This tour is so amazing and so much fun. My entire family enjoyed every second of it. Plus you get some history about the little town of Lexington.

Not something to go to if you are looking for a creepy night of ghost stories fromAaron Mahnke. But if a night of historical ghost stories with the kids is what you are looking for come here! Mark is hysterical and loaded with dad jokes, but able to throw in a few ghost stories that will give you a little faith in something supernatural. Pete seems like a ghost, is very personable and gives the tour a nice flavor. You walk away with an appreciation of Stonewall Jackson and General Lee, and for life over all. They both have a pleasantly twisted vision of the world, which is something any family will appreciate.

Photo of Josh B.

Mark is a fantastic tour guide. Full of dad jokes, quick quips, and a million stories, it's unlike any ghost tour you've ever been on, and will ever be on again, because each night is a different experience. This isn't about "jump scares" which I really appreciate. Think of it as more of a "twisted history" tour. As the the night wore on, he had even more surprises in store. I can't recommend this enough. It'd be especially great for groups or families.

Halloween is a time when imaginations run wild. There are ghost tours to join, pumpkins to pick, haunted houses to scream through, and tall tales aplenty. The Shenandoah Valley is ripe for all the above plus fall family fun if you know where to look.

Ghost Tours

Who doesn’t love a good-natured fright near Halloween? Take a walking tour through some of the Shenandoah Valley’s towns to hear the shadier bits of history … the parts that will make the hair on the back of your neck stand up.

Haunting Tales: Lexington’s Ghost Tour is led by artist and entertainer Mark Cline most nights. Costumed and carrying a lantern, Cline meanders through downtown Lexington telling historic tales. Lexington, VA was established in 1778 and is the final resting place of two Virginia governors, two Confederate generals, and many soldiers. The stories practically jump out of the bricks in Lexington, so check those out, too.

Ghosts of Staunton , VA offers a variety of spooky tours. Choose from Staunton’s Haunted History, Dark Tales and Haunts of the Queen City, Haunted American Hotel, Haunted Depot, or a special Halloween Haunted Depot Spirit Box Tour. With this many options, you may want to line up more than one outing.

Haunted History Ghost Tours of Old Town Winchester , VA is available October 29 and 30 at 6 p.m. The tours will highlight “the mysterious history of Winchester” as you learn about the “restless spirits from the Colonial and Civil War eras.” Indeed, the Shenandoah Valley is a treasure trove of ghost stories.

If you’re not into blood-thirsty “zombies” on parade, you’ll want to avoid the 9 th Annual Front Royal Zombie Walk . They’ll ramble out of Bing Crosby Stadium in Front Royal, VA at 6 p.m. on October 23 to make their way to the Virginia Beer Museum. Thankfully, it’s just a fundraiser for the Humane Society of Warren County and there will be not-so-scary fun, food, and live music to close out the event. Whew.

Haunted Houses

Entirely indoors, American Fright Night at Shenandoah Caverns in Quicksburg, VA is the Shenandoah Valley’s largest haunted house at 40,000 square feet. Wind your way through American Celebration on Parade in a totally different way: in the dark, with the creep factor turned up to 100.

DarkWood Manor is one of the Valley’s best haunted house attractions, and you’ll find it in downtown Luray, VA. Each year offers a different storyline and new characters. This attraction is not advised for children under the age of 10 or those with certain medical conditions. Be sure to read the warning and disclaimer before planning your trip.

Buried Treasure

What does buried treasure have to do with Halloween? Plenty. Ghosts protect their treasure, right? Let’s find some in the Shenandoah Valley.

Beale’s Gold | Bedford, VA In Bedford, immense amounts of gold and silver have been rumored to exist. It’s said that Thomas Beale discovered a mine out west in the 1800s and brought as much as he could carry to Virginia. Amateur and professional treasure hunters have sought the buried treasure with no luck, but we think a pint of Beale’s Gold Helles Lager may be the gold you’re really searching for. It’s known location is Beale’s Beer ; enjoy!

Treasure of Signal Knob | Strasburg, VA Is there gold and silver buried on Signal Knob near Fort Valley? Legend says there is, pointing to Lord William Powell as the burier or such treasure. Stories vary as to where the goods originated – some say he robbed a stagecoach while others suggest the precious metals were discovered with the help of Native Americans in the area. Some even suggest Powell was a counterfeiter and perhaps the gold and silver weren’t real or pure anyway. Hike the Loop Trail

Corn Mazes & Pumpkin Patches

Take a break for family fun this fall with an adventure through a corn maze or a hunt for the perfect pumpkin.

Back Home on the Farm is a working farm in Harrisonburg, VA. The pumpkin patch, corn maze, cow train, and carousel are always a hit. There are many free activities for the kids, including photo props (like a LOVEwork), barnyard minigolf, climbing walls, and more.

Old McDonald’s Pumpkin Patch and Corn Maze in Inwood, WV has giant slides, TWO five-acre corn mazes, hiking trails, a playground, and much more.

Mulberry Hills Farm in Mount Crawford, VA offers a selection of pre-picked pumpkins or you can scour the field for your own. Be sure to take photos at the photo-op spots as well as pet the farm animals. Look for their LOVEwork, too!

The Pumpkin Patch at Hill High Farm in Winchester, VA is a full-day delight with hayrides, a corn maze, and more free fun for the kiddos, too. Venture out to the pumpkin patch to choose your very own to take home.

Orr’s Pumpkin Patch in Martinsburg, WV is a great place for the kids to not only choose their own pumpkin but to also see Spookley the Square Pumpkin, a beloved character from children’s books in which Spookley is shunned by the typical round pumpkins due to his shape. Orr’s Farm Market embraces Spookley the Square Pumpkin as part of National Bullying Prevention Month (October). Spookley will be incorporated throughout the month with a Spookley-Themed Pumpkin Patch, special storybook times, and even a smaller Spookley maze for little ones.

Whichever way you go with your Halloween and October adventures, we hope you have a great time and make fantastic memories.

Haunting Tales of Lexington

Took my family last n May 25, 2019 and had a great time!! I thoroughly enjoyed this tour with Mark!! He kept it interesting and helped point out a lot of historical facts that you will not hear elsewhere!! I think it’s well worth the time and money but if your expecting blood and guts or gory stories than maybe this tour isn’t for you. I give Mark an A and I’m thankful that at least someone in this historic town is offering ghost tours!!

An interesting history lesson of the town, but not scary. Mark is a great storyteller, but we didn't want to hear about his other businesses. Pete was the highlight of our tour. He took time to talk to as many as he could, answering questions, and just being as personable as possible. I'm pretty sure Mark had been drinking. Every time you got close to him, you could smell alcohol. One of my kids mentioned it almost right away. He was also very erratic and kept getting sidetracked, detracting from the tour.

Hello there, I realize the ghost tour is not for everyone and I’m sorry you were disappointed. We clearly point out in our literature, social media and at the beginning of each tour that it is not a scary or “Halloween like” tour. There are a few people who see the words “ghost tour” and assume it is supposed to be similar to a haunted house, however we are a family oriented tour. My tour is more like street theater, humor, illusions, with 8 to 9 ghost stories and the history I mention is an important part of setting up the ghost stories because it’s vital to have some factual events behind them, but that doesn’t make it a “history” tour. I will admit that I am guilty of briefly promoting my other attraction Dinosaur Kingdom II since many people that enjoy the tour also enjoy that. I would like to say that it is hurtful that in this review it was stated, “I’m pretty sure Mark had been drinking”. The big problem here is, I don’t drink at all, I can’t stand the taste of alcohol, don’t do drugs, I work extremely hard and I would never ever EVER compromise the safety my guests on the ghost tour by leading them into streets intoxicated. I commonly take guests who have been drinking before the tour. Perhaps your children smelled the alcohol on them. But please rest assured there has never been, nor will ever be a time that I would drink before working, especially since I have a responsibility to keep my tour safe. I do have very high energy and an “erratic” way about me and can get sidetracked- my ADHD contributes majorly to that. But I’m always very excited (even after 22 years) to still conduct the ghost tour because it is my passion. I always want people to be pleased with my product. Every night I do the tour I always give 110% of everything I’ve got. If you truly feel disappointed with your experience, please send me your address so I can refund your money. But I do ask you please to correct or retract any and all accusations about me drinking alcohol before taking out my tour, because they are simply not true. I do appreciate you coming out and hope that you experienced even a little bit of enjoyment on the tour. PS-Pete was thrilled that he was the star of your review, he is a great guy and a perfect addition to our ghost tour. Take care. –Mark Cline

Usually on a ghost tour, you expect to hear ghost stories. There was mention of a cat's ghost, but that was about it. There were a lot of jokes and a couple magic tricks, but we wanted a GHOST tour. There were no eerie or scary moments at all. The high point was going to the cemetery and seeing the statue there, but still no ghost stories. We did 2 hours of walking and we heard a little history, a lot about Mark's businesses and art, and a few jokes. Very disappointing. At least it was only $15 pp.

This tour was the highlight of our trip! It was a little corny, a little funny, a little ghostly but was worth it. Mark and Pete were hilarious. It wasnt a spooky tour or scary. Just a fun walking tour with ghost stories and sight seeing along the way. For $15/person, it was a great way to spend a Saturday evening. Me and my husband had a great time. Next time we come, we will bring our kids! The only tip i can give is to bring cash. Thats the only payment they accept.

Mark is a great entertainer and he makes this tour a fun and memorable experience. The innovative ways he tells the stories makes this ghost tour stand out from others. After learning about his other business -- Dinosaur Kingdom II in Natural Bridge -- on this tour, I visited with my daughter and enjoyed more of his zany creativity there. If you don't have fun on this tour you may be a ghost yourself. Everyone whose sense of humor is alive and well should enjoy it.

Ghost tour is more informational than scary. If you're hoping to see ghost or be scared it isn't going to happen. It's a tour of where these events happened , stories behind it with a little comedy to keep the young ones involved.
