We’ve been aching to get out and explore after months in lockdown. Right on the border between Gauteng and the North West province, Harties offers visitors a number of fun activities and experiences. Here are our top places to explore in Harties over a single day. Travel safe!
A Harties Day Trip
Hartbeespoort is a small resort town located in the North West province of South Africa. Joburgers flock here over weekends and holidays to escape from the chaos of the city. The town offers a wide variety of activities for all ages, making it a go-to day trip choice.
From homely restaurants to adventure sports and nature reserves, Harties is an ideal family-friendly getaway destination as it only takes a couple of hours to reach from Johannesburg.
Here is our list of top places to visit in Harties on your next day trip.
Chameleon Village
Looking for a Harties destination that’s not only family-friendly, but also offers plenty of entertainment for the whole family? Then pay a visit to Chameleon Village ! This is the perfect place to make a pit stop to explore. There’s foodie spots, a market, thrills for the kids and much more to enjoy here. Haven’t been to this unique spot? Well, then here are 5 reasons why you need to spend a day at Chameleon Village with your family and friends. Click here for all the details.
The Windmill Restaurant
Unless you leave Joburg at the crack of dawn, you will probably arrive in Hartbeespoort by mid-morning. Celebrate your arrival with a delectable brunch spread at the Windmill Restaurant. Take your pick from a variety of gourmet toasties, eggs Benedict or a sweet waffle. It’s the perfect way to kick off your Harties daytime adventure.
Address: Facebook | 079 890 6420 | [email protected] | Jasmyn Farm Stall, 1 Jan Smuts Road, Hartbeespoort.
The Upside Down House
Now that you’ve had your first fuel up of the day, take a meander to the Upside Down House. This quirky marvel of architecture is sure to entertain the kids with its topsy turvy look. The entrance is a bit pricey, but it’s well worth it for the experience. Make sure to bring your camera (or phone) along for lots of pictures.
Address: R3 Hartbeeshoek Road, Hartbeespoort.
French Toast Koffie Kafee & Little Paris
If it’s just you and your sweetheart on this trip, treat them to a spot of romance at Little Paris. Modeled after the famous love bridge in Paris, this must-visit Harties venue is home to a miniature Eiffel Tower and the famous French Toast Koffie Kafee. Pick out a lock at the cafe and have you and your partner’s engraved on it. Then lock it to the bridge and your love is set to last forever. It’s a super cheesy but sweet gesture to remember as part of your day trip to Harties.
Address: French Toast Koffie Kafee, R511, Hartbeespoort.
The Strawberry Farm
By now you might be feeling peckish. Pull into The Strawberry Farm for a farm style picnic. You can pre-order a picnic basket prepared by the farm’s onsite restaurant or bring along your own selection of nibbles. During the summer months you can also go foraging through the farm’s strawberry fields. The Strawberry Farm is one of Hartbeespoort’s most tranquil venues. Set up your picnic along the banks of the dam and enjoy your day out in the fresh air. But be warned, the ducks may try to steal your lunch!
Address: S46 on R560 Skeerpoort (Near Hartbeespoort Dam).
Van Gaalen Cheese Farm
A trip to Hartbeespoort wouldn’t be complete without a couple of souvenirs. And what better keepsake than a tasty treat to take home with you? Visit Van Gaalen Cheese Farm to sample a variety of aged cheeses. You can also learn about the cheese making process here. Our favourite is the stinging nettle cheddar cheese, but don’t take our word for it. Visit the farm on your way through Harties and experience what ‘real’ cheese tastes like.
Address: Plot 260 Skeerpoort, Hartbeespoort.
The Elephant and Monkey Sanctuary
The Hartbeespoort Elephant and Monkey Sanctuary is one of the town’s most popular destinations to visit over day trips. Their elephant interaction programme takes place seven days a week, three times a day, allowing visitors to touch and interact with the majestic African elephant. Walk trunk and hand through the sanctaury and experience the absolute beauty of these treasure animals. The elephant interaction programme takes approximately 90 minutes, so make sure to plan accordingly.
Address: R512 Old RTB rd, Zandfontein, Hartbeespoort.
Harties Aerial Cableway
Close off an epic day of adventure at the Harties Aerial Cableway. Take the cable car to see the best possible views of the Dam and surrounding Magaliesberg escarpment. The cable car closes at 16:00, so don’t miss it! If heights aren’t your idea of a good time, go on a brisk hike or fast-paced mountain biking excursion. The cableway also has a fun kids zone to keep the little ones entertained, a number of restaurants and retail outlets. We can’t think of a better way to end off your day exploring Harties and all it has to offer.
Address: Plot 3, Melodie, Agricultural Holdings, Hartbeespoort.
Pretville is the only film town of its calibre open to the public in South Africa. Come and marvel at the realistic 1950s style sets and props, including a variety of funky vintage cars. This is the ideal spot to take a few candid photographs or simply make some great memories. There are a ton of fun activities to enjoy in the town as well. Slurp up a delicious milkshake at the Pretville Diner or take a tour of the town and see where all the movie magic happens.

Hartbeespoort Day Trip Guide
Hartbeespoort, also known as “Harties,” is a popular weekend destination for those from Joburg and Pretoria. Just about an hour away from both cities, a Hartbeespoort Day Trip is a great way to spend a Saturday or Sunday. There are plenty of activities and nibs options, whether you want to go on a hike or just spend the day on the water.
Did you know Hartbeespoort means “gorge of the hartebeest?” Hartebeest is a species of antelope, in Afrikaans.
You can get this view of the dam right before you cross the dam here . Just park on the side of the road.

Why take a Hartbeespoort Day Trip?
Hartbeespoort is known for its large dam and views of the surrounding Magaliesberg mountains . You can plan to spend a day doing a combo of hiking, sightseeing, and eating to make the most of your weekend.
The dam was originally built to support irrigation and has since expanded to include domestic and industrial use. The dam’s construction began in 1916. After several delays and flooding, the dam finally was completed in 1923. According to Wikipedia , the dam supports irrigation to tobacco, wheat, lucerne, fruit, and flower crops and fields.
As Joburg and Pretoria are deeply landlocked, dams are a source for water activities in the Gauteng and North West regions. There are yacht clubs, water sports, and plenty of holiday homes in Hartbeespoort. In fact, most of the dam’s shoreline is privately owned and taken up by holiday-makers homes.
What to do in Hartbeespoort
Is Magaliesberg synonymous with hiking? To me it is! You can get great views of the Magaliesberg mountains while hiking around Harties. As much of the land around the dam is private, you can’t really take a walk around the water. However, you can get some dam views depending on your hike route during your Hartbeespoort day trip.
Hennops Hiking Trials — 3 trail options (2.5 km, 5 km, 11 km), mountain biking, and off-roading trails. Two pools and braai facilities are included in your ticket. We hiked the 11km trail and enjoyed it! Start at 9 am or earlier. R100/pp, no reservations needed. Check out my trail guide here .
Hiking the Krokodilberg Trail in October!
Mogi Adventures — Head here for the Hennops River Hiking Trail. There are three trail options (6km, 8km, and 10km). Booking is essential via WhatsApp. R60/pp Adults and R30 for kids under 12. The trails open at 7:30 am and close at 3 pm on Saturdays, Sundays, and most public holidays.
Africaland — The Phaladingwe Hiking Trail is 7km long. Besides hiking, you can go river rafting, quad biking, mountain climbing, and mountain biking.
Van Gaalen Cheese Farm — Not just a farm, you can mountain bike, trail run, and hike across 30 km of the farm with 2 km, 4 km, 6 km, 8 km & 10 km hiking trails. Closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Open between 6 am-5 pm. Check the site for specific weekend timings. R40 hiking /R60 MTB. No booking required.
Horseback Ride — Got on a horse safari adventure in Silkaatnek Nature Reserve where you will see wildlife up close. You’ll see animals such as Giraffe, Kudu, Blue Wildebeest, Nyala, Impala, Ostrich, Blesbuck, Zebra, Springbok, and more!
Water Adventures
There are plenty of companies for water activities in Harties. I”d suggest going on a 2 hour boat cruise or a cruise with lunch included with Harties Boat Company.
Check out Boaters World Adventures for speedboats and jet ski tours. And, if you’ve always wanted to go on an airboat, now is your chance with Airboat Afrika .
Schoemansville Oewerklub/Oewer Club — If you want to enjoy the water but not get on it, head to this club. It’s basically the only way you can get access to the dam . There are picnic tables and braai spots available. Day entry is R100 for adults and there is also a R50 vehicle charge. (Kids under 12 are free).
Family Fun Adventures
Harties Cableway — Get panoramic views of Hartbeespoort on the cableway ! The cableway is generally open between 8:30 am- 4:30 pm. There is a bar and a small restaurant at the top! Check the site for details and book your ticket online for R240pp (closed Monday and Tuesday). You can spend 30 minutes or 4 hours up at the top.
You can wait in line to purchase tickets, but it’s much easier online! Then you can head straight up to the cableway platform.
Ama Zwing Zwing Zipline Tour — Go ziplining! Booking is essential. R420pp Adult / R320pp Child.
The Elephant and Monkey Sanctuary — Visit the elephant interaction program to walk with elephants and help feed them. R850pp Adult / R375pp Children aged 4-14.
Chameleon Village — This is a collection of shops, restaurants, and activities (minigolf, go-karts, paintball, and more). Hartbeespoort Snake and Animal Park is located inside this area. Entrance to the village is free; it’s kinda like a strip mall along the main road. Activities cost vary so check the website. Probably best for kids.
Lion and Safari Park — You can go on a guided, 1-hour ride in the safari park to see lions, wild dogs, and cheetahs . If you don’t want to drive yourself, you can request a pick-up from Joburg on this tour.
Van Gaalen Cheese Farm — Besides hiking, head to the cheese farm for a tour of traditional Dutch Gouda cheese-making (R138pp Adult). You can also get a meal at the Terrace Restaurant or book a picnic (R480 for 2 people). Make a reservation for all three here .
The Strawberry Farm — Well isn’t this just the cutest thing to do in Hartbeespoort ! Strawberry season is between late September and early December and you can visit on the weekend to pick strawberries . Bring your picnic basket and blanket to enjoy the farm between 8 am – 4 pm. For R100pp you can eat and pick as many strawberries as you can while at the farm. Strawberries are charged by weight to take home, or purchase pre-picked strawberries.
You can also book a spa and picnic package (R1850) or a full spa day (R899). The spa is open all week, all year (excluding major holidays). You can also spend the night in the guesthouse .
Unique sites in Hartbeespoort
The Hartbeespoort Dam — Park and walk along the dam to get a view of the mini Arc de Triomphe. You’ll just need 10 minutes or less to see the views. There is a parking lot here with some attendants, but you can also park along the side of the road by the Chameleon Village and walk. I was pleasantly surprised by how nice the dam is!
The Upside Down House —Take a look at this architectural marvel : the Upside Down House. It is exactly what it sounds like. You can enter the house too. The website reports visitors spend around 2 hours taking pictures of the house, though I haven’t done it myself to confirm. (That feels like a long time to me?) There is a small takeaway restaurant nearby if your photographing wears you out. R100pp, no booking required.
Little Paris —You can pretend you’re in Paris (with the right photo angle) and trick all your insta followers at Little Paris. A 12.5m “Eiffel Tower” was built in Hartbeespoort for a movie set (“ French Toast ”, about a South African girl finding her mother’s French toast recipe—I haven’t seen it). There is also a cafe here that was in the movie as well, also called French Toast .
Food in Harties
Nibs are essential while on a Hartbeespoort day trip!
Almost Orange —The Almost Orange Bistro is a lovely wine and tapas bar located inside an orange orchard. Read my full review here .
Silver Orange —Located right by Almost Orange, the Silver Orange is a beautiful restaurant serving delicious mains.
Kleine Rijke —Upon arrive you’ll think you’re in Cape Town. With its Dutch architecture and Hartbeespoort dam in the distance, the restaurant (and events space) is gorgeous . Check out the site for the opening hours if you’re up for the drive. It’s a great spot to sit outside, get a coffee, and enjoy the view. I loved the quinoa breakfast bowl. Arrive before 11:30am for breakfast or after 12pm for lunch. It’s worth it to call ahead to ask if they are open as it’s also a wedding venue.
Brunch with my friends Amy and Joyce on a Harties Girls Day Outing
Stef’s Table —This restaurant combos Asian, Mediterranean, South African, and French flavors.
Jasmyn Plaasprodukte / Jasmyn’s Windmill — The Windmill restaurant is set inside the Dutch-style windmill. There is seating inside, on deck, and in the garden. Waffles are the specialty here. Get fresh veggies and fruits while you’re here at the Plaasprodukte “farm products.”
There is also a small craft market every Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday outside the windmill with clothes, jams, and other products of the like.
French Toast —Head here while you’re in Little Paris for coffee and nibs.
Itinerary suggestions
Full-Day Hiking: Hike or mountain bike early in the morning at Hennops—go to Jasmyn’s Windmill for lunch and grocery shopping—stop at Little Paris for a picture (or have lunch here)—stop at Hartbeespoort dam—end the day with sundowners at Almost Orange or dinner at Silver Bistro. We did this our first time in Harties, but we just drove by Little Paris rather than stop in.
Fu ll-Day Cheese Adventure : Hike at Van Gaalen Cheese Farm and then take a cheese tour—strawberry picking and picnic at the Strawberry Farm—visit the Upside Down house then head home for dinner.
Full Day Chill Day 1: Have brunch at Little Paris—go on a boat ride around the dam—go on the Harties Cable Way — end the day with sundowners at Almost Orange, and dinner at Silver Bistro, or Stef’s Table.
Half-day Cape Town Vibes : You can have a total Cape Town-esque experience in Harties. Dress up, plan to take a lot of pics, and enjoy a sunny day in Harties with this itinerary option that I did for my friend’s birthday. Start off with brunch at Kleine Rijke (before 11:30am), go on an afternoon cable car ride, and then get drinks at Almost Orange. Top it off with dinner at Silver Orange or make it back home by 5pm.
Extend your Hartbeespoort Day Trip
Don’t feel like driving back to Joburg or Pretoria? You can wake up to some beautiful dam views if you stay in an Airbnb for the weekend. With just a quick look at Airbnb, I found some awesome homes that would also make a great romantic getaway or trip with your friends. This home has a pool and you can have your breakfast on the deck over the water. Spend the night on a boat here . Or, have views overlooking the dam at this spot.

A Visitor’s Ultimate Guide To Hartbeespoort Dam
Today, Hartbeespoort and the Hartbeespoort Dam are known mainly as a South African resort town north of Johannesburg where ‘Gautengers’ like to go for some R&R on the weekends.
It’s also known for its many popular attractions: Hartbeespoort Dam boat cruises, the Crocodile River and the Hartbeespoort Cableway (the longest aerial monocableway in all of Africa) which ascends up the slopes of the majestic Magaliesberg mountain range.
Still, there’s so much the average visitor or would-be holidaymaker might not know about Hartbeespoort Dam (or ‘Harties’ as its affectionately known by its groves of visitors each year) and the town of Hartbeespoort that surrounds it.
In this ultimate guide to the Hartbeespoort Dam, we aim to shed some light on this beautifully scenic area so that you will be empowered with everything you need to fully optimise your weekend away.
Here are some Hartbeespoort fast facts on the dam and the region’s infrastructure:
Hartbeespoort – Fast Fact Sheet
- Hartbeespoort consists of a number of smaller communities: Meerhof, Ifafi, Melodie, Schoemansville and Kosmos.
- Schoemansville is the oldest neighbourhood of Hartbeespoort and is named after General Hendrik Schoeman, a boer general in the Anglo-Boer War and original owner of the farm the Hartbeespoort Dam was built on. More on him later.
- This “poort” in the Magaliesberg was a well known spot where hunters would corner and shoot the hartebeest.
- Over 250 000 bags of cement were used to build the Hartbeespoort Dam wall.
- At full capacity, the Hartbeespoort Dam fills to 205 million cubic meters of water.
- The Hartbeespoort Dam was raised in 1970 when it underwent renovations that included the installation of crest gates.
- The dam wall is 149,5 metres long and 59,4 metres high, and built across a gorge that cuts through the Magaliesberg mountain range. The shape of the Hartbeespoort dam wall is found nowhere else in South Africa.
As with anything worthwhile in life, Hartbeespoort is filled with character once you get to know its ins and outs.

While Hartbeespoort means “gateway of the hartbees” in Afrikaans, there’s no doubt that this enchanting community is a gateway to more than just that specific species of antelope.
It’s a gateway to a rich and sprawling heritage.
The Hartbeespoort Dam itself was constructed as early as 1916 and was delayed only briefly by the First World War, some flu epidemics and the odd Afrikaner rebellion. It was completed in the beginning of 1923.
Ever since, The Hartbeespoort Dam resort has served to provide employment opportunities and poverty relief to the surrounding areas.
Naturally, it’s an area steeped in both history and relative mystery.
Much like most places of cultural significance across our beautiful and diverse country, the Hartbeespoort Dam area has been home to many an important historical figure over the years.

When it comes to the many things to do in Hartbeespoort, camping and fishing is right up there with the best and it doesn’t take more than looking out a window to see why.
Wildlife is everywhere you look.
Bird-watching enthusiasts can enjoy the many opportunities to lay their sights on cisticola, african pipit and the very rare kurrichane buttonquail in amidst the grassland landscape of the Hartbeespoort Dam area, along with an estimated 340 identified bird species.
Naturally, an area like this just lends itself to camping.
Any already powerful appreciation for the great outdoors is sure to be magnified by breathtaking views of the Hartbeespoort Dam and the Magaliesberg mountain range. These are views that will stay with you long after your stay.
If you’re an avid fisherman, The Hartbeespoort Dam is the spot for you.
The area offers a number of fishing destinations where anglers target big Carp, Bass, Kurper and Barbel, using flour dough, mielies and worms, chicken livers, crabs, worms, small fish, fish heads, spinners — you name it!
The catches are sizable too; 3 – 4kg fish are not at all uncommon in the area.
Just remember, being one of the top destinations of choice for Gauteng water sport lovers, bass anglers are obliged to accept that they’ll have to make do sharing the water with pleasure crafts of all shapes and sizes.
Luckily, the Hartbeespoort Dam is large enough that this isn’t ever too much of a problem.
A secret bay or secluded cove is always open somewhere, it’ll just take some exploring — which is arguably the most best part!
If you’re not in the mood for exploring, check out Ifafi Aquatic Club, Bushwillow Camp or Drie Berge. All three are known to be great fishing spots.
To save you the hassle of looking through all of the available Hartbeespoort accommodation options, we’ve taken the time to curate the top three hottest family friendly spots to stay in Hartbeespoort according to trusty TripAdvisor:
Kassaboera Lodge
Situated right on the Hartbeespoort Dam waterfront, Kassaboera Lodge is a doorway to some of South Africa’s most memorable tourist attractions like the Cradle of Humankind and Sun City.
It’s real selling point, however, is its warmth, comfort and incredible hospitality.
Its 109 glowing Tripadvisor reviews are a testament to this.
Kassaboera Lodge is a truly exceptional African experience, offering luxurious Hartbeespoort accommodation whilst incorporating an African theme throughout the lodge and establishment.
The Venue Country Hotel
The Venue Country Hotel is a top-class Hartbeespoort accommodation option known for its dining, drinks, entertainment and attractions that mostly occur in and around the Terrace Restaurant.
This restaurant also offers a huge outdoor area perfect for post- conference catch-ups while getting the latest update on whatever sport happens to be on and overindulging in delicious gourmet dishes prepared by the in-house chef. There’s also free, reliable Wi-Fi access, which is always a bonus.
Alpha Conference Centre
The renowned Alpha Conference Centre has been operational since 1983 and since then it’s been on the up and up, continually improving itself to meet the highest of standards and provide guests to the Hartbeespoort area comfort as well as convenience and efficient service.
If you’re looking for a place of pure serenity, cloaked by the Magaliesberg mountain range with accommodation that looks over lush gardens and natural beauty, look no further than Alpha Conference Centre.
Also, as its name suggests, it’s the ideal venue for conference evens or team-building programmes.
Finding decent options in the Hartbeespoort Dam accommodation space is never more than a Google search away these days, but the above three choices are the best as voted by the people and as such, if you’re thinking of staying in one of them on your next trip to Hartbeespoort Dam we advise booking well in advance to avoid disappointment.
Just like accommodation options, Hartbeespoort is swarming with viable options for fine dining or even just casual meals.
We’ve outlined three of the most popular below.
Once again, due to the popularity of the venues to follow, we advise that you book early to avoid disappointment:
Silver Orange Bistro
Head to Silver Orange Bistro for a laid-back atmosphere, delicious contemporary African cuisine and an award-winning wine list.
With its welcoming home-away-from-home atmosphere, Silver Orange Bistro is a family-friendly restaurant, but also works well as a romantic spot for two.
The chef insists on only using the freshest local and seasonal ingredients in everything they make, so you can be guaranteed that it will always be top-notch.
Meals are priced anywhere from R60 – R250.
Stef’s Table
You’ll find Stef’s Table, an intimate restaurant hidden away on the main road of Schoemansville, in an old rock structure amidst the lushest green scenery.
The venue features two comfortable dining rooms, one fitted with a hearty fireplace for those cold winter nights, and the other lording over the garden area, perfect for summer.
But, Stef’s Table’s food is its main selling point.
The la carte menu may be small but it packs a delicious Mediterranean punch, along with Asian, and South African dishes — with a French touch — lovingly prepped and prepared by co-host and chef, Stef himself.
Meal prices range anywhere from R130 – R180.
Siesta Tapas Bistro
Siesta Tapas Bistro is a Spanish restaurant with a uniquely South african twist located in Schoemansville in the Hartbeespoort area.
The idea is for guests to gather around and enjoy one another’s company while snacking away on a range of delicious tapas dishes. Simple, straightforward and bolstered by Siesta’s tranquil and rustic ambiance.
Whether it’s sangria in the summer or gluhwein in the winter, Siesta offers the ideal atmosphere in which to relax and kick back — plus some of the tastiest tapas in town!
Meal prices range anywhere from R50 – R170.
You will certainly not be stumped for things to do in Hartbeespoort.
From getting up close and personal with majestic animals in some of South Africa’s finest wildlife reserves to fine dining and even finer wining at some top-class brunch spots, the area has everything you could ever want.
Hartbeespoort Snake and Animal Park
Set against the foot of the Magaliesberg against the eastern shore of Hartbeespoort Dam lies the Hartbeespoort Zoo and Snake Park. The park is quite something — a real life recreation of a natural world where visitors can experience the essence of what makes the area so special. Visitors can expect to get face to face with tigers and other big cats, chimpanzees and various primates, hyenas, otters, birds and one of South Africa’s best reptile collections. The Hartbeespoort Zoo and Snake Park is a must-see, and basically an essential if you have kids.
Hartbeespoort Crocodile Farm
Hartbeespoort Crocodile Farm’s mission is to assist in the conservation of South African reptiles through education.
The establishment offers guided tours of the extensive collection of protected reptiles, as well as the opportunity to pet tarantulas and handle reptiles.
For the more adventurous, the farm offers Africa’s first Nile Crocodile Zip-Line, an adrenaline-fuelled opportunity to fly or zipline over crocodiles as they watch from below.
Not for the faint of heart, of course.
Chameleon Village and Craft Market
Enjoy the vibrance and ambience of a traditional African market less than an hour’s drive from most of the surrounding big cities, or stop by at one of the nearby restaurants or curio shops.
There’s always something to be discovered.
Hartbeespoort Elephant Sanctuary
The Hartbeespoort Elephant Sanctuary offers visitors to the area the opportunity to get to know African elephants with a wide range of elephant experiences, like elephant back riding.
It also offers accommodation, so you can make a day/night of the experience.
The facility’s dedicated staff are committed to the use of positive reinforcement elephant training methods and as a result, they have only relaxed, happy elephants, so you can rest easy.
If it’s golfing you’re after, you’re in luck.
Hartbeespoort golf options are plentiful; the area is home to a variety of top-class, golf-centric establishments:

Hartbeespoort Watersports
They say, “If you’re looking for things to do in Hartbeespoort, just look towards the water.”
If you haven’t already picked up from the rest of this article, the Hartbeespoort Dam area is the go-to destination for watersports of all kinds.
Jet-skis, tubing, water skiing, wakeboarding, wakeskating, banana-boarding, kneeboarding, you name it, you’ll find it at Hartbeespoort.

Afternoon Sunset Boat Cruises
Afternoon-into-sunset cruises are very popular in the area and they’re easily one of the most fun activities in Hartbeespoort.
Hop aboard one of our catered or self-catered cruises and enjoy the natural beauty of the surrounding vistas from the comfort of one of our luxury vessels, while enjoying delicious food, refreshing cocktails and great company.
For more information on Hartbeespoort Dam cruises, contact Boatersworld, or check out the boating section of this article.
Leopard Lodge Hartbeespoort
If you’re looking to get dignified and have a day of top class dining, visit the Leopard Lodge.
This 248ha property is rich in bird life and resident wildlife includes giraffe, kudu, blesbuck, impala, blue wildebeest, red hartebeest, warthog and zebra.
Leopards, however, are very scarce but have been sighted occasionally, mainly at night.
We do not, however, recommend going on a night expedition to look for one.
Hartbeespoort Canopy Tours
The Magalies Canopy Tour offers a series of breathtaking and nail-biting zipline slides on an aerial cableway that is as scenic as it is terrifying. They take place across a natural gorge, so you can feel like a modern Tarzan-soaring over tree-tops and up against cliff face platforms.
Although the Hartbeespoort Dam area is teeming with wildlife, it’s only after the sun goes down that the real animals come out.
The nightlife scene in Hartbeespoort is severely overlooked, but if you know where to go and what to do in Hartbeespoort at night, you’re liable to have one of the best nights of your life.
Upper Deck Restaurant
Upper Deck Restaurant is renowned for three things: its earth-shatteringly delicious Eisbein specialty dish, its utter dedication to getting only the finest in live South African music performing at the venue every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
It’s an easy, relaxed, family-friendly outdoor environment, which creates the ideal atmosphere for making both new friends and lasting memories.
Find out what’s cooking at Upper deck this weekend.
YOLO Beach Bar Hartbeespoort
Like something out of a movie, YOLO beach bar is a biker’s haven featuring sand, palm trees and an unbeatable ambience, situated right in the very heart of Harties.
YOLO beach bar also prides itself on being a “restaurant for the hungry”, so best build up an appetite before you arrive.
Hartbeespoort Boat Cruises
Boatersworld offers an almost endlessly customisable selection of catered and self-catered Hartbeespoort party boat cruises to add some spice to your stay at Hartbeespoort Dam.
Just as the afternoon cruises are a big deal in the Hartbeespoort Dam area, so too are the night time versions, albeit a lot rowdier, usually. Our Hartbeespoort night cruises are totally safe, so you can relax and soak up the atmosphere without a single worry in the world.

13 Fun things to do in Hartbeespoort and surrounds
Looking for the best things to do in Hartbeespoort? You've come to the right place.
In this age of social media, the Instagrammability of a place is a key factor in deciding on a getaway destination for many people. The Hartbeespoort area boasts Instagram opportunities galore, and it’s proximity to Johannesburg and Pretoria make it an ideal weekend destination.
Meaning “Gateway of the Hartebeest” (a type of antelope), Hartbeespoort is a collection of small resort towns situated around the Hartbeespoort Dam in the North-West province , close to the Gauteng border. Also known as Harties, it was established in the 1920s when construction of the dam began. Schoemansville is the oldest neighbourhood in the area, and was named after Hendrik Schoeman, a General in the Anglo-Boer War, who owned the farm that the dam was built on.
Dominated by the Hartbeespoort Dam, the region is rich in historical, ecological, geological, and paleontological significance, as well as tourist attractions.
13 best things to do in Hartbeespoort
1. aerial cableway hartbeespoort.
Harties Cableway
This is the top rated attraction in the area, according to Tripadvisor and I personally agree, having experienced it. The longest mono cableway in South Africa, it will take you to the top of the ancient Magaliesberg mountains , a World Biosphere Reserve, from where you can enjoy spectacular views of the Hartbeespoort Dam, Magaliesberg and the surrounding areas - en route and at the top.
A walk along the Dassie Loop paved walkway will take you around the mountain top where information boards indicate points of interest. You can also enjoy light meals and refreshments with a view on the mountain. The more adventurous can hike up or down the mountain. The Hartbeespoort Aerial Cableway is one of the best things to do in Harties - and one of the most beautiful cable car experiences in South Africa.
2.Hartbeespoort Dam
Hartbeespoort Dam
The Hartbeespoort Dam was completed in 1925, and spans over 20 km. Fed by the Crocodile and Magalies Rivers and surrounded by the Magaliesberg mountains, it serves as a source of irrigation for the surrounding farms. The Hartbeespoort Dam is the only dam in South Africa with a Roman Triumphal Arch Style wall, which is based on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris . You can park your car near the dam wall crossing and admire the picturesque views. It's one of the best free things to do in Harties. Just remember though, that there is only parking on one side of the wall.
The Hartbeespoort Dam is also a popular water resort area where you can go on boat cruises, jet-skiing, and sailing.

3. French Toast Coffee Cafe
French Toast Coffee Cafe
Visiting the French Toast complex might be the closest you’ll get to France in South Africa, and you don't need a passport for this trip. The French Toast Coffee Cafe was built as part of the set for the movie French Toast in 2015. It is known as Café Alexandre in the movie. Here, you will find a 12.5-metre Eiffel Tower, a lock bridge where you can seal your love and other touches of Paris. The café operates as a restaurant with a Parisian influenced patisserie - and yes, they do serve French Toast. Be warned, it’s very busy on weekends.
4. Van Gaalen Cheese Farm
Van Gaalen Cheese Farm
Van Gaalen is primarily a family-run cheese farm established in 1994. Tours are offered on Wednesdays and Saturdays, when you can see how the cheese is made, and indulge in cheese-tasting. However, the farm also has several hiking and mountain-biking trails extending over 50 properties, and over 100 km. The trails take you along the river, over swing bridges, through bamboo walkways and dense woodlands. Much of it is shaded, making it great for hot days.
5. Chameleon Village
Chameleon Village
Chameleon Village is a sprawling shopping and entertainment area. It has a huge African craft market, several restaurants, kids’ play areas, art galleries, putt-putt and go-karting.
6. Welwitschia Country Market
Welwitschia Country Market
Welwitschia Country Market is an eco-village country market opposite Chameleon Village. It features 40 shops, 3 restaurants and a kids playground. Stalls offers a wide range of goods including clothing, African arts and crafts, books, novelties and curios, leather ware and jewellery. There is live entertainment on weekends.
7. Animal sanctuaries
There are many animal sanctuaries in the area, some more dubious than others. Some of the more reputable ones are Ann van Dyk De Wildt Cheetah and Wildlife Centre, and Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve. Do ensure that you avoid unethical sanctuaries and behaviour such as lion petting.
8. Hot Air Ballooning
Hot air ballooning
There are few more magical experiences than drifting in a hot air balloon as the sun appears over the horizon. The Hartbeespoort Dam and Magaliesberg Mountains provide a spectacular backdrop for hot air balloon flights. As you drift lazily with the wind, enjoying the panoramic views, the early morning serenity and tranquillity is punctuated only by the occasional chirping of birds and the frequent burst of flames into the hot air balloon. We experienced our hot air balloon ride with Bill Harrops .
9. Change your perspective at the Upside Down House
Upside-down House
As the name suggests, the Upside Down House is a house built upside down. The contents of the house including the furniture, which would normally be on the floor, are now over your head, providing great photo opportunities.
10. Cradle of Humankind
Tumulus Building at Maropeng
30 minutes away from Hartbeespoort Dam, the Cradle of Humankind is one of South Africa’s 10 UNESCO World Heritage Sites . Altogether, it contains 15 major fossil sites, of which the Sterkfontein Caves is the most famous. The caves are estimated to be 20 million years old.
11. Bothongo Wondercave
Bothongo Wondercave (cc Bothongo Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve)
The Bothongo Wondercave, located in the Bothongo Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve, was discovered in 1898 by Italian miners. Part of the Cradle of Humankind, it boasts South Africa's 3rd largest chamber, after the Cango Caves in the Garden Route and the Sudwala Caves in Mpumalanga . The entrance includes an 87-step, 45-degree staircase, followed by an 18-meter drop via an elevator. The Wondercave offers guided tours, showcasing its geological history dating back 5-10 million years, and its natural wonders which include formations up to 15 meters, cave pearls, rim stone pools, stalactites, and stalagmites. However, confirm that it is open before you go as the cave may be closed due to rain or other reasons.
12. Hennops Hiking Trails
Hennops Hiking Trail Suspension bridge
Also 30 minutes away from Hartbeespoort Dam, Hennops Hiking Trails are some of the most popular hiking trails in Gauteng. This is an expansive nature reserve with hiking, mountain biking and off-roading trails, as well as a historical background. I wrote about it in detail here.
13. Magaliesberg Canopy Tour
Canopy Tour in Magaliesberg
Just over 30 minutes away from Hartbeespoort Dam, you can go ziplining with Magaliesberg Canopy Tours . This adrenalin-pumping Tarzan and Jane style eco-adventure will take you through the ecology and geology of the second oldest mountain range in the world.
These are just some of the things to do in Hartbeespoort . You can also do horse riding, rock climbing, quad-biking, caving, abseiling, kloofing, fishing, golf, bird watching, river rafting, strawberry-picking and much more. Although it is possible to go there on a day trip, there is so much to do in the area that staying there for a weekend makes more sense, as you can then explore the local attractions in Harties at a more leisurely pace.

- A Day Trip to the Hartbeespoort Dam
- Things to do
Having our whole family in one place is rare, so having everyone in the city this past Christmas was special. So, we decided to make the most of it by doing fun adventures together. We planned to spend the day at Hartbeespoort, a small town about an hour outside Johannesburg. It’s an excellent spot for a day trip or weekend getaway from busy city life.
The plan was to start the day early and be home late to early afternoon. It is always challenging to get everyone out of the house for us. The moms were good to go at the appointed 10 am time, but then the day went downhill. Between a hair appointment, a dash to the pharmacy, some waiting around and a visit to the hardware store, that 10 am start was beyond ambitious. It was a great example of some pitfalls of group travel with family.
Hartbeespoort Dam
The Dam wall was our meeting point in Hartbeespoort, or “Harties” as it’s informally known. You can stop in the available parking just before the dam and walk along the wall to enjoy the views. From there, drive under the Arch, over the wall and through the 56-metre-long tunnel into the town. Unfortunately, we came through the town side of Scott Road, which meant we approached the wall from a different direction. One that had us stuck in an hour-stop-start-long traffic jam.
I’m sure the wait in traffic was no more than 30 minutes, but everyone else in the car recalls the wait as more than an hour. That is because it essentially took all that time to drive 100m. I had already talked up the little photo shoot on the wall, and people in the car were getting grumpier by the minute. As we neared the tunnel, I felt it necessary to temper our understanding of the term “tunnel” because it’s only 56m long, which is fine if you didn’t wait that long to drive through it. Don’t take the route that has you drive through the back end of Scott Road. It will end in tears on a busy day.
Once we made it through the tunnel and across the single, tarmac road over the dam wall, I had the unenviable task of informing everyone that our lunch booking was back the way we came. It got very tense.
The Hartbeesport Dam is an arch-type dam fed by the Crocodile and Magalies rivers. It provides for irrigation through canals to the surrounding agricultural farmland. The dam is a popular destination with many water activities, like cruises, jet skiing, and river rafting on the Crocodile River. Harties is on the slopes of the Magaliesberg mountain, making it an easy stop for walking trails , mountain retreats, and wildlife.
How to get to the Hartbeespoort Dam Wall
Search “Hartebeesport Dam wall” and take the route that passes Lanseria airport and follow the R512 to Scott Road. You can also travel via the R511 to Scott Road through the busy main road. It is a single-lane road, so make allowances for traffic during busy periods when planning your trip.
Hartbeespoort Aerial Cableway
We decided to postpone lunch and do at least one other activity for the day. Our little party was ravenous when we reached the aerial cableway. It had been a long day, and when they saw the queue to the cable, a revolt almost broke out. We bought the tickets and popcorn at the kiosk – a weird but necessary combination. The Hartbeespoort aerial cableway is a 1.2km ride to the top of the Magaliesberg. It opened in 1973 and, after a period of disrepair in the early 2000s, was revamped in 2010. It’s only really come onto my radar in the last few years.
When we arrived, one of my cousins shared that she didn’t like heights and would wait at the bottom. Then, as soon as she agreed to give it a go – the power went out. And although they had a generator kick in after a couple of minutes, nothing quite says, “We have things under control,” like the lights flickering off and bringing the car to a silent standstill while you are still in it. Even worse, when you convinced the one person in your group who was afraid of heights, it would be okay.
The short ride is well worth the drama of the day. It offers panoramic views of the Magaliesberg, Hartbeespoort Dam, and the local farmlands. A walkway along the top has signposts explaining what is visible in the distance. You can see as far as the city line of Johannesburg and Sun City. There are restaurants at the top of the mountain which serve grilled meats, pizza and desserts. Unfortunately, we arrived shortly before their last orders, so we had to look for a spot later in the town.
After traffic, hangry moments and beautiful sceneries, we made it home in one piece and full bellies. I’m already excited for the next time we are together, knowing that the key to a successful group trip is to bring snacks!

History of The Hartbeespoort Aerial Cableway
The first Harties aerial cableway opened in 1973. People loved the panoramic views of the Magaliesberg. Both local and overseas visitors loved visiting the original cableway, and it became a popular paragliding and hang gliding spot. In 2005, the cableway closed because it was in a state of disrepair.
In 2010, Zargodox (Pty) Ltd became the new owners when they purchased the old cableway and started working with a Swiss company, Rowema AG, to renovate it for over two years. They purchased 14 hi-tech cable cars and installed touch-screen technology, newly galvanised cabling, auto cabin spacing, and conveyor programming technology. They tested the cableway for over 500 hours to ensure compliance with the Canadian Standards Association specifications.
On 14 August 2010, the then Minister of Tourism, Marthinus van Schalkwyk re-opened the cableway as a world-class facility. The long cableway is 1,2 km long, and each cable car carries up to six passengers.
In 2012, the Harties Aerial Cableway won the best conference venue award at the North West Provincial Tourism Awards.
Reasons to Take the Hartbeespoort Cableway
The Magalies Mountains is one of the oldest mountains on earth. It is almost 100 times older than Mount Everest, and its rocks show the evidence of the tides which rippled against the shore more than 2,000 million years ago.
The Hartbeespoort cableway is currently the longest mono cableway in South Africa. Upon your arrival at the top of the mountain, you can enjoy amazing views of the Hartbeespoort Dam and Magaliesberg while learning about the surrounding area from the educational placards scattered along a pathway on the mountain. The Magaliesberg is a recognised World Biosphere Reserve.
The staff at the Harties Cableway is friendly and contributed to us having an awesome day!
The Hartbeespoort Aerial Cableway Experience : What Is It Like?
We visited the cableway on a weekday. When we arrived, we bought our tickets at the ticket kiosk and were delighted to find out that I didn’t have to pay since it was my birthday! What a pleasant surprise!
After this, we moved towards the cable car base station, where they took our temperatures and logged our details in their visitors’ book. They also provided hand sanitiser. No people were waiting, and we could immediately get into a cable car. At that point, they sanitised the cable cars at the top and bottom as people departed.
And then our cable car ride up the mountain started. The cable cars were fast, and the entire trip only took a few minutes before we arrived at the top of the base station at the top of the mountain. The mountain did not look that high from the ground level, but it was pretty steep, and we had beautiful views of the Magaliesberg mountain range. While journeying up or at the top of the mountain, you can see agricultural fields, mines and human settlements.
Activities at The Top of The Magaliesberg Mountains
When you disembark at the top station, you can choose from various activities.
- You can walk the Dassie Loop, a 1.2 km paved pathway that takes you around the top of the mountain. There are many plagues at various points of the walk where you can learn more about the surrounding areas you can see from that specific viewpoint. The panoramic views of the beautiful Magaliesberg make the visit worth it! On a clear day, you may be able to see the dome in Johannesburg.
- If you’re hungry or thirsty, you can have a bite or drink with a stunning view.
- If you feel energetic, why not try the Boost n Bounce for only R100 for under 16s or R150 for over 16s. Each session is 5 minutes long.
- You can do a tandem paragliding jump with a qualified instructor.
- Children can enjoy the Kids Zone play area.
- You can find over 300 bird species in the Magaliesberg region, including cape vultures, sunbirds, cuckoos, barbets, black eagles and falcons.
- There are over 130 species of trees among the fungi, grasses, ferns, and flowers on the Magaliesberg.

Six Things to do in Hartbeespoort
Hartbeespoort is a quaint town situated in the North West province of South Africa. It is commonly and affectionately known to locals as “Harties”. Hartbeespoort is located approximately seventy kilometres from Johannesburg and is an easy one hour drive away from the city. It’s a destination that has a variety of activities available and is a buzz on the weekends with many people making the short journey to the town. I’ve put together a list of the six things to do in Hartbesspoort with many of these being absolute must sees.
1. Hartbeespoort Cableway
Your first stop should definitely be the Harties Aerial Cableway. It offers a return cable car ride to the Magaliesburg Mountain. The adventure is not only in the actual cable car ride, which is an exciting experience on its own. Once atop the mountain, you can enjoy scenic views of the Hartbeespoort Dam, the town of Magaliesburg as well as Hartbeespoort itself. Other activities on offer at the top of the mountain include a hiking trail of approximately a kilometre or so, restaurants to relax and digest the breathtaking views, a kids play area and a souvenir shop to purchase a keepsake. Further outdoor activities on offer include mountain biking and paragliding.

Sunglasses, Hat, Sunscreen and a camera for the views
Harties Cableway (Please check out their website for updates as weather may affect the times and prices are subject to change)
Quick Tip: The cable car is in constant motion even when it is time to hop in and hop off so remember to keep this in mind when its your turn. Each cable car accommodates between four to six people.
2. Little Paris
This hidden gem is located on one of the main streets in Hartbeespoort. Little Paris consists amongst other things a clothing boutique, deli, a gift shop and a French styled restaurant. However the main reason it is so popular and for its name is because of the miniature version of the “Eiffel Tower” hidden at the end of a lake which are covered with “lover’s locks”. The entrance to the tower is filled with different coloured locks adorning the railing of the lake. These locks can be purchased on the premises with the sizes varying. Couples can also have their initials engraved on the lock prior to placing them in a favourite spot. You can walk across the little bridge and around the tower enjoying views of the lake. It’s an ideal “Instagram” spot with its photographic and appealing charm.
R511, Hartbeespoort, 0216
Entrance is free for everyone
Monday – Sunday: 08:00 am to 17:00 pm
A pretty outfit and a camera for all your stunning pics
Quick Tip: This place gets exceptionally busy with everyone wanting to take their pictures in front of the tower. So its best to get there early to avoid waiting a long time for your chance to take a photo.
3. French Toast Koffie Kafee
Following on from Little Paris, the cafe located on the premises was specifically built as a set for the movie French Toast and is known as Cafe Alexandre in the movie. It is a definite must try and offers a delicious menu of both sweet and savoury variations of French toast. I would suggest you try their milkshakes on offer, which are delicious. They also have their “milkshake of the day” which differs daily. You will have to ask the waiter what’s available on the day.
Another must have is their croissants, the butter croissants are out of the ordinary and are accompanied by butter, jam, cheese and cream. There are also chocolate croissants which are filled with Belgian chocolate and served with ice-cream.
The staff are friendly and delightful and its a lovely experience. Each table has a little “Eiffel Tower” as a centre piece and the interior of the cafe makes you feel like you are in the depths of Paris. Depending on whether you have a sweet tooth or not, there is something for everyone and its an absolute must have, you won’t regret it.

4. Hartbeespoort Dam
One of the more iconic “landmarks” or attractions is the dam itself. Practically the dam is used primarily for irrigation as well as for both domestic and industrial use. The dam is arched shaped and is situated in the Magaliesburg mountain range. The entryway to the dam is along a curved tunnel. There is no parking allowed at this point of the dam. You will have to park your vehicle in vacant spots across the tunnel from the dam and walk over to this point of dam. At the dam you can take pleasure in the views and snap some pics. There are numerous activities of offer at the dam which include water sports, boat cruises, hikes and a snake and animal park. So there will definitely be something for all.

5. Windmill / Jasmyn Farm Stall
Situated in Meerhof, you will notice a large Dutch Windmill building and this is where you will find the Windmill Restaurant, a Waffle House, Jasmyn Farm Stall and a few other stalls and stores. A must visit here is the waffle house, they create both sweet and savoury waffles and also offer a delectable milkshake topped with a waffle. It’s refreshing and very filling.

Another stop will definitely be Jasmyn Farm Stall, this is a mainly fresh produce store and sells fruit and vegetable at ridiculously low prices. They also have on offer many imported goods so you are sure to find something you like. You will most certainly want to take a picture in front of the iconic building as it makes a gorgeous backdrop. There is also a kids play area so it’s a sure visit for the kids.

Chameleon Village is a destination filled with a variety of family activities. These include a large African craft market, shops, snake and reptile park, lion and tiger park and various restaurants. The craft market offers a wide range of locally made goods where you can find a souvenir for yourself or your family and friends. There are ample parking spots available and it is situated on the main road so its easily accessible. You can easily spend a few hours just at this village before venturing to the other spots on this list.

Hartebeespoort is a small town nestled between the Magaliesberg Mountains and Hartebeespoort Dam in the North West Province of South Africa . It is a resort area, and boy will you know it, drawing a lot of visitors from Pretoria and elsewhere.
Understand [ edit ]
Hartebeespoort is close to the North West Province 's border with Gauteng , within an hour's drive from Pretoria and Johannesburg . It is built around Hartebeespoort Dam and the reservoir of the Crocodile River (Krokodilrivier in Afrikaans), which sadly suffers from eutrophication and water hyacinth issues due to heavy pollution from unsustainable farming methods, mining chemicals, and human wastewater releases from metro areas like Jo'burg and Tshwane.
