Layover Sightseeing

Buses are cheap, and several routes serve the airport, but taxis may be more efficient and easier to use, especially if you don’t know the language. Seek a licensed cab company from outside the main terminal and reach the riverfront area within 30 minutes or so.

Stroll the neighbourhood surrounding the old Saigon Post Office, designed in French colonial architecture. Head to Ho Chi Minh City Hall and Plaza, and swing by the Opera House. Visit the War Remnants Museum, which explores the local perspective on the Vietnam War era of the 1950s-1970s. Hop on a boat ride to see the city from another angle. The very popular Cu Chi Tunnels are well worth a visit, but their distance means you should plan a half or full-day trip in advance.

However you spend your layover, leave plenty of time to return to the airport for your next flight.

Hop online thanks to free and unlimited WiFi.

  • A traveller's guide to Vietnam's airports

All photos by Christian Berg

Airports are often the first point of entry for travellers to Vietnam. Whether you are aiming for a smooth arrival in the country or want to prepare for a domestic flight, you can breeze through the process by reading up on this complete guide to Vietnam’s airports.

A brief overview of vietnam’s airports.

Most international flights come in through one of Vietnam’s three main airports in Hanoi, Da Nang or Ho Chi Minh City. There are also direct international flights to major tourism hubs such as Nha Trang and Phu Quoc. No matter which airport you land in, you will need a visa or be eligible for a visa exemption to enter the country. You can find out more about Vietnam’s visa exemptions and requirements here .

Within Vietnam, flying is usually the most convenient way to reach distant destinations. Flights are normally affordable but you should expect prices to go up around public holidays. Domestic carriers are Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet Air, Bamboo Airways and Jetstar. For more about getting around within Vietnam, read this story .

Points to note

Taxis: Mai Linh and Vinasun are two trusted taxi companies within Vietnam. You can ask or look for their representatives at the airport taxi bays on arrival. Facilities: All international airports in Vietnam have free WiFi, water drinking stations, currency exchange centres, duty-free shops, and smoking lounges for passengers. Dining: Vietnam’s airports tend toward chain restaurants. Burger King, Highlands Coffee, Big Bowl and Star Cafe appear in almost every terminal. ATMs: ATMs can be found just outside the entrances of Vietnam’s airports. Most local ATMs dispense sums of 2,000,000 VND to 5,000,000 VND per transaction.  Luggage stubs: Be sure to keep your luggage stubs when taking domestic flights in Vietnam. These will be checked by airport personnel before you leave the terminal.

Guide to Hanoi's International Airport

Terminals  .

Hanoi 's Noi Bai International Airport (HAN) has two airport terminals: T1 for domestic flights and T2 for international flights. The terminals are 850m apart. A free shuttle bus runs every 10 - 15 mins from 6am to 1am between the 1st floor of T2 on western side, and the 2nd floor of T1 (departures.) The check-in counters at in the domestic terminal are divided into three lobbies: A, B, and E (for Vietjet flights.) All boarding gates are accessible once you’re through the security checkpoint, no matter which lobby you enter from.

The international terminal is a newer construction. There is an ATM within the immigrations area for those who need to pay visa fees in Vietnamese Dong. The terminal also has a left luggage or locker room, and duty-free stalls.

Transport

Noi Bai Airport is about 27 kilometres from downtown Hanoi. It usually takes about an hour to reach the airport from the city centre.

Taxis: Metered taxis to and from the airport cost about 300,000 VND to 400,000 VND. Your driver may request an additional 15,000 VND for the airport toll fee. Ride-hailing apps: Apps such as Grab, Be, and Go Viet are a great option for those who have Vietnamese SIM cards. The ride typically costs about 250,000 VND with GrabCar. Minivans: From 4am to 9pm, VietJet Air and Vietnam Airlines run mini-vans from the airport to downtown Hanoi and vice versa. You’ll see these shuttles when you exit Arrivals. The route ends at 1 Quang Trung in the Old Quarter. Tickets cost 40,000VND. Buses: From 6:30am to 11pm, the bright orange 86 Express Bus runs from the airport through central Hanoi and ends at the train station. Tickets are 30,000 VND.

Guide to Da Nang's International Airport

Da Nang International Airport (DAD) has two terminals: T1 for domestic flights and T2 for international flights. Both terminals are in easy walking distance of each other via a covered walkway. The Da Nang airport is modern and rarely overcrowded. The arrivals hall in the domestic terminal has lounges from major resorts, as well as shops and ATMs just outside the exit. The international arrival visa desk is less busy than those in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, but there is no ATM in the immigration area so be prepared to pay fees with USD or VND.

Vietnam International aiports

The airport in Da Nang is about five kilometres from the city centre, 29 kilometres from the Hoi An Ancient Town, and 98 kilometres from Hue. Allocate 30 minutes to reach the airport from the beach area in Da Nang.

Hired car: If you’re going to Hoi An, your hotel can arrange a car for a fixed price between 250,000 to 350,000 VND.  Taxis: Taxis to downtown Da Nang cost between 70,000 VND to 120,000 VND.  A metered taxi to Hoi An will cost upwards of 450,000 VND. Ride-hailing apps : Grab and Go Viet are available in Da Nang and work well for short distances and motorcycle transfers. You’ll need a Vietnamese SIM card to use these services. Shuttles: Affordable shuttle vans run hourly from 5am to 11pm from the airport to Da Nang City and Hoi An. Look for the Hoi An Express shuttle at gate A4 in the domestic arrivals area.

Guide to Ho Chi Minh City's International Airport

Ho Chi Minh City 's Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN) has two terminals (T1 domestic, T2 international) connected by a 500m covered walkway. The domestic terminal has two separate lobbies for boarding, one for Vietjet flights only. The line-up for the security check in Ho Chi Minh City can get clogged, so be sure to set aside enough time to reach your gate. Just outside the domestic terminal you’ll find a retail area with Starbucks and McDonalds. The international airport is a modern building with duty-free shops, airline lounges and restaurants in the departure lobbies.

International Airports Vietnam

The airport in Ho Chi Minh City is eight kilometres from the city centre. It can take 50 minutes or more to reach the airport depending on traffic.

Hired car: The Song Viet Car desk at the airport can arrange a car on the spot or in advance for a fixed price, from 180,000 VND. Taxis: Vinasun and Mai Linh taxis are available at the taxi bay. Expect to pay 120,000 VND  to 180,000 VND for a ride into town, plus 10,000 VND for the airport toll fee. Ride hailing apps: Grab, Be and Go Viet all work well in HCMC. Be sure to have a Vietnamese SIM card ready if you want to use these apps.  Buses: Two bright yellow buses run between the city center and the airport. These have plenty of room for luggage and the staff speak enough English to help travellers. For 20,000VND you can ride one of the two routes into town. Route 109 ends in the backpacker district and Route 49 ends at Ben Thanh Station. The first and last buses run at 5am to 2:30am. Tickets cost between 20,000 VND to 40,000 VND.

5-Things-to-do-on-Ho-Chi-Minh-layover.jpg

The Tan Son Nhat International Airport (airport code: SGN) is the biggest in Vietnam, located 8 kilometers from Ho Chi Minh City’s center – District 1, making many tourist attractions, shopping centers, and restaurants accessible for those stuck on short or long layovers.

Things to Do on a Ho Chi Minh City Layover

1. visit historical sites, cu chi tunnels.

Cu Chi Tunnels is about an hour and a half drive from Tan Son Nhat Airport. It will take around three hours for both-way transfers, and we recommend spending an hour exploring the tunnels and dugouts fully. The underground system here portrays the living conditions of Vietnamese soldiers during the resistance war and explains the victory of Vietnam.

You can check out our Cu Chi private tour if you have a half-day for Ho Chi Minh City layover activities (from 8 AM to 2 PM).

Independence Palace

Entrance fee: VND 40,000/adult Opening hours: Morning: 7:30 AM – 11 AM Afternoon: 1 PM – 4 PM

Independence Palace (Reunification Palace or Thong Nhat Hall) is a historical building in Ho Chi Minh City. It was the residence and workplace of the presidents of the Republic of Vietnam. Currently, it is considered by the Vietnamese government to be a particular national monument.

layover in hcm independence palace

It can take 30 minutes by cab or bus from Tan Son Nhat Airport to Independence Palace. From here, you can walk to other famous attractions, such as Saigon Central Office or Notre Dame Cathedral, just 500 meters away.

Notre Dame Cathedral

Notre Dame Cathedral is a unique piece of architecture (a combination of Roman and Gothic styles) from the French colonial empire, designed by architect B. J. Bourard. All construction materials, from cement, steel to screws, are all imported from France.

You can also try some coffee at nearby coffee shops and watch people’s daily life. The estimated transfer time is 30 minutes for a taxi or a bus.

Please note that the Notre Dame Cathedral is undergoing renovation, so the outside is not at its prettiest, and tourists cannot come inside.

In terms of historical sites, there are plenty of museums worth visiting besides the locations mentioned above.

2. Eat at an Authentic Vietnamese Restaurant

There are numerous restaurants in and around Tan Son Nhat Airport. You can easily bump into familiar brands with many international franchise restaurants here. However, if you want to go out of the airport, try some traditional dishes from Vietnamese cuisine. Below is the list for you.

Additionally, make sure to try Ca phe sua da , which is a combination of strong coffee and condensed milk. This is a very popular and signature drink in Vietnam and would make a nice introduction to Vietnam.

3. Get a Massage

Stopping by a spa would be an excellent choice for recuperation, especially when you are tired from jet lag after a long flight.

There is a foot spa on the 3rd floor, a relaxing lounge on the 2nd floor in the international terminal, and a Vietnamese spa in the domestic terminal.

4. Do Some Shopping

A duty-free shop inside the airport offers limited goods, but you can buy products from luxury brands such as Dior, Chanel, and Cartier. There is also a shopping mall named Parkson CT Plaza, just about a 5-minute walk outside the airport. This mall has a food court in the basement with plenty of choices, including international brands like Lotteria or KFC and traditional dishes. The quality of food is rated as accepted, and it is clean.

Ben Thanh Market is a good place to shop and eat if you have more time. You could find almost anything you need here at lower prices than the shops above.

5. Have a Lookout at the City

Regarding the aerial view of the city, the Bitexco Financial Tower , currently the second tallest building in the city, is the place to go. You can go to a cafe or restaurant and see the Saigon River. Or you can spend VND 200,000 (including water, wifi, and binoculars) to visit its Skydeck and watch the city from above.

Before You Go on Ho Chi Minh City Layover Trips

Several things should be taken into account to determine your time frame:

Measure the time for transferring from the airport to your destination . Please carefully consider the length of your layover time because, with international flights, you are requested to arrive 2 hours before the flights. The international departure process can be lengthy, depending on how busy the airport might be.

Store your luggage. If you don’t want to carry the bags, you can leave them at two locker rooms in the international terminal. Luggage storage services cost about VND 27,500 per hour (US$ 1.4).

Exchange money. You can use dollars in the shops at the airport. Outside of the airport, you may have to use Vietnamese currency .

Check your visa. Certain nationalities can enter Vietnam without a visa , but the visa regulation is often changed, so double-check.

15 Things to do in Vietnam + Tourist Spots

Vietnam is most known for its turbulent wartime history, delicious food, and Ha Long Bay. Before arriving in the country and traveling around its countrysides, little did I know that it is also home to some of the most spectacular natural landscapes in Southeast Asia, and charming heritage sites that are worth a peek.

Vietnam’s tourist spots are broadly spread out in its northern, central, and southern regions. The country isn’t overwhelmingly massive, but unless you’re traveling long-term or plan to stick to just one or two regions, you will have to pick destinations to skip or prioritize.

To make it easy for you to decide on where to go, here’s a list of my favorite places to visit in Vietnam:

Da Nang is one of the biggest surprises on my first visit to Central Vietnam. It’s a major tourist hub with its own set of attractions and convenient direct domestic and international flight connections. Da Nang is a great place to visit for travelers who aren’t ready to leave their urban comfort zones. This clean, modern, and laid-back city is bordered by a long white sand beach that is lined with top-notch resorts. The riverside area of the city center feels more like a huge outdoor theme park with well-maintained promenades, iconic bridges lit up at night, and the Sun Wheel (giant Ferris Wheel).

After Hanoi & Ho Chi Minh, Da Nang’s airport is the next most well-connected international airport in Vietnam. Da Nang International Airport (DAD) serves direct flights from Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Seoul-Incheon, Shanghai-Pudong, Siem Reap, Singapore, Taipei, and Tokyo-Narita. Hue is central Vietnam was the seat of Nguyen Dynasty emperors and the national capital from 1802-1945. It is home to a massive royal citadel called the Forbidden Purple City, which admittedly sounds more interesting than the actual war-ravaged site. For travelers who love visiting heritage sites, a more tempting incentive to visit Hue are exquisite imperial tombs scattered around the outskirts of the city.

Location : Thua Thien Hue Province, central Vietnam . Save on Google Maps .

The best way to explore the area is on a scenic boat ride that passes through the mountainscape or by following the riverside path by bicycle. Ninh Binh is two hours away from Hanoi in Northern Vietnam.

Ha Long Bay sunrise, Vietnam

No doubt Ha Long Bay is beautiful. With over 1,600 towering karst islands and islets, it’s a natural wonder worth a peek. However, if you’ve been to Krabi (Thailand) or El Nido (Philippines), do not expect too much with the quality of the water. The area that surrounds the bay is simply not as pristine, even under the bluest of skies. If you’re already traveling in Hanoi & Northern Vietnam, consider a trip to nearby Ha Long bay.

Ha Long City is the main jump-off point to the islands surrounding Ha Long Bay. The land journey from Hanoi takes around 3.5 to 4 hours. There are many shuttle/bus companies operating this route with pick-up directly from your hotel. You can easily book one at your hotel or by shopping around the travel agencies in Hanoi Old Quarter. To get around the bay, you have many options including sightseeing day trips to multi-day overnight cruises.

Thanks for sharing your travel to Vietnam. Been to Saigon in 2011 and been wanting to go to Hanoi. Never knew about the other worth visiting places until you shared your wonderful pictures. Is it hard to tour Halong Bay? Would it be just fine skipping Halong Bay when I go to Hanoi?

My pleasure Manuel :) There are still more potentially worthy places to visit in Vietnam. I want to go back as well, particularly, for Sa Pa and Da Lat. I booked an overnight boat cruise in Ha Long Bay for $80. I had a very bad experience with both the booking and tour agency. Touring Ha Long Bay is easy since you just have to turn up at the travel agencies in Hanoi or Ha Long City at least a day before (or book online). It’s finding a decent tour agency / boat operator that is the tricky part.

If the weather is too cloudy or rainy, I would skip Ha Long Bay. I enjoyed Ninh Binh and Phong Nha a lot more than Ha Long Bay.

About the last place Can Dao Island, actually its name is Con Dao, not Can Dao. Anyway, thank you for sharing the destinations to visit.

With its rolling emerald landscapes, perfect beaches and energetic cities, Vietnam is unsurprisingly a magnet for visitors in search of an incredible travel experience.

This country is teeming with attractions, so it pays to plan your trip around the places you absolutely can't miss. Where you want to go will influence whether you fly into cultured Hanoi in the north or energetic Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) in the south, or whether you bypass these two megacities for the laid-back beaches of tropical Phu Quoc.

Start your travel to-do list now with our ten favorite places to visit in Vietnam.

People splash around in the turquoise water of a beautiful island

1. Phu Quoc

Best for beach lovers

About as far south as you can get from Hanoi without splashing into the Gulf of Thailand, the island of Phu Quoc is where beach worshippers come to pray. Lapped by jewel-blue waters and edged by fine sandy beaches, this is a place to slip into low gear, reaching for a cocktail as the ember-colored sun dips into the bay.

But it's far from undiscovered – local tourists come in droves for theme park thrills at VinWonders and giddying views over the sea from the world's longest over-sea cable car. Phu Quoc is a popular stop for families, and if you fancy a change from the tourist scene, there are dense jungles to explore inland from the sand.

Planning tip: If you're bound for Phu Quoc, there's no need to go via Hanoi and HCMC; numerous Asian airlines offer flights from hubs such as Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Seoul, connecting with long-haul flights further afield.

Best for city slickers

Every trip has to start somewhere, and the ideal point of arrival for first-timers is Vietnam's historic capital. As well as easy infrastructure, inexpensive accommodation, world-class dining and more history than you'll ever have time to take in, Hanoi is the leaping-off point for the islands and outcrops around Halong Bay and the forest-draped trails of the mountainous northwest. Give yourself time to graze through Vietnam's catalog of street food treats  and pause to soak up the atmosphere in cozy cafes in the Old Quarter as well as rush around the sights.

Planning tip: To enjoy Hanoi nightlife on a budget, swing by the streetside bia hoi (draft beer) stalls at busy Bia Hoi Junction on the drinking strip of P Ta Hein.

A woman in a kayak holds her oar above her head as she floats along in a peaceful bay

3. Lan Ha Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay

Best for iconic photos

The crowds mob Halong Bay , but for our money, the shimmering bays to the north and south have a slight edge over Vietnam's most famous collection of outcrops and islands. While trips to Halong Bay are highly commercialized, with motorized luxury junks blowing diesel fumes around the eroded karst islands, Lan Ha Bay  and Bai Tu Long Bay  are a bit more laid-back, and you won't have quite so many cruise ships in your photos. Try kayaking between the outcrops, explore the tropical trails on Cat Ba Island – gateway to Lan Ha Bay – or kick back on the sand on Bai Tu Long's idyllic Co To Island.

Planning tip: If you visit Cat Ba Island, take time to explore the trails around Cat Ba National Park – if you trek with your own guide, it's easy to leave the crowds behind.

4. Ho Chi Minh City

Best for a sense of the past

Cosmopolitan Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) is the southern counterweight to Hanoi in the north, taking its cultural cues from the Mekong Delta and neighboring Cambodia . It's fast-paced, frenetic and fun, particularly after dark, when the pavements transform into a mobile buffet of street food stalls and roadside bars.

A little of the frontier feel of the war years lives on in HCMC, and you can learn more about this violent period at sites such as the War Remnants Museum . The ghosts of French Indochina linger too – set aside some time to wander past the city's colonial-era landmarks, then settle into a coffee shop with a drip-brewed ca phi .

Planning tip: For a break from the city crush, swing out to nearby Tay Ninh, where the Cao Dai Holy See offers a fascinating introduction to the all-embracing Cao Dai religion.

A handful of yellow and red tents can be seen erected on a sand bar near the entrance to a cave

5. Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park

Best for unique experiences

Vietnam's biggest natural attraction – literally – is Hang Son Doong Cave, the largest cavern in the world by volume and a true wonder. An entire New York City block could fit inside its vast main passage, but this monster cavern is only accessible on expensive guided treks.

The good news is that  Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park  is pockmarked with caverns that you can clamber, crawl, boat or zipline through for a fraction of the cost. Trips to the Tu Lan, Phong Nha and Paradise caves are possible on a shoestring budget; more cash will buy access to Hang En, where trekkers set up tents on an underground beach, illuminated by shafts of natural light.

Best for history

A stay in harmonious Hoi An is a journey into Vietnam's lavish, layered past. This was once one of the most important ports in Asia, and traders from as far afield as Japan, Spain and North America filled the pockets of its merchants with gold. Locals used their money wisely, packing the Old Town with teetering shophouses, tea warehouses, fanciful covered bridges, elaborate Chinese guildhalls, and colorful Confucian and Buddhist pagodas. History is only the beginning – many travelers stay for days, learning to make white rose dumplings and summer rolls on chef-led cooking courses, and ordering made-to-measure suits and gowns from the city's modestly priced tailors' shops.

Planning tip: For a change of pace, head inland from Hoi An and spend a night in a friendly community homestay in the Co Tu minority village of Bho Hoong.

An aerial view of the beach of Nha Trang. The beach runs right alongside the city, with a number of skyscrapers and modern buildings visible just behind the golden sands.

7. The Central Beaches

Best for sun-seekers

Sandy bays stud Vietnam's central coastline, but the mood varies widely from beach to beach. Package tourists flock to high-rise Danang  and Nha Trang – famed as military R&R stops during the American War – but we rate the calmer beaches along the coast, where a little of Vietnam's old seaside charm still endures. To the south of Nha Trang, Mui Ne is a lively kitesurfing hub following a string of sandy coves, while Doc Let Beach to the north serves up 18km (11 miles) of sand, surf and seafood. For a quieter experience, hit the coast between Hue and Danang – Thuan An is the gateway to a string of serene and sandy beaches flanking a lagoon-backed barrier island.

Best for imperial history

The former capital of the Nguyen dynasty – which ruled over large parts of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia in the 19th and 20th centuries – drips with imperial history, despite the ravages of US bombers during the American War. Much was lost in Hue , but the grandeur of dynastic Vietnam lives on in the Citadel and Imperial Enclosure , housing the emperor's residence, temples, palaces and court. At one time, entering without permission would bring instant death. Just outside town are the tombs of Vietnam's greatest emperors, resting serenely in green compounds beside the Perfume River. Another relic of royal rule is Hue's imperial cuisine – arguably the finest in the country – try a spicy bowl of bun bo Hue (vermicelli noodle soup) or a crispy banh khoai pancake, and you'll see what we mean.

Planning tip: To stay one step ahead of the crowds at Hue's imperial tombs and rent a motorcycle or scooter to explore; don't miss the Thien Mu Pagoda on your way out of the city.

An empty boat floats along in Ba Be National Park. Beyond the boat the shimmering still waters of the lake is visible, which is backed by numerous mountains, most of which are covered in forest.

9. Ba Be National Park

Best for lake and forest scenery

Vietnam has more than 30 national parks , taking in everything from coastal swamps to mountain jungles, but some are firmly on the tourist trail, and the crowds can be an impediment to spotting wildlife. That's less of a problem in lovely Ba Be National Park , where trails weave between the limestone peaks to Hmong, Tay and Dzao villages, and boat and kayak trips cross serene lakes hemmed in by forested ridges, creating scenes worthy of a medieval woodcut. The park is a haven for everything from macaques and langur monkeys to rare black bears, scaly pangolins and the spectacular crested serpent eagle.

Planning tip: Comfy accommodation in village homes completes the sense of stepping off the mainstream tourist circuit. For an intimate homestay experience, check out the family-run guesthouses in Pac Ngoi village, accessible by bus from Hanoi, via the village of Cho Don.

10. Ha Giang

Best for mountain views

Trekking to the minority villages in the hills around Sapa  is one of Vietnam's top draws, but the country's trekking capital feels rather commercialized these days. Hikers have to walk further every year to find the rural idyll that first drew people to the northwest.

For scenic countryside without the company, remote Ha Giang  province is Vietnam's new frontier. Staying in simple village homestays, you can hike out to minority villages and rice terraces tucked between the soaring limestone peaks, and motor (or pedal) over some of Vietnam's most spectacular passes. You'll want to take plenty of photos on the winding mountain road between Ha Giang town, Dong Van and Meo Vac.

Planning tip: If you're confident in the saddle, motorcycles can easily be rented in Ha Giang town – just ride slowly and be ready for rainy conditions!

Tan Son Nhat Airport Guide

places to visit near vietnam airport

Tan Son Nhat International Airport

The main airport serving Ho Chi Minh City —officially called Tan Son Nhat International Airport—is one of Vietnam’s busiest air gateways, and possibly one of the most congested. Its two terminals were built for a capacity of 25 million passengers, but served some 36 million people in 2017 .

Its inner-city location is both a boon and bane for travelers. On one hand, Tan Son Nhat Airport arrivals can get to their District 1 hotel (just 4 miles away!) in less than 15 minutes; on the other, the encroaching buildings deny the airport any chance of significant expansion. (The under-construction Long Thanh International Airport will replace Tan Son Nhat when it opens, but that will happen in 2025.)

Read on to find out more about this major Vietnam and Southeast Asia air hub – how to get there, how to get around from there, and what to expect when checking in for your next flight out.

Tan Son Nhat International Airport Code, Location, and Flight Information

  • Airport Code: SGN
  • Location: Truong Son, Ward 2, Tan Binh District, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
  • Website: vietnamairport.vn/tansonnhatairport
  • Flight Tracker: https://www.flightradar24.com/data/airports/sgn
  • Phone Number: +84 28 3848 5383

Know Before You Go

Tan Son Nhat International Airport has two separate terminal buildings: Terminal 1 for domestic flights, and Terminal 2 for international ones. Terminal 1 used to handle all domestic and international flights until Terminal 2 opened in September 2007.

The airport complex has already significantly exceeded its capacity, receiving 40 million passengers in 2019 versus its inherent capacity of 25 million per annum. Travelers experience peak times at 4-8 a.m. (the usual arrival times for most international airlines) and from 4:30-7 p.m. The airport regularly exceeds its designed capacity of 35 flights every hour, particularly during peak travel seasons like the Tet New Year .

For arriving passengers, directions to the immigration counter are clearly spelled out by airport signage. There is only one counter for Vietnam visa on arrival , and it tends to have long waits (typical of the rest of the airport). Try to secure your visa well ahead of your trip to avoid a long wait.

The distance between international and domestic terminals is negligible. You’ll only need five minutes to walk from one terminal to the other—but in case you’re catching a domestic flight upon arrival, make sure to have at least two hours layover time to account for schedule changes.

Public Transportation and Taxis

Tan Son Nhat International Airport’s location within the city (as opposed to its outskirts) makes any trip from arrival-side to your hotel a short one—whether you go by taxi, bus, shuttle, or rented car.

Four bus lines serve Tan Son Nhat Airport arrivals. Buses 152 and 109 terminate at District 1 (Ben Thanh Market and 23rd of September Park respectively) and buses 119 and 159 terminate at major city bus terminals (Mien Tay Bus Terminal and Mien Dong Bus Terminal respectively).

  • 152: A green (government-owned) bus with worn interiors and the cheapest fares from the airport. Tickets cost 5,000 dong (about a quarter), but you pay another quarter’s worth extra for your luggage. Operating hours are between 5:45 a.m. and 6:15 p.m., with buses arriving every 12-20 minutes.
  • 109: This yellow (privately-owned) bus goes from the airport to 23rd of September Park. This bus is better-maintained, complete with CCTV and tourist-friendly signage. Fare costs 12,000 dong (about 50 cents USD) for distances under 5 kilometers, 20,000 dong (about 85 cents USD) over 5 kilometers. Extra luggage won’t be charged extra. Operating hours are between 5:30 a.m. and 1 a.m., with buses arriving every 20-30 minutes.
  • 119: This yellow bus connects the airport to Mien Tay Bus Terminal (Western Bus Station), the city terminal that services buses heading to points west and south (including the Mekong Delta). Fare costs 12,000 dong for distances under 5 kilometers, 20,000 dong for over 5 kilometers. Operating hours are between 4 a.m. and 9 p.m., with buses arriving every 15-30 minutes.
  • 159: This yellow bus connects the airport to Mien Dong Bus Terminal (Eastern Bus Station), the city terminal that services buses heading to points east and north (like the Central Highlands). Fare costs 7,000 dong for distances under 1.5 kilometers, 10,000 dong over 1.5 kilometers. Operating hours between 5:30 a.m. and 8:25 p.m., with buses arriving every 25-30 minutes.

BusMap, a semi-official phone app, can be downloaded for free to help you with bus travel to, from and within Ho Chi Minh City.

Upon exiting the terminal building, turn left to reach the taxi queues and prepay counters. Assuming an honest driver with an untampered meter, taxi fares should cost 50,000 dong for District 1 and 80,000 dong (and up) for Districts 2-3. Prioritize riding reputable taxi brands like Mai Linh and Vinasun; other taxi brands have a reputation for dishonesty that’s frankly off-putting.

Coupon taxis within the terminal building are a little more expensive, but at least don’t feel like a ripoff. The SASCO counter , for instance, offers a flat rate depending on the distance; you’ll pay upfront and be escorted to your waiting car.

Car Rentals

As you exit the arrival hall, turn right to find the car rental counter.

Where to Eat and Drink

Tan Son Nhat Airport has a small but satisfying range of food and beverage outlets, with an understandable bias for local foods like pho, banh mi, and coffee. Passengers with a taste for Western fast food can chow down at franchise outlets by Burger King, Popeye’s, and Domino’s Pizza.

There are more food options at Terminal 2 than at Terminal 1, though you can dine at 37th Street Restaurant at the latter before checking in.

Eateries close for a few hours late in the night, so overnight travelers should factor this in when they get ready to fly out.

Right across the airport, a sizeable shopping center—the six-story Menas Mall (formerly Parkson CT Plaza) on Truong Son Street—has a moderately-sized food court at lower prices than what you’ll find airside. The mall is open from 9:30 a.m.-10 p.m.

The shopping scene at Tan Son Nhat International Airport can be a little underwhelming compared to what you’d usually find in places like Singapore's Changi Airport , but it’s adequate for the somewhat discerning tourist.

SASCO Duty-Free stores hold a monopoly on duty-free and souvenir stores in Tan Son Nhat Airport. Aside from locally-made handicrafts and food items, they also sell the usual range of airport goodies—chocolates, cosmetics, perfume, clothing, and fashion accessories.

If you’re newly-arrived, or if you haven’t gone airside yet, the Menas Mall across the street from the airport offers the full shopping-center experience, at lower prices relative to the duty-free stuff.

A VAT Refund counter at Airside, Terminal 2 allows you to claim refunds on the value-added tax you spent on your souvenir shopping.

Airport Lounges

You can get a good rest at the airport, courtesy of a couple of lounges and a dedicated sleep zone.

SASCO operates “Le Saigonnais” lounges in both Terminals 1 and 2 in Tan Son Nhat Airport. Both lounges allow unlimited access to showers, newspapers and magazines, and food to paying guests. You can prebook at the websites liked above.

  • The domestic Le Saigonnais is located on the second floor opposite Gate 12, and charges 425,000 dong for three hours’ use of their facilities, which open from 4:30 a.m. to the last flight of the day.
  • The international-side Le Saigonnais charges around 945,000 dong for four hours’ use of their lounge, which (unlike the domestic one) is open 24/7. You’ll find this lounge on the third floor, near the staircase to Gates 18-20.

A Sleeping Zone can be found airside at Terminal 2, on the second-floor hallway near Gate 27. Twenty-four sleep chairs are available free of charge, and 10 sleep boxes can be yours to use for US$ 7 for one hour, and US$ 4 for an extra 30 minutes.

You can prebook your Sleeping Zone nap online.

Airport Tips and Facts

  • Travel got you down? A massage station at Terminal 1 airside ( Sen Viet Spa , opposite Gate 10) offers professional spa and massage services. A foot spa at the International Terminal can relax those little piggies.
  • Free shower facilities can be found at Terminal 2 airside, opposite Gate 25.
  • Smokers can cut loose at smoking sections in both terminals. At the domestic side, you’ll find it airside opposite Gate 14; over at international, it’s also airside opposite Gates 15 and 18.
  • The airport has free Wi-Fi; look for the “FreeWifi TanSonNhat AirPort” network and connect.
  • A left luggage station allows you to leave your bags behind for a short layover. You’ll find the counter near Columns 13 and 14 at the International Arrivals area; expect to pay about 27,500 dong per piece per hour for a maximum of ten hours; and 275,000 dong per piece per day. The counter is only open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.

We have put the list in order to visit if you were traveling Vietnam by bus or overland. Vietnam flights are really affordable. We choose to fly within Vietnam as several of the Vietnam bus routes were overnight buses.

It would take almost a whole day to get from one Vietnam destination to the next. For example, if you were to go to all the below places in Vietnam it would be 2,590 km. We purchased three one-way flights with luggage on Jetstar for under $100 per person.

Ho Chi Minh City

Traffic in Ho Chi Minh City

A Vietnam trip should start (or end) in Ho Chi Minh City, it’s the perfect place to kick off a Vietnam vacation. Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) is formerly named and still often referred to as Saigon.

Three days in Ho Chi Minh City would give you just the right amount of time to see most of the tourist attractions nearby. Ho Chi Minh City is the largest city in Vietnam with a population of 10 million people and a staggering 4 million motorbikes. If you have ever played the video game Frogger it will come to life when trying to cross the street in Ho Chi Minh.

There are tons of things to do in Ho Chi Minh city but the following tourist attractions are a must: Vietnam, Ben Thanh market, War Remnants Museum, Saigon Central Post Office, and eat lots and lots of Pho.

The best Vietnamese Pho we had was in Ho Chi Minh City, our hotel offered it every day at breakfast. You will likely begin to realize your love for Vietnamese food in Saigon, we now find ourselves craving Pho.

Sapa Vietnam is like no other city in Vietnam. Gorgeous green ride paddies in the Vietnamese mountain town are the highlight of Sapa. Take a tour through the rice paddies and visit the local Hmong & Dao villages.

One of the most unique tours in Sapa actually spends the night in the village. Sapa homestay tours will give you a real look at life in Sapa. There are several options from one night to multiple nights Sapa homestays and even tours from Hanoi to Sapa for only $100 .

A trip to Sapa is a trip in itself. Most tourists in Vietnam travel to Sapa by train, there is a daily overnight train from Hanoi to Sapa that takes about 8 hours.

TIP: Don’t take the cheapest train, pay the few extra dollars for the more expensive tourist class sleeper. Let’s just say we saw a rat on our train when we took the wrong one. Another way to get to Saps is by shuttle bus, we would not recommend this as the roads are very windy and can be dangerous.

Cu Chi Tunnels

Walking through the Narrow Cu chi tunnels in Vietnam

The Cu Chi Tunnels are an easy Vietnam day trip from Ho Chi Minh City. There are tons of Vietnam tour companies selling half-day and full-day trips to the Ci Chi Tunnels.

The tunnels were used during the Vietnam War by the Viet Cong soldiers. These underground tunnels are an extensive network of connecting tunnels where the soldiers lived, used as a supply route, etc.

Our money has never gone further than in Hoi An, there are 4-star hotels for $20 a night in Hoi An. We stayed in an Airbnb apartment so that we had more space since we spent a week. If you are spending a week in any of these Vietnam destinations see what is available on Airbnb.

Some of Hanoi attractions are: Hỏa Lò Prison also known as Hanoi Hilton where John McCain was a prisoner of war, Ho Chi Minh museum was one of the weirdest museums in the world but worth the visit, Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre, and the favorite thing we did was go on a Hanoi street food tour. Street food tours are a great way to learn

Street food tours are a great way to learn your way around Hanoi, try local food you would have never tried before, learn about the Vietnamese dishes, get Hanoi tips from your guide, and the best part was it was only $18.
