What to Keep in Mind

Your questions, answered, why shop with us.

InStyle / Jessica Juliao

There’s no denying the benefits of long-wear makeup, but removing those waterproof mascaras and smudge-proof liners can pose a challenge. To avoid rubbing and pulling at (read: irritating) the delicate skin around your eyes, consider a gentle yet effective makeup remover designed specifically for your eyes. These formulas dissolve makeup, even the most stubborn kind, without bothering your skin.

With so many eye makeup removers available in various forms that range from balms and oils to wipes and water, finding the right one can be overwhelming. To help you pick the best remover for you, we enlisted the help of a handful of testers to individually test 29 of the most popular eye makeup removers. After keeping application, feel, residue, and performance top of mind, the InStyle team determined the 11 best eye makeup removers.

Best Overall

Clinique eye makeup remover.

Ulta Beauty

  • Residue 5 /5
  • Performance 5 /5

This soft gel removes all traces of eye makeup in a gentle swipe.

The formula contains sesame seed oil, which some people can be highly allergic to.

As far as eye makeup removers are concerned, a creamy lotion isn’t usually what comes to mind first. But, after putting this rich formula from Clinique to the test, it’s changed everything we know about eye makeup remover. “Initially, I was a bit worried about putting a cream on my eye since it’s a lot different than what I usually use, but I was amazed,” our tester admits. “It didn’t get in my eyes or cause burning—instead, it made my makeup come right off.” Given its silky texture, our tester was pleased to find that it left her lids feeling soft and moisturized.

One thing to note: The formula contains sesame seed extract, which may trigger a reaction from those who are allergic to various nuts and seeds.

Size: 2.5 fl oz. | Type: Lotion | Ingredients: Sesame seed oil, Algae extract

Best Drugstore

E.l.f cosmetics cleansing balm.

A little bit of this makeup-removing balm goes a long way, so you get the most bang for your buck.

You might need to work it into your skin when removing waterproof mascara and eyeliner.

A luxurious makeup-removing balm doesn’t have to be expensive. Case in point: This cleansing balm from e.l.f. Cosmetics. Our tester, who has tested tons of balms prior to this one, said that it stood apart from the rest. “I loved the feel of this balm on my skin. It didn’t feel harsh, unlike other makeup removers I’ve tried,” she says. “Compared to other balms I’ve used, it required minimal product—which is something I value a lot—and left behind no residue.” Formulated with a blend of nourishing ingredients like hyaluronic acid , ceramides, and peptides, the balm offers deep hydration on top of effective cleansing. “The product effectively took off all of the eyeshadow I was wearing in just a few swipes and I never once felt greasy or slimy,” she explains.

While our tester didn’t have a bad thing to say about the product’s makeup-removing capabilities, reviewers online mentioned that it might take a bit of elbow grease to remove waterproof eyeliner and mascara.

Size: 2 oz. | Type: Balm | Ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, Ceramides, Peptides

Best Splurge

Tata harper makeup removing oil cleanser.

Bloomingdale's

  • Residue 4.5 /5

Containing a blend of botanical ingredients, this luxe cleanser restores balance to the skin while breaking down makeup and buildup.

If you use too much, you might notice some residual oil.

Tata Harper is one of those brands you never stop hearing about. It’s for good reason, we can assure you that. If it wasn’t, celebs like Brooke Shields and Kate Hudson wouldn’t be feeding into the hype. What makes the brand so special is that it’s dedicated to sourcing plant-based ingredients from its own farm in Vermont with the intention of using nature to provide clear, youthful skin. With that said, farm-to-face isn’t cheap, so if you’re going to splurge on a luxury skincare brand , let it be on this one. Not only did it wow our testers, but a little bit goes a long way, so you can get the most out of your money. “I used a tiny amount on my eyelid and was able to easily remove my makeup,” our tester confirms. “It required minimal effort and pressure, too.” The tester also admits that upon first application, he used a little too much and noticed some residual oil. But, next time he tried it, he used significantly less and had no residue left behind.

Size: 4.1 fl oz. | Type: Cleansing oil | Ingredients: Alfalfa, Vitamin A, Squalane

Drunk Elephant Slaai Makeup-Melting Butter Cleanser

This buttery soft balm doubles as an exfoliating cleansing oil that works to remove makeup and grime.

Although it’s due in part to natural ingredients, the balm has a fruity fragrance that can be off putting to some.

There’s no question about it: Drunk Elephant knows skincare. This buttery smooth formula felt incredibly moisturizing, even on my eyes. And, although there’s oil in the formula, it didn’t get into my eyes or make me temporarily blind, which happens to me often since I wear contact lenses.  The brand intends you to use the product on your whole face, either on its own to remove makeup or in conjunction with the exfoliating powder that comes with it. I wouldn’t put the exfoliating powder anywhere near my eyes (that screams a recipe for disaster), but it does work quite nicely when I want to give my skin an extra zhuzh while cleansing.

Plus, the tub itself is pretty large, so even though the price is up there, I know I’ll get a good use out of it. I also love that it comes with a spoon that can be used to dish out the perfect amount of product every time and eliminate any cross-contamination from bacteria or grubby fingers. A quick note: It has a fruit smoothie-like smell everyone may not love.

Size: 3.88 oz. | Type: Balm | Ingredients: Blueberry extract, Kiwi extract, Strawberry extract, Cranberry seed oil, Açai fruit oil, Watermelon seed oil

Best Cleansing Water

Glossier milky oil.

  • Performance 4 /5

This milky oil-meets-micellar water contains comfrey root extract and pro-vitamin B5 to nourish skin after dissolving makeup.

The bottle is an in between size—not very big but not small enough to travel with.

If you hate the idea of slathering an oil or a balm all over your face, try this milky oil from Glossier. The perfectly-proportioned combo of oil and micellar water work together to create a dual-phase formula that dissolves makeup and conditions skin at the same time. The bottle is squeezable, so it’s mess-free, and it can be used either alone or with a cotton pad. “It’s super smooth and doesn’t feel greasy, despite having oil in it,” our tester says. “To my surprise, there’s no residue left behind, and I was able to use the same cotton round for both of my eyes (three swipes per eye).”

Size: 3.4 fl oz. | Type: Micellar water, Oil | Ingredients: Comfrey root extract, Pro-vitamin B5, Castor oil

Caudalie Makeup Removing Cleansing Oil

The luxurious cleansing oil transforms into a hydrating milk that leaves skin silky smooth and makeup-free.

The oil might clog pores if you’re prone to breakouts.

This pampering cleansing oil feels so luxurious it turns your daily cleanse from a chore into a treat. The gentle oil is formulated with four oils—sweet almond, rapeseed, sunflower and castor oil —to condition skin as you cleanse, leaving it silky smooth and product-free. “I usually stay away from oil-based products, but I was surprised to find that this cleanser didn’t feel greasy on the skin,” our tester shares. “After using it, my skin felt fresh with no residue left behind, making it my new holy grail product.”

Size: 5 fl oz. | Type: Cleansing oil | Ingredients: Sweet almond oil, Rapeseed oil, Sunflower oil, Castor oil

Best Bi-Phase

Chanel eye makeup remover.

This bi-phase makeup remover effectively removes all types of makeup, especially heavy, waterproof kinds.

We wish the bottle was larger given the price tag.

Like most things stamped with the coveted Chanel branding, there’s an intentional and meticulous construction behind this formula. Spoiler alert: It’s exceptional. While it dissolves all traces of stubborn makeup as well as any top-performing makeup remover, its skincare benefits are even better. The oil-based formula feels watery but is surprisingly pleasant to work with. “It’s not drippy, and though it contains oil, it didn’t leave behind a greasy or slimy feeling,” says InStyle associate editorial director Shannon Bauer . “It removed every speck of eyeshadow in one swipe. There was no residue left on my eyes after using it and I didn’t feel like I needed to wash it off with a cleanser.”

Almost $40 feels like a lot for a makeup remover, especially one that’s only three ounces. But, given the results during the lab test, our tester would recommend it for lighter makeup days. “It can get off the tough stuff, but for glam looks I would reach for something a little tougher,” she says.

Size: 3.4 fl oz. | Type: Bi-phase liquid | Ingredients: Cornflower and Rose extracts

Marcelle Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover Pads

These pre-soaked makeup remover pads gently clean away makeup and don’t leave eyes red and irritated.

The pads aren’t too moist, so they may dry out over time if you don’t use them fast enough.

If you’re still part of the camp of people who stand by their makeup remover wipes over oils, these gentle pads are right up your alley. “They’re moist without making your face all wet and don’t seep into your eyes,” our tester explains. “It dries on contact and leaves skin feeling smooth instead of sticky.” It only took one swipe per eye to get rid of stubborn eye makeup, which, obviously, is impressive. But, the best part of all is that the tester says “eyelids aren’t red at all” after. Seeing as the pads aren’t overloaded with liquid, they may dry out over time, especially if you don’t use them that often. If that’s the case, you may need to wet them a bit in order to bring them back to life.

Size: 85 wipes | Type: Wipes | Ingredients: Aloe vera

Best for Sensitive Skin

Neutrogena eye makeup remover.

The oil-free formula is particularly gentle on skin and is equally as effective at removing waterproof mascara.

We wish it came in a travel size.

This drugstore staple has been around for decades and continues to be a favorite among supermodels, beauty professionals, and everyday makeup wearers alike. Why? It’s affordable, effective and doesn’t tout any bells and whistles. All you need is a cotton pad and a tiny bit of the dual-phase liquid to lift eye makeup without the need for scrubbing or tugging. “I love that the product is water-based and feels nice on my eyelids,” our tester shares. “Very little is needed to take off all of my makeup, which is huge.” To get the best results, the brand suggests shaking the bottle to break up the formula and then apply it directly to the face. You might notice an immediate calming effect, thanks to soothing aloe and cucumber extracts.

Size: 5.5 fl oz . | Type: Bi-phase liquid | Ingredients: Aloe vera and Cucumber extracts

Best for Sensitive Eyes

Mary kay oil-free eye makeup remover.

This oil-free makeup remover is hypoallergenic and ophthalmologist tested to be safe for contact wearers.

We wish more retailers carried it.

Chances are, at one point or another, you’ve tried one of Mary Kay’s iconic cosmetic products. This eye makeup remover by the brand is our pick for those with sensitive eyes (like contact lens-wearers) because it refreshes skin and lifts makeup from the super sensitive eye area without any stinging or pain. Plus, it was tested by dermatologists and ophthalmologists, who proved it to be suitable for those who wear contacts and those who have skin allergies.

And, even though it’s gentle enough for those with sensitivities, it’s still highly effective. “It does an amazing job of removing makeup—I feel refreshed without any irritation,” our tester says. “I only needed a couple swipes to get rid of all of the makeup I had on; it performed way better than I expected it to.”

Size: 3.75 fl oz. | Type: Bi-phase | Ingredients: Water and Dimethicone

Best Clean Formula

Cetaphil waterproof makeup remover.

The formula is perfect for sensitive skin because it’s fragrance- and oil-free.

The formula needs some shaking before each use.

Anything Cetaphil makes is known for being super gentle, and this makeup remover is no exception. The formula is kind to skin, but doesn’t back down against waterproof pigments. The result: Calm, relaxed skin without a trace of makeup. Because it has a micellar water-y feel with a slightly oily texture, it feels conditioning yet doesn’t leave behind that annoying oily residue. Plus, it contains aloe vera, ginseng, and green tea botanicals to soothe skin along the way. “The product seamlessly removed shadow from my eyelids without seeping into my eyes and causing discomfort or irritation,” the tester notes. “It took off most of my makeup in just one swipe, no pressure or tugging required.”

Size: 6 fl oz. | Type: Bi-phase liquid | Ingredients: Aloe vera, Ginseng, Green tea botanicals

  • Type: Makeup removers come in different forms—from wipes, oils, and cleansing balms to micellar water and bi-phase solutions. According to cosmetic chemist Julie Pefferman , they’re all effective but differ only in ingredients. “Oil cleansers are largely oil, and micellar water or bi-phase solutions contain mostly water. Both are effective at removing makeup, but with added ingredients like glycol and a surfactant, the cleansing powers are amplified,” she explains. Balms contain a lot of oil but differ from traditional oils because they sit on the skin for a bit longer and usually melt into a milky liquid when they come in contact with water. Wipes she says, are mostly made of water but have “a significant portion of emollients and silicones” to ensure the wipes glide easily over the skin.
  • Skin Type: Choosing the right makeup remover for your skin type is important for optimum results. Oily skin types should look for micellar solutions to draw out impurities and dirt on the skin. Those with dry skin should opt for creamier, oil-based formulas that deliver hydration as they cleanse. Sensitive and mature skin types should look for more mild formulations that are fragrance-free and void of gritty exfoliants.
  • Ingredients: According to board-certified ophthalmologist Diane Hilal-Campo, M.D. , you should avoid using makeup removers containing parabens and sulfates , as well as benzalkonium chloride. This type of preservative is harmful to the ocular surface of the eye and has been found to decrease the production of tears, resulting in dry eye and overall discomfort. “Fragrance—a blanket term for anything that adds scent to a product—should be avoided,” she explains. “Many of these fragrances can be irritating and allergenic.”

What is the best way to remove eye makeup?

To avoid aggravating the skin and to protect the eyes, Dr. Hilal-Campo recommends using light pressure to push the product firmly against the eye (while your eye is closed). “Waiting a few minutes will allow the oils in the makeup remover to break down the makeup,” she says. “Then, gently wipe it away from your eyes and repeat as necessary until all makeup has been fully removed.”

Which eye makeup removers are best for sensitive skin?

Those with sensitive skin and eyes may need to be more careful about the formulas they choose. You’ll want to look for formulas chock full of skin-conditioning ingredients like glycerin and hyaluronic acid while avoiding irritants like alcohol, fragrances, and sulfates. You may also want to avoid makeup wipes if you have ultra-sensitive skin as the rubbing might be aggravating.

What can I do if I get eye makeup remover in my eyes?

Whenever you’re experiencing eye irritation from getting something in your eye, whether it be eye makeup remover or a stray eyelash, the technique is always the same. “Use a sterile eyewash solution—you can buy some at the drugstore—to flush out your eye,” Dr. Hilal-Campo explains. “Use more than you think you need to ensure the offender is fully flushed out.” If you’re still experiencing some redness and inflammation, a cool compress can help relieve any lingering discomfort. Of course, if the discomfort still persists, you should see your eye doctor, she says.

The 11 Best Eye Makeup Removers for Easy Removal

So long, raccoon eyes.

best travel size eye makeup remover

Byrdie / Jessica Juliao

The  Mary Kay Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover   is our winner. It has a lightweight formula that easily removes all traces of makeup without drying the skin or leaving behind a greasy residue. It’s a great option for daily use, and we believe that regardless of your skin type, it’s a great choice. However, if you’re looking for an affordable and accessible option, or you’re hoping to try a cleansing balm formula, we think you’ll love the  e.l.f. Cosmetics Holy Hydration! Makeup Melting Cleansing Balm .

It’s safe to say that one of the worst parts of wearing makeup is having to remove it at the end of the day. It’s a tedious task that we’re often tempted to skip—even though we’ve been told time and time again that properly removing makeup before bed is essential. Need more motivation to never sleep in your makeup ? According to optometrist Janelle Davison, OD , removing eye makeup (specifically mascara and eyeliner ) is essential to maintaining the normal bacteria around the eyelid and eyelash margin. She explains that failing to do so can cause an imbalance of bacteria, which has been linked to several not-so-great conditions like blepharitis, meibomian gland dysfunction, and dry eye disease.

We can’t promise that makeup removers will become your favorite part of your skincare routine, but we can guarantee that using the right eye makeup remover will make the process less painful (literally and figuratively). To narrow down the plethora of options on the market, we put dozens of eye makeup formulas to the test in our lab in NYC. Ahead, we’re sharing the ones that performed the best.

Best Overall

Mary kay oil-free eye makeup remover.

Doesn’t leave residue on the skin

Removes makeup in just a few swipes

Non-irritating in the eye area

Not available at big retailers

Formula: Bi-phase liquid | Cruelty-Free: No

Of all the eye makeup removers we tested, this Mary Kay pick is a favorite. It’s a lightweight, bi-phase liquid that works to gently remove all traces of makeup without stripping the skin or leaving an oily residue behind. All you need to do is shake the bottle to mix the formula, apply it onto a cotton pad, and swipe away your makeup. It doesn’t require a sink, making it a great option if you’re on the go, and we love that it’s suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin. It’s also hypoallergenic, ophthalmologist-tested, and safe for contact lens wearers.

What Our Testers Say

“The eye makeup remover felt so soothing on the skin and did an amazing job at removing makeup. My skin felt refreshed, clean, and hydrated without causing irritation.” —Michelle, product tester

Best Budget

Neutrogena eye makeup remover.

A little bit goes a long way

Classic formula

Accessible at most drugstores

Can leave behind an oily residue

Whether you’re looking for a great option at an affordable price, or you’re traveling and forgot to bring makeup remover (we’ve been there many times), this is a solid option for you. We love that you can snag it at pretty much any drugstore for an affordable price, but the performance makes it stand out. The bi-phase liquid works to dissolve makeup in seconds without drying or irritating the skin in the delicate eye area. It’s also a very potent formula, meaning that a little bit goes a long way—so you won’t have to worry about having to constantly repurchase it. Only a small bit of product is needed to remove makeup thoroughly without leaving behind any residue. It's worth noting, however, that while the formula is oil-free, some people find that the consistency resembles that of a lightweight oil.

Best Splurge

Tata harper makeup removing oil cleanser.

Smooth, luxurious texture

Great blendability

Reviews say the pump dispenser is finicky

Formula: Cleansing Oil | Cruelty-Free: Yes

Cleansing oils can be highly effective when trying to remove heavy makeup. The idea behind this is that oil dissolves oil—meaning that oil-based makeup removers will work to dissolve oil-based makeup. So, if you’re wearing heavy foundation or a face of cream makeup, reaching for a cleansing oil like this one is a great option. This luxe formula is excellent for people with dry skin because it contains nourishing squalane . While it’s not the most convenient or mess-free formula, we love that it doesn’t need to be used in conjunction with a cotton pad, making it a sustainable option.

After applying the product onto his hands and gently massaging it around his eye area, our tester found that it easily dissolved his eyeshadow and mascara. He also noted that a little bit goes a very long way, which is a plus considering its hefty price tag. While we appreciate the beautiful glass bottle it comes in, some online reviewers say that the pump is faulty, so keep that in mind.

Best for Sensitive Eyes

Clinique eye makeup remover.

Leaves eye area feeling moisturized

Gently removes all traces of makeup

Reviewers say it’s not ideal for removing stubborn mascara

Formula: Lotion | Cruelty-Free: No

If you have sensitive eyes, then you know how uncomfortable it can be to get liquid makeup remover in them. That’s why a balm or lotion formula, like this one from Clinique, can be a great alternative because they have thicker formulas that are easier to control. This lotion formula can be applied with your fingertips or a cotton pad, and it works to break down makeup while leaving the skin feeling hydrated. It’s dermatologist- and ophthalmologist-tested, safe for contact lens wearers, and allergy tested.

If you’re like our tester and feel hesitant about using a cream formula around your eyes, hopefully, her experience will reassure you that it’s a great option. She said that it easily removed her eye makeup without creating sticky residue, and she found that the creamy formula was comfortable and non-irritating in the area. She also appreciated that she didn’t need to rub too much to get the formula to work its magic. Our tester found that it effectively removed all of her makeup, but it’s worth noting that some online reviewers say it could do a better job at breaking down stubborn mascara.

“I was a bit worried about putting a cream on my eye since it is very different from what I usually use, but I was amazed! The product came right off and there was absolutely no burning at all.” —Samantha Anderman, product tester

Best Lightweight

Nivea eye make-up remover.

Gets the job done quickly

Removes waterproof mascara

Reviewers say it feels a bit greasy

If you can’t stand the feeling of heavy skin care products, you’ll love this fluid makeup remover. The lightweight formula works to dissolve stubborn makeup—even waterproof mascara—in just a few seconds. Despite its ability to break down waterproof makeup , it’s not overly stripping or harsh on the skin or eyelashes.

Our tester shared that she was able to remove her entire eye makeup look using just two drops of the formula, and she noted that all that was left on her skin was a refreshing feeling—no residue.

Despite the lightweight consistency, some people have said that they find the formula to feel slightly greasy to the touch. If this bothers you, we recommend washing your face after removing your makeup.

Best Soothing

Laura mercier soothing eye makeup remover.

Feels comfortable on the skin

Doesn’t leave residue

Reviewers say it’s not great for removing waterproof mascara

The eye area is sensitive, to begin with, so add in rubbing to get your makeup off, and irritation can be hard to avoid. But with this liquid eye makeup remover, you’ll be able to remove eyeshadow , eyeliner, and mascara without needing to tug at the area. It gets the job done quickly, and the formula is infused with cornflower, which is known for its calming properties.

Our tester found the formula to be easy to work with, residue-free, and soothing on their skin. Plus, tons of online reviewers say it’s non-greasy, gentle, and highly effective. It is worth noting that while it gets incredible reviews, one con we’ve seen is that it could be better at removing waterproof mascara .

Best Hydrating

Glossier milky oil.

Doesn’t leave a greasy residue

Packaging makes for mess-free application

Only comes in one small size

Formula: Bi-phase liquid | Cruelty-Free: Yes

We love a good liquid makeup remover—especially for removing eye makeup—but they can be messy. With this one, the micellar water and lightweight oil formula are housed in a squeezable bottle with a pointed nozzle at the top, which makes dispensing just the right amount of product easy.

Aside from the excellent packaging, we love that it’s a gentle formula containing soothing ingredients, like vitamin B5, and you only need a few drops to fully remove makeup. However, we wish it were more accessible and available at retailers besides Glossier, and it’s also worth mentioning that it only comes in one 100ml size which is pretty small when compared to similar products.

“I was able to use the same cotton round for both eyes and didn't even need to apply more product. It got all of the makeup off after 3 swipes per eye.” —Ellie Hertel, product tester

Best for Oily Skin

Chanel eye makeup remover.

Nice lightweight consistency

Completely removes makeup quickly

Our tester wasn't a fan of the fragrance

Understandably, not everyone will be able or willing to splurge on a luxury eye makeup remover, but if you can, this one is a great option—especially if you have oily skin. People with oily skin often find makeup removers to be overly greasy and although this one does have oil, it’s an incredibly lightweight, water-like consistency. We also love that it’s infused with cornflower extract and rose extract, two ingredients known for their soothing qualities.

Our tester raved about how quickly it removed all of her eye makeup, and she said it has a perfect consistency. “It was a watery formula but not drippy. And though it contains oil, it wasn't greasy or slimy-feeling,” she explained.

What our Testers Say

“This removed every speck of shadow and mascara with one good swipe.” —Shannon Bauer, product tester

e.l.f Cosmetics Cleansing Balm

Soft consistency makes it gentle on the skin

Not overly greasy

Contains polyethylene

Some online reviews noted that they'd appreciate a larger option

Formula: Balm | Cruelty-Free: Yes

Melting off your face of makeup with a creamy cleansing balm is ultra-satisfying—and these types of formulas are also really effective. This one starts as a soft solid and emulsifies into a creamy oil before turning into a milky consistency when mixed with water. It works to gently break down makeup without you needing to tug at the skin. It’s also formulated with hyaluronic acid and ceramides for an added boost of hydration.

Despite the creamy texture, our tester appreciated that it didn’t leave behind an oily residue. She said it effectively removed all of her makeup and was gentle on her delicate eye area. Considering that it delivers on its claims at an affordable price, we can’t recommend this option enough.

Marcelle Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover Pads

Pads are perfectly saturated

Doesn't leave residue

Fragrance-free

Some reviewers feel that the formula is too harsh

Formula: Pads | Cruelty-Free: Yes

Makeup pads and wipes aren’t the most sustainable choice, but they’re a great option when you’re on the go. These small circular pads are soaked in a micellar makeup remover formula that works to dissolve all traces of makeup without over-drying the skin or leaving behind a greasy film.

Our tester explained that the pads are just saturated enough to get the job done without being too wet and dripping into her eyes. With just one pad, she was able to completely remove her makeup. She also appreciated that it left her skin feeling normal—not dry and not coated in oil. We also love that the small container comes with 85 pads, and the formula is fragrance-free and dermatologist-tested.

Caudalie Makeup Removing Cleansing Oil

Removes makeup gently

Packaging is made from 100% recycled plastic

Not great at removing waterproof formulas

Formula: Cleansing Oil | Cruelty-Free: No

If you stick to clean skincare products, this cleansing oil is a great option for you. The soft formula contains a rich blend of sweet almond oil, castor oil, grape seed oil, and sunflower oil to nourish the skin while it dissolves makeup.

It has a rich consistency, but our tester found that it didn’t leave her skin feeling slick or greasy. You can apply the product to your hands and massage it across your face to remove makeup, or you can add it to a cloth or cotton and swipe it across your skin, which was our tester's preferred method of application. Applying it directly to your hands can get a bit messy, but considering that it’s a wash-off product, this isn’t a big concern for us.

One thing to note is that some people find it’s not the most effective for removing waterproof sunscreen and mascara formulas, so keep this in mind if you tend to use waterproof products.

What to Look For in an Eye Makeup Remover

  • Type of formula: The most important thing to look for when trying to find the best eye makeup remover for you is the formula. Eye makeup removers come in several different formats, ranging from wipes and pads to water-based liquids or oils.
  • Type of makeup: If you’re just removing your daily face of makeup and you don’t wear waterproof formulas on a daily basis, most makeup remover formulas will work for you. But if you’re trying to remove waterproof makeup, Colby Smith , a celebrity makeup artist, recommends opting for a cleansing balm or an oil-based liquid. “In order to break down waterproof makeup, you’ll need a remover with oil in it,” he explains. “I love that a balm being a more solid formula makes step one of removal easier and quicker.” If you’re trying to remove stubborn glitter makeup, he suggests using makeup remover wipes or pads.
  • Eye sensitivity: Dr. Davidson says that micellar water formulas are best for people with sensitive eyes. “Micellar water remover is gentle on the skin and does not require rubbing or rinsing, and hypochlorous acid is a naturally produced substance made by our neutrophils to kill invaders of our body, bacteria, fungus, and viruses.” She explains that using these two formulas in combination with each other will work to effectively remove makeup and “maintain the integrity of the normal eyelid flora.”

Harsh rubbing in your eye area can cause irritation as well as damage to your lashes and delicate skin. In order to completely remove makeup without being too abrasive, Dr. Davison suggests gently rubbing the area in circular motions using a soft cloth soaked in a removing solvent. Instead of using a textured washcloth, opt for a soft cotton pad or cloth with a smooth texture.

“My tip for removing glitter is to start with a wipe,” Smith says. “I wrap it around my finger and roll to remove [the glitter]. If you swipe back and forth, glitter will transfer all over your face. Any leftover specks are easily removed with clear tape. Just tap that over the area and it instantly lifts the glitter off!”

For a natural makeup remover option, try an organic oil like the Viva Naturals Sweet Almond Oil ! One reader says, “I use plain almond oil both at home and on the road. Or coconut oil . They dissolve makeup wonderfully.”

These oils typically come in a large tub or jar, so you’ll want to decant them into a smaller, TSA-approved container like these or these . Since the oil is liquid and slick, use a cotton pad to gently wipe the oil on your face.

What should I look for in the best eye makeup removers?

Just like our skin types, the best eye makeup removers aren't one-size-fits-all, so you should look for one that suits your specific needs. Whether you have sensitive eyes or are in the market for an oil-free option, we're betting there's a formula on this list for you.

Should I rub my eyes to remove my makeup?

To avoid unnecessary tugging or pulling on the delicate eye area, let your remover of choice sit on your lid for a few minutes before gently buffing it away with a washcloth or cotton pad. Avoid rubbing—your lashes will thank you.

What are some common types of makeup removers?

  • Cleansing balms: Typically have a hydrating, gel-like consistency that latches onto makeup while being gentle on skin.
  • Dual-phase liquid removers: These makeup removers are usually used with a cotton pad and contain a blend of ingredients that works to break down makeup.
  • Makeup remover tools: For an eco-conscious removal option, makeup removal tools can be used over and over again, some up to 1,000 times.
  • Cleansing towelettes: Similar to a regular makeup remover wipe, some towelettes are specially formulated to remove eye makeup.
  • Micellar water: Tiny micelles work to break down dirt, oil, and makeup while being gentle on sensitive skin and eyes.

Take Our Word for It

Real Simple / Alli Waataja

Wearing eye makeup can be very fun—but removing it is another story entirely. Rather than scrubbing your eyes to remove all lingering traces of shadow, liner, or mascara, you should reach for a reliable eye makeup remover that can gently break down cosmetics without irritating your skin.

"The makeup should gently glide off with no harsh pulling to the sensitive skin in the eye area," says Kasey Spickard, a makeup artist.

We researched the top eye makeup removers on the market, considering product type, key ingredients, and prices to compile a list of the best formulas for every skin type. Plus, we spoke with Spickard for his expert insight on the best ways to remove stubborn eye makeup and what to look for in an eye makeup remover.

Best Overall Eye Makeup Remover

Bioderma h2o micellar water.

It's designed to remove makeup from the entire face, not just the eyes.

It may be too hydrating for oily skin types.

The Bioderma Sensibio H2O Micellar Water removes everything from stubborn mascara to your daily SPF with its gentle yet effective formula. Since it is versatile and optimal for all skin types, this takes our spot for the best overall eye makeup remover.

This formula has the brand's Dermatological Advance Formula that soothes irritation and raises the tolerance threshold of sensitive skin, allowing it to withstand everyday environmental stressors. It is also free from harsh alcohols and uses gentle micellar water to remove every trace of eye makeup. With six sizes available at an affordable price point, the Bioderma Sensibio is a skincare arsenal must-have.

Type: Liquid | Key Ingredients: Micellar water | Sizes: 8.33, 16.7, 16.9, or 28.7 ounces

Best Budget Eye Makeup Remover

Neutrogena eye makeup remover.

A little bit of product goes a long way.

The formula includes alcohol, which might not be suitable for sensitive skin.

The Neutrogena Oil-Free Liquid Eye Makeup Remover is a budget-friendly and efficient formula that gently wipes away eye makeup without leaving behind an oily residue.

We like that the formula includes cucumber and aloe, although individuals with sensitive skin should be cautious as it also contains alcohol. This eye makeup remover is ophthalmologist-tested and dermatologist-developed, making it safe for contact lens wearers.

Type: Liquid | Key Ingredients: Cucumber and aloe | Size: 3.8 or 5.5 ounces

Best Splurge Eye Makeup Remover

La mer the cleansing micellar water.

The formula removes makeup while nourishing the skin.

It's expensive, even for a "splurge pick".

While La Mer is renowned for its skincare products, The Cleansing Micellar Water is a hidden gem worth trying. This formula has the brand's Miracle Broth and sea-derived ingredients that dissolve water-resistant cosmetics without tugging, pulling, or rubbing your eyes. These marine compounds also nourish and hydrate the skin without compromising its barrier.

La Mer's Micellar Water is suitable for all skin types, is cruelty-free, vegan, and free from parabens, phthalates, and SLS. It's definitely a luxury product, but it does offer a generous 6.7-ounce product in recyclable packaging, which is more than most other picks on our list.

Type: Liquid | Key Ingredients: " Miracle Broth" (mix of sea kelp, vitamins, and minerals) and micellar water | Size: 6.7 ounces

Best Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover

Cetaphil waterproof makeup remover.

The formula is gentle and includes no oils or fragrances.

The dispenser can get a bit messy.

The Cetaphil Gentle Waterproof Makeup Remover is our top choice for sensitive skin and eyes, as its effective formula eliminates long-wearing makeup without any oils or fragrances that can leave residue and cause irritation. Key ingredients include aloe, ginseng, and green tea, which hydrate, soothe, and balance the skin. Plus, it contains glycerin for even more moisturizing power, breaking down even extravagant eye looks with just a few swipes.

Type: Liquid | Key Ingredients : Aloe, ginseng, and green tea | Size: 6 ounces

Best Eye Makeup Remover for Waterproof Mascara

La roche-posay respectissime waterproof eye makeup remover.

La Roche-Posay

The ingredient list is minimal and gentle.

It can leave behind a slightly oily residue.

The Respectissime Waterproof Eye Makeup Remover from La-Roche Posay is a reliable choice for effectively removing makeup without unnecessary tugging or pulling, which can exacerbate irritation, under-eye wrinkles , and lash loss. This formula is paraben- and fragrance-free, making it safe for sensitive skin, and it is also dermatologist- and ophthalmologist-tested.

Poloxamer is the powerhouse ingredient in this formula. It breaks down makeup with minimal effort, making this our favorite pick for eliminating waterproof mascara and liner without irritating your eyes.

Type: Liquid | Key Ingredients: Poloxamer | Size: 4.2 ounces

Best Eye Makeup Remover for Mature Skin

Shiseido eye & lip makeup remover.

The formula contains xylitol, a renowned moisturizing ingredient.

This pick contains added fragrances.

For mature skin that requires extra hydration, opt for the Shiseido Instant Eye and Lip Makeup Remover, which is dermatologist- and ophthalmologist-approved and contains xylitol to help retain moisture around the eyes and lips.

The distinctive dropper-style packaging prevents any oversaturation of the product, ensuring efficient makeup removal without irritation or redness. Only a small amount is needed to effortlessly wipe away even stubborn mascara, lip stains, and other makeup.

Type: Liquid | Key Ingredients: Xylitol | Size: 4.2 ounces

Best Eye Makeup Remover for Sensitive Skin

Avene eau thermal gentle eye make-up remover.

Avene Eau Thermale

The gel-like consistency hydrates without tugging at the skin.

The packaging could be improved.

The Avene Gentle Eye Makeup Remover combines makeup removal with skin hydration for refreshed and soothed eyes. The formula contains thermal spring water, known for its soothing properties, and sorbitol to help the skin retain moisture. We like that this unique gel-like formula feels weightless on the skin and doesn't leave behind residue, making it an excellent choice for makeup removal when followed by cleansing.

Type: Liquid | Key Ingredients: Thermal spring water, sorbitol | Size: 4.2 ounces

Best Hydrating Eye Makeup Remover

Typology bi-phase eye-makeup remover.

The formula contains additional nourishing skincare ingredients.

This pick might not be best for oily skin types, as it contains castor oil.

Typology's Bi-Phase Eye-Makeup Remover with 1% Pea Peptides + Castor Oil removes makeup and provides skincare benefits in its multi-function formula.

Castor oil is included for its hydrating and antioxidant properties, while pea peptides strengthen lash cuticles and create lash density over time, according to the brand. Chamomile is also present to soothe sensitive skin, making this pick suitable for sensitive eyes. Plus, this product is cruelty-free, vegan, and 99 percent naturally derived.

Type: Liquid | Key Ingredients: Pea peptide, castor oil, and chamomile | Size: 3.38 ounces

Best Eye Makeup Remover Pads

Garnier micellar eye makeup remover cotton pads.

This product is safe to use with contacts on.

This product is less sustainable, as each application creates single-use waste.

Garnier Micellar Eye Makeup Remover Cotton Pads offer the convenience and effectiveness of micellar water in ready-to-use pads, making it easy to remove eye makeup after a long day or while on the go. Each container contains 100 saturated cloths that are easy to access, so you can toss it in a purse or overnight bag.

These pads contain glycerin, castor oil, and aloe, which soothe and hydrate the delicate skin around your eyes. They are gentle enough for contact lens wearers and individuals with sensitive skin or eyes, and the formula is non-rinse and leaves no residue, making it a straightforward pick for wiping off the day's eye look.

Type: Pads | Key Ingredients: Aloe, castor oil, glycerin | Size: 100 count

Best Eye Makeup Remover Balm

Clinique take the day off cleansing balm.

It's an all-in-one makeup remover that can be used on the entire face.

It's not for people who want a no-rinse option.

This Clinique eye makeup remover is best for people who have dry skin. This product is the more moisturizing (and multifunctional) version of the brand's best-selling Take the Day Off Makeup Remover for Lids, Lashes & Lips as it's designed for full-face makeup removal . In addition to not getting rid of your skin's essential oils, which can happen after applying water-based eye makeup removers, it also contains safflower oil, which is a natural emollient. Emollients work to prevent inflammation and excel at hydrating and smoothing skin because, when applied, they create a barrier that keeps moisture in.

Although a rich balm, this product does not go on greasy. Those with oily skin may instinctively want to back far, far away from this product, but they needn't be worried—it's non-comedogenic, meaning it won't cause breakouts. This product is also fragrance-free and has been tested for allergies, making it ideal for people with sensitive skin. After gently applying the balm, make sure to thoroughly rinse the product off with warm water for optimum results.

Type: Oil-based balm | Size: 3.8 ounces

Our top pick is the Bioderma Sensibio H2O Micellar Water for its simple ingredient list and versatile formula, which works well for all skin types. For those shopping on a budget or who need a travel-friendly option, consider the Garnier Micellar Eye Makeup Remover Cotton Pads .

How to Shop for Eye Makeup Removers Like a Pro

The best eye makeup remover for you is all dependent on your skin type. If you have dry skin, you'll benefit most from an oil-based eye makeup remover, as this type of remover keeps your skin's essential oils intact and adds additional hydration thanks to its moisturizing properties. On the flip side, water-based eye makeup removers are better for people with oily skin who need a product that will help manage the excess oil their skin produces.

If you sit somewhere in between, go with a bi-phase formula or micellar water. These types of eye makeup removers utilize both oil and water to get rid of your makeup, offering a multi-pronged approach that shouldn't elicit significant reactions in your skin. Fragrance-free formulas are always the best option for  people with sensitive skin , as some fragrances can irritate sensitive skin.

Application Type

The two most popular eye makeup remover types are liquids and wipes. Which one you use should be dependent on how much eye makeup you usually wear. Wipes are super convenient because they provide a quick and easy way to remove your eye makeup, which can be a lifesaver when all you want to do at the end of a long day or night is crash in bed.

However, they work best with light eye makeup, such as non-waterproof mascara, a primer, and eye shadow. If you wear heavier eye makeup, such as liquid eyeliner, waterproof mascara, eye shadow, a highlighter, and more, it may take more wipes to get it all off, and test your patience in the process. Plus, wipes result in more waste, so you may decide that a liquid or balm eye makeup remover is better. These types also provide you with more control over how much eye makeup remover you use.

Ingredients

While shopping for your daily eye makeup remover, be sure to check out the ingredient list. We recommend products with minimal ingredients that include hydrating and soothing components like castor oil, peptides, rosewater, aloe, and cucumber, along with humectants such as glycerin or hyaluronic acid for added hydration.

Questions You Might Ask

What is the most gentle way to remove eye makeup.

The simplest and most gentle way to remove eye makeup is with a cotton pad and a gentle sweeping motion. "Hold the cotton pad to the closed eye for 30 seconds to one minute," says makeup artist Kasey Spickard . "You really want to allow the remover to break down the eye makeup."

The skin around your eyes is extremely sensitive, and can become irritated easily when faced with friction. Before you start removing your makeup, make sure to wash your hands to prevent any germs from getting onto your face and eyes. Then, if you're using a liquid, apply your eye makeup remover to a cotton pad. Cotton pads are best because they offer more surface area to apply your remover, as opposed to cotton balls. Also, the strands in cotton balls can come apart and potentially get into your eye if you scrub too hard, which can be very painful.

Avoid pulling or tugging on the skin, which can cause lash loss, skin irritation, and premature signs of aging . Spickard adds that some cleansers might not remove all cosmetics right away. If that's the case, repeat the process until all remaining traces of makeup are gone.

Which eye makeup removers are best for people with sensitive eyes?

"If you find that your skin is particularly sensitive to makeup removers, you can use Vaseline or baby shampoo to help remove eye makeup, as recommended by The American Academy of Ophthalmology," says Spickard.

Similarly, you can speak to your dermatologist or ophthalmologist for their recommendations. Our list contains dermatologist and ophthalmologist-tested products, including picks like the Shiseido Instant Eye and Lip Makeup Remover and the La Roche-Posay Respectissime Waterproof Eye Makeup Remover .

Can you use eye makeup remover on the face?

While you can use eye makeup remover on the entire face, we don't recommend it unless your remover doubles as a general makeup remover. Eye-specific products may contain ingredients that can clog pores on larger areas of the face. If you want a versatile product for your face, look for micellar waters, cleansing oils, or cleansing balms rather than an eye makeup remover.

Nourishing Makeup Removing Oil Cleanser

Best For An Investment

Tata harper nourishing makeup removing oil cleanser, why is it important to have a great makeup remover.

If you aren’t correctly removing your makeup every night before bed, your skin will suffer. “Makeup is an occlusive, meaning it clogs your pores,” says dermatologist Dr. Karan Lal . “If you don’t take off your makeup before going to bed you are allowing bacteria, yeast, and mites to grow on your skin and eyelids. This could result in acne, rosacea, conjunctivitis, and folliculitis.” In addition to preventing acne, a great makeup remover also helps the rest of your skincare work better. “Without a makeup remover in your skincare regimen, you are not properly cleansing your skin, which is how you prep skin for absorbing all the great ingredients in your treatment and moisturizer products,” says Nancy Gannon, Vice President, Education & Field Development at Clinique .

Can you use makeup removers instead of cleansers?

While some makeup removers can help cleanse your skin, we always recommend using an additional cleanser as a second step. “At night, use a makeup remover to dissolve makeup, then a facial cleanser to remove sweat, pollution, dirt, and any excess oil stuck in pores,” says Gannon. “This way you can enjoy clearer, more radiant skin, fewer clogged pores, better absorption of your treatment products, and a smoother makeup application. That’s what we call double cleansing.” This also helps remove any traces of the makeup remover that might still be lingering on the skin and clogging your pores.

Here, find the 10 best eye makeup removers that will make you excited to take your makeup off.

It can be hard to find a product that's both gentle and removes waterproof makeup. This version is oil-free and quickly removes the toughest of mascaras.

For dehydrated skin, typical makeup removers can be drying and irritating. This balm is formulated with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid and peptides. When you rinse off this balm, your skin will feel nourished and moisturized.

These little makeup erasers are genius at perfecting a sharp cat eye, or removing little remnants of mascara from around the eyes. Just snap one end, and the other end fills with product that will erase any makeup traces.

There’s a sense of dread when you look in the mirror after a long day and realize you still have to take your makeup off. Those woes don’t exist when you have a good eye makeup remover handy — one that won’t leave you with irritated lids or take 10 swipes to get all of your eye makeup off.

“When buying a makeup remover, it’s important to consider both your skin type and the type of makeup you are using,” board-certified dermatologist Joshua Zeichner, MD, FAAD tells PEOPLE. In terms of skincare, board-certified dermatologist Jenny Liu, MD, FAAD says she prefers products that are “effective at removing makeup without being too harsh.” For instance, she stays away from “makeup removers like wipes that create a lot of friction on skin” and can cause “potential irritation.”

From a makeup perspective, “[Micellar water] is good to fix little things as I go,” celebrity makeup artist Jeanine Lobell tells PEOPLE. “I use wipes if it’s to take it all off, but when you need precision removal, then the water [is great because] there’s no oil and no residue.” Lobell says it’s much easier to go back in with micellar water and do small touch-ups with a cotton swab, especially if she’s working in a fast-paced environment with clients — some of which include Natalie Portman, Jessica Alba, and Cate Blanchett.

We set out to find the best picks among popular eye makeup removers, letting our testers create a full glam eye look, and then take it off ( tragic ). Looking at qualities like feel, residue, and overall performance, our team found 14 eye makeup removers that most effectively cleaned our testers’ skin without causing upset to the area. The Mary Kay Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover snagged our top spot with its gentle feel and ability to lift away the day’s makeup without effort or fuss.

After a day of glam in the lab, these 14 eye makeup removers were considered the best that PEOPLE Tested.

Best Overall

Mary kay oil-free eye makeup remover.

  • Residue 5 /5
  • Performance 5 /5

Gentle on skin

Removes even waterproof makeup

Doesn’t leave behind a film or residue

It’s bigger than the carry-on limit for travel liquids

When it came to taking off eye makeup, the Mary Kay Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover proved to be a tester favorite. “The eye makeup remover felt so soothing on the skin and did an amazing job removing makeup,” our tester said. “My skin felt refreshed, clean, and hydrated without causing irritation.”

The gentle and oil-free formula makes this a great remover option for all skin types, leaving no greasy residue on the skin. “This makeup remover left no noticeable residue and I would easily be able to apply skincare over it without an issue,” our tester said. The performance proved equally effective — our tester appreciated how well it worked. “It removed my makeup easily and quickly and I only needed a couple of swipes of cotton rounds to fully remove all of the makeup,” they said. “The remover performed so much better than I expected and it’s a product I would most certainly use regularly.”

Our tester said they wouldn’t change a thing about this product, though we noticed at 3.75 fluid ounces, it is bigger than the standard travel size, so it’s not as portable as other options. That being said, it’s decently priced, and removes even the most adhesive makeup like waterproof products without being harsh on your skin. This eye makeup remover is a clear winner.

Best Budget

E.l.f cosmetics cleansing balm.

Budget-friendly

No residue leftover

Hydrates the skin while removing makeup

Not oil-free so might not work for oily skin types

For being a more affordable option, this eye makeup remover from e.l.f. delighted our testers with its gentle formula, overall performance, and lack of residue left on the skin after use. “I loved the feel of the balm on my skin,” said our tester. “It felt calming and not at all harsh on my eyelids, which I feel like some eye makeup removers do.” With ingredients like hyaluronic acid, peptides, and ceramides, this eye makeup remover works to clean your skin without leaving greasy residue behind.

You apply this balm on your face like a mask, lathering up to absorb the makeup, and then wash it away with water. However, our tester observed that they didn’t even use water with it, and when applied on a cotton round, it “effectively took off all the eyeshadow that I had on in only a few swipes.” Our tester loved that there was no leftover residue, which they said “is rare for this type of product.”

Best Splurge

Tata harper makeup removing oil cleanser.

  • Residue 4.5 /5

Effective at removing makeup

Worked well with sensitive skin

No residue unless you use more than the suggested amount

Not super portable

This luxury eye makeup remover from Tata Harper offers a gentle oil formula with alfalfa, vitamin A, and squalane to lift makeup while also nourishing your skin. “This product felt really nice and smooth, and helped remove the eyeshadow with very little pressure,” said our tester, who has sensitive skin when it comes to cleansers. They “had no problems with this product.”

Our tester said because they normally use a thinner cleanser, at first they used too much and saw some residue, but used “significantly less” the second time, and then “had no issue with residue.” And a little goes a long way. “With a tiny amount applied to my eyelid, I was able to easily remove all the eyeshadow and primer,” our tester said.

Size: 4.1oz./ 125mL | Oil-free: No | Type: Oil/liquid

Best for Sensitive Skin

Clinique eye makeup remover.

Gentle on sensitive skin

Left skin smooth and soft

No cons detected during testing

This makeup remover from Clinique treats skin with a gentleness that leaves no redness or irritation in its wake. “The product felt like a nice soft gel,” said our tester. “I was a bit worried about putting a cream on my eye since it is very different from what I usually use, but I was amazed!”

In terms of performance, our tester said, “The product came right off and there was absolutely no burning at all.” They were impressed with the lack of residue after the remover was applied, and how moisturized their eyelids felt after use — leaving the skin with a soft texture. “No color was left at all on my lids and no scrubbing was necessary, just a gentle swipe to remove the eyeshadow,” our tester said. They said they were “super happy” with this product and “wouldn’t change a thing.”

Size: 2.5oz/ 75mL | Oil-free: No | Type: Creamy gel

Best for Dry Skin

Drunk elephant slaai makeup-melting butter cleanser.

Moisturizing formula

Oil formula didn’t leave residue

Comes with a spoon to reduce contamination

Somewhat pricey

Drunk Elephant is known for impeccable skincare products, and this butter cleansing balm is no exception. “It was buttery smooth and felt incredibly moisturizing,” said our tester. “Although there's oil in the formula, it didn't get in my eyes or make me temporarily blind (I wear contacts, so if something gets in them, I can't see until it comes out). I would definitely use this everyday for my whole face as well.”

In terms of performance, this makeup remover “left no residue” on our tester’s skin, and “took makeup off well” while leaving the skin “soft, smooth, and not irritated in the slightest.” Our tester also said they love that “it comes with a spoon to eliminate any cross-contamination or bacteria from grubby fingers.” This product also comes with an exfoliating powder, but that wasn’t part of our testing. “I massaged the oil into my skin and then used a cotton pad to wipe away the pigment,” said our tester, adding that the oil “removed my eye makeup quickly and effectively, with no irritation or residue.”

Size: 3.88 oz. | Oil-free: No | Type: Balm

Best for Oily Skin

Chanel eye makeup remover.

Highly effective at makeup removal

Doesn’t leave oil residue behind

Has a fragrance, which might be a con for some

Chanel brings the touch of designer flair to an eye makeup remover that’s great for those with oily skin. “This product was the perfect consistency,” said our tester. “It was a watery formula, but not drippy, and though it contains oil, it didn’t have a greasy or slimy feeling.”

Our tester loved that this product left “no residue on my eyelids after using,” and that they didn’t feel the need to “wash it off with a cleanser.” The performance of this remover also stood out to our team. “This removed every speck of shadow and mascara with one good swipe,” praised the tester. “I like bi-phase formulas and this one mixes nicely and doesn't feel oily.” In line with other Chanel products, this one is lightly fragranced, which could be a pro for some and a con for others depending on scent preference.

Size: 3.4oz. | Oil-free: No | Type: Liquid

Best for Waterproof Makeup

Clarins instant eye makeup remover.

  • Feel 4.5 /5

Effective at removing even waterproof makeup

No residue left behind

Worked well even when wearing contact lenses

Has a fragrance

When it comes to taking off makeup, this Clarins remover is a cut above. Our tester said they use a waterproof mascara that’s always difficult to take off, yet this remover got the job done. “I often do double cleaning, first with a cleansing balm and then followed up by a cleanser, and even with that sometimes I still have mascara residue on,” said our tester. “This eye makeup remover removed my mascara EASILY.”

In terms of performance, this eye makeup remover scored well across all categories. Our tester said the product felt nice on their skin, leaving it smooth and soft without any residue after use. “It wiped away my dark eyeshadow pretty easily,” they said. The only fault in their opinion was the existence of a scent with this remover. Fragrance could be a pro or con, depending on preference, but for the sensitive skin on the eyelids, it’s usually better to be unscented. That aside, our tester was blown away by how well this eye makeup remover works.

Size: 4.2 fl oz. | Oil-free: No | Type: Liquid

Best Hydrating

Glossier milky oil.

  • Performance 4 /5

Super hydrating

Effectively removed eye makeup

Not oil free, might not work for oily skin

For a little skincare benefit while you’re removing your makeup, try this pick from Glossier. It’s extremely hydrating and leaves the skin feeling super nourished. “This was a super smooth remover,” said our tester. “It didn't feel greasy at all, which is definitely a complaint that I have had in the past with removers.”

Our team was impressed with the feeling of this product, and how effectively it removed makeup. “I was able to use the same cotton round for both eyes and didn't even need to apply more product,” said our tester. “It got all of the makeup off after three swipes per eye.” Given the low price and efficacy of this makeup remover, we agree with our tester who said they were “really pleased with this one.”

Size: 3.4 fl. oz. | Oil-free: No | Type: Oil

Best Soothing

Laura mercier soothing eye makeup remover.

Extremely gentle formula

No leftover residue

Portable size

Laura Mercier brings us this bi-phase formula that’s partially water-based and partially contains soothing oils to help calm irritated skin and reduce redness. It’s also infused with cornflower which is rich with antioxidants and has many skin benefits. “The remover felt smooth and relaxing on my skin,” confirmed our tester.

They appreciated how this eye makeup remover was “easy to use” and didn’t cause issues or “irritate the skin.” This product completely removed the makeup without too much effort, and had “no residue issues” per the tester — meaning it didn’t leave the greasy film on the surface of the skin that some remover products tend to leave behind. And as an added benefit, it’s travel-friendly, given the size.

Size: 3.4 fl. oz./100mL | Oil-free: No | Type: Liquid

Best Lightweight

Nivea eye make-up remover.

Highly effective makeup remover

Feels refreshing on skin

Good price point

Imported from overseas

If you’re looking for an easy remedy to makeup removal that won’t leave you skin feeling tired, greasy, and heavy, the Double Effect eye makeup remover from Nivea should be on your radar. Our tester said this was “the easiest time I’ve ever had taking makeup off in my life. It took two drops and minimal effort to remove.”

They were completely impressed with the performance as well as how it felt, saying the product was “lightweight and refreshing on my skin” and left “no residue.” Our tester said there was nothing they would change about the product, and commented that “Nivea killed it,” but if we had to change one thing, it would be that it’s currently imported from overseas which makes it a less sustainable and accessible product than local options. That said, it’s not expensive and it works really well.

Size: 4.4 fl. oz./ 125mL | Oil-free: No | Type: Liquid

Cetaphil Waterproof Makeup Remover

Effectively removes makeup, even waterproof

Gentle on skin, even sensitive

Includes botanicals to nourish skin

Faint residue left over

Size doesn’t meet carry-on travel requirements

Cetaphil is a favorite for everyday skincare, and this waterproof makeup remover lives up to its reputation. With botanicals like aloe vera, ginseng, and green tea, this product works to nourish the skin while breaking up makeup, even waterproof mascara , and lifting it from the skin. It’s a bi-phase water-based formula that targets dryness, irritation, rough texture, tightness in the skin, and any weaknesses in the surface of the skin.

“This product seamlessly removed the shadow from my eyelid,” said our tester. “It felt really nice on my skin and I did not experience any discomfort or irritation. It took most of the makeup off in one swipe without me having to apply too much pressure or tugging on my skin too much.” It’s also oil-free and fragrance-free, making it a gentle alternative to some makeup removers. Our tester noticed a slight residue after use, saying “This product feels like micellar water with a slightly oily texture to it, and there was just a little bit of residue on my eyelid after using this product.” That said, our tester loved how well it worked and said, “There is nothing that I would change.”

Size: 6 fl. oz./ 177mL | Oil-free: Yes | Type: Liquid

Caudalie Makeup Removing Cleansing Oil

Removes makeup easily

No residue left over

Little goes a long way

Oil formula is a little messier to apply

Oil makeup removers work really effectively because they break up the makeup’s pigment, yet this one doesn’t leave a greasy residue that some oils do. “This product is super soft and felt great on my skin,” said our tester. “I was a little concerned because I typically stay away from oil-based products, but it didn't feel greasy on the skin at all. My eyelids were clean and felt fresh after use.”

Our tester said, “It was supremely easy to remove with a cotton pad. If I was doing a full skincare routine post-makeup, I would easily follow up with my normal routine. It did not burn at all and my eyelid didn't feel greasy after removal either.” They said the manufacturing instructions suggested using your hands to apply the oil, but they found this to be messy and preferred a cotton round. “I've been looking for a good eye makeup remover and this feels like a holy grail product, especially as I'm familiar with and do use other products in this line,” praised our tester. “I didn't know this existed, but I'm so glad I do now!”

Size: 5 fl. oz./150mL | Oil-free: No | Type: Oil

Marcelle Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover Pads

No strong scent

Highly functional for makeup removal

Could potentially dry out over time

These oil-free pads from Marcelle are pre-soaked so you can swipe them right over your eyelid to remove makeup with ease. “The first wipe took off the entirety of my makeup,” said our tester. They described the pads as “just moist enough” to remove product without leaving residue behind. “The product dried quickly, and my eyelid was left feeling smooth, soft, and not sticky,” the tester said.

These pads proved highly effective at makeup removal, and didn’t leave residue, have a strong scent, or cause redness/irritation. Our tester wondered if these pads would dry out over time given that they weren’t overly soaked upon use, but appreciated how easy this remover product was to use. With 85 pads included in this package, it should last you a while, and if you’re worried about them drying out, consider storing the package upside down so the fluids thoroughly soak every pad.

Things to Consider Before Buying Eye Makeup Remover

You should consider your skin type when buying a product for facial skin. The skin around the eyes is extra sensitive, so you’ll want to appease your skin type by using products that won’t cause irritation. “Harsh surfactants can be effective at removing dirt, sebum, and makeup,” says Dr. Liu, who cautions that it can also remove the “skin's natural oil, and thereby can be too harsh and drying.”

For those with dry skin, you might prefer a more hydrating remover like the Drunk Elephant Slaai Makeup-Melting Butter Cleanser , and those with oily skin might consider an oil-free option. Dr. Liu prefers “more gentle cleansers with ingredients that are oil-soluble surfactants (like fatty alcohol and fatty acids) that help to dissolve makeup but also function at nourishing skin at the same time.” Examples could be emollients like oat or almond oil to help soothe and nourish your skin. Also, look for ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and peptides if you want an anti-aging formula .

Remover Type

There are many types of makeup removers — wipes, pads, oils, water-based solutions, and more. So when you’re considering adding a new product to your routine, you should think about which one will work best for your skin type and the kind of makeup you want to remove.

“Oil-based makeup removers may be preferred if you’re using heavy makeup,” says Dr. Zeichner. “Water-based removers might do the job for lighter makeup. Towelettes are quick and easy to use, but don’t often remove makeup fully and can lead to irritation in people who are sensitive.” If you have sensitive skin, the rubbing motion across your lids to take off makeup might be uncomfortable and cause redness, so consider a gentle remover like micellar water — or for instance the Cetaphil Gentle Waterproof Makeup Remover . This is especially important if you consistently wear false lashes . Choose a product that will dissolve lash glue easily without putting more stress on your eyelids and lashes. Those who wear contact lenses might be wary of a water-based product, and might instead try a traditional wipe to remove makeup.

Eye makeup remover is one of those products that spans the gambit in pricing, with some options hitting close to $10, and others approaching $100. The good news is regardless of your budget, there are high-quality eye makeup removers out there that can clean all your makeup off without irritation. It’s worth paying a higher price for an oil or liquid since it will likely last longer than a package of pads or wipes that run the risk of drying out.

Comparing 29 of the best eye makeup removers, our testers put on a full eye look and then took it off to see how well each remover worked. Looking at feel, residue, and overall performance, our team found 14 eye makeup removers that shined above the rest. To start, our testers created a full eyeshadow look, and then tried each makeup remover using either a soaked cotton pad or round or a wipe for non-liquid removers.

They let the makeup remover (via wipe or pad) sit on the eyelid and lashes to help break up the product and then gently swiped it across to remove the makeup. With about five or so passes across each eyelid, the testers determined which removers actually worked, and which ones left residue on the skin and much to be desired. These steps were repeated with a small cotton swab to get into the inner corners of the eye and around the lash line. After the makeup was removed, the testers considered how their skin looked and felt (greasy? clean? irritated?). To determine effectiveness, they compared how long/how many swipes it took to fully remove the makeup with each remover. At the end of the testing session, 14 eye makeup removers proved the best on all fronts, with certain options being better for different skin types and forms of makeup.

It comes down to your preference, and what kind of makeup you’re trying to remove, as well as your skin type. Dr. Liu says she prefers micellar water because “it's way more gentle and less irritating.”

“Micellar technology is a great option for people who are sensitive,” Dr. Zeichner adds. “It’s generally considered to be among the most gentle of the cleansing technologies. Generally speaking, wipes are considered by most experts to be more drying and irritating to the skin than traditional makeup removers. They often lack the hydrating ingredients found in other products that help respect the skin barrier.”

And as Lobell suggests, if you’re taking off a whole face of makeup, wipes might be a more efficient way to go, but for small touch-ups and sensitive areas, a little micellar water is your best bet.

“For people with sensitive skin, stay away from products that contain fragrances,” suggests Dr. Zeichner. “Makeup removers, like traditional cleansers, contain ingredients known as surfactant which are the molecules that actually grab onto and pull away makeup from the skin. In some cases, the surfactant can disrupt the skin barrier, which is why it is important to use gentle products with hydrating ingredients, as not to damage the outer skin layer.”

Keeping this in mind, we selected the Clinique Naturally Gentle Eye Make-Up Remover as best for sensitive skin because it’s 100 percent fragrance-free, and is designed to be gentle on the skin so it won’t cause harsh irritation.

Technically yes, but not as effectively. Cleansers are designed to “cleanse” and as such, they have to have access to your skin. If you have a layer of makeup on top of the skin, the cleanser might remove some of the makeup, but it won’t clean your skin thoroughly and would require a second wash to do so (if the makeup is even gone after one pass, which is unlikely). It’s more efficient to use a makeup remover to remove products like eyeshadow primer , eyeshadow, mascara, heavy foundation, and more, and leave the cleanser to actual cleansing once you’re finished.

Anyone who wears makeup knows that removing it can be the worst part — until you find the right makeup remover. "Makeup removers work on the principle of 'like dissolves like,'" explains GH Beauty Lab chemist Danusia Wnek . For longwear cosmetics and waterproof makeup , "exposing it to water won’t move the formula that much — an oil-based product is needed to remove it, which is why makeup removers work so well at removing stubborn makeup."

That said, there are so many types of makeup removers from cleansing balm to liquids, wipes, pads and micellar waters for skin types from oily and acne-prone to mature, dry skin and sensitive skin . Which ones actually work? To find out, the GH Beauty Lab evaluates makeup removers in a variety of formulas across price points to gauge their efficacy both in the Lab using scientific protocols and on consumers in real life.

How we test makeup removers

line break

GH Beauty Lab scientists evaluate label-masked new makeup removers in the Lab and on 176 testers for both their makeup removal efficacy and cosmetic properties, tallying 12,200 total data points to find the best makeup removers on the market . In the Lab, experts conducted a test to grade how well they removed eyeliner from skin in one swipe and a second test to measure the number of swipes needed for complete removal of the eyeliner. Products that claimed to remove waterproof makeup were tested against waterproof eyeliner formulas. We evaluate their efficacy, thoroughness and speed in removing eyeliner from skin.

Consumer testers also use the makeup removers at home in their routines for a set time period, evaluating them on factors including ease of dispensing, application and rinsing off; texture; scent; perceived effectiveness in removing makeup; whether they caused irritation or breakouts; and the look and feel of skin after use.

Both makeup artists and dermatologists recommend considering your skin type when choosing the right makeup remover for you. "This will play a huge role on how your skin will react to the remover and give you the best results," explains Beck Wainner , a celebrity makeup artist in Nashville, Tennessee.

Here are general guidelines for each skin type from Mara Weinstein Velez, M.D. , Director of Cosmetic and Laser Dermatology at the University of Rochester Medical Center:

  • For oily or acne-prone skin : Try oil-free, non-greasy makeup removers like micellar waters.
  • For mature skin : Choose oil-based, moisturizing formulas that will be gentler on skin.
  • For dry skin : Seek out creamy, oil-based makeup removers or micellar waters, which work for all skin types, she says.
  • For sensitive skin : Look for mild formulations that are hypoallergenic and fragrance-free.
  • For combination skin : Use an oil-based makeup remover, then follow with a foaming facial cleaners, Dr. Weinstein suggests.

Does makeup remover clean your face?

line break

It's important to know that cleansing your skin and removing your makeup are not the same thing . Makeup remover won't give your skin a thorough cleanse, just like a typical face wash won't rid your face of makeup, GH Beauty Lab testing has found. "Face cleansers and makeup removers serve different purposes," Dr. Weinstein explains.

"Makeup removers are effective in removing makeup from the surface of your skin and following with a facial cleanser removes dirt, oil and sweat and cleans the pores ." There are also micellar water-based formulations use a special "micelle" technology that traps and whisks away pigment particles without the use of oil.

What is the best way to remove makeup?

line break

Don't just rub the remover all over your face, which can actually disperse the color even more as opposed to lifting it. Apply the makeup remover to a cotton round, reusable pad or washcloth, "then let it sit for a minute or two before wiping to ensure all make up residue dissolves," Wainner suggests.

After a long shift at work, a night out with friends, or even a low-glam day at home, the last thing you want to do is stand in front of a mirror, wiping away a bomb look, or even worse: scrubbing your skin raw.

Eye makeup remover has come a long way since the years of scrubbing with soap and water. Now there are variations of eye makeup removers for different kinds of makeup, skin, and personal tastes. Eye makeup remover is usually a gel or liquid you can use to protect your skin while removing your makeup. Some people swear by their own special remedies, but baby oil and isopropyl alcohol aren’t for everyone, and a good eye makeup remover can save you time and stress by simplifying your end-of-day self-care.

Have you ever been scrubbing away at your eyeliner and had stinging soap get in your eye? Not only is soap a pain to work with, it’s harsh on your skin, leaves a residue, and sometimes doesn’t even work. Eye makeup remover is designed specifically to break down long-lasting makeup. We may want our makeup to last for hours without smudging or fading, but we also want it to clean up quickly when we’re ready to call it a night.

Eye makeup remover is available in a variety of formulas aimed at breaking down makeup without harming the skin. Alkanes are the most common ingredients, as they help dissolve the makeup. Top 10 Best Eye Makeup Removers 2024

Neutrogena Oil-Free Makeup Remover

Editor’s Rating:

Quick Facts

Key Ingredients: Aloe Vera, Cucumber Extract

Skin Type: Normal

Effectiveness

This remover is highly effective. For regular makeup, it can easily remove a layer in one swipe, cutting down on swab use and scrubbing. Waterproof makeup may need a little more attention, but this remover still gets the job done. Neutrogena Oil-Free Makeup Remover is gentle on the skin but tough on makeup for an easy, end-of-day skin care option.

This eye makeup remover contains aloe vera and cucumber extract to soothe the skin after cleansing. Its oil-free formula avoids over-moisturizing the face or clogging pores, and leaves the eyes feeling conditioned and smooth. The formula is specifically formulated for eye makeup and is a non-irritant to the eyes.

All you need to get started with this remover is a cotton round or towelette. One of the benefits of oil-free eye makeup remover is that you don’t need to use extra products on your face after using it. This makeup uses a silicone formula to achieve the silkiness of an oil-based remover, so you may want to wipe your face with warm water or a damp cloth afterwards.

This remover is ophthalmologist and dermatologist approved to be safe for contact wearers!

  • Neutral formula is compatible with any skin type
  • Aloe vera and cucumber extract keep the skin feeling cool
  • Oil-free formula locks in moisture without clogging pores
  • Ophthalmologist-tested for eye safety
  • Easy clean-up
  • Takes extra effort to remove waterproof eye makeup

Tatcha 2-in-1 Camellia Cleansing Oil

Key Ingredients: Camellia Oil, Uji Green Tea, Okinawa Mozuku Algae, Akita Rice

This eye makeup remover is a step up in both price and quality from our Best Overall Pick , and it earns its position as our premium eye makeup remover. It may be expensive, but it’s effective enough that you won’t need to replace it any time soon. It only takes one pump to remove an entire face of makeup, including heavy-duty mascara, jet-black eyeliner, and waterproof eye makeup.

Perhaps the best thing about this eye makeup remover is that it works to nourish and heal the skin without catering only to one skin type. The camellia oil emulsifies completely, meaning that it will nourish dry skin without lingering on already oily skin. Camellia oil is appreciated by cosmetics gurus for its moisturizing effects and antioxidant activity on multiple skin types. It contains more oleic acid that other botanical oils, and is rich in vitamins A, B, D and E, as well as skin-healing Omegas 3, 6, and 9. A balanced skin biome is serious business, and this makeup remover meets the challenge.

Tatcha’s formula includes uji green tea, Okinawa mozuku algae, and akita rice, which are referred to in Japan as the Hadasei-3 complex, widely loved for their anti-aging benefits. Even better, Tatcha Cleansing Oil is formulated without mineral oil, synthetic fragrances, sulfate detergents, parabens, urea, DEA, TEA or phthalates, meaning that the cleansing action of this oil is entirely natural and won’t strip your skin.

This oil is meant to be applied on dry skin, but to remove the oil itself, you must rinse your face and hands with warm water. Apply one to two pumps and massage into the skin, then either hop in the shower or rinse your face at the sink with warm water. Your face will be fresh and makeup-free.

You may have to rinse your face, but there’s no ethical clean-up involved with this product: this eye makeup remover is cruelty-free and vegan-friendly.

  • Best waterproof eye makeup remover
  • Camellia oil balances out any skin type
  • Hadasei-3 complex offers anti-aging benefits
  • Rich in oleic acid, vitamins, and omegas to nourish the skin
  • Cruelty-free and vegan
  • Must be rinsed off after use

Simple Face Wipes

Extra Ingredients: Plant Extracts

These makeup wipes are tough enough to remove waterproof mascara with a little work, and one wipe is strong enough to take care of makeup on both eyes. They aren’t quite as strong as liquid removers are, but any makeup wipe is going to be less intense than using a cotton ball and remover solution.

The Cleansing Face Wipes offer the strongest formula, followed by Exfoliating Face Wipes. The other two options, oil-balancing and hydrating, are effective, but not quite as tough on waterproof makeup and dark eyeliners.

One of the reasons we love Simple Face Wipes so much is because they give you so many skin care options. These wipes offer hydrating, cleansing, exfoliating, and oil-balancing versions, so you can select the perfect blend for your skin care needs.

For anyone with dry skin, the hydrating wipes will leave your face feeling conditioned and moisturized. If you’re dealing with tough dead skin or clogged pores, the exfoliating wipes are a great option. The cleansing wipes are the strongest for removing makeup, and the oil-balancing wipes can help reset your facial oils after using drying cosmetics or washes.

Simple Face Wipes are also hypoallergenic and all except the exfoliating wipes are great for sensitive skin. They are free of irritating perfumes and scents, and there are options with micellar water for anyone looking to avoid chemical removers.

The draw for any good makeup wipe is how easy they are to use. Keeping a pack in your car, your purse, or next to your bed can make taking care of your skin simple and convenient. These wipes are a great option for frequent travelers, as they can be used on the go, and are generally considered airport safe.

These wipes cannot be flushed, but you can easily dispose of them at home or in a trash can.

  • Wide variety of skin care options
  • Effective on most makeup
  • Travel-safe
  • Not quite as effective as liquid removers

Olay 5-in-1 Deeply Purifying Daily Facials

Key Ingredients: Salicylic Acid, Witch Hazel, Vitamin E

Skin Type: Oily, Combination

Olay’s facial wipes offer deep cleansing action and exfoliation in one product. The wipes lather up nicely and remove even waterproof makeup. One side of the wipe is gently textured, and the other is smooth for a personalized experience based on how much makeup you need to remove. The Deeply Purifying variety offers the most cleansing action, but all Olay 5-in-1 Daily Facial wipes can keep up with most tough makeup.

The Deeply Purifying wipes are ideal for oily and combination skin, but Olay 5-in-1 wipes are also available in hydrating , nourishing , and gentle options so you can find a formula that works with your skin type. Be aware however, that using the wrong wipe for your skin type can lead to serious acne breakouts and sensitive skin.

All their wipes have a smooth and an exfoliating texture on their wipes, so you can remove dead skin and build-up in the pores with the exfoliating side or be gentle with your skin using the smooth side.

Its 5-in-1 capabilities mean it removes makeup, exfoliates the skin with a scrub, tones it to prevent acne and dirt build up, cools the skin like a mask, and cleanses it with salicylic acid. Its claims are a little over the top: these wipes do not offer a premium skin care experience and cannot compete with a full skin care routine that uses separate steps to cleanse, tone, and apply facial masks. However, they are a great all-in-one option if you want to take care of your skin but lack the time or space around the sink.

These wipes are water activated, so you will need a sink, but they offer eye makeup remover and cleansing in one product.

These makeup wipes are soap-free and include a variety of natural ingredients, but they are not guaranteed cruelty-free.

  • Combines the qualities of an eye makeup remover, facial scrub, toner, face mask, and cleanser in one product
  • Several varieties for specific skin types
  • Water-activated lather for a satisfying experience
  • Convenient and low mess
  • Cannot compare with separately using all 5 products
  • May cause breakouts if used with the wrong skin type

Garnier SkinActive Micellar Water

Key Ingredients: Micelles

Garnier SkinActive uses micelle technology to lift makeup from the skin. Micellar water is water with lipid molecules in it that attract the makeup molecules off your skin, lifting them and rinsing them away. Micelle technology is a great way to remove makeup without using harsh or unnatural-feeling chemicals and stripping the skin of vital oils. Garnier SkinActive All-in-One can easily handle most makeup, but it may have some trouble with dark eyeliner. Garnier also sells micellar water designed specifically for waterproof makeup that offers a more intense formula than their all-in-one variety.

Micellar water avoids the drying effect of traditional eye makeup removers. The gentle properties of micellar water are ideal for anyone with sensitive skin or who needs a eye makeup remover that won’t imbalance a skin care routine with extra oil or chemicals. The All-in-1 Micellar Water is gentle and neutral on skin, but Garnier also offers eye makeup removers with a mattifying formula for oily skin or a hydrating formula for dry skin.

Because micellar water doesn’t have an oil or silicon base, you don’t need to rinse your face after removing your makeup. This makes it ideal for late nights when you just want to remove your makeup without mess, or for makeup adjustments on the go. This also makes it perfect for refreshing or touching up only one aspect of your makeup, rather than re-doing your entire face. Simply pour onto a cotton ball, press the remover to your skin for a few seconds, then wipe away—no rubbing or scrubbing required. However, it can leave an oily or “sticky” feeling behind.

Pro-tip: Pour a little micellar water onto a Q-Tip to spot-correct a makeup look if your eyeliner goes off course or your mascara misbehaves.

Garnier SkinActive is made in the USA.

  • Gentle on skin
  • Offered in all-in-one, waterproof, mattifying, and hydrating varieties
  • No oil or silicon in the formula
  • Great for spot-correcting
  • Convenient for out-and-about makeup fixes
  • May not work well on dark eyeliner
  • May leave skin with an oily feeling

Eye Love Moisturizing Makeup Remover

Extra Ingredients: Grapeseed Oil, Jojoba Oil, Tea Tree Oil, Vitamin E

Skin Type: Dry

This eye makeup remover’s strength is less in how effective it is at removing makeup than its gentleness on painful skin, but it is still an effective eye makeup remover. As an oil-based remover, it uses all-natural ingredients to lift makeup particles off the skin without scrubbing. It may seem pricy, but it only takes a few drops on a cotton ball to remove thick layers of makeup.

Where this eye makeup remover shines is in its serious focus on skin care. Dry skin is reactive and prone to inflammation. Both applying makeup and removing it can be painful if the product is too harsh or heavy on your skin. Not only is this remover entirely natural, it also soothes angry skin, and is a great resource for anyone dealing with blepharitis, demodex mites, styes, and dry eyes. It moisturizes and conditions the skin anywhere it is dry or cracked and is infused with Vitamin E to cut down on free radicals and keep the skin youthful and glowing.

This eye makeup remover is both a remover and a conditioner, making it convenient and low mess. The dropper attachment makes it easy to apply the perfect amount to a cotton ball, and as it is all natural, there is no need to rinse with additional products after use.

Ethically and morally, this product is untarnished. It is vegan, cruelty-free, and made by hand in South Carolina with non-GMO ingredients.

  • Provides intense relief for dry eyes
  • Designed specifically to address skin care woes and pain
  • All-natural, vegan, and cruelty-free
  • Uses natural oils for a conditioning effect
  • Not as effective as most other eye makeup removers

Mary Kay Oil-Free Makeup Remover

Key Ingredients: Silicone Solvent and Poloxamer Emollient

Skin Type: Normal, Combination

Mary Kay has a long history of high-quality makeup, and this makeup earns its position as our favorite sensitive skin eye makeup remover. It only takes a few drops to take off a full face of makeup, even waterproof mascara, and its no-frills formula cuts down on the possibility of a bad reaction. This specific remover is quite similar to our Best Overall option, Neutrogena Oil-Free Remover , but offers a more gentle formula to keep the skin balanced.

This eye makeup remover is simple and gentle. To avoid irritating the skin, it sticks to the basics, avoiding potentially irritating fragrances, harsh cleansers, or pore-clogging oils. The silicone base provides a silky texture without the greasy residue of an oil-based remover.

Because of its neutral formula, it’s a great option for anyone with combination skin. The same remover can be used in both the oily T-Zone and dry or flaky areas of the face, and it won’t disrupt your skin’s oil-balance.

This remover will need to be used near a sink. While it isn’t greasy or irritating, you will need to rinse your face after using this remover. You will also need to shake the product well before using so that its biphasic ingredients will mix correctly.

Mary Kay can also be purchased from a distributor; however, when purchasing Mary Kay products from a non-major retailer, you are more at risk of scams.

  • Does not disturb oil-balance on skin
  • Neutral formula is great for combination skin
  • No irritating fragrances
  • Effective at removing waterproof makeup
  • No extra skin care effects
  • Not ideal for on-the-go face care

La Roche-Posay Face Wash

Key Ingredients: Prebiotic Thermal Water, Glycerin, Niacinamide, Ceramide-3

Skin Type: Oily

This eye makeup remover uses prebiotic thermal water and glycerin for a foaming eye makeup remover that removes most makeup without aggravating sensitive, oily skin. It isn’t as powerful as other options on our list and isn’t very effective on waterproof makeup, but it can keep up with Olay’s 5-in-1 wipes at removing makeup.

This remover is at its best when used to balance and protect oily skin. Some eye makeup removers designed for oily skin are designed with the incorrect assumption that oily skin needs products to dry it out. In fact, oily skin is at its healthiest when care is taken to replenish stripped skin and balance the pH. La Roche Posay Face Wash removes excess oil and cleanses the pores of dirt and impurities, then attends to the needs of oily skin by rehydrating the lipids in the skin with Ceramide-3 and locking the pores to seal in moisture.

Pro Tip : Even for oily skin, it’s important to moisturize. Apply a gentle moisturizer after using this face wash to hydrate the skin.

This face wash is best used at the sink or in the shower. Because it is foamy and lathers up, it offers a satisfying and thorough cleansing experience without scrubbing. Take care not to spill water on it, however, as the pump may leak, allowing the face wash to be diluted.

La Roche Posay takes care to avoid harsh chemicals or potentially aggravating ingredients. This face wash is soap-free, sulfate-free, oil-free, fragrance-free, allergy-tested, and paraben-free. Dermatologists have approved it as non-comedogenic, so you don’t have to worry about clogged or blocked pores.

  • Ideal for oily skin
  • Gentle formula free of fragrances, soap, oil, sulfates, and parabens
  • Ceramide-3 replenishes the lipids in the face for balanced skin
  • Its pH-balancing formula prevents acne
  • Less intense remover
  • Pump is poorly designed

Nature Lush Makeup Remover

Key Ingredients: Glycerin (Plant-derived), Cucumber Extract, Aloe Vera, Olive Extract

Skin Type: Normal, Sensitive

This eye makeup remover is effective on basic makeup but may have some difficulty cutting through darker dyes and waterproof makeup. Because it is oil-free and uses natural ingredients, it relies on glycerin to dissolve the makeup.

Pro Tip: Instead of scrubbing, allow the cotton ball to rest on your eyelid for 10 to 15 seconds to more thoroughly dissolve tough makeup.

This all-natural makeup is gently moisturizing and ideal for sensitive skin. It hydrates without adding excess oil to the face, and the cucumber extract and aloe vera cool and soothe irritated or rough skin. It is fragrance-free, cutting down on the risk of an allergic reaction.

This remover doesn’t need to be rinsed after application, making this a great, one-step eye makeup remover. A few drops on a cotton ball will remove most makeup and leave the skin feeling soft and moisturized.

This makeup is derived from entirely natural plant sources and made in Greece. It is free of parabens, paraffin oil, silicone, & mineral oil. However, the price is higher than some other options.

  • Plant-based and natural
  • Gentle on sensitize skin
  • Cucumber extract and aloe vera condition and rejuvenate the skin.
  • Moisturizes without causing oil build-up
  • Not as effective as other removers
  • Not budget-friendly

e.l.f. Makeup Remover Pen

Key Ingredients: Isododecane, Cyclomethicone, Chamomile Extract, Cucumber Extract

Whether you’re a makeup master or new to the game, we’re all bound to make mistakes. This eye makeup remover pen is a great way to sharpen up eyeliner, clean mascara residue, and tighten borders of bright colors. It cuts easily through eye makeup, but you will need to store it upside down and use it sparingly. Don’t try to take off a whole face of makeup with this product.

This remover doesn’t aggravate the skin and includes chamomile and cucumber extract to cool the skin. It’s a great way of correcting makeup without having to put your face through the ordeal of scrubbing and starting over.

Makeup can be reapplied immediately after using this pen, making it great for touching up eye makeup while out and about or for starting out with a clean, polished look.

This eye makeup remover pen is vegan, cruelty-free, and made without phthalates, parabens, nonylphenol, ethoxylates, triclosan, triclocarban, and hydroquinone.

  • Convenient for on the go corrections
  • Great in-process tool
  • Vegan and cruelty-free
  • No clean-up required
  • Only for spot-cleaning

Eye Makeup Remover and You: A Complete Guide

hands holding skin care products

Your concerns are warranted, so we’ve gathered together all the information you need to make an informed choice about your skin care products. Read on to learn about your skin type, how eye makeup remover works, what chemicals to watch out for, and great techniques to get the most out of your eye makeup remover.

When it comes to skin type, you may not think about what kind of skin you have and how that affects your skin care needs. Or, you might have extremely sensitive skin and be deeply concerned about protecting and rejuvenating your skin. Whichever camp you fall into, knowing your skin type can be extremely helpful in both choosing your remover and deciding what other items you may need to supplement with.

Sensitive Skin

Sensitive or reactive skin is usually marked by irritation, frequent breakouts, itchiness, or tightness. If you have sensitive skin, you may find fragrances, harsh chemicals, excessive oils, plastics, parabens, or certain extracts irritants for your skin. Both Mary Kay and Nature Lush are great options for anyone with sensitive skin, and use low-irritant formulas.

You may need to try out many different hypoallergenic formulas to find the right product for you. It may be best to avoid exfoliating products or products that are particularly strong removers, as these may aggravate the skin.

If you have dry skin, it may feel tight, flaky, ashy, or rough to the touch. Generally, it will feel sensitive to the touch, and using products may aggravate it or dry it further.

The best eye makeup removers to use for dry skin will be oil-based and hydrating products that restore stripped oils and seal the pores. Avoid exfoliating varieties or removers with drying ingredients like alcohols or acetate. Removers with glycerin are often quite effective at rehydrating the skin. For severely dry skin, our top pick for dry skin is a great option, and for mildly dry skin, our premium remover is gentle and nourishing without being overly moisturizing.

Oily skin often feels greasy or clogged and may look shiny. The pores on your skin might be large or have blackheads and whiteheads. Counterintuitively, the best way to care for oily skin is to ensure it is properly moisturized and that products balance excess oil without leaving the skin dry. Skin that has been excessively dried will respond by producing more oil to make up for what has been stripped by other products.

The best products for oily skin will clear excess oil and restore moisture to the skin to protect the skin barrier on the face. Our top pick for oily skin is a great cleanser, but options like Simple Face Wipes’ oil balancing variety offers a more neutral solution for mildly oily skin.

Combination Skin

Combination skin is usually oily in the T-Zone—along the forehead and down the center of the face—and dry on other parts of the face. Combination skin with drastic differences may require two different makeup removers if the difference between face zones is extreme, but a neutral option like our Overall Best Remover is effective on mild combination skin.

Skin Care Routines

You don’t have to follow an extensive beauty routine to keep your skin happy and healthy. Makeup remover is a useful way to cleanse the skin and lift makeup without scrubbing, but it can leave the skin feeling unbalanced without proper care. Most of the products in our list are gentle enough to be used without needing restorative care, but for highly reactive skin, extra care can go a long way towards more comfortable, healthy skin.

scientist mixes ingredients in a lab

So, how exactly do makeup removers work? Even sweat and a shower have trouble touching high quality makeup, but a good remover wipes it away easily.

It all comes down to the science of cosmetics. We’ve come a long way from the days of war-paint and berry-derived skin dyes. Now, chemists and dermatologists work together to design makeup that keeps its color, stays beautiful, and doesn’t damage the skin.

Cosmetic Chemistry

In the simplest terms, makeup is kind of like a magnet. Tiny particles are formulated from various chemicals and materials so that, when you place it on your face or eyelashes, the little particles bond to your skin. Like a magnet and metal, these particles prefer to hold onto your skin over other surfaces, like your brush or foam sponge.

Makeup remover is designed to break these bonds. When you wipe makeup remover over your makeup, it either attracts the makeup to itself or breaks the makeup down so that it can’t hold onto your skin and is instead trapped in the liquid remover.

Most of the time, this process is carried out by emulsifying agents that dissolve the makeup particles. Purely oil-based removers are an alternative to this, but they struggle to break down makeup that isn’t oil-based. Most cleansing oils are two-part removers, with both oil and an emulsifier.

Ingredients to Avoid

Unfortunately, some companies use harmful chemicals in their removers, simply because they are better at breaking down makeup. High intensity alcohols can excessively dry the skin, and products like mineral oil can cause break outs.

woman dispensing skin cream

Now that we’ve discussed eye makeup removers and what’s in them, let’s get into some great tips for keeping your skin happy and healthy.

Before You Get Started

Before you reach for your eyeshadow , it’s important to prepare your skin for what’s to come. Invest in a good skin primer and moisturizer to keep the surface of your skin safe from clogged pores, oily paints, and other impurities. Makeup is usually a fine dust or a thick cream, so moisturizing your face provides a protective barrier between your skin and your makeup.

Foundation and setting powder can easily get into the pores and cause breakouts, so moisturizing and priming the skin not only keeps your skin barrier intact but makes it easier to remove your makeup at the end of the day. It also helps keep your foundation from cracking and drying out as the day goes on.

Removing Your Eye Makeup

At the end of the day, you don’t want to have to scrub your makeup off, and it’s never fun to get out of the shower and see that you have raccoon eyes from your mascara. A makeup remover simplifies your cleanup and prevents scrubbing or pulling.

To use eye makeup remover, pour a little bit on a cotton ball or cotton round, and gently rest it on your face. Let it sit for 10 to 15 seconds, then swipe it away for maximum effect. If you’re a regular makeup user, consider investing in reusable cloth remover rounds , for a soft, budget-friendly alternative.

Balancing Your Skin

We’d never recommend a product that harms your skin, but whenever you use any product on your face, you’ll probably need to take care to balance your skin.

Exfoliating products can help remove excess oils and clean the pores. Hydrating creams and infused oils can help keep your skin looking youthful, and face washes can prevent acne. Aloe vera infused creams are a great way of cooling and soothing the skin to lock in moisture.

After using a product, if your face feels tight, consider using a moisturizer. If you feel greasy, or notice a residue, a cleanser might help you feel clean and fresh.

Skin Care Tips and Tricks

Skin care is an important part of feeling confident and comfortable. We’ve found that some of the simplest ways to feel better are by making small adjustments to your everyday routine. Here are a few of our favorite little changes that can produce big results.

  • Get a good night’s sleep
  • Eat plenty of green vegetables
  • Stay hydrated
  • Wash your makeup brushes regularly
  • Wear sunscreen any time you plan to go outside, whether you go to the beach or just on a short walk.
  • Draw out painful, sub-surface acne by resting a hand-towel soaked with hot water on the skin’s surface

Make up brushes with blue and pink powder

Eye makeup removal may seem complicated, but it doesn’t have to be. The endless variety of products and formulas means that there is no shortage of great options for any skin type and makeup user. It’s never been easier to take care of your skin. We hope that this rundown of the top ten eye makeup removers can help you achieve your goal of happy and healthy skin.

The Best Makeup Removers for Sensitive Eyes, According to Experts

By Angela Trakoshis and Sophie Wirt

mac makeup forever and clinique eye makeup removers on pink background

Fact: Removing makeup is oodles less fun than applying it, especially when it involves rubbing your eyelids raw and shedding a few lashes in the process. Nevertheless, everything that goes on must come off, so we consulted the pros who know a thing or two about the eyes and the delicate skin around them to find out what truly works best for taking off the most budge-proof of mascaras.

Surprisingly, micellar water was at the top of the list. This is probably due to the fact that the French-loved cleansers contain no alcohol, and are comprised of only dirt-loving micelle molecules that attach to makeup and debris to break it down, according to New York City-based dermatologist Debra Jaliman , MD.

Along with those, there are also water- and oil-based gentle eye makeup removers to choose from that are highly recommended for those with sensitive eyes and sensitive skin . Read on for the full list of ophthalmologists' and dermatologists' tried-and-true picks that work for all skin types. That said, here are the best eye makeup removers that will demolish even waterproof makeup without taking out your eyes as collateral.

La Roche-Posay Micellar Water Ultra

Ulta Beauty

"Avoid products with harsh astringents, alcohol, or anything that will require a lot of tugging or scrubbing," says Connecticut-based dermatologist Mona Gohara , MD. Her pick is La Roche-Posay Micellar Water, which can be used as a makeup remover for the eyes and face. Bonus: it also doubles as a non-drying toner.

Garnier Fructis

Garnier SkinActive Micellar Cleansing Water

"Cleanse gently!" New York City-based ophthalmologist Ashley Brissette , MD, advises. "The eyelid skin is one of the most delicate areas of the body, and constant pulling can lead to irritation, skin laxity, wrinkles, and loss of lashes." (Yikes.)

Brissette's pick for a gentle clean sweep? Garnier SkinActive Micellar Cleansing Water. Micelles attract dirt like a magnet, which means less manual scrubbing. If you still find yourself tugging, she recommends switching up your makeup for formulas that are easier to remove — meaning, go easy on the waterproof mascara.

CeraVe Comforting Eye Makeup Remover with Hyaluronic Acid square white bottle with green stripe on white background

CeraVe Comforting Eye Makeup Remover with Hyaluronic Acid

CeraVe's Comforting Eye Makeup Remover is made with a cocktail of eye-safe ingredients. The list includes skin-protecting ceramides and hydrating hyaluronic acid. Not to mention, this formula is an oil and water formula, that really works to remove eye makeup.

Neutrogena OilFree Eye Makeup Remover blue bottle with pale gold cap on white background

Neutrogena Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover

"I personally use Neutrogena Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover," says Danielle Trief , MD, an assistant professor of ophthalmology at Columbia University, regarding this drugstore-favorite pick. "It's gentle, has been tested by ophthalmologists, and is relatively cheap." Roger that.

The hardworking formula in Lancôme's Bi-Facil Double-Action Eye Makeup Remover breaks down pigment with ease and never puts up a fight. With a few drops of this on a cotton pad (after a proper shake of the bottle), this pick removes even the most waterproof eye makeup on the market.

Clinique RinseOff Eye Makeup Solvent transparent teal bottle with silver cap on white background

Clinique Rinse-Off Eye Makeup Solvent

If your eyes sting when you remove makeup, Dr. Trief recommends a product that has been tested specifically for the eye. "Often, people will use a general makeup remover or toner on their eyes," she says, "but the composition of these removers might irritate the eye." Clinique's Rinse-Off Eye Makeup Solvent is ophthalmologist-tested for the sensitive eye area, so it's 100 percent sting-free.

Nothing throws a wrench in your skincare routine quite like travel. There are so many elements working against you, from 3.4-ounce liquid limits to that tortuously dry airplane climate . I’m also frequently on the road—I travel at least once a month to host Traveler's Women Who Travel meetups , and I'm in a long-distance relationship—making me a case study for someone who needs a reliable, one-step facial cleansing product.

I first discovered no-rinse cleansing towelettes in college, when the concept of wiping all the grime, dirt, and makeup off my face in one swipe felt primed for my student-level laziness. It began with a Costco-size pack of Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes which my mom, horrified that I would be left to my own devices while studying abroad in Amsterdam , shoved in my backpack on the way to the airport. For the duration of my 4.5-month program, I would kick back in my dorm on the Prinsengracht canal every evening and “wash my face” with those little pre-moistened cloths, blown away that I didn’t need to pad to the shared bathroom to complete my pre-bed routine. It was a revelation.

Fast forward nearly a decade, and I still travel with a pack of no-rinse face wipes. They’re a great alternative to liquid face wash if you’re bringing only a carry-on and are useful for anything from an in-flight refresh on a red-eye to a camping trip where you don’t have access to a sink. Neutrogena’s wipes, which are affordable at $7 for a 25-pack, have always left my face feeling squeaky clean, but a slew of new brands have become popular in recent years, touting more natural ingredient lists and less waste. I decided to test a few and see if any were as good (or better) than my beloved Neutrogena wipes.

RMS Face wipes

RMS Beauty Ultimate Makeup Remover Wipes

RMS Beauty's wipes are made with just one ingredient—organic coconut oil—and each individually-wrapped towelette is fully compostable. They seamlessly removed all of my makeup and the residual oil did the job of a moisturizer (read: one less thing to pack). The downside? As much as I want to love it, coconut oil always feels too greasy, and an hour after using the wipes I returned to the bathroom to wash my face. (The oil also made my wispy bangs feel greasy.) They aren't everyday-practical for my skin type, but I can still see myself using these towelettes on a beach trip —maybe to remove eye makeup before a swim, or any other use-case in which I know water will remove the excess oil.

Bioderma Face wipes

Bioderma Sensibio H2O Wipes

I packed the Bioderma wipes for a long weekend in Los Angeles . These wipes are a follow-up to the French brand's micellar cleansing water (an oil and water solution that acts as a makeup remover, cleanser, and moisturizer) and indeed, they're easier to throw in a carry-on than their bottled counterpart . They have a short ingredient list and are marketed with virtuous buzzwords like "paraben-free," "hypoallergenic," and "biodegradable." My face felt clean after using them but they didn’t remove all of my eye makeup, and by day three of the trip I was using the hotel’s lotion to remove leftover traces of waterproof mascara .

Klorane Face wipes

Klorane Makeup Remover Wipes with Soothing Cornflower

I struck gold with the Klorane wipes—I started using them at home but knew I was hooked when I instinctively threw them in my bag for a long weekend in Fire Island . They worked just as well as my Neutrogena wipes, leaving my face completely clean without any residue. Plus, Klorane is a French-girl staple (enough to win me over), and the “soothing cornflower” recipe reads as a natural alternative: the wipes are fragrance- and sulfate-free, and pH-balanced. They're almost double the cost of Neutrogena's, but I'd gladly pay more for the pared-down ingredient list.

Nest Water-Activated Foaming Cleansing Towelettes

I brought a few samples of these on a girls’ trip to Martinique . My friends and I fell in love with them—they come in refreshing scents like Ocean Mist & Coconut Water and produce water-activated suds that really clean. The problem? After using them, we read online that they're actually for your body, not your face. (Oops.)

The Verdict

In terms of less waste, my face wipe habit is never going to be as sustainable as regular face wash. The RMS wipes, though compostable, are individually packaged in a non-compostable wrapper. The Bioderma and Klorane wipes are both marked as biodegradable, but that doesn’t mean much when you’re tossing them in the regular waste bin (they require living organisms and soil to break down, which isn't the case when surrounded by piles of trash in a landfill). Because there’s so little regulation on how the term biodegradable (and compostable for that matter) is used, it’s generally not a great guideline when choosing the best face wipe.

That said, I’m packing Klorane’s wipes in my bag going forward. I know I need to limit my use of disposable products (we all do), and cleansing towelettes are no exception—but whenever I find myself in need of a low-maintenance face wash, I know these will get the job done. Plus, something about that deep cornflower-blue packaging feels decidedly luxurious.

What is a makeup remover?

Makeup remover cleanses the skin by removing cosmetics, impurities, and buildup. It is available in various forms, including oil cleansers, micellar water, cleansing balms, and wipes, as explained by board-certified dermatologist Dr. Dendy Engelman.

How to choose the best makeup remover for your skin type?

Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Nazanin Saedi explains that the key is to choose a makeup remover based on your skin type. For those with acne-prone or oily skin, she recommends oil-free makeup removers like micellar water. If you have dry skin, she suggests opting for creamy or oil-based makeup removers. For individuals who are older and require gentler products, Dr. Saedi suggests oil-based formulas. Additionally, for individuals with sensitive skin, Dr. Engelman recommends a gentle, fragrance-free oil-based cleanser or makeup cleansing balm to clean the skin of stubborn makeup without stripping natural, protective oils.

What is the difference between a makeup remover and cleanser and face wash?

“In your skincare routine, a makeup remover’s main purpose is to break down the makeup, especially stubborn waterproof makeup, while a cleanser is used following makeup removal to further clean and remove dirt, oil, and impurities from the skin,” says Dr. Engelman. Some products aim to both remove makeup and cleanse, particularly cleansing oils and makeup balms. Typically, double-cleansing is best for removing all your makeup and skin buildup. “I like to use a makeup-removing cleansing balm and follow with a gel-based cleanser to balance my skin’s microbiome,” she adds.

TL;DR: Makeup removers are for removing all forms of makeup, but cleansers, which come in many forms, will help remove sweat, sebum, dirt, and impurities from your skin, says Dr. Saedi.

Are makeup remover wipes bad for your skin?

“Makeup wipes are always an option when you’re in a pinch; however, if you have sensitive skin, they can potentially be harsh and include irritating chemicals and fragrances,” explains Dr. Engleman. They can especially cause irritation if you do not remove the residual ingredients from the skin. Still, makeup wipes are better than not cleansing at all; however, they should not be used frequently in place of a double-cleansing method. “I would recommend using micellar water instead, as it is a non-stripping water that does not need to be rinsed off and is typically gentle on the skin and suitable for sensitive skin,” she says. In addition, makeup wipes are typically single-use products and are non-biodegradable, posing harm to the environment.

The 15 Very Best Makeup Removers

Portrait of Kitty Guo

In this article

  • Best overall
  • Best for dry skin
  • Best for oily skin
  • Best for combination skin
  • Best for sensitive skin
  • Best for waterproof makeup

I wear makeup pretty much daily, and I’m no stranger to the temptation of crawling into bed after a long day without bothering to take it off . But I’m also militant about dragging myself to the bathroom for a double cleanse before hitting the sheets so that my skin can breathe and renew itself while I sleep; not doing so can lead to acne flare-ups, lines and dullness, and even premature aging. So it’s pretty paramount to invest in a good makeup remover.

Perhaps you need one that can cut through full-coverage foundation and long-lasting lipstick without irritating your skin or drying it out. Or maybe waterproof mascara and eyeliner are your primary targets, and a different formulation is in order. Even if you’re a makeup minimalist, you’ll still want something that’s both appropriate for your skin type and effective.

To find the best makeup removers, I spoke to dermatologists and makeup artists who offered suggestions based on skin type as well as makeup type. I’ve also tested plenty on my own to see how they fared against my daily makeup routine — I typically wear a full face, including foundation, eyeliner, mascara — not to mention all the dirt and grime I accumulate while traipsing around the city. I tested each remover at the end of a long day, so they had a pretty tough job ahead of them, and I’ve only included the ones that successfully rose to the challenge. The wipes, gels, creams, and balms below can help you worry less about clogged pores and irritated complexions, all while giving your face a clean slate for the rest of your skin-care routine .

What we’re looking for

Solvent type.

Since the point of removing your makeup is to prevent breakouts and irritation, using a makeup remover with a formula or ingredients that don’t agree with your skin type is pretty counterintuitive. It’s important to pick one that isn’t too harsh or stripping and can remove makeup without exacerbating preexisting conditions or causing new concerns. Makeup removers can either contain oil-based or water-based solvents; according to NYC-based dermatologist Dr. Hadley King , those with dry and sensitive skin should look for an oil-based makeup remover, which won’t strip dry or sensitive skin of natural oils. But if you’re oily or acne-prone, a water-based makeup remover can deliver a deeper clean and manage excess oil.

Makeup type

Remember that “like dissolves like” — a water-based makeup remover will work more effectively on water-based makeup, and an oil-based makeup remover will work more effectively on oil-based makeup. Another factor to keep in mind is how much makeup you wear on a daily basis. If you’re more of a “BB cream and tinted balm” person, you can likely choose a remover that’s fairly light and gentle. If you’re wearing full-coverage, long-lasting foundation, waterproof mascara, and matte liquid lipstick, you’ll want to reach for something more heavy-duty.

Product type

Makeup removers come in multiple forms, including micellar water, cleansers, cleansing balms, and makeup wipes. The one that best suits you not only depends on your skin, but on when and where you plan to take off your makeup. If you’re washing your face at home before bed, a traditional cleanser should work fine. Need something on the go? Wipes might be your best bet.

Best makeup remover overall

Bioderma Sensibio H2O

Solvent type: Water-based | Makeup type: Light-to-medium makeup | Product type: Micellar water

If you only have room for one makeup remover in your bathroom cabinet, I would recommend buying a bottle of micellar water — a mixture of purified water plus a mild concentration of soap or detergent molecules. According to multiple dermatologists and makeup artists I spoke to, it’s suitable for all kinds of skin types — including normal, sensitive, acne-prone, and dry skin — because, as King explains, the micelles in micellar water “draw out impurities without drying out the skin” by clinging to dirt, oil, and makeup and dissolving them while leaving your skin hydrated. Micellar water can therefore be used as “a facial wash, makeup remover, and moisturizer all in one,” she adds, and it’s an excellent everyday option.

While each expert I interviewed had different favorites, this French pharmacy option with a cult following came up the most. Bioderma’s Sensibio micellar water is what what Dr. Lily Talakoub, founder of Derm to Door , uses on her own face: “It’s the only product that can take off my hard-to-remove mascara without losing any precious eyelash hairs.” Talakoub also likes that she isn’t left with that post-wash, dry-and-tight feeling. And dermatologist Dr. Y. Claire Chang at Union Square Laser Dermatology thinks it works well for sensitive skin because it’s alcohol-, fragrance-, and paraben-free on top of being lightweight and non-greasy. One caveat, however: When I used it, the solution felt gentle and hydrating on my dry, sensitive skin, but because it was so gentle, just the micellar water itself wasn’t enough to remove all my makeup. After one pass with a cotton round, I still had eyeliner flakes and traces of foundation left on my face. A second and third pass might’ve done the job, but it was more efficient to just follow up with a face wash to ensure my skin was totally cleansed. But it’s perfect as an initial step to tackle stubborn mascara and eyeliner streaks, and should be enough on its own for those who wear less makeup than me.

Best makeup remover for dry skin

Algenist Genius Ultimate Anti-Aging Melting Cleanser

Solvent type: Oil-based | Makeup type: Heavy makeup | Product type: Cream cleanser

Sarah Lucero , Stila Cosmetics global executive director of creative artistry, loves this Algenist cleanser for people with dry skin . Although it’s a cleanser and not specifically a makeup remover, Lucero notes that it “dissolves all traces of makeup,” including so-called long-lasting and waterproof formulas, while hydrating and improving your skin’s radiance. It’s her personal makeup remover of choice, and she always carries it with her when she’s traveling in dry climates and spending time in hotels: “The air vents dry me out, and this always helps my skin feel and look better,” she says. It’s soap-free, noncomedogenic, and hypoallergenic, and it has also been recommended to us before as the best cleansing oil for dry skin.

Best makeup remover for oily skin

La Roche-Posay Effaclar Micellar Cleansing Water and Makeup Remover for Oily Skin

Solvent type: Water-based | Makeup type: Light makeup | Product type: Micellar water

This La Roche-Posay micellar water was specifically formulated with oily skin in mind. It’s oil-free, so while it removes excess oil on top of the skin, it won’t add any back in. Chang pointed out that it is also hydrating and lightweight, and gently removes makeup, dirt, and oil without stripping the skin or leaving it with a tight or dry feeling. It’s noncomedogenic, so those with mild acne can consider it too.

Best makeup remover for combination skin

iS Clinical Cleansing Complex

Solvent type: Water-based | Makeup type: Light-to-medium makeup | Product type: Gel cleanser

Combination skin means you have certain areas of your face that are dry and others that are oily, so you’ll want a remover that can work for both. Talakoub likes this option that pulls double duty as a cleanser and makeup remover. “This cleanser takes everything off with one swoop, so you don’t have to wash your face twice,” she explains, pointing out that it doesn’t strip the skin the way some products that are specifically designed for oily skin might. And because it contains willow-bark extract, it can simultaneously clean up pores in oily or acne-prone areas.

Best makeup remover for sensitive skin

Cetaphil Gentle Waterproof Makeup Remover

Solvent type: Water-based | Makeup type: Medium-to-heavy makeup | Product type: Liquid cleanser

Drugstore brand Cetaphil is always popular among dermatologists, and their makeup remover is no exception. Chang recommends it because not only is it hypoallergenic and fragrance-free, making it perfect for those with sensitive skin, but it is extra gentle and lightweight. The formula includes “soothing and anti-inflammatory botanicals,” according to Chang, like aloe, green tea, and ginseng, so it won’t cause irritation. Despite how gentle it is, it is still effective because it’s formulated with a very lightweight and nondrying detergent, so you won’t have to scrub to get your makeup off.

Best makeup remover for eczema

Avene XeraCalm A.D Lipid-Replenishing Cleansing Oil

Solvent type: Oil-based | Makeup type: Light-to-medium makeup | Product type: Cleansing oil

If your skin isn’t just easily irritated but “ Über- sensitive,” perhaps prone to eczema or dermatitis, then makeup artist Mary Irwin recommends this Avene cleansing oil, which is approved by the National Eczema Association. It’s even a suitable cleanser for children and infants because it contains nothing but the basics — no extracts, no fancy ingredients, just water, a lightweight detergent, and cleansing oils. “It’s hypoallergenic, fragrance-free, and deeply soothing,” Irwin promises.

Best makeup remover for acne-prone skin

Neutrogena Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover

Solvent type: Water-based | Makeup type: Medium-to-heavy makeup | Product type: Liquid makeup remover

If your skin is specifically acne-prone , not just oily, this oil-free eye-makeup remover promises not to clog pores. “It’s non-greasy and won’t cause breakouts,” says Dr. Malini Fowler , dermatologist at Texas-based Westlake Dermatology. Much like La Roche-Posay’s formula , this makeup remover is oil-free, which makes it particularly effective for acne-prone skin that’s already struggling with excess oil. Chang adds that it’s gentle and lightweight but effectively removes makeup, including waterproof makeup, thanks to its low percentage of alcohol and surfactants. And although it’s technically formulated to remove eye makeup, plenty of online reviewers attest that you can use it for removing foundation and lipstick, too.

Best makeup remover for melanin-rich skin

Eadem Dew Dream Cleansing Balm

Solvent type: Water-based | Makeup type: Medium-to-heavy makeup | Product type: Gel-to-oil cleanser

We pegged Eadem’s Dew Dream cleansing balm as a likely to sell out item when it first launched — and sure enough, it quickly went out of stock (and then racked up a waitlist of more than 2,000 people). Now that it’s finally available again, I’m happy to report that the cleanser more than lives up to the hype. Though labeled a balm, it comes out of the tube more as a translucent jelly, before melting into a milky, opaque oil that smoothly dissolves all traces of makeup, SPF, dirt, and sweat, zero scrubbing required. The formula contains a cocktail of skin-saving ingredients such as tiger grass, moringa, allantoin, and licorice root, which the brand says will help rebuild damaged skin, support cell turnover, and fight hyperpigmentation. That makes it an especially effective cleanser for women of color with melanin-rich skin, who may be more likely to over-exfoliate to address dark spots and melasma.

Best makeup remover for mature skin

Albolene Moisturizing Cleanser

Solvent type: Oil-based | Makeup type: Medium-to-heavy makeup | Product type: Cleansing balm

“Mature skin tends to be dryer, more fragile, and may have more prominent pores or wrinkles where makeup can stick,” explains Dr. Heidi A. Waldorf of Waldorf Dermatology Aesthetics in Nanuet. Waldorf calls Albolene “an oldie but a goodie” since the company has been around for more than a century, and notes that this cleanser has been used by her grandmother (and other grandmothers and great-grandmothers). The cleanser liquifies on the skin to dissolve makeup without scrubbing, she says. “If Vaseline petroleum jelly and Pond’s cold cream had a baby, it would be Albolene.” Waldorf describes it as less thick and greasy than Vaseline while requiring less massaging than Pond’s — once wiped off, any residual cleanser can be left on the skin for extra hydration. She points out that with a short ingredient list that includes mineral oil and petrolatum, the fragrance-free cleanser works for sensitive skin too. Waldorf even keeps a jar of it in the office for times when she has trouble removing a patient’s makeup before a procedure.

Best anti-aging makeup remover

Caviar Jelly Makeup Remover

Solvent type: Water-based | Makeup type: Light-to-medium makeup | Product type: Cleansing jelly

Strip’s Caviar Jelly makeup remover contains nourishing ingredients meant to plump, smooth, and revive aging skin, including a prebiotic-enriched complex derived from rose petals to help minimize fine lines, and vitamin A and pomegranate extract to support the production of collagen and new skin cells. What intrigued me the most, however, was its gloppy jelly texture; this makeup remover has the exact same consistency as raspberry jam, and even comes with a small plastic spoon to scoop out dollops. It’s full of tiny “caviar” beads that burst upon application, delivering an extra boost of moisture, which felt thoroughly delightful when I tested it myself. I found it to be most effective as the first step of a double-cleanse — especially when I was wearing stubborn eye makeup — but my complexion was so glowy and hydrated afterward that my skin felt nearly tacky to the touch.

Best makeup remover for waterproof makeup

Clinique Take the Day Off Makeup Remover for Lids, Lashes & Lips

Solvent type: Water-based | Makeup type: Heavy makeup | Product type: Liquid makeup remover

Waterproof makeup is meant to be tough to remove — but this popular Clinique remover is up to the task. Makeup artist Misha Shahzada rotates her makeup remover depending on her clients’ skin type, but she tends to use this one the most. “It removes everything without irritating the eyes and does not leave a greasy residue,” she says. It’s also a part of makeup artist Hannah Biddle ’s arsenal because it’s suitable for most skin types, is unscented, and can tackle anything from water-resistant mascara to long-lasting liquid eyeliners to budge-proof lipsticks. Just keep in mind: While some of the makeup removers on this list can work as a cleanser, not just a makeup remover, that’s not the case here. Biddle stresses that this formula is just a first step and meant to be used on dry skin before a traditional facial cleanser .

Best makeup-remover balm

Farmacy Green Clean Makeup-Removing Cleansing Balm

Solvent type: Oil-based | Makeup type: Heavy makeup | Product type: Cleansing balm

Out of all the makeup removers I’ve tried, this cleansing balm from Farmacy is my personal favorite. Oil-based formulas tend to work better on the type of makeup I wear than water-based ones, and I like how the balm has a smooth, velvety texture that starts out solid and melts on your face. I also love a good fragrance, and this one is infused with a pleasantly clean, herbal scent (though if you prefer your beauty products to be unscented, this one may not be for you). It requires zero elbow grease; I just massage a small dollop into my skin, rinse it off, and voila — I’m fresh-faced and makeup-free, without the need to use a second cleanser. It’s well-suited for normal, oily, combination, and dry skin, thanks to its ultrahydrating ingredients like sunflower and ginger-root oils that will dissolve even your most stubborn makeup without stripping or drying your skin.

(If you’re looking for an even more luxurious cleansing balm experience, this Eve Lom option was one of the first-ever cleansing balms on the market and boasts a dedicated fan base, according to Waldorf. “It not only worked, but it included an aspect of self-care,” she says. And with a price tag of $80 for just over three ounces, it’s definitely a product for treating yourself.)

Best travel-friendly makeup-remover balm

Tula Makeup Melt Makeup-Removing Balm

As much as I love the Farmacy balm, the full-size container is a bit unwieldy to take with me on the go. When I’m traveling (or just crashing at a friend’s place), I turn to Tula’s Makeup Melt stick. It comes in svelte, compact packaging that slots neatly into my toiletry bag and measures just a bit larger than a tube of lipstick — the product itself twists up just like a lip balm, and a few quick swipes over my eyes and cheeks, plus a splash of water, leaves me makeup-free. The balm contains nourishing ingredients like shea butter and macadamia-seed oil, giving it a rich and creamy texture, and it has a light, pleasant, inoffensive smell. The only downside is the price relative to its size — the cost per ounce for this product is not as generous as the Farmacy balm, but it’s well worth it for the convenience.

Best makeup-remover wipes

Cetaphil Gentle Makeup-Removing Wipes

Solvent type: Water-based | Makeup type: Light-to-medium makeup | Product type: Makeup wipes

Makeup wipes aren’t our top choice; besides the fact that they generate waste, they are more likely to smear dirt and makeup around your face without completely removing it. (For a thorough cleanse, you need to rinse your face with water to wash away any residue.) However, for times where you’re on the go and don’t have ready access to your bathroom cabinet, wipes can be very handy. These extra-gentle Cetaphil wipes are the best for their soft cloth texture — not scratchy or rough at all — and mild formula that doesn’t sting or irritate my sensitive skin. I’ve used them on an airplane before, and they provided a refreshing burst of hydration for my skin during a long flight thanks to soothing ingredients like aloe, green tea, and chamomile. However, I would need to use at least two wipes to ensure all my makeup is gone, and I’ll still aim to wash my face once I have the option.

The Cetaphil wipes also come recommended by Chang, as the ingredients are the same as the liquid Cetaphil remover she highlights above — but on a pre-moistened wipe, they’re much more portable. Plus, they’re noncomedogenic, fragrance-free, and alcohol-free, so they can work for all types of skin. (But if you find that Cetaphil’s wipes are too gentle to really tackle stubborn waterproof makeup, Waldorf swears by these Neutrogena towelettes , which are a bit more robust. She loves how soft and damp they feel and uses them to remove heavy eye and face makeup without scrubbing. And if you’d like a calming nighttime makeup wipe, Ashlee Simpson prefers Neutrogena’s Night Calming towlettes , which she says effectively remove her wing eyeliner and, as a bonus, are lavender-scented.)

Best dissolvable makeup-remover wipes

Fig.1 Micellar Oil Cleansing Wipes

If you love the convenience of makeup wipes but have a hard time stomaching the environmental impact, consider these dissolvable wipes from Fig. 1 Beauty, formulated in partnership with sustainable beauty brand Conserving Beauty . Each wipe is soaked in a micellar oil formula that contains ingredients like nutrient-rich grape-seed oil and hydrating squalane and promises to melt makeup away instantly.

In accordance with the instructions, I opened the sachet with clean, dry hands and swiped it over my face in circular motions. The towel, made from Conserving Beauty’s proprietary “InstaMelt” technology, felt more rough and papery than a soft cotton cloth, but thankfully the fabric immediately soaked up my foundation and eyeliner with no scrubbing required; I followed up with a cleanser and a splash of water to rinse off the oily residue, and my skin was left feeling fresh and clean. Afterward, I held the wipe under the faucet and watched it disintegrate into mush, then into nothing at all — both my makeup and the wipe washed down the drain without a trace.
