Mike Stud is the stage name of Michael Francis Seander Jr, a rapper hailing from Providence, Rhode Island, USA who was born on the 30th of October 1988. A former baseball player at college, Stud made his musical debut in 2010, and has released two studio albums since then.

Maybe we’re just getting better at multi-tasking as time goes on. There was once a time when musicians were musicians and artists stuck to what they were good at. When any artist getting involved in something like acting or, heaven forbid it, an actor getting involved in music would have been ridiculed as a poser of the highest order. However that’s beginning to change, we have musicians who actually can act and actors who actually can write music, and weirdest of all, we have sportsmen who don’t embarrass everyone in the known world when they get involved with music. Rest assured I’m not talking about Wayne Rooney’s karaoke take on Valerie.

In this particular case I’m talking about Mike Stud, one of the hip-hop world’s most promising newcomers who didn’t start writing and releasing music on the internet until he was twenty two years old. Practically ancient in these post-Lorde years, and that’s because his first passion was sports. A prodigy his whole life, by the time he graduated high school he’d made his school’s baseball and basketball varsity teams, a sports scholarship to Durham, North Carolina’s Duke University followed where he was on the fast track to a professional career before disaster struck.

Following his second year there, Stud was struck down with chronic arm issues that required surgery that took him out of commission for his entire 2009 season. While recuperating, he turned to making music to pass the time and eventually it became his main focus, spurred on by how a track of his, a joke song created for his baseball team called “College Humour”, became a viral hit soon after he posted it. His second song posted “In This Life” was another viral hit, viewed over 1.7 million times in short order. The following year, his first three hits were all featured on his first mixtape “A Toast To Tommy”, which hit the top three of the iTunes hip-hop charts while still being released completely independently.

Since then, he’s become a true star on YouTube, with his total channel views reaching 37 million views by July 2014. It’s translated into two studio albums and a string of sold out tours all over his home country, and the only way is up from here. He’s proved himself as a talent that can get through any challenge put in his way, and a very bright future beckons as a result. Highly recommended.

Mike Stud hardly had the most conventional start to his musical career, originally this Rhode Island born artists talents lied in sport as a baseball player for his University team in North Carolina. It was only after Mike was recovering from surgery that he turned to music and discovered his talent for writing verse and melody, years later he has a live show to match his impressive performance on the baseball field.

His career really began to take off through the assistance of YouTube, as Stud saw his debut single 'College Humor' go viral and reach over 1.4 million, his following three videos did the same so by the release of his debut full length album, he had a cult fan following. This is how the star packs out gigs, with many screaming girls but also fans of his own brand of hip hop that is all very emotively written and personal to the star who is completely locked in the zone whilst performing.

He does acknowledge fans throughout and thanks them for continued support as he ploughs through viral hits, singles and material from new album 'Closer' which charted at #13 on the US Billboard charts. It is worth noting that Stud seems to have the whole package in terms of what makes a great pop star, he has looks, charisma and a fair amount of talent which are assured to take him far. I imagine once he is signed by a major label, you will see his name appear far more regularly in the charts and his tours will simply grow bigger and bigger.

Mike Stud was by far one of the best concerts I've been too. I had VIP so I met him before the show, and he's the nicest guy you'll ever meet. He was so nice and wanted to take tons of pictures and sign whatever you wanted, asked your name and asked about yourself. He actually seemed to care about his fans. By the time the concert came around, it was so perfect. He talked to the crowd like he knew everyone, he sang to people. Girls were throwing their bras, guys were going insane. He's also the most perfect looking person I have ever seen in my entire life. Good ass concert.

Michael Francis Seander, Jr., better known as Mike Stud, is a Duke-educated, form er All-American baseball player who unexpectedly turned to music after an injury robbed him of his lifelong dream to play pro ball. Now, Mike Stud can be seen at the top of the Billbo ard and iTunes charts as he continues to build his brand in the most unconventional way -- as an unsigned artist, heavily relying on social media to build awareness, sell tickets and engage with fans around the world.

In just five short years, Mike Stud has garnered over 60 million views on YouTube, released three #1 Hip- Hop Albums on iTunes, and headlined three notoriously wild national tours.

His music first received notice with the rap single, College Humor, in 2010, which he recorded as a joke. The video was a huge viral success, racking up over 1.5 million views. Mike's music career took off quickly: He released his first mixtape, A Toast to Tommy, in October 2011. In May 2013, Stud's debut studio album, Relief debuted at 109 on the Billboard 200 chart and peaked at 55. But the biggest move from the former pitcher-turned rapper came when Mike Stud hit No. 1 on Billboard's Rap charts with his 2014 2nd album, Closer, which received over 1.4 million YouTube views for the title track. From All-American baseball player to YouTube sensation to Billboard charter, Mike Stud is making immediate waves online after the release of his latest album “Closer” earlier this afternoon. 

Stud’s song “Closer” debuted at No. 1 on the Real-Time chart around 3 pm ET today (July 1) after Pandora announced its premiere on Twitter at 2:42 pm ET. The song knocked band 5 Seconds of Summer’s “Don’t Stop” to No. 2 on the Trending 140 chart , signaling an immediate fan craze. (As of publishing time, the song sits at no. 4).

Stud, who originally made his name as a baseball super athlete, receiving a full scholarship to Duke University, began his elusive rap career while he was recovering from a sports injury. He recorded “College Humor” for his teammates on the Duke Baseball team.

After its release, the video turned viral, and Stud’s music career swiftly took over his athletic one. Currently, Stud has racked up over 35 million views on YouTube.  His first mixtape “A Toast to Tommy”, which debuted last October, reached No. 3 and No. 2 on the worldwide and US iTunes Hop-Hop album charts. His next mixtape, “Relief,” reached a high point of No. 55 on the Billboard 200 in June 2013.

The video for the album’s single “Closer,” which was produced by Louis Bell, was released on YouTube on June 25. The song references Stud’s journey from injured athlete to artist. The melody, similar to the likes of Drake, allows for Stud to take the listener on a smooth but impactful lyrical journey.

Stud begins his tour “The #StudSummer Tour” on July 10 and will be ending in New York’s Best Buy theatre on Sept 12.

Russia: Moscow, St Petersburg, ??

I'm starting to prepare for a solo trip to Russia for the fall this year or next spring. I will have to go back to Paris. If I build my air ticket right, I can open-jaw Moscow & St Petersburg, with Paris as a stop-over, for not much more $ than the return ticket to just Paris (AF). The order these two cities will be done will depend on the season (start with St P in the fall, Moscow in the spring). I can schedule in 7 nights at minimum (3 in Moscow, 4 in St P), but can consider as long as 3 weeks. There seems to be plenty of decent budget accommodations in both cities. If I spend the min. time, then I will likely take the new train service between the two cities. What if I wanted to spend more time: What extra things should I do or visit if I schedule more time in Moscow and/or St Petersburg? More importantly: what can I include between the two cities? All suggestions are welcome! Thanks! PS - I have the Thomas Cook Traveller Guide to Moscow & St Petersburg (4th ed) on order.

Diane, I haven't been back to Russia since the early 1990s, but on my two trips there back in the day, the common stop overs in the region were cities of the "Golden Ring" surrounding Moscow. As part of student tour groups, I've toured the cities of Vladimir, Suzdal and Novgorod en route from Moscow to St. Petersburg. (Novgorod, or Velikii "Great" Novgorod in particular can be reached between the two giant Russian cities. Search guidebooks or online to see if their sites interest you, but be sure to not confuse "Great" Novgorod with Nizhnii Novgorod, known during the communist era as "Gorky"). I have co-workers who have traveled to Yaroslavl and Rostov and they spoke highly of these cities, too.

I would recommend at least 4 nights in Moscow. I had a tip from another traveler who said "Moscow is a huge city not used to tourists. Plan on seeing one major sight a day, and anything else is gravy." At first I did not really believe this, but after visiting, it is true. The distances are massive and even if you make good use of the metro, there is still often a hike to wherever you are going. It is a fabulous city, however. PM me if you would like more information, we were there in 2008.

In St. Petersburg take a few walking tours from Peter's walking tours - got to places that we would never have found with out them.

Here is a tentative tour itinerary for a four days' stay in St. Petersburg and three days' stay in Moscow: St. Petersburg – Day 1 – a panoramic city tour with visits to Peter-and-Paul fortress, St. Isaac's cathedral and the Church-on-Spilt Blood (approx. 6 hrs.) Day 2 – a trip to Catherine's palace in Pushkin (Tsarskoye Selo) and the palace of Paul the First in Pavlovsk (approx. 6 hrs.) Day 3 – a day at the Hermitage – a tour of the museum and the two Gold Rooms (approx. 5 hrs.) Day 4 – a trip to Peterhof to visit the Grand Palace, the fountain park, upon return downtown – excursions at Usupov palace and/or the Russian museum (7-8 hrs.) Two more summer palaces of the Russian Tsars are located in the towns of Gatchina and Oranienbaum, about 1.5 hrs. drive from the center of St. Petersburg. Moscow – Day 1 – a panoramic city tour with a visit to Novodevichy convent (approx. 6 hrs.) Day 2 – a tour of the Kremlin with the Diamond Fund and the Armory, the Red Square and Kitai-gorod tour (approx. 6 hrs.) Day 3 – Pushkin Art Gallery and Tretiakov Art Gallery (approx. 5 hrs.) A few days can be spent visiting the ancient Russian towns of the Golden Ring. Novgorod can be visited either on the way from one city to the other, or on a day trip from St. Petersburg.

I was in Petersburg for 2 days (way too short). We found it pretty difficult because almost no one spoke English and we spoke no Russian. Many (if not most) taxi drivers neither speak English nor read the Latin alphabet. At the Hermitage, even some of the ticket sellers didn't speak English. Almost none of the exhibits were labeled in English. Unless you speak and read Russian, I would imagine it would be near impossible to visit anywhere outside of Moscow and Petersburg. Do spend the time to learn to read Cyrillic - at least you will be able to read the names.

Yes, I found having the hotel front desk write little notes for me in Cyrillic very helpful. They would write "Two Metro 10 Ticket booklets please" and other things down for me. It was invaluable.

Thank you so much everyone!! As I now have looked a bit more into this idea of combining Russia with Air France tickets to Paris, I am getting sold on it. I think that I have a handle on the visa situation and can deal directly with the office in Ottawa for it. I hadn't given any thought to learning the Cyrillic alphabet, so I appreciate the encouragement to do so, especially if the phonetic word can make a bit of sense. I have been in situations before of dealing with important language barriers, so every little bit helps! I spent 10 weeks traveling solo in Iran, but learning to read anything in Farsi beyond the numbers was not helpful in that case. It looks like I'll be able to add enough time to both cities and more, so 2-3 weeks will be likeliest. I will post again when more specific questions come up. I will probably not find out until June or July, as to when I will need to schedule the next trip to France (to include Russia).
