JetBlue Airways flies to more than 100 destinations across the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean. The airline also recently started flying to some European destinations.

If you're ready to book a flight but don't want to leave your furry friend at home, you're likely wondering: "Does JetBlue allow pets?" In short, yes: The JetBlue pet policy allows you to bring eligible pets.

While many airlines allow travelers to bring pets on board, airline fees and restrictions vary. Let's look at the JetBlue pet policy, the in-cabin pet options and how flying pets with JetBlue compares with other airlines.

JetBlue pet policy

You must follow the airline's policies to bring your pet on a flight. These rules ensure a positive experience for you, your pet, fellow passengers and airline staff.

A maximum of six pets are permitted per JetBlue flight for all passengers, so booking your pet's ticket as soon as possible is best.

You may only bring small dogs or cats on JetBlue flights — no other types of animals are allowed.

The airline charges $125 per pet each way, which is $250 for a round-trip flight. These fees are nonrefundable; however, they become flight credits good for one year if you cancel your flight.

JetBlue TrueBlue loyalty program members earn 300 extra points per flight segment when adding a pet to their booking.

Each passenger may bring up to two pets on flights. However, if you bring a second pet, you must purchase an additional ticket. You'll also need to pay a pet fee for each pet.

The closed pet carrier cannot exceed specific dimensions and must fit under the seat in front of you. 

The combined weight of your pet and its carrier may not exceed 20 pounds.

Pet carriers count as your carry-on item. However, as Blue Basic fares do not include a carry-on bag, those passengers may bring a pet and a small personal item.

While JetBlue flies to more than 100 destinations, pets are not permitted on flights to Trinidad and Tobago, the U.K. or Europe.

Vaccination and documentation requirements vary by state and country. Passengers are required to follow all applicable laws and have necessary documents in hand before traveling with their pets.

If you don't already have a pet carrier, you can buy one through the airline's shopping portal or at the JFK Terminal 5 ticket counter.

JetBlue in-cabin pet options

JetBlue pet policies aim to ensure a good flight for everyone onboard. The airline refers to this as "Travel Petiquette."

Your pet must remain inside its carrier at the airport and during your flight. During takeoff and landing, the pet carrier must remain under the seat in front of you.

For the remainder of the flight, you may hold the carrier in your lap or place it on the seat beside you if you've purchased an extra seat.

If you have a layover and your pet needs to go to the bathroom, some airports have designated pet relief areas where you can let your pet out. Otherwise, you'll need to exit the airport and return through security.

Pets are not allowed in Mint , which is JetBlue's premium cabin experience.

Additionally, passengers cannot bring pets on interline or codeshare bookings with other airlines. However, there is an exception for some American Airlines-operated flights within the U.S.

Final thoughts on the JetBlue pet policy

When you travel on JetBlue, you don't have to leave your pets behind. The JetBlue pets policy allows travelers to bring up to two pets while traveling.

However, the airline has a maximum of six pets per flight. You'll pay a nonrefundable fee of $125 per pet, though JetBlue members will also earn 300 TrueBlue points for each flight segment.

However, your pet cannot fly in Mint or to certain destinations. Therefore, before heading to the airport, research your destination's vaccination and documentation rules and bring your paperwork to show at the ticket counter when checking in.

JetBlue charges a fee of $125 per pet for each direction of your flight. So for a roundtrip flight, you'll pay $250. These fees are nonrefundable. However, if you cancel your flight before departure, the fees will convert to an air-only JetBlue credit. The credit is good for future travel up to one year from the date of issuance.

Yes, you can bring up to two pets on a JetBlue flight. However, your pet carrier must fit under the seat in front of you, and you're limited to one pet per carrier. To bring a second pet, a second seat must be purchased in addition to paying an additional pet fee. A maximum of six pets are allowed per JetBlue flight for all passengers, so book early to ensure room availability.

You can book your JetBlue pet's ticket at JetBlue.com, through the app or by contacting customer service. Their ticket is added to your reservation in the "Extras" section of your reservation. There is a fee of $125 each way per pet.

During check-in, travelers must present their pet’s identification tags and licenses, vaccination records and other relevant health documentation. Since JetBlue flies domestically and to international destinations, research the pet travel requirements of your destination to ensure you don’t run into any problems.

JetBlue Airways Pet Policy Guide [2022]

When you travel with your favorite pet it might get stressful for not just you but your pet as well. This is why it is very important to understand airline policies so that you can ensure that everything goes as smoothly as possible. This guide will help you with just that. 

Read on to find out what rules and regulations you have to observe while traveling on JetBlue with your pet(s), what the fees are, what documentation you need to have in order, and as a bonus, some helpful tips from us.

What is the JetBlue pet policy?

Passengers traveling on JetBlue can bring with them only one small dog or cat as a carry-on. This pet must be in an FAA-approved pet carrier that can be easily fit under the seat in front of you.

It is important to note that JetBlue does not count the remains of your animal as a pet under its guidelines and does not allow remains in any form including cremated remains on-board or as cargo.

What are the fees for carry-on pets?

As mentioned earlier, a small dog or a cat can travel with you in the cabin for a fee of $125 one way.

You have to pay the fees every time you board a JetBlue flight to a destination. This means that if your itinerary has multiple destinations then you will have to pay each time you start a journey to a destination and not just once for a round-trip.

There are also rules and regulations covering the kennel, or container that you carry your pet in, which I have covered in detail in a separate section below.

Important Note: Your pet in a kennel, that you bring into the cabin, counts as your one carry-on item . In addition to the kennel, JetBlue will allow you to bring one personal item onboard the aircraft.

How to avoid JetBlue pet fees

The easiest way to avoid pet fees for Jetblue is to use the right travel rewards credit card . The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card is a great card for all kinds of travel expenses. In addition, as these pet fee expenses you incur during your travels are usually coded as travel, your points can be used to offset airline pet fees.

There are other cards also like the Chase Sapphire Reserve which has a $300 travel credit that can be used on any kind of travel purchase, including pet fees.

Carry-on pet restrictions for domestic travel

If you are traveling to any domestic destination in the US then JetBlue accepts pets on all domestic flights. For Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, however, vaccination documents are required.

Carry-on pet restrictions for international travel

When traveling with pets on JetBlue please make sure to check if your country of origin is not on the list of permanent or temporary restrictions below.

Permanent restriction

As of the publishing date of this article, pets of any kind are NOT allowed on flights to the following destinations according to JetBlue restrictions:

• Trinidad & Taboga. 

High-risk countries

There is a temporary suspension for dogs traveling between July 14, 2021 and January 7, 2022 from countries that the CDC considers high risk for dog rabies .

The only way around this is to obtain advance written approval from the CDC. This CDC Dog Import Permit applies to all carry-on pets, those traveling via cargo, and even service animals.

The following countries are considered High Risk

• Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Côte D’Ivoire (Ivory Coast)

Grand Cayman, Jamaica, and St. Lucia

For the above-mentioned three countries, JetBlue recommends that you start the import process 30 days in advance to prepare your pet for travel. Additionally, you can find information to help you with your pet travel requirements for these three countries below

JetBlue carry-on pet rules and tips

It is important to review the following rules before your travel with your furry friend so just quickly go through them as a checklist.

Cabin restrictions

As mentioned earlier JetBlue allows a total of 6 pets on any given flight in total. This is why you should book your pet for your flight as early as possible to ensure that your pet has been accommodated. You can do this online, on the JetBlue Mobile App, or by contacting JetBlue .

While on-flight your pet carrier must be placed under the seat in front of you during taxi, takeoff, and landing. You can, however, keep the carrier in your lap during the flight. You can purchase an additional seat for your pet, in which case you can place the carrier on that seat.

Try to get a window or an aisle seat for comfort.

Additionally, you cannot book the following seats if you are traveling with pets.

• Emergency exit seats
• Bulkhead seats
• Mint class seats
• Any other seat with restrictions for under-seat stowage

Space, Size, and Weight restrictions

All approved pet carriers must fit under the seat directly in front of you. Since the space under the seat in front varies from aircraft to aircraft, JetBlue recommends a kennel with the following maximum dimensions of 17” L x 12.5” W x 8.5” H. 

In addition, the total weight of both your pet and carrier should not exceed 20 pounds . Both soft-sided and hard-sided carriers are acceptable at JetBlue. Pet carriers may be purchased at a JetBlue ticket counter for $55 (quantities are limited)

Tip: You must make sure that your pet can move around in the carrier you have got for them. Pets can get restless if they do not have enough movement space, especially on long flights. Pick a carrier that has good ventilation on at least 3 sides and must be leak-proof to save yourself from any headaches later.

Counts as a carry-on item

If you are traveling on Blue Basic fare then you cannot bring additional carry-on baggage as your pet carrier counts as the one allowed item. However, you can carry a personal item in addition to your pet carrier. 

Interline/ codeshare bookings

JetBlue does not allow pets on any interline/ codeshare bookings (This means a single booking involving multiple JetBlue and partnership flights).

True Blue members

You can earn 300 extra points per flight whenever you add a pet to your itinerary.

Documentation

Before you travel please ensure that you have all the documentation necessary for the destination you are traveling to. This has been discussed in detail in the Carry-on Pet Restriction section above for both domestic and international travel.

In addition to this, you should always have an ID Tag on the pet and the kennel, a pet license, and proof of vaccinations required.

Sedation/ Tranquilizers

Sedating your animals is not recommended as the effects of pressurized cabins can be unpredictable. Sedation sometimes causes breathing issues with animals as well. In case you have sedated your pet please inform the JetBlue crew before you board your flight.

At the airport

While at the airport your pet must always be inside its carrier unless the airport has an official pet relief area. JetBlue staff can help direct you to a pet relief area if the airport you are at has one. You must make sure the door to the carrier is firmly secured to ensure the pet does not get out.

Make sure you pay the fees and have JetBlue give you confirmation for your pet to travel with you. You can do this by checking in as early as 24 hours before flight online, through the JetBlue app, or at an airport kiosk.

Tip : When you arrive at the airport visit any full-service JetBlue counter or talk to a JetBlue crewmember in the self-service lobby to get a JetPaw bag tag. Attach this tag to your pet’s carrier. 

TSA Security Screening

Before boarding your flight you will need to go through TSA. You will have to present your animal at a TSA security checkpoint as pet carriers are subject to search by the authorities.

You will be asked to remove your pet from the carrier and pass through screening equipment while the carrier is passed through an X-Ray machine. Your pet will never be put through an X-ray machine.

If you cannot take your pet out of its carrier for any reason then it will have to go through a secondary screening including a visual and physical examination by security officials. All this takes time and this is why it is advised to show up early if you are traveling with pets.

Traveling with service animals

At JetBlue, a service animal is specifically defined as a dog that is specifically trained to do work or assist a disabled person.

Legal Warning : It is a Federal crime to make materially false, fictitious, or fraudulent statement entries, or representations knowingly and willfully on the U.S. Department of Transportation Service Animal Air Transportation Form to secure disability accommodations provided under regulations of the United States Department of Transportation (18 U.S.C. § 1001).

All service dogs are welcome aboard JetBlue flights but if they are coming through the restricted countries mentioned above you may have to get advanced approval from the CDC (U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).

JetBlue pets as checked baggage policy

At the moment JetBlue does not allow you to travel with your pet as checked baggage in the hold. You can only carry your pets as baggage in the cabin.

Jetblue Pet Policy: Everything You Need to Know Before Flying with Your Dog or Cat

JetBlue Airways is incredibly pet-friendly and always strives to fulfil their passengers’ needs to the best of their abilities. With the company’s JetPaws program, passengers can learn about traveling with their four-legged friend with JetBlue Airways. 

However, it is important to note that JetBlue does not ship pets as cargo, and only cats and dogs that meet its requirements are allowed to travel in the cabin. Pets are allowed on both domestic and international flights. 

The requirements will be different based on where you are traveling. Let’s see what is included in the JetBlue pet policy.

JetBlue In-Cabin Pet Travel

Pet carriers, pet strollers , tsa security screening , pets traveling internationally , puppies entering the united states, traveling with service animals, final word .

JetBlue’s pet policy states that only six pets are allowed on each flight, so you should book the ticket as early as possible. You can only take a small cat or dog with you on a JetBlue flight. The animal must be in an FAA-approved pet carrier that fits under the seat in front of you. 

The airline allows only one in-cabin pet per customer. You can book your pet online, on the JetBlue mobile application, or by contacting JetBlue. Add your pet in the Extras section during booking. 

Pets Traveling Domestically

According to its pet policy, JetBlue accepts pets on all domestic flights. However, remember that vaccination requirements vary from state to state, even when traveling within the United States. For example, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands require vaccination documentation for pets.

You are responsible for understanding the pet import requirements and acquiring all necessary documentation before traveling with a pet. 

Travel guidelines

At the airport.

• The fee for your pet at JetBlue is $125 each way.
• Know that only one pet is allowed inside your pet carrier; along with your pet, they count as one personal item. 
• If you are traveling on Blue Basic, carry-on bags are not allowed, but you can bring one personal item in addition to the carrier. 
• Pets are not permitted in Mint. 
• JetBlue does not accept pets on interline/codeshare bookings. 
• Adding a pet to your booking can earn 300 extra points per flight segment if you are a TrueBlue member. 
• If you have already paid the pet fee and the pet is confirmed to travel, you can check in 24 hours before departing online on the JetBlue app or at an airport kiosk.
• Once you get to the airport, head to the full-service counter or speak with a JetBlue crewmember in the self-service lobby to get your JetPaws bag tag to attach to your pet’s carrier.
• While in the airport, your pet must remain inside its carrier zipped up or closed. 
• You should ensure that your pet uses the bathroom only at designated areas in the airport.
• The carrier cannot exceed 17″ L x 12.5″ W x 8.5″ H (43.18 L x 31.75 W x 21.59 H in centimeters). 
• The combined weight of the pet and the carrier must not exceed 20 pounds. 
• Your pet must be able to move around and stand up inside the carrier comfortably. 
• The carrier must have a leak-proof bottom and be well-ventilated. 
• JetBlue accepts both soft-sided and hard-sided pet carriers. 
• Carriers that allow for possible pet escape will not be accepted. 
• You can purchase a pet carrier at the airport ticket counter for $55. 

JetBlue considers pet strollers assistive devices that can be checked at the ticket counter for no additional charge. You can also gate-check your pet stroller if you want to keep it with you through the terminal. 

• You must show your pet to the TSA security officers at the security checkpoint. 
• Your pet carrier is subject to search by the airport security authorities. 
• The airport security authorities will ask you to hold your pet and pass through screening equipment while they inspect the carrier. JetBlue pet policy specifies that your pet will never be placed through an X-ray machine. 
• If you cannot hold your pet through screening, it will have to undergo secondary screening. The secondary screening includes a visual and physical inspection by airport security officers. 

On board and in-flight 

According to the JetBlue pet policy, passengers traveling with their pets are not permitted to sit in an emergency exit row, bulkhead seat, Mint seat, or any seat restricted for under-seat storage. 

Instead, JetBlue recommends sitting in an aisle or a window seat if you travel with your pet. Additionally, once you board your flight, your pet must stay inside its carriage for the whole flight. 

You must place your pet carrier below the seat in front of you during take-off and landing. You can hold your pet carrier on your lap during the flight. If you decide to purchase an extra seat for your pet, you can place the carrier on the extra seat during the flight.

It is important to mention that JetBlue does not accept pets on flights to Trinidad and Tobago and to and from London. The United States’ entry requirements differ based on the country of origin. If your pet does not meet the requirements, it can result in denied entry. 

For pet travel to other international destinations, documentation requirements vary by country. You, as the customer, are responsible for understanding each country’s animal import requirements and acquiring all the needed documentation before traveling with your pet. 

Barbados, Grand Cayman, Jamaica, and St. Lucia 

If you plan to travel with your pet to Barbados, Grand Cayman, Jamaica, or St. Lucia, JetBlue urges you to start the import process at least 30 days before travel to prepare your cat or dog to travel.

Countries with a high risk of rabies

In accordance with the CDC guidelines on dog importation from specific countries, and by taking into account JetBlue’s network limitations, the airline does not accept dogs or cats on flights to or from:

• Colombia (MDE)
• Ecuador (UIO)

Since December 20, 2021, all passengers traveling with dogs or cats from the following BlueCities must enter the United States through JFK only. JFK is a CDC-classified Point of Entry for vaccinated pets. 

• Colombia (BOG, CTG)
• Dominican Republic (SDQ, STI, PUJ, POP)
• Ecuador (GYE)
• Guatemala (GUA)
• Guyana (GEO)
• Haiti (PAP)
• Honduras (SAP)

However, passengers can travel to the above destinations from any JetBlue city with their pets. 

Suppose you and your dog are entering the United States from any of the cities mentioned above. In that case, you must provide the following documentation for your pet to be cleared for travel to the US.:

• Your dog must have a valid US-issued rabies vaccine certificate or CDC Dog Import permit. 
• Your dog must have proof of microchip. 
• Your dog must be at least six months old.
• Your dog must be healthy upon arrival. 

If you are traveling with your puppy, it must be at least 16 weeks old to enter the United States. Your puppy must receive the rabies vaccine at least one month before travel. You must show the rabies certificate upon arrival. The certificate must be valid for the duration of your stay and include the following:

• Your name and address as the owner of the puppy.
• The puppy’s breed, sex, date of birth, color, and markings. 
• The microchip number. 
• Date of the rabies vaccination, vaccine product information, and the date the vaccination expires. 
• The name, license number, address, and signature of the veterinarian who administered the vaccination to your puppy. 

JetBlue Airways welcomes service animals on all flights. Requesting service animal process 

Requesting service animal travel with JetBlue is a two-step process you must complete at least 48 hours before your flight. However, if your trip includes a flight on a partner airline, you will need to contact them separately as they may have a different process. 

The first step

You must complete a DOT Service Animal Air Transportation Form online to receive your service Animal Transport Solutions Service Animal ID. You can proceed to the second step if you have your Animal Transport Solutions Service Animal ID. 

When filling out the request for an Animal Transport Solutions Service Animal ID, you will need to provide the following information:

• The name and contact number of your animal’s veterinarian.
• The date and expiration of the rabies vaccination. 
• The service animal’s trainer’s name or organization and number.

Once the form is approved, the Service Animal ID is valid through the expiration date of your service animal’s rabies vaccine. You will not need to complete this step again until you have to update your service animal’s vaccination record. When it’s time to renew the rabies vaccination, you will get an email reminder from Service Animal Transport Solutions. 

The second step

When you receive an approved Service Animal ID and have booked your flight on JetBlue, you can request travel with your service animal. You must complete the second step every time you make a reservation to fly on JetBlue with your service animal. 

Once your request is approved, it will be valid for all flights on that reservation. JetBlue recommends that you have a hard copy or an electronic version of your US DOT Service Animal Transportation Form and Service Animal Transport Solutions approval when traveling.

Service animals in Mint

Per the JetBlue service animal policy, your service animal can accompany you in any seat except the emergency exit row. This is allowed as long as the animal does not obstruct an aisle or other area that must be unobstructed to facilitate an emergency evacuation.

"On flights with American you can bring one pet carrier as a carry-on if: You pay the carry-on pet fee; Your pet stays in the pet carrier and under the seat in front of you the entire flight," says American Airline's on their website , adding that passengers can also bring "one additional item on board with your pet," which can be a personal item like a purse or small handbag or a carry-on bag that fits in the overhead bin and meets the airline's requirements .

"Remember, you can only bring one with your pet carrier, not both," says American.

Earlier, travelers with pets were only allowed to bring a small personal item, that could fit under the seat if they were bringing their pet onboard. Anything bigger than that, like a carry-on, was required to be checked for $35. Alternatively, pet owners could put their pet in the cargo hold if they wanted to bring a bigger item with them on the flight.

However, there has been no change in fees required to bring a pet onboard. That remains fixed at $150, as per the American Airline's website. Meanwhile, pet strollers are still required to be checked in and all checked bag fees apply.

Similar to many other airlines, JetBlue recently raised its checked bag fees , but that doesn't mean you can't still travel with checked luggage for cheap.

Luckily, with the JetBlue baggage policy, there are still many ways to avoid paying baggage fees on your next flight depending on your JetBlue elite status , the fare class you booked or which credit card you're carrying.

JetBlue's baggage fees are also very simple and clearly stated, making it easy to understand the additional cost you'll incur on your next flight; let's take a closer look.

JetBlue carry-on guidelines

All passengers flying with JetBlue can bring along one personal item that fits under the seat in front. The personal item might be a backpack, purse, laptop bag or approved pet carrier (if you pay the pet fee ). It cannot be larger than 17 inches by 13 inches by 8 inches.

On top of the personal item, JetBlue passengers who booked a Blue, Blue Plus, Blue Extra or Mint fare are also allowed a carry-on bag that can fit into the overhead bin. There is no fee for this second bag, although the size can't exceed 22 inches by 14 inches by 9 inches. Note that these dimensions include wheels and handles.

Passengers who booked the lowest fare ticket — Blue Basic — are not allowed to bring a larger carry-on bag to store in the overhead bin. Blue Basic passengers who bring extra bags or a bag that is too large to fit beneath the seat in front will face JetBlue checked bag fees. JetBlue baggage policy currently lists this fee as $65 for the first or second checked bag and $180 for the third.

There are some exceptions to this policy. You can still bring a carry-on bag to place within the overhead bin when traveling on a Blue Basic fare if you fall into one of the following categories:

• Mosaic members (who get a carry-on bag and early boarding with all fares)
• If you're flying on a transatlantic flight (including connecting flights)
• Travelers combining a Blue Basic fare with an Even More Space seat (on all legs, if connecting)*
• Active U.S. military members
• Unaccompanied minors

*Note: If you're flying on a transatlantic flight, booking an Even More Space seat does not grant you any additional baggage other than those already included.

JetBlue checked bag fees

All JetBlue passengers are allowed to check bags. Your fare type, JetBlue elite status and whether you have a JetBlue credit card will determine the checked bag fee you must pay.

JetBlue has two different checked bag fee charts — one for routes within the U.S., Latin America, the Caribbean and Canada, and one for transatlantic flights.

The chart below will allow you to determine your JetBlue checked bag fee for your first and second checked bag at the airport.

JetBlue baggage fees for flights within the US, Latin America, the Caribbean and Canada

*For flights purchased before Jan. 11, 2024, the first checked baggage fee will cost $30 to $35. For flights purchased between Jan. 11 and Jan. 31, 2024, the first checked baggage fee will cost $35 to $40. For flights purchased before July 25, 2023, second checked baggage fees cost $45.

Unless you book a Blue Plus fare or a Mint seat, are a Mosaic loyalty member, have the JetBlue Plus Card or have the JetBlue Business Card , you will pay $35 to $45 for the first checked bag and $50 to $60 for the second checked bag.

However, paying your checked baggage fees more than 24 hours before departure can secure the least expensive pricing ($35 for your first bag and $50 for your second bag). Remember that travelers with Blue Plus fares, JetBlue Plus cardmembers and JetBlue Business cardmembers only have one bag included, so you'll still have to pay for the second checked bag.

Per the JetBlue baggage policy, Mint passengers can check a bag up to 70 pounds. If you want to travel with more than two checked bags, you'll need to pay $125 per bag for your third bag and $150 for each subsequent bag, regardless of your fare type or elite status. Note that on reservations made before July 25, 2023, the third checked bag fee is $150.

You may want to check the JetBlue baggage policy for yourself before your trip, though. After all, some destinations have limitations on luggage — specifically international destinations.

JetBlue baggage fees for transatlantic flights

Although the fee to check a bag is significantly more expensive when traveling to Europe, most fare types include your first checked bag.

However, if you want to travel with more than two checked bags, you'll need to pay $200, 150 pounds or 185 euros per bag for your third bag and each subsequent bag regardless of your fare type or elite status.

Bags that don't incur JetBlue baggage fees

Some items won't count toward your carry-on or checked baggage limit, regardless of your destination. For example, if you are traveling with an assistive device — such as a stroller, car seat, crutches or wheelchair — you can bring it with you for free (although it is still subject to carry-on size and weight restrictions).

Additionally, with the JetBlue baggage policy, all U.S. military members on active military orders and dependents can check up to five bags at no additional cost (and up to 99 pounds each). Those traveling for leisure along with their dependents can check up to two bags at no additional cost.

Overweight and oversize baggage fees

JetBlue charges both an overweight and oversize fee, which can add up quickly if you exceed limits.

These additional fees are charged as follows:

• Overweight fee (up to 99 pounds): $150 per bag; $150/120 pounds/140 euros per bag for transatlantic flights (bags that exceed 70 pounds not accepted on transatlantic flights)
• Oversize fee (up to 80 inches, including wheels and handles): $150 per bag; $150/120 pounds/140 euros on transatlantic flights

Fortunately, there are many ways to avoid JetBlue baggage fees.

Elite status allowances

All Mosaic loyalty members can check up to two bags at no cost. You can earn JetBlue Mosaic status by earning 50 Tiles.

Tiles can be earned in the following ways:

• Earn one Tile for every $100 spent on qualifying JetBlue purchases (including paid JetBlue flights, JetBlue Vacations packages and Paisly reservations).
• Earn one Tile for every $1,000 in qualifying spend on a JetBlue credit card.

Additionally, all eligible travel companions booked on the same reservation with a JetBlue Mosaic elite member can check up to two bags for no fee. For example, as long as one passenger in a family of four has Mosaic status, the group can check up to eight bags for no additional fee.

Avoid checked baggage fees by holding the right credit cards

JetBlue offers three credit cards — two personal cards and one business card. However, only two cards offer a checked bag benefit. In particular, with the JetBlue Plus Card and JetBlue Business Card , you can check your first bag for free as long as you purchase the ticket with your card. This perk extends to three additional companions on the same reservation as the cardholder.

Both cards come with a $99 annual fee. So, even if you only check a bag on three flights each year, you'll break even.

Book a premium cabin

When you book your ticket, there are many fare-class options — each one includes different benefits for your flight. If you aren't a Mosaic member and you don't have an eligible JetBlue credit card, then you might want to consider selecting the Blue Plus fare option. Doing so will allow you to check your first bag for free. However, this fare type is not an option on many routes, so don't be surprised if you don't see it listed.

JetBlue Mint seats also allow you to check up to two bags at no additional fee. And for flights within the U.S., Latin America and the Caribbean, you can check a bag up to 70 pounds without facing any overweight charges.

Use card travel credits to cover fees

If you have to pay baggage fees on your next JetBlue flight, know that many travel rewards cards offer annual statement credits . You can use these credits toward various travel purchases, including baggage fees.

For example, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® offers a $300 annual travel credit on anything that codes as "travel" on your credit card statement. You'll also find that many American Express cards , such as The Platinum Card® from American Express , offer annual airline fee credits . However, note that you'll need to enroll before using some of these benefits.

Bottom line

Although JetBlue charges a checked baggage fee for most customers, there are many ways to avoid this additional cost. For starters, if you can pack a smaller suitcase, you can bring your bag as a carry-on and store it in the airline's overhead bin (as long as you don't book a Blue Basic fare).

If you must check your luggage, your first bag will travel with you for free as long as you have a JetBlue credit card. While you might not want to have another credit card in your wallet, if you find yourself flying JetBlue often, an eligible JetBlue credit card is an easy way to avoid the JetBlue baggage fee.

American Airlines Just Made It Easier and Cheaper to Fly With a Pet — What to Know

The airline will now allow travelers to bring a full-size carry-on bag with them for no extra charge when they book a carry-on pet.

American Airlines is making it easier to travel with pets, changing its policy to allow travelers to bring a free carry-on bag in addition to their furry friend.

The airline will now allow travelers to bring a full-size carry-on bag with them for no extra charge when they book a carry-on pet, American confirmed to Travel + Leisure . Previously, the airline counted the pet as the carry-on bag and travelers were not permitted to bring another roller bag with them.

The change went into effect on March 28. 

Passengers flying with a carry-on pet, however, will not be able to bring a large carry-on item that fits in the overhead bin and a personal item at the same time, and must choose one or the other.

“We made the change to provide a more convenient and comfortable experience to customers whose pets fly American,” an airline spokesperson told T+L.

American charges $150 per kennel for carry-on pets, according to the airline . Carry-on pets are allowed on most flights up to 12 hours within the United States, between the U.S. and Canada, to Mexico, Puerto Rico, St. Croix, and St. Thomas.

Pets brought in the cabin must be small enough to “fit comfortably” inside a closed carrier and fit under the seat in front. The airline recommends travelers use a soft-sided collapsible kennel.

Other airlines similarly restrict passengers who are traveling with carry-on pets from bringing a large carry-on bag. Delta Air Lines, for example, counts the pet’s kennel as a passenger’s carry-on bag and only allows travelers to bring an additional personal item, according to the airline .

Like American’s new policy, Southwest allows passengers traveling with a carry-on pet to bring either a personal item or a carry-on item with them in addition to their companion.

When flying with pets , travelers should stock the carrier with plenty of necessities like water or treats and check in for a flight as late as possible.

How mosaic perks work.

As soon as you reach Mosaic 1 status and each time you level up, you’ll automatically unlock Mosaic Signature Perks — no need to select them. How to reach Mosaic status

Now that you know what you get as a Mosaic, let’s answer how you get to Mosaic. Just as a Mosaic is made up of tiles, Mosaic status is built by collecting tiles from the many ways you JetBlue. That means you can fly it, buy it, drive it, make yourself at home at it — the sky is not the limit.

Changes (including same-day switches) are not allowed on Blue Basic fares booked on or after Mar 18, 2024. Mosaic members may make free same-day switches when booking a Blue Basic fare. Changes to Blue Basic fares booked before Mar 18, 2024 are subject to a fee of $100 within North America, Central America, and the Caribbean, or $200 for other routes (fare difference may apply). Mosaic benefits that are extended to others on the same reservation are available only if the Mosaic member is present for check-in with all travelers on that same reservation and the Mosaic member completes all segments of travel with all travelers associated with that reservation. The eligible change/cancel fee for any other traveler not on the same reservation will still apply.  For eligible changes, a flight fare increase or JetBlue Vacations package increase and change/cancel fees may apply, and for JetBlue Vacations, other Travel Supplier change or cancellation fees may still apply.  For bookings made with an entity other than JetBlue, booking agent fees, other third party fees and/or JetBlue third-party booking change/cancel fees may still apply.
