8,611 m).

My favourite thing about Rush lake is the reflection of peaks. At dawn or dust the reflections of mountains in the lake create unmatched views. It is one of the best adventure treks in Pakistan. On the way back one can either choose the same route or choose a slightly different route to spend a night at one of the most beautiful campsites i.e. Hamdaar. Hamdaar offers stunning views of Spantik peak.

Nanga Parbat Base Camp Trek

Nanga Parbat (8126 m) base camp trek is another good trek in the north of Pakistan. Nanga Parbat is 9th highest mountain in the world and 2nd highest in Pakistan after K2 hence it doesn’t only attract trekkers but also climbers.

The adventurous trek of Nanga Parbat base camp starts from Raikot bridge on Karakoram Highway road which is 61km away from the nearest city of Chillas. First a jeep ride of 1-2 hours takes you to Tattu village and believe me this jeep ride is one of the most adventurous and thrilling one in the world. From Tattu village you trek continuously for 3-4 hours to reach Fairy Meadows which is a piece of heaven at 3,300 meters above sea level.

The Nanga Parbat base camp trek starts from Fairy Meadows. The first 30-40 minutes of hiking is very easy and takes you through the beautiful Beyal camp. From Beyal camp it is a steep hike of 4-5 hours to reach base camp. Once you are base camp then you can relax there or may be have a bowl of soap and a cup of tea from a small hut operated by a local.

It is one of the most popular adventure treks in Pakistan. It serves as a launching pad for those who are new into adventure travel.

Chitta Katha Lake Trek

Chitta Katha lake (13,500 feet or 4,100 m) is situated in the Shounter valley and has a unique water color and landscape around it. Chitta Katha lake is accessible from Kel by a 20 km long jeep track and then further 5-6 km hiking trek leads to the lake.

An adrenaline jeep ride of 2 hours takes you to upper Domel. From upper Domel you start hiking towards the lake and camp at either deck-1 or deck-2. Next morning you start hiking towards the lake and and after couple of hours of steep hike you reach the lake.

The best time to do this trek is August to September because this is the period in which the lake melts fully. This trek can be done in 4 days starting from Islamabad.

This one is my favorite among short adventure treks.

Kutwal Lake, Haramosh Valley Trek

Kutwal lake is located in Haramosh valley. Haramosh valley itself is located in Gilgit district on Skardu road. It takes 2 hours drive from Gilgit to Sassi from where you can hire 4×4 jeep for a ride into Haramosh valley. Around 2 hours of jeep ride will take you to Iskere village and then after 4-5 hours of trek you will be at Kutwal lake.

Haramosh valley consists of 2 sub-valleys. One is Kutwal valley and the other is Khaltoro valley. Though both valleys are beautiful but Kutwal valley is known is its jewel of Kutwal lake as well as for the Haramosh pass which connects Haramosh valley with Arandu valley in Baltistan region.

From Kutwal lake you can see mighty Haramosh peak ( 7,397 m ). You can venture a little further up towards Haramosh La base camp. From Haramosh pass base camp you can see the beautiful Laila peak.

Dagri Bangla Trek

Dagri Bangla Trek is one of my favourite short treks in Pakistan. It can be either 2 days trek from Bhiran Gali to Nathiagali or 3 days trek from Thandiani to Nathiagali.

If you start the trek from Thandiani then you spend 1st night at Bhiran Gali forest rest-house, 2nd night at Dagri bangla forest rest-house and finish the trek on 3rd day at Nathiagali. If you do it in 2 days from Bhiran Gali to Nathiagali then you spend the only night at Dagri Bangla forest rest-house and next day you finish your trek at Nathiagali.

From Nathiagali to Dagri Bungalow it is around 15km long track and takes 8 to 9 hours to complete the trek. From Dagri Bangla to Bhiran Gali it is 13km trail which takes another 9-10 hours to complete the trek. Beerangali to Thandiani extension is another 10km. Total trek distance from Nathiagali to Thandiani is almost 40km.

I personally prefer to start the trek from Bhiran Gali and end at Naghiali to make it a perfect weekend trip. To do this trek in 2 days from Islamabad you will hire a private taxi to take you to Abbotabad early in the morning. From Abbotabad you will book a local 4×4 jeep for Bhiran Gali. By 12pm you should start your trek because the trek is not easy and you might have to trek in the dark by end of the day.

Some people start the trek from Nathiagali, spend the night at Dagri Bangla and next day come back to Nathiagali. This is an easy option for those who want to avoid the hassle of managing the transport via Islamaabd-Abbotabad route.

If you have done Nathiagali trek before then it might be easy to follow the trail from the point where there is a signboard, on a ridge where a trail goes south-west while the Maranjani trail goes north-west, which points towards Dagri Bangla. So it is doable without guide but I would highly recommend to hire a guide in order to avoid any kind of inconvenience.

If you want to do the trek from Bhiran Gali to Nathigali via Dagri Bangla or vice versa then guide is must otherwise you might get into serious trouble.

Dagri Bangla trek can be easily done from May to November. Expect some glaciers on your way to Dagri Bangla from Bhiran Gali side in May or snowfall in November.

The building of Dagri Bangla is badly damaged due to 2005 earthquake so you must arrange your own camping equipment. Similarly you should carry food with you because the trek is a complete wilderness and you will hardly see locals let alone shops etc. Water availability as another issue at Dagri Bangla. There is a clean water spring in the forest at 20-25 minutes distance from Dagri Bangla. So you need to keep either couple of 1.5 litre bottles or water canes with you.

Pakistan’s Hunza Valley and Baltistan Trek – Base Camps of Nanga Parbat and Rakaposhi

Talk about majesty. Lodged somewhere between the mythical Shangri-la of James Hilton’s Lost Horizon and Kipling’s Man Who Would Be King is the astounding beauty of Northern Pakistan. The valleys of Hunza with its jagged peaks and natural sculpted beauty, protecting the lush green valleys and apricot orchards below are a near utopia for mountain lovers. This combined with travels through nearby Baltistan, once a part of Tibet, unique in its village architecture and home some of the world’s most iconic peaks (K2, Trango Towers, G2, Nanga Parbat), makes for a most spectacular journey.

To best visit this region of Northern Pakistan, we will travel by vehicle to the noted locations and tour villages before taking on the hikes to Rakaposhi and Nanga Parbat base camp. Thus we can best title this journey as a village touring trip with daily walks, culminating in treks to the Rakaposhi and Nanga Parbat base camp.

I just wanted to tell you that the Pakistan trip was incredible. Eric was amazing. Momin and Rafeek were incredible. The treks were great and absolutely beautiful. I really enjoyed meeting in the homes and eating with some of the local Pakistani families.

Our voyage begins in the stunning Hunza Valley where we complete a series of remote treks. The upper valleys and villages of Hunza are nothing short of spectacular, home to the famous Passu Cones. The villages of Hunza originally explored for England by the famed or infamous Francis Younghusband in 1898. The people of Hunza come from the mythical Wakhan Valley of Afghanistan, and herald the Ismaili Muslim region of Northern Pakistan, warm, inviting and proud of their homeland and all its beauty. Though many of our days are in villages, we will take on a number of day hikes in the areas we travel through. From Hunza we are make our way to Rakaposhi Basecamp, putting is deep into the Karakorum and a chance to make a glacier crossing, among these giant peak from Rakaposhi to Diran Basecamp. Our final trek takes us the legendary Nanga Parbat with its lush flowered meadows. Nanga Parbat borders on the Baltistan region  once part of Tibet. These are the gatekeepers of the great Karakorum and often serve as climbing partners to expeditions taking on K2, The Gasherbrum’s and Broad Peak.

The itinerary for this expedition was created by Gordon Janow , who first visited Pakistan in 1987 and will be led by Himalayan Climber and Guide Eric Murphy .

Trekking Destinations:

Nanga Parbat, the 9th highest mountain in the world at 26,660 feet. It is a peak of great beauty and uniquely different when viewed from each of its faces, Rupal, Diamir and Raikot. First climbed by Hermann Buhl in 1953 and has a long climbing history as part of its lore (See reading list).

The level of difficulty of trekking easier in comparison to treks like Everest Base Camp Trek as these are much shorter in length. Trekkers should be in very good physical condition as we do have some very steep ascents.

Our leader for this trip is famed guide  Eric Murphy , an internationally certified mountain guide with years of experience guiding Alpine Ascents trips on Everest and Kilimanjaro. The itinerary and scouting trip was completed by Gordon Janow and Eric Murphy. Gordon is a Himalayan expert who first visited the region in 1987.

Each night is spent in local accommodations in the area, with nights in tents or huts during the trekking portion. Single accommodations are available for an additional fee.

All rental gear will be mailed to the trekker prior to the climb. Trekkers are expected to clean all rental gear and those requesting rental gear must submit an expedition rental form online. Return it to us by mail following the expedition

While all items are required there may be times when some of the items on the gear list may not be used (such as warm weather or changing conditions). The gear lists are created by the guides to assist in having trekkers be prepared to enjoy the hikes in any conditions.

While it is impossible for us to list all brands for certain gear, we do offer a wide variety of equipment in our Gear Shop, that has been hand-picked by our staff of mountaineering experts. Please feel free to call our offices with any gear questions or substitutes.

Currently no inoculations needed though we expect trekkers to be vaccinated against Covid 19.

Climbers fly in to Islamabad Pakistan – most travel by Qatar Airways via Doha.

Fares are generally less expensive when booked early. You may use our Travel Agent Charles Mulvehill   or book flights your self. Please note that flights booked on-line are often difficult to change. Please send us a copy of your flight schedule as early as possible as this allows us to book pick ups and hotels. Most will fly Qatar Airways via Doha.

Your guide or an Alpine Ascents representative will meet you at the airport in Islamabad. Look for a large Alpine Ascents sign.

We are happy to make arrangements such as personalized tours, extra hotels rooms, airport pick ups and arrange for private rooms. Please indicate that you would like a private room on your application and we will contact you with information on single room supplement costs (for hotels only).

Why THESE Pakistan Adventure Tours?

In the past few years since I ran my first tour to magical Pakistan, foreign tourism to Pakistan has absolutely exploded, with many people choosing to travel with a tour group .

While this is great in some aspects, it’s also, to be frank, cheapened Pakistan travel as the tour space is now VERY full and, frankly, some people who are operating tours to Pakistan should not be.

I know of a few instances where influencers who have NEVER stepped foot in the country are bringing groups with them on their first time-visit, which in my view is undeniably irresponsible and is not going to lead to the kind of depth of experience that one can have by traveling with somebody who really knows the country well.

While Pakistan is safe even for independent travel, If I WAS opting to go on a guided tour, I would want to feel confident that my tour guide knows their shit. I’d want a guide that could really improve my experience and make it better because of unique knowledge, experience and connections within the country.

Diving in, here are just a few things that set the four operators I am recommending apart from the rest…

Prior Pakistan Travel Experience

Every single one of our epic tour leaders has spent a SIGNIFICANT amount of time exploring Pakistan independently. We’re talking real budget backpacking , hitchhiking and motorbiking to some of the least visited spots in the country, AND a whole host of mountain adventures under their belt.

More importantly though, what sets the folks I am recommending apart from some other folks who really don’t care about Pakistan all that much is that have collectively spent years travelling through these lands on their own, for the pure love of Pakistan travel. Some of them (Samantha and Alex) speak Urdu, and all have extensive local contacts you can only garner from some serious time spent in the country.

Immersive Itineraries

Most Pakistan tour itineraries rarely careen off the beaten path. To be fair, it’s a fucking great path which I helped beat myself but Pakistan has more to offer than the classic; Fairy Meadows , the parts of Hunza that lie along the Karakoram Highway, Lahore.

Such tours these days can feel a bit less authentic as these areas have now been seeing tourists in significant numbers for a few years. With a bit more effort, or the help of an expert tour guide, one can still pretty easily get off the beaten path to explore parts of the country that are still relatively untouched.

By going with one of my buddies though you’ll see a totally different side to the country and explore snazzy locales, hidden hideaways, and genuine experiences that will make you feel more like you’re backpacking Pakistan with a group of buddies, rather than being led around on a bus-tour.

You’ll hike, camp, and even spend some of your nights in cozy traditional homes sharing laughs and making memories around an old-school fireplace. These are tours by adventurers, for adventurers through and through and I’ve been careful about who I do and don’t recommend for your tour guides; choosing folks I know and trust to put your experience above making money.

Connections

Pakistan is a country that lives and breathes on connections, and as we all know, real connections cannot be built in a day. Final Thoughts on These Pakistan Adventure Tours

My own history with Pakistan tours is… complicated. I first visited the country in 2015, and in 2016 I solo-founded a tour company, Epic Backpacker Tours, leading tours to Pakistan and Iran (leaning on my wife’s contacts and my own extensive time in the country). I led the first tour to Pakistan in 2017.

After three years of running the company, I bought in outside help and gave them 50% of the company as I wanted them to feel ownership; a concept I was passionate about at the time but which was ultimately rooted in misunderstood communism.

I continued to solo-fund the tour company during challenging times (looking at you, Covid) to support my Pakistani friends on the ground. All the while, the ‘help’ I had brought on kept asking me for more money in different ways and trying to get a larger percentage of the company off of me, despite the fact I was funding an unprofitable business.

After a mental breakdown on account of a challenging divorce and other personal reasons – very difficult times friends – I made a snap-decision to move away from this toxic relationship and I relinquished my share of the company, to be rid of a relationship that was causing me daily stress. The one condition was that my legacy contributing to the Pakistan tourism scene would be respected.

But unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. My history in the company hasn’t been preserved, and information on the internet has been manipulated to remove my contributions, and credit my former partner for all the work I had done. My former partner claims he first visited Pakistan in 2015, and that he founded the company.

I learnt some big lessons here, I had major heeby-jeebys about the guy I bought in to help me with the project from the start but I needed the help and he was available, so I ignored my intuition. Interestingly, this guy was the only person my dog ever tried to attack… I should have listened to my wise adventure doggo because my ‘partner’ turned out to be manipulative and, simply put, a liar. Today, the tour company Epic Backpacker Tours is still in operation but the guy I brought in has written me out of the story, inserting himself into my copy and attempting to dilute my legacy; He claims he visited Pakistan in 2015 (This is when I first visited, the first time he visited Pakistan was 2018, as an employee) and that he founded the tour company himself (a bald-faced lie).

This false information is still up upon the internet, and whilst I have a dizzying amount of voice messages, invoices, emails and Whatsapp messages showing the true story of this person coming on as an employee, I have at this point decided to let it go and not engage unless engaged. If I am engaged in any way, I’ll pop it all up online. Obviously, I strongly recommend NOT traveling with somebody who lies about when they first stepped foot in the country.

Losing the tour company did however make me truly sad, as I poured my heart and soul into this project. Despite everything that happened afterwards and the friction caused by it, it was still my baby, and I was proud of being one of the first (or maybe the first) travel bloggers to bring a group to Pakistan. It was also an important moment in my journey as launching the tours is what enabled me to scrape funds together to grow The Broke Backpacker.

I could go on and on with more details, but I don’t think this’ll serve you, dear reader. I have, at this point, let go of my mistake. The mountains know, and they shall avenge me.

The thing is, Pakistan IS an absolutely amazing country, it is also somewhere that often DOES make sense to travel with a tour group, especially if you are shorter on time, as logistics can be challenging and quality contacts hard to make. There are now however SO MANY operators out there that it’s hard to find the best tour options for Pakistan and so I sat down and penned this out, to assist you dear reader in picking the best experience for your journey to Pakistan.

Pakistan truly is the trip of a lifetime and I’m delighted to be able to advise you on how to find an honest, experienced, guide who can show you this marvelous destination.

Pakistan Travel Tips

A few more cheeky Pakistan travel tips to get you excited for a tour of a lifetime…

You will need a visa to travel to Pakistan, which can these days be obtained online at their E-visa website . Each operator will provide you with a “letter of invitation” (or LOI) to ensure you get the visa, but you’ll have to cover the application costs yourself, which range from $10-$60 depending on your nationality.

Camping in Pakistan

Not every tour will involve camping, but for those that do, you might want to invest in a piece or two of a quality tent . Camping under the billion-starred skies of Pakistan have been some of my favourite nights on the road.

Food + Water

Pakistani food is spicy AF – though in the mountain regions you’ll find very different dishes that seem to more closely resemble European tastes. While it is a heavily meat-focused nation, vegans and vegetarians will find themselves satisfied – the hoilo garma in Hunza is a particularly epic meatless dish.

Tap water in Pakistan is NOT SAFE to drink ANYWHERE. I recommend grabbing yourself a Grayl before heading out on your adventure, not only will it save you money but it also does something for Pakistan’s trash problem. (Which isn’t as bad as India’s at least.)

What to Wear

Respect goes a long way in Pakistan – this is a conservative country, and you do want to show that you care about cultural norms. No, you don’t need to wear a hijab (except in mosques) BUT modest clothing like long, loose shirts are a must.

Many men wear Western clothes, which is fine, but shorts will make you stick out. It’s also important to mention that while places like Hunza are quite liberal, that doesn’t mean you should dress like you’re in Bali. 99% of women still wear the local outfit, the shalwar kameez, which also happens to be one of the comfiest outfits out there.

Alcohol and Beyond

As an Islamic Republic, Pakistan is nearly 97% Muslim, BUT alcohol isn’t fully illegal. While you certainly won’t find bars, liquor stores, or clubs, some “wine shops” and upscale hotels are legally allowed to sell to foreigners and non-Muslim Pakistanis.

I think you’ll be just as surprised as I was with how open Pakistan really is – the country also has some of the best hashish in the world (which is technically illegal but not policed). Best treks in Pakistan: 5 great adventures

We take a look at the best treks in Pakistan, from classic base camp journeys to snowy high pass odysseys

Having just returned from the  K2 base camp trek  in  Pakistan with my interest in the Karakoram well and truly stoked, I thought I’d explore some additional hiking itineraries for my next trip to this beautiful country.

With legendary soaring summits, panoramic high passes and idyllic mountain meadows, Pakistan has a wealth of outstanding hiking options to rival its Himalayan neighbours. Below, we explore some of the best treks in Pakistan.

Best treks in Pakistan

All of the below treks are located in a safe and secure part of the Gilgit-Baltistan region. As with any travel, it’s worth checking the FCO’s areas of concern before you fly.

1. K2 base camp and Gondogoro La

Duration: 14 days Difficulty: Very hard Max altitude: 5,560m (18,241ft)

K2 base camp is Pakistan’s flagship trek and one of the world’s most iconic. At 8,611m (28,251ft), K2 is the world’s second-highest mountain, one of just 14  eight-thousanders  and a member of the  seven second summits .

There are several variations available, the most popular of which is a simple ‘there-and-back’ route. This route is easier as it avoids the high pass of Gondogoro La. It also offers more flexibility as it’s possible to take a number of detours en route including to Trango Towers base camp as well as options to overnight at either K2 or Broad Peak base camps, or both.

2. Snow Lake and Hispar La

Duration: 13 days Difficulty: Hard Max altitude: 5,151m (16,900ft)

The trek to the vast basin of ice that is Snow Lake (not actually a lake) begins at the village of Askole and briefly follows the route to K2 base camp. The trail then breaks off along the Biafo Glacier for 65km to the greatest concentration of glacial ice outside Antarctica. Here, at 5,151m, the Biafo and Hispar glaciers converge. Once over the pass, the trail continues along the Hispar Glacier to the village of Hispar.

En route, walkers will see a number of 7,000m peaks including the infamous Baintha Brakk aka the Ogre. The craggy 7,285m (23,901ft) peak was the site of Doug Scott and Chris Bonington’s epic 1977 descent where Scott broke both legs following their summit. Fortunately, they both survived the subsequent gruelling weeklong return to base camp.

3. Rakaposhi base camp

Duration: 3-4 days Difficulty: Moderate Max altitude: 4,000m (13,123ft)

The Rakaposhi base camp is a popular trail that can be completed in as little as a day or two. However, trekkers won’t get the time to really appreciate the superb scenery on offer. Located in the Nagar Valley around 75km to the north of Gilgit, the 7,788m (25,551ft) peak of Rakaposhi is the 27th highest mountain in the world.

The trek begins at the village of Minapin on the Karakoram Highway. The trail climbs through a sheltered valley via meadows, pine forests and shepherd’s pastures.

Rakaposhi means ‘snow covered’, but the mountain is also known as Dumani, which translates as ‘mother of mist’. The summit is an ultra-prominent peak – notable for its exceptional rise over the surrounding terrain.

4. Rupal Face and Mazeno La

Duration: 6-9 days Difficulty: Moderate-hard Max altitude: 5,400m (17,717ft)

Trekkers essentially walk around Nanga Parbat on this stunning trail in the shadow of the mountain’s infamous Rupal Face, which rises 4,600m (15,090ft) above. Trekkers have the option to either hike up to Shaigiri camp and return the same way or continue over the Mazeno La Pass to Fairy Meadows.

The return route is shorter, quicker and easier, while the Mazeno La Pass offers a longer, more challenging option with a wider range of views. If trekkers opt for the Mazeno La then the trail finishes at the idyllic Fairy Meadows where an extension to Nanga Parbat base camp can be easily tacked on.

5. Nanga Parbat base camp

Duration: 2-3 days Difficulty: Moderate Max altitude: 4,000m (13,123ft)

Nanga Parbat is an astonishingly beautiful mountain. Surrounded by lush forests and glacial lakes, the mountain towers with tremendous vertical relief over the local terrain in all directions.

But don’t let its beauty fool you: Nanga Parbat is notoriously dangerous. It was once known as the ‘killer mountain’ and is the third most dangerous 8,000m peak after Annapurna and K2. Before 1990, Nanga Parbat had an astonishing death rate of 77%, meaning summiteers were more likely to die than survive.

The trek to base camp is nowhere near as intimidating, as it’s located at a relatively low altitude for an 8,000m peak and is easily accessed. It begins at the spectacular Fairy Meadows, one of Pakistan’s most popular tourist destinations, and can be completed as either an overnight or two-night trek.

Best treks in Pakistan: the essentials

What: Exploring the best treks in Pakistan.

Where: During the treks, expect to be camping in two-man tents with access to only basic (if any) facilities. There is a range of accommodation available in Skardu and Gilgit . If visiting Fairy Meadows, we recommend Fairy Meadows Cottages .

In Islamabad, I stayed at the  Ramada Islamabad . If you really fancy being looked after, then the  Islamabad Marriott  is a good choice surpassed only by the extravagant  Serena .

When: The best time for trekking in Pakistan is from mid-June to mid-September with July and August being the optimum months. Before then, trekking is still possible, but until mid-June, excessive snow remains on passes and north-facing slopes, keeping any passes higher than 3,000m closed. Most passes will be closed by the end of September when heavy snow returns.
